Free tours of Vienna

If you'd like to decide how much a city tour was worth only once it's finished, then you'll be ideally looked after by the organizers of "Free Tours" of Vienna.

The tours are charged for at the end - that's how the new "Free Tours" of the city work. Certified tour guides wait at fixed meeting points for tourists who'd like to go on a tour of the city. Most of the various walking tours lead to the most important sights in downtown Vienna and give a good initial overview of the city. The guide leads the tour in return for tips. That means the participants give the amount they deem appropriate at the end of the city tour. If they didn't enjoy it, they don't have to pay a cent.

  • Jewish Quarter
  • St Rupert's Church

Vienna Free Walking Tour

On the day of the activity, we'll meet at the indicated time in front of the  Danubius fountain in Albertinaplatz , in the heart of Vienna's historic centre. After a quick introduction, we'll begin our free walking tour of  the Imperial city , delving deep into its legendary culture, history and traditions.

In a city known worldwide for its incredible music, it's only right that the first stop on our walking tour will be the Vienna State Opera , also known as the  Staatsoper . The Neo-Rennaissance style building, which was bombed during World War II , is home to one of the world's best-renowned opera companies. After admiring its architecture and hearing about its history, we'll resume the tour and stroll towards  St Stephen's Cathedral , or Stephansdom, whose spectacular Gothic-style spire can be seen throughout almost all of Vienna.

As we admire the diverse architectural styles that make this city so interesting, we'll make our way to its  most visited monument: the Hofburg . This Imperial Palace was the residence of the Habsburgs  for over 600 years. As you explore the different buildings that make up the historic complex, the guide will reveal interesting facts about the  most influential dynasty in Europe's modern history .

Following in the footsteps of the Habsburg family, we'll then arrive at the  Imperial Crypt , the final resting place of over thirty different Austrian emperors and empresses. Amongst the royal tombs, the sarcophagi of  Franz Joseph I and the beloved Empress Sissi  are particular highlights. Not far from the crypt, the  Burggarten  is located. This peaceful urban park is home to a sculpture of the most famous Austrian musician of all time:  Mozart .

Continuing the free walking tour, we'll take a stroll through  Vienna's Jewish Quarter , discovering the important events that took place in this historic neighbourhood. The final stop on our route will be the ancient  St Rupert's Church , considered to be the oldest church in the city.

Finally, after 2 and a half hours of exploring the most charming corners of Vienna, we'll bring our walking tour to an end.

Free Vienna Walking Tours

With local guides.

free tour vienna

Vienna's immense beauty of architecture, lavish palaces, and modern and vibrant culture make it an interesting city to explore and keep coming back to.

It is a very walkable city and the best way to get to know Vienna is to explore it on foot.

And, this post lists and compares the different free walking tours available in Vienna, including Old Town, World War 2, street art, and alternative tours.

All tours are led by local guides who will share their inside knowledge and the history of Vienna and Austria.

And, in the video below, Francis takes you on a virtual tour around Vienna's Ring.

So, without further ado, here is our schedule of tours.

OVERVIEW + SCHEDULE

What has become known as free guided tours are tours that operate on a pay-what-you-wish or tips-based model.

There is no cost to take a tour and you are not obligated to pay your tour guide anything, though most people do.

Searching Availability...

More Tour Options?  More tours are  available here  or you can read the individual tour sections below.

  • World War 2
  • Alternative/Street Art
  • Hop-on-Hop-Off
  • Other Things to Do in Vienna

The free tours of Austria's capital tend to be welcome or orientation tours and focus on the historic city center and cover architecture and history and just about every company offers paid walking tours as well.

Tours operate in English as well as German, Spanish, and sometimes French.

Depending on which free walking tour of Vienna you take, you can expect to see some of the following sites:

  • Danube River
  • Vienna State Opera House
  • Albertinaplatz
  • Hofburg Palace

Most tours will also include information about the Habsburg Dynasty, as this family was instrumental to the history of Vienna.

Because these tours fit into every budget, they are very popular. Some companies allow up to 40 people per tour guide.

With that in mind, if you want to avoid large groups or would like to go off the beaten path, then we recommend exploring small group tours.

Some popular walking tours that are not free include:

  • Hitler’s Vienna
  • Beer Tasting Tours
  • Street Art Tours
  • Schönbrunn Palace

FREE TOURS INCLUDED IN BUS TICKETS AND TOURIST PASSES

If you are considering using a hop-on-hop-off bus to visit Vienna attractions, then keep in mind that  Big Bus Tours  offers walking tours when you purchase a hop-on-hop-off ticket.

Likewise, if you are considering purchasing  the Vienna Pass , a tourist attraction discount pass, then note that it already includes a free walking tour (not pay-what-you-wish).

The Vienna Pass can save you over 50% of the retail price of participating tours and attractions and lets you skip most ticket lines.

Old Town Tours

Several companies are offering pay-what-you-like city tours in Vienna.

All are well-reviewed and offer several daily departures as well as tours in multiple languages.

In Vienna, local companies are the main free tour providers, with companies such as Sandemans absent from the market.

As we mentioned in the previous section, if you are considering a tourist discount pass or a hop-on-hop-off bus ticket, you probably already have a free walking tour included.

World War 2 Tours

Vienna played an important role in World War 2, so it makes perfect sense that there are at least one or two pay-what-you-wish walking tours focused on this historical aspect of the city.

These tours tend to cover what the city looked like when it was occupied, including information about certain architectural details from the era that remain to this day.

Some of these outings are free, but others will require you to purchase a ticket.

In addition to their old town tours, they also offer a tour covering the history of Adolf Hitler in Vienna in English from Thursday to Sunday at 15:00 (3 pm).

This same tour is also available in Spanish on Wednesday at 14:00 (2 pm).

The tour duration is 2 hours and the meeting point of the tour is Helmut zilk platz.

Your guide will be waiting for you at the square holding the yellow Prime Tours umbrella.

Check our calendar to find all the free walking tours currently offered by Prime Tours.

Good Vienna Tours

Much like its competitors, this company also offers a tour covering the history of WW2 in Vienna.

This is a paid tour, and tickets start at €25 for adults or €19 for children.

You can enjoy this outing every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday at 14:30 (2:30 pm).

The meeting point of the tour is Albertinaplatz S .

The tour is approximately 2 and a half hours in length. Check our calendar for more details!

Alternative and Street Art Tours

If you're looking for a tour of Vienna that covers some of the more niche subjects of the city, there are a few companies offering outings that you might want to consider.

In addition to tours that provide details about the unique street art culture of Vienna, there are also pub crawls where you can learn all about the best places to grab a drink!

Most of these alternative tours require you to purchase a ticket, but there is at least one pay-what-you-wish option available.

Prime Tours | Street Art Tours

This tour is offered on weekends only and the company does have a pay-what-you-want street art tour of Vienna!

The tour is 2 hours in length and it is only provided in English at 15:00 (3 pm).

The meeting point of the tour is Spittelau U4/U6.

Being that it is so infrequent, we recommend booking well in advance to make sure you secure a spot on this tour.

If you can't take their pay-what-you-wish tour, they also offer a paid option every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 14:00 (2 pm).

Tickets start at just €34.99 for adults and €15.99 for children.

The tour lasts 2 hours..

Purchase tickets or learn more .

Prime Tours | Pub Crawl

Looking for the best bars and pubs in Vienna? This company offers a pub crawl that covers some of the most notable venues in the city.

You can expect free entrance to 4 different pubs and free drinks at each location!

This pub crawl is offered every Wednesday - Saturday at 21:00 (9 pm) and it lasts for approximately 5 hours. Tickets are only €19 per person.

The crawl starts from Marc-Aurel-S t raße 7.

Book this outing .

Self-Guided Exploration Game

This is an interesting alternative to all the other services on our list.

Rather than have a guide show you around town, this scavenger hunt game gives you clues to solve and sends you out to explore the city on your own!

Although this exploration game is not free, at only €32-€40 for up to 4 players, it costs about as much as you might tip a tour guide for any of the pay-what-you-wish tours listed above.

The tour lasts around 2 hours.

The following games are available in Vienna:

  • Medieval Legends of Vienna
  • Freud, Mozart, & Beethoven
  • The 7 Wonders of Vienna

And much, much more

North america, united kingdom & ireland, middle east & india, asia & oceania.

Our Free Tour

If you’re planning a trip to Vienna, Austria, there’s no better way to explore the city’s rich history and culture than taking a free walking tour with us. Here are a few reasons why you mustn’t miss this experience.

First and foremost, “Good Vienna Tours” is a highly reputable company with a team of knowledgeable and passionate guides who are eager to share their love and knowledge of the city with visitors. You’ll learn about Vienna’s fascinating history, including its role as the capital of the Habsburg Empire and its artistic and cultural achievements.

During the tour, you’ll explore the city’s most iconic landmarks, such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Hofburg Palace, and the State Opera House. Your guide will provide in-depth information about each site’s architecture, history, and cultural significance, giving you a deeper appreciation of Vienna’s rich heritage.

In addition to the famous landmarks, the tour will take you off the beaten path to explore the city’s hidden gems, such as quaint side streets and charming courtyards. Tourists often overlook these places but offer a unique glimpse into Vienna’s daily life and culture.

Of course, you will not experience a boring history lesson, although stories and anecdotes about our city’s famous daughters and sons are not missing. Marie Antoinette, Empress Sisi, Mozart, Sigmund Freud, and, yes, even Adolf Hitler have left their mark on this city.

And last but not least, Vienna is always about food and drink. Wiener Schnitzel, apple strudel, Heurige, and our coffee house culture are for many, what they remember most after a trip. And quite rightly so! With us, you will learn from experienced locals what is not in the guidebook, where you do not have to wait in a long line only to have a very average experience next to hordes of other tourists.

Perhaps the best part of “Good Vienna Tours” is that they are entirely free of charge. Of course, you’re encouraged to tip your guide at the end of the tour if you feel they did a good job, but there’s no obligation to pay anything upfront. This makes the tours accessible to travelers on a budget, as well as those who want to experience the city without feeling rushed or pressured.

Finally, taking a free walking tour with “Good Vienna Tours” is a great way to meet other travelers and locals. The tours are popular with visitors from all over the world, creating a fun and social atmosphere that’s perfect for solo travelers or those who want to make new friends. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask your guide for recommendations on the best places to eat, drink, shop, and explore in Vienna, giving you insider knowledge that you won’t find in a guidebook.

In conclusion, a free walking tour with “Good Vienna Tours” is a must-do experience if you’re planning a trip to Vienna. Not only will you learn about the city’s rich history and culture, but you’ll also discover hidden gems and meet other travelers from around the world. With a team of knowledgeable and passionate guides, “Good Vienna Tours” is the perfect way to explore this beautiful city.

For many tourists, the free walking tour concept is an alternative to traditional  guided tours. Free Tours are already available in many cities around the world and  are designed for solo travelers or couples. Contrary to regular tour services, there is  not a set price that you have to pay in advance for taking a tour. Instead, you pay the  amount that you consider appropriate after your tour experience by tipping your  guide. ´Free´ doesn´t mean worthless by any stretch of the imagination – in fact,  quite the opposite.

Our guides don´t receive any other income apart from the tips from their guests, so  they work extra hard to make sure that you have a great time on the tour. Instead of  lapsing into routine, their motivation to provide a top-quality tour has to be  extremely high – day by day, and tour by tour. In Vienna, guided walking tours  generally cost 20 to 40 Euro per person and you have to pay regardless of whether  you are satisfied with the tour or not. Our Tours let you decide how much the tour is  worth.

In Austria, all city tour guides must be officially licensed. As a result, we are  immensely knowledgeable professionals and have completed a two-year  apprenticeship. So, why do these Vienna experts work for free? It’s because they  realize that their level of income directly reflects the level of effort they put into their  tours and they love this concept! Our guides know that the better the tour, the  better the tips, so they always strive to be the best of the best.

Demand for our free walking tours is very high, especially during the summer  season, so we advise you to make a reservation in advance. You can book up to 5  spots per tour through our website if there are still free places on your desired date.

After booking, you will receive a confirmation. On the day of your free tour you  should arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes before your tour starts and ´check-in´  with our day manager. Please note that your reservation expires 5 minutes before  the start of the tour. If you have not arrived by this time, your place in the tour will be  offered to willing guests who have not made reservations. If you couldn’t book online  in advance, you can come to the meeting point early and if we have enough places  available or any no-shows, we will take you on a ´first come, first served´ basis.

Free tours are designed for individual travelers and small groups. If you are a bigger group of 6 or more we have a special, private offer for you. Just send an e-mail to [email protected] for requests and further information.

Our meeting point is in front of the Albertina building, right next to the fountain ´Albrechtsbrunnen´ (on the street level, not upstairs at the museum´s entrance!) – just look for our green umbrella! To get to Albertina by public transport use metro lines U1, U2, or U4, disembark at Karlsplatz and take the exit “Oper” (State Opera House). Also, tram lines 1, 2, 71, and D take you to the stop “Kärntner Ring/Oper”. Our walking tour will end close to Schwedenplatz next to the Danube canal.

Our free walking tours lead through the historic centre of Vienna and focus on the inner city’s highlights, like St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Imperial Palace (Hofburg), the Jewish Quarter, and many more. Please note: you won’t enter any sights or museums and therefore the tour does not include any entry fees. In addition to architecture and history, you will learn quite a lot about local traditions and hear some interesting gossip and legends about the city!

We are 100% weather-resistant. Our tours operate 365 days per year, seven days a week. Just make sure to bring proper equipment such as raincoats, umbrellas, sunscreen, hats or caps, water bottles, and wear appropriate shoes.

Due to the nature of walking tours, we aim to keep tour groups small and below 35 guests. There are rare exceptions during the high season, but 40 guests is our absolute maximum tour group size.

Our free walking tours are available in English and German. Occasionally, we also offer free walking tours in Spanish. Please check available dates on our website.

As we try to start our tours on time, we ask our guests to arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes before starting time. If you have a reservation, it will expire 5 minutes before starting time. To preserve tour quality for our other guests, it is not possible to join halfway through a tour or catch up with the group somewhere along the route.

Our guides don’t receive any set income from the company, they work on a tips-only basis. You get to decide how much his or her tour was worth to you. It’s recommended to bring small notes with you on the tour, so you can adapt the amount you want to tip based on the tour quality and your level of satisfaction.

Children under 16 accompanied by a parent are very welcome on our free walking tours. There is no need to book for them in advance.

Yes, Good Vienna also offers private tours. If you are a bigger group or interested in a tour in another language or focused on a special topic, feel free to send an e-mail to [email protected] for requests and further information, or simply fill in  our inquiry form .

Don´t worry! When you have a sudden need during the tour, there are several restrooms on the way. Just let your guide know and they will look for an appropriate stop. Most guides also offer a little tour break in a restaurant, where you can find food, drinks, restrooms, and free Wi-Fi.

We think that a free walking tour is the best way to be introduced to a city – and everybody should have the opportunity to join it regardless of their budget. However, a 2.5 hour tour can provide general information. It’s impossible to squeeze in all the interesting things to see in Vienna into such a small space of time. That’s why we offer other tours that give a deeper insight into specific topics. As we have to contract – and pay – specialized guides for these tours in advance, we also have to ask our guests to pay an attendance fee in advance. Tourism is one of the biggest businesses in the world, and we want to be part of it – but as a fair player. That’s why our prices for paid tours are very reasonable and we promise that you will receive only the best quality with us!

There is a minimum of 10 participants for our free walking tours. If fewer than 10 people show up, the tour will unfortunately be canceled.

Me and my partner did the night tour (this evening) and Christopher was the guide. He was so nice and friendly and really put you at ease. He clearly knew his stuff and helped bring Vienna's history to life. Great tour and even better Tour guide.

I had the pleasure of being in the free night tour. Ben was a great guide, giving us crucial facts and very interesting pieces of this gorgeous city. He has a very good English and amazing sense of humor and enthusiasm. We went to some of the most important parts of the city and we got to learn a lot, even if it was very cold. I highly recommend it!

On our first evening in Vienna, we wanted an overview of the Old Town and opted for one of the few evening free walking tours offered by Prime Tours. Our guide, Rikki, is a licensed guide with an art history major, so he shared with us not just timelines for the buildings but interesting stories about them. He also was able to let us know which galleries/museums had special exhibits and where to go for authentic Viennese cuisine. Walking with Rikki on a moonlight night through the streets of old Vienna was a delight! We recommend Prime Tours Vienna!

6 essential vienna experiences.

The City of Dreams is a real delight.

If Vienna isn’t on your must-see European city list, it should be. Austria’s capital city is a sensorial feast on the Danube River. Stunning ancient architecture lines the streets; classical music concerts provide a soundtrack; Habsburg-era palaces lend the city a noble air; and eating well, from simple sausage stalls to top restaurants, is a given.

In fact, Vienna has endless must-see sites and must-try foods, but we’ve narrowed it down to six essential experiences.

The city’s cultural hub.

Get Cultured

As the capital of the Habsburg Empire and, later, the center of European high society during the city’s Golden Age, Vienna is a culture aficionado’s playground. For example, The Vienna Museum Quarter is one of Europe’s most extensive museum complexes, with 60 cultural institutions that offer something for everyone. On the music front, the many famous composers who worked in Vienna, like Mozart and Beethoven, left an enduring legacy. You can find classical music concerts almost every night of the week, but the most beloved venue is the Vienna State Opera House .

After a four-year renovation, the Wien Museum reopened in late 2023 and explores the city’s history. The museum exhibits iconic memorabilia, like a floating 1.5-ton whale sculpture that was once on the roof of a now-shuttered historical restaurant.

If quirky museums are more your beat, don’t miss The Third Man Museum , a treasure trove of artifacts from the 1949 film starring Orson Welles that was shot in Vienna. From snow globes to other globes , Vienna’s collection of wonderfully weird museums is impressive.

Eat Your Vegetables

Meat lovers will feel right at home in Vienna. Relish a käsekrainer , the city’s legendary cheese-filled sausage, at a traditional stand after an opera night. Or, sample Viennese cuisine’s star, the wiener schnitzel — a very thin, breaded and fried veal cutlet — at a traditional bistro (or gauthaus ) like Rebhuhn .

In contrast, Vienna’s recent reputation as Europe’s most vegetarian-friendly city is no rumor. The most recognized vegetarian restaurant is TIAN , where chef Paul Ivić turns plants into art. There are plenty of farm-to-table restaurants where vegetables are the star, such as Meinklang Hofladen . Just outside of the city, Meinklang Hofladen serves a three-course lunch featuring produce harvested from the farm that’s wonderfully paired with the restaurant’s own inventive biodynamic wines.

Try Urban Wine Tasting

Although Vienna might not be Europe’s best-known wine destination, the city does have two unique claims to fame: it’s the only capital in the world to produce substantial quantities of wine within its city limits and it creates its own specialty wine, Gemischter Satz. A blend of up to 20 grape varietals, this white wine made for ages as “pub wine” is having a moment, as are locals’ thirst for natural pours. Plenty of progressive restaurants in Vienna, like MAST , which two sommeliers own, keep Gemischter Satz. Head to a new natural wine bar in the seventh district, R&Bar, to try it and many other exciting Viennese options.

Also unique to the region are heurigers (or wine taverns), where young wines are served with hearty Austrian eats. Within a 15-minute drive from the city center, Der Hirt is a favorite heuriger among locals for its various pours and incredible views. Perched on a steep hillside overlooking vineyards and the Danube River, Der Hirt serves elevated Austrian fare and delightful young wines from local grape varieties. If you visit in September or October, don’t miss sturm, a delicious, slightly fermented, low-alcohol grape juice. During sturm season, this bubbly grape juice is also available in many restaurants and pubs around town.

Go to a Ball

Mingle with local celebrities and foreign dignitaries at one of the 400-plus balls hosted annually from January to March throughout the city during the Viennese Ball Season. This glamorous tradition dates back to the 18th century and allows you to break out your waltzing and dress up in formal wear. (Don’t worry, no Bridgertown -style costumes are needed.)

Even if you can’t score tickets to the Vienna Opera Ball — the event of the season since 1877 — the Philharmonic Ball and the Blumenball are excellent alternatives. If you haven’t three-stepped since elementary music, plenty of dance schools offer speedy waltz lessons before the big event.

Freud’s Waiting Room.

Tour Sigmund Freud’s Home

Recently renovated and expanded, the Sigmund Freud Museum — the home and office of the famous psychotherapist for 47 years — offers insights into Freud’s inner sanctum. (Fun fact: Vienna’s nickname, “The City of Dreams,” honors him.) Highlights of the Sigmund Freud Museum’s interactive tour include the office where he saw patients, video and audio recordings of Freud and hand-written letters to colleagues and family. The museum also dedicates a substantial footprint to Anna Freud, his youngest daughter and renowned psychoanalyst.

In the same Serviten Quarter neighborhood a few blocks over, you can stroll the grounds of the Liechtenstein Garden Palace . Prince Adam of Liechtenstein’s incredible Baroque- and Renaissance-era art collection inside is available to see by appointment only. Also nearby is Vienna’s most Instagrammed staircase, the Strudlhofstiege .

Get Spoiled by Grandma

Vienna’s café culture plays a vital role among locals, so much so that it has been listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2011. Expect to stay awhile, read the paper and even play pool at historic 19th-century-era cafés (they resemble American diners but are elevated in design and offerings) like Cafe Ritter or Cafe Sperl . But a relatively new and hip address to hit the scene is Vollpension . Serving pastries baked by grandmothers (and grandfathers, too) that use family recipes, Vollpension feels like your grandma’s living room, complete with doilies, knickknacks, antique furniture and framed family photos. The café’s greater mission is to facilitate connection between the generations and combat elderly poverty.

Another very trendy spot for walk-up coffee is Fenster Cafe . Don’t miss the Fensterccino, a photogenic cappuccino served in a waffle cone.

Hotel Sacher Wien’s Junior Suite.

Where to Stay

Vienna is easy to get around, either by foot or by complimentary city bike. Still, you may want to book a hotel in the neighborhood you plan to spend the most time in. Located in the city center across the street from the opera house, Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Hotel Sacher Wien delivers palatial vibes with modern comforts . It’s also home to the famous Sacher torte, a layered chocolate cake with apricot jam.

Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Hotel Sans Souci Wien is in the trendy Arts District, across the street from the aforementioned Vienna Museum Quarter, that offers an ideal mix of historical and contemporary design.

Also in the city center, The Amauris is a stylish new boutique hotel whose staff goes above and beyond to make you happy.
