The Ultimate Harry Potter Road Trip Across England

To say I’m obsessed with Harry Potter is to say the least… I feel like I have to mention my obsession with every Harry Potter post I write because then you KNOW you’re getting quality Harry Potter content from a fellow fan! This Harry Potter road trip is the ULTIMATE filming location journey for every Harry Potter fan!

The Basics for Your Harry Potter Road Trip

This is a road trip and some of the places are only accessible by car. It’s possible to do some of these filming locations by train if you want to pick and choose a couple of them.

This itinerary is JAM PACKED. I’ve tried to break it up with some “rest” days. Some locations involve hiking, most of the locations require an entrance fee, and some require a parking fee ON TOP of the entrance fee. The best thing about England is how small and drive-able it is, making this a very easy road trip for the number of locations you see in a small number of days.

From arrival to departure the itinerary is 14 days, however, it can be knocked down to 12 days, but the 2 “rest” days are taken out.

ALSO, the travel times are only ESTIMATES! Depending on where your accommodation is located, the amount of traffic, or road works these travel times can vary (same with the exact mileage). Prices do NOT include the price of gas.

If you’re not used to driving on the left side of the road, or you haven’t driven in the UK before, you might want to read about a few basic rules and learn some signs. ALSO, do yourself a favor and request to rent an AUTOMATIC car. You don’t want to get stuck with a manual (those roundabouts can be rough), especially if you’ve never driven one before.

DAY ONE – Where to Start Your Harry Potter Road Trip

To start your epic Harry Potter road trip, you’ll head to England’s most popular city, London, since I assume most of you will be flying into Heathrow or Gatwick. If you fly into Manchester, then this trip can be done starting from and ending in York.

I don’t recommend driving in London, but if you pick up your rental car from the airport, then plan on staying around the outskirts of the city. At least you won’t be driving around Westminster or Covent Garden and you can still have access to the Underground and city center.

Day 1 isn’t jam-packed. It’s the start to your vacation and your dream Harry Potter Road Trip!! If you’re coming from the US, you will more than likely have a red eye flight, mix that with a MAJOR time change and jet lag will soon catch up to you.

My advice for beating jet lag? PUSH THROUGH IT. Drink lots of water and stay hydrated, avoid alcohol on the flight, try to get some sleep and then stay awake all day until your usual bed time.

Don’t plan too much for today. Just pick up the rental, settle into the hotel, have some lunch and just walk around and see the city. Get yourself acclimated.

DAY TWO – London

Now you’re starting your vacay! The Harry Potter locations are spread out throughout the city and you probably won’t get to them all in one day, so I recommend picking a couple that interest you or doing a Harry Potter Walking Tour.

So what London Harry Potter locations should you visit? I think King’s Cross Station needs to be number one on that list. Once you enter the main lobby, follow the signs for platforms 9 and 10, you’ll run into Platform 9 3/4. (You can also look for the MASSIVE line of people waiting to take their picture with the luggage trolley going into the wall).

The Harry Potter store runs the photo op, however, you don’t have to pay (unless you want to buy your professionally photographed picture), just make sure you have someone with you to take a picture, because the staff won’t hold your phone or camera!!

If you want the REAL filming location for platform 9 3/4, it’s actually between platforms 4 and 5!

Leadenhall Market and Borough Market both have doors that have been featured as the entrance for the Leaky Cauldron, you’ll more than likely pass through the Westminster Underground station – used in Order of the Phoenix, Piccadilly Circus is like the Times Square of London and you’ll recognize it from Deathly Hallows: Part 1, or you can walk across the Millennium Bridge – destroyed by the death eaters in Half Blood Prince.

DAY THREE – Lacock

Welcome to your first big driving day on your Harry Potter road trip! You need to leave early! I recommend leaving around 7:30am. The village of Lacock is a very popular day trip for tour companies, so by lunch time it can feel overcrowded.

SAT NAV Postcode: SN15 2LG

Lacock Abbey opens at 10:30am (during peak season) and is about a 10 minute walk from the parking lot. If you get there an hour before the abbey opens then you’ll be able to explore the village first.

You’ll recognize this village as Budleigh Babberton from Half Blood Prince and you can walk down the same streets as Dumbledore and Harry on the way to Slughorn’s hideout… which is also a house in the village used as exterior shots.

Another house you’ll want to check out is the house used as the exterior shots for Harry Potter’s parents house in the first movie.

Head on over to the abbey and go straight to the back and enter the cloisters. This is a major location for Hogwarts!!

*Eeeeeeeeek!!*

The Chapter House was the room that housed the Mirror of Erised, the Warming Room was used in the first movie as the classroom for Professor Quirrel, and the Sacristy was used as the potions class for Snape.

FUN FACT: They used the Sacristy for the first two movies, but built an identical set for Snape’s classroom to be used for the rest of the movies.

Bonus Filming Location: Lacock Abbey was used as Hogwarts in a flashback scene in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Leaving Lacock

Allow yourself 4 hours for Lacock Abbey, walking around the village, having some lunch, and *we can’t forget* taking TONS of photos!!

Once the tour bus crowds start rolling in, it’s time to head out!

Your next stop is Oxford!!

Lacock to Oxford: 1 hour, 13 minutes

Once you arrive in Oxford, you’ll have the chance to stroll the streets and get used to the area before you head out for dinner. You can always check out my One Day Oxford Itinerary for ideas on what to do when you get there!

DAY FOUR – Oxford

Oxford is a beautiful university city (known for the prestigious University of Oxford) with historic roots and intricate architecture.

There’s four major locations here, including a local bar where the cast and crew would hang out.

Christ Church is one of the colleges in the University of Oxford and includes the inspiration for the Great Hall, the very first interior shot we see of Hogwarts (when the students arrive and walk up the staircase with the intricate ceiling to meet Professor McGongall), and the cloisters were used in some hallway scenes. This is the most popular college and can get VERY busy. Make sure you pre-book your timed ticket!

New College is a little less busy than Christ Church, however, always check the website because their open hours are more limited. The cloisters here were used in some hallway scenes and the courtyard has a significant role in Goblet of Fire… Malfoy gets turned into a ferret by Mad-Eye Moody.

The Divinity School is the location of the infirmary and the one-on-one dance McGonagall gives Ron in front of the class before the Yule Ball in Goblet of Fire.

Directly above the Divinity School is Duke Humfrey’s Library. This area was used for all the library scenes and the restricted section scene. You can only get here on a guided tour and photography is not allowed. You will need to leave all your belongings in the locker provided.

The 30 minute Bodleian Library tour includes the Divinity School and Duke Humfrey’s Library.

End your day at the Turf Tavern where the cast and crew would hang out during filming. (Also the infamous pub where Bill Clinton “did not inhale”)

DAY FIVE – Gloucester Cathedral

Oxford to Gloucester: 1 hour, 10 minutes Parking Fee: £4.20 up to 4 hours, £3.20 up to 3 hours Gloucester Cathedral Entrance Fee: Free, but donation appreciated (plan on £5.00)

Gloucester Cathedral is located in the city of Gloucester in county of Gloucestershire… did ya get that?

The parking lot you need to use is the Hare Lane South Car Park. You can stay up to 4 hours in this lot, there’s plenty of spaces and it’s only about a 6 minute walk to the cathedral entrance.

You’ll recognize this intricate ceiling from some iconic scenes from the first two movies.

The first glimpse of Gloucester Cathedral is when Percy is leading the first years to the Gryffindor dorms. They walk down the hallway to the end of the west walk where the fat lady resides.

Percy once again leads the Gryffindors back to the dorms when word gets out about the threat of a troll on the loose, this time through the Gloucester Cathedral courtyard. Harry and Ron then hide from the troll in the Lavatorium before rescuing Hermione from the girl’s bathroom.

In Chamber of Secrets, Moaning Myrtle floods one of the hallways and later on the “Chamber of Secrets has been opened…” message appears on the north side of the cloisters.

The cloisters are HUGE here, so be prepared to spend a little longer than expected. You’ll also want some time to explore the rest of the cathedral, because it’s VERY pretty.

I’d set aside at least 3 hours here to be on the safe side. If you are just walking around and not bothered about recreating scenes and taking a ton of pictures, then you’ll get through it in a hour or two.

Now it’s time to head to York!

Gloucester to York: 3 hours, 5 minutes

DAY SIX – York

Welcome to your base for the next six nights! York is a historic city with roots dating back to 71 AD. It’s been invaded by Romans, Vikings, Normans, Saxons…. pretty much everyone!

You’re not staying here for 6 nights because it’s a plethora of Harry Potter filming locations, but because it’s a great base for your next locations! In fact, York has only one filming location and it’s in the first movie for about 30 seconds.

The York train station bridge was used as the bridge in Kings Cross. Hagrid walks Harry across the bridge as they enter Kings Cross and gives Harry his ticket for the Hogwarts Express on platform 9 3/4 and then disappears before Harry can ask where the platform is.

It is also said that J.K. Rowling’s inspiration for Diagon Alley comes from The Shambles, a tiny medieval street with crooked buildings and local shops that looks like it jumped right off the pages of a Harry Potter book. There’s a ton of Harry Potter stores here and a little cafe that sells potions.

DAY SEVEN – Malham Cove

York to Malham: 1 hour, 28 minutes Parking Fee: up to 3 hours – £2.70, up to 4 hours – £4.80 Malham Cove Entrance Fee: FREE

Malham Cove was once a massive waterfall after the Ice Age, however, today you just see the remnants of what once was. The dramatic limestone pavement overlooks Malhamdale with rolling hills and perfect views.

This beautiful area was used as a filming location in Death Hallows: Part 1. You can see the pavement and views when Harry and Hermione set up camp after Ron deserts them.

You will need to park in the village of Malham. The Malham Chapel Gate car park will give you the easiest access to the cove.

SAT NAV Postcode: BD23 4DG

There’s about a mile walk to the base of Malham Cove and then if you want to get to the top to see the filming location, you’ll have to climb about 400 uneven steps. It’s not as bad as it sounds, but there are no railings and no places to sit on the way up.

Once you’re finished with Malham Cove, you can walk around the hills and down to Gordale Scar (said to be Tolkien’s inspiration for Helm’s Deep in Lord of the Rings) and then visit the impressive waterfall, Janet’s Foss… or head back the way you came and head back to York.

Don’t worry, you have a very relaxing day tomorrow!

DAY EIGHT – North Yorkshire Moors Railway

York to Pickering: 40 minutes Parking Fee: £5.00 ALL DAY Pickering to Goathland Peak Return Ticket: £21.50

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the many heritage lines in the UK running steam trains back and forth through quaint villages and beautiful countryside.

SAT NAV Postcode: YO18 7AJ

The line starts at Pickering, so that’s where you’ll want to get the train (and book your ticket for the Northbound service). You have the option to spend the whole day on the line and explore all the stations. You can even take it all the way to the coast and explore Whitby for an hour. However, if you’re only interested in Harry Potter, then you’ll want to hop off at Goathland Station.

This is the location for Hogsmeade station in the first two movies! When you pull up and the bridge comes into view, you feel like you’re actually pulling up to Hogsmeade!!! (Too bad there’s no Hogwarts in the distance, yes, that was CGI too).

*cue girly scream*

The train only runs during regular season (April-October) and during the holiday season and they do have Harry Potter events occasionally pop up, so always keep updated with their website!

The timetable and price is not the same and fluctuates within the season. The price listed above is the most expensive ticket during peak season from Pickering to Goathland.

DAY NINE – Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral

York to Alnwick: 2 hours, 10 minutes Alnwick Castle Entrance Fee: £19.50  Alnwick Parking Fee: £3.00 all day Alnwick to Durham: 1 hour

Durham Cathedral Entrance Fee: Free, but HEAVILY suggested donation (plan on £5.00) Durham Parking Fee: £3.30 – 2-4 hours Durham to York: 1 hour, 23 minutes

Alnwick Castle

This is where I’m going to confuse you (hopefully not!). This will be a VERY busy day, but it’s the ULTIMATE Hogwarts day trip!!

You will need to start your day early so you can arrive before the opening time. You’re going to drive 2 hours and 10 minutes north to Alnwick Castle.

SAT NAV Postcode: NE66 1YU

The most iconic scene filmed here is the flying lesson which eventually seals Harry’s spot on the Qudditch team! They even do broomstick lessons here! It’s definitely geared towards children, but you can take the iconic “flying on a broomstick” picture when the lesson is over! You’ll need to get there early and pick up a free timed ticket for the lesson.

Areas around the castle were also used as “after class” and “walking to class” scenes (remember when Hermione overhears Ron making fun of her after the wingardium leviosa lesson and then storms off? That was here!), and the main entrance of the castle was actually the exit towards Hagrid’s Hut.

The Alnwick Gardens are also here (separate from the castle), however, the fountain and surrounding area is spectacular and definitely worth a look (especially in the Spring) before you head out.

After you’re finished at Alnwick Castle it’s time to head back down south to the small city of Durham.

Durham Cathedral

This is another iconic location for Hogwarts! (See, I told you this was the ultimate Hogwarts day!)

The city center is on the “peninsula” (formed by the river) and the parking garage is right before you enter this area. It’s a short walk up a small incline to get the the cathedral.

The cloisters and courtyard were used in multiple scenes. The famous one? In Sorcerer’s Stone, when Harry is walking with Hedwig in the snowy courtyard and releases her into the sky. And in Chamber of Secrets, Ron tries to curse Malfoy, “EAT SLUGS!”, only for his spell to backfire on him.

The Chapter House (located just off the cloister) was used as Professor McGongall’s classroom. There’s quite a few scenes filmed here and around the entrance to the Chapter House. Like in Sorcerer’s Stone when Harry and Ron are running down the hallway and into the classroom because they are late, only to find McGonagall disguised as a cat, waiting for them.

Don’t forget to check out the rest of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a beautiful cathedral.

When you’re finished, it’s time to head back to York.

DAY TEN – York

This is your chill day! You’ve been non-stop the past few days, so why don’t you relax by strolling the streets of York or if you want to get some more flights in, climb to the top of the York Minster for some beautiful views of the city.

If you want to check out another place in the area, you could take a day trip from York or check out one of the hidden gems around York .

DAY ELEVEN – Hardwick Hall

York to Hardwick Hall: 1 hour, 15 minutes

Parking Fee: £5.00 all day, National Trust members – FREE Hardwick Hall Entrance Fee: £16.00, National Trust members – FREE

Time to head back to London today! But on your way there, there’s another filming location!

SAT NAV Postcode: S44 5RW

Hardwick Hall was used for all the exterior shots of Malfoy Manor. Of course, there was a little CGI magic involved by adding spires and removing the initials of Bess of Hardwick.

It wasn’t used for interior shots, but it’s definitely worth looking around since you’re here! It’s a National Trust site and one of my faves. This house is the perfect example of Elizabethan architecture and if you’re a Tudor fan too, then you’ll love it here!

Hardwick to London: 2 hours, 45 minutes

DAY TWELVE – London

Now you’re back in London, this is the chance to see some things that you missed or revisit your faves.

Taking a stroll along the River Thames from the London Eye to the Tower Bridge will take you about 40 minutes and it’s a great way to see the river banks… you’ll even pass by the Tate Modern (free rooftop view!) and the Shakespeare Globe.

Take a walk through Hyde Park, visit the world’s first Hard Rock Cafe or watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace!

The Tower of London is a huge tourist attraction, it is steeped in history and a MUST DO for anyone visiting London for the first time! If you want great views of the city you can check out the London Eye, The Shard, or my favorite, Sky Garden -it’s FREE-!!

There’s plenty to do, so enjoy it!

You can always take an easy day trip from London if you have nothing left to see!

DAY THIRTEEN – Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter

London to Warner Bros. Studio Tour: 1 hour, 12 min (by car from city center) Entrance Fee: £49.95 Full Experience Tour (audio guide, souvenir guide): £59.90 Parking: Free Priority Parking: £10.00

Depending on where you are staying in London, it might be easier for you to take the train from London Euston to Watford Junction, just make sure you pick one of the services that will get you there in 15- 20 minutes as opposed to ones that have tons of stops in between and take an hour!

Once you get to the station, there’s an official studio shuttle that will take you there! It’s £3.00 for a roundtrip and it takes about 15 minutes! You don’t have to pre-book the shuttle tickets, just purchase it when you get on the bus! You will also have to show your ticket confirmation!

If you drive, parking is free. You can purchase priority parking for £10.00 when you book your ticket, but it’s not worth it, unless you want to be right next to the studio… walking a little bit extra isn’t going to hurt you.

Make sure you purchase your studio ticket ahead of time and pick the earliest time possible! The timed entry is very regulated, but people spend HOURS here (I average 6 hours) and by afternoon it can get very overcrowded!

The studio tour is the most perfect way to end your Harry Potter road trip!

There’s hundreds of props, costumes, sets, and creatures from all the movies. I almost cried when I walked into the Great Hall… no joke.

If you purchase the audio tour then you’ll get more behind the scenes tidbits from Daniel Radcliffe and the producers, it will definitely enhance your experience and if it’s your first time here, then I highly recommend it! Purchase the complete studio package and you’ll get a souvenir guide to take home with you!!

This is the ULTIMATE Harry Potter fan location! Some of my favorite highlights were hopping on the back of the Knight Bus, seeing everyone’s wands, all the behind the scenes tidbits – like the multiple cloaks used as Harry’s invisible cloak, and seeing ALL of the props – every newspaper, horcrux, chocolate frog, book, potion bottle, and golden snitch that helped the book come to life!

DAY FOURTEEN – Departure Day

This is the day to just take it easy. Grab some breakfast, finish packing, and give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport!

• You’ll need to book 13 nights of rooms.

-2 nights in London -2 nights in Oxford -6 nights in York -3 nights in London

• Stay at hotels that offer free parking to save some extra cash.
• Purchase your Warner Bros. Studio ticket as soon as you know your dates! It sells out quickly!
• ALWAYS check the cathedral’s website. Sometimes they are closed to the public or photos will not be allowed due to services.
• Some places close for the winter season (North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Alnwick Castle…) so if you plan your Harry Potter road trip between April and October, you should be fine!
• The busiest month is July because that’s when school’s in the UK are on their summer holiday.
• Purchase your tickets online to save money at some of the places.
• When visiting locations in York and Oxford – WALK! Parking is very scarce and both cities are very walkable.

Each of the three Universal theme parks has an immersive Harry Potter-themed area, complete with a replica Hogwarts castle butterbeer vendors, and mini Hogsmeade you can stroll around. Universal Orlando Resort has the largest and most elaborate setup, which includes several rides. Most visitors prefer to experience the Wizarding World the same way Harry did after he gets his letter from Hogwarts: Start in Diagon Alley, take a run through Gringotts’s Bank and grab Harry’s favorite strawberry and peanut butter ice cream at Florean Fortescue’s ice cream parlor.  Head to Olivander’s Wand Shop and let a wand choose you. Far from a stuffy museum show, the highly interactive Harry Potter Exhibition has been journeying around the world, and this year will be in New York City and Paris. To make sure visitors leave the Muggle world behind, everyone enters through King’s Cross Station. They are then sorted into houses and assigned a wand so that they can become truly immersed in the Wizarding World. The exhibit has 10 distinct areas, including Hogwarts Castle, the Forbidden Forest, and Hagrid’s Hut. It’s the first of its kind, going beyond the originals to include Fantastic Beasts and the Cursed Child. The Potter Trail

Edinburgh, Scotland

Have you always wanted to see where the real-life Voldemort is buried? Go window shopping in the actual Diagon Alley? See the coffee shop where JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ? If so, head to Edinburgh, Scotland, whose sites and history inspired the author. The Harry Potter Store has all the wizarding swag you expect, plus some exclusives you won’t find anywhere else. However, a magical shopping experience isn’t the only reason to head to this store. The Atrium of Awe spans all three floors of the shop and is guarded by a majestic Griffin cast from the one that guards Dumbledore’s office in the films. At the onsite wand shop inspired by Ollivanders, Wizards can select the perfect wand or choose a replica from the films. Elsewhere in the massive store, visitors can find the same treats sold at Honeydukes, step into a Magic of Ministry phone booth, pose with Hagrid, grab a Butter Beer and more. The Making of Harry Potter

London, U.K. and Tokyo, Japan

Head to London to see how Rowling’s series was brought to life on the big screen. On the Warner Bros. Studio Tour , you can see the sets for Dumbledore’s office, the Great Hall, and Professor Sprout’s greenhouse, head to Platform 9 ¾ and withdraw magical money from Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Costumes, props and animatronics used in the films are also on display, including the fearsome Basilisk.  Keep an eye on the studio’s schedule for special events, including the chance to dine in Hogwarts’ Great Hall around Valentine’s Day and the opportunity to defend against the Dark Arts around Halloween. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

This special-effects-filled theatrical production isn’t just a gimmick–it’s received rave reviews from The New York Times , the London Evening Standard, and other major publications. Based on a story by J.K. Rowling, the play takes place 19 years after the final showdown against Voldemort. Harry now works for the Ministry of Magic, and his son and Draco Malfoy’s son somehow befriend each other. There are flaming wands, duels that send wizards cartwheeling through the air, and other spectacles that will leave adults as breathless as their kids. If spending a few hours exploring Harry Potter’s world is not enough for you, check out  the College of Wizardry , an immersive, multi-day experience that takes place in a 12 th century castle in Poland. Wizards and witches spend a long weekend sleeping, eating and performing spells together. 14 Harry Potter places that no Potter fan should miss

1.  Warner Bros Studio Tour, London

Just north of Watford, you’ll find the very warehouses and movie studios that were used in the making of the massively successful film franchise. Given the sheer volume of Potter nerds, Warner Bros Studios decided to leave everything where it was, expand the studios and let Muggles take a look at the props, sets, costumes, workshops and storerooms that were used for the series, as well as a few all-new additions. Fans will be in heaven here: where else can you step into Hogwarts’ Great Hall and feel as skittish as a first-year student about to face the Sorting Hat?

2.  Livraria Lello, Porto

JK Rowling spent a good chunk of time teaching English in Porto in the ’90s. This 100-year-old bookstore in Portugal ’s second city is a true art nouveau pearl: its central red staircase is said to have inspired the moving staircases in Hogwarts, and its magnificent stained-glass ceiling has been newly restored. It costs €4 to enter Livraria Lello , though you can then deduct this from any book purchase.

3.  The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, Orlando

Universal Studios’ Wizarding World in Florida isn’t just a nice nod to Harry – it’s a physical and tangible extension of the magical universe. This place is two huge theme parks in one: Diagon Alley on one side and Hogsmeade on the other, with a full-scale Hogwarts Express to shuttle you between the two. You can explore Ollivander’s, Honeydukes, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes and the Three Broomsticks and come face-to-face with dragons and Dementors on five rides. Can’t make it to Orlando ? You’ll find smaller versions at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Japan.

4.  The Cauldron Magical Pub and Experience, New York

Let’s be Sirius: there’s not a Harry Potter fan out there who hasn’t dreamt of stepping inside the Leaky Cauldron pub. Probably the closest that you’ll get is at The Cauldron , a fantasy-themed bar ‘experience’ in New York (there’s also a version in London ) . First, pick a wand – it’s your bar tab for the night – and use it to pour a beer from the Tree of Life. Then follow up with enchanting cocktails (cue lots of theatrical smoke) and spellbinding, stomach-lining snacks.

5.  Glenfinnan Viaduct, Scotland

Venture towards the Scottish Highlands and you may spy a familiar sight over Loch Shiel: the Glenfinnan Viaduct , known to Potter fans as the route of the Hogwarts Express. There are two ways to view this striking 21-arched viaduct: you can hop on The Jacobite , a steam train that operates along the line in summer (‘Anything from the trolley, dear?’) or park your car in the valley below and see this impressive bridge up close.

6.  Shambles, York

This narrow, winding street in the historical quarter of northern English city  York  might look a little familiar to Potter fans: it’s a dead ringer for Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade. Many buildings on the Shambles date back to the fourteenth century, when it was mostly occupied by butchers’ shops (in fact, ‘shambles’ is an old word for ‘slaughterhouse’). Have a browse past all the wonky, top-heavy timber-framed buildings and imagine spying an owl or a brand-new Nimbus 2000 in a shop front. Oh, and stop in at The Shop That Must Not Be Named if you fancy a Potter-themed souvenir.

7.  Black Park, Buckinghamshire

This country park right next to London’s  Pinewood Studios  has been featured as an outdoor location for the James Bond, Monty Python and Captain America movies – as well as the Potter films, where it made a perfect stand-in for the spooky Forbidden Forest. Black Park is a lovely place for a wander with outstanding biodiversity – though you’re unlikely to come across any centaurs, thestrals or acromantulas, at least before sunset.

8.  Wynott’s Wands, Salem

The folk at Wynott’s Wands (located in Massachusetts ’s most historic witching destination) take their magic seriously: they pride themselves on providing ‘the finest in magical tools for witches and wizards’. Each wand is hand-turned in the basement and some supposedly have magical cores. And if you’re looking to buy, remember: the wand chooses the wizard.

9.  London Zoo

London Zoo 's gardens have been entertaining visitors of all ages since the reign of Queen Victoria. In the first Potter film, the London Zoo Reptile House stood in for the fictional ‘Surrey Zoo’, and it’s here that a ten-year-old Harry accidentally sets a giant python loose. Just be careful practising your Parseltongue here: you never know who might be listening.

10.  Greyfriar’s Kirkyard, Edinburgh

Greyfriar's Kirkyard in  Edinburgh  left such an impression on Rowling that she named characters in her books after gravestones she found there. Take a stroll and you’ll find the graves of Robert Potter, Elizabeth Moodie, Margaret Louisa Scrymgeour Wedderburn, Thomas Riddell and the famous(ly terrible) poet William McGonagall, near the gates that lead to…

11.  George Heriot’s School, Edinburgh

Many see this place as the chief inspiration for Hogwarts. Like the famous wizarding school, the building is grand and features far too many towers and turrets to count. And like many pupils at old-fashioned British schools, students at George Heriot ’s wear a uniform and are sorted into houses – though we’re pretty sure there’s no talking hat involved. You can look inside George Heriot’s School during Scotland ’s annual Doors Open Days in September. The rest of the time,  take a peek from the outside and be sensitive – it’s a working school, after all.

12.  King’s Cross station, London

• King’s Cross

JK Rowling has said she picked  King’s Cross  station as the London terminus for the Hogwarts Express because her parents had met on a train departing from the station, and every aspiring wizard has imagined what it would be like to pass through the barrier between Platforms 9 and 10 at King’s Cross – which is why there’s usually a queue of Potter fans waiting to take a photo (or get a professional shot taken for £9.50 a pop), pushing a trolley that seems to be passing through the brick on to the magical Platform 9¾. Muggles, eh?

13.  St George’s Hall, Liverpool

For ‘ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ’, the production crew recreated New York in the 1920s with some incredible sets at the Warner Bros Studios (plus a sprinkle of CGI magic). One set they didn’t have to build was St George’s Hall : a grand neoclassical building in Liverpool that stands in (decked out in red, white and blue bunting) for the real City Hall in Manhattan , where an American senator’s fundraising dinner turns deadly after a visit from an Obscurus.

14.  TRAPT Bar and Escape Room, Melbourne

You’ll need a lot more than ‘alohomora’ to get out of this Harry Potter-inspired escape room in Melbourne . The goal of the ‘Alchemy’ room is to find the mythical Philosopher’s Stone. Inside, you’ll be able to practise spells and enchantments, and test magical skills to try to solve the mystery before the time runs out. Don’t worry: Trapt has listed the difficulty level of this room at ‘beginner’, so we reckon even Hufflepuffs will be able to beat the clock.

So you’re the ultimate Harry Potter fan but can’t decide where to take your next trip? First of all, true Potter fans should be aware of Wizarding World : the official fansite where you can get sorted by the Sorting Hat (you'll need to login) into your Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry house. Your house is based on a variety of personality quirks and preferences, meaning you’ll fit in with the overall atmosphere of the house you’re sorted into.

Once you know your Harry Potter Hogwarts house, you’re on the road to finding the perfect travel destination. Because let’s be honest, a gutsy Gryffindor may have very different travel goals from a humble Hufflepuff, and likewise a rational Ravenclaw’s travel bucket list might not overlap with a shrewd Slytherin’s vacation goals. Have no fear, Potter fans: read on to find out the perfect travel destination for your Hogwarts house.

Where to travel based on your Harry Potter character  

Gryffindor – Utah or Nicaragua

Being the house of Harry, Ron and Hermione themselves, Gryffindors are known as the brave, adventurous, daring and chivalrous of the Hogwarts lot. You have nerve and are very well-rounded, so only a very adventurous destination will do.

Gryffindors are an active bunch, so we think you’ll love an outdoorsy travel destination like Utah . Hike through the otherworldly red-clay rock formations in Bryce Canyon , practice your rune-reading at an ancient petroglyph site in Moab or produce a patronus in Zion National Park .

For a bit more adventure, Nicaragua  is another great spot for a Gryffindor getaway. Yu can try out some exciting Muggle activities like volcano boarding down the active volcano Cerro Negro, swimming between wild islands or canoeing through jungles, where you might just spot some fantastic beasts.

Ravenclaw – Greece or Ethiopia

Ravenclaw, you are the most intelligent members of the wizarding world. You have a thirst for knowledge, valuing brains and information over guts. To that end, we suggest a cultural travel destination for your house.

Greece would make an ideal vacation for Ravenclaws. You can spend your time learning the (somewhat strange, we know) teachings of Muggle philosophers and perusing their ancient human sites, like the amazing Acropolis  – Professor Binns would be proud.

Ravenclaws are also deeply interested in diverse cultures and ancient history, so consider travelling to the cradle of Muggle civilization: Ethiopia , where some of the oldest human ancestors came from, a crossroads rich in culture and religion.  Visiting cultures such as the Surmi, Mursi and Karo people offers a chance to see how local communities have preserved ancient traditions, while the 1600-year-old rock churches of Tigray  show just how long the religious history is in Ethiopia.

Hufflepuff – Canada or Taiwan

Dedicated and loyal, Hufflepuffs are the all-around nicest witches and wizards. They tend to be trusting, kind and value justice and fairness, and for that we think the best travel destination for a Hufflepuff is somewhere social and friendly with good nightlife.

Canada would be the perfect travel destination for a Hufflepuff. Canadians are known the world over for being some of the friendliest Muggles, and they value equality and diversity. Travelling Hufflepuffs can enjoy the relaxed, peaceful pace of Vancouver;  practice their bubblehead charms in the waters of Lake Ontario; or head to Newfoundland to pay homage to beloved Hufflepuff Cedric Diggory’s most famous spell, turning a rock into a labrador .

Canada's best wildlife experiences  

Taiwan  is another destination Hufflepuffs will love for its egalitarian and friendly attitude. And as the first country on the Muggle continent of Asia to legalise LGBT marriage, it is Dumbledore-approved.  Night markets, such as  Miaokou  in northern Taiwan, are brimming with food and friendly locals, and a great place for Hufflepuffs to experience Taiwan’s welcoming attitude firsthand.

Slytherin – Tokyo or Fiji

OK, so Slytherins sometimes get a bad rap around the world due to one or two evil wizards who came through your house, but let’s not forget Harry Potter himself was one request away from Slytherin. You are a house of ambitious, determined and highly inventive witches and wizards. And you love what’s cool, unique and exclusive.

We think a great travel destination for Slytherins is somewhere that values tradition as well as exclusivity, and where better for that than edgy Tokyo ? Centuries-old shrines stand alongside sleek skyscrapers, and you can practise potions while sipping a cocktail with an amazing city view somewhere like Asahi Sky Room .

How to spend a perfect weekend in Tokyo  

Slytherins are also highly driven leaders who sometimes need a true escape from the wizarding world. In that case, Slytherins should visit a resort island like Fiji  or the Seychelles , where they can just rest their wands for a while.

No matter which house you are sorted into, there are a few Harry Potter travel destinations that will appeal to everyone.

You can’t go wrong with a trip to Great Britain , Harry’s homeland. There are numerous Harry Potter sights in Britain , but don’t miss a trip to the Warner Bros Studio Tour: The Making of Harry Potter , an absolute must for any Potterhead. This magical studio tour leads you through all of the sets used in the making of the Harry Potter films as well as an animatronic workshop where you can interact with multitudes of fantastic beasts, from a grindylow to Buckbeak himself.

While you’re in England, don’t forget to swing through King’s Cross train station to visit Platform 9¾, where you can have your picture taken pushing your luggage cart through the brick wall and onto the Hogwarts Express platform.

“All aboard The Hogwarts Express!” This iconic train is an actual full-functioning train, known as the Jacobite Steam Train and it looks just as good as it does in the movies as it stretches beyond a wide field of rolling, bright green hills.

You’re going to hop aboard and take this train to your next destinations…

Glencoe, Scotland

The magical landscapes were used for many scene backdrops. You might notice Steall Falls at Glen Nevis from the Tri-Wizard Tournament in the Goblet of Fire (2005) and where Quidditch matches were also filmed.

The Elephant House – Edinburgh, Scotland

Here lies the “birthplace of Harry Potter”. This is the now-famous location where J.K. Rolling wrote the first and second Harry Potter books. J.K. Rolling found it cheaper to pay for a cup of coffee and write all day at The Elephant House, rather than pay a heating bill at home. She notoriously sat on the third floor, staring out the window to the back where she saw…

Greyfriars Kirkyard – Edinburgh, Scotland

The official resting place of Thomas Riddle, but not the Tom Riddle you’re thinking. This cemetery offers tons of clues to where some of J.K. Rolling’s inspiration for the Harry Potter book series came from. Like the names engraved in the stone, Thomas Riddle and James, and you can’t miss the snack etched on the grave either.

Alnwick Castle – United Kingdom

Grab your broomsticks and head off to Alnwick Castle where many outdoor scenes from the first two Harry Potter movies were shot. Most notably, where Harry and his classmates took their first flying lessons with Madame Hooch.

Durham Cathedral – Durham, England

As if the picture of cloisters above doesn’t already show you – Durham Cathedral was the filming location for many Harry Potter films. The cathedral chapter house was the site for Professor McGonagall’s class when she taught students how to turn animals into water goblets. Also, the same place where Ron slug-vomited in the  Chamber of Secrets (2002).

Goathland Station – United Kingdom

Goathland Station is home to the Hogwarts Express stop at Hogsmeade Station. You’ll notice the striking resemblance when the train passes you by here.  Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone  (2001) was filmed at this location when the Hogwarts Express reaches Hogsmeade.

King’s Cross Station – London

Also known as Platform 9 3/4. This is the holy grail for Harry Potter fans because you can actually touch it and it does exist in our muggle world! Unfortunately, your magic won’t be strong enough to actually make it to the other side of the brick wall to the Hogwarts Express. However, taking a good picture could fool anyone 😉

Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Claremont Square N1 – London

Claremont Square, N1 is best known as the muggle’s view of No. 12 Grimmauld Place. It was the home of the Black Family, and then notoriously becomes the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, appearing in  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix  (2007).

High Commission of Australia – London

No goblins here – the Australia House is used as Gringott’s. Unfortunately, you will need a good reason to go inside, like getting your Visa. However, the inside of the Australia House was used for all scenes inside Gringott’s with it’s chandeliers and marble columns. The exterior was created special for the films and not the way muggles see it in London today.

Millennium Bridge, London

Do not fear – you shall find zero  death eaters on your journey across the Millennium Bridge . This bridge is featured in  Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince (2009) as muggles run for their lives to escape the collapsing bridge caused by “plumes of smoke” (aka death eaters).

Cecil Ct., London

It has been said that this is the  real  Diagon Alley and that J.K. Rolling’s for the magical shopping place was inspired by Cecil Ct. It certainly does look like as you walk through the long row of shops! The only downside to your shopping adventure is that you won’t be able to treat yourself to a new robe for school at Madam Malkin’s store.

Reptile House at the London Zoo, London

The ever-so-infamous spot where Harry Potter first spoke parseltongue. Both in the book and in the movie, this is the setting where the snake was released by Harry and set free. You will find the scene in  Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001).

Harrow School, United Kingdom

Harrow School is an all boy’s independent school. In it you will find its oldest classroom, built in 1615 – and also home to Professor Flitwick’s charms class. In  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), this class is presented during his teaching of Wingardium Leviosa.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour, London

You can’t find more Harry Potter excitement than this! Go on the studio tour and walk through the Great Hall and Diagon Alley, where the  Harry Potter  movies were filmed, and check out the amazing special effects that make magic come to life!

Christ Church, Oxford

Follow the footsteps of Harry Potter and the cast through many filming locations at Oxford’s college. One of the most popular destinations is on the staircase which leads up to the Great Hall – it was used for the arrival scene for new Hogwarts students in the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) and Chamber of Secrets (2002).

Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester

The magical cloisters found at historic Gloucester Cathedral was transformed into the corridors of Hogwarts Witchcraft and Wizardry. Many other popular scenes from the first two Harry Potter films can be recognized here like, the wall where we were enlightened that the Chamber of Secrets had been opened while written in blood, the door that led into the girl’s bathroom where Moaning Myrtle infamously would hang out, and the door to the Gryffindor dormitories.

Lacock Abbey and Village, Wiltshire, England

The cloisters in Lacock Abbey is where Harry comes our of Professor Lockhart’s room after serving detention in  Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002).

Walking through this village, you will feel as if you stepped into the magical world too. The cottage backdrop can be found in  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince  (2009).

Though you won't find Eeylops Owl Emporium, Flourish and Blotts, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes or Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions in London 's streets, that doesn't mean you can't indulge in the world of "Harry Potter." Knowledgeable witches and wizards lead themed tours that discuss not only filming locations for the beloved Potter films, but also the wizarding world's most famous individuals like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

Consulting Muggle traveler opinion as well as expert input from the top witches and wizards, U.S. News & World Report found the best Harry Potter London tours on offer.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter

For Potterheads, no trip to London is complete without a stop to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter , which explores how the "Harry Potter" films were made. During the self-guided visit, travelers will wander the Diagon Alley set, board the Hogwarts Express, view props and costumes and much, much more. Visit around Halloween for the Dark Arts or the winter holidays for Hogwarts in the Snow; the tour is decked out in seasonal décor for both events.

"As both a filmmaker and 'Harry Potter' fan, I was absolutely blown away by this tour," says Leilani Osmundson , digital producer at U.S. News Travel. "The sets, props and costumes were incredible and very well-maintained, and there were written explanations for almost everything." Osmundson suggests staying at the back of the group when entering the Great Hall for a chance to snag photos with fewer people in the shot when the group moves on. Keep in mind, this great experience comes with equivalent fees: Travelers warn of high ticket prices and expensive souvenirs. To avoid crowds, get to the studio early.

Tickets start at 51.50 pounds (about $64) per person. Children 3 and younger as well as caregivers can explore for free. Ticket packages that include a stay at a hotel or afternoon tea cost extra. Hours vary depending on the day. The tour is self-paced and you can explore as long as you wish, but you'll want at least 3.5 hours (more if you're a die-hard fan who wants to take in every detail). The tour is located in Leavesden, Watford, which is about 20 miles northeast of central London. Take the train to Watford Junction then board the complimentary shuttle to the studio.

Evan Evans Tours – Harry Potter Film Locations Walking Tour

Price: Adults from 29 pounds (about $36); kids from 24 pounds (around $30) Duration: 3 hours

Along this three-hour walking tour, you'll see the telephone booth that takes you to the Ministry of Magic, the Millennium Bridge and King's Cross Station, among other top filming locations. Tour-takers say the guides share fun Potter facts along with information about London.

Tours depart at both 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Tickets cost 29 pounds (approximately $36) for adults and 24 pounds (about $30) for kids 3 to 16. You will also need a valid travel card for the Underground, as part of the tour is on the tube. The outing is not accessible. A few note that if you're traveling solo, this is a great tour to take. The two-hour tour takes travelers throughout London – including across the Thames – and tells stories about Harry, Ron and Hermione along the way.

You'll meet your guide near the Monument tube station. The walking tour costs 17 pounds (around $21) for adults and 15 pounds (about $19) for children younger than 12.

See Your City – Original Harry Potter Locations Tour

Price: From $19.04 Duration: 2 hours

During See Your City's two-hour jaunt, you'll not only learn about the filming of "Harry Potter" (including the bridge destroyed in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"), but guides will also quiz you along the way so you can earn points for your house. Travelers praise the guides for their fun and informative delivery, saying that there are several spots on the tour that they wouldn't have seen by themselves.

Tickets cost about $20 per person and run mornings at 10:30 a.m., and afternoons at 2 and 7 p.m. In addition to English, See Your City conducts tours in Italian, German, French, Spanish and British Sign Language. The company runs other "Harry Potter"-themed tours, including one that explores London by boat and one that runs at night.

This daylong tour begins with a visit to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London to see the sets (including the Forbidden Forest, Hagrid's Hut and the Great Hall), costumes and props from the films. After spending four hours at the studio, the coach will whisk you away to nearby Oxford where guides will take you on a walking tour of the university buildings and city streets. Tourgoers call this an excellent way to spend the day and appreciated the stop in Oxford.

Tour tickets start at 174 pounds (about $216) for adults and 169 pounds (approximately $210) for kids ages 5 to 15. Trips depart from central London around 8:30 a.m. and return around 7:45 p.m. In addition to "Harry Potter" outings, International Friends runs "Downton Abbey" tours.

London With a Local – Free Harry Potter Wizarding Tour

Price: Free Duration: 2 hours

Tourgoers routinely encourage "Harry Potter" fans to take this tour, saying the guides and stories shared are both fantastic. The walking tour meets at Palace Theatre, where the play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" performs. (While seeing the play isn't part of the tour, you may want to grab tickets to the show while you're in London.) From there, guides will lead you down Diagon and Knockturn alleys (aka Charing Cross Road) and past buildings that inspired the Gringotts Wizarding Bank and the Ministry of Magic. Be sure to refresh your trivia knowledge, too, as guides quiz travelers for the Hogwarts Trivia House Cup.

Outings last about two hours. Tours depart at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., but daily availability can vary. The tour is free, though tips for the guide are appreciated. London With a Local runs other movie- and book-based free tours, including James Bond and Sherlock Holmes tours.

Brit Movie Tours – Wizards London Bus Tour

Price: Adults from 32.50 pounds (about $40); kids from 21 pounds Duration: 3.5 hours

Hop on an air-conditioned bus to see spots in London that served as a backdrop for the eight "Harry Potter" films. Sites tourgoers will see include the spot used for the Leaky Cauldron, the spot where the Knight Bus squished itself through traffic and more. Along the way, guides will quiz you about the books. Plus you'll see a few spots from the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise. Many travelers say the bus tour is a bargain and praise the guides. A few others note they could have found the stops by themselves.

Tours run year-round on Sundays (usually at 9:30 or 10:30 a.m.) as well as Wednesdays at 2 p.m. in the warmer months. Availability can vary, however. Tickets start at 32.50 for adults (about $40) and 21 pounds (roughly $26) for kids 15 and younger. Brit Movie Tours also runs a walking version of this tour.

London Top Sight Tours – Harry Potter Azkaban Tour (Film Locations & Prison)

Price: From 69 pounds (about $86) Duration: 3 hours

This tour focuses on the famous prison that housed some of the Death Eaters (followers of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named): Azkaban. Tour-takes will visit the Clink Prison Museum, which inspired J.K. Rowling when writing about the wizard prison. Additionally, this walking tour stops at two "Harry Potter"-themed shops as well as other locations from the films. London tourists say the guides do an excellent job.

Tours last three hours and depart from King's Cross. Tickets start at 69 pounds (roughly $86) per person and include the entry ticket to the Clink Prison Museum. Keep in mind you'll also need a topped up travel card for the tube. Tours run at 10 a.m. and 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. daily. The company runs a variety of other London tours, as well as private tours.

City Wonders – Fully Guided Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter

Price: Adults from $310; kids from $297 Duration: 6 hours

As the name implies, City Wonders conducts fully guided excursions to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. Guides meet the tour group – of no more than eight individuals – at the Euston War Memorial before boarding a train to get to the studio. Upon arrival, a trained guide will lead your group through the Studio Tour. You'll view props, costumes and sets like Ollivander's, the Gryffindor common room and more. Along the way, guides will share interesting tidbits about the movies. Travelers say the tours are excellent and the guided portion through The Making of Harry Potter is extra special. They also say that sampling Butterbeer or other magic foods is a must, but warn of long lines for concessions.

The tour starts at $310 for adults, $297 for children 5 to 15 and $12 for infants 4 and younger. It lasts about six hours and departs at 11:05 a.m. and 12:05 p.m. daily. City Wonders runs a variety of tours, including outings to the British Museum and the Tower of London .

Free Tours by Foot – Harry Potter Walking Tour London

Price: Free Duration: 2.5 hours

If you're hoping to save some knuts, sickles and galleons on a London trip, this could be a great tour option. As the name implies, Free Tours by Foot runs pay-what-you-wish walking tours. The "Harry Potter" tour will go by Westminster Tube station (as seen in "The Order of the Phoenix"), Godwin's Court (Knockturn Alley), St. Paul's and Trafalgar Square, among other top sites. Travelers say it is a wonderful tour, as guides share information about both the boy wizard and London history.

Tours run Wednesday and Saturday at 2 p.m. Though tours are free, reservations are required. Additionally, part of the tour takes place on the tube, so make sure you have plenty of money on a travel card.

Harry Potter Tours in Scotland

London isn't the only place in the United Kingdom to get your Potter fix. Scotland – where you'll find the real-life Hogwarts Express and Hogwarts castle – is another must-visit destination for fans. Here are some tours to consider:

Universal Orlando Resort has two Harry Potter areas to visit, Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade in Universal’s Islands of Adventure. It’s also the only location where visitors can ride Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure roller coaster, the longest in Florida. Universal Studios Osaka is the only Wizarding World to have the Great Lake, and Universal Studios in Beijing occasionally gets snow, adding to the experience.

For Abbi’s 12th birthday this year, I knew I wanted to do something epic. She loves birthdays and I am not a great party planner or a fantastic celebrator of holidays. They just take SO much effort and money. I knew that I’d have to budget and plan well for this trip.

Abbi has loved Harry Potter since she was little. During our first trip to Europe, we spent hours driving through Europe listening to all the Harry Potter Books in the car. Then we would watch the movies, and when she got a little older she read the books on her own. Needless to say, we are all kind of huge nerds about Harry Potter.

She has wanted to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter for a long time. So I secretly planned a trip just for her and me! And Harry Potter World turned out to be everything we hoped for and more! Here’s is everything I wish I’d known before going.

Where is Harry Potter World?

There are actually two! One in California and one in Orlando, Florida, not far from Disney World.  We visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Orlando. This is the original Harry Potter land, and also the biggest. Learn more about what to do in Orlando with teens .

I bought my flights through Expedia , one of the world’s leading full-service online travel brands.  Their flight search engine was fast and efficient and I was able to find great flights from Washington DC to Orlando. I waited to book our hotels, knowing that the Expedia Add-On Advantage would be coming to me in a few days!

The Expedia Add-On Advantage is a program that offers hotel savings on select properties that are instantly unlocked up until the start of your trip. They will be sent to your email several days after you purchase a flight or package, or book a rental car.

The hotels they sent for us were killer deals! We booked a room at the Allure resort, less than a mile from Universal Studios, for only $44/night! The hotel stay needs to occur within the travel dates of the flight, car or package purchase, but the Add-On Advantage deals are always amazing.

I love the Add-On Advantage because it takes the pressure off of having to pay for the entire trip at once. I booked my flights, then booked the hotel the following week using the Expedia Add-On Advantage.

Transportation

Honestly, if you plan on just doing the parks in Orlando, I don’t recommend renting a car. A Taxi, UBER or Lyft ride from the airport will cost about $25 as well as the ride back. Most hotels have free shuttles to the parks and if you are staying close to the parks a ride there will cost about $7 each way. By the time you pay for a rental car plus parking, it ends up being more cost effective to not rent a car.

If you do rent a car, be sure the check the Expedia Add-On Advantage for awesome deals on rental cars.

We did rent a car for one day that we weren’t doing the parks to go to Daytona Beach and take a dip in the ocean. The beach is about an hour away by car and the warm water and white sand is totally worth the drive.

Tips for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

As this was my first visit, I want to share all my Wizarding World of Harry Potter tips that I wish I’d known before we went. I don’t recommend just showing up without knowing anything. These tips will save you money and help you make the most of your time.

One World, Two Parks, Massive Headache

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter consists of two separate sections of two separate theme parks. Sound confusing? That’s because it is. Instead of creating ONE “world” contained in ONE theme park, Universal Studios Harry Potter cleverly divided their most popular attractions between TWO theme parks, requiring you to purchase a park hopper ticket to see all of it. Well played Universal, well played!

The two halves of the Wizarding World are divided between Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley in Universal Studios and are connected by the Hogwarts Express, which is not only a shortcut between parks, but a ride in itself.

If you want to ride the Hogwarts Express, you MUST buy a park hopper! I made this mistake and bought tickets to spend one day in each park, but since they weren’t park-hopper tickets, we couldn’t ride the Hogwarts Express. We ended up “downgrading” our tickets to just a one-day park hopper so that we could see both parks in one day and ride the Hogwarts Express. Totally worth it by the way!

If you are coming solely to spend time in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, I suggest buying a one-day park hopper ticket, as both sections of the world can easily be thoroughly explored in one day.

Buying Tickets to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

We like to buy our theme park tickets with Getaway Today. They are a trusted company and have the best deals out there. You can also book your Universal tickets and hotel together in a vacation package, which can save you a lot of money. You can purchase Universal packages here and Universal tickets here.  

• Arrive at Universal Studios Harry Potter World before the park opens
• Start at Hogsmeade, go to Diagon Alley at noon, then go back to Hogsmeade in the evening.
• Buy an interactive wand. There will be fun little stops in both parks where you can do some of your own magic.
• Lockers are available for the Harry Potter and Gringott’s rides. They are free for the duration of the ride.
• Bring a fannypack if you can to avoid having to use the lockers as the space gets extremely crowded! Fawn Design makes my very favorite fannypack!

I’m dividing this guide into two sections: Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley

Hogsmeade (Islands of Adventure)

I recommend starting and ending your day in Hogsmeade. If you have early access because you are staying in a Universal property, this will only allow you early access to Universal Studios. Sure the half-hour extra is great, but what I’ve found is that it’s more crowded by the time the park opens. Sure, it’s great for those first 30 minutes, but so is Islands of Adventure. So ESPECIALLY if you don’t have early access, head to Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure first thing!

The park opens at 9 AM, but they let us in around 8:30. The fastest route to Harry Potter is to go to the right once you enter the park and take a sharp left when you hit Seuss Landing.

Islands of Adventure is home to Hogsmeade where you’ll find the quaint town with snow-covered pitched roofs, Hogwarts Castle and lots and lots of butterbeer!

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey: This ride inside of Hogwarts Castle is an interactive ride that will bring you on a journey through Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and on a forbidden journey as you ride along on your very own broomstick with your favorite characters. The line for this ride can get crazy. I recommend going straight here first thing in the morning. Your wait will only be the time it takes you to walk to the ride entrance.

Flight of the Hippogriff:  Don’t blink, this brief ride lasts approximately 1 minute and 6 seconds. I recommend doing this ride first thing in the morning right after Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Be sure to spot Hagrid’s cottage and Buckbeak’s nest while you’re in line.

The Hogwarts Express: Used as an amazing shortcut between Hogsmeade (Islands of Adventure) and Diagon Alley (Universal Studios), the Hogwarts Express is a ride in itself. Note: you MUST have a park-hopper ticket to ride the Hogwarts Express!  

This quick train ride will take you on a journey from Hogsmeade to King’s Cross Station, London, where you’ll make your way through Platform 9 3/4, into London, and through the brick wall to Diagon Alley. You’ll ride in your very own carriage car with several others. The cars look just like the movie. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s worth a ride!

The best part of Hogsmeade, for me at least, is all the adorable shops! Not necessarily what’s IN the shops, but just the detail that has been put into each shop. In Hogsmeade you will find:

• Honeydukes: This adorable harry potter candy store is full of all the goodies from the Harry Potter books and films including Sugar Quills, Exploding Bon Bons, Fudge Flies, Candy Floss, U-No-Poo, Chocolate Frogs, Pepper Imps, Bertie Bots Every Flavor Bean, Fizzing Whizbees, Peppermint Toads and more.

• Olivander’s: This wand shop, owned by Olivander is where Harry Potter receives his wand (well the wand chose him really). Although the original Olivander’s was in Diagon Alley, there is one located in Hogsmeade as well. At Olivander’s you can participate in your own wand choosing ceremy, where a wand can choose you if you’re lucky enough to be picked. I recommend going right after you ride the two rides first thing in the morning to avoid a long wait. The less people in your group, the better chance you have of being chosen.Abbi was lucky enough to be chosen in the ceremony and we purchased her $55 Interactive Wand which we used all over Hogsemeade and Diagon Alley.

• Zonko’s Joke Shop: Full of fun novelty gifts and other souvenirs.
• Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods: A souvenir shop
• Dervish & Bangs: Souvenir Shop

• Owl Post: Look out for the nesting owls and the Howler! Send your own postcards to be sent by owl to friends and family with an official Hogsmeade postal stamp!

I’ll be honest, after my experience at Disneyland Paris, I was slightly worried about starving to death while at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I am not generally a fan of overpriced theme park food, but the food here was actually incredible and consisted of a legitimately British menu with items like Fish & Chips, Full English Breakfast, Bangers & Mash, Meat pies, Pasties, and Sticky Toffee Pudding. It was such a happy surprise for me and I wish I could have gone back an extra day just to try all the menu items.

• The Three Broomsticks: This is the main restaurant in Hogsmeade and offers a fantastic variety of British food. The cozy snow-capped in is decorated to look like an old tavern and it’s so well done. We came here for breakfast after doing the two rides and Olivander’s. By this time it was around 9:30 AM.

The portions are large. The two of us split the full English Breakfast which consists of eggs, bacon, sausage, blood pudding, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and a croissant. We couldn’t even finish it. We also ordered pumpkin juice which is my new favorite thing.  SO GOOD (I actually liked it better than butterbeer)!

• Hog’s Head: At this bar, you can get classic Butterbeer, Pumpkin Juice, and other grown-up drinks.
• Neeps: These little stands in Hogsmeade will offer bottled drinks and snacks. There was a wide variety of fresh fruit, which I was so grateful for after all that Butterbeer!
• Butterbeer: There are several Butterbeer stalls in Hogsmeade where you can get cold Butterbeer or (my favorite) Frozen Butterbeer, which is like a Butterbeer Slushie. I’m still dreaming about it!

Diagon Alley

Around noon, I recommend heading to Diagon Alley. Take the Hogwarts Express, pass through Platform 9 3/4 and into King’s Cross Station. As you exit the station, you will find yourself in “London,” which is super adorable! Make your way through the brick wall that opens up to Diagon Alley. As adorable and well-done as Hogsmeade is, Diagon Alley is over the top perfection with the detail. You’ll be greeted by tall crooked buildings, and a dragon towering over the palatial Gringott’s Bank!

I recommend going to Diagon Alley during the hotter part of the day as it feels more shaded, and you can escape to “Knockturn Alley” and into near-darkness and cool bliss!

Rides (or ride, really)

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts: This is the only ride we waited in a long line for. At the busiest time of day, the wait was 45 minutes. We went a second time and did the single rider line. It was about 30 minutes. It was well worth the wait though as this was our favorite ride of the day! It incorporates all the interactive parts of the Hogwarts ride, but the movements of this one are faster and more exciting. It’s such a long wait because it’s the only ride in Diagon Alley.

The shops at Diagon Alley are so well done! They are whimsical and spooky and totally magically make you feel like you’ve been transported into another world. Pay attention to all the little details and spend a good few hours wandering the crooked streets.

• Gringott’s Money Exchange: Come here first thing to exchange your Muggle Money for Wizard currency to spend in Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade. The money comes in denominations of $10 or $20 and is an even exchange. You can make the exchange using cash or card. It’s just a fun thing to do, especially if you’re giving the kids spending money.
• Shutterbuttons: At this cute photo studio you can create your own moving pictures just like the ones in Harry Potter.
• Borgin & Burkes: This spooky shop in Knockturn Alley sells objects and oddities for the dark arts. Or really just spooky T-shirts.

• Weasleys’ Wizardly Weazes: This was Abbi’s favorite shop. Full of fun pranks, jokes, and gifts. Watch for Professor Umbridge swinging from the ceiling.
• Quality Quidditch Supplies: Find everything you’ll need to play the most popular sport of the wizarding world, Quidditch!

Madam Malkin’s Robes for all Occasions: Find all the best wizarding wardrobe essentials.

• Magical Menagerie: Come here to adopt your own furry magical friend.

Wands by Gregorovitch: The “other” wand shop and rival to Ollivander. Find interactive wands here as well.

• Sugarplum’s Sweet Shop: This cute little candy store has all the same fun Harry Potter themed candy that Honeyduke’s has.

There are plenty of great food and treats in Diagon Alley, and don’t forget the Butterbeer!

• The Leaky Cauldron: Find more traditional British fare here, such as fish & chips, meat pies, and more! Be sure to take a picture with the giant leaky cauldron.

• The Fountain of Fair Fortune: A bar carrying Butterbeer, Pumpkin Juice, and adult beverages.
• Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor: Find magical ice cream flavors at Florean’s! Soft serve Butterbeer ice cream is a favorite, but you can get Clotted Cream, Granny Smith, Earl Grey and Lavender, Chocolate Chili, Sticky Toffee Pudding, Salted Caramel Blondie, Chocolate and Raspberry, and more.

Once you’re finished wandering Diagon Alley, hop back on the Hogwarts Express and head back to Hogsmeade. Wander the town some more then settle yourself on the bridge to Jurrasic Park to watch the light show on Hogwarts Castle.

Hopefully, this guide to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter was helpful to you. There are tons of other rides in both Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios, but we only stuck to Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. Beyond the rides, shops, and food, there are so many beautiful little details all around both parks. I hope you spend time just wandering!

Harry Potter: Best Ways To Travel Within Wizarding World

• The magical community in Harry Potter has various means of transportation, including broomsticks, the Knight Bus, the Floo Network, Portkeys, and Apparition.
• Each mode of transportation has its own risks and requirements, such as the need for balance on a broomstick or the danger of splinching during Apparition.
• Traveling with magical creatures, like dragons, can be challenging and requires expertise, while modified muggle vehicles are technically illegal due to the exposure of magic to the muggle world.

Just like Muggles who traveled through air, land, and sea, the magical community of Harry Potter also has several means of transportation. Many use enchanted items and vehicles for their journey, but they can also ride magical creatures or even teleport using some magical tools.

Harry Potter: 8 Powerful Magical Plants

In Harry Potter , the further the location of arrival, the more complex the tool is, as one even needs a license to use certain transportation. Just like muggles who need a license to drive a vehicle, legality is needed to ensure safety and security. One fast, yet risky mode of transportation may cause a separation of body parts if not done properly.

The Old-Fashion Way

Riding a broomstick for the magical community is one of the earliest skills one acquires when starting a wizard's education in a magical school like Hogwarts. A Broomstick is arguably equivalent to riding a muggle bike, as it does not need a license, although it does need balance and to completely focus on the ride.

Flying with broomsticks is also used in sports, such as in Quidditch games and broom racing. In the muggle world, flying with broomsticks is also one of the most popular stereotypes of witches and wizards since ages ago, which happened to also be used in the Harry Potter universe.

For Stranded Witches And Wizards

Traveling by ground is also used for the magical community of Harry Potter , especially those who are residing in muggle-populated areas. The wizards and witches who are stranded or lost, or having some type of issue, might raise their wand to command the bus.

Harry Potter: 5 Most Useful Spells In Daily Life, Ranked

As depicted in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , Harry raised his wand while standing face to face with Sirius Black who was in his animagus form , accidentally calling the bus to come. The Knight Bus looks like any normal double-decker bus, but it possesses magical abilities to pass through muggle vehicles without being seen.

Floo Network

Traveling through chimneys.

Apparently, it is not only Santa Claus who takes advantage of chimneys but wizards and witches use them as a means of transportation. The Floo network allows wizards to travel from one place to another that shares a connection in the form of a chimney.

To travel, one has to obtain a Floo powder in hand, pronouncing the desired location – with said connection – and poof! There they are. However, it is important to clearly say the name of the location, or else one might arrive in the wrong place. Just look at how Harry Potter ended up in Knockturn Alley, a dodgy and risky place, instead of in his intended location of Diagon Alley .

Bewitched Mundane Items

Who would have thought wizards and witches could be transported through socks, shoes, or other miscellaneous household items? Portkeys are one unique way of traveling as they are made up of bewitched mundane items that allow travelers to teleport into another location. This means of transportation, although fun, is quite risky as one might accidentally touch it and be sent to another place out of their will.

There are a few instances where muggles accidentally touch a Portkey and are transported to another location without their knowledge. Another dangerous example is how Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory are transported into the Little Hangleton Graveyard, as the Triwizard Cup is turned into a Portkey by Barty Crouch Jr.

Dangerous Yet Fast

Apparition is a form of teleportation magic that allows users to travel long distances in less time without enchanted items, magical creatures, and other means of transportation. Although fast, it is considered one of the riskiest transportation modes in the Harry Potter universe.

Apparating with a lack of skill might cause splinching, causing body parts to be wounded or worse, separated from each other. To apparate, the Ministry of Magic requires citizens to have a license that they obtain through classes. Hogwarts is one of the places that offer apparition classes, teaching students how to apparate properly and safely.

Magical Creatures

Especially huge ones.

Another means of transportation is by flying with dragons, hippogriffs, thestrals, and so on. Using magical creatures for travel means said creatures have to be big enough to carry a human – or even more than one – depending on the passengers. Also, traveling with them requires a great deal of knowledge of the creatures, as they might be hard to control and unpredictable.

There are many instances of traveling with magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe, and riding a dragon is considered to be the hardest one. Dragons are highly complicated creatures and truly tricky to handle, as riding on them needs perseverance and bravery.

Enchanted Vehicles

Technically illegal due to muggles exposure.

There are many instances where wizards and witches modified muggles' vehicles into magic ones, such as the Weasleys’ Ford Anglia Flying Car, Rubeus Hagrid’s Motorcycle, and so on. However, these vehicles are considered as “Enchanted Muggle Artifacts” by the Ministry of Magic, and therefore illegal. It falls under the law of “Misuse of Muggle Artifacts”, as the items used mostly came from muggles common brands for vehicles.

Harry Potter: 7 Underappreciated Muggles

In H arry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , the muggles who saw the Weasleys’ flying car fall into a deep shock, as reported in the Daily Prophet. Although illegal, it cannot be denied that this specific means of transportation is one of the coolest ways of traveling.

A Magical Guide to the Best Harry Potter Places to Visit

We might not get a letter in the mail to go to Hogwarts, but we certainly can visit places that make us feel like we're in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! These 22 places must be on your bucket list if you're a fan of Harry Potter! From filming locations in England and Scotland, to unique places that look just like Diagon Alley, you need to travel here to experience the magic. These Harry Potter destinations will bring the magic. 

I'm a Potterhead. I'm admittedly late to the game. I didn't start even reading the books until 2016 but as soon as I did I realized that Harry Potter is some of the best story telling out there. And once you are whisked away into the the books and movies, you realize you want to delve into the destinations that inspired and look like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Naturally, as a traveler I want to know the best places to visit if you love Harry Potter! There are so many incredible destinations you can visit if you're obsessed with Harry Potter like me! I've come up with 22 must visit destinations if you love Harry Potter.

I've made a list of the best places to visit if you're a Harry Potter fan, filming locations, and places that inspired J.K. Rowling and the directors. Grab a glass of butter beer and let's hitch up our broomsticks!

If you have to pick just one city to get a taste of Harry Potter, my recommendation is London . London is the best place to engulf yourself in the world of Harry Potter. I'm going to organize this list by country to make it easier to plan your own trip!

1) Platform 9 3/4, King's Cross Station, London, UK

And of course we start where it all began! The famed platform 9 ¾ that was the gateway to the train, and then on to Hogwarts. This station is real and is located in London, UK. It's located between platforms 4 and 5. Be warned, there is often a queue that forms for people waiting to take photos here. But there’s a gift shop nearby selling plenty of Potter-themed gifts like wands and robes.

This station opened in 1852 as the original King's Cross Station but is now a part of King's Cross St Pancras tube/railway station complex. Plus, it's in London where you'll find plenty of Harry Potter looking scenes.

2) Leadenhall Market, London , UK

Leadenhall Market is another incredible location in London that was used as a shooting location for Harry Potter and the the Goblet of Fire as the entrance for the Leaky Cauldron. It's a beautiful Victorian covered market that's worth a visit even if you're not a Harry Potter fan.

However, it's especially magical to wander around if you know that scene from the movie. Guide to London here !

3) Millennium Bridge, London, UK

The Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that crosses the River Thames in London. It's a really beautiful bridge and was actually closed down for a while after it opened because it started to wobble, specifically, for “excessive swaying.”

However, it reopened in 2002 and has been a popular tourist attraction ever since. The bridge was featured in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in a scene where the Death Eaters destroy the bridge.

4) Warner Brothers Studio in London , UK

This is a no-brainer. If you're a Harry Potter fan, you have to visit the Warner Brothers Studio in London . It's the place where all 8 of the Harry Potter movies were filmed. You can take a tour of the studio and see all the sets and props used in the movies.

Even as a fan, I was worried this might not be worth it. JUST GO! It's so cool to see the real sets, walk in the Great Hall, try a Butter Beer, and see the detailed costumes, and props!

The studio is just outside of London in Leavesden and is a quick train ride to venture into the Great Hall, Dumbledore's Office, The WEasley Burrow, Hagrid's Hut, Snape's Office, the Forbidden Forest and so much more!

5) Piccadilly Circus, London , UK

Piccadilly Circus is a major road junction in the West End of London where 6 streets converge. Its central location makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of London. It's even said that if you stand here for long enough you'll run into someone you know!

It can get pretty crowded but there are several Harry Potter scenes that show up here! You might recognize it from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) when Harry, Ron, and Hermione run from some Death Eaters.

6) London Zoo, Regents Park, London , UK

The London Zoo is located in Regent's Park in the center of London. It's home to over 600 species of animals! The zoo was featured on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for the Reptile House where a snake speaks to Harry.

7) Georgian House Hotel, London

The Georgian House Hotel is a lovely hotel located in London that will make you feel like you've entered the Gryffindor Common Room! With creative rooms that look just like Hogwarts! The hotel also offers a walking tour of spots in London that were featured in the Harry Potter series.

Outside of London there are plenty of places around England that are filming locations or look just like they'd fit in to Harry Potter!

8) Alnwick Castle, England

This is not only a beautiful castle, but the place where the Hogwarts students get their flying lessons from Madame Hooch in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

9) Oxford University, Oxford, England

As soon as you step inside Oxford University you'll feel like you got your very own Hogwarts letter!

The University of Oxford is one of the most famous universities in the world with an illustrious history. The school was definitely an inspiration for places like the Great Hall (in fact Oxford's Christ Church's Great Hall looks almost identical), the exterior of the school, and the dorms as well. Also, the Bodleian Library is when Harry throws on his invisibility cloak to search for a book, that was filmed in this library!

10) Gloucester Cathedral, England

I LOVE this area of England. I'd go as far to say it's one of the prettiest areas in the world. The Cotwolds in general are absolutely idyllic, but the Gloucester Cathedral is stunning. The halls are where scenes from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets are filmed. This is where Harry finds the cat, Mrs. Norris, petrified.

11) York, England

This beautiful village in England is well worth a trip. The Shambles looks and feels like Diagon Alley, it's a narrow street where the buildings seem to tumble on to each other! You can also find some great souvenirs here!

12) Freshwater West Beach, Wales

This, to me, is one of the saddest scenes of all the books and movies: burying Dobby. This beach was used to film Dobby's grave and it's also used for backdrop for Shell cottage.

13) Lacock Abbey, England

Another beautiful place in the Cotswolds ! The interior of Hogwarts is featured at Lacock Abbey in the courtyard. You'll also recognize Lily and James Potter's house and Slughorn's hide out in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Next up is Scotland ! This is not only where J.K. Rowling wrote the series, but a place of huge inspiration and filming locations for Harry Potter.

14) The Elephant House, Edinburgh, Scotland

This is the spot that J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter!! You can feel the creativity oozing out of this cafe. As you look up at the cobblestone streets and incredible architecture of Edinburgh, you'll see why this was such a great place to write. This cafe is also home to many other writers and artists so you know it's a spot where your mind can wander.

15) Glenfinnan Viaduct/ Jacobite Steam Train, Scotland

The scene as the Hogwarts Express is barrelling down the lush countryside? That's the Jacobite Steam Train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct! You can go on a train ride yourself or head to the viewing area to get a shot of the train crossing the viaduct.

16) Glencoe, Scotland

You might recognize this as the scene of Hagrid's Hut and the Bridge to Nowhere as well as many outdoor scenes from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The lush landscape makes the perfect backdrop for many of the epic scenes in the movie.

17) Loch Shiel, Scotland

The dramatic scenes of looking at Hogwarts from across the lake? That was filmed at the beautiful Loch Sheil! Whether you're a Potterhead or not, this is a beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors and pretend like you're heading to Hogwarts or riding Buckbeak!

18) Balmoral Hotel, Scotland

This stunning hotel is actually where J.K. Rowling completed Harry Potter! This is writing in style and one day I'd like to write a book here. This 5-star hotel is pricey but beautiful.

19) University of Glasgow, Scotland

The beautiful stone archways make you feel like you just walked into Hogwarts. This is actually the fourth oldest university in the English speaking world! It's beautiful architecturally, and looks so similar to a place Harry, Ron, and Hermione might have studied!

20) The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in LA or Florida

If you're wanting a fun experience then check out the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida or Los Angeles, California. 21) Cliffs of Mohr, Ireland

These beautiful cliffs were where Dumbledore and Harry apparate to find Voldemort's Horcrux. This is a great background to take some epic shots! My guide to Ireland here !

22) Livraria Lello, Porto, Portugal

This beautiful bookstore just looks and feels like it belongs in Diagon Alley. J.K. Rowling actually used to live in Portugal so it could have been a place for inspiration! Be aware, it can get quite crowded as people huddle around to get a picture of the beautiful staircase.

From England and Scotland where J.K. Rowling wrote the series to Ireland and Portugal which were inspiration; these 22 best places to travel if you love Harry Potter will take your breath away.

More than just being a place of inspiration though, each locale has something special that makes them worth visiting whether they're just tourist attractions or have incredible architecture. No matter what kind of traveler you are – if you want an adventure just like Harry, Ron, or Hermione, or you want to see the filming locations, or you want writing inspiration, I can't think of a better place to visit than the above!

The Flying Ford Anglia and the Hogwarts Express

There existed various methods of magical transportation [1] that were employed by wizardkind across the wizarding world .

Methods [ ]

Apparition [ ].

Harry Potter and Hermione Granger Apparating

Apparition allowed an individual to vanish and appear at another place almost instantly. [2] The act of Apparating created a noise ranging from a small pop to a loud crack. [3] [4] [5] [6] It was difficult technique to master and became increasingly unreliable over long distances. [3] It required complete concentration on the destination, determination and focus upon the desired location, and deliberation and certainty of reaching the goal. [3] Only of-age wizards who qualified for licences may have been able to legally Apparate. [3]

Apparition lessons in the Great Hall

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry offered Apparition lessons to students ages seventeen and older. [7]

Side-Along Apparition allowed those with licences to bring minors along with them. [8] Poor focus may have resulted in Splinching , which caused body parts to be separated and left behind. [9] [10] The process of Apparition was said to feel like being "forced through a very tight rubber tube". [8]

Floo Network [ ]

British Ministry of Magic employees using the Floo Network

Floo powder was a magical green powder that was thrown into a lit fireplace and allowed for a portal to connect to another fireplace at a desired location. [11] The system was operated and overseen by the Floo Network , which was based at the British Ministry of Magic . [12] [13]

A fireplace had to be connected to the Floo Network for one to travel to it, [11] and fireplaces could be connected temporarily, in the case of travelling to Muggle homes. [14] The Floo Network could also be used as a form of communication between wizards. [15] [16]

For America, the Magical Congress of the United States of America oversaw the Floo Network. The network appeared to be divided into regions as the "Southern Floo Network", as mentioned in the newspaper The New York Ghost . [17]

A flying lesson taking place at Hogwarts

Wizards used broomsticks to travel long distances, [18] or for sport, particularly in the game Quidditch . [19] [20] This skill of flying on brooms was taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to first-years in Flying classes . [18] The Cushioning Charm invented by Elliot Smethwyck provided comfort on broomsticks. [19] Some modern broomsticks included the Comet , Cleansweep , Nimbus , and Firebolt . [19]

In Asia and the Middle East, flying carpets were the primary form of wizarding transport, but were currently designated as Muggle artefacts in Britain and were therefore illegal to enchant . They also could not be imported, despite at least one merchant 's continued efforts to do so. This ban seemed to be relatively recent as Bartemius Crouch Senior 's grandfather owned a flying Axminster before they were made illegal. [21]

Flying Ford Anglia

Vehicles such as cars [22] [23] [24] and motorcycles [25] [26] could also be modified to be capable of flight, though this was also technically illegal under Misuse of Muggle Artefacts laws. [22]

A range of flying magical creatures were also available for transport, such as Thestrals [27] [26] and Hippogriffs . [28] [29] When visiting Hogwarts for the 1994 Triwizard Tournament , the Beauxbatons students travelled in a carriage drawn by Abraxan winged horses . [30] Day students of Mahoutokoro (students between the ages of seven and eleven) that did not board at the school flew on the backs of flocks of giant storm petrels every day. [31]

The Knight Bus took stranded wizards to anywhere in the United Kingdom . [32] [33]

Portkey [ ]

Transporation via portkeys

Portkeys were magical objects that allowed for travel across extreme distances or to places that have been charmed against detection. Portkeys may have sent unsuspecting people anywhere, and so they required Ministry authorisation to use and operate. They were usually disguised as ordinary rubbish, such as a crushed aluminium can or a dirty, discarded sock, so Muggles were more likely ignore them, though incidents of muggles being transported had happened. [3] [39]

Portkeys could be set to activate either at a prearranged time, or as soon as the person came in contact with them. [3]

Durmstrang students travelled on a ship when visiting Hogwarts for the 1994 Triwizard Tournament . Even though it appeared from a whirlpool in the Hogwarts lake , there was still rowing involved. The ship probably acted like a boat on water but with anti-water spells of some sort to prevent water entering the boat. [30]

A Vanishing Cabinet allowed objects and creatures to transport from one cabinet to the other. [40] [41]

The British Ministry of Magic used the Toilet network as the official way to gain entry to its headquarters . [42]

From a rugged castle in Northumberland to the historic city of Exeter to the graveyards of Scotland’s Capital, Edinburgh, there’s no shortage of wizarding locations and inspiration throughout England and Scotland. Here’s an ultimate bucket list and your complete Harry Potter UK travel guide for muggles!

Sometimes I wish that I could just apparate myself around the world. You know? It would be so convenient, save so much time and a lot of money in the form of air travel!

Unfortunately, I was born a muggle and am still waiting for that acceptance letter to arrive! 11 years and counting to be precise. If you’re in the same boat as me (i.e. not in the boat taking you to the First Year’s feast), then Alohomora away because today I’m unlocking some of the best travel destinations for Harry Potter lovers around the UK!

Edinburgh, Scotland

Do you want to taste some tea in the coffee shop where JK Rowling wrote the first few chapters of Harry Potter? Have you ever wanted to wander the streets which inspired streets in the series? Or do you fancy splurging and spending a night staying in the very suite where the wizarding series was completed?

Well, you can do all this and more in Edinburgh. Wizarding highlights of this UNESCO designated literary city include a venture into the writer’s museum as well as a wander through Greyfriar’s Kirkyard (an ancient cemetery where Rowling most certainly found plenty of inspiration for the names in the magical series).

Oxford, AKA the City of Dreaming Spires, is home to one of the most historic universities in the world, as well as plenty of stunning architecture and several of the oldest museums in Europe. If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter series, then you may well recognise a fair few of the locations around the city as being the backdrop of many of the films.

Some of the very best Harry Potter inspired locations in Oxford include Christ Church College (the Dining Hall there even inspired the Hogwarts Great Hall) and the Divinity School of the Bodleian Library.

And, if you’ve not yet read the books, then you simply need to head to Blackwell’s Bookshop where you’ll find the largest single room selling books in the world!

It’s little-known that JK Rowling attended Exeter University where she studied Classics and French. During her time studying, she spent a year abroad in the French Capital of Paris. (If you’re interested, then here’s a complete guide to finding Harry Potter inspiration in Paris )

During her time at Exeter, it’s almost certain that JK Rowling was inspired by the historic Devonian capital. So much so that many of the names and places probably inspired locations in the series.

For example, the tiny shopping street of Gandy Street may well have inspired Diagon Alley. Today, No. 15 Gandy Street is even home to a magically themed bar by the name of ‘Cauldron Inn’.

Elsewhere in the city, the Vaults may well have led to the creation of Gringotts Wizarding Bank, while the beautiful door of 10 Cathedral Close is likely the source of the intricate and detailed carvings on the door of the Room of Requirement.

If you’re hungry while seeking our Harry Potter destinations, then head to the Firehouse, a pub which may well have inspired the Leakey Cauldron in the series!

For plenty of Harry Potter filming locations, as well as a glimpse into the magical wizarding world in the form of the studios and even a few shops, you must visit the UK capital of London. From London, it’s easy to take day trips to Oxford (an hour away via train) , as well as to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour (less than an hour via train) .

Many of the names mentioned in the Harry Potter series actually find their roots in East Devon, a beautiful area of England which is easily accessible from Exeter. For example, it’s thought that the quaint Devonian town of Ottery St Mary inspired the hometown of the Weasley family, Ottery St Catchpole in the books.

The market town of Chudleigh may well have inspired the Quidditch Team of the Chudley Cannons, while the seaside resort destination of Budleigh Salterton may well have been the inspiration for the name ‘Budleigh Babberton’ (former hometown of Horace Slughorn).

Located in the beautiful county of Wiltshire and not far from the city of Bath, the village of Lacock is a perfectly preserved medieval settlement characterised by its timber-framed cottages and stone structures.

But what makes Lacock perhaps so special and unique (not to mention its position in the fringes of the Cotswolds) is the lack of TV masts and satellite dishes dotted across the village.

Largely owned and operated by the National Trust, today the picturesque English Lacock has become a go-to for many a film crew, including Downton Abbey and Wolf Hall.

Of course, Lacock and its nearby Abbey have also been used to film many scenes of Harry Potter, including the village where Slughorn hides away in the 6th books and some of the Hogwarts classrooms of the first and second novels.

If you enjoy your filming locations served with a side of history, then a visit to the historic Alnwick Castle may well be in order. Located in Northumberland, an English region well-known for its piece of Hadrian’s Wall, as well as the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were both filmed at the 11th-century Castle.

Of all the Harry Potter UK destinations, Alnwick Castle is certainly one for the culture lovers! Of all the magical Harry Potter experiences to have in the UK, one of the best is that of getting on the Jacobite Steam Train in Scotland, which is the train that’s used as the ‘Hogwarts Express’ in the films. The university city of Durham can be found in NorthEast England and has several locations of note that avid Harry Potter fans should know about.

I review the ‘VIP’ Harry Potter tour in the UK – it’s crowd-free and comes with free champagne

EVER since the Warner Bros. Studio Tour opened in 2012, fans of the boy wizard have been flocking from all over the world to see the sets and the props.

The tour's popularity is both a blessing and a curse - with lengthy queues and large crowds becoming part of the experience.

However, one new tour offers to give Harry Potter fans the time and the space to freely explore the attraction.

Earlier this year, tour operator International Friends launched their Semi-private evening experience at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter .

The tours operate every Friday evening, with guests arriving at the attraction at 6.15pm.

Tour groups are capped to a maximum of 50 people, giving guests the space to explore the Leavesden studio without the crowds.

While guests are provided with a private coach transfer from London , I drove to the tour simply because it was easier for me - and my parking was hassle-free to organise with International Friends too.

Once I'd met up with my group, just outside the towering chess pieces, we moved into the entrance where we were greeted by a member of Warner Bros staff.

As the last tour group to enter into the attraction, we avoided all of the queues, which can keep visitors awaiting for at least 30 minutes at peak times.

Our small group was then given a private welcome talk before we were led into the Great Hall.

Inside the Great Hall, I was given a glass of champagne (non-alcoholic options were also available) and made to feel like a VIP.

As I moved through the room, which was far less crowded than my previous visits, I was easily able to take photos next to some of my favourite sets from the film series.

After enjoying an extended amount of time in the Great Hall, we went on to explore other parts of the behind-the-scenes experience, including the Gryffindor Common Room , Snape's Potions Classroom, Dumbledore's Office and many, many, more.

My niece and I had plenty of time - and more importantly space - to look at the sets and take photos alongside our favourite ones.

There were no lengthy queues for the green screens either, so my niece and I were able to live out our dreams of riding a quidditch broom - all without spending too much time waiting around.

As our visit coincided with the Magical Mischief event , we were even able to make Howlers (the terrifying letters with enchanted messages) too.

From posing for snaps next to the Hogwarts Express to creating a souvenir video battling a dementor on one of the train's carriages, our three-hour visit moved seamlessly thanks to the lack of crowds.

At points, we practically had the space to ourselves.

Even our pitstop for Butterbeer, the syrupy butterscotch juice, topped with liquid marshmallow, was devoid of all crowds.

I would say we caught up with other visitors, who weren't part of the semi-private tour, as we posed for photos on Hagrid's flying motorcycle.

That being said, this was the only time we queued to take photos, so it wasn't a frustrating wait in the slightest.

Because the Warner Bros. Studio tour closes at 10pm, you'll start to hear announcements that the attraction will be closing from around 9pm.

Make sure you leave enough time to get through the entirety of the tour, without having to rush, and leave plenty of cash for souvenirs in the gift shop.

If you're travelling with young children, encourage them to save up their pocket money - as they'll definitely want to buy a sweet treat from Honeydukes.

Semi-private evening experience tickets cost £199 for a full-paying adult and £195 for a child aged between 5 to 15, with infants going free.

Tickets include entry into the tour, return coach transfers to London and a glass of champagne in the Great Hall.

While tickets don't come cheap, it's a magical experience for Harry Potter fans who want a crowd-free time at the ever-popular tour.

Other visitors on the semi-private tour have also praised their experience.

In an online review , one person wrote: "I can’t recommend this semi-private tour enough. As we came in after the last daytime tour, we practically had the place to ourselves."

• Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was filmed at Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire in Wales. While the film sets were dismantled years ago, Dobby's Grave can be found on a sand dune on the beach.
• Both Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were Alnwick Castle . Set in Northumberland, entry tickets cost £20.50.
• Glenfinnan Viaduct is well-known for being part of the journey on the Hogwarts Express. While the magical train ride has been indefinitely paused over safety concerns, fans can still visit the famous viaduct.

From actual locations that inspired the story to accurately done replicas, these Airbnbs will give all types of travelers (muggles and squibs alike) a fun experience. Film tourism is a great way to have unique and exciting travel experiences that are unforgettable. While visiting the actual filming destinations may be costly due to the series’ array of settings and acclaim, visiting these Airbnbs may be more feasible. Especially because many themed accommodations provide exclusive stays and attractions that may not be available at the actual sites. West Bow Flat

This accommodation in Edinburgh, Scotland is for travelers that prefer more artful representation of the Harry Potter franchise. This residence actually is in the area that inspired Harry Potter author, JK Rowlings. This area served as creative inspiration for Diagon Alley, which is a popular location in the wizarding world. The central shopping area (both in real life and in the films) is ornamented with cobblestones, pubs and many alleys lined with restaurants. It is no surprise that fans wanting to live out their wizard life dream appreciate this accommodation. This one bedroom, one bath can house up to three guests and costs around $133 per night. The rustic apartment takes subtle inspiration from Harry Potter for a more classic stay with its canonically significant location. 

Harry Potter Home 

Near Universal Orlando, there is an entire home dedicated to the aesthetic of Harry Potter. This home can accommodate up to 12 guests and is a spacious five-bedroom, three-bath property. Guests feel enchanted once they enter this outwardly unsuspecting home, which resembles the grand castle that housed the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The home is located in a quiet residential area, so it is perfect for families that want a more private and bonding experience. From Victorian paintings, a gothic dining hall, rooms labeled by wizarding houses, Harry Potter novels and even fun family board games, this house really feels like a mini wizarding castle.

There is plenty of entertainment for guests at this accommodation, including a Nintendo Switch in the common room. On top of these property amenities, the home is only around 10 miles from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and 18 miles from downtown Orlando. It is centrally located and every room is thoroughly and professionally decorated with Harry Potter displays. Guests can stay in this home for $172 a night. 

The Common Room Condo

This condo in Victoria, Canada has been transformed into a gryffindor common area in Hogwarts. The 400 square foot space is a multi-level condo in a central area and is ideal for tried and true gryffindors. The rustic accommodation is equipped with a full kitchen, an upstairs loft and a wonderfully lit bay window. Guests can even people-watch while relaxing in the bay window area. Throughout the condo guests will notice special touches like a large portrait painting of Dobby the elf and pictures of other characters like Remus Lupin. Fans will enjoy the detailed decor and bustling atmosphere that surrounds this condo, which they can book for $76 a night. 

The Sorcerer’s Lodge

This Airbnb is an apartment in Colmar, France that can accommodate up to six guests. The two-bedroom, one-bath apartment has nice decor that nods to the complex storyline of the Harry Potter series. The common areas have the most outstanding references to the films while the bedrooms have striking yet classic decor with props throughout. Guests can spot Hedwig, spare broomsticks, trunks for platform 9 ¾ and even extra cauldrons in this accommodation. For around $229 a night, guests can relax in a luxe apartment home where they can imagine themselves as students of the illustrious Beauxbatons (the French wizarding school from which Fluer Delacour derived). 

School of Witchcraft Dorm

For true believers of the magical and mystical, this Salem Harry Potter dor m accommodation will be just what the wizard ordered. This ‘dorm’ is located in a bed and breakfast, so guests get their own room with shared common spaces. With dorm-style beds that resemble those of Harry and Ron, guests can really place themselves in the young magic student’s shoes. The creative owner even hand-painted much of the decor so guests would feel fully immersed in the magic. Plus, this accommodation is located in Salem and there is no better place to have authentic magic experiences. Downtown Salem is close by but there are also stores and restaurants across the street. For $345 a night small families can book a stay in this room, which has two single beds and a 24/7 breakfast bar.

The Boy Who Lived is coming back to life.

Max announced in April 2023 that it had ordered a TV series based on the massively popular Harry Potter novels, with original book author J.K. Rowling attached as an executive producer. And though the expansive project is still in its early stages, we’re going to make like Hermione and get a jump on our studying, via the following round-up of intel about Max ‘s sweeping series.

“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” HBO boss Casey Bloys said at the time of the series’ announcement. “ Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

But how, exactly, will Max’s version take shape? How many seasons will it run? Who will star? What will the Harry Potter series be about?

Max ‘s upcoming series is described as a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s novels, so it stands to reason that the project will follow young wizard Harry Potter as he attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and repeatedly faces off against the villainous Lord Voldemort.

However, the streamer has not yet announced who will write the series and how, exactly, the story told in Rowling’s sprawling novels will be adapted for the small screen. As of February 2024, three candidates — Francesca Gardiner, Tom Moran and Kathleen Jordan, per Deadline — were still in the running to be named the series’ head writer, and a decision is expected in June.

How many seasons have been ordered?

Ostensibly, seven — matching the number of books in Rowling’s series — but it’s not completely clear. When the Harry Potter TV series was first ordered, Max noted its plans for the show to span a decade. It has yet to be confirmed, though, if that equates to 10 seasons , or simply a 10-year lifespan for the show. Eight Harry Potter films were previously made, with the final Deathly Hallows novel getting split into two movies; it remains to be seen what approach Max will take with its own adaptation.

Who will star in the Harry Potter series?

Casting for Harry & Co. has yet to be revealed, but we’ll update this post as soon as the series adds to its ensemble. In the meantime, peruse our dream castings !

Is J.K. Rowling involved with the show?

Indeed, Rowling is on board as an executive producer, news that was met with many fans’ ire after Rowling’s statements on sex and gender in recent years have widely been deemed transphobic.

“ Max ’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series,” Rowling said in a statement when the Harry Potter series was first announced. Days later, having seen the criticism of her involvement with the show, Rowling weighed in more sarcastically in an X post : “Dreadful news, which I feel duty bound to share. Activists in my mentions are trying to organise yet another boycott of my work, this time of the Harry Potter TV show. As forewarned is forearmed, I’ve taken the precaution of laying in a large stock of champagne.”

When will the Harry Potter series premiere?

You don’t need to have your wands at the ready for a while longer: The Harry Potter series adaptation is currently on track for a 2026 premiere.

“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,” Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav said during a company earnings call in February 2024. “We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max . We’re aiming for a debut in 2026.”

What have you heard?

Why? The movies are great. I have no desire to watch a different adaptation and no desire to give Rowling any more money.

Well, the movies left out A LOT.

I am thrilled about this. JK Rowling is responsible for improving literacy in two generations or more.

It was always going to be this. Based on later books, I’m sure that the first 2-3 books had lots of cuts, ie stuff she cut out. They could be fleshed out with more stuff about how bad Harry’s home life was. Or about how much Hermione was struggling with loneliness prior to befriending Ron/Harry. Think 10-11 eps per season. 12+ or more in later books. Enough to get to 80-90 eps. . Frankly, the later books were very disappointing when turned into films. Way too much time was spent of SFX moments, while valuable plot/storylines were ignored. I’d love a faithful adaptation of the books.

and that choir singing ‘Double double toil and trouble’ was a complete waste of time (and film).

A faithful adaption would be amazing to see. Any involvement from JKR is definitively the best option for any Potter project. Hoping they will fix the many mistakes and omissions that plague the movies.

The books are a load of garbage. Pure drivel.

The only reason I am mildly interested is seeing a proper live action portrayal of Ginny Weasley. The movies did to her what the X-men movies did to Cyclops made a great character into a poor one.

I think all of the Weasley’s were treated pretty bad in the movies.

Give me a proper adaptation of MOLLY Weasley, who was very short changed.

JK Rowling’s views “in sex and gender” have NOT been widely condemnex, they have in fact been widely supported save a few loud, ignorant activist voices. She has been proven right time and time again and is one of the strongest voices for the rights of women and the protection of children.

She’s the Donald Trump of womens rights. Right wing poster girl who spouts propaganda and lies.

The movies definitely left out a lot from the books. Will be interested if they will follow Hermione’s quest to free house elves from slavery. Stuff like that. Could be a very different feel compared to the movies, so that may make it a very interesting watch.

Rowling being involved is ONLY reason I’m interested..

There are two kinds of people: Those who judge shows on their merits, and idiots.

Hopefully in this adaptation Hermione Granger ends up with Harry in the end as JK as stated she should have done in the books countless times

I won’t watch anything that has JK Rowling’s name attached to it. And once again, shame on TVLine for promoting it. Officlally done with this site.

Scotland's so-called “Harry Potter Train” has halted its service until further notice amid a dispute over safety regulations, depriving visiting fans of the books and films of a major spot for selfies.

The steam train is seen snaking its way across the Glenfinnan Viaduct in two Harry Potter movies as the Hogwarts Express between Mallaig on the Scottish west coast and Fort William at the foot of the highest British mountain, Ben Nevis.

The operator West Coast Railways (WCR) said that the train would not operate until a decision is made as to whether the historic steam train can continue to run without the safety measure of central locking.
