Marty Haggard’s tribute to his father, Merle Haggard

November 2, 2023, doors 6:00  show 8:00.

We are so excited to welcome Marty Haggard to Tomball, Texas to perform on the Main Street Crossing stage. What an honor it is to host you for a live concert with an artist up-close. Buy your tickets and read a little more about Marty Haggard below.

MARTY HAGGARD PERFORMS REAL COUNTRY MUSIC AND ALSO HONORS HIS LEGENDARY FATHER, MERLE HAGGARD. MARTY SHARES HIS DAD’S SONGS AND HIS OWN PERSONAL STORIES OF THE PAST.

Marty was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. Of course, everyone knows his Dad, Merle Haggard. Marty considers his dad the greatest singer/songwriter ever and I’m sure a lot of people agree with that. Growing up, Marty was able to travel with his dad and witness the writing and recording of all his great songs. He also had the opportunity to know many of the country greats, like Bob Wills, Lefty Frizzell, and Johnny Cash, just to name a few.

It’s obvious Marty was influenced by the legendary artists and their music while traveling with his dad. In 1979, Marty began touring with his own band, signing with Dimension Records in 1981. From 1983 to 1985, Marty toured with his dad, playing guitar and singing harmony. Marty signed with MTM Records in 1986 and released Trains Make Me Lonesome, which garnered him a nomination as best new male vocalist. Marty signed with Critique/BMG in 1995 and after some time decided to leave the Nashville lifestyle behind.

In 1999, Marty began writing and singing spiritual songs inspired by his life spent with his Grandma Haggard after his mom and dad were divorced. There were also many struggles growing up the son of such a famous father. For the next ten years, Marty traveled the country with his wife and son, not as a preacher, but just to sing and proclaim his love and personal relationship with Jesus. He still found time to go back to his roots and play country venues, also.

Marty’s love for his dad and his music eventually inspired him to begin a new  project, which he titled,  A Tribute to Merle Haggard “My Dad” . In 2010, he  recorded the first album of this project with a 15-song CD of Hag classics. This led to a tribute show in Branson, Mo, where he performed for two years. In 2011, Marty released   A Tribute to Merle Haggard “My Dad”, VolumeTwo . He then took the show on the road throughout the country, as well as Canada, Ireland, Scotland and England.  Marty now travels a little less, but still performs in many parts of the USA. As Marty’s song,  Apple,  proclaims, “the apple never falls too far from its tree”.

Merle Ronald Haggard is a country and Western music legend originating from California US. He’s a master of the guitar and fiddler, whilst his distinctive vocals are difficult not to sing along with.

In his early years, Haggard lived a turbulent lifestyle, committing ample minor offences and facing stints in various jails. Such hardship motivated the singer-songwriter to perform at local bars and after one of his influences - Lefty Frizzell - heard Haggard singing backstage at his concert, he insisted that Haggard must sing first; as his music was received welcomingly by the audience, Haggard decided to pursue a career in country-music.

After another spell behind bars, Haggard’s talents were acknowledged and he began recording with Tally Records, before progressing to work with Capitol, MCA, Epic and Curb later in his career.

Haggard achieved an abundance of number one positions on the US Country Albums chart with releases such as ‘Singing Doors’ (1966), ‘Branded Man/I Threw Away the Rose’ (1967), Sing Me Back Home (1968) and ‘Sasme Train, A Different Time’ (1969) during the earlier stages of his career. He attained many more through the 1970s and 1980s with albums like ‘Hag’ (1971), ‘It’s Not Love (But It’s Not Bad)’ (1972) and ‘It’s All in the Game’ (1984). Further, the country-legend topped the US Country Singles Chart and the Canada Country singles Chart with many hits such as ‘Mama Tried’ (1968), Workin’ Man Blues’ (1969) and ‘Going Where the Lonely Go’ (1982). Having released many tracks and albums over the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s, the longevity of Haggard’s career is a true testament to his timeless talents.

The Californian performed with the likes of Willie Nelson, George Jones and Leona Williams, and entertained large crowds at prestigious settings such as Wembley UK, ACL Moody Theatre Texas US and Las Vegas Hilton US. He won countless awards from the Academy of Country Music - the Top Male Vocalist (x 6), the Pioneer Award and in 2014, the Crystal Milestone Award - to name a few, and was honored as a BMI icon at the 54th BMI Pop awards and with a lifetime achievement award from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in December 2010.

Live reviews

If you are longing for the sound of good old country music, the kind that actually means something, the type in which musicians weave detailed instances of their lives and personality into a relatable sound then a Merle Haggard show is a safe bet.

He has been touring for years and has continually developed in experience and professionalism. His shows have been lauded by thousands all over the world for the simple reason: he knows what he is doing. His sets are wonderfully laid out in terms of song selection and band line up. He still plays the jiving and hilarious "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink". He slows it down with tracks like "Are the Good Times Really Over" and his marvelous cover of Townes Van Zandt "Pancho and Lefty" and even sprinkles in some of his newer material for good measure.

Merle's band is always spot on. At times Merle proves that they are just an indulgence as it is well known that he can hold the attention of the audience with just his mellow voice and splendid guitar playing, but they are an indulgence I would not want to do without. They are a group of fine country gentleman and ladies dressed nicely for the occasion. Their wardrobe is classy and traditional, something you might expect to find in a 1930s country swing band.

But despite their dress habits the question stands: can they play? Considering that they are performing alongside Merle Haggard is a dead give away. Merle not only picks the finest group of musicians to accompany him, he chooses a diverse range as well. You can hear everything from a harmonica to a steel guitar player. His lineup of course is not complete without back up singers and a couple of fiddle players. His touring troupe though large in number is never over the top, and it is carefully constructed to fit his simple yet thorough sound.

Excellent show by Merle and the Strangers. I have been a fan since college days in the 70s but never took the opportunity to see him perform. He played a good mix of songs from every stage of his career. His voice is still in very good form considering that he is approaching 80. He also plays a mean Fender Telecaster. Here's what he played, as best as I can remember and not necessarily in order:

Silver Wheels

Folsom Prison Blues (yes, really)

Daddy Frank

Sing Me Back Home

The Bottle Let Me Down

If We Make Through December

Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Star

Poncho and Lefty

Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink

That's The Way Love Goes

Un-Fairweather Friend (from new album w/ Willie Nelson)

Workin' Man's Blues

Fightin' Side Of Me

Okie From Muskogee

It was about a 90 minutes show so I definitely missed some songs he did. His son Noel opened with the Strangers with a pleasant six song set. I should also mention the tasty lead guitar played by his youngest son,Ben.

Merle was awesome, the Strangers were awesome, the Haggard kid that opened the show was awesome... too bad there were so many audience members ignoring the venue's request to NOT record the show, use flash photography, or have their phones out during the show in general... Kinda hard to pay attention to the stage when some asshole is firing off photo flashes right next to me and the asshole in front of me is holding his phone directly in my line of sight so he can record the concert. Merle was awesome, the Strangers were awesome, but the Missouri Theatre really let me down with how it treated the value of the show. When Merle Haggard rolls into your town, you show some damned respect. Missouri Theatre failed to do that for Merle, or for the concertgoers who came to see the show.

It was awesome! He still sounds great! He played a song off the up coming release he and Willie Nelson just finished up. To my surprise, based on the last time I saw him, he played for close 90 minutes. Anyone going to see Hag, have a good time and I hope he is as good for your show as he was for the Shawnee, OK show! One thing that put me and some other attendee's was the cost of his merchandise.

tracy-davis-7’s profile image

Merle was suffering from asthma during the concert. While he toughed it out and sang far better than I could ever do with that ailment, his voice was noticeably faint at times as he gasped for breath. The quality of his band and his songs still made the concert worthwhile and memorable.

Merle Haggard put on one Hell of a show would go again anytime. He was funny and can still sing better than all of the newer country artist that are out now.

History of haggard’s boxcar.

Saturday, May 9th, 2020 the Kern County Museum will be presenting the 4th Annual Haggard Boxcar Festival! The Festival is named after the childhood home of Merle Haggard, and of course, in honor of Haggard and all he contributed to Bakersfield and country music!

The history of the boxcar starts in 1935 when the Haggard’s moved to Bakersfield from Oklahoma . They purchased the boxcar as temporary living, until they built a permanent structure on their land. In 1937, Merle Haggard was born and then brought home to the now famous boxcar. In the late1950s they left the boxcar for their new home on the same property.

Over the decades the house became worn and fell into disrepair. In recent years ,a group called, “Citizens Preserving History” raised awareness and money with a “Save Hag’s Boxcar” campaign to move the boxcar here to the Kern County Museum. We give special thanks to the Cynthia Lake Charitable Trust for her generous endowment. Without her and Historical architect George Taylor Louden, we would not be able to enjoy “Hag’s Boxcar” and honor the Country Legend.

merle haggard tour 2023

Unless you were there in person, you missed it. But now we’ll all get the opportunity to see the tribute concert that transpired on April 6th, 2017, when a hefty list of musical talent all assembled at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville to pay tribute to the legendary Merle Haggard, who had passed away exactly a year to the day. The tribute happened on what would have been Haggard’s 80th birthday. Called Sing Me Back Home: The Music of Merle Haggard, it will feature 29 performances from the concert released as a 2 CD set of audio only, or a 2 CD/DVD combo with video of the event. It will be available on December 11th, and yes, it will make a good gift for any Hag fan, many of whom have been waiting over three years to be able to see this tribute. Portions of the concert did air on A&E on April 13th, but this will be the first time the full tribute will be available. The concert features performances by Alabama, Ben Haggard, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Bobby Bare, Buddy Miller, Chris Janson, Connie Smith, Dierks Bentley, Hank Williams Jr., Jake Owen, Jamey Johnson, John Anderson, John Mellencamp, Kacey Musgraves, Keith Richards, Kenny Chesney, Aaron Lewis, Loretta Lynn, Lucinda Williams, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Miranda Lambert, Rodney Crowell, Ronnie Dunn, Sheryl Crow, Tanya Tucker, The Avett Brothers, Toby Keith, Warren Haynes, and Willie Nelson. Like many of these major tribute shows, it was produced by Blackbird Presents. Don Was, Buddy Cannon, and Merle’s son Ben Haggard were the the musical directors for the event, and lead a star-studded house band as well as an assemblage of Merle’s backing band The Strangers behind the performers. Merle’s widow Theresa Haggard was also involved in the production and oversight. Though we don’t have a proper track list for the 2 CD’s or DVD at the moment, you can find the complete set list that was logged during the tribute show below. Expect some of the order to change, and one or two of the performances to not be present, and extras as part of the DVD package. Was hoping Teea Goens was on here she does a killer version of I Didn’t Mean To Love You.

' src=

To Marc: you’re absolutely right about Teea. Very few people can out do haggard especially his own song but her version is superior and I think haggard would’ve loved Her version as well.

' src=

What the heck are you talking about? Who needs Teea, when they have Sheryl Crow?! I mean, Sheryl can sing anything & everything, better than anyone, from Merle to Harold Reid, to Dolly. That’s it. Everyone else can go home now. Sheryl’s “got this”

Sad that Keith Whitley passed but grateful the tribute album was released years ago…

Amen, Marc. Amen.

' src=

Just because you like Sheryl, as I do too. Why be critical of another artist performing one of his songs. There were many good versions of his songs.

Musically speaking, i do not. She seems like a nice person.

You are missing the much bigger picture.

Trigger, Just saving both of us the time from commenting. Copied from the Barry Gibb article.

Me: Sheryl Crow….. again ugh!!!

Trigger: Can’t have a tribute album or event without her. It’s the law. Apparently.

I love Merle from 1983 to Today . I shopping in Amazon 2 cd and Dvd fantastic for Xmas for my 60 year in December.

' data-tf-not-load src=

There could be a Six Degrees of Sheryl Crow game for the roots music realm 🙂

' data-tf-not-load src=

“Can’t have a tribute album or event without her” According to who if you wouldn’t mind sharing, many thanks.

It’s possible I missed some…..

No way in this uber-pc landscape anyone is touching that song. Lol

' data-tf-not-load src=

If today’s thought police knew Merle sang that song, they’d make a bonfire of his records. Heck, I’m waiting for the woke crowd to drop Johnny Cash, for his a life-long affection for Dixie and his songs that showed respect for Robert E. Lee.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I see maybe one decent cd out of all that.

“I see maybe one decent cd out of all that. ” I agree although we probably have differences of opinions on what should be on the one CD. After looking through the list provided, there are many I would not include. There is one whose concert we went to in the past; said then and there I would NEVER waste my time or money again. He was a huge disappointment.

I grew up on his music as our parents always had music playing in our home. I don’t like or listen to anything they try and pass off as country, stopped listening quite some time ago. I wish there had been different singers chosen to be included; my opinion is there are some who could and would have done the songs properly.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Really looking forward to Keith Richards doing Sing Me Back Home and Jamey Johnson doing Kern River. Some look better than others, but that’s the way it goes with tribute performances.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Definitely got excited when I saw it’s the Avett brothers covering Mama Tried

' data-tf-not-load src=

Moar Merle, always a good thing.

I like Sheryl Crow because she’s musical and somebody you imagine getting a little drunk with and having a tussle in an expensive hotel. I don’t see the problem.

Besides, it’s not like Merle needs a tribute. It’s like saying we need a “tribute” to the guys on Mt. Rushmore.

Merle is us.

' data-tf-not-load src=

there is no one on this planet that can take over where Merle left off. But I think it’s wonderful that all these wonderful people want to pay tribute to this great man by singing his music. it shows by how much they honor and respected him and loved him as I have and will always. He wrote songs for the people that he loved the working man, the people of all walks of life. That struggled to keep families together, no matter what it took. He loved singing for his fans more than anyone would ever know. He had a big heart and let it shine. We were the best friends to each other for almost 40 years and we had no secrets about his or my life on how much we loved each other. I miss him more than anything in my life. I’m not convinced a tribute concert (or album) is ever anything but a money grab. Sorry to burst any bubbles. That said, the idea of Keith Richards singing “Reasons to Quit” is genius.

Where can I preorder The Merle Haggard Tribute Concert in 2 DVDS.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Well, at least we’re getting a few Ben Haggard songs.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Would love the Loretta concert from 2029 to also get released.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I attended this concert and it was amazing. Humbling to see so many country icons and big names make the effort to attend to sing one song. A testament to Hag’s wide influence. A live CD is never as good as the show itself, but this should have some keepers on it.

' data-tf-not-load src=

The only thing that I don’t like about this is that the DVD doesn’t have the same order as the actual concert was in person.

Phil Vassar and Jeffrey Steele Share New Collab 'Hillbillies in Hollywood': 'It's a Real Brotherhood' (Exclusive)

Vassar and Steele's East and West coast upbringings and shared musical influences come together on one nostalgic track

merle haggard tour 2023

Phill Vassar and Jeffrey Steele have officially teamed up for the first time on the new track “ Hillbillies in Hollywood .”

The new single, which PEOPLE is premiering exclusively, is the perfect combination of Vassar and Steele’s East and West coast upbringings and their shared musical influences coming together in one nostalgic track.

Vassar tells PEOPLE that the collaboration between him and Steele is something that they’ve both talked about doing for a long time.

“Jeffrey and I have been longtime friends and I have an enormous amount of respect for his talent as a singer-songwriter,” Vassar says. “He grew up on the West Coast, me on the East, and the song came out of a conversation about us being in bands and playing clubs all around the country. We've had similar paths despite having different backgrounds.”

Vassar also explains that he and Steele, both 62, talked a lot about their own careers and shared musical influences like The Eagles , Linda Ronstadt , Queen and the late Merle Haggard . “I was playing The Bayou in DC, while he was playing The Troubadour or somewhere else on the LA scene,” Vassar recalls. “Jefferey and I met in the late '80s and bonded right away — it's a real brotherhood."

Courtesy of Adkins Entertainment

“Hillbillies in Hollywood” is also Vassar’s first release since suffering a major heart attack in 2023, which served as an important wake-up call for the "Carlene" singer.

“When you go through something as life-changing as a heart attack, you become more introspective and sentimental," the country star explains. “I want to put out music that reflects that."

Vassar also confirms that he has plenty of plans for touring and new music in 2024 and says that he feels “better than I have in years.”
