Chateau puynormond 2004.
This wine is from the Montagne Saint-Emilion appellation in Bordeaux, and consists of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. And it’s cheap. Here goes.

Retasting tonight. Metallic note, along with strange astringency on the back palate, are still there, but otherwise this is drinking well. The fruit character shows a touch of black olive that I didn’t note initially. Somehow, I am craving moussaka.

Montagne Saint Emilion
Philippe Lamarque Perched majestically on the top of an amphitheatre shaped escarpment, overlooking their own vines at the front, with a wonderful view of Saint-Emilion in the distance, Château Puynormond epitomizes vigour, youth, passion and patience through the accumulated experience of four generations. I met the current owner, Philippe Lamarque, during my wine studies, as we were at the same wine school. After a few weeks, Philippe invited some of his classmates to visit the vineyard, which belonged to his parents then, in the beautiful village of Montagne Saint-Emilion (north east of Saint-Emilion). I still remember vividly the warm welcome of his parents and how easy their wine was to drink. So easy to drink that I forget the number of bottles and different vintages that his father gave us to taste that day.
The vineyard is 12 hectares large (about 30 acres) and the majority of the vines are situated on a south facing hill-side. The quality of the wine is improved by carrying out a green harvest before the remainder of the grapes are harvested manually. The vines produce about 45 hectolitres per hectare for the “Vieilles Vignes” wine and 55 for the normal wine.

Situated in the commune of Montagne, between prestigious neighbors Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, Chateau Puynormond overlooks an amphitheater of vines from a clay terrior. The wine is 90% Merlot with Cabernet Franc making up the remainder.
