Unfortunately, Nye’s Apple Barn has closed permanently. However, there are a lot of farms on Hollywood Road (a little past Nye’s) and in the area that sell fresh produce. We have a wealth of fresh picked fruits and vegetables!!

Check out the Farmer’s Market in St. Joseph on the Bluff in the downtown area. The Farmer’s Market is every Saturday from 9am to 2pm EST. It goes from Memorial Day weekend to October. They have fresh fruits, veggies, baked goods, flowers, cheese, and much much more.

Where the St. Joseph River empties out into Lake Michigan is where you will find Silver Beach County Park.

One of the best beaches in Michigan , and one of the best parks, as well – the park features a sweeping stretch of sand that is as beautiful to look at as it is to play on. No matter the time of year – but mostly in the summer months – this is one of the most popular places to visit in St. Joseph.

The park is open daily year-round from dawn to dusk. During the summer, you'll find the water is packed with swimmers, while the sand is a hive of activity, from beach volleyball to sunbathing to strolling along the shoreline. The beach area has a playground, a walking path, and is close to other tourist attractions in St. Joseph, like its historic carousel and discovery museum for kids.

Consistently considered to be one of the best lakefront beaches in America , the outdoor space here is known for its clean water, powdery soft sand, and epic lake views.

Michigan is a treasure trove for lighthouse hunters, and St. Joseph is no exception. The North Pier Inner and Outer Lights are two of the most famous and beautiful lighthouses in the state.

The station was built in 1832, but the current lights date back to 1906 and 1907. The first lighthouse in St. Joseph was actually a contender with the original lighthouse in Chicago for the oldest lighthouse on Lake Michigan. Today, while they have been decommissioned, they are among the prettiest lighthouses in the state. The Outer Lighthouse is a 35-foot-tall tower topped with a watch room and a 10-sided lantern room.

It is connected to the North Pier Inner Lighthouse by an elevated catwalk. These are gorgeous examples of lake lighthouses, and are among the most photographed in the state, especially as the seasons change. Winter shots can be particularly dramatic when the lighthouses are crusted in ice.

You can see the lighthouses from either side of the St. Joseph River, meaning they are visible from both Silver Beach County Park on the south side, as well as Tiscornia Park on the north side.

For more than 100 years, the Silver Beach Carousel has been entertaining the people of St. Joseph with its colorful, hand-carved horses; brass rings; lights; and music.

The Coney Island-style carousel came to St. Joseph in 1910, and began attracting visitors thanks to its highly realistic carved horses. Sadly, that carousel is no longer in St. Joseph, but the one that exists was designed with the original in mind.

The current carousel of St. Joseph was designed with six replica horse figures, as well as 20 unique horses, 22 manger figurines, the rocking peacock, the sea serpent chariots, and the expressive coloring. Even the rounding boards at the top of the carousel are unique, as each panel reveals a historical theme of southwestern Michigan.

Today the carousel is an icon of St. Joseph and takes visitors back to the heyday of the Silver Beach Amusement Park, which was in operation from 1892 to 1971. During the warm months, visitors can ride the carousel, snack on cotton candy, and take a magical horse ride back through time.

Across the St. Joseph River from Silver Beach County Park is another Lake Michigan beachfront outdoor space – Tiscornia Park. Tiscornia Park has lovely views of the North Pier Lighthouse , as well as a beach area, picnic spots, and a walkway for strolling and fishing.

Where you'll find most of the crowds over on Silver Beach, Tiscornia Park is a mellow, quieter alternative.

Take a stroll up and over the undulating dunes before feasting your eyes on a raw and exposed stretch of shoreline. Of course, the beach is most popular in the summer months, but come the chilly months, it's still a wonderful place to visit for some fresh air and moody winter views out over the lake.

If you want to take a tour of the North Pier Lighthouse, you can do so from Tiscornia Park. Tours are offered between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend.

With two locations in St. Joseph, the Curious Kids' Museum is one of the most popular places to visit for families in town. The hands-on discovery center has several different areas for kids to come and learn, play, and have fun.

The Curious Kids' Museum itself is spread over two floors. The first floor has a farmers market , a face-painting station, and even a kids' veterinarian clinic that includes mini-operating tables, real X-rays to read, and other kinds of animal educational activities.

The second floor has hands-on exhibits on the physics of sound, simple machines, the science of wind, and an imagination playground.

Down the hill at the Silver Beach Center, next to the Silver Beach Carousel, the Curious Kids' Discovery Zone is a play space with a climbing tower, wave table, water power tower, and many more hands-on activities for kids to play and learn.

St. Joseph, Michigan, is certainly not short on beaches. In fact, it has a long stretch of coastline with quite a few beaches to choose from.

Silver Beach is undoubtedly the most famous, and Tiscornia Park is right next door. But Lions Park Beach is a locals "in the know" spot located at the southern end of Lions Park Drive. The beach is small but beautifully maintained, with three shelters, public restrooms, grills, and picnic tables.

The park started as the Pumping Station Beach, but was renamed in the 1960s to honor the St. Joseph Lion's club, which has been maintaining the park since the 1920s.

Lions Park Beach is also close to the John and Dede Howard Family Recreational Trail, so it's often a top spot for walkers, joggers, or cyclists. A playground means you will find a lot of young families at the beach, as well.

Art lovers can get their fix with a visit to the Krasl Art Center right in downtown St. Joseph. Overlooking Lake Bluff Park and Lake Michigan, the Krasl Art Center has been bringing the cultural community of St. Joseph together for free exhibits and programming.

The nonprofit art museum is open seven days a week at no cost to the public. The rotating exhibits and installations are changed throughout the year, but Krasl Art Center has a collection of permanent sculptures, as well.

In addition to the galleries and exhibits, Krasl Art Center puts on a year-round calendar of educational programming, from photography classes to painting and ceramics.

A shop sells handcrafted jewelry and art. During the summer months, the Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff is held in Lake Bluff Park, bringing together more than 200 artists from around the country to showcase their creations.

For a funkier art experience, head to Box Factory for the Arts on Broad Street. The multi-use arts facility is a haven for the forward-thinking, bohemian, and offbeat artists of Southwest Michigan and northwest Indiana.

Brimming with history, the building was once an actual box factory that transformed into an art space in 1995. You’ll also find what may look like standard pet treats here, but they are flavored with such things as cherry apple spice, sweet potato, chicken, and peanut butter, which is in most of the homemade product since it’s good at sticking the ingredients together. 

Ride the Carousel

The Silver Beach Carousel is indoors by the beach in St. Joseph and open all year round. It’s a must-see, but you really should buy some tokens and take it for a spin. The hand-carved horses and brass ring machine date back to 1910. The Silver Beach Carousel Society was formed in 1997 to make sure its beauty is restored and maintained. The major restoration was done in 2010 and additional improvements continue to be made. 

Have a Buck Burger

The Buck Burgers & Brew is a staple in downtown St. Joseph for its food and beer. One of the things they are known for are the juicy burgers. You can pretty much concoct a couple hundred different burgers using their selection of patties, cheese, and toppings, but they seemed to have gotten it all right with one of their own creations: a Brie Cranberry Turkey Burger. Make sure you order it with sweet potato fries for the full Thanksgiving effect. 

Do a Wine Tasting

Southwest Michigan is a hotbed of wineries and two of those have tasting rooms right in downtown St. Joseph. At White Pine Winery, you’ll find classic, award-winning wines that fit right in at your dinner table, such as the Traminette and the Pinot Grigio.

Baroda Founders Wine Cellar has a bit more fun with the winemaking. They’ve bottled a red called Smoreleaux, which is infused with marshmallows and chocolate.

St Joe Michigan: Best Things to Do in St Joseph (Hotels, Silver Beach, Lake Michigan, Downtown Shopping and the Iconic Carousel)

St Joseph Michigan is a gorgeous beach town featuring Silver Beach (who doesn't love Lake Michigan?), great downtown shopping, the iconic Silver Beach Carousel, great restaurants, and lots of fun activities for families and couples.  Ice cream anyone?

The city of St Joseph Michigan is definitely a beach goers paradise. It's also my hometown so of course it holds a special place in my heart.  Summer evenings in St. Joseph are such a magical time as the noisy beach goers have vacated, leaving only the sounds of the seagulls and peaceful lapping water.  If you haven't experienced a St Joseph Michigan sunset, your life isn't complete.

The unparalleled views of sparkling Lake Michigan are absolutely stunning, especially while strolling along the beach.  I also love meandering along the paved dune path located high above the beach.  This high vantage point offers breathtaking views of the beach, sparkling Lake Michigan and the beautiful St. Joseph pier. 

Relish in the beauty of the sunset as the sky changes from glorious rich hues of pinks, oranges and reds.

Evenings overlooking Lake Michigan gives me such a sense of peace and re-balancing. The hectic day is forgotten as the lapping waves calm my mind and soul.   

St Joe Michigan Sculpture Along the Pier

“And You, Seas” by sculptor, Richard Hunt was commissioned in 2002 by the Krasl Art Center of Art of St Joe Michigan and the Berrien County Department of Parks and Recreation.  The stainless steel sculpture stands 55 feet tall and has weathered winds over 100 miles per hour!!

My Favorite Things to Do in St Joseph Michigan

• Walk along the bluff overlooking the lake.  If you're lucky, a swing (big enough for two) will be free.  The breezes are fantastic on a summer day as you watch the sailboats drift down the river. 
• Wander through the shops in downtown St Joe Michigan and of course, sip a cup of hot chocolate at the Chocolate Cafe.  Ask if it can be served with a chocolate spoon...ooohhhh (Homer Simpson style)
• Walk along the pier to watch boats of all kinds drifting down the river and out to the lake.  We love to watch the jet skiers showing off their best jumps.
• Play in the free water cannons and fountains at the Whirlpool Compass Fountain!  It's right across from the Silver Beach Carousel near the beach.
• Ride the Silver Beach Carousel!   If it's a hot day, cool off in the air conditioning and pick your favorite animal!  Be sure to check their website to verify their hours.  It changes with the seasons.

Experience Silver Beach in St Joseph Michigan

My niece (in the pink polka dots) just loves building sand castles at the St Joe Michigan Silver Beach!  The beach can be very busy in the middle of summer, so if you want to park in the close Silver Beach paid lots, you need to arrive by 10:30 am. 

Public Restrooms  on the beach are scarce.  There is one main bathroom on the beach but be prepared to wait in long lines.  If you are up for a walk, just past Silver Beach Pizza are stairs heading to the top of the bluff. There are restrooms near the top of the stairs.  St. Joseph Today Welcome Center located at 301 State Street (on the bluff) also has a restroom. 

Beach Parking -If you want to park in the beach lot in the prime summer months (for a fee), get there well before noon. 

Best Restaurants in St Joseph Michigan

• The Buck -I am OBSESSED with eating outside in the summer. Drives Chris nuts.  But he puts up with me because he loves me. ;)  ANYWAY, they have a great deck on the back with nice breezes and of course, good food.  I love the salmon salad and Chris always orders the burger.
• Silver Beach Pizza -Yep, you can eat outside.  I love this place.  BUT it is SWAMPED during the summer so, get there early.  You can also be placed on a waiting list and they will text you when your table is ready.  As a note, they have an upper deck that is adults only, 21 and over.  It's reservation only, so reserve your table early!  Enjoy a beverage and pizzas with a view of the water cannons and the gorgeous lake.
• Clementine's Too -Again, you can eat outside, overlooking the river.  This restaurant is on Broad Street, away from the busy beach area. 
• You must try their house-made onion rings served on a wooden peg...yum!  And I love their steak salad.

St Joseph Michigan Hotels

When staying in St Joe Michigan, it's all about location.  We recommend hotels right in the downtown area for easy access to Silver Beach, the pier, Lake Michigan, downtown St Joseph shopping and restaurants.

From a local's perspective (that's me), the Boulevard Inn is THE place to stay when in St Joseph. It's right across the street from the bluff where you can walk down to the beach.  You can't get any closer to the annual art fair in July.  The Boulevard Inn has a great restaurant with outside seating and you can walk to all the St Joseph downtown shops. 

The Inn at Harbor Shores  is also awesome. This lakeside inn features a marina, waterfront restaurant "Plank's Tavern," dockside bar, full service spa, coffee shop & wine bar, 12 miles of walking trails, water sports rentals with launch, bicycle rental, beaches and shops within a 5 minute drive.  All guestrooms feature a sliding glass door leading to a private balcony, undercounter refrigerator and more. Fitness center, outdoor pool, indoor pool...Address: 800 Whitwam Dr, Saint Joseph, MI

Chalk the Block happens the beginning of every August in St Joe Michigan.  Unbelievably talented artists take to the streets to create magnificent works of art IN CHALK!

I am always freaked out it will rain before everyone has a chance to enjoy the art before it is washed away!!  

Tips From A St. Joe Native!

St Joe Michigan is a great little Lake Michigan town in the Southwest part of the state.  Silver beach and the light house are the main reasons why people love this visit this area.  It is also very family friendly.  There are so many things to do with your family, like the Curious Kids museum where kids engage in hands-on science things to do. 

The interactive Whirlpool Compass Fountain is a great place for kids to play and even the adults have fun; if one doesn’t mind getting WET! Plus it's free!!

Boating, kayaking (rent from the St. Joseph River area), stand-up paddle boarding (rent them on the beach area), swimming, building a sand castle, playing on the playground equipment like slides, swings, jungle gym and other activities (on the beach) are great summer activities.

Another family fun activity is renting a Surrey Tram built for three to nine adults plus two kids (all pedaling around the downtown area).  

Walking out on both piers (north and south), seeing the lighthouse and enjoying the boats are enjoyable. Near the interactive fountain is the Silver Beach Carousel that is indoors taking one back-in time.  You can ride all different kinds of animals and there is a spinner that up to four can spin around as the carousel goes around.

The downtown area is great for shopping and restaurants.   Schu’s Bar and Grill  has great potato soup, salads and fish. When the weather is nice, you can eat outdoors with a view of Silver Beach and Lake Michigan.  You can't beat watching the sunset while enjoying a glass a wine on their patio! 

The Buck  for beer and great burgers with roof top dinning overlooking the Silver Beach area. 

Broad Street Cafe  offers a variety of sandwiches including fresh bagels with smoked turkey breast with lots of topping choices.  I enjoy the feta and spinach bagels.  The fun part is choosing your bagel!  Oh and don't forget to get a coooooookie!  

Away from the lake area located on Hightop road by the fast food restaurants is  Papa Vino’s Italian restaurant  (pastas, steak and shrimp) and it is one of my favorite places to eat. 

On the bluff area there is an  old cannon  pointed out towards the Lake that once protected the area from invading ships.  Kids can sit on it and take pictures pretending to be pirates!  ARRR!  In all, St Joe Michigan is a great place to visit in the summertime for the entire family!

1 – Play the Day Away at Silver Beach

The vastness of the beach at St Joseph Michigan cannot be overstated. With seemingly unending sand and sun, it’s easy to see why so many people love Silver Beach.

Take a sandy seat near the pier you’ll love seeing the action of fisherman, and fun shells that wash up. Or settle further down the beach by the playground and swings.

It doesn’t matter which spot you choose to spend the day at Silver Beach . The lookout points are beautiful and the sidewalk trail will lead you through the mini-dune and dune grass.

P.S. Don’t forget to walk the pier!

2 – Splash and Cool Off at Whirlpool Compass Fountain

This is one of those places you just have to experience for yourself. The fountain is on a spray cycle. Every so often, the water cycle starts again – first with small water action from the water cannons lining the perimeter, culminating in a majestic display of water art.

The pictures are awesome, yes, but actually being under this mega fountain is something hard to explain! It’s awesome, thrilling and fun for every age.

The Whirlpool Compass Fountain typically runs through the end of September but does undergo regular maintenance. Keep updated on its status on Facebook .

3 – Take a Ride on the Silver Beach Carousel

It’s hard to pass up a spin on one of the 40+ hand-carved horses from the early 1900s.

The carousel offers variety of seating options with a variety of animals, both moving and stationary.

4 – Explore Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone 

The Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone is located in the Silver Beach amusement park area of Silver Beach. It features traveling exhibits, a climbing tower lighthouse and a water table.

Visitor tip: Online reservations may be required for your visit and museum hours vary. Check their website before visiting.

5 – Grab some Grub (Food & Coffee Favorites)

When you visit a place with a local and that local is a foodie, you’re in for a treat.

St. Joe is not lacking in delicious food, with offerings for all ages and tastebuds:

6 – Eat at Silver Beach Pizza

This restaurant is so iconic it gets its own shoutout.

The famous Silver Beach Pizza is located in an old Amtrak depot at the beach. Their delicious food is so well known that wait times can be long during peak times; download the “NOWAIT” app to get on their waiting list.

7 – Shop the Unique Shops

The St. Joseph area is known for its shopping, including multiple thrift shop options. Stores are located throughout the downtown strip but also tucked away in the city.

Antique fans should visit during the Antiques on the Bluff events in the summer.

8 – Watch the Sunset 

Is there anything like a Lake Michigan sunset? There are multiple places to watch the sunset along Lakeshore Drive in St. Joseph and along the Benton Harbor strips.

One of our favorite spots is at Lookout Park across the street from the Holiday Inn.

10 – Enjoy Southwest Michigan’s Wine Country

The wine flows when you visit the St. Joseph area!

You’ll find local orchards, and wineries tucked throughout the area; many will let you pack a picnic to eat on their grounds.

11 – Visit the KRASL Art Center

Open since 1979, this museum is packed with art exhibits, classes, camps and workshops.

Visitor Tip: KRASL is open 7 days/week from April – December, and admission is FREE!

12 – Support Local at the St. Joe Farmers Market

Fresh finds with an amazing view of Lake Michigan? You’ll find both at the St. Joe Farmers Market.

Held at Lake Bluff Park, you’ll find a variety of typical farmers market fare: locally grown produce, flowers, meats, cheeses, coffee, and more.

Hours are every Saturday from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM, from May through mid-October. A few dates have extended market hours, so be sure to check ahead on their website .

13 – Golf at One Of The Best Public Golf Courses in America

14 – Chalk This Off Your Summer Bucket List

If you’re looking for a family-friendly event in late summer, make plans to attend the Chalk the Block Festival in downtown St. Joe.

Beginning Friday evening, amateur and professional artists take over Broad Street to create colorful chalk masterpieces throughout the weekend.

Your kiddos will enjoy the Chalk Kids Zone, where they can bring their creativity to life and create their own art!

Chalk the Block is usually held the first weekend in August and admission is free. Several other fun events are held during the festival too, making it a perfect weekend family getaway.

15 – Find Vintage Heaven at Antiques on the Bluff

If antiquing is your favorite past-time, Antiques on the Bluff is a must-see.

With more than 50 vendors, you’re sure to find delightful vintage treasures at this St. Joe antique show overlooking Lake Michigan.

Held at Lake Bluff Park on the first Sunday of the month from May through October, this event is held rain or shine. Admission is free. Hours are 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

The streets of downtown St. Joseph are situated on a bluff overlooking the beach .

This is no ordinary beach here: as you walk down the bluff from Lakeshore Boulevard (or head down the ramp – accessible,) you’ll find yourself on one of the best beaches on Lake Michigan .

The stairs lead you directly in front of Silver Beach Pizza, the Curious Kids Museum, the Silver Beach Carousel, and the much-anticipated crowd-pleaser, Whirlpool Fountain.

Continue west a few feet and you’ll officially be on the sand. Silver Beach spans the entirety of the downtown length, providing lots of room for choosing your perfect spot for the day.

If you’d rather start on the sand instead of walking over from downtown, park your car at the bottom of the bluff in the Silver Beach parking lot for easy access to beachside fun.

Another favorite fall color hunt — collect beach glass

As the colder waves kick up on Lake Michigan, so do the treasures along its sandy shore. With fewer people on the beaches , this is a relaxing time to hunt for colorful beach glass. These smoothed shards of broken glass from bottles and jars glisten among the multi-colored stones. The most common colors you will find in and around St. Joseph are shades of white, brown and light blue. Once in a while you can spot green, dark blue, purple and, very rarely, red or orange glass, too.

Family Fun in St. Joseph, Michigan – What to See, Do, and Eat with Kids

One of the destinations I get asked about the most is our yearly trip to St. Joseph, Michigan. From St. Louis, it is less than a 5.5 hour drive to this amazing family friendly vacation spot.

Since we are already up north in Chicago at least once a year to visit family, it is easy for us to tack on a couple more days for a mini beach getaway. St, Joseph features so many beautiful beaches, great food, and numerous family friendly attractions. The view below never gets old.

Things to Do

1. the beaches.

St. Joseph is known for it’s clean and beautiful beaches without the worry of sharks or jellyfish. There are several places around St. Joseph to stake out a spot and enjoy the sand, but the two closest to downtown are Silver Beach and Tiscornia Beach . Silver Beach is within walking distance from downtown and Silver Beach Center. It features a playground, restrooms, and a concession stand. Silver Beach was featured as part of the “T op Ten Beaches ” list by Parents Magazine. It can get busy so it’s best to go early or go late in the afternoon or early evening.

Parking is $15/car for non-residents. You can also park in a nearby city lot for $10/day or in the lots or streets at the top of the bluff for free.

Tiscornia Beach is located on the other side of the St. Joseph River from Silver Beach and provides access to the North Pier Lighthouse. Parking is a little cheaper and there are restroom facilities here as well, but no playground.

2. Silver Beach Center

Silver Beach is the location of the Silver Beach Amusement Park which operated for 80 years before closing in 1971. While all traces of the amusement park are long gone, you can view a glimpse of what once was by visiting the Silver Beach Center. Located within walking distance of both downtown and the beach, the center contains our daughter’s favorite attraction, the Silver Beach Carousel .

The beautifully crafted ride was built in similar style to the carousel that once operated at the former amusement park. An antique band organ original to the Silver Beach Amusement Park supplies the music and provides a fun show to watch as well. Tokens to ride the carousel are $3 for one, 2 for $5 or 5 for $10. There is a machine to purchase tokens or you can purchase in the gift shop. Adults riding next to a child under 42″ tall are free. *Due to COVID, for 2021, reservations are now required and the ride is $8 a person for as many rides as you want in an hour.

Be sure to bring plenty of quarters to run the model train displays next to the carousel.

More quarters are needed for this fun model in the gift shop that narrates the history of Silver Beach and lights up corresponding areas of the display. The gift shop also has a mini museum with more photos and information on the Silver Beach Amusement Park.

The Silver Beach Center also contains one of two kids museums in town. The Curious Kids Discovery Zone is geared towards kids ages 3-12 and has both permanent and traveling exhibits. Admission is $6 per person or purchase a combined ticket to see both museums for $10. Our kids especially enjoyed the Lake Michigan water table and climbing lighthouse. *Due to COVID reservations are now required.

3. Whirlpool Compass Fountain

Just steps outside Silver Beach Center is the Whirlpool Compass Fountain . This fountain is Michigan’s largest splash pad and sprays water 35 feet in to the air. The fountain runs 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Memorial Day through September and is free.

4. Silver Beach Pizza

After all this fun at Silver Beach you may be looking for a place to eat. Just a few more steps away from the fountain is the amazing Silver Beach Pizza. Located inside the functioning and historic train station, this popular dining spot has delicious pizza and is kid friendly. They give you a disc that is red on one side and green on the other. If you need something from your server, flip the disc over to the red side and they will be with you soon. You may even get lucky and see a train go past if you are eating in the outdoor area of the restaurant.

5. Curious Kids Museum

Remember how I said there were actually two kids museums in town? Well the second one is located not far from the first in the downtown area just up the bluff. The main Curious Kids Museum contains two floors of fun exhibits for kids of all ages to explore. If you have little ones ages 3 or under, this is the location I would recommend as it has more toddler friendly exhibits. It has plenty of things for the older to kids to see as well. *Due to COVID reservations are now required.

6. Eden Springs Park

Eden Springs Park first opened in 1908 in nearby Benton Harbor as an amusement park with a zoo, train ride, restaurant, hotel, mini cars, and other attractions. The park closed in the 1970s and fell into disrepair. A dedicated team of volunteers is in the process of restoring the site.

Currently they offer mini train rides on weekends from 12-5, Memorial Day through Labor Day. The ride is only $3 and offers a great view of the property and historic structures. Snacks and souvenirs are also available.

If you want to extend your stay, the park is also the site of a campground and cabin rentals.

7. Downtown Shopping

Now that you have satisfied your hunger and let the kids play more, it’s time for some shopping. This charming downtown area of St. Joseph has numerous shops, restaurants, and even ice cream. We always head to the Olive Cart for gourmet flavored olive oils and the Toy Company to let the kids have some fun shopping. A stop for treats at the South Bend Chocolate Company is also a must!

8. Take a Hike

If you need to work off those chocolate treats, there are many beautiful places close to St. Joseph to do some walking or hiking. Sarett Nature Center in nearby Benton Harbor has 8 miles of trails plus a nature center and an elevated tree top walkway. Admission is $3 for adults and free for kids.

Warren Dunes State Park is another beautiful place for a stroll. Rugged dunes rise above the 3 miles of beach and provide great views. 6 miles of trail ramble throughout the park. Admission is $9/day for non-residents.

9. Watch the Sunset

No trip to St. Joseph is complete without watching the sunset over the water. Whether from Silver or Tiscornia Beach or any of the other viewpoints in town, be sure to watch the sun slip below the horizon while dipping your toes in the soft sand. An added bonus is watching the active lighthouse light up for the evening.

Any combination of the above stops will make for a wonderful visit to one of our favorite Midwest beach towns. There are a few other places in the area that look fun but we have not made it to yet such as:

• Fe rnwood Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve – Beautiful gardens and trails along the St. Joseph River Valley. Includes a Children’s Adventure Garden and outdoor railway.
• Schuler Dairy Farms – Tours of this working dairy farm run Tuesdays- Sundays with fresh ice cream available.

Tips to Help Your Visit

• The water is crystal clear but also always cold. Our kids don’t seem to care, but if you want more time in the water then July or August will give you the best water temps.
• Beach parking is usually paid for by the day. There are cashiers at Silver Beach or pay machines at Tiscornia. Go early before 11 or later after 4 to beat the crowds.
• There is an hourly lot behind Silver Beach Center that is great and cheaper for visiting the center but it can close for private events.
• You can also park at the top of the bluff in the city lots or streets for free and walk down the stairs to all the Silver Beach area attractions.
• Parking at Silver Beach Pizza is only for diners. There is another city lot nearby for overflow or park up on the bluff. Silver Beach Pizza is popular and gets busy fast. Lunch is your best bet if you want to avoid a wait with kids. Wait times can be 2+ hours on a weekend evening.
• Hotels in the area can be pricey and few have a water view. Go with what fits your budget. We usually stay at the St. Joseph or Benton Harbor Comfort Suites. Vacation rentals are an option as well but many have minimum stay lengths of 3-7 nights.

The 9 Best Towns Along Lake Michigan

The state of Michigan rubs up against four of the five Great Lakes : Superior , Huron , Erie , and Michigan . The latter, in conjunction with the long western flank of the Lower Peninsula (better known as the "Sunset Coast"), creates one of the most attractive and congruous shorelines that The Great Lake State has to offer. There are large swaths of sandy beaches (oftentimes backdropped by ancient freshwater dunes) and plentiful waterfront towns that accent the landscape and the experience all the more. In order from south to north, these are nine of the best Michigan towns along Lake Michigan .

Tucked in the southwest corner of Michigan, St. Joseph, aka "St. Joe," is a viable beach town not only for those landlocked on the Lower Peninsula but also for residents of northern Indiana or Illinois. Split by the St. Joseph River, just as it empties into the vast blue waters of Lake Michigan, this small Berrien County city not only has an attractive pier (complete with two historic lighthouses), but popular beach parks on either side. Silver Beach County Park, which sits on the south side, blends into the downtown core, where both family-friendly and adult-appropriate attractions can be found. Be sure to catch a sunset at the aptly-named Lookout Park, and if you get the chance to make a small side trip, scoot down to Warren Dunes State Park to see the colossal sand dunes in all their glory.

South Haven

Less than 30 miles up Lake Michigan's coast from St. Joseph, the triple threat that is South Haven emerges. This Van Buren County community has a magnetic downtown core, a storybook Old Harbor Village, and two inviting beaches (South Beach and North Beach) that are once-again divided by a long pier (stemming off the Black River), that is this time tipped by a bright-red lighthouse. The intersection of Water and Center Street is where the shopping, coffee, and culinary explorations can begin, with each surrounding square block unveiling new independent businesses. The Old Harbor Village, which has been sculpted to mimic an old-fashioned fishing enclave, adds even more artisanal shops into the mix, as well as riverside eateries and accommodations. Like St. Joe, South Haven also has a sand-dune-themed state park (i.e. Van Buren), just a few minutes drive south of the city.

Saugatuck/Douglas

The sister villages of Saugatuck and Douglas await another 20 miles up the road from South Haven, in a section of Michigan known as "The Art Coast." Based around either side of Kalamazoo Lake/Kalamazoo River (Douglas on the south shore, Saugatuck on the north), but still adjacent to Lake Michigan, these Allegan County communities offer ample waterfront experiences. Each downtown core (which feels like a single unit separated by a short bridge) is colorful, creative, and quirky. Many local eateries/breweries participate in what is known as the Social District - meaning that beverages can be purchased from one establishment and enjoyed in the common areas of another (while waiting on a table, perhaps). Boating and paddling outlets exist along the Kalamazoo waterways, and distinct beaches service both Douglas and Saugatuck (Douglas Beach and Oval Beach, respectively). Alternatively, another 2.5-mile sandy stretch sits just north of the collective at Saugatuck Dunes State Park.

Next, let's scoot 12 more miles northward (and ever so slightly inland) to the cultural haven of Holland . This Dutch-immigrant town, or rather, small city (many of the cute towns along Lake Michigan are technically cities) wears its European heritage on its sleeve. Traditional windmills, tulips galore (during the spring bloom, that is), local festivals, specialty shops, and even the general aesthetic of downtown (hued here and there with hints of orange) all mirror that of the Netherlands . But since this article is all about Lake Michigan, no visit to this Allegan/Ottawa County hub would be complete without following the north shore of Lake Macatawa to Holland State Park, the hearty Ottawa Beach, and the red-lighthouse-tipped pierhead.

Grand Haven

Grand Haven is one of Michigan's quintessential beach towns. For a wet and wild summer, join the fun-loving crowds at Grand Haven State Park, Grand Haven City Beach, or North Beach Park, or sneak off to one of the many smaller outlets in the surrounding area. If sunbathing isn't your thing, catch a ride on the Lakeshore Trolley, or take a stroll along the Grand River Boardwalk (complete with a musical fountain) and into the exciting and well-stocked downtown districts. Paddlers will appreciate the protected waters and maze-like routes through the Grand River bayous, anglers will have plenty of prime spots to cast a line along those same shores, and boaters let er' rip across the full expanse of the Great Lake.

Though it is the most populous city along Michigan's Lake Michigan shore, do not overlook Muskegon this summer. In terms of outdoor recreation, this seat of the namesake county has three state parks (Muskegon, Pj Hoffmaster, and Duck Lake), several subsidiary lakes, two paddle-worthy rivers, 65 miles of multi-use trails, and 26 cumulative miles of soft sandy beaches. Muskegon also specializes in extracurricular fun - thanks to Michigan's Adventure (the largest amusement/water park in the state), a robust nightlife (especially in the libation department), and a lively arts & entertainment scene, complete with live performance venues, ambitious outdoor sculptures, and countless street murals (be sure to download the art walk map to see them all).

Traverse City

Jumping well into the upper half of the Lower Peninsula, Traverse City teases the wild and wondrous landscape of northern Michigan. This Grand Traverse County gem is situated at the base of the West and East arms of Grand Traverse Bay (i.e. a substantial Lake Michigan inlet), which are divided by a long, vineyard-lined peninsula (aka, the "Traverse Wine Coast"). Sommeliers can tour the various award-winning wineries, and make pit stops at the many scenic lookouts, historic lighthouses, and lush parks along the way. Those open to a moderate, but unforgettable side adventure, can traverse the Traverse Highway for about 30 minutes to reach the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Shoreline - with its windswept, mountain-like formations and pristine beaches. Last but not least, consider timing your visit for the National Cherry Festival (June 29th-July 6th, 2024). Traverse City, after all, is known as the "Cherry Capital of the World."

As we continue our charge toward the tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, a stop in Charlevoix is a must (at least it was for Ernest Hemingway, who often summered here). The tapered site plan of this charming city accommodates a significant stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline, as well as the one-two punch of Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix . The beloved Michigan Beach Park sits equidistant from two other natural coastal attractions: Fisherman's Island State Park (to the west) and North Point Nature Preserve (to the east). When not on the water, be sure to check out the famous "mushroom houses" - 30 distinct properties designed by architect Earl Young, who utilized Northern Michigan stones and cedar-shake roofs to bring his earthy creations to life.

Mackinac Island

The geographical (and perhaps, emotional) pinnacle of our Lake Michigan East Coast road trip brings us to Mackinac Island . Yes, this slightly more than four-square-mile island does actually tilt into Lake Huron's domain, but given the magic of the region, and lack of clear demarcation between the two Great Lakes, I trust that readers will forgive the transgression. Park at Mackinaw City and take the ferry over to this car-free enclave, where you can travel about on foot, bike, or even a horse-drawn carriage. Explore the titular state park (which dominates the majority of the island), visit historic forts, play a few rounds of golf (mini, disc, or regular), embrace spa life, or simply surrender to the resort town's world-famous fudge. You can't go wrong on this idyllic and old-fashioned rock.

Parting Thoughts

The eastern shore of Lake Michigan is one of several substantial Great-Lake-shorelines under Michigan's rule, but it is a tough one to top. The "Sunset Coast" is saturated with paradisiacal beaches, replete with state parks, and blessed with unique small towns. There are always more nooks and crannies to explore along Michigan's slice of Lake Michigan, but these nine towns are some of the absolute best. Where will you find yourself this season?
