The country’s more than 1,000 scenic fjords, idyllic mountains, and imposing glaciers are among the many awe-inspiring landscapes you will see on a cruise in Norway . Add sightings of the aurora borealis in the dark winter months, cultural attractions in the cities and towns along the way, plus abundant adventure-filled outings, such as kayaking, mountain biking, dog-sledding, and cross-country skiing, and it’s clear why Norway is such a sought-after cruise destination.

Years ago, on a cruise in Norway, I met a fellow passenger who complained about the sheer number of fjords, saying that he would have preferred more variety of landscape. To me, as a frequent cruiser, these striking vistas are a must-see experience on the world map. Sailing into Trollfjord in the Lofoten Islands, you might even imagine that you see those elusive and fanciful trolls as your ship glides along shimmering water through the 328-foot opening of a passage flanked by towering cliffs.

Most Norway sailings operate between May and September, with the height of the season running from June through August. That said, you can cruise Norway year-round.

It’s worth noting that in 2018, the Norwegian Parliament adopted a resolution that will limit access to only those ships able to sail emissions-free in the UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord in western Norway; it will go into effect by 2026. While it’s not yet totally clear how exactly the regulation will play out, this could potentially impact which ships sail to Geiranger and Flam in the near future.

What you’ll see on a Norway cruise

Nature and culture are the star attractions on cruises exploring the western coast of Norway. Passengers will have dramatic views as they glide into fjords dotted with scenic mountain-backed villages and colorful homes.

Note that most Norway cruises do not visit the capital city of Oslo, so if that’s on your wish list you’ll want to select your itinerary carefully.

As for other itinerary highlights, the historic Hanseatic city of Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, is a must for history lovers, home to the old wharf area of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its dozens of 14th- to 16th-century wooden houses. Bergen also has a bustling fish market and some of the best arts attractions in the country, including the home of composer Edvard Grieg.

If your cruise goes above the Arctic Circle , you’ll be able to see the Northern Lights Cathedral in Tromso, which claims status as a Northern Lights capital based on its position on the so-called aurora oval, improving your chances of seeing the aurora borealis there. Less-visited Alta, also on the aurora oval, has such winter attractions as Northern Lights viewing while spending the night in a teepee at a Sami dogsledding camp—an experience offered by some cruise lines. In North Cape, you can stand at the northernmost edge of the European continent.

Geiranger, at the head of the UNESCO-recognized Geirangerfjord, stuns with waterfalls that include the 1,000-foot Seven Sisters. From Stavanger, visit Pulpit Rock for more cliff and waterfall drama or stay in town and visit the fascinating sardine canning museum, wood houses, and shops in the old town.

Flam has the star attraction of the UNESCO World Heritage Nærøyfjord, viewable on a one-hour steep ascent on the antique trains of the Flam Railway. Aesund is a pretty fishing village known for art nouveau architecture, while Olden boasts access to glaciers and glacial-fed waterfalls and lakes. Viking history is a draw in Trondheim, founded in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason and known today for its culinary scene.

Since some stops are for less than an hour, a key is to also book optional shore excursions, which leave the ship and reboard further down the line.

7 Best Cruise Journeys in Norway

With the second-longest coastline in the world, Norway boasts thousands of miles of dramatic fjords and unforgettable coastal landscapes. That means that there’s an incredible amount to see, and no better way to enjoy it than on a Norwegian cruise trip .

On one of the best Norway cruises, witness the majesty of the fjords and the delights of the country’s Viking culture. Set sail in the rejuvenating light of the summer’s midnight sun. Or in winter, you could be lucky enough to glimpse the ethereal beauty of the northern lights along the way.

Here, we share 7 locations for the best cruises in Norway and give you some tips for what to consider when planning your trip.

Gudvangen - Best Norway Cruises

1. Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord

One of the most rewarding itineraries for a Norway cruise takes in the awesome geography of the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even in a country where a natural wonder is around almost every corner, this is simply an experience not to be missed.

Together, these fjords make up the wildest and most beautiful section of the Sognefjord , the “King of the Fjords”. This is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway.

The most popular way to visit the fjord is on the passenger ferry that runs year-round from the Viking village of Gudvangen to Aurland and on to Flåm . Expect a vibrant green backdrop in summer, and dustings of snow atop the surrounding peaks in winter.

From the village of Flåm, a historic destination nestled among steep mountainsides and roaring waterfalls, you can ride on the Flåm Railway . It’s known as the most beautiful train journey in the world for good reason.

  • Experience this unmissable journey with a classic Norway in a Nutshell® tour package

Lysefjord - Best Norway Cruises

2. Lysefjord

With a name that translates as “Light Fjord”, for the pale colour of its granite rock, Lysefjord is a geological marvel. Here, Norway really shows off its natural drama, with mountains that fall 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) vertically into the water.

You can cruise into Lysefjord from Stavanger , one of Norway’s oldest Viking cities and now a bustling cultural hub.

In 3 hours, a cruise line will transport you from the city’s charming port deep into this spectacular fjord. Along the way, you can explore Fantahålå (“Vagabond’s Cave”) and the 400-metre (1,312-foot) Hengjanefossen waterfall.

This a cruise that cries out for some time on-land too. From here, options for shore excursions include the climb up to the awe-inspiring Pulpit Rock , a flat-topped formation that hangs over the fjord. It offers one of the best views in all of Norway.

  • Related: Hiking the Pulpit Rock in Norway

Geirangerfjord - Best Norway Cruises

3. Geirangerfjord

Alongside the Sognefjord, Geirangerfjord is one of the fjords Norway is most famous for. Framed by some of Norway’s highest mountain peaks, a journey into Geirangerfjord deserves its title as one of the most beautiful cruises in the world.

Don’t miss this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s most graceful waterfalls. The Seven Sisters , myriad streams of water falling from 250 metres (820 feet) up, is one of the most impressive. The Bridal Veil, which resembles a wedding veil draped across the mountains, is another breathtaking spectacle.

Yet there’s plenty more to see. If you choose to step off the boat, you can take a bus up the Ørnevegen , the “Eagle Road”, to a renowned viewpoint above the fjords. Or, if you prefer a walk, visit the ancient Viking farms that dot the forests alongside the shore.

It’s easiest – and most rewarding – to visit the fjord by cruising in from Ålesund , Norway’s art nouveau city. Alternatively, take the shorter hour-long trip from Geiranger to Hellesylt.

Trondheim houses - Best Norway Cruises

4. Trondheim to Kristiansund

Sat on the shores of the Trondheim Fjord is Norway’s former capital and the so-called “Capital of the Vikings”: Trondheim . Known for its imposing Nidaros Cathedral and the trendy district of Bakklandet , it’s also a favourite departure point for coastal cruises in Norway’s north.

One of the most remarkable options is to take a cruise west from Trondheim to Kristiansund , a city spread across 4 serene islands. It’s a glorious voyage along the Norwegian coast that navigates the tight sounds between western Norway’s idyllic islands.

The harbour city of Kristiansund is a great place to try the Norwegian delicacy, klippfisk, which is dried and salted cod. Or take a wildlife tour and hop across the islands in search of the elusive sea eagle.

Hurtigruten and Havila are Norwegian cruise lines that journey from Bergen as far north as Kirkenes. They're some of the best options if you want to explore Norway's coast. The Lonely Planet once called route “the world’s most beautiful voyage”. Find out why for yourself.

  • Check out your options for a Hurtigruten coastal cruise tour in Norway

Northern lights over Tromso - Best Norway Cruises

5. The far north: Tromsø to Kirkenes

In summer, bask in the perpetual light of the midnight sun. Or in winter, seize the chance to see our planet’s most enchanting phenomenon: the northern lights . Whatever the season, the far north of Norway offers a cruise you’ll remember forever.

Typically, a Northern Norway cruise will start from Tromsø , the capital of the north. Before you board your cruise ship, spend time exploring this exciting and surprising Arctic city. Then depart in the evening for your northern adventure to Kirkenes .

In all seasons, it’s a popular option to spend the night aboard ship. In winter, your journey along these fjord-torn coasts may offer you a glimpse of the aurora borealis. Or, if there’s light outside, witness the remote beauty of North Cape (“Nordkapp”), mainland Europe’s most northerly point.

Of course, you can enjoy unforgettable experiences off the boat too. Dog sledding? Check. A stay in the Kirkenes Snowhotel ? You bet.

  • Chase the northern lights on these  Norwegian winter tours
  • Or explore your options for a summer trip to Norway

Bryggen in Bergen - Best Norway Cruises

6. Bergen to Molde

Norway’s western city of Bergen is known as the “ Gateway to Norway’s Fjords ” – and you won’t need to guess why. With Hardangerfjord to the south and the entrance to Sognefjord not far north, this ancient city is the perfect base for the best Norway cruises.

A great option if you’re hoping to explore Norway’s west coast is a voyage north from Bergen to Molde .

Boarding in the evening, there’s time to visit Bryggen , Bergen’s UNESCO-protected historic wharf, during the day. You’ll wave goodbye to the city and enjoy a night aboard ship. Then wake up for an adventure-packed day just as you pass the charming city of Ålesund.

The highlight of the journey is the Hjørundfjord. This most tranquil of fjords cuts between the Sunnmøre Alps, mountains that leap 1,500 metres (4,900 feet) into the air. Your ferry may make a stop at Urke, a delightful village where you can soak in the mountain scenery.

Finally, your cruise ends in Molde, the “City of Roses”. Plan your Norway trip for July to catch the Molde Jazz Festival . Or visit at any time to experience the Molde Panorama, a view of 222 majestic mountain peaks.

  • Visit Bergen on your tour of Norway

Lofoten islands - Best Norway Cruises

7. The Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands make up one of the most spectacular archipelagos in Norway. Known for their picturesque villages and phenomenal sea views, the islands are an irresistible destination for photographers and nature lovers. Opportunities for hiking, kayaking, and even winter surfing appeal to the active traveller too.

Plus they make for a perfect location for a cruise. From Svolvær, the Lofoten Islands’ capital, recommended options include venturing north to Tromsø or south down to Bergen.

Yet, there is plenty to see right here. Journey by boat beneath the monumental landmark of the Svolværgeita, and witness from a distance the astonishing Lofotveggen, the mountains of the Lofoten isles.

Alternatively, take a wildlife tour into Trollfjord, whose entrance at 100 metres (328 feet) is even narrower than the Panama Canal . Seals, porpoises, and even whales may greet you in this Arctic oasis.

Finding the best cruises in Norway for you

A Norway cruise offers a tranquil adventure that brings you within touching distance of the country’s most arresting scenery. But before you book your Norway tour , there are some important options to consider.

1. The season

During the summer in the north of Norway, the sun never drops below the horizon. Meanwhile some of the country’s most magical experiences – from the northern lights to snow-dusted views – are best saved for winter.

Whether you prefer snowy scenes or the gorgeous Nordic greens of summer, there’s no right time to visit Norway. But your experience will be quite different depending on when you choose to go.

20 of the best Norwegian fjords cruises

Norway is a place of staggering natural beauty, from fjords and snow-capped peaks to the northern lights. these are the voyages and cruise lines that showcase them best.

best norway cruise lines

N orway has the world’s largest concentration of fjords — as well some of the biggest and deepest. These natural marvels were carved out when Ice Age glaciers retreated and created an awe-inspiring contrast of snowy mountain peaks and sheer rock faces plunging into clear azure waters. Norway is also prime territory to spy the northern lights dancing across the polar sky and, come summer, experience the round-the-clock daylight of the midnight sun. Accommodation and food is pricey here, so a holiday afloat will keep costs down and you’ve got plenty of cruise lines to choose from. Here are some of the best.

1. Hurtigruten

Hurtigruten is a pioneer of cruising the Norwegian fjords. Its history goes back to 1893 when the company was founded to provide a daily passenger service for locals and deliver freight to inaccessible towns and villages along the length of the coast. These days the 11-night original route, from Bergen to Kirkenes, is available on passenger vessels, with the voyage passing about 100 fjords with 34 stops along the way. Ships hug the coastline so there’s always something to see and, on selected sailings, Hurtigruten’s northern lights promise means you get another sailing for free if the aurora borealis don’t put on a show.

Saga’s Spirit of Adventure

2. Saga Cruises

Saga’s two 999-passenger ships, Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery, get brownie points for their size; they’re small enough to dock at towns and quays that larger vessels simply can’t reach. The adult-only line’s fjords cruises include overnight stays in towns such as Flam and Geiranger, providing plenty of time for excursions — one being a trip on the Flamsbana Railway, which is one of the steepest in the world. Dedicated northern lights sailings visit at peak time and shore tours seek out viewing spots that provide the best chance of seeing them.

The all-inclusive line Scenic is launching its second ocean ship, Scenic Eclipse II, to join its original namesake vessel Scenic Eclipse. The 228-passenger vessels combine all the trappings of luxury with the thrill of expedition sailing in Norway. Soar above cascading waterfalls in one of the two onboard helicopters or dip underwater to get a different perspective of the fjords from the Scenic Neptune submarine, which can carry six passengers and dive to depths of nearly 300m (1,000ft). Back on the ship, chill out in the champagne bar or back in your spacious suite — some have private hot tubs.

Fred Olsen’s Balmoral in Olden

4. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines

This line is a natural choice for a fjords itinerary just as it was in 1848 when the Olsen family started sailing commercial ships in their homeland. The Olsen Art Studio has been introduced on the latest ships in the fleet, Borealis and Bolette, and they’re used for classes such as painting the northern lights. Fred Olsen’s smaller ships are perfectly proportioned for navigating the narrow waterways, and passengers can get even closer to the scenery with an exhilarating ride on the inflatable RIB boats, now carried on all of its vessels.

A Viking cruise at the Seven Sisters waterfall in Geirangerfjord

As its name suggests, this is another line with a Scandinavian pedigree. Viking’s carefully curated Norway cruises feature longer port calls and overnight stays that take advantage of the midnight sun in summertime and northern lights-spotting opportunities in winter. The fleet of near-identical adult-only ships all feature a Mamsen’s restaurant, named in honour of owner Tor Hagen’s mother. The 14-night Iceland & Norway’s Arctic Explorer itinerary crosses the Arctic Circle to visit the far north.

6. Holland America Line

The Unesco-listed landscape of Geirangerfjord is lined with dramatic waterfalls and it winds for nine miles, plunging to depths of 500m (1,640ft). You can see it in style from the decks or balconies on Holland America Line’s new music-themed, 2,668-passenger flagship Rotterdam — the seventh vessel to bear the historic name for Holland America — with itineraries that include midnight sun sailings. Shore trips include Eidfjord, with the chance to go kayaking or sit back and enjoy a scenic drive to a cider and apple brandy factory.

7. Windstar Cruises

After a bow-to-stern renovation on Windstar’s all-suite 312-guest Star Legend, passengers can now glide through the fjords in refined comfort. Kayaking, biking, walking and small-boat excursions are among the options to fill your lungs with fresh Norwegian air. View one of the country’s most famous landmarks, Preikestolen or Pulpit Rock, on an RIB excursion along the Lysefjord. Look out for sea eagles, seals or porpoises before gazing at the vertiginous rock that projects out from the rock face 600m (1,969ft) above the fjord.

This cruise line gives you the chance to join a National Geographic photographer and get tips on taking the best snaps on shore tours and in the onboard photo workshop. Begin by focusing on the Crayola-coloured wooden houses in Bergen — the starting point for sailings that follow the fjords to Tromso on the 126-passenger Endurance, the first polar-class new-build ship in the company’s history, or Resolution. Upmarket Cunard is renowned for cultural immersion. Expect shore excursions in Bergen to include a visit to the former home of the composer Edvard Grieg with a concert in the unusual, turf-covered Troldsalen concert hall. Sailings are available on Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2, including a week-long Southampton round-trip fjords itinerary. Cruises follow Viking trading routes along the 1,300m (4,300ft)-deep Sogneford — dubbed King of the Fjords because it’s the largest and deepest in Norway.

Families and multi-generational groups can opt for a school holiday cruise and there are also sailings on the line’s adult-only vessels Arcadia and Aurora. The Ventures by Seabourn programme provides exciting excursions such as an exhilarating Zodiac boat trip to Storstappen Islands, home to thousands of puffins, snowshoeing, ice fishing, dog and reindeer sledding.

Sky Princess (Alamy)

13. Princess Cruises

Princess has round-trip sailings from Southampton on its cruise ships Sky Princess and Island Princess, with a range of quirky excursions. Our favourite? The chance to take a leisurely walk with llamas through fjord meadows. You’ll wander from the hamlet of Skjolden and follow trails set against a backdrop of some of the highest peaks in Europe. For something more conventional, there’s a stroll around Unesco-world heritage Bryggen, a medieval port founded by wealthy merchants and lined with paintbox-coloured wooden buildings.

14. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian’s latest vessel is a Prima Class ship carrying 3,215 passengers. Features include infinity pools and a glass-walled sauna in the outdoor spa — the perfect hot spot to watch the cool passing scenery. It will sail to Norway and its 2023 itineraries will also feature sailings from Southampton. An innovative feature on this ship is the Magic Carpet, a glass-sided cantilevered platform projecting from the side of the vessel that can be raised up and down between different decks and is variously used as a bar and restaurant. Alternatively, sail out of Southampton on round-trip Norwegian cruises on Celebrity Silhouette. Both vessels feature The Retreat, an exclusive area for suite passengers, with its own sun deck, restaurant and lounge.

A Havila ship in the Lofoten Islands

Havila mirrors Hurtigruten and carries cruise passengers and locals between Bergen and Kirkenes on eco-friendly ships that can sail for up to four hours on battery power. There is a big accent on Norwegian cuisine and dishes on the menu change every couple of days to reflect the destinations being visited — they even include tasting-sized plates so you can try a bit of everything. If you don’t see the northern lights on sailings from October 1 to March 31 you’ll get another cruise free of charge.

This means no fixed dining times, relaxed attire, and more lounges, bars, theaters, and other entertainment and activity options.

With such a diverse fleet, choosing the right ship can be a challenge. In this article, we’ve taken the guesswork out of the equation. We rank the best Norwegian Cruise Line ships, taking into account what each of these vessels offer. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sea traveler, this post will help you find the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for your vacation.

Table of Contents

Best Norwegian Cruise Ships (NCL) Ranked and Reviewed

1. norwegian bliss – overall score: 9.8/10.

best norway cruise lines

Launched in April 2018 and refurbished in 2021, Norwegian Bliss offer passengers a memorable cruising experience. We were impressed with the range of cabin layouts, from one-person Studios to The Haven villas, penthouses, and suites. If you’re looking for a touch of luxury, The Haven accommodations come with perks like private sun decks, king-sized beds, and 24-hour butler service.

For entertainment, you won’t run out of things to do. The ship has a race car track, laser tag, and even a virtual rollercoaster in the arcade. We found the 19 bars, nightclubs, and lounges perfect for unwinding after a day of fun. And when you’re craving food, there’s a choice of three Main Dining Rooms, a buffet restaurant, and a 24-hour pub. If you’re in the mood for something different, there are 13 other eateries offering everything from Mexican to Texas-style barbecue.

However, it can feel crowded at times, especially around the pool area. So, if you’re someone who values a bit more personal space, this is something to consider.

2. Norwegian Joy – Overall Score: 9.7/10

Norwegian Joy

Launched in 2017, Norwegian Joy initially served the Asian market before transitioning to cater to Western cruisers. We really like its two-level race track on the top deck, which offers a unique go-karting experience at sea. If you’re into tech and games, the Galaxy Pavilion provides a lot of interesting virtual reality games.

Deck 8 is a hub of activity, hosting a variety of restaurants and bars. Evening entertainment includes the Broadway show “Footloose” and comedy performances. It’s worth noting that while there’s a plethora of activities onboard, some come with an additional fee.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @chihoboken

Accommodation options on the Norwegian Joy cater to a range of preferences and budgets. The attentive crew ensures a comfortable stay for all guests. However, some travelers find the pool deck layout, featuring two smaller pools separated by a space, a bit odd.

3. Norwegian Encore – Overall Score: 9.5/10

Introduced in 2019, the Norwegian Encore has quickly become a favorite among cruisers. This ship is a celebration of the arts, with the Tony Award®-winning musical “Kinky Boots” headlining its entertainment lineup. The Encore’s cabins are a blend of luxury and practicality. The Haven suites, with their spacious layouts and dedicated butler service, are a an excellent choice for those who want an upscale experience.

If you’re into racing, the ship has the longest racetrack at sea. For those who enjoy tech, the Galaxy Pavilion offers a range of virtual reality games. And for evening entertainment, the Choir of Man show is worth checking out. For food, there are six main restaurants and 12 specialty spots. You can grab a quick bite at an American diner or sit down for some Japanese hibachi. When it’s time to rest, you have a range of room options, from solo traveler Studios to the more private Haven staterooms.

A heads-up: some areas, especially popular dining spots, can get a bit busy during peak times. And like any other NCL ship, be prepared for extra charges.

Best Norwegian Cruise Line Ships Ranking Methodology

When it comes to ranking the best Norwegian Cruise Line ships, our approach is both comprehensive and objective. Here’s a breakdown of our methodology:

  • Data-Driven Approach: Our rankings are not based on personal biases or opinions. Instead, we’ve aggregated data from multiple trusted sources, including customer reviews, expert analyses, and industry reports. This ensures that our list is both accurate and representative of the broader cruising community’s experiences.
  • Customer Reviews: One of the primary metrics we consider is feedback from passengers. By analyzing reviews from various platforms, we gain insights into the real-world experiences of those who’ve sailed on these ships. This helps us understand the strengths and weaknesses of each vessel from a passenger’s perspective.
  • Transparency: While we strive to provide the most accurate rankings, it’s essential to note that our team has only been on a few Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Therefore, our list is primarily based on the data we’ve gathered and not on personal experiences.

Choosing the Best NCL Ship for You:

Selecting the right ship for your cruise adventure can make all the difference. Norwegian Cruise Line offers a diverse fleet, each ship tailored to cater to specific traveler needs. Here are some tips and considerations to help you make an informed choice:

1. Traveling Style:

  • Family-Friendly: If you’re traveling with family, especially kids, look for ships with amenities like kids’ clubs, family cabins, and water parks. Ships like the Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Bliss are known for their family-oriented activities.
  • Couples-Oriented: For a romantic getaway, consider ships that offer couples’ spa treatments, intimate dining options, and adult-only zones. The Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Getaway provide a more romantic ambiance

2. Ship Age and Experience:

  • Newer Ships: If you’re looking for the latest amenities, cutting-edge entertainment, and modern designs, opt for the newer ships in the fleet, such as the Norwegian Encore.
  • Classic Experiences: For a more traditional cruise feel with a touch of nostalgia, the older ships like the Norwegian Dawn or Norwegian Jade might be more to your liking.

3. Dining Preferences

NCL is known for its ‘Freestyle Dining’ concept, allowing guests flexibility in their dining choices. However, each ship offers a unique set of restaurants. If you have specific culinary preferences, research the dining options available on each ship.

4. Entertainment Options

From Broadway-style shows to live music and comedy acts, entertainment varies across ships. If entertainment is a priority, check the lineup of shows and activities on offer.

5. Itinerary and Destinations

While the ship’s amenities are crucial, the destinations it sails to are equally important. Ensure the ship you choose sails to the locations you’re eager to explore.

Last but not least, consider your budget. While all NCL ships offer a luxury experience, the cost can vary based on the ship’s age, itinerary, and cabin type.

FAQs on the Best NCL Ships

The most luxurious ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet is the Norwegian Prima. Introduced in 2022, Norwegian Prima was designed to be more upscale than its predecessors. The ship boasts the largest variety of suites in the NCL fleet, with 13 categories, including the most expansive three-bedroom suites of any new cruise vessel. The highlight of Norwegian Prima is “The Haven,” an upscale luxury zone that spans eight decks. This area houses 107 of the ship’s suites, a vast private indoor lounge, private outdoor lounge and pool areas, and an exclusive restaurant. The entire ship exudes a more refined ambiance, reminiscent of Norwegian’s higher-end sister brands, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

The biggest Norwegian is the Norwegian Encore. Launched in 2019, it spans 169,116 gross tons and can host up to 3,998 passengers. As part of the Breakaway-Plus class, the Encore is renowned for its expansive go-kart track, laser tag area, and the immersive Galaxy Pavilion virtual reality zone. Alongside these attractions, it offers a variety of dining and entertainment options, ensuring a memorable experience for its guests.

According to reviews and our testing methodology, the best NCL ship is Norwegian Bliss. But ultimately, the best ship for you depends on your preference and taste. NCL offers a fleet of 19 ships, each with its own unique offering. The newer ships offer a lot of features and activities, so they’re great for families. But if you want somewhat quiet and a classic cruising experience, older ships can be a lot of fun too. Depending on your preference, you can choose a NCL ship that’s just right for you. Norwegian cruise line destinations, norwegian cruise line cruise prices, what is the best norwegian cruise line ship, what’s included on ncl cruises, ncl firsts in the industry: what is norwegian known for, ncl loyalty program: latitude rewards, norwegian cruise line credit card, what is ncl known for.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is one of the top players in large-ship cruising, and its fleet is seeing one of its biggest refits in decades with its new Prima fleet of ships. Norwegian Cruise Line ships are also known for their colorful hull art that makes them stand out in ports around the world.

The company dates back to 1966 when it got its start as a Norwegian shipping company. Today, it has become one of the more popular mainstream cruise brands and is part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, which also includes the Regent Seven Seas and Oceania brands.

If you’re scrolling through endless Norwegian Cruise Line reviews, let this complete guide to the cruise company give you the larger overview of what sets this brand apart from the rest. There are some interesting innovations from Norwegian that other cruise lines have since adopted, but they started here.

NCL sails around the world with numerous routes from the U.S. to Caribbean destinations as well as around the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas.

Its loyalty program, onboard amenities and variety of cabin types offer something for every type of traveler.

Cabin types: You can expect a range of different cabin sizes and layouts ranging from solo-traveler interior studios and inside cabins for as many as four people to ocean view and balcony cabins. A wide range of suites are also available. The Prima class of ships feature the largest suites, some of which have private whirlpools on the balcony and as many as three bedrooms.

Main U.S. routes: NCL has plenty of North America sailings from U.S. ports to Alaska, Bermuda, Canada and New England. There are also sailings to the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico and the Panama Canal, among others.

Loyalty program: NCL's Latitudes Rewards loyalty program, which issues one point for every night sailed as well as bonus points for booking suites or participating in certain promotions. At each elite tier, members earn onboard benefits like discounts, laundry service and special event access. The more you travel with NCL, the more benefits you can earn.

You'll find lots of good deals on Norwegian, but cruise fares will fluctuate based on the destination, time of year and other variables. You’ll want to keep these factors in mind when booking a cruise, as they'll affect the price of the trip:

Time of year.

Trip duration.

Destination.

Ship class.

Cabin type.

You can find cruise bargains for as low as $350 on four-night cruises, but if you want to splurge and do a longer cruise, expect to pay as much as $4,600 or more (especially if you book a suite or a Haven category room).

Of course, the fare will always vary depending on which cabin type you book.

When it comes to which NCL ship is best, that depends on what you're looking for in a cruise. If you're traveling with a family, for example, water slides, amusement park-style games and multi-bedroom suites may be important. This means you may prefer one of the line’s newest Prima Class ships: Norwegian Prima or Norwegian Viva.

If you're looking for a romantic vacation, perhaps you'll want a smaller ship or a cabin in The Haven, which is a hotel-within-a-hotel concept with more personalized service. The Haven is only available on select Norwegian ships, including Encore, Viva and Prima.

What is the newest NCL ship?

Norwegian Viva launched in the summer of 2023, making it the newest ship for NCL. It has special features like a three-tier race track, the fastest slides at sea, a food hall with 11 complimentary eateries and a sustainable cocktail bar.

Latitude Rewards awards members with points based on each night they sail, and they can earn bonus nights when booking certain categories of suites.

Occasional promotions also offer double-night credit. You will only earn cruise points on eligible sailings where you are paying a traditional fare; promotional sailings with a heavy discount might not be eligible, although you would still receive the benefits at your tier. Also, sailings on sister lines do not qualify for Latitude Rewards cruise points.

As you accrue nights, you earn elite status that delivers onboard benefits that grow with each status tier.

Latitude Rewards levels

The loyalty program has seven levels, from Bronze to Ambassador. The full roster of onboard amenities can be found on the Norwegian Cruise Line website . There are some extra perks that come with certain tiers.

How to earn Latitudes Rewards points

Earn one point for every night you spend on a sailing and double points in suites or The Haven category accommodations.

How to redeem points

This program does not offer any points to redeem. Instead, you would earn benefits on future cruises related to your particular elite tier. Ambassador members (700+ points) earn a free 7-night cruise.

Spending on the Norwegian Cruise Line® World Mastercard® won’t earn you Latitude Rewards points (the only way to do that is by sailing with NCL), but it will earn you WorldPoints. This currency can be redeemed for onboard credits on future sailings, Norwegian Cruise Line shore excursions and other travel experiences. The card has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, making it ideal for world travelers.

With the Norwegian Cruise Line® World Mastercard, you earn WorldPoints as follows:

3x points on NCL sailings.

2x points on eligible airfare and hotel purchases.

1x point on everything else.

Earn 20,000 WorldPoints, which is good for a $200 onboard credit or discount toward a future cruise, if you spend $1,000 or more in the first 90 days the account is open.

How to redeem WorldPoints

Each WorldPoints point is equivalent to one cent, which you can then redeem for things such as:

Stateroom upgrades.

Travel discounts.

Last-minute cruises.

Onboard credits.

Car rentals.

Hotel stays.

Gift cards.

No, but you can pay for a Wi-Fi package, which starts at $29.99 per day per device.

No, but all sailings do include accommodations, activities, food and beverages, and entertainment. There is the ability to purchase extra benefits on each ship.

There are several drink package options on NCL sailings:

Non-alcoholic

The Unlimited Soda package includes all fountain soda drinks for $9.95 per person per day.

The Unlimited Starbucks package includes all Starbucks drinks for $12.95 per person per day.

An adult over the age of 21 could opt for a non-alcoholic drink package, but that means everyone else on their reservation must also get non-alcoholic drink packages.

Premium offers most drinks that cost $15 and under. You can pay the difference if you choose a more expensive drink. This unlimited package costs $109 per person per day.

Premium Plus offers even more drink options, mostly premium and top-shelf category labels, bottled water, Starbucks drinks and energy drinks for a flat price of $138 per person per day.

Keep in mind that alcoholic drink packages must be purchased for all people above the age of 21 in the same reservation, and those under 21 must pay for the soda package. The policy is intended to prevent people over the age of 21 from getting alcoholic drinks for other members of their party that did not pay for the alcoholic drink package.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers sailings at different price points to a global range of destinations. It is also known for its beautiful hull art, pioneering Freestyle Dining and adding buzzworthy amenities like ice bars and race tracks to its ships. NCL cruises are fun for all types of travelers, and its loyalty program can provide added perks along the way.

Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

Norway Cruise Itineraries

Embark on an unforgettable cruise to Norway aboard Celebrity Silhouette or Celebrity Reflection. Sailing from May to August, our Norwegian fjord cruises last anywhere from seven nights to nine nights. Longer itineraries give you the chance to see towns like the mountainous Flam or the remote Geiranger. On a Northern Europe cruise, you’ll overnight in Oslo on the way to cities like Copenhagen, Bruges, and Paris, or visit the capital before venturing to Sweden and Finland.

Best Norwegian Cruise Ship preview image

With many contemporary and freestyle cruise ships to choose from, Norwegian Cruise Line offers an exciting array of options for discerning cruisers. Wondering which Norwegian ship is right for you?

The ideal Norwegian Cruise Line ship for you may vary depending on your travel preferences. Norwegian offers a variety of ships tailored to different types of travelers. For families with teenagers and tweens, options like the Norwegian Encore , with family-friendly attractions like waterparks and go-kart tracks, might be more suitable.

Solo travelers or retirees seeking specific features may find ships like the Norwegian Epic or Norwegian Sun better suited to their needs. Norwegian also offers ships catering to budget-conscious travelers as well as those looking for a touch of luxury.

In essence, the best Norwegian cruise ship for you will hinge on several factors. What works best for a family vacation might not align with a couple's cruise or a getaway with friends. To assist you in choosing, we've compiled our top recommendations for the best Norwegian cruise ships based on five distinct traveler types.

Norwegian Epic : Best for solo travelers

6.jpg

When it comes to finding the best Norwegian cruise ship for solo travelers, Norwegian Epic takes the spotlight.

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic has gone the extra mile to cater to solo travelers, making it stand out not just within the Norwegian fleet but across the entire cruise industry. It boasts an exceptionally spacious private area exclusively designed for solo travelers, featuring a two-story lounge for solo meetups and dedicated solo cabins.

Located discreetly within the ship, this "studio" zone offers a private haven for solo travelers, comprising a remarkable 128 solo cabins—more than any other ship afloat. While these cabins are compact, measuring 100 square feet, they are thoughtfully designed to optimize storage space. They are conveniently clustered around the Studio Lounge, a private space equipped with its own bar and a communal TV area where solo travelers can gather during daily hosted happy hour events.

Access to the Studio Lounge is restricted to solo travelers staying in the dedicated solo cabins, ensuring an exclusive and intimate atmosphere for you and your fellow solo travelers.

Norwegian Epic pioneered the concept of exclusive solo zones on Norwegian ships, later adding them to six additional vessels in the fleet. However, none of these subsequent zones rival the scale of the one on Norwegian Epic.

However, it's worth noting that these solo cabins are all interior cabins without an ocean view, although some feature windows overlooking a corridor.

A word of caution: These solo cabins are in high demand and often book up well in advance, with prices that may not differ significantly from booking a double occupancy cabin.

Norwegian Prima : Best for luxury lovers

image1.png

If you're a luxury enthusiast, you now have a new top choice in the Norwegian fleet: Norwegian Prima.

Launched in 2022, this 3,215-passenger vessel marks the debut of a more upscale class of Norwegian ships following suit this year. This marks a significant elevation of the brand.

Norwegian Prima stands out with its impressive range of suites, boasting 13 categories in total, including the largest three-bedroom suites on any new cruise vessel. If you're seeking luxurious accommodations and have the budget for it, you'll find ample choices on this ship.

What truly sets Norwegian Prima apart as the best Norwegian cruise ship for luxury enthusiasts is The Haven, an upscale luxury zone spanning the entire back of the ship. This space features 107 exclusive suites, a spacious private indoor lounge, private outdoor lounge and pool areas, and a dedicated restaurant, all reserved for guests in these suites.

While Norwegian has introduced private suite areas in the past, The Haven on Norwegian Prima is unprecedented in scale. If your goal is to experience the epitome of luxury on a Norwegian ship, you won't find anything better.

The ship's entrance leads to the striking Penrose Atrium, a three-story-high marvel that may well be the most beautiful atrium on any large ship. Its artistic, sculptural design creates an exquisite visual experience.

This elegant theme carries over to a range of high-end dining venues, including Nama, a new sushi restaurant known for its sophisticated design, and Norwegian Prima's rendition of Le Bistro, the signature French eatery, featuring stunning crystal chandeliers and opulent gold-leaf wallpaper.

Notably, the public areas, including these restaurants, offer a more spacious atmosphere compared to many other Norwegian ships, thanks to Norwegian Prima's higher space-to-passenger ratio, which reflects its upscale approach. The ship also maintains a superior crew-to-passenger ratio, ensuring a higher level of service.

In essence, when you're ready to elevate your cruise experience, Norwegian Prima is the ship to choose.

Norwegian Encore : Best for families

image4.png

As the largest ship in the Norwegian fleet, Norwegian Encore , with its 169,145-ton size and capacity for 3,998 passengers, offers ample space for an array of family-friendly activities. These ships were purposefully designed with families in mind, and Norwegian Encore takes the lead.

On the top deck, you'll find thrilling waterslides and a kiddie splash zone, perfect for the little ones. But the excitement doesn't stop there. Norwegian Encore boasts one of the largest go-kart racing tracks at sea, spanning two decks and nearly 1,150 feet long. With sections extending beyond the ship's sides and a central observation area for cheering and interactive "laser" boosts, it's a high-speed adventure.

Additionally, Norwegian Encore features a generous laser tag arena and the Galaxy Pavilion, an expansive indoor gaming and virtual reality zone loved by tweens and teens. Complementing these attractions are dedicated children's play areas, pools, and family-oriented entertainment, ensuring non-stop fun from sunrise to sunset.

In summary, Norwegian Encore offers a plethora of  family-friendly activities that make it difficult to experience everything in a single weeklong cruise with your kids.

Norwegian Sky : Best for budget travelers

dacbb17113974589c8e1a6f09d89e598.jpg

When seeking an affordable and straightforward getaway, Norwegian Sky stands out as your choice, especially during the summer season.

Based in Miami for a significant portion of the year, this 24-year-old vessel offers a range of short voyages to the Bahamas and longer Caribbean trips from spring to fall. The common thread among these options is their exceptional affordability on a per-night basis.

For many sailings departing from Miami, Norwegian Sky often starts at under $100 per person per day, although rates may vary depending on the week. In some instances, shorter sailings on the ship can be found for as low as $249 per person for the entire cruise.

Notably, Norwegian Sky frequently ranks at the top of Norwegian's cruise listings when sorted by the lowest price on the company's website.

For prospective Norwegian cruisers, the shorter sailings offered by Norwegian Sky from Miami present an ideal opportunity to test the waters. With their brief duration and budget-friendly pricing, they allow you to explore the cruise experience without a significant time or financial commitment. These shorter voyages cater to first-time cruisers and Florida residents who can book on short notice and easily access the port for a quick escape.

As one of the two ships in the Sun class, dating back to the early 2000s, Norwegian Sky may not boast the same level of luxury and amenities as the newer and larger ships in the Norwegian fleet. With a tonnage of 77,104 and a capacity for 2,002 passengers, it is considerably smaller and offers fewer venues, including bars, restaurants, and entertainment spaces. Unlike the larger ships, it lacks features like a water park or go-kart track, making it less suitable for family travel.

However, Norwegian Sky's appeal lies in its intimate atmosphere, which sets it apart from the larger vessels in the fleet. It serves as an excellent choice for budget-conscious adults who prioritize simplicity and the essentials in their cruise experience.

Norwegian Sun : Best for retirees

Norwegian_Sun_departing_Port_of_Tallinn_25_May_2012_(cropped).jpg

If you're an older traveler seeking a Norwegian cruise ship that offers a quieter, child-free experience, Norwegian Sun is an excellent choice.

Dating back to 2001, Norwegian Sun is one of Norwegian's older and more compact vessels, distinguishing itself from the newer, larger ships in the fleet by lacking many of the family-oriented attractions commonly found onboard. This means you won't encounter extensive waterparks, go-kart tracks, or laser tag zones on this ship.

The ship's top deck primarily consists of sunning areas, featuring a single pool and whirlpools, in line with the design of ships built over two decades ago. Consequently, Norwegian Sun tends to attract fewer families and caters more to an older crowd, primarily couples.

Notably, Norwegian Sun is often chosen for extended and destination-focused itineraries, particularly appealing to retirees seeking immersive travel experiences. Over the next two years, the ship is set to embark on extended voyages from less common home ports.

Norwegian Sun is also among the smaller and less family-oriented ships deployed to Alaska during the summer season, making it a preferred choice for retirees interested in this destination.

With a tonnage of 78,309 and a capacity of 1,976 passengers at double occupancy—less than half the size of Norwegian's largest ships—Norwegian Sun offers a more intimate cruising experience compared to the ships mentioned earlier.

However, it's important to note that due to its smaller size, some signature Norwegian features like the private The Haven suite complex and solo cabins are not available on this ship. Nevertheless, you'll find a variety of dining options, including multiple main dining rooms, a casual buffet, a diner-style pub, a steakhouse, an Italian trattoria, and a French bistro. Additionally, the ship offers a showroom with nightly performances, a casino, a multipurpose basketball/volleyball court, golf driving nets, and a jogging track to keep you engaged during your voyage.

In the quest to find the best Norwegian cruise ship tailored to your preferences, it's clear that the Norwegian fleet offers a diverse range of options, each catering to different travel styles and interests. Whether you're a solo adventurer seeking the unique solo traveler experience aboard Norwegian Epic , a luxury enthusiast desiring the upscale ambiance of Norwegian Prima , or an older traveler in pursuit of a more tranquil journey aboard Norwegian Sun , there's a perfect cruise ship waiting for you. And when it comes to booking your dream cruise seamlessly and uncovering the best cruise deals, look no further than our platform, Cruisebound . How to choose the best cruise ship cabin for you.

Balcony staterooms on Norwegian Prima feature a Scandinavian color palette with some modern design ... [+] touches.

Choosing your cruise ship cabin or stateroom is an essential part of planning a dream cruise vacation. The right accommodation can enhance your cruise experience, providing you with a comfortable retreat after a day of adventure, but some choices may turn out to be an expensive mistake.

Here’s how to select the best cruise ship cabin for your needs, whether you're seeking breathtaking views, peace and quiet, convenience, or the best value.

Cruise Ship Cabin Grades

From motel-sized inside cabins to luxurious suites that rival the most expensive land-based hotels, cruise ships offer a range of accommodation grades to suit all preferences and budgets:

Interior Cabins : The most budget-friendly option, these cabins are located inside the ship and have no windows. Although they are often just as spacious as oceanview cabins, the lack of natural light may be off-putting to some.

Oceanview Cabins : Offering a window or porthole, these cabins provide natural light and views of the ocean or ports, a good middle-ground option. On modern ships, such cabins will likely be located towards the bottom of the ship, as balcony cabins now dominate ship exteriors.

Balcony Cabins : These cabins feature private balconies allowing direct access to ocean breezes and private views. These cabins are perfect for those who prefer to enjoy the scenery privately.

Netflix’s Best New Show Arrives With A Perfect 100% Critic Score

Apple watch series 10 to boast welcome upgrade report claims, wwe raw results winners and grades on april 15 2024.

Some ships offer cabins with direct access to the promenade deck, while the largest ships, including MSC World Europa , offer balconies overlooking an internal courtyard or promenade.

The newest, largest cruise ships such as Royal Caribbean's 'Icon of the Seas' offer a huge range of ... [+] cabin grades and locations.

Suites : The most spacious and luxurious option, suites often come with extra amenities and services, ideal for travelers looking for a premium experience. Separate bedrooms, wraparound balconies, and even butler service are some common features of cruise ship suites.

Pioneered by Norwegian Cruise Line, solo traveler cabins are becoming more common across the industry. Whereas for many years solo cabins were usually interior grade, there are now oceanview and even balcony cabins available for solo travelers on some lines.

Consider The Location

Perhaps more so than the accommodation grade, the cabin location can significantly impact your cruise experience.

Top-to-bottom : Cabins on lower decks are usually cheaper with the added benefit of experiencing less movement in rough seas.

However, depending on the size of the ship, they could be farther from entertainment and dining areas. On big ships, there may be 10 or even more flights of stairs between your cabin and the pool, sun deck, buffet, and other amenities found at the top of the ship. There will be elevators, of course, but you should expect queues at busy times.

Cabins on higher decks will provide better views from balconies and suites, and good access to many of the ship’s amenities, but passengers may feel the ship's movement more. You may also hear more noise from outdoor activities on the pool deck.

Cabins on middle floors offer the best combination of access to facilities and less movement in the event of rough seas.

Front-to-back : Just as important as the deck number is the cabin’s location between the ship’s front and rear.

Cabins located at the very front and very back of the ship will experience significantly more movement in the event of rough seas, so choose a cabin towards the middle of the ship if you’re facing multiple sea days or sailing off-season.

Inside cabins on the 'P&O Arvia' cruise ship are a good value accommodation option. They can be ... [+] configured with a double or twin beds.

It’s also worth knowing that most cruise ships feature main dining venues at the rear and the main theater at the front.

The Budget Accommodation Choice

When choosing a cabin, start with understanding your budget. Decide how much you’re willing to spend and remember that while the cabin is important, you’ll also want to budget for on-board activities, excursions, beverages, and other expenses.

If budget matters above all else, an interior cabin is a wise choice. You could also save money by booking a saver fare offered by some cruise lines.

These fares typically don't allow you to select your cabin in advance. This will likely result in you being allocated a cabin at the front or back of the ship, but it will save you money.

Questions To Ask Yourself

If you have more flexibility in your budget, consider what’s important to you in accommodation. If you plan to spend a lot of time in your cabin, you might value a balcony or a spacious room more. Families might look for cabins with connecting doors or extra bed options.

Before booking, read reviews of the ship and specific cabins on websites such as Cruise Critic or watching YouTube reviews. Previous travelers can offer invaluable insight into noise levels, views, and overall satisfaction.

Examine the ship’s layout to see where your cabin is in relation to key areas like the lido deck, dining rooms, and entertainment venues. Consider potential noise from above or below your cabin, especially if it’s immediately above or below a dance floor, crew area, or near the pool.

Your cruise itinerary might also influence your choice of accommodation. For scenic cruises, such as those in Alaska or the Norwegian fjords , a balcony might be worth the splurge to enjoy the magnificent views in relative peace. A balcony breakfast while sailing along a fjord will be an experience to remember.

On the other hand, if you plan to spend most of your time exploring ports and partaking in onboard activities, the type and location of cabin might be of less importance.

Things To Do

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.

best norway cruise lines

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

Norwegian Cruise Line reveals new onboard dining, including first Thai restaurant at sea

Ashley Kosciolek

Ready your stomachs. Food options on Norwegian Cruise Line's newest ship, Norwegian Aqua, will include a dedicated Thai restaurant, as well as an eatery that caters to passengers who prefer plant-based diets.

Norwegian is introducing Sukhothai, the first Thai restaurant at sea, featuring new spins on traditional dishes, and Planterie, which will offer a menu of meatless bowls.

Here's everything we know so far about these two new dining options.

best norway cruise lines

Sukhothai, a sit-down restaurant on Norwegian Aqua's Deck 17, plans to whip up Thai favorites, such as cashew chicken, salt and pepper prawns, grilled steak salad, and a number of curries. Its interior, designed to evoke Thailand, will be a mix of modern and traditional, featuring colorful furniture and rice paper pendant lights. You can dine there for an extra fee.

Planterie will be positioned in the ship's Indulge Food Hall . It will cater to anyone looking for meatless meals with selections like the Mediterranean Goddess Bowl, packed with spiced vegetables, tabbouleh and honey-roasted carrots, and the Southwest Bowl, which features smoked tempeh. As with other venues at Indulge, Planterie will offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and the food will be included in the cruise fare.

NCL also announced that Norwegian Aqua will house a new wine bar called Swirl. Despite the venue's upscale nature, its goal is to remain approachable — something the bar hopes to accomplish by offering an extensive list of wines by the glass, as well as more rare and premium vintages. It will be found on Deck 6, between the Whiskey Bar and Hasuki, the ship's hibachi-style eatery. The interior design was inspired by Antelope Canyon in Arizona, featuring warm colors and a serene atmosphere.

"Expanding on our award-winning food and beverage program, we're looking forward to bringing new concepts to life aboard Norwegian Aqua, while continuing to deliver on the variety of available offerings and value that NCL delivers," said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line, in a statement.

In addition to the new venues, returning passenger favorites — some with a new twist — include the Metropolitan sustainable cocktail bar , Nama Sushi and Sashimi, the Surfside Cafe buffet, Mediterranean seafood restaurant Palomar, The Local Bar & Grill, Cagney's Steakhouse , main dining rooms Hudson's and The Commodore Room, upscale Italian restaurant Onda by Scarpetta, French eatery Le Bistro , and Mexican restaurant Los Lobos.

Other standout ship features already revealed for Norwegian Aqua include a 10-deck dry slide with a nearly vertical drop, a hybrid waterslide and roller coaster, and Glow Court, a glowing sports court illuminated with LEDs.

The 3,571-passenger ship, which will be the first in the line's expanded Prima Plus Class — a larger version of the Prima Class — is slated for completion in April 2025. For the first four months, the vessel will sail seven-night Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, Florida, near Orlando. The ship will then relocate to New York's Manhattan terminal to sail a brief series of voyages to Bermuda before taking up residence in Miami and returning to Caribbean cruises through the end of 2025.

Charting New Waters: Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Ambitious Plans For Eight Ships

best norway cruise lines

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd  (NYSE:NCLH) has unveiled a total of eight vessels, representing nearly 25,000 additional berths to be built across three brands.

The company also launched the construction of a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s private island destination in the Bahamas and its Caribbean port of call.

The strategy is expected to boost Norwegian Cruise’s product offering, guest experiences, and operational infrastructure.

The new ship orders across all three brands are scheduled for delivery over a ten-year period, between 2026 and 2036.

After the delivery of four Prima-Plus class ships from 2025 through 2028, the cruise operator is expected to take delivery of four approximately 200,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of nearly 5,000 guests, in 2030, 2032, 2034, and 2036.

Oceania Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 86,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 1,450 guests in 2027 and 2029.

Finally, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 77,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 850 guests, in 2026 and 2029.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said President and CEO Harry Sommer.

The company has obtained export credit financing with favorable terms to fund 80% of the contract price of each of the two Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships.

The new pier development in the Bahamas is set to begin in summer 2024 and be completed by late 2025 with an investment of about $150 million.

Stifel  analyst Steven Wieczynski reiterated a Buy rating on the shares with a price target of $25.

NCLH now has 13 ships on order over the next 12 years for a combined 41,000 berths, representing about 65% capacity growth, noted the analyst.

With a historically smaller fleet, the company has been building new ships more aggressively versus peers in order to enter/serve certain markets.

Over the next decade this will not only give NCLH the biggest growth story within the cruise industry but will also allow them to continue entering new markets with minimal cannibalization to their fleet, the analyst noted.

Owning cruise stocks when supply growth has been low for an extended period of time, as per the analyst. While the headline of eight ships might make investors panic, the analyst urged them to look at the fine print.

Overall, according to the analyst, the positives surely outweigh the negatives.

Price Action : NCLH shares are trading lower by 2.35% at $18.93 on the last check Tuesday.
