Best way to experience Bahamas

This is our second time coming to vacation with Kite Boat Cruises. This time we came with 4 kids. 20, 19, 12 and 8. Very diverse interests in our group. But we did a little bit of everything. Two days of twin tip. Two days of foiling. A day and a half of spearfishing / snorkeling. Day and a half of light touristy attractions. Like swimming with pigs for the kids. And diving the cavern at Staniel Cay. Danny got us around quick, safe and in comfort. Food was exquisite, Monica. Had our 20 year-old go from never flying a kite to going up wind and doing transitions in 4 hours of lessons. Not perfect. Not every time. But he did do it. Thank you Ales and Danny! Sounds unbelievable, I would not believe myself either. But that’s how it was. Took me way longer back when I started. Thank you KBC team!

I sailed with Kite Boat cruises on their FP 58 with colleagues from an entrepreneurship cohort for our annual retreat. I’ve chartered over 10 times and found Aritz and Lauren very pleasurable to sail with. Aritz ran the boat and is well organized and takes pride in the operations and maintenance of the boat. Lauren managed the cabin and food - her meals were on point, beautifully plated, and well received by my colleagues and I. While we didn’t kite surf, we enjoyed the snorkel gear and other toys on the boat including the motorized surf boards. We gave them specific “wants” for a short 5-day trip and they designed an itinerary that got all of our high points! Truly an enjoyable boat and crew - and having sailed with 10+ crews I firmly and highly recommend!

Brad (Professional Kiteboarder/Instructor, and scuba instructor) was such a patient, laid back, genuine person. His tips and demonstration helped me land 2 front rolls!! I really enjoyed taking to him about scuba diving and shark teeth hunting as well. Aritz is such an amazing captain! Extremely knowledgeable, very genuine, and provided us with the best kite locations daily, each one more spectacular than the previous day (didn’t think possible). His priority and focus on safety always made us feel at ease on the ocean. He went above and beyond to provide us excellent scuba and snorkeling opportunities, gorgeous smooth waters to practice e-foiling, and amazing secluded kite spots. Aritz was always asking how we were doing and truly made the most of everyday for us. Lauren is a fantastic cook, who works tirelessly for the group to provide drinks, snacks, and outstanding meals. The quality and caliber of food presented from a boat kitchen is phenomenal! Lauren is very attentive to guests, whether it’s making something special for a couples’ anniversary, Valentine’s Day, ginger tea, among many other examples. Lauren is also truly genuine, and takes time to get to know each person on the cruise, and makes a conscious effort to make each day extra special in paradise. This crew is absolutely the best you’ll find anywhere, and they provide an amazing service. If winds are low there are plenty of back up options (e-foil, snorkel, scuba, sea-scooter, paddleboard, swimming, hiking secluded islands, and more)! Hands down the best vacation we’ve ever taken!

Aritz, Lauren and crew are top notch. This is the best way to see the Bahamas. My primary interest is wind sports (kite and wing) and they have the Bahamas dialed. Accessories like SCUBA are icing on the cake. Their boats are an amazing way to glamp in style with more than enough space to relax, eat and prep for the next day. I’m ready to go back

The activity line up is over the top. Windy days you kite and the rest of the time you get to dive, snorkel, e foil and relax. I have done my fair share of traveling and this trip checks all the boxes and creates a few new ones! We have been 2 times for 2 weeks and plan on going back annually!

On a KiteBoat Cruise, you’ll enjoy access to private beaches in remote locations. The Bahamas promises completely empty sandbars and cays that provide calm, flat, clear blue waters and white sand beaches. Staying on a boat is an incredible way to discover the Bahamas and you’ll wake up in a new location day after day and, either kite to your heart’s content, or go snorkelling in coral caves and explore submerged wrecks. KiteBoat Cruises provide an exclusive service with a top notch crew who will escort you to the most beautiful kite spots in the Caribbean. You can even check out a plane that Pablo Escobar abandoned near the islands when on the run from the law!

Aboard the Lagoon 450 catamaran, the experienced captain guides the boat from one spot to the next. It’s a luxury experience with two kite instructors and a chef onboard who will prepare all your meals. The catamaran’s four double cabins are spacious and well-equipped with private bathrooms and built-in showers. All have air conditioning, large windows and 12v / 220v electrical outlets as well as plenty of luggage room. The communal area and the open deck have comfortable sofas to chill out and take it all in.

You’ll set sail from Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, and venture into a diverse area with regular winds from 12-25 knots during the season from December to April. Take a range of kite sizes and perhaps even a foil to make sure you maximise the conditions on offer, but KiteBoat Cruises also have strapless boards and a foil that you can rent. The crew will guide you to the right spot for the conditions each day. Although you’ll meet the crew in Nassau, you’ll spend the majority of the trip out of the town, on and around the islands. The boat crew will provide guests with all dining and entertainment but, if you arrive early or want to check out the town, Nassau has a great variety of attractions and dining options - from high-end European eateries to sushi restaurants.

Wind, weather and water

The water averages a perfect 25°C / 78°F so you can kite in swimwear and a rashie most of the time, but a shortie wetsuit might be useful on a northerly wind if you really feel the cold. The temperature drops at night to around 20°C / 68°F normally, so it’s perfect onboard the boat. A light jacket or hoody is worth having if you’re going to be out on deck during night passages when it can be a little chillier, as being out there under the stars, sailing through the Bahamian waters, is an incredible experience.

All levels are welcome and the KiteBoat Cruise catamaran plays host to everyone, from pro kiters to total beginners. Two IKO certified instructors sail with the boat from December to April and they teach and coach all levels with lessons available on a private or group basis. Downwinders are run in some locations and, in case you won’t be taking your own gear, the boat is fully loaded with everything from harnesses to hardwear.

The boat has a rescue dinghy that follows clients at every spot and the crew will ensure you never get you into a situation beyond your ability.

The catamaran’s four double cabins are spacious and well-equipped with private bathrooms and built-in showers. All have air conditioning, large windows and 12v / 220v electrical outlets as well as plenty of luggage room, too. If you sail into lighter breezes during your trip then worry not. The wild islands of the Bahamas are a beautiful, natural setting with incredible marine wildlife (as well as wild swimming pigs!). You’ll explore secluded beaches and get straight to the gold as the KiteBoat crew know the area intimately. If you want to get involved in the boat sailing then you can do that too. The boat is safe and well set up for families with kids.

GETTING THERE

Fly to the international airport on Nassau and then it’s just a 30 minute transfer to the harbour. There are many connections from the USA and Bahamas Kite Cruise recommends flying with bigger airlines, such as American Airlines or British Airways as their regular board bag rules / charges apply.

Food is prepared to fit in with the day’s kite sessions, with delicious meals served up from morning to night.

You’ll be treated to a mix of international cuisine as well as local specialties as the chef can adapt dishes to suit all palates and requirements. Meals are included in the price of the cruise and they’re communal events, so you’ll sit down with your fellow guests and look back at a day of shredding!

Kite Boat Cruises- The Bahamas

Aritz

Kitesurfing in The Bahamas it’s a unique experience. Wild islands, white sand bars, off-shore flat water beaches, downwinders and much more. The wind is consistent, normally between 14 to 22 knots and can reach up to 35 knots when the north wind blows. 10m and 12m most used kites, we also recommend to bring big kite as 15m for the low wind days. Water is warm (normally between 22-27 degrees C) but we recommend to bring a shorty for the strong wind days or north wind direction days.

The ultimate guide to kitesurfing in the Bahamas

Did you know that in the Bahamas you can find some of the most terrific kite spots in the Caribbean? Yes, what you heard, kitesurfing in the Bahamas is awesome!  if you want to combine kitesurfing with some of the best paradisiacal beaches in the world, then you can start planning your next kitesurfing trip to the Bahamas!

Cat Island is named after the English pirate Arthur Catt, who used to stop here on his expeditions. The long island has the distinction of being home to the highest peak in the Bahamas, Mount Alveria at 63 meters … on which is the Hermitage, an old monastery, with a panoramic view of the whole island. It is also the birthplace of Sidney Poitiers, the first black actor to win an Oscar in the 1960s. The main kite spot is located in the southeast of the island, opposite the Greenwood Beach resort and in the immediate vicinity of a beautiful pink sand beach that stretches for more than 10 km.

The water is always very warm in the Bahamas, the beaches still paradisiacal and the still virgin spots on Cat Island!

Kitesurfing season in the Bahamas

Before telling you what are the best kite spots in the Bahamas, let´s start with the best time to kitesurf in the Bahamas!

The well-established easterly trade winds blow regularly side-on or onshore from December to May at between 15 and 20 knots. The rainy season was from May to November with a risk of cyclones from August to October. The spot is flat, well sheltered from the waves. For beginners, the spot is not always easy, especially at low tide because of the reefs which are flush with the surface but which are clearly visible in the crystal-clear water. It is the ideal spot for beginners who can navigate a large lagoon with a sandy bottom where you can walk everywhere, including at high tide. Foil enthusiasts will also be able to evolve on this spot by sailing at the bottom of the bay (bring your equipment, no foil rental).

Regarding the temperatures, they oscillate between 25 and 28 ° C and water at 24/25 ° C. The nights are cool in winter and drop to 18 ° C on average. Do not hesitate to bring your shorty because it gets cold quickly when the trade winds blow hard and a sweater because the evenings can be chilly. From May to November it is the rainy season with a hurricane season from August to October.

The top 7 Kitesurfing spots in the Bahamas

The Bahamas are well known for their endless white sand beaches, their warm turquoise water in all seasons, their breathtaking scenery… And in this ideal environment there are also wonderful kitesurfing spots!

Without further ado, here you have the most breathtaking kitesurfing spots in the Bahamas! Here is the top 7 kitesurfing spots in the Bahamas:

1. GREENWOOD

Greenwood is the most famous kitesurfing spot in the Bahamas. Located along a fine sandy beach of ten kilometres, often deserted, it has the advantage of being quite windy, especially from October to April, with winds between 15 and 20 knots 3 to 5 days a week. Often you will be the only one to ride in this true earthly paradise. On-site, a small kitesurfing school can provide you with information on sailing conditions.

Greenwood is a long pink sand beach of more than 10km. This is the spot that operates the most frequently because it is the beach with the best exposure to the easterly trade winds. It works by NO, N, NE, E and SE!  You can go downwind to Litlle Winding Bay which is a beautiful beach accessible only by a kite. Just before this bay, you have very beautiful waves which unwind on the shore. Be careful because at high tide there is no beach and no way to land because it is bordered by cliffs.

2. PARADISE BAY

4.  HAWKNEST

If you want to feel like you have your own private spot, head to Hawknest. It is a mini spot, a 200m by 200m bay with a small beach, 5 palm trees, two hammocks, and a picnic table sheltered by a small hut. In short, the spot is too cute! It works by SO (rare direction). The downside is that you better not be afraid of small sharks. Shark feeding takes place every time you return from fishing in the canal next door … One of the rare spots where the beach remains large to launch regardless of the tide. However, as with Port Howe, there is very little water at low tide but it is still navigable.

6.  OCEAN DREAM

O cean Dream is a resort by a beach where a huge and tubular swell is formed thanks to the reef. On the other hand, the wind is weaker than other spots and sometimes too onshore, which makes it difficult to pass the bar!

7. LITTLE ISLAND

This spot is a bit far from Greenwood. It is a 1.5 hour drive in the North East of the island just before Arthur’s town. It is a tiny island located 300m from the coast. The first part of the road is fairly straightforward as you only need to take the island’s only asphalt road. The most complicated thing is to find the small dirt road which then leads to the beach. The paths are not maintained at all and there is little passage so nature quickly reclaims its rights. At the end of a long half-hour of the bumpy road, you will finally see a magnificent lagoon. At high tide, the small islet is barely discovered. The perfect wind is the East because suddenly it blows offshore on the island which will allow you to have an extra flat water surface for freestyle!

In a nutshell…

The Bahamas hosts some of the best kitesurfing spots in the world, that´s why it is sometimes considered the King of the crown when we talk about kitesurfing the Caribbean.  If you have time and you can afford a kite trip to the Bahamas, you won´t be disappointed.

Kiteboarding in The Bahamas

by Mariah Moyle | Oct 29, 2018

The one downside is that the majority of the country is located on the northern edge of the trade winds, so it’s not as consistent as it might be further south in the Caribbean. But the plus side is that it’s nothing like kiting in Maui or South Africa, with 30-40kt winds threatening to rag doll you if you make one wrong move. Here it’s pretty cruisy and not as much of an extreme sport as it is in higher wind regions.

So where do you start? Where should you go? What time of year do you visit? I get quite a few inquiries about kiteboarding in The Bahamas because of my Kiteboarding in Harbour Island post several years ago, so that’s the reason I decided to sit down and compile all of our knowledge and experience of the local riding scene into a blog post.

Now, most people use the terms kiteboarding and kitesurfing interchangeably. But I use the two terms to describe two styles of kite-sports. I am a kiteboarder. I typically use a twin tip board, which is great for flat water riding and jumping. Mark is a kitesurfer. He rides a strapless surfboard and goes out to the reef to surf waves. Don’t worry, we still love each other.

Although there is opportunity for both kitesurfing and kiteboarding, most of the riding you’re going to be doing throughout the islands is kiteboarding. There’s some pretty epic flatwater spots and I’ve included some videos so you can see how amazing it truly is here, and the best part is knowing that you don’t need to travel all the way to the South Pacific to get to these exotic and picturesque locations. So get settled in as I go over some hints, suggestions, and resources, and reveal a few of our favorite spots.

—–

The best time for kiting is November through April when the north winds blow in from the cold fronts affecting the continental US. Since we’re sub-tropical bordering on tropical, the winter months can be quite cool (average temps in the 70’s, but can get down into the 50’s), so you might want to consider a light wetsuit, farmer John/Jane, or a rash top.

I recommend that you at least wear a light rash top for sun protection. A lot of people use sun hats that clip under your chin, and even sports goggles. The sun reflection on the water can be intense. For your kite kit, I recommend bringing at least two kites if you can. Mark regularly rides a 12m kite. I’m typically on the 10m, sometimes on the 8m in proper cold fronts. Rarely do people ride anything smaller than an 8m or a 6m here. We used to have a beast of a kite, a 16m, that we used in super light winds, but that has since been retired.

Check Windfinder Nassau for the wind forecast. Typically the wind forecast is about 5kts higher than it actually is for the Nassau forecast. If it says it’s going to be blowing 15kts, it will probably only be 10-12knts, so don’t get your hopes up about having an epic ride. But in Eleuthera and Exuma , it’s pretty spot on. Also, be sure to check the Tide Chart for Nassau and the Tide Chart for Eleuthera . For The Exumas, you can use the Nassau tide chart, keeping in mind that the tides are 20 minutes prior to the listed tides for Nassau.

You won’t find kiteboarding shops in the Bahamas, and unless you book a kite vacation in Exuma, Cat Island or San Salvador, there’s no place to rent gear, so you’d better bring your own kites, board and harness if you want to kite while you are here. Heat Wave Surf & Swim sells a variety of techy watersports gear, with one location in Sandyport on Cable Beach, and one at Harbour Bay on East Bay Street in downtown Nassau.

Alright, now to discuss kite spots. Just keep in mind that you can probably go just about anywhere, pump up your kite, and have a great, uncrowded session, but here are a few of our favorite spots.

Nassau isn’t exactly the best spot for kiting in the whole of The Bahamas, only because the wind typically comes in from the east or northeast in the wintertime, and the island, being an oblong shape east to west, means the majority of beaches are side-shore to the wind. From our northern beaches, it’s a lot of out and back, instead of skirting the shoreline as you would on other islands. The best spot, really, is in front of Atlantis on Paradise Island, but trying to figure out how to get down to the beach if you aren’t a guest can be difficult, and the beaches are usually packed with tourists. But we do have a few spots that if the wind is right, you can really have some fun.

Saunders Beach

Saunders Beach is just west of the downtown area near Arawak Cay. It gets slightly better wind direction than farther west on the island and has a wide beach for launching. However it’s right in the harbor, so you’ll get boat traffic, cargo boats and cruise ships passing through so keep a watchful eye. There’s a reef offshore that offers decent kitesurfing.

Best wind direction: NE, E, NW

Go Slow Bend

The local riders will often be seen at Go Slow Bend, showing off to traffic passing by. It’s a little spit of rock jutting out at the point between Saunder Beach and Goodman’s Bay. Tricky to launch, and the wind can be gusty and inconsistent if you get too far into Goodman’s Bay in easterlies.

If you’re comfortable with going downwind and tacking back up, you can access this area and into Goodman’s Bay from Saunders Beach.

Best wind direction: NE, E

Sandyport Beach

This is a small crescent beach utilized by a few local riders. There’s not a whole lot of space to launch and it gets quite choppy, but it’s a great central location for those in Cable Beach. Watch for boats entering and exiting Sandyport.

Love Beach is on the northwest side of the island. Best at mid to low tide because the beach gets a little cramped at high tide and there are casuarina pine trees lining the shoreline. If it’s high tide with some swell, the waves will be pretty heavy as they crash onto the shore and difficult to get off from the beach. If there are people hanging out on the beach it’s even more challenging to launch your kite. There are a few rocks right off of the beach that you’ll have to dodge your way through to get out. If the wind is too far into the east it can be tricky to launch because the wind is lufty and if you’re not careful you can drop your kite into the casuarinas. Once you get out, it’s smooth sailing and the reef is right offshore making for great kite surfing. There’s also a local beach bar right there, so you can get a cold beer after your session.

bahamas kite cruise

Mariah kiteboarding at Love Beach

At the very western tip of the island near Clifton Heritage Park is a pretty stretch of beach that’s usually fairly vacant. When the waves are peeling they wrap around the south end of the island creating fun rollers in an otherwise fairly flat, protected bay. You’ll have to keep an eye out for the rare westerlies in order to utilize this beach.

Best wind direction: NW, W, SW

South Beach

On the southeast of the island is South Beach, also called Blue Hill since it’s at the end of Balliou Hill Road. It’s about the only shallow flat water riding in Nassau. It’s best at mid tide, you’ll find it’s just sand flats at low tide. The wind from the south isn’t often, so we don’t ride there as frequently, but it’s a super fun spot when the crew is out in force. Great spot for learning and beginners.

Best wind direction: SE, S, SW

bahamas kite cruise

Mariah enjoying some flat water riding at South Beach

Eleuthera, Spanish Wells & Harbour Island

Eleuthera, Harbour Island and Spanish Wells have prime locations to capture the north and east winds. Pull off to any of Eleuthera’s ambling stretches of powder soft beaches along the eastern edge of the island and you’ll find few crowds and ample room to launch your kite. It depends on where you are on the island – north near Gregory Town is better in NE and E winds, and south of Governor’s Harbour and Palmetto Point is better in E or SE. If you want to kitesurf, head to Surfer’s Beach near Gregory Town.

Best wind direction for Eleuthera beaches: NE, E, SE

Spanish Wells has a beautiful beach on the north end of the island, meeting at a sandy point to the west. The water is shallower so it’s decent flat water riding. You can find affordable Airbnb vacation home rentals in adorable colonial cottages.

Best wind direction for Spanish Wells: NE, E, NW

Harbour Island has three miles of beautiful pink sands beach to the east, and shallow flats of Girl’s Bank to the west. The winds from the east and northeast make this spot a perfect place for cruising up and down the beach, grabbing the full attention of the beach-goers and beachside lunch diners.

Best wind direction for Harbour Island: Any

Treasure Cay Beach is a stunning spot for kiting and the Treasure Cay Beach Resort is a great spot to base yourself. The beach is a powdery soft sandy beach that stretches for nearly 3 miles. With east winds you’ll be able to cruise up and down the beach and enjoy shallow water riding at the sandbar on the southeastern side.

Check out Bahamas Kite and Surf , which offers a vacation rental kitehouse and lessons.

The Exumas are an untouched kiteboarder’s dream. There are 365 islands stretching 140 miles northwest to southeast. The northern Exumas are only one hour’s boat ride from Nassau. Otherwise you can fly into the main settlement of George Town in the southern end of the island chain. There’s some great kiteboarding spots in Great Exuma, on both the east and the west side. To the west is Moriah Harbour, which offers shallow, flat water riding. On the east side you’ll find kitesurfing opportunities in Emerald Bay

If you have a boat, or are on a liveaboard cruiser, you’ll be able to take advantage of the endless opportunities to ride. Be very cautious and don’t attempt to kiteboard alone in the remote areas though. The tide rushes in and out of the cuts, and I’ve dropped my kite before and gotten swept away with the tide once, barely making it back to shore. We also came across a kite couple who were stranded on a sandbar as the tide was rising. One of them was driving the dinghy and the other was kiting. There were some kite issues with a tradeoff and they both ended up stranded. If it wasn’t for us coming along (in a very minimal boat traffic area!) they might have gotten swept out to sea.

Exuma Kitesurfing  is an outfit based in George Town that offers kite vacation packages, lessons, and an insider scoop on some of the best spots, especially if you are just learning.

Setting up for a session at a sandbar in the Northern Exumas

For a kite vacation, head to Greenwood Beach Resort on southeast Cat Island. This is a great off-the-beaten-path locale for kiters that are enthusiastic about gliding through uncrowded, crystal clear turquoise water. Professional kiteboarder, sports coach and resort manager Antione is there to instruct all levels if you are keen to learn. The winds are predominantly onshore with the ability to cruise up and down the shoreline for 8 miles. On the south end of the island is shallow, flat water riding at Port Howe, and a great spot for beginners. The resort offers a variety of kites in their kit include Cabrinha and North brands, as well as boards, harnesses and wetsuits.

The resort itself is modest and low-key, some of the rooms have AC and some don’t, which is fine in the winter months when it’s cooler. It’s a great budget option for those looking for a more social hostel-feel, and family-style environment, with the privacy of your own room. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served family style with an honor bar system. The resort is directly on the beach, and co-manager Pauline offers SCUBA trips for dive enthusiasts.

The 9 best Bahamas cruises for every type of traveler

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with the latest information.

The best Bahamas cru ises take you away from the daily grind, transporting you to theme park-like private islands and beach-lined paradises. Cruise choices include new and jazzed-up ships sailing an array of short and weeklong Bahamas itineraries. Cruising to the Bahamas is so easy you may even be able to go without a passport .

Family-friendly lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, offer cruises focused on the Bahamas all year. So do newcomers Virgin Voyages, with its adults-only sailings, and Margaritaville at Sea, offering short two-night hops and longer cruise-and-stay packages. The winter and early spring seasons bring a handful of itineraries on premium lines like Celebrity Cruises and Holland America.

The only cruise lines that don’t regularly offer Bahamas cruises are the luxury lines. But don’t worry, luxe lovers: Many of the ships we included on our list of the best Bahamas cruises offer suites that come with concierge services, private enclaves or special spa privileges. If a luxury cruise to the Bahamas is your goal, look at the top suite options on a mainstream or premium line.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Whether you’re looking for a quick and cheap getaway or a week at the beach, here are the best Bahamas cruise itineraries to start your search, in order from shortest to longest.

2-night cruises on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise from Palm Beach, Florida

Though cruising is relatively new to the Margaritaville travel and hospitality franchise, cruise line Margaritaville at Sea is essentially a rebranding of the old Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Its refurbished ship, Paradise, originally debuted in the 1990s for Costa Cruises.

One Jimmy Buffett-themed makeover later, the ship is a perfect fit for the laid-back vibe of the Bahamas. Grab a drink or a bite to eat from the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, try your luck at the Par-A-Dice Casino and enjoy plenty of entertainment, including the musical production, “Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy’s Ship Show.” There’s a kids club, a teen club, a spa and two pools stocked with beach balls and inflatable parrots.

The two-night cruise itinerary includes one day in Freeport, where you can shop, hit the casino, enjoy water sports or chill on the beach. The ship offers shore excursions, or you can explore independently. Margaritaville at Sea also offers cruise-and-stay itineraries of either four or six nights (including the two nights onboard the ship). These packages let you choose between two partner hotels in Freeport, where you’ll stay two or four nights on land, then hop back on the ship for your return night at sea.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise carries around 1,300 passengers in an assortment of inside and ocean-view cabins, all around 176 square feet, which is larger than the average for those categories on most mainstream ships. Ten suites with balconies are also available, with 524 square feet of space.

Who should go? Obviously, Parrotheads are gonna want to try this ship, with all its Jimmy Buffett-inspired themes and decor, but it’s also a good trial run for anyone on the fence about cruising. Pricing makes this a great cruise to enjoy an escape without spending a fortune. We found weekday sailings that begin at $99 per person based on double occupancy for an inside cabin.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas from Miami

This itinerary may be the best overall short Bahamas cruise. Both the three- and four-night cruises have stops at Nassau and Royal Caribbean ‘s massive private island — Perfect Day at CocoCay . Those two stops combined give cruisers the opportunity to enjoy water sports, spend some time at the beach and experience a bit of Bahamian culture.

Freedom of the Seas has plenty of onboard fun to occupy travelers of all ages on sea days. It’s loaded with top-deck slides and water features, specialty restaurant choices and more entertainment options than you can take in on a short cruise. Carrying around 4,000 cruise guests, Freedom of the Seas is big enough to impress without being overwhelming.

Plus, logistics for cruising out of Miami are simple enough for even first-time cruisers. From flight choices to pre- or post-cruise hotels, it’s a city that caters to tourists, especially the cruising ones.

Who should go? From first-timers to veteran cruisers, anyone looking for a short but fun-filled hop to the Bahamas should give Freedom of the Seas a look. Families looking for a quick escape will find entertainment and activities for toddlers to teens. The ship is also ideal for family reunions, bachelorette parties and birthday cruises. Couples will love the adults-only Solarium with its extra-large hot tubs looking out over the sea.

3- or 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida

When Royal Caribbean’ s giant Utopia of the Seas debuts in July 2024, it will offer a bevy of short sailings, including three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida. The 236,860-ton, 5,669-passenger vessel will be the second-largest cruise ship in the world and offer more exciting amenities than any other cruise ship sailing short itineraries in North America.

Why? The newest, biggest ships in the world typically sail longer cruises. Offering short cruises on its humongous Oasis Class ships is new for Royal Caribbean; sister ship Allure of the Seas will test out the concept before Utopia launches.

Families with kids will definitely go bananas over the choices on board the new ship. The top deck alone will feature three separate pool areas, a surfing simulator, a kiddie splash zone, a basketball court, two rock walls, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The ship will also boast an extensive selection of restaurants, bars, lounges and shops. Additionally, there will be an indoor skating rink, a spa and a showroom with Broadway-style shows.

Utopia of the Seas’ inaugural voyage is set for July 22, 2024, and will be a four-night cruise to Nassau and the line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay. The second sailing will be a three-night cruise to the Bahamas that departs on July 26, 2024.

Who should go?  Short sailings on this new ship will appeal to all sorts of cruisers. Historically, new ships are reserved for longer itineraries, so this is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a snack-size sampling of a brand-new ship without spending the money on a longer sailing.

Families craving a quick getaway where the entire brood is satisfied will not be disappointed. In addition to seemingly endless kid-friendly amenities and top-notch children’s programming, Utopia of the Seas will feature a casino and adults-only spaces.

3- or 4-night cruises on Disney Wish from Port Canaveral, Florida

Disney waited a decade to build its next new ship, but Disney dreamers had their wish granted in 2022. Even better, the new Disney Wish cruises to the Bahamas. Designed to be the perfect complement to a visit to Orlando’s Disney theme parks, these short cruises visit Nassau and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The four-night itinerary adds a sea day to enjoy the ship.

Disney Wish is designed to immerse cruisers in the various Disney worlds through technology. An onboard augmented reality game turns the Disney Cruise Line Navigator smartphone app into a virtual spyglass that lets cruisers participate in a fantasy adventure with Disney and Pixar characters. The AquaMouse waterslide combines a splashy tube ride in a two-seater raft with a pre-adventure tale told through screens at the beginning of the ride. Diners at the Worlds of Marvel restaurant take part in an interactive Avengers-themed experience through videos and special effects.

Wish carries 4,000 passengers in cabins and suites designed to simplify cruising with kids. But never fear, adult Disney fans; you’ll also find your spot on board. From the “Star Wars”-themed Hyperspace Lounge to the Quiet Cove adults-only sun deck, Disney manages to cater to grownups as well as kids.

Who should go ? This is obviously the best Bahamas cruise for lovers of all things Disney, including “Star Wars” and Marvel fans.

3- or 4-night cruises on Celebrity Reflection from Fort Lauderdale

Beginning in April 2024, Celebrity Cruises will sail three- and four-night voyages round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, year-round.

The 3,046-passenger Celebrity Reflection will offer a consistent rotation of three-night weekend cruises (departing each Friday and returning each Monday morning) and four-night weekday sailings (departing each Monday and returning each Friday morning).

Itineraries will include stops at Key West in Florida and Nassau and Bimini in the Bahamas.

Celebrity appeals mostly to the 40-plus set sans small children. It’s light on the kid-centric attractions (such as waterslides, go-karts and laser tag) that other big-ship lines include. The line offers instead lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas. (If you do have kids in tow, you can take advantage of the extensive children’s program, Camp at Sea. It provides supervised activities daily for children ages 3-12 in dedicated spaces.)

Celebrity Reflection is the line’s last and largest Solstice Class cruise ship. The Solstice C lass ships feature some of the most stylish outdoor pool decks at sea, with indoor, adults-only pool areas that, notably, are topped with glass panels embedded with solar panels that contribute to the ship’s power grid. You’ll also find large spas, casinos, showrooms and a nice selection of restaurants on board.

This ship also boasts one of the most spectacular suites in the cruising world — the 1,646-square-foot Reflection Suite. It was the first two-bedroom suite on a Celebrity Cruises vessel.

Who should go? This an ideal cruise for older travelers who are new to cruising and want to sample one or frequent cruisers who might prefer a shorter time at sea. Although Celebrity doesn’t draw many families with young children, the shorter Bahamas itineraries are also perfect for multigenerational family groups seeking an affordable cruise that appeals to all ages.

4-night cruises on Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady from Miami

Virgin Voyages aimed to be a disrupter in the cruise market from the beginning — creating a product designed to please even those who claim they would never set foot on a cruise ship. Yet the itinerary for this four-night Bahamas cruise on Scarlet Lady is fairly ordinary. Ports of call include Key West and a private beach club on the Bahamian island of Bimini.

It’s the ship itself that sets this cruise apart from the pack. You’ll find unique cabins (with balcony hammocks), brash red livery and one-of-a-kind onboard activities, such as tattoo parlors, drag shows and ‘80s-themed fitness classes, to keep its 2,700 sailors (as Virgin calls its passengers) entertained.

Who should go ? This is the best Bahamas cruise for the non-cruiser who is either young at heart or young and eager to party aboard this glitzy ship. If you’re easily offended by loud music, round-the-clock partying or sexual innuendo, this is not your Bahamas cruise.

4-day cruises on Norwegian Jade from Miami

Norwegian Cruise Line offers four-day sailings from Miami aboard Norwegian Jade. Ports of call include Key West and Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island.

Port diversions consist of touring the Key West Shipwreck Treasures Museum and the Key West Aquarium, shopping along Nassau’s Bay Street and exploring the white-sand beaches and pristine waters on Great Stirrup Cay.

The 2,402-passenger vessel is part of the line’s Jewel class of ships. Though the ship launched in 2006, it received a substantial refurbishment in 2017 that included a cabin remodel, new and expanded dining and a design overhaul.

Norwegian Jewel might not have the extensive top-deck attractions of newer ships, like Norwegian Prima, or as many restaurants and bars. However, passengers will find plenty to occupy their time onboard with scheduled activities, a casino, spa and pool areas.

Who should go? Families, couples and friend groups will appreciate the unstructured nature of a Norwegian cruise. The line’s “freestyle cruising” mantra — cruising without rigid dining schedules, dress codes and formal nights — is perfectly suited for short sailings. With a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times, passengers have lots of flexibility for their limited time at sea.

Related: Best time to cruise to the Bahamas

5-night cruises on Carnival Sunshine from South Carolina

I am a huge lover of five-night sailings. They are long enough to scratch the cruise itch and short enough to account for travel time to and from the port without adding any extra vacation days. Plus, the slightly longer itineraries are less popular with hard partiers who can be disruptive on shorter Bahamas cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line offers 10 different five-night sailings from Charleston, South Carolina, aboard the 3,002-passenger Carnival Sunshine. It’s currently Carnival’s oldest ship (it debuted in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny). However, in 2013, the line gave it a $200 million bow-to-stern glow-up and renamed it Carnival Sunshine. The overhaul produced a new top-deck WaterWorks water park, a comedy club and several bars, lounges and restaurants.

Depending on which itinerary you choose, you can chill out on the beaches of Bimini, shop Nassau’s iconic straw market or go horseback riding by the shore of Carnival’s private island, Half Moon Cay. Consider a pre- or post-cruise stay in Charleston to take in the city’s historic landmarks, epic dining and charming cobblestone streets.

Who should go? These cruises are the best Bahamas sailings for those who prefer the intimacy of an older ship and don’t care about flashy amenities and onboard attractions on newer vessels. Plus, they’re ideal for travelers who live north of Florida and are looking for a more convenient drive-to departure port.

8-night cruises on Carnival Venezia from New York City

The 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia is a bit of an outlier in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet. Originally built for Italy-based Costa Cruises and launched in 2019, it joined the Carnival family in May 2023. (Carnival Corporation is the parent company of both Costa and Carnival.)

The ship was renovated to add many of Carnival’s signature venues. However, many of its Costa-aligned, Italian-themed designs remain, including a real gondola “sailing” down the middle of its main dining room and a pool deck built to look like a Venetian boulevard.

Guests might feel like they’ve been whisked away to Italy thanks to regional touches like the handmade Italian gelato at JavaBlue Cafe and the Italian liqueur-infused concoctions found at many bars.

Two eight-night voyages out of New York City include stops at Freeport, Nassau and Half Moon Cay.

Who should go? This Bahamas cruise is ideal for anyone looking for a different Carnival experience during a weeklong cruise. It’s almost like traveling to Italy and the Bahamas in one trip.

Bottom line

The best Bahamas cruises offer something cruisers can’t quite get enough of — whether it’s beach time or party time. While short sailings are still the most popular Bahamas itineraries, you can find options for almost every cruising style. The key is identifying the cruise that fits your style, preferred activities and vacation budget.

'I believe he is alive': Cruise passenger who went overboard a week ago is a master diver, father says

Levion Parker went over overboard from a cruise ship in the Bahamas a week ago - but his father denies reports the pair were arguing beforehand.

The father of a 20-year-old man who went overboard from a cruise ship in the Bahamas believes he is still alive - despite the coast guard calling off the search.

"Levion Parker fell or jumped into the sea from a Royal Caribbean cruise in the early hours of 4 April, off the Bahamas.

His father Francel Parker said, contrary to some media reports, it wasn't a suicide - and that the family believes he is still alive.

The Parker family, from North Port in Florida, were travelling on the Liberty of the Seas when Levion Parker went overboard 57 miles off Great Inagua, the southernmost island in the Bahamas.

Francel Parker told local North Port newspaper The Daily Sun his son was a master diver working on a commercial fishing boat.

He said he threw six life rings off the boat in an effort to save him.

Some media outlets have reported the father and son were arguing before the incident, but Francel Parker denied this was the case.

He said his son had been drinking alcohol but suggested that was out of the ordinary, telling The Daily Sun: "We don't drink."

He added: "As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him. I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard.

"I believe he is alive."

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement: "The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard."

The coast guard then took over the search, which was called off at the weekend.

"Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time," the spokesperson added.

The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.

Subscriber only, travel | 8 new ships coming to norwegian cruise line, sister brands plus dock at great stirrup cay.

Norwegian Cruise Line's second Prima-class ship Norwegian Viva arrived to Miami on Nov. 28, 2023 as it began its first Caribbean sailing season. (Richard Tribou/Orlando Sentinel)

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.
