dry bag or plastic bag to keep your belongings

long shirt/shorts for snorkeling Menjangan (to avoid getting sun burnt!), sun block

extra towel or Sarong (after 3 hours snorkeling we felt a bit cold, good to have a dry towel to protect from the wind on the ride back to the coast).

I've done a lot of snorkeling (and diving) all over and this was one of the most varied reefs I've seen. The variety of coral and sea life was amazing. The first spot had really excellent clarity and visibility, though after lunch the water got a bit rougher and visibility suffered a tiny bit. If you're wondering if this is worth the drive this definitely is!

Menjangan island snorkelling Highly recommended & also a highlight. I can’t wear contacts, but have very bad vision – Yvonne went above and beyond to try come up with a solution for snorkling, and I’d accepted I probably wouldn’t see anything. Then, when I got to the snorkelling tour operator, they had -4/-4 Goggles, which was great as I could at least see something! Menjangan is beautiful.

We had wonderful experience snorkeling at Menjangan island with Bali Surya Tours Lovina. The island is a beautiful place to watch marine life. The trip organized by was flawless, even though we made last minute booking. Our guides Joe and Franky were extremely cheerful and entertaining. The island is very peaceful and the lunch on the shore was delicious. We saw a large sea turtle near the beach and the guide was helpful to dive deeper with our camera and take excellent footage of it up close.) Day 1: Your Hotel - Menjangan Island Snorkeling Day Trip - Your Hotel

For those who stay at Kuta, Ubud, Seminyak, Sanur, Lovina, we will inform on pick up time.

09.00am: Pick up at hotel at Pemuteran and Gerokgak area and drive to Pantai Pasih Putih Harbour to catch your boat for your Menjangan Island Snorkeling Day Trip.

09.15am: Arrive at Pantai Pasih Putih Harbour, we will provide you your mask, fins and snorkeling equipment.

10.00am: We will start our Menjangan Island Snorkeling Day Trip by snorkel at Reef Drop-Off point also known as Rock Wall or Dive Wall.

Descriptions: The most beutiful sight you will ever seen during any snorkeling tours you have been – Dive Wall separated the water into two colors – Dark Blue and Light Blue and you will see plenty of beutiful fishes, caves, corals which we don’t know how to describe. Best spot for snorkel and better than best if you want to do a dive at this spot. This is the world class diving spot. Most beutiful sight in Indonesia.

12.00pm: We will head to Menjangan Island.

Description: We will have lunch on the boat, or on the Menjangan Island. During the break, you can go to the Menjangan to visit:

• Pura Gili Kencana
• Taman Pingit Klenting Sari Temple

NOTE 1: Please wear decent clothes to enter the temple.

NOTE 2: Along the walking path towards the temple on the Menjangan Island, you will spot amazing views of cliffs and ocean. There are many good spots to take pictures and view are similar to Atuh Beach and Broken Beach in Nusa Penida Island.

NOTE 3: Menjangan in Java language means Deer, thus, there are may deer on Menjangan Island. These deers they swam from Bali Mainland to the island, and they are wild and please don’t feed them.

02.00pm: We will head to Coral Garden for snorkeling in Menjangan Island.

Description: Coral Garden offers a lot of colorful fishes and beutiful corals.

03.00pm: Head back to Pantai Putih Harbour.

03.30pm: Arrive at Pantai Putih Harbour, pick up and transfer you back to your hotel.

Snorkeling at Menjangan Island

A dozen miles off the coast of Pemuteran, only accessible by sea on guided tours, Menjangan Island features a nice coral reef in an idyllic setting. On the reef drop-off you will spot angelfish, clownfish and large shoals of chromis swimming above pretty healthy corals. This area offers some of the best snorkeling in Bali.

How to get to the Menjangan Island snorkeling spot

Pulau Menjangan is a small, unspoiled island accessible only by boat. It is part of the Bali Barat National Park. The easiest option for visiting this spot is to book a full-day tour with one of the many local operators.

Most tours leave from Pemuteran, to the north of the island. From that point, it takes an hour by boat to reach Pulau Menjangan. The price is about $80 per person for a day tour, including several snorkeling sessions and a lunch break.

Water entrance is either from the beach or from your boat.

Snorkeling tips to enjoy the best of Menjangan Island

The location described on the map, which is along the northern shore of Menjangan, is the most popular on the island, but tours may take you to a different location nearby, with more or less the same aspect.

The northern snorkeling area covers a wide area between the beach and the reef drop-off, about 150 to 200 yards apart. From the beach, you will cross a few dozen yards of sandy sea bed and rock (↕3-6ft/1-2 m), then a seabed covered with soft coral (↕3-10ft/1-3 m) as far as the reef drop-off.

Although there are interesting things to see on the reef flat including batfish, giant clams and blue sea stars, the best snorkeling is found when you get closer to the reef drop-off.

Here, the seabed is spectacular: shoals of green chromis and sergeant majors swim around the coral bommies, while parrotfish, butterflyfish and spinefoot with spectacular colors, come and go on the reef drop-off.

This spot is particularly rich in soft coral, especially the leather coral. Several species of angelfish, including the sixbar angelfish and the regal angelfish are easy to see. Try to find a sea anemone between the rocks: you are likely to see the ocellaris clownfish , better known to kids as “Nemo”.

In the deep blue of the reef drop-off, you may also have the chance to see a green sea turtle or hawksbill sea turtle , although they can be very shy.

Pulau Menjangan, like all Bali coral reefs, tends to be damaged in places. The reef drop-off, which was exceptionally well preserved a few years ago, has now broken or dead coral in some areas.

This area is one of the most popular spots near Bali. A large number of boats and guided tours stop here. Watch out for other people when you are in the water and for boats, too.

These spots are accessible to anyone with basic snorkeling skills, and feeling comfortable in the water and with his snorkeling gear. You will enter the water from the shore (beach, pontoon, ladder, rocks) or from a boat. The water height in the sea entrance area is reasonable, but you will not necessarily be within your depth. Moderate currents can occur in the area, even when the sea conditions are good. The distance to swim to reach the most interesting snorkeling areas of the spot does not exceed 200 meters. This level only apply when the spot experiences optimal sea and/or weather conditions. It is not applicable if the sea and/or weather conditions deteriorate, in particular in the presence of rough sea, rain, strong wind, unusual current, large tides, waves and/or swell. THE ESSENTIALS

• Menjangan Island falls within West Bali National Park.

Park entry fees:

Foreigners: Rp200,000 per person on weekdays, and Rp300,000 per person on weekends and public holidays.

Indonesians: Rp10,000 per person on weekdays and Rp15,000 per person on weekends and public holidays.

Fee for diving/snorkelling includes park entry.

• According to the official activity fees (see photo below) the price is Rp1,200,000 per person snorkelling and Rp1,600,000 per person diving – however, every time we've gone snorkelling the price has varied depending on how many people are in a boat. In our experience you can expect to pay around Rp1,700,000 for two people (Rp850,000 per person), and considerably less per person if you're in a larger group. This fee includes park entry (which is higher on weekends, see above), boat transportation, a guide and snorkelling gear.

• Snorkelling is a half-day activity, and you'll usually go into the water twice, in different locations. If you're keen to spend more time under water, have a word with your guide – perhaps for an additional fee you'll be able to visit another site.

• Boats to Menjangan Island leave from Labuhan Lalang and Teluk Terima Beach (see map below for the locations).

• Many dive operators are based in Pemuteran, and they also offer trips to Menjangan Island (usually departing from Pemuteran beach).

Diving and snorkelling around menjangan island.

The diving and snorkelling around Menjangan is exceptional. The abundance of marine life around Menjangan Island – which lies within the boundaries of West Bali National Park – is absolutely staggering, and the corals are bright and colourful. What will you see when diving or snorkelling? Turtles here are fairly common; you'll probably see pygmy seahorses, clownfish, sea fans, nudibranches, parrotfish, scorpionfish – the list goes on. Reef sharks can sometimes be seen and, occasionally, whalesharks too. We've also seen flying fish from the boat and, occasionally, a pod of dolphins. Menjangan really is an astounding place to explore under water, and the best place to snorkel and dive in Bali. Visibility here is usually excellent (50m+), and the island is known for the impressive walls that form spectacular dive sites. 

You will need to go to either Labuhan Lalang or Teluk Terima Beach (both are marked on the map on this page), where you will pay at the park ranger office. From these points you will take a boat to Menjangan Island, a trip of about 20 minutes. There are two components to the rate: a flat national park entrance fee (Rp200,000 per person on weekdays and Rp300,000 per person on weekends and holidays – rate as of 1 August 2020), plus the dive or snorkel fee, which varies according to how many people are on the boat. See if you can join another group if you want to keep the price lower. There are basic toilets and showers at the Labuhan Lalang and Teluk Terima Beach, and there is a toilet on Menjangan Island. 

Who to dive and snorkel with

It's very easy to arrange a snorkel or dive trip yourself – simply go to the ranger station at Teluk Terima Beach or Labuhan Lalang, pay the fee and get on a boat. The offices here open at 8am and we suggest you arrive then so that you can enjoy your snorkelling before any wind picks up. The resorts around Menjangan have their own dive centres, so if you're staying there they'll be your best bet for organising trips to Menjangan. There are many dive operators in nearby Pemuteran and all of them offer snorkelling and diving trips to Menjangan Island. 

Go prepared

The private dive operators and resorts usually arrange refreshments, but if you're travelling on your own and arranging your trip directly through the ranger station then take some water and a few snacks on the boat – you won't be able to buy anything on the island, and snorkelling does work up a hunger. There are a few warungs at Labuhan Lalang and Teluk Terima Beach, and you'll probably appreciate having lunch here as soon as you return. The Pantai ("beach") restaurant at The Menjangan resort is situated on a deck above the edge of the sea, and is a fantastic place to have a meal after snorkelling or diving. 

There might be rubbish

Trash is a problem all around South East Asia and, although Menjangan Island falls within West Bali National Park, there can be a lot (as in, disturbing amounts) of plastic in the water at times. There's no specific time of year that trash conditions are better – it depends on so many variables, including currents, and you might have a trash-filled morning snorkel and not see a single piece of plastic in the afternoon. If you'd like to do your bit to save the planet, you might like to snorkel with a net bag or wear boardshorts with pockets, and pick out some of the plastic you come across.

If you're wanting to do a few activities around West Bali National Park (trekking, cycling, do a mangrove tour or go birding), you will pay less if you do them all on the same day (because: park fees). Head to the ranger station the day before you'd like to do the activities, so that you can organise to get an early start and, for example, go birding before you snorkel.

In addition to diving or snorkeling, other attractions you can explore include the forests of West Bali National Park. The park covers an area of about 19,000 hectares, including Prapat Agung, Tegal Bunder, Cekik, Menjangan Island, Klatakan, Banyuwedang, and Teluk Trima. It comprises four types of forests: Mangrove Forest, Savanna Forest, Monsoon Forest, and Tropical Rainforest, making West Bali National Park a home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna.

Here, you can find protected endemic species such as the Bali Starling, a bird that serves as the mascot of the Island of the Gods and can only be encountered in West Bali National Park. Menjangan Island: North Bali’s Best Kept Secret

Menjangan Island is a tiny island off the northwest coast of Bali. The island sits in Bali Barat National Park, which is a protected marine reserve. Menjangan’s beautiful and unspoilt marine landscapes make it a popular spot among divers and snorkelers. Creatures which inhabit the waters around the island include hawksbill turtles, garden eels and manta rays. On dry land, the island is home to a herd of deer – the island’s name translates as ‘Deer Island’. Menjangan is easily accessible from the northwest coast of Bali – a journey of around 40 minutes by speedboat from Pemutaran/Labuhan Lalang.

Getting to Menjangan Island

Once you’re on Menjagan Island, it can feel secluded and like a world away from anywhere else. In actual fact, it’s very easy to reach the island from the northwest of Bali, from Labuhan Lalang, a port near Pemutaran.

Permits and guides

Strictly speaking, it is not possible to visit Menjangan Island completely independently. Rather, you need a permit and to be in the company of a park guide. These restrictions relate to the protected status of Bali Barat National Park. There is a park office in Labuhan Lalang where you can pick up a permit for Rp 20,000. Fees for a guide start at around Rp 350,000. Alternatively, both these things can be organised for you by most hotels in the area.

Getting to Menjangan Island by boat

The jumping-off point for trips to Menjangan Island is Labuhan Lalang, a harbour near Pemutaran Beach. It’s also possible to get a boat from Banyuwangi, which lies on the coast in between Menjangan and Labuhan Lalang. However, there’s no particular reason to do this and most travellers will depart from Labuhan Lalang. The boat trip from the mainland takes around 30 minutes. The return boat trip (on top of park and guide fees) costs around Rp 500,000 per person.

What to do in Menjangan Island

Menjangan Island is considered by many to be the best place in Bali to dive, and that’s saying something. It sits in the only national park in Bali, Bali Barat National Park. It’s also popular because it is suitable for divers and snorkelers of all experience levels. However, you should be aware that some dive sites are very deep and have strong current in places.

There are numerous beautiful creatures to spot in the waters around Menjangan Islands. At the Garden Eels dive site, you’ll spot eels sticking their heads up from the seabed and swaying hypnotically like seaweed. You can also dive the wreck of an old boat at Kapal Budak, and spot manta rays and barracuda at Bat Cave.

Culture on Menjangan Island

The main activity on Menjangan Island is undoubtedly diving and snorkelling. However, on the island itself there are several beautiful shrines. Most notably, there is a Ganesha temple, with a white statue of the god gazing out over the sea.

Hotel choices if you want to visit Menjangan Island

Although Menjangan Island is a very popular destination with visitors, there are no hotels on the island itself. This helps to preserve the island’s beauty, ecosystems, and unspoilt nature. However, there are lots of hotels to suit all budgets on the coast of the mainland nearby.

Budget hotels near Menjangan Island

If you’re on a tight budget, there are a couple of options when it comes to hotels near Menjangan Island. One is Menjangan View Homestay , which sits inland a couple of kilometres east of Labuhan Lalang. Rooms are in comfortable bungalows set in beautiful gardens, with a lovely outdoor pool. Room prices start at around Rp 208,000.

Midrange hotels near Menjangan Island

A great midrange option for exploring Menjangan is Naya Gawana Resort and Spa . This lovely hotel sits in sprawling grounds on the coast of Menjangan Bay. Accommodation is in beautiful wooden bungalows. Prices start at around Rp 1,000,000. Another mid-range option is Taman Sari in Pemutaran. This hotel has a similar feel, with lovely thatched bungalows, but also has its own beach. Prices start from around Rp 750,000. Another option is Bangsring Breeze . This is actually on the east coast of Java, but is within easy reach of Menjangan. Prices start at Rp 1,300,000.

Luxury hotels near Menjangan Island

There are also a few choices when it comes to luxury hotels near Menjangan. Plataran Menjangan sees you staying in luxurious villas in the traditional Joglo style. Prices begin at Rp 3,400,000. The Menjangan , meanwhile, is the biggest resort in the region, in 382 hectares of the national park. Again, you stay in traditional yet luxurious bungalows. Prices start from Rp 2,000,000.

Final thoughts

Menjangan Island is one of the best and most popular places in Bali to snorkel and dive. The island is reachable by boat from Labuhan Lalang on the northwest coast of mainland Bali. There are no hotels on the island itself, but several on the mainland nearby.

We arrange according to the weather and the request of the participants, we suggest a trip in the morning or afternoon we are explaining below as if we start at 9.00am - 13pm

At 8.30am, we meet at an appointment, then we leave to the boat place, on the boat will take about 45 minutes drive to Menjangan island, arrive at the island estimated at 9.45am, at 10am, we start to do first snorkeling or diving and it will take about 45 minutes and around 10.45am, finish the first snorkeling or diving, then get on the boat while enjoying lunch approximately11.30 pm start snorkeling or second diving and it will be finish around 12.15pm, then get on the boat again, drive back home and it is about 13pm ending your whole trip and hopefully your memorable snorkeling at Menjangan island or diving will be a fantastic trip to you

Menjangan Island is popular dive and snorkel destination. The Island is part of West Bali National Park.

Entrance fee ticket to Menjangan Island on normal day   IDR 215,000 per person and IDR 315,000 per person on Sundays and Indonesia Holidays .

Travel time from Banyuwedang Harbor to Menjangan Island approx 35 minutes by boat.

The day trip here normally leaves at 09:00 in the morning and back around 02 pm  visiting 2 snorkeling spot  and break time on the beach .
