Regal City of Lakes and Palaces

udaipur tourist places timings

Udaipur, Rajasthan's "white city", is often called the most romantic city in India because of its famed lakes and palaces. Therefore, it's only natural that they feature prominently in the top things to do in Udaipur. Experiencing Udaipur is all about reliving royalty and appreciating the city's regal beauty.

Check out these places to see around Udaipur too. There are many interesting day trips and side trips to go on. If you don't mind the heat, try and catch Udaipur's biggest festival, Gangaur, in March or April (it happens a couple of weeks after Holi each year). The Mewar Festival is held alongside it and celebrates the region's culture.

Explore the City Palace Complex

Elena Odareeva/Getty Images

How did Rajasthan's royal rulers survive after India became a democracy and their states merged into the Union of India? They converted their palaces into hotels and tourist attractions in order to generate an income. Udaipur's City Palace Complex , belonging to the Mewar royal family, really sets the standard as far as such heritage tourism is concerned. This all-encompassing destination incorporates two authentic palace hotels (see below) and the City Palace Museum . Plus, a collection of vintage cars and Jag Mandir, a pleasure palace on an island in the middle of Lake Pichola. It's the largest palace complex in Rajasthan.

Wander Through Bagore Ki Haveli

Bagore Ki Haveli provides a further fascinating look into the lifestyle of the royal family and culture of the region. This sprawling mansion, built in the 18th century on the edge of Lake Pichola at Gangaur Ghat (where you can sit by the water), was once the residence of the Prime Minister of Mewar. It was converted to a museum after five years of restoration work in the late 1980s and is a joy to wander through. Inside there are more than 100 rooms, courtyards, and terraces, many with beautiful frescoes and fine mirror work. Royal paintings, costumes of the kings, personal items, and traditional Rajasthani arts and crafts are on display. There's also a puppet gallery and turban collection with the world's biggest turban. The Haveli is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A folk dance performance and puppet show is held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Boat on Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake

Zzvet/Getty Images

Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake (to the north of Lake Pichola and connected by a canal) are the most popular of Udaipur's man-made lakes. A boat ride on Lake Pichola gives a whole new perspective on the city, especially the City Palace Complex. There are a couple of options, depending on what you want to see and how much you're prepared to spend. To visit Jagmandir Island, you'll need to take one of the boats that depart from Rameshwar Ghat in the City Palace gardens (a small fee is payable to enter the City Palace if you're not staying at a hotel there). Tickets cost 500 rupees per person for the regular boat ride during the day, and 800 rupees per person for the sunset boat ride. Cheaper public boat rides depart from the jetty at Lal Ghat. A lesser-known option is to get a boat from Dudh Talai adjacent to Lake Pichola. You can explore Fateh Sagar Lake by renting a boat from the bottom of Moti Magri (Pearl Hill).

Soak Up the View from a Rooftop

pawopa3336/Getty Images

The numerous rooftop restaurants on Lal Ghat, Gangaur Ghat and Hanuman Ghat provide a fabulous panorama of Lake Pichola. For something special, including a superb view of the the City Palace, head to Upre by 1559 A.D. atop the Lake Pichola Hotel near Hanuman Ghat. On the other side of the lake, Sun and Moon Restaurant on the rooftop of Hotel Udai Niwas at Gangaur Ghat is sought-after for its view. At Lal Ghat, try the rooftop restaurant at Jaiwana Haveli or Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel .

Watch the Sunset at Ambrai Ghat

Udaipur has many vantage points for photography but arguably the best one is Ambrai Ghat, especially at sunset. It's located directly opposite the City Palace and also fronts the Lake Palace hotel, so you have an unsurpassed view of both as their lights are turned on. To get there, head to the Hanuman Ghat area and keep walking along the road that runs parallel to Lake Pichola as far as you can, past the Amet Haveli hotel and Ambrai restaurant. Do be aware that Ambrai Ghat is a popular local hangout for couples. (Of course, locals know the most romantic spot with the best views in the city!)

Visit Jagdish Temple

This imposing white Hindu temple, with intricate architecture and carvings, is an unmissable landmark in the Lal Ghat area near the entrance to the City Palace. It was built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1961 and houses a black stone idol of Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who's regarded as the preserver of the universe in Hinduism. The highlight here is the evocative aarti (worship ceremony) every sunrise and sunset.

Take a Heritage Walking Tour

TkKurikawa/Getty Images

A heritage walk through the streets of Udaipur is a great way to immerse yourself in the City of Lakes and Palaces. The Walk Down Memory Lane tour conducted by Walk and Pedal is one of the best. You'll get to see goldsmiths at work, witness temple rituals, visit quaint shops selling everything from shoes to books, and enjoy panoramic city views. Also check out the dawn and dusk tours conducted by Vintage Walking Tours . In addition, this insightful Udaipur Heritage Walk offered by Virasat Experiences is recommended for engaging with local artisans. It provides an opportunity to meet communities that make jewelry, pottery, and bamboo craft. You'll learn about local traditions, customs, and beliefs too.

Stay at an Authentic Palace Hotel

Blaine Harrington III/Getty Images

Udaipur's mystical Lake Palace hotel appears to float in the middle of Lake Pichola. It was built by the Maharanas of Mewar as a pleasure palace in the 18th century. The royal family restored and converted it into a palace hotel in 1963, and then leased it out to the luxury Taj hotel group in 1971, as a way to maintain it. A further restoration was undertaken in 2000, making the property one of the finest heritage hotels in India. It has even had a Hollywood moment when scenes from the famous James Bond Octopussy movie were filmed there. The only way to visit the hotel is to stay at it, so splurge and treat yourself to at least one night of indulgence! The Taj group recently took over the management of the Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel , inside the City Palace Complex, too. The other option for an authentic palace stay is the Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel . It also features in Octopussy.

Sample Traditional Mewari Cuisine

RakeshPicholiya/Getty Images

The Rajput rulers of the Mewar region, who founded Udaipur, were avid hunters. Meat-based dishes are therefore a feature of Mewari-cuisine, in contrast to predominantly vegetarian Rajasthani food. Laal maas (red mutton curry) is an iconic Mewari dish that's fiery hot. Apparently, the royal cooks spiced it up to hide the aroma of the game meat that was used at the time. The dish has a prominent place on the menus of restaurants that serve Mewari food in Udaipur including Hari Ghar , Khamma Ghani , Upre , Ambrai , and Paantya at the City Palace. In addition, the Bedla family serve recipes that have been handed down over generations at their heritage restaurant Royal Repast , located in their home.

Take an Indian Cooking Class

Corey O'Hara/Getty Images

Udaipur is a fantastic place to expand your culinary skills by taking an Indian cooking lesson. You'll learn all about the different spices and secrets to preparing Indian food. Sashi's cooking classes are among the most popular. She has a reputation for being a friendly and lively teacher, and she conducts introductory classes twice a day with her son at her place at Gangaur Ghat. Mamta's cooking classes are recommended too. She offers four different menus, ranging from basic to super deluxe. The classes take place for lunch and dinner daily near Chandpole. Alternatively, Sushma provides cooking classes at the Krishna Niwas Guesthouse at Lal Ghat. You can choose the individual dishes you want to prepare. The extensive options include north and south Indian dishes, Rajasthani classics, and desserts.

Get a Dose of Culture and Shop at Shilpgram

Olmoroz/Getty Images

Shilpgram (meaning "craftsmen's village") is a rural arts and crafts complex, located on the outskirts of Udaipur. It was set up by the government in 1986 to showcase rural life and traditions from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa. The complex has huts from each of the states, incorporating their distinctive architectural features. Artisans also sell their wares and perform folk dances. Horse rides and camel rides are offered as well. The complex really comes alive during the 10-day Shilpgram Arts & Crafts Fair in late December.

Buy Art or Make Your Own

Atlantide Phototravel/Getty Images

Udaipur is renowned for its traditional art, particularly the colorful miniature paintings that originated there in the 16th century. A recommended place to buy them is Gothwal Art near Gangaur Ghat. The lovely owners of this gallery are artists themselves and prices are very reasonable. It's possible to learn the technique by participating in a workshop, such as the ones offered by Vedic Walks . Jal Sanjhi is another rare 200 year-old art form that can be learned in this painting demonstration . It involves painting on water and is a tribute to Lord Krishna. If you're interested in other types of art and handicrafts, this Spirit of Art tour comprises visits to a block printing center and book binding shop, painting demonstration, and sword making demonstration.

Give Some Love to Rescued Street Animals

Animal Aid Unlimited

Animal Aid Unlimited runs one of India's busiest street animal rescue services and hospitals. More than 75,000 animals have been treated there since the organization was founded in 2002. The sanctuary is home to about 150 animals including cows, donkeys, dogs, and cats. It's a happy place that encourages and welcomes visitors. You'll be able to play with and comfort the animals, and receive a whole lot of love back from them. Tours take place throughout the day at the following times: 10.30 a.m., noon, 2.30 p.m., and 3.30 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are also available.

Ride Around Udaipur on a Bicycle

Wade Andrew/Getty Images

Feeling energetic? The Art of Bicycle Trips introduced bicycle tours in Udaipur in 2013 and they've become a popular way of seeing the city. Their three-hour lakeside city loop will take you through the countryside past the major lakes (Pichola, Fateh Sagar and Badi), mountains and small rural hamlets. On the way, you'll be able to spot various birds and animals. The tour runs daily from 7.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. and costs 2,000 rupees per person.

See the Cenotaphs of the Royal Family

prill/Getty Images

Off-the-beaten-track yet just east of the city center, the Ahar cenotaphs honor deceased members of the Mewar royal family. There are 372 white marble cenotaphs that have been constructed over centuries at the place where the bodies were cremated. About 20 of them belong to past kings and hold great significance. The site also has a holy step well, and small archeological museum that's dedicated to ancient settlers of the area.

Relax in Udaipur's Regal Garden

Guillaume CHANSON/Getty Images

Continue tracing the heritage of the Mewar royal family at Saheliyon ki Bari (Courtyard of Maidens), which was built by Maharana Sangram Singh -- popularly known as Rana Sanga -- next to Fateh Sagar Lake in the 18th century. This elegant garden served as a recreation space for the royal ladies. It's filled with a lotus ponds, sculptures, marble pavilions, fountains, trees, and more than 100 rose bushes. The impressive cascading rain fountains were added by Maharana Bhupal Singh in the late 19th century and imported from England. These days, the garden attracts many local families, and young canoodling couples who aim to get privacy away from prying eyes.

Admire the View from Monsoon Palace

The Monsoon Palace (also known as Sajjan Garh) can be seen from Udaipur, perched high on a hill above the city. As its name suggests, it was a favored destination of the royal family during the monsoon season. The palace belonged to the Mewar royal family until it was placed in government hands. Despite its dilapidated condition, it's a popular sunset spot due to its unsurpassed view over Udaipur. Those who are familiar with James Bond's Octopussy movie will also recognize the palace as the home of the principal villain, Kamal Khan. The drive to the palace takes around 30 minutes and passes through Sajjan Garh Wildlife Sanctuary Biological Park. Auto rickshaws aren't allowed to enter the park. So, it's best to rent a car or take the special minivan that departs from the entrance to Bagore ki Haveli at 5 p.m. daily.

Get Wild at Sajjangarh Biological Park

Veena Nair/Getty Images

Sajjangarh Biological Park surrounds the Monsoon Palace and can be visited on the way. The main attractions are trekking trails and a zoo. As far as zoos in India go, it's not bad, with spacious enclosures spread over a wide area. Electric golf carts can be rented to see all of it at a cost of 50 rupees per person, or 400 rupees for a private cart. There are about 20 types of animals and reptiles including lions, tigers, leopards, sloth bear, deer, ostrich, porcupines and turtles. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Tuesdays. Entry tickets cost 35 rupees per person for Indians and 300 rupees for foreigners. Do be aware that many of the animals sleep during the day, so it's best to visit after 4 p.m. You'll probably want to give it a miss if you don't have children though.

Ride the Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway

Nicole Silvestri/Getty Images

Red cable cars ferry sightseers on short trips (five minutes one-way) up the hill from Deen Dayal Park at Dudh Talai to Karni Mata temple . There's a viewing platform there, and it's another notable location for seeing the sunset over the city. Do be aware that the line and waiting time to buy tickets can be lengthy. Tickets cost about 100 rupees, round trip, for adults. There's an option to pay more to skip the line, which is highly recommended.

Day 1 of Udaipur Itinerary for 4 Days

9 am: breakfast @ cafe la comida.

Some travelers choose a package at a hotel that includes breakfast. If you’re one of them, you’re, of course, sorted. If you are like us who don’t want to limit themselves, you’re in for a treat 🙂

Cafe La Comida , right in the heart of the old city, is a great place to have a delicious breakfast. With the warm and welcoming ambiance, charming setting, prompt service, and good food – you are sure to come back!

10 am: Jagdish Temple

jagdish temple udaipur rajasthan

Just 120 meters from Cafe La Comida, Jagdish Temple is a beautiful Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Apart from being one of the holiest places in Udaipur, the temple is a work of art.

Constructed in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Sing, the erstwhile ruler of Udaipur, the temple showcases stunning Indo-Aryan architecture.

The main shrine houses the idol of Lord Vishnu. Carved out of a single piece of black stone, the idol is a sight to behold.

The main shrine is circumscribed by four smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Sun God, Goddess Shakti, and Lord Shiva. You should walk around the inner sanctum (in a clockwise direction) to seek the blessings of other Gods.

Once you’ve got the blessings, give yourself enough time to admire the intricate carvings and paintings that adorn the temple.

Note: There are a few religious customs that need to be followed when visiting the temples in India viz. dress conservatively, cover your head (carry a stole or shawl), and remove your shoes.

11 am: City Palace

city palace udaipur rajasthan

One of the largest palace complexes in Rajasthan, City Palace is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Udaipur. The construction of this masterpiece was initiated by Maharaja Udai Singh II in 1553 and was carried on by his successors over a period of 400 years.

The palace exquisitely combines Medieval, European, and Chinese architecture. The canary yellow exteriors showcase granite and marble work whereas interiors are intricately embellished with marble, mirrors, murals, wall paintings, silver, colored glass, and inlay.

The palace complex houses many small palaces and other beautiful structures. Suraj Gokhda, Ganesh Chowk, Mor Chowk, Rajya Angan, Dilkhush Mahal, Badi Chitrashali Chowk, Zenana Mahal, Surya Chopar, Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal, Krishna Vilas, Bhim Vilas, Amar Vilas, Rang Bhawan, Laxmi Vilas Chowk, Badi Mahal, Manak Mahal, and City Palace Museum are some of the notable attractions inside the complex.

Fateh Prakash Palace and Shiv Niwas Palace have been converted into heritage hotels. Shambhu Niwas is the present home of the royal family.

Badi Pol, Tripolia, and Hathi Pol are the gateways or entry points to the magnificent City Palace.

The palace is not only known for its architectural grandeur but also for its beautiful setting. It is located on the banks of Lake Pichola and is surrounded by majestic Aravalli hills. The highest point of the palace, Amar Vilas offers breathtaking views over Lake Pichola, its islands, and surrounding mountains.

City Palace Museum Timings: 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, all seven days a week. Entrance Tickets: INR 300 (USD 3.80) per adult and INR 100 (USD 1.27) per child aged 5 to 17 years.

Note: Mewar Sound and Light Show takes place at the Manek Chowk in City Palace every evening and the timings change with the season. The ticket prices depend upon the seating option you choose. It’s a great show if you want to know the history of Mewar. We skipped it as we had visited City Palace with a registered guide who had already narrated the stories of Mewar to us.

2 pm: Lunch @ Paantya Restaurant

It’s time for lunch! We dined at Paantya, a multi-cuisine restaurant at Shiv Niwas Palace , and loved it to the core. From the beautiful ambiance, tasty food, and wonderful hospitality to charming interiors, royal vibes, and great views – Paantya surpasses our expectations.

Try their Mewari cuisine.

4 pm: Lake Pichola: Boat Ride & Jag Mandir

boat ride lake pichola udaipur rajasthan

A trip to Udaipur is incomplete without a boat ride on Lake Pichola. It’s a must!

The boat ride on the lake is mesmerizing, no matter what time of day it is. However, travelers endorse the sunset boat cruise as the captivating views of the golden hour from the lake are to die for.

There are four islands viz. Jag Niwas , Jag Mandir , Mohan Mandir , and Arsi Vilas on the lake. Jag Niwas has now turned into a 5-star hotel, Taj Lake Palace , and entry is only allowed to the hotel guests. Jag Mandir or Lake Garden Palace was used as a summer retreat by the royal family. Mohan Mandir and Arsi Vilas are two simple medieval structures that you can witness from the boat.

The boat ride starts from Rameshwar Ghat and includes a visit to Jag Mandir, one of the four islands on the lake. There’s not much to see on Jag Mandir. There’s a restaurant, the Darikhana , which is super expensive and the food is average. You at most need half an hour or so to admire the beautiful garden courtyard and stone carvings.

Boat Rides Timings: 10 am to 5 pm

Tickets: INR 400 (USD 5.07) per adult and INR 200 (USD 2.53) per child from 10 am to 2 pm; INR 700 (USD 8.87) per adult and INR 400 (USD 5.07) per child from 3 pm to 5 pm. So, you need to pay double the price if a sunset boat ride is what you crave!

6 pm: Tea, Coffee, and Snacks @ Brew Villa

Brew Villa is one of the best cafes in Udaipur. With overwhelming options on the menu, delightful ambiance, great prices, excellent service, and not to mention, central location – the cafe and restro comes highly recommended.

7 pm: Dharohar Dance Show @ Bagore Ki Haveli

dharohar folk dance show bagore ki haveli udaipur rajasthan

If you do only one thing in Udaipur, let it be the Dharohar Folk Dance Show at Bagore ki Haveli.

This traditional Rajasthani folk dance and music show bedazzles its audience. The women dressed in colorful Rajasthani folk costumes perform various dance forms of Rajasthan viz. Chari Dance, Terha Taal Dance, Gorbandh Dance, Ghoomar Dance, and Bhavai Dance. From skillfully balancing the earthen pots or lit brass pots on their head to dancing on broken glass to twirling in a circle at high speed – the finesse with which the artists carry out the show is amazing. I feel great respect and admiration for them.

Apart from various dances, you get a chance to see Rajasthan’s famous string puppet art. The puppet show brings smiles to the faces of little ones.

Show Timings: 7 pm to 8 pm and 8 pm to 9 pm

Tickets: INR 100 (USD 1.27) per adult and INR 50 (USD 0.63) per child for Indian nationals; INR 200 (USD 2.53) per adult and INR 50 (USD 0.63) per child for foreign nationals; and INR 100 (USD 1.27) for a camera

Note: You can buy the tickets online or from the ticket counter. The seats fill out fast so it’s recommended to book the tickets in advance.

8:30 pm: Dinner @ Ambrai Restaurant

Now that you’ve enjoyed the cultural extravaganza, it’s time to relish the food extravaganza.

Set on the banks of Lake Pichola, Ambrai overlooks the imposing City Palace, the famous Taj Lake Palace, and Gangaur Ghat. The views are mesmerizing, especially at night when the lake shimmers with the city lights reflecting on the water.

The restaurant serves multi-cuisine delicacies. The food is good, however, the view adds to the entire experience.

Note: It’s a good idea to reserve a table a day before your visit to avoid any disappointment.

11 am: Chittorgarh Fort

chittorgarh fort udaipur rajasthan

One of the largest forts in India, Chittorgarh is located just about 112 km away from Udaipur and makes for a fascinating day trip. It was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2013 along with five other forts in Rajasthan viz. Kumbhalgarh , Jaisalmer , Ranthambhore , Gagaron , and Amber .

Built in the 7th century, the fort is mostly in ruins but looks majestic. It echoes the tales of pride, heroism, sacrifice, romance, and spirit of Rajputs. No wonder, it’s called the Pride of Rajasthan .

Guarded by 7 huge gates namely Padan Pol , Bhairon Pol , Hanuman Pol , Jorla Pol , Ganesh Pol , Laxman Pol , and Ram Pol , the fort houses Vijay Stambh , Kirti Stambh , Gaumukh Kund , Rana Kumbha Palace , Padmini Palace , Ratan Singh Palace , Shiva Temple , Meera Temple , Kalika Mata Temple , Fateh Prakash Palace Museum , and Jain Temples .

Chittaur witnessed many dramatic and tragic events, the most notable being the war waged by Alladin Khilji . You’d know the story if you’ve seen Padmavat , an Indian period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Chittorgarh with its impressive palace complexes, massive gates, and historic temples doesn’t cease to amaze its visitors.

1 pm: Lunch @ Gangour Restaurant

Gangour Restaurant is one of the best restaurants near Chittorgarh. It serves authentic and traditional Rajasthani food at great prices. The owner and the staff of the restaurant are friendly and welcoming. The service is surprisingly efficient.

The must-try dishes are Ker Sangri, Papad ki Sabzi, Gatte ki Sabzi, Kadhi, Dal Bati Churma, and Bajre ki Roti.

4:30 pm: Indian Tea @ Sigdi Chai

You can’t visit Udaipur and not taste the famous sigdi chai at Sigdi Chai . Also known as tandoori chai, sigdi chai is made by placing an earthen cup (kulhad) in a burning hot tandoor with the help of iron tongs and waiting till it’s red hot.

Then it’s taken out and masala tea is poured into it and let it sizzle and froth so as to add a smokey flavor to it. At last, the tea is poured into a fresh clay cup and served.

6 pm: Maharana Pratap Samarak

maharana pratap memorial moti magri udaipur rajasthan

Located on the top of Moti Magri (Pearl Hill), Maharana Pratap Memorial is a beautiful tribute to one of the greatest warriors in Indian history, Maharana Pratap. The memorial commemorates the 16th-century battle of Haldighati.

You can walk uphill (about 1 km) from the main gate just across the Fatehsagar Lake to the memorial or buy a ticket for a vehicle that costs INR 150 (USD 1.90).

If you choose to walk like us, take the steps. You’ll witness the statutes of Maharana Pratap’s compeers viz. Rana Punja Bhil , Bhama Shah , Jhala Man Singh , Hakim Khan Sur , and others before you reach a colossal (11 feet high and weighing 70 tonnes) bronze statue of Maharana Pratap riding his beloved horse, Chetak. The statue was built by Maharana Bhagwat Singh in 1948.

Don’t forget to enjoy the views over Fatehsagar Lake from here.

Also, there’s a well-managed museum on the premises known for its vast collection of paintings that depict the rich history of Mewar. You’ll find a lot of instances of Kumbhalgarh, Chittorgarh, and Haldighati.

It was later used as a hunting lodge by the royal family. Owing to its strategic location, the palace became a viewpoint for the royals to watch the clouds, scudding across the sky during monsoon and thus, the name.

The palace is also famous for being the filming location for the 1983 James Bond movie Octopussy.

kumbhalgarh fort rajasthan

One of the most important forts in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kumbhalgarh is famed for its wall. Yes, the Fort Wall is recognized as the second-longest wall in the world (the Great Wall of China enjoys the first spot) and is known as the Great Wall of India .

The fort is also known for being the birthplace of the legendary king of Mewar, Maharana Pratap.

The fort remains almost invincible (it’s knocked down by invaders only once during its lifetime) because of its strategic location, well-thought-out architecture, and smart defense strategy.

Enveloped by 13 mountain peaks, the fort is guarded by an imposing 36 km long and 15 feet wide wall, seven soaring gates, and loads of rounded bastions and watchtowers. The fort is so big that it holds up to 360 Hindu and Jain temples.

The sprawling fort complex echoes the stories of its rich and enduring past. Kumbha Palace , Badal Mahal , Ganesha Temple , Neel Kanth Mahadeva Temple (houses 6 feet tall Shivlinga), and Mammadev Temple are some of the important attractions to explore inside the fort complex. And you can’t miss the bird’s eye view from the top of the fort.

The fort is surrounded by the huge Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary which is famous for its varied wildlife. You can book a morning or evening jeep safari if you’ve time.

Note: We totally recommend hiring a government-authorized tour guide if you wish to have a detailed visit and want to learn more about the fort’s remarkable history. Also, be prepared for an arduous uphill walk.

4 pm: Ranakpur Jain Temple

ranakpur jain temple

One of the most beautiful temples in India, Ranakpur Jain Temple is the epitome of architectural genius. Also, the temple is an oasis of spirituality and serenity. It holds a special significance for the followers of  Jainism and thus, is counted among the five major Jain pilgrimage sites.

Legend has it that a local Jain businessman and the finance minister of Rana Kumbha (then ruler of Udaipur), Seth Dharna Shah started the construction of this temple in 1446 followed by a divine vision.

It took over 50 years and two thousand seven hundred and eighty-five workers to complete this architectural marvel.

The temple complex hosts 3 shrines viz. Chaumukha Temple , Neminath Temple , and  Parshawanath Temple .

Chaumukha Temple is the main temple. Shaped as a celestial vehicle (Nalinigulm Vimana), Chaumukha Temple is dedicated to the first Tirthankara Adinatha . It’s intricately carved from white marble and over 1444 pillars hold the temple together. And surprisingly each pillar is individually carved. No two pillars are the same!

Don’t miss to look up. The ceilings are gorgeously carved!

Another remarkable feature of Chaumukha is the idol of Bhagwan Sri Parshvanath with 1008 hooded cobras. It’s carved out of a single slab of marble.

PS: If a pujari (priest) offers to provide a tour of the temple or say a prayer for you, you must pay them a decent amount as a donation.

Timings: Ranakpur Jain Temple is open all days from 6:30 am to 8 pm but tourists are allowed to enter between 12 pm to 5 pm.

Entrance Fee: There’s no entry fee, but you’ll have to pay INR 100 (USD 1.27) for each camera or mobile phone that you are taking inside the temple premises. Please be aware that photography of idols is prohibited.

Audio Guide Service is available at a fee of INR 200 (USD 2.53) which is optional for Indian citizens and compulsory for foreigners.

Note: There are strict rules that need to be followed before you enter the temple. Dress modestly. No bare shoulders and legs. Use a scarf (available at the ticket counter) to cover your shoulders. Leather articles like belts, wallets, handbags, watches, and of course shoes are not allowed. You can store your belongings in a rented locker.

8 pm: Dinner @ Khamma Ghani

What better way to end your trip to Udaipur than relishing authentic Rajasthani food at Khamma Ghani , a restaurant that’s famous for its ideal location (ah, the views!), warm hospitality, nice ambiance, and tasty food. We tried their laal maas, mirchi ka salan, gatta curry, and mewari khichdi.

We spent a night in Kumbhalgarh at The Aodhi and explored Ranakpur Jain Temple the next day morning and then continued our journey to Jodhpur. If you are exploring Udaipur as a part of your Rajasthan Itinerary , you can easily explore all the major attractions viz. Eklingji , Shrinathji Temple in Nathdwara , Haldighati , Maharana Pratap Museum , Kumbhalgarh Fort , and Ranakpur Jain Temple while traveling between Udaipur and Jodhpur.

9 thoughts on “The Best Udaipur Itinerary for 4 Days”

I loved Udaipur when I visited the city a few years ago. The City Palace is gorgeous and I loved the sunrise over the lake. This is a fantastic itinerary to take in the best of the city.

Great post! This looks like a really good 4 day itinerary that covers so many amazing sights. I’ve love to visit here one day.

Wonderful blog. Do you have recommendations for tour guides to the Chittorgarh Fort?

Thanks for stopping by. Here’s a list of government-approved local guides for Chittorgarh .

Very nice Itinerary including the timings. Did you carry out excursions yourself or your hired local guides? If yes, it will be good to provide their contact information.

Hey Rajesh,

Thank you for the kind words on the itinerary! We hired a chauffeur-driven car for our trip through Rajasthan, which eventually became a fantastic decision. Our driver, a local from Udaipur, knew the area well. He doubled as a guide, offering invaluable local insights and tips throughout our journey, adding a personal and authentic touch to our experience. I have the driver’s contact number, though his name escapes me at the moment. However, I strongly suggest hiring a local driver-guide for a more immersive and enjoyable trip in Rajasthan. I can’t share his contact number publicly for privacy and security reasons, so I’m mailing it to you.

Loved this blog!! Really helped me with the whole itinerary around my 3 day trip (of course had to drop a few places here). I would also love to get the number of the driver-guide along with his charges (on what he charged you).

Thanks again for the whole effort! 🙂

Many thanks for this great itinerary. We are travelling next January so will use a lot of your tips! Do you know if the Ahar Centotaphs are still open. I have read that they may be closed to the public now.

You’re very welcome! I’m glad you found the itinerary helpful. As far as I know, the Ahar Cenotaphs are still open to the public. However, I recommend giving them a call to confirm before your visit. I found this number online: 02942470004, but I’m not sure if it’s still active. Enjoy your trip in January!

Shilpgram Udaipur (The Craft Village), Situated 3 kms west of Udaipur is the Rural Arts and Crafts Complex. Spread over an undulating terrain of 130 bighas (70 Acres) of land and surrounded by the Aravallies, the Rural Arts and Crafts Complex is conceived as a living enthnographic museum to depict the lifestyles of the folk and tribal people of the West Zone. Within this complex, huts of the member states are constructed incorporating traditional architectural features of different geographical and ethnic groups residing within the West Zone of India comprising of five Federal States.

One of the important objectives of Shilpgram is to increase awareness and knowledge of rural life and crafts, specifically, for the younger generation. Special emphasis is laid on workshops for children on arts, crafts, theatre and music.

The traditional village life to a considerable extent is self-contained and self-sufficient with a potter, carpenter, blacksmith and often a weaver living alongside one another nourishing and husbanding a series of transactions. To highlight these complex yet simple relationships, these huts are constructed in an interlocking occupational theme vested with its own internal dynamism.

The Centre's Rural Arts and Crafts Complex adopts this cellular approach such that each individual hut is at once an organic entity and at the same time nourishing and husbanding a series of such transactions.

In this integrated pattern are 5 huts from Rajasthan, representing weaver's community from Marwar. There are 2 huts named after the two sand bound villages of Rama and Sam from the desert region of western Rajasthan. From the hilly region of Mewar, is a potter's hut from the village Dhol, 70 kms west of Udaipur. Two huts represent the tribal farmer communities of the Bhil and the Sehariyas of the Southern regions of Rajasthan.

There are 7 representative huts from the state of Gujarat. A cluster of six huts from Banni area and one from Bhujodi have been selected from the arid wastelands of Kutch. the Banni cluster consists of two huts each of the Rebari, Harijan and Muslim communities famous for their weaving, embroidery, bead & mirrorwork, wood work and rogar work. Equally well known for its valiant horses, Lambdia village near Poshina in North Gujarat is represented with a potter's hut. Adjoining to the Lambdia potter's workshop at the Shilpgram is the weaver's hut from Vasedi village in Chota Udaipur area in western Gujarat. Two huts represent the Dang and Rathwa tribal farmer communities of southern Gujarat. In addition to these, there is an ornately carved wooden house from Pethapur near Gandhinagar.

These huts are: Banni Huts, Bhujodi Hut, Brahmin Hut, Bunkar Hut, Christian Hut, Craft & Culture, Dang Hut, Dhol Hut, Fisherman's Hut, Garasia Hut, Gond Hut, Huts And Haats, Kolhapur Hut, Koli Hut, Kulumbi, Kumbhi Hut, Lambdia Hut, Madia Hut, Meena Waas, Pethapur Haveli, Potter’s Hut, Rama Hut, Rathwa Hut, Saharia Hut, Sam Hut, Sculpture Park, The Chaupal Museum, The Gol Museum, The Kothi Collection, The Tribal Museum, Vardha Hut, Warli Hut

udaipur tourist places timings

At a distance of 6 km from Udaipur City Railway Station and 6 km from City Palace, Sahelion Ki Bari or Garden of Maidens is a major garden located on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur. Sahelion Ki Bari was built by Maharana Sangram Singh in the 18th century. The garden was laid for a group of 48 young women attendants who accompanied a princess to Udaipur as part of her dowry. The king wanted a separate area for them, where they could spend their time leisurely. This patterned garden used to be the popular relaxing spot of the royal ladies. The garden is also known as the 'Garden of the Maids of Honour' for the same reason. The garden set below the embankment of the Fateh Sagar Lake has beautiful lotus pools, marble pavilions and elephant shaped fountains. These fountains are fed by the water of the lake gushing through ducts made for the purpose. Each water channel has its different sound and the blend of these sounds complement the atmosphere of the place. There is .....

At a distance of 6 km from Udaipur City Railway Station and 5 km from Udaipur City Palace, Fateh Sagar Lake is an artificial lake situated besides the entrance to Moti Magri Hill and to the north of Lake Pichola in Udaipur city of Rajasthan. Sas-Bahu Temple is a 10th century temple complex and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Great Kachhwa King Mahapala was built this temple. The term 'Sas-Bahu' suggests 'Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law' respectively. However, it is probably just a local corruption of the original Sahastra-Bahu name, meaning 'one with thousand arms', a form of Vishnu. The main entrance to the temples is made through a door that has carved lintels and a multi-lobed arch in its middle. Both the structures are laid out on a same plan having an altar, a mandapa (columned prayer hall) with projections and a porch. The temple of Sas is comparatively larger than that of the Bahu. The Sas temple is surrounded by ten subsidiary shrines and has a torana (archway) in the front and .....
