We started at 8:00 Am from Bhubaneswar for Puri. I got to know that Dhauli Shanti Stupa comes on the way to Puri so we took a break over there and enjoyed the beauty of Shanti Stupa architecture. Shanti Stupa, also know as Peace Pagoda is located at Dhauligiri (A place which is known for the end of Great Kalinga War) whose foundation was laid by the great Ashoka. You will feel good vibes over there. It is one of the major attraction in Bhubaneswar city.

Jagannath Temple

We reached in Puri at around 12 and waited in long queue to visit famous Shri Jagannath Puri temple. It is one of the 'four abodes' in India famous for pilgrimage. Lakhs of people from India and all around world comes to see and learn about the rich history of Shri Jagannath Puri Mandir. There is very famous public procession called "Rath Yatra" organised every year and lakhs of people come to witness the event.

Puri-Konark Marine Drive

It was time to kill our hunger and we found a good restaurant near the temple. I don't remember the name of restaurant but their food was delicious. Moving ahead, we proceeded for Konark via Marine Drive at around 2 Pm. Now this journey had been amazing because of the scenic beauty at both side of road. The road has coastal trees on both side such that whole road is covered by shadow of tree and no direct sunlight.As you proceed further, the encounter of sea on one side and coastal forest on the other makes it wonderful to drive. The road are very well built and clean with no pollution. Cool breezes from sea side relaxes you and make you more energetic.

Konark Sun Temple

Moving ahead with the journey, we reached Konark temple. It was time to know about the secrets of Konark temple and its history. This temple is dedicated to Hindu Sun God "Surya". The structures are famous for intricate artwork, iconography and themes including erotic kama and mithun scenes. There are several myths about this place which can be heard from local people which you may find amusing (If you choose believe them).

Chandrabhaga Sea Beach

After exploring Sun temple, it was time to relax on beach. Not to mention, Puri has some of the best beaches in world. One of the beach known as Chandrabhaga Beach is the first Indian beach to receive "Blue Flag" certification. It very neat and clean beach with no commercialization over there. The evening time was perfect to watch sunset, relax ,click some pictures and playing some music. You can enjoy each and every moment at this beach by indulging into deep thoughts . I always like beaches because they are the best place to know more about your inner self. There are other beaches which can be explored over there.

Chandrabhaga Beach

We started our return journey after the sunset and reached Bhubaneswar at 8:30 PM. There is a small cafe "Jugaad Junction" in Bhubaneswar city which has all the interior made from Jugaad. The food served is amazing and at last a cup of tea makes the day wonderful. I never get bored from this place. Finally the trip ended with so many moments to cherish.

A trip from puri to konark

Hi, friends recently i visited Puri with family. i decided to hire a bike for konark trip rather than hiring a car. So booked two bikes from drop you (near hotel sananta). Bikes condition was awesome. One bike was 2017 model and another one of 2016. its worth to travel with bike than a car as you can enjoy the sceneries in road at any spot at your own wish. but i would suggest you if you are with family than dont stop at desolated areas and try to come back to puri before sunset. I would rate drop you 5 out of 5.

1. konark temple and beach.

Constructed in the 13th century, the Black Pagoda or the Konark Sun Temple used to be the 61 m high chariot-shaped temple. Now, mostly in ruins, you can still witness the intricately stone-carved pillars, walls, and wheels. 2. Puri Jagannath Temple and Beach

You can admire the Khondalite stone used to build the temple in the 10th century. Marvel at the 11 m high towering Aruna Stambha, two stone lions guarding the main entrance on the eastern side, the Lion Gate, and the huge inner courtyard with 30 smaller temples. The priests follow the unchanged customs since its inception. 

Puri Beach is an all-time favorite. It is a long stretch of fine golden sand. It is also one of the safest beaches. Explore the lighthouse, take a stroll or buy knick-knacks from the beach stalls. You can even taste crispy fish fries or local street food.

Launched in 2009, Urban Haat is a recently created marketplace housing more than 40 shops under one roof. There are also 2 green rooms, 1 amphitheater, 1 utility building, and 5 exhibition halls.

It is an attempt to revive the rich cultural heritage and centuries-old handicraft industry by displaying its commodities before visitors. It aims to provide general employment opportunities to the local people. Open cultural shows are organized in the evening and fortnightly national textile exhibitions during the annual Ratha Yatra festival.

Bhubaneswar to Konark-Puri Road Trip- A fun Sea-laced Spiritual Quest

Bhubaneswar, Konark and Puri are viewed as a virtual triangle in tourist circles, often referred to as the golden triangle. Thanks to the smooth road connectivity, road trip enthusiasts prefer to take this route, ditching the other modes of transportation. The best part of a road trip is the flexibility it allows, and the scope of exploring other places that fall on the route. The pit stops not only ensure the convenience of extending your trip but also satiate the wanderlust in you, as you can go off-route as per your whims and fancies.

The Route in Question

The route for the road trip from Bhubaneswar to Puri roughly measures 100 kms and as soon as you leave the capital city behind, you will be greeted by a warm carriageway with sprawling green fields over vast expanses on both sides. The 67 km stretch to Puri has very little traffic, and you will hardly find any buildings or shops between the villages. However, you should look out for cattle, careless villagers and occasional bikes, cars, trucks which might drive on the wrong side of the road. The Puri bypass is a single smooth carriageway where you will travel for the remaining 40 kms, crossing the Balukhand-Konark Reserve Forest. Again, these roads are close to perfect and mostly empty, which means that you will have a great time behind the wheels. Your co-travellers too will be in for a delightful experience, since the road barely has any curves; however, if you are driving during monsoons, the forest, although beautiful, might give you a rather eerie feel.

After crossing the forest, you will end up on a road running adjacent to a mesmerising but isolated beach for about 3 kms before you enter the forest again and finally head for the Konark temple. It is advisable to carry your food supplies over this stretch as the eateries on this road are few and far between. If you are keen on a scenic and relaxing drive, this route will leave you more than satisfied.  What’s more, car rental from Bhubaneswar for Puri Konark road trips are easily available and affordable too, especially if you opt for Revv.

i have visited this palace in Jun 15 on my office trip, the architecture of temple is looking good. however there are no god for worship now but for historical palace one should go there.

We visited in Dec-2014. We enlisted help of a registered guide for deeper peek into this wonderful marvel. He thoroughly explained the popular legends, history and architecture of the temple. One particular legend was about how compasses of sailors' ships malfunctioned in 15th century due to a huge magnet laid on top of main temple roof. Same magnet apparently held the underlying iron locking rods in place. Sailors dismantled the magnet and destroyed it so that sailing ships directions remain true. This gradually dislodged locked iron rods from their intended positions and that is how temple stones gradually crumbled. Another legend says that a later generation of priests dug well in the north-east side of temple which was against temple Vastu and thus gods caused the temple to collapse. Archaeology department is however of the view that interlocking iron rods corroded faster due to vicinity to sea and thus stones crumbled. Main temple hall is filled with rocks to prevent temple from collapsing inward. When we visited the temple, a massive restoration work was under progress and most of the main temple was surrounded by scaffolding. Still guide explained the purpose and legend behind many idols. Outer gates of the temple were so designed to let first sun rays fall directly on temple's entrance doors. Sculptures of the temple are very intricately crafted. Each sculpture appears a relic of the past and simultaneously a reminder of how lifestyle in the past was not very different from the current one. The way lower most stones are used for telling stories- one from Mahabharta, then one explaining how temple was constructed and huge stones were hauled- is amazing. Actually each wheel is a working clock and spokes of all the wheels of the chariot have engraved artwork which suggests appropriate activity for that particular time of the day. This review can go on and on and I would have still barely scratched the surface of the awe we experienced during our visit. This temple is absolutely a must go place and I would highly recommend taking a guide along who will make your visit really memorable. (I have deliberately left the description/presence of obscene/offensive sculptures untouched but there really is a ton of information beyond these in the temple)

You already are scorched by the heat and humid climate of the area so the vast lawns and tree laden area of the monument will come as a relief. It has been well maintained and clean. The guides (i have not used) are many and do walk you through the history of the place and its significance. Though you have a top notch camera be sure to get one pic of your clicked (in your cam) by the numerous pro photographers running around. They charge just 5-10 Rs (not sure about this if you are a foreigner).

A monument of great historical importance. this monument was built to pray to the Sun God. It is quite well known for the designs and artwork done on the walls of the temple.People visiting this place also visit the Sea beach Chandrabhaga next to it.

Konark is one temple which requires close monitoring by security guards as tourists are all over the place. Due to the Orissa heat most of the guards can be seen sitting in the shade blowing whistles are tourists who hardly care. Due to the delicate nature of the Temple tourists should be careful not to cause further damage by climbing on almost everything. The repair work being undertaken and the missing stones do spoil the beauty. Would like to visit again to savour the beauty to the fullest. Noticed a scam involving parking attendants and police, One can park opposite the temple for a premium which makes the police turn a blind eye.

This world famous temple is one of prime places to visit in Puri. The temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu and is one of the major Hindu Temples in India. At a distance of 1 km from Jagannath Temple and 2.5 km from Puri Junction, Narendra Tank or Narendra Pokhari is a holy tank situated at Mauza Dandimala Sahi in Puri. This is one of the largest tanks in Orissa and also one of the must visit places in Puri. The tank was built in 15th century AD by Narendra Dev, who shouldered the responsibility of the kingdom with Purushottama. The tank is spread over a vast area, which features an island in the middle, housing a small temple called Chandana Mandapa which is connected to the southern bank with a bridge. At a distance of 10 km from Konark, Ramachandi Temple is an ancient temple situated on the banks of Kushabhadra River near Konark in Odisha state. Situated on the Marine Drive Road from Konark to Puri, it is one of the popular places of pilgrimage in Odisha. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ramachandi, believed to be the main deity of Konark. The temple is even older than the Sun Temple and is one of the most important Sakti Peethas of Orissa. According to legend, Kalapahad, the rebel Hindu Brahmin youth who got converted to Islam, vowed to destroy all the temples of Hindu worship during 17th century. He approached to destroy Ramachandi Temple after destroying Sun Temple. To safeguard the temple, Goddess Ramachandi dressed as a maid and asked Kalapahad to wait at the door till she brings water from the river for the Goddess. 2 Konark Sun Temple

At a distance of 1.5 km from Konark Bus Station, Konark Sun Temple is an ancient Hindu temple situated in the heart of Konark town in Orissa state. Renowned all over the world for its architecture, Konark Sun Temple is among the prime places to visit in Konark and is often used in promoting Konark Tourism. Dedicated to Sun God, Konark Sun Temple was built by King Narasimhadeva I of Eastern Ganga dynasty in the 13th century CE to commemorate his victory over Muslims invaders. European sailors used this temple tower for navigation, but dubbed it the Black Pagoda for the frequent shipwrecks that occurred along the coast. This temple is one of the grandest temples of India and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Konark was sacked by the Muslim Yavana army in the 15th century. At a distance of 1.5 km from Konark Bus Station, Konark Museum is one of the ancient museums located in the historical town of Konark in Odisha. Situated near the Sun Temple, it is maintained by Archaeological Survey of India and is one of the prominent places to visit in Konark. The Konark Museum was started in the year 1968 with the purpose of housing the archeological excavations and the fallen sculptures from the Sun Temple. Not long after your departure from the historic Santa Paula Depot, we’ll come to the family-owned and operated Prancer’s Farm.

We’ll stop here to explore and stock up on provisions. Prancer’s Farm carries a wide assortment of seasonal local produce (including the incredible citrus you’ll be passing through on your journey). They also have packaged snacks, beverages, and small gifts.

The fun doesn’t stop there, though! Meet goats, llamas, horses, and more at their petting zoo, situated on the 40-acre farm.

Our ride has changed to a 10-mile, 2-hour roundtrip journey, with a newly-reimagined stopover at Prancer’s Farm, and a unique turnaround location amidst the citrus groves, as we move toward the repair of the Sespe Creek Bridge and a longer journey to Fillmore near the end of 2024.

History of the Line

Our track was constructed in 1887 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, and was a part of the main line running between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Over the years millions of riders have experienced the beauty of the Santa Clara River Valley, Hollywood has used this span of rail as a scenic backdrop, and generations have fallen in love with trains.

The track was used extensively by Southern Pacific as late as the 1950s to haul citrus from packing houses at the communities along the Santa Clara River.

Today the Sunburst brings back the romance to this storied line, and takes us into a new millennium with the introduction of our unique Railbikes.

Free street parking is available on both the north and south sides of the Depot (E. Santa Barbara and Railroad Avenues). There is also a large gravel lot for RVs on the northeast corner of 10 th and Railroad, kitty-corner to the depot.

Pedaling Through California’s Redwoods on Railbikes (2024)

Just when I thought the Wine Train was the coolest way to ride the rails in Northern California, along come Railbikes, a new excursion from Skunk Train of Mendocino. And unlike the Wine Train, you don’t have to be over 21 to enjoy it!

Pedal Through the Redwoods

California’s majestic redwood forests are as beautiful as they are famous, and checking them out is one of the most interesting and fun things to do in Mendocino County ! Railbikes are an amazing way to take in these legendary redwoods.

Railbikes are two-person, pedal-powered vehicles that sit securely on the train tracks. Riding them will take you along scenic Pudding Creek, cross over majestic wooden trestle bridges, and journey into the heart of the redwood forest.

Departing from the Skunk Train Depot in Fort Bragg – about three hours north of San Francisco on the Pacific coast, this railbike excursion will take you on a one-hour round trip ride through a redwood forest along the Pudding Creek Estuary, and to a turnaround at the historic Glen Blair Junction.

A Historic Railway Route

The Skunk Train is a heritage railroad that has been operating on the north coast since 1885.

The views on this scenic stretch of track are nearly the same as they would have been more than a century ago! This is the result of visionary forest stewardship and a dedication to the natural wonder of the redwoods. Some of the trees along this route are more than 1,000 years old and reach more than 300 feet tall.

The nickname Skunk – by the way – originated in 1925 when motorcars were introduced. These single unit self-propelled motorcars had gasoline powered engines for power and pot-bellied stoves (burning crude oil to keep the passengers warm). The combination of the fumes created a very pungent odor. Old timers living along the line said these motorcars were like skunks, “You could smell them before you could see them.”

Railbikes Offer a Fun New Way to Travel the Rails

Railbikes provide the newest way to experience the Skunk Train’s Redwood Route. The railbikes sit securely on the track, allowing passengers to make their journey in a peaceful and quiet atmosphere unlike anything else found on a railway.

Railbike riders depart in a small group, with a trained guide leading the way along the track. Since the track is owned and operated exclusively by the Skunk Train, they guarantee no trains or other traffic along the route. It is 100% safe from trains!

The bikes even come with an electric assist – ideal for taking a relaxing breather while still moving along the track, or for a little bit of extra oomph while you make your way up the gentle grade on the return trip.

The seven-mile trip isn’t too tiring, so the electric motor probably won’t be necessary for most people unless you have young kids – but it can certainly provide a nice break along the way.

A guide is there to help out should anything come up, but these bikes are incredibly easy to ride – perfect for all ages and skill levels.

The Pudding Creek Estuary

The Skunk Train rail line follows the Pudding Creek Estuary for many miles from the mouth of the river in Fort Bragg inland through the redwoods. The trip is beautifully scenic, with a large waterway that still features old wooden pilings from long-forgotten trestle bridges.

A bounty of wildlife calls the estuary home as well, and these railbikes are quiet enough that you’ll likely see many animals, including blue herons, osprey, egrets, deer and river otters.

Glen Blair Junction

The end of the line is Glen Blair Junction, 3.5 miles along the Redwood Route. This historic site has been transformed into a wonderful stop, with picnic tables and miles of easy-to-hike trails into the redwoods. It’s here that the railbikes are lifted off the tracks and turned around for the return journey.

Fun for the Whole Family

Railbikes are truly a great excursion for families. The two-person bike makes it easy for an adult to travel with a younger child, and the electric assist means even young kids will be able to make their way up the gentle slope of the line.

Larger families can rent multiple rail bikes and travel as a group, remaining near each other while still being able to move at their own pace.

Although the historic Skunk Train remains an incredible way to experience the redwoods, this activity offers a truly unique and magical way to explore. Railbikes are an awesome excursion for families who want to do something healthy and active on their vacation.

This new excursion will take you 25 miles far off the beaten path along the meandering Noyo River and deep into old-growth redwood groves, on a section of track now reserved exclusively for railbikes.

This is a strenuous excursion for adults only, and lasts for approximately four hours. A picnic is included. The rate for the Railbikes on the Noyo adventure is $495 per bike (for two people) and includes an 8% Historic Preservation Assessment. As with the regular excursion, there is no discount for single riders.

No, it can be very dangerous for a dog on your lap. Saw a TikTok video where a dog’s tail got caught somehow and severely injured (Iowa tracks). Please rent the pat cart or leave your doggo at home for this particular adventure.
