Our group of ten bicyclists and e-bicyclists, whose training ranged from 0 miles a week in training to 300 miles a week, just had the absolute best 6-day trip all over the Big Island with Alex and the crew from Big Island Cycles. I began planning the trip with Alex via emails and phone calls six months prior to our trip. From the start, he was eager to provide all of our riders, with their various abilities, the best possible experience, and he did exactly that. Alex and expert mechanic/good man/amazing life Scott got us perfectly fitted to his bikes and e-bikes, and we were off. Alex was not just our fearless leader, he quickly got to know each of us, managed to fit in and became one of our group members. If you knew us, you might wonder if becoming one of our group is a good thing, but we all think it's great! Each one of us in our group appreciated Alex and what he brought to our group. We toured Hawi, the Vanilla Factory, Two-Step, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and so much more. Our group of friends has been touring together for ten years, and we all agree, nothing beats the experience that Alex and Big Island Bike Tours provided for us on the Big Island. Thank you to Alex, Scott, Mike, and all of the crew at Big Island Bike Tours who made our trip so special. Aloha!

I found this company, because I was having difficulty finding mountain biking trails on the big island. As it turns out, since so much of the land is privately owned it's difficult to find anything unless you have a way in. And here is where Big Island Bike Tours comes in. I looked into doing a guided our of the island and this company was one of the few in the area. It was really easy to book a trip. I chose the MTB trip on Anna Ranch, near Waimea. It was close and would be easy to get to for me. The morning I showed up I was greeted by Range and Silvia. Alex, the owner of the company, showed up later. Everyone there was very friendly and welcoming. They provided a full suspension mountain bike, made by Giant. It was a good bike and there was nothing wrong with it. Alex made sure to ask me about my pedals and whether I wanted SPD clipless. Since I left them at home I just chose the platforms. Big Island Bike Tours provided everything as promised on their website. So Anna Ranch is a privately owned piece of land that Alex has retained access to. In doing so he has built a trail system going from the office/base camp to the edge of the ranch property. The trail system is new so the dirt wasn't packed, but given some time and weather it'll be a great trail. Alot of it is single track and technical, not a big deal. He has built embankments in the turns of the trail, so when coming down you can take it quickly. It wasn't a difficult ride nor was it too physically taxing. Where the trail ends, there is a great view of the island. My guide Silvia was fantastic. She was relatively new to the island, but has learned quite a bit and shared it with me. She is a strong rider and kept track of me as I was proceeding up the hill. When we stopped for breaks she made sure to check if I needed any snacks or water. Also during the breaks she took a little hike down to the water falls and pools, which was really neat to see. She also shared some of her personal mountain biking experiences on the island, which sound like alot of fun. I'd like to try one of those someday. Definitely a fun ride onto the mountain. I will sign up again for another ride on my next trip back to the Big Island.

Great mountain bike ride! We had a great time with Jeremy and he was super helpful getting the group up the hill and shared good details about the ranch and the local area. Not a super hard technical ride, but a great adventure that everyone can enjoy. Really recommend the place.

Photo of Peymon M.

So fun, highest quality bikes, and Jeremy was generous with his knowledge and help. He helped my pregnant wife when she was a little unsure of her bike skills. Super fun and highly recommend.

Our Guide Jeremey was awesome. Great job showing us up the mountain and back down .Thanks for all the island tips. Course was great. Best for moderate to advanced mountain bike riders. Was a blast and again Jermey was the man.

I've called at least 5 times over two weeks. Alex never answers the phone. I've emailed and texted, no response. I guess they don't want my money. I can't book my tour online either, it says to call. It's really disappointing, because there are not a lot of bike tour companies.

My husband booked the Anna's Ranch tour for us along with our two teenage sons. My husband is an avid mtb, I have a little experience and our boys ride their cruisers to the beach at home. We were unsure of our ability to make the climb and Alex suggested we enjoy the ride and go with the ebikes. It was the perfect call and we had such a great time. We were so fortunate to have Alex be our guide; he is super chill, easy to talk to and informative on both the local area/history and mtb instruction. I'm glad I didn't know he is a former pro cyclist beforehand because I would've been intimidated, but he really paced the climb perfectly and not once did we feel rushed. He raced up the hill to take pictures and videos of us which are included in the price. He carries all the water and snacks as well! Anna's Ranch provides amazing views and a beautiful waterfall hike. We loved everything about it and wish every success to Alex. We will definitely be back and next time, no ebikes!

This was an amazing day. The ride up, and then back down Moana Loa Observatory Road was a lifetime experience. Alex set us up with top notch equipment and rode along to guide us up the mountain. Range drove the support vehicle, shuttling us to Observatory Road and following us for support on the ride. The road is single lane with very little traffic so it functions like a bike path through almost unique landscape on the planet. The ride up is hard, but rewarding, the ride down is a real thrill! Don't forget your sunscreen, the sun is intense up there. I'm really pleased with the adventure the guys at Big Island Bike Tours made possible for us.

Rented an Open gravel bike from Alex yesterday to ride Mana Road. First off the experience was top shelf and Alex and his team are first rate. Communication good with Alex before ride, including me having to change the date of my ride. Arrived and Alex was setting up my bike. Put my pedals on, and even changed out the stem so it would fit me better. Gave me great info about where to ride. Really stellar personalized service if you ask me. They even dressed and wrapped my arm after I crashed and was bleeding everywhere. And the Open gravel bike was a great ride too. I will definitely rent from Big Island Bike Tours next time I'm on the island. Mahalo!

I just got back from the past week with Alex and Big Island Bike Tours. I had an absolute blast. I've been traveling for the past 3 months doing all sorts of cool adventures, and I have to say that this was my favorite activity. First and foremost, Alex is an ex-pro cyclist who knows all about cycling. He has top notch equipment for all ability levels and you will leave a better cyclist afterwards. I was planning on coming to the big island to drive around and check things out, but I decided to jump on this tour instead. So glad that I made that decision. Alex knows Big Island inside and out from both a biking and tourism perspective. He knows where the good roads to ride (without cars, good shoulder, good routes), knows where the tourist hot spots are outside of where you would normally find from any tourist guidebook, and does a wonderful job putting them all into a week long adventure. I left the trip not only loving Big Island more than I could ever find out on my own, but also more of a fan of cycling than I could have imagined.

My wife, son, and his girlfriend went on a 20 mile ride from Waimea to the Waipio Valley Lookout. Jeremy and Dan led the tour. It was a great ride. And Jeremy and Dan were great. 1). The route was on pavement and largely, but not all, downhill. The roads all had very little traffic. And the scenery was great. 2). Jeremy, who led the ride would stop every few miles to allow everyone to catch up and to provide some description of the area. Dan drove the sag-wagon. 3). The support was also great. My son had a puncture flat. Dan changed the tire and my son was back on his way within 5 minutes. 4). The bikes provided were great. My wife and his girlfriend rode hybrids. My son and I rode Bianchi rode bikes. It was a bit difficult to arrange the tour - they have limited staff now due to COVID. But, they do get back to you, and are quite good at explaining the route and options. These backroads are in my view one of the best places in the US for road biking. (I have previously ridden the Tiburon Paradise loop https://bayarearides.com/rides/tiburonloop/ and large sections of Adventure Cycling TransAmerica Trail in SW Virginia)

My son likes to ride MTB so we decided to try it as it had good reviews and we were not disappointed!! Beautiful scenery and great talk and insight about the big island from our guide Jeremy. Jeremy has a cool chill vibe and was great guide taking us up and down the MTB trail that they built on Anna Ranch. With the eBike, climbing steep hills were not a big problem and Jeremy was totally cool with the pace of the ride. I highly recommend Jeremy and the tour! There seems to be good choice of rides available based on one's fitness level. Two thumbs up!!

Big Island Bike Tour went above and beyond with me and my daughter. Jeremy was an excellent guide. Bikes were ready to go when we arrived. This was my daughters first experience on a e-mountain bike. She loved it. We rode through a horse farm with horses and seen beautiful back country. The weather was perfect. Slightly windy at first but the breeze felt good. The clouds came over a couple times and we got a slight drizzle. Jeremy provided some history of the ranches and island. Very informative. Highly recommend this for anyone interested in biking while on the Big Island.

6/13/2023 We had booked the Mana Road Tour. Our guide, Jeremy, was very patient and took the extra time to make sure we were comfortable with the bikes since we were amateur riders. Since it was just our family on the tour, Jeremy changed the bike route for us and showed us the amazing area of Waimea. He also shared some history and great stories about the land. We would definitely recommend this tour for travelers seeking an memorable experience.

Went on Mana Road e-bike tour and it was great. Our guid Jeremy was the best; super informative, easy to talk to, and was very accommodating for all skill levels and speed. E-bikes make this ride accessible to lots of skill levels. Definitely recommend if you want a day away from the beach or want to do something unique.

We have been visiting the Big Island every year since 2016 (well, with the exception of 2020) and I don't know why we have never booked a tour with Big Island Bike Tours. I'm glad we finally did! My husband is an experienced mountain biker, our 14 year old son isn't but is willing to try anything and I'm more of the cautious one. Given all our different experience levels, Big Island Tours was able to find a trail that would best suit all of us using e-bikes. I'm a petite 4'10 so my concern was the size of the bike. I am most comfortable on a kid bike but they assured me the XS small e-bike would work. Getting off is always a bit scary. With some practice in their parking lot and lots of tips from Dan I felt confident. "Lean and step!" We first booked the Anna tour but since I'm a novice, Lauran suggested the Mana Dirt E-bike tour. It was perfect! Gorgeous views, quiet and since our family was the only one on the tour, we were able to go as fast or as slow and take breaks as we saw fit. Dan was such a great tour guide, easy going and fun to talk to. It honestly felt like he was just part of our family going on a bike ride. Maybe we'll start calling him cousin Dan! We went about 16 miles roundtrip. That last uphill climb was not a problem for my husband or our son. We're a pretty active family but that hill did challenge me. Thank goodness for e-bikes!! The trip downhill was a fun adrenaline rush for sure! If you're not an experienced cyclist or mountain biker or even if you are, they will help find a trail that best suits you. It's a great way to see parts of the island, take it in and really appreciate the aina (land). Mahlo nui! Maybe we'll see you next year cousin Dan and I'll think about that Anna Ranch tour.

We did the Anna Ranch e-MTB ride and it was great! It was a nice out and back with some fun switch backs, side trip to a waterfall, and incredible scenery. Dan, our guide, was awesome! He was great to spend time with and made an exception with the departure time to fit our schedule. He was also very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna. Since visiting Waimea years ago, I wanted to explore the surrounding hills and the Anna Ranch ride was a perfect way to do it. It did not disappoint! Riding e-bikes was pretty rad too - we were on vacation.

big island bike tours and rentals waimea reviews

Dan was the best guide we had on the big island! He was super helpful getting us set up with our e-bikes and offering tidbits about the island. He was just super friendly and a fun guy to do a tour with. The Anna Ranch bike ride itself isn't long if you are an experienced mountain biker like my wife and I are but it is 100% worth it. I say this because I find that area of Waimea to be particularly beautiful - rolling green hills, ocean scenery, a waterfall, and wildflowers following the path going up the mountain like magic. The single track itself is actually really pleasant and can be challenging depending on what level your e-bike is set to. If you are experienced I recommend just holding back a bit for other people to move ahead then go at your own pace - this worked perfectly for me going down hill. BTW Waimea is equidistant ~30 min drive to Spencer Beach and Waipio Valley. Between these three locations you will see: classic low-key not crowded beach with calm water (spencer beach), magical rolling green hills with cooling winds and a great little town (waimea), and a breathtaking cliff valley that feels as sacred as its history (waipio valley). The variety of landscapes from west to east in those three locations should be enough to plan an entire week to be honest. Therefore I'd recommend staying in Waimea if you want a home base and are concerned about sleeping at night with the heat.

Headquartered in Waimea on the Big Island, Big Island Bike Tours is an outstanding bike tour and bike rental outfit that's led by a retired professional cyclist. This is the outfitter you want to go to for exceptional tours around the island and the high-end rental bikes and e-bikes.

There are many ways to explore and experience a new place, but there’s nothing quite like biking. Compared to cars, bicycles force you to slow down and become more open to the natural and human-created world around you. Compared to walking, bicycles can take you further, making it easy to explore more places and from a different angle. This is a way of exploring that everyone should try at least once, and if you’re visiting Hawaii, one great outfit to try cycle adventures with is Big Island Bike Tours.

Part of what makes Big Island Bike Tours unique and sets it apart from competitors is because of its owner, Alex “Cando “Candelario. Cando was not just a professional cyclist, he spent fourteen years competitively racing; seven of which with the top national team of Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies. Cando rode and competed in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia as well as the United States. He lived and breathed cycling and when it was time to hang up the cleats, he did so to share his passion for the sport and activity with others by opening up Big Island Bike Tours.

When you rent a bike via Big Island Bike Tours, you can rest assured you are renting one of the highest-quality of make bikes; one that is in top maintenance condition. When you book a guided tour via Big Island Bike Tours, you can rest assured you will be led by an experienced cyclist well-equipped to handle any issues along the way. You can have these assurances because it is a well-versed cyclist hiring, purchasing, and forming the training protocols for the company.

Located in Waimea in North Hawaii, Big Island Bike Tours offers a great array of adventures. For both their rentals and tours, they offer bicycle pick-ups and drop-offs that can be especially helpful for those looking to bike near their resort and who don’t want to rent a car or take a cab.

Popular biking tours offered by Big Island Bike Tours include:

Waipo Valley Lookout Road Bike Tour This is a fantastic bicycle tour for those more familiar with road biking and looking to undertake a longer, more spirited bike adventure. This ride starts at the company’s Waimea headquarters where bikes are fitted to each rider’s specific needs. Then it’s down through the hills along back roads, enjoying some incredible vistas. There is a quick break in the small town of Honokaa before a final 12-mile stretch to the coastline and the Valley of the Kings.

Mana Dirt E-Mountain Bike Tour This tour features what is called electric-assist bikes that will require you to peddle, but the electric motor equipped in each bike will handle most of the torque and energy required to propel the bike forward. The result is easier, more enjoyable peddling for newcomers to the sport, especially in hilly and otherwise uneven terrain. So guests on this tour get to enjoy a fast, easy bike ride and do so along with the famous red clay Mana Road that winds along the lower slopes of the tallest mountain on earth, Mauna Kea.

In the end, what makes Big Island Bike Tours such a great outfit is that they have a sufficient array of tours and bike types to excite every guest. Whether you haven’t biked for decades or you are a proficient road or mountain cyclist, this outfitter is equipped to deliver a dream biking adventure on the Big Island.

Insider Tip: Rain is something to be expected in Hawaii, especially during the winter and spring, and there is rarely a time when it gets too rainy for Big Island Bike Tours to cancel. If biking through wind gusts and rainstorms doesn’t sound fun for you, aim to book in summer or fall which generally boasts better weather, or don’t book until a few days before your anticipated trip to reduce the risk of undesirable weather.

Top Bike Rentals on Big Island: Hilo, Kona & Waimea Shops

Exploring the Big Island of Hawaii on two wheels is an adventure I’ll always recommend. The island’s diverse landscapes, from volcanic deserts to lush rainforests, make for unforgettable biking experiences. Finding the right bike rental shop is crucial, and I’ve got the scoop on the best spots to gear up for your ride.

Hot Spots Hawaii Featured Image

I’ve pedaled my way across the Big Island and discovered the top bike rental shops that stand out for their quality, service, and selection. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ride along the coast or a challenging trek up Mauna Kea, these shops will set you up with the perfect bike.

Importance of Choosing a Good Bike Rental Shop

When planning a cycling adventure on the Big Island, the importance of selecting a top-notch bike rental shop can’t be overstated. The right shop can be the difference between a memorable ride and one plagued by discomfort or mechanical issues. Safety is a primary concern; reputable shops ensure all bikes are well-maintained and meet safety standards. I’ve learned that well-maintained bikes minimize the risk of accidents due to equipment failure.

Another key factor is the variety of bikes available . The Big Island’s varied terrain calls for different types of bikes. You’ll need a sturdy mountain bike for exploring Mauna Kea, while a road bike is better suited for cruising along the coast. The best rental shops offer a wide selection to match personal preference and the planned route.

Customer service excellence is another hallmark of a good bike rental shop. Knowledgeable staff not only help you choose the right bike but also equip you with valuable tips on local routes. They provide insights on weather conditions and terrain specifics, which are invaluable when you’re unfamiliar with the island. Excellent customer service includes offering helmets and additional safety gear, as well as providing a detailed map of biking trails.

Lastly, flexible rental terms are a must. Whether I need a bike for a half-day outing or a week-long trek, the rental shop should accommodate my schedule. I look for shops that offer hassle-free pickup and return policies, and that are willing to go the extra mile to ensure my convenience.

When choosing a bike rental shop on the Big Island, I consider these factors to guarantee an optimal cycling experience. The quality of the bike, the variety available, customer service, and flexibility of rental terms are non-negotiables for a successful biking adventure.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Bike Rental Shop

When searching for the perfect bike rental shop on the Big Island, a few key considerations stand out. Safety should be your paramount concern ; after all, you’re entrusting your well-being to the bike you rent. I always look for shops that perform regular maintenance on their fleets and provide safety gear like helmets and pads. Certified staff should be ready to match you with the right bike and ensure it’s properly adjusted to your size.

The variety of bikes available is also a significant factor. The Big Island’s terrain varies from coastal roads to volcanic landscapes, demanding different types of bikes. Shops that offer road bikes, mountain bikes, and cruisers give you the option to choose the best bike for your adventure. I find the flexibility to switch between bike types during my rental period is incredibly handy, especially when I decide to tackle a different trail than originally planned.

Customer service excellence can make or break my rental experience. I recommend rental shops that boast an attentive and knowledgeable staff, capable of offering detailed route suggestions, and quick to resolve any issues that might arise. Shops that go the extra mile, such as providing roadside assistance or drop-off and pick-up services, score high on my list. Look for shops with stellar reviews for their service and pay attention to customer experiences highlighted online.

Lastly, consider the flexibility of rental terms . Vacation plans can change, and weather conditions on the Big Island can be unpredictable. Shops with straightforward cancellation policies and the ability to accommodate last-minute changes will provide peace of mind. Before making a decision, review their rental agreements to avoid any hidden fees or inflexible conditions that could sour your cycling experience.

In my quest for the best bike rental on the Big Island, these factors have been indispensable in guiding my selection. Depending on your riding preference and the nature of your trip, giving priority to these points could greatly enhance your cycling adventure.
