How To Get From Playa del Carmen to Cozumel For A Day Trip

The best way to get from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip adventure is via a 30-minute ferry ride . The process to buy tickets, get on the boat and get off is fairly easy. We will take you through the process below.

Taking The Ferry From Playa del Carmen to Cozumel Day Trip

The experience of finding the ferry terminal, buying tickets and getting on the ferry to Cozumel was an overwhelming experience for us.

We decided to take a taxi from our Airbnb apartment to the ferry terminal and they dropped us off a couple of blocks away because taxis aren’t allowed to go all the way. We got off and there were plenty of stands that say ‘Ferry to Cozumel Tickets’ along 5th Avenue so we tried going to a couple.

…they are just fake ticket stands that sell tour guides instead. They DON’T actually sell the ferry tickets. Steer away from them and you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble.

Once we found the real stand, everything was easy from there. Hopefully, this blog post prepares you and you get a better experience than us.

Ferry Ticket Location & Port

The real ferry ticket stands location is on the corner of Avenida Juarez and 5th Avenue. You will see there are two stands a couple of feet away from each other.

Tip: People will come up to you as you are lined up to sell tickets – don’t be fooled . You can only buy tickets from the cashiers behind the stand. Buy your tickets online on the official sites to save time and hassle – it’s the same price.

There are only two ferry companies:

We trust and use rentalcars.com to book a car.

You can also arrive in Cozumel and walk to car rental shops and get one right then and there.

Rent A Motorbike

Renting a motorbike in Cozumel is another popular option because it’s more flexible in terms of parking. You’re also on a beautiful island and it’d be fun to drive all around the Cozumel with a motorbike.

Take A Taxi

If you can’t rent a car or motorbike – a taxi is your next best option. You can find taxis at popular spots like right outside the ferry terminal or near hotels. Otherwise, walk to the end of the road near the street and hail one from there.

We took a taxi from the ferry terminal to an all-inclusive hotel which was like a 12 minute drive and it cost us $100 pesos ($5 USD without tip).

How to Take A Day Trip from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel in 2024

' src=

Want to take a day trip from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel? You’ve come to the right guide!

I’m a travel blogger that lives in Playa del Carmen and taking a day trip to Cozumel is one of my favorite things to do, especially when I have friends and family visiting.

It’s such an easy excursion and offers some pretty spectacular beaches, incredible snorkeling, and plenty of fun activities.

In this post, I’m detailing how to take a day trip to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen including how to get there, top things to do, and tips for visiting.

Read on for my ultimate Cozumel day trip guide!

Where is Cozumel?

Cozumel is a small island located just 18 km to the east of Playa del Carmen, Mexico .

Just 45 minutes from Playa del Carmen by ferry, the island is known for its beautiful beaches and incredible reefs for snorkeling and scuba diving.

How to Get from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel

If you’re visiting Cozumel on your own, the most common way to get there is by taking the ferry to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen.

Cozumel Ferry Location

The Cozumel ferry terminal is located in downtown Playa del Carmen just off of Avenida Juarez and 5th Avenue.

Depending on where you’re staying, the terminal can be reached easily by walking or taking a taxi.

Once you arrive to the terminal, you will likely be bombarded by unofficial salespeople on the street offering ferry tickets.

From my experience, I’ve found it safest to purchase your ferry tickets directly from the official counter, which you’ll see just outside of the terminal.

Cozumel Ferry Companies

It can be a bit overwhelming when you first arrive at the ferry terminal but there are just two ferry options to choose from– Ultramar and Winjet .

The Ultramar ferries are blue and yellow in color and the Winjet ferries are orange.

Both ferries to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen are large and comfortable, and offer food and beverage options.

The downstairs is usually air-conditioned and the upstairs offers open deck seating.  Some of the ferries even have a Starbucks barista bar and a live band!

The Ultramar ferries are newer and nicer in quality but I would recommend just checking the overhead signs to see which one will be departing next.

The two companies usually alternate their schedules but they are both going to the same place.

Ultramar Ferry to Cozumel

Cozumel Ferry Price

One-way ferry tickets to Cozumel for adults cost $280 pesos (~$16 USD) on Winjet and $290 pesos (~$17 USD) on Ultramar.

Credit cards are accepted or you can pay in Mexican pesos or USD.  They even have new ticket kiosks where you can purchase your tickets without having to go to the counter.

Travelista Tip: I would recommend purchasing one-way tickets as the ferry companies have alternating schedules. That way on the return trip you can just hop on the next departing ferry and not be bound to a particular provider.

On Ultramar, you also have the option to upgrade to a first-class ticket, which grants you access to an exclusive upstairs lounge with food and beverage service.

Both companies also offer discounts for Playa del Carmen locals and Quintana Roo residents.

Cozumel Ferry Schedule

You can check the Ultramar schedule and the Winjet schedule online in advance to plan your departure and return times.

The ferry schedule varies throughout the year but there is typically one that departs every hour .  Once you’re on the ferry, it takes less than 45 minutes to travel to Cozumel.

You’ll want to be extra mindful of when the last ferry departs so you don’t miss the last ferry to Playa del Carmen.

Getting Around Cozumel

Cozumel is a small island with a walkable downtown area, but you’ll still need to rely on these transportation methods to get around Cozumel:

If you want to explore the island away from the downtown area, taxis are safe, abundantly available, and probably the most convenient form of transportation on the island.

There is always a line of taxis waiting outside the ferry terminal where you can easily grab a taxi.

Be sure to check the price list posted on a board at the taxi stand, which will show you the cost to the most popular destinations on the island.

It’s always best to confirm the price of the taxi upfront before getting in the car. You’ll be able to pay for taxis in pesos or USD but credit cards are typically not accepted so you’ll want to make sure you have enough cash on hand.

Keep in mind that taxi prices in Cozumel are much more expensive than in Playa del Carmen and you might pay $15-$20 USD for a one-way trip.

If you’re heading to a well-known spot on Cozumel, there will more than likely be taxis waiting outside for your return trip, which makes it easy to get back to the ferry terminal.

Cozumel Boardwalk

If you prefer to venture out on your own or want to see some more off-the-beaten-path locations, then consider renting a car or jeep to explore the island at your own pace.

Rental cars are widely available in Cozumel and can be booked online in advance or directly at the ferry terminal.

Before heading out, you’ll want to do a thorough safety check on your vehicle as it’s somewhat common for them to be worn or in poor working condition.

👉 For a hassle-free experience, book your car through my favorite rental service Discover Cars by clicking here !

Cozumel Punta Sur

Cozumel Private Driver

If you want the ultimate convenience of having your own private driver that knows the ins and outs of Cozumel, then consider booking a private island tour.

Cozumel private island tours include your own personal guide who will drive you to the island’s most popular attractions.

You can plan your own itinerary whether you want to hit the beach, visit Punta Sur Park , or check out the less developed eastern side of the island.

Things to Do in Cozumel

You could easily spend 3 days in Cozumel , but if you’re only visiting for the day, below are a few recommendations for what to do in Cozumel.

There are so many fun things to do in Cozumel whether you are looking for something adventurous or simply some relaxation.

Visit a Cozumel Beach Club

Visiting a beach club is always at the top of my list whenever I visit Cozumel!

I’ve found that the beaches on the west side of the island rarely get hit with the seaweed that can sometimes be found on other beaches in Riviera Maya.

These are some of the most popular beach clubs in Cozumel, which are a short drive from the ferry terminal and downtown area:

  • Playa Palancar :  My personal favorite, Playa Palancar is about 30 minutes from the ferry terminal and offers an absolutely stunning widespread beach with clear crystal water and a few different beach clubs and restaurants to choose from for a relaxing beach club experience.

Playa Palancar Cozumel

  • Money Bar Beach Club :  A short taxi ride away from downtown, the Money Bar Beach Club is one of the most popular Cozumel beach clubs offering a restaurant, lounge beds, live music, and clear snorkeling right off the beach.
  • Tortugas Beach Club :  Tortugas Beach Club is one of the most popular oceanfront restaurants and water parks in Cozumel . While the beach area at Tortugas Beach Club is not the most widespread, it’s most known for its water activities like floating trampolines, a floating obstacle course, jet skis, and hydro-bikes.

Tortugas Beach Club Cozumel

  • Mr. Sanchos Beach Club :  This all-inclusive beach club experience offers a wealth of activities like parasailing, jet skis, pools, a water park, and a swim-up bar along with classic beach loungers and cabanas. Plus, food and unlimited alcoholic drinks are included in the admission price.

👉 Book an all inclusive day pass at Mr. Sanchos Beach Club by  clicking here !

Travelista Tip:  For a less commercialized Cozumel beach experience, head to the lesser well-known Playa Chen Rio on the east side of the island where you can hang out in a beautiful beach cove and grab some fresh seafood or drinks at the El Pescador beachfront restaurant.

Playa Chen Rio Cozumel

Go on a Snorkeling Tour

Cozumel is known for its coral reef system, which is actually the second longest in the world and makes for an amazing snorkeling experience.

There are many options for snorkeling tours in Cozumel but by far the most popular tour option is visiting El Cielo , which is a shallow snorkeling spot known for its abundance of starfish.

On the El Cielo tour, you’ll get to snorkel at three different coral reefs, as well as visit El Cielo and a super stunning beach called El Cielito.

👉 Book the best El Cielo Snorkeling Tour by clicking here !

El Cielo Cozumel

Explore Downtown Cozumel

If you’re looking for a leisurely activity in Cozumel, I would definitely recommend exploring the downtown area known as San Miguel de Cozumel .

It’s located directly across from the Cozumel ferry terminal so it’s just a short walk once you arrive on the island.

The downtown area has a cute square where you’ll find street vendors and souvenir shops selling Mexican handicrafts.

There are also benches around the square where you can just sit back and relax or enjoy a refreshing treat from one of the food vendors. It’s also a cool area for discovering some colorful graffiti.

Cozumel Street Art

Rent a Jeep in Cozumel

Another fun and more adventurous Cozumel excursion is renting a jeep to explore the island.

Jeeps can be rented from the vendors at the ferry terminal or you can book a fun jeep tour in advance online.

I’ve rented a jeep multiple times in Cozumel and it is always a blast!

It really gives you the freedom to explore the island at your leisure and discover some of the amazing Cozumel resorts and beach clubs that are off the beaten path.

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Playa del Carmen to Cozumel: Day Trip

Things to do in Cozumel

Located along Mexico’s pristine Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen is a popular destination for visitors. Playa del Carmen offers plenty of things to do like visiting nearby cenotes , but you can also take a weekend excursion or a day trip from the city. Day trips from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel are one of the most popular options.

Cozumel is an island on the Mexican Riviera Maya that stretches 34 miles long. With jungles and untouched shores, the island is largely undeveloped in comparison to the mainland.

Tourism isn’t about partying, playing beach volleyball, and shopping for designer clothes. Instead, it’s a time to disconnect and relax.

The island of Cozumel offers many activities besides the beach. San Miguel is a laid-back city surrounded by unspoiled nature on the eastern and southern shorelines. Our guide to Cozumel covers everything from things to do on the island to when to visit.

Best Time to Visit Cozumel

The average temperature in Cozumel does not vary much. The humidity often makes it feel hot for most of the year. Generally, it is a pleasant climate with occasional showers. In comparison with tourist destinations around the world, the area has a relatively temperate climate – equal to the 55th percentile.

If you enjoy sweating, Cozumel is hottest in August, July, and June. The temperature stays around 89°F from early to mid-August, with nighttime temperatures rarely dropping below 75°F.

January, February, and March are the best months to visit Cozumel if you prefer dry weather. Precipitation is at its lowest in early January. The wettest period of the year is late June.

Tourism is at its highest throughout the year in January, February, and March. This is reflected in the prices for accommodations and tours.

Is it worth it to visit Cozumel for the day?

The day trip to Cozumel is well worth it if you’re visiting the Riviera Maya or the Yucatan Peninsula.

The most iconic snorkeling and diving trip in all of Mexico is just a 40-minute boat ride from Playa del Carmen. There is little room for travel hiccups or mishaps on a Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip.

In part due to Cozumel’s easy accessibility, you can see a lot in just one day, from the ancient ruins of San Miguel to Cozumel’s bustling center.

How to Travel from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel

Cozumel can only be reached by boat from Playa del Carmen since it is an island. Passenger ferries usually take about 40 minutes to reach the island. It costs between 210 and 290 MXN ($10 to $14) for an adult to take the ferry one way. There are also round-trip tickets available. Local rates are only available to Mexican residents.

Playa del Carmen Ferry Pier

The ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen is located right in the middle of downtown, about one and a half blocks from the main square and Plaza Playacar. Several parking lots, including a garage and two street-level lots, are within walking distance of the ferry pier.

For both ferry companies, there are kiosks at the ferry pier. Reservations are not common – most people get on the next boat leaving.

There are round-trip and one-way tickets available. Purchasing one-way tickets and buying another one when you return is the best way to go. Then you won’t have to rush to the ferry pier or wait in line.

Ferry Companies Servicing Playa del Carmen and Cozumel

There are two ferry companies that offer service between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel: Ultramar and Winjet .

Playa Del Carmen boats depart between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm, and Cozumel boats depart between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm for both companies. If you have made a reservation, make sure to check their respective websites for seasonal hours or cancellations. Remember, reservations are not needed!

As far as experience and price are concerned, both ferries are pretty similar, so it really comes down to what time the next boat leaves. Restrooms and food are also available on both ferry lines. Ferry interiors are air-conditioned, and both offer ample deck space for taking in the fresh, salty air outside.

Cozumel Ferry Pier

You will find bathrooms, snacks, taxis, and plenty of tour operators at the Cozumel Ferry Pier once your journey to the island is over.

It’s important to do your research before renting a car or going on a dive tour, as there are so many different companies that offer these services. Renting a vehicle is especially important. You’ll avoid scams, be able to check reviews, and know how much things should cost.

Getting Around the Island of Cozumel

The island of Cozumel may be Mexico’s largest, but it is mostly uninhabited. San Miguel in Cozumel is definitely walkable and pedestrian-friendly if you are not interested in renting a moped or a car.

Car and moped rentals are available on the island if you don’t feel like walking or plan to explore some more remote areas. A VW Bug costs about $50 USD per day, while a Jeep Wrangler costs around $90 USD per day.

You can rent mopeds, but I would not recommend it unless you’re confident driving one. Cozumel’s traffic has increased dramatically as mopeds have become increasingly popular. Motorists often collide with tourists on mopeds.

Moped rentals start at around $30 USD per day, including a helmet, with insurance added at $15.

Taxis are widely available and inexpensive as well. The prices of rides are set and cannot be negotiated. Cozumel’s taxi drivers are union members, making their jobs very valuable – you won’t be ripped off. Cozumel’s drivers are largely bilingual and friendly, and many are also trained as tour guides, showing visitors around the island with a lot of pride.

Things to do in Cozumel

Snorkel or dive.

Snorkelers and divers alike enjoy Cozumel’s waters, and it’s easy to see why.

Within minutes of the shore are several underwater attractions, including coral reefs, submerged vegetation, and drifts. It is even possible to explore shipwrecks!

Divers of all experience levels can explore Cozumel’s waters. There is a drift dive site at the Santa Rosa Wall for PADI-certified divers. Overhangs and ledges punctuate the 15-meter-high wall, which is populated with sponges, spotted eagle rays, and pelagic fish.

Palancar Garden, which is accessible to snorkelers and divers of all skill levels, is the perfect place to see parrotfish and butterflyfish.

Sharks can be seen off the coast of Cozumel between November and March by open-water divers. You can rent snorkeling equipment at most beaches, but if you know you’ll be using it frequently, bring your own!

Punta Sur Ecological Park

One of Cozumel’s best beaches is located in Punta Sur, Cozumel’s largest eco-park. It features a lighthouse, a lagoon, and the largest forest in the Caribbean. Beachgoers enjoy laying out on the sand, lying in hammocks, and diving into the perfect waters, while basking in the sun. If you’re taking a day trip from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel and have no idea what to do, grab a day pass to Punta Sur.

However, if you are anything like Szilard, and don’t like to sit still on the beach for too long, there is plenty to do off-shore.

Visit the Faro de Celarain lighthouse and cruise through Laguna Colombia, climbing its 135 steps for a spectacular view.

Take a look at the lagoon and count how many crocodiles you can find. Don’t forget to watch out for the vultures, pelicans, and iguanas that live there naturally.

Swim with Whale Sharks

When done appropriately and with the right tour company, swimming with whale sharks in Cozumel is a minimally invasive, ethical experience.

During their annual migration, whale sharks visit the waters near Cozumel and Playa del Carmen every year. Tours to see whale sharks can usually be booked between June and September.

If you’re wondering whether a certain tour company offers ethical encounters with whale sharks, these are some factors you should consider:

  • There should be no guarantee of sightings (this generally means feeding the whales, which is not minimally invasive)
  • There should be a requirement for reef-safe sunscreen
  • Whale sharks should not be touched
  • Keep a respectable and safe distance (16 feet)
  • There will be no flash photography allowed

Explore a Shipwreck by Submarine

Would you like to explore under the surface of the water without getting wet?   A submarine tour underwater might be the perfect choice for you.

Prices at Atlantis Submarine start at $125 USD per adult.

Helmet Diving

Visit Cozumel’s underwater world with Seatrek’s helmet diving tour. In Cozumel, the Seatrek tour descends to a depth of 20 – 25 feet with the assistance of a helmet, which is attached to a breathing tube. This may be a great option for you if you’d like to experience diving without the training!

Walking along the seafloor is almost like walking on the moon; it will make you feel as if you are an astronaut.

Prices start at $85 USD .

Spend Time on the Water

Boat tours are a great way to discover Cozumel’s reefs. These reefs are home to a wide variety of wildlife including manta rays, sea turtles, starfish, pufferfish, sea eels, and turtles.

On this side of the island, when the north wind is calm, the seas are calm, and many of the tours include snorkeling gear and allow you to go diving right in.

Visitors can explore the tropical reefs of Paradise Reef, Villa Blanca, and Dzul-Ha from glass-bottom boats, while sunset cruises provide the epitome of a dreamy day in paradise. We love Clear Boat Tour with Enva Tours which is pictured.

Are you interested in exploring the island from off-shore but don’t want to take a boat tour? Whether you rent a kayak or paddleboard, you can explore the island on your own.

San Gervasio Archeological Site

Beaches and reefs aren’t the only attractions in Cozumel. Additionally, the San Gervasio ruins hold a great deal of cultural significance to the Maya. It is one of the most popular choices for a Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip.

This complex dates from around 1,500 years ago during the early Classic period, and it is dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, goddess of childbirth and fertility.

All Mayan women, therefore, made a pilgrimage to the site once in their lifetimes and offered a sacrifice at the site.

The largest structure on the site, Ka’na Nah, appears to have been used for sacrifices, while “Central Plaza” consists of a cluster of buildings around an elevated central altar.

There is a small admission fee of approximately $9.50 USD, and the ruins are open daily from 8:00-15:45. There is parking for free, a snack bar, and souvenirs for sale at the venue.

Learn About Pearl Farming

Visitors from all over the world have visited Cozumel Pearl Farm since 2012. This isolated spot in the north is only accessible by boat, similar to Isla Pasión nearby. There is a pier at San Miguel from which boats depart.

It is recommended you leave this activity to those who’ve already experienced quite a bit of Cozumel (or who are really into culturing pearls)! While you’re there, you’ll learn all about culturing pearls, take a snorkeling trip to the beach, eat and drink, and browse for pearl jewelry.

Adults pay 110 USD for lunch and drinks. If you really want to feel like a castaway, you can spend the following night on a deserted beach. Adults can experience the overnight experience for as low as $225 USD.

The Cozumel Pearl Farm is open from 10:00 to 17:00 Monday through Saturday, closed on Sundays.

Experience a Temazcal Ceremony

Take part in a Temazcal Mayan ceremony in Cozumel for a truly unique experience. In addition to cleansing and purifying your body and soul, a Shaman will provide a very spiritual experience for you.

Ancient Mayan ceremonies take place in small brick huts that are very hot and dark inside. There’s nothing more intense than the intense heat and darkness of a temazcal. Cool off by taking a swim after releasing yourself from the muggy hut.

Though it is quite intense, it is a unique experience that you should not miss when in Cozumel.

Sample Exquisite Mayan Chocolate

Despite being a typical tourist trap, the Mayan Cacao Company has local souvenirs and gifts for sale, but it’s (at least) educational. For a day trip to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen, it’s a great option. And… chocolate!

An outdoor museum and a chocolate shop portray the role of cacao in indigenous cuisines are incorporated into the design of this attraction, which is styled as a Mayan village.

The museum displays a collection of Mayan vessels and figurines. Additionally, you can view videos of cocoa being harvested and information about cocoa trading routes.

Enjoy a chocolate sauce-smothered tortilla and learn about ancient farming practices.

Before you purchase anything, you will be able to sample different chocolate and chocolate drinks during the tour.

Explore San Miguel

Discover the laid-back personality of the island in San Miguel, Cozumel’s ‘capital’ and major town. Cozumel visitors are almost guaranteed to pass through San Miguel at least once during their trip.

There are many interesting things to see and do in San Miguel. Sunset walks along the boardwalk are particularly enjoyable. Snorkeling and scuba diving are popular activities, and there are many dive shops or tour operators from which to choose.

Upon getting off the ferry, I recommend a breakfast burrito from Burritos Gorditos (try a breakfast burrito once you get off the ferry!) and El Amigo Abelardo . For dinner, we recommend La Mission.

One of the best things to do in Cozumel is to visit Punta Sur Eco Park. In the eco-park, you’ll see a lagoon where you may be able to spot crocodiles.

Climb the tower to enjoy the views, walk around to admire the ruins, and end the day on the beach where you can even do a bit of snorkeling.

When we visited Cozumel, we spend a few hours in Punta Sur Eco Park, and it was our favorite area on the island.

As it’s a bit further, it was less busy than places closer to the pier.

Snorkel In Cozumel

Cozumel is known for its snorkeling spots and scuba-diving opportunities. We recommend you read our guide about the best snorkeling spots in Cozumel or simply book a guided snorkeling tour .

You can bring your own snorkeling gear, or book a tour that can arrange equipment for you.

Note that when we visited Cozumel in October 2021, there was a lot of jellyfish around – so keep an eye out for them when you’re in the water.

Explore Multiple Beaches

Cozumel offers lots of nice beaches to travelers. It’s recommended to swim on the western side of the island because there’s less current than on the eastern side of the island.

That said, if you’re comfortable in the water, you can make your own decision.

We suggest you read our guide to the best beaches in Cozumel so that you can pick the ones that interest you the most.

Some beaches are ideal for relaxing, snorkeling, or for entertaining kids.

Relax In A Beach Club

If you’d rather relax, consider going to a beach club. Some of them have all-inclusive formula so they are great options for those who want to go to one place only.

Read more about the best beach clubs in Cozumel to pick the one that suits your needs.

You’ll find plenty of beach clubs not too far from the pier, but you’ll still need to rent a jeep or a scooter to reach most of them.

Visit Isla De Pasion

If you want to get away from the crowds, consider a day trip to Isla de Pasion (Passion Island).

Note that you’ll need a day pass to enter the island, but you’ll find white sand beaches as well as beautiful turquoise water.

As this island is private, you basically get access to the buffet and open bars as part of the daily pass.

To get to Isla de Pasion, you can organize a day trip there from the main Cozumel pier. You’ll need to take a jet boat to reach Passion Island.

How To Get To Playa Del Carmen From Cozumel

Once you’re done exploring Cozumel, head back to the pier and take the ferry back to Playa del Carmen.

We recommend buying a round-trip ticket at the beginning of your day trip to Cozumel to avoid having to wait in line again to buy a new ticket.

Make sure to check the ferry schedule and head to the pier at least 30 minutes before departure.

Final Thoughts On Cozumel Day Trip

Cozumel is a fun day trip from Playa del Carmen, but if you think one day is not enough to make the most of the island, simply stay longer.

Two or three days in Cozumel should be enough to do everything you wish to try around the island.

That said, as Cozumel is a safe destination , many travelers decide to spend even more time there.

We hope we were able to help you plan an exciting Cozumel itinerary.

Playa del Carmen to Cozumel Day Trip (Tips, Itineraries + Restaurants!)

Sharing is caring!

If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Playa Del Carmen a day trip to Cozumel just might be the answer for you.

This Caribbean island offers crystal clear blue water, amazing snorkeling, delicious food, and plenty of activities to entertain yourself.  Whether you are looking to discover the beautiful underwater world of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef or spend the day relaxing under the sun a Cozumel day trip is the perfect plan.

One day in Cozumel might not be enough to discover all of its beauty but it is definitely enough time to get your feet wet, literally. Whether you are coming as a day trip from Playa del Carmen, or your cruise ship is settled into the Cozumel Cruise Port for a night or two, there is plenty to enjoy on this paradise island.

Keep reading for many amazing options for your Cozumel day trip.

Cozumel is a great place for snorkeling due to its amazing visibility. If you are a snorkeling enthusiast I recommend bringing your own snorkel gear. If you don’t have your own many of the bigger beach clubs will have rentals available for your convenience.

How to Get to Cozumel

Getting from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel is very easy. You have 2 options, passenger ferry or car ferry.

The most popular way is by passenger ferry. There are two companies that run out of Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. Winjet and Ultramar. The Cozumel Ferry Terminal is located at Av. Benito Juárez 239 which is 1 block off of 5th avenue.

Both companies have ferries departing on alternating hours on both shores which makes the journey very easy.

I would recommend heading to the ferry terminal about one hour before the scheduled boat you would like to take. This will allow you time to get your tickets and head onto the ferry.  If you like to plan ahead both websites offer online ticket sales for your convenience.

The Cozumel ferry ride is about 35 – 45 minutes in duration. Both Cozumel ferries have indoor and outdoor seating and bathrooms.  Beverages and snacks are offered on board and sometimes you might even get lucky and catch some live entertainment.

Sitting outside is nice because you can catch a suntan and sometimes you can see flying fish jumping out of the ocean as the boat is cruising.

The perk of the indoor seating is that there is nice cool air conditioning. Both boats are very large and offer a very stable ride but if you tend to get sea sick easily I recommend taking a Dramamine tablet 30 minutes before your departure.

The Winjet tickets cost 210 pesos ( $10.50 USD) and Ultramar tickets cost 250 pesos ($12.50 USD). The Ultramar fleet is newer therefore the higher price.  Check out the websites for the scheduled departures and more information.

If you have rented a car in Playa del Carmen and wish to take it across the water for your Cozumel day trip you can access the Calica Ferry Port just outside the city limits.

You will have the option of  Ultramar or Transcaribe . Both have different schedules and tickets start at 650 pesos. If you wish to leave your car in Playa del Carmen there are many parking options near the passenger ferry terminal.

How to Get Around for a Cozumel Day Trip

There are several ways you can explore the Island. If you want to adventure on a scooter this is a really fun option to explore your Cozumel day trip. You can tour around the island all day with the wind blowing in your hair.

The rental process is very convenient as well. There will be many people approaching you, as you leave the ferry terminal offering you a scooter rental.

You can take this option or walk into the square as there will be many more rental opportunities. The scooter rental costs 400 – 500 pesos (about $20-25 USD) depending on the shop and this would give you access to your scooter for the entire day.

The scooter is very economical on gas and you can definitely drive around the entire island this way. It is mandatory to wear helmets on the Island and the helmets are included in the rental fee.

You can also rent a car, jeep, or dune buggy.

Having a vehicle is a great option because the island is quite large. This allows you the freedom to tour the island at your own leisure and make as many stops as you like on your route.  A lot of the must-see tourist points, landmarks, and beach clubs are not accessible by foot.

renting a car to get around cozumel in one day

Jeep rentals in Cozumel.

Taxis will always be waiting for you directly off of the ferry terminal.  If you plan to stay at one spot all day this may also be an option.

Depending on how far you venture out of the core, the cost of a taxi could be anywhere from 50 pesos to 700 + pesos ($2.50-35 USD).

Some of the bigger beach clubs will have taxis waiting when you are ready to leave but if you are at a smaller beach club it might be more difficult to find a waiting taxi as they are less available at small locations.  Sometimes I ask for my taxi driver’s phone number and then I book a scheduled return trip with them.

Bicycle rentals are also a great and eco-friendly option if you plan to stay within the downtown center and feel like having a sporty day.

Bike rentals cost 150 – 200 pesos ($7.50-10 USD), locks are usually included, and helmets are not mandatory. There are a lot of great restaurants and shops easily accessible and a few beach clubs that aren’t too far of a ride.  Feel the sunny breeze on your skin as you enjoy the scenery along the way.

Breakfast In Cozumel

Cozumel island has some of my favorite breakfast spots .  If you are looking for something quick before you begin your day you would want to try the Maple Bake House or Sucre Sale .

These two places are little hidden gems. They have a lot of coffee options, delicious fresh baked pastries, sandwiches, breakfast delights, juices and so much more. They are also faster than your normal sit-down restaurant because they mostly cater for to-go customers.

Another one of my favorites is Aqui + Ahora . A five-minute walk from the ferry terminal located right on the Malecon with a stunning view of the Caribbean sea.

Their maple pancake dish and the eggs benedict are both super delicious. Their “PB Express” iced tequila coffee beverage is a tasty sip of Mexico that compliments any dish you choose. The vibe inside is totally charming and the owner’s persona matches the brilliant ambiance.

Morning of Cozumel Day Trip

A beautiful place with an amazing view to enjoy your morning is at the famous Money Bar Beach Club .

This spot offers a wide variety of American and Mexican breakfast options, Starbucks coffee, and cocktails.

About a 10-minute drive outside the center, Money Bar is located right on the coast with dining seating, sun loungers, and access to the ocean. It is also a great place to jump in the water and cool off. If you are up for an adventure you can put on some gear and go snorkeling.

See the location of Money Bar on Google here .

Lunch In Cozumel

Coconuts is truly a place to feel at home if you like casual comfort with a flair for spontaneous interactions with your servers.

The servers love to entertain you with their appropriate (and sometimes inappropriate) or childlike fun that will make you laugh so hard you may be crying. You will never forget the humorous experience.

It is a bit of a climb to get there, but trust me, once you reach the top the view is totally worth it. Sit down, relax, and enjoy a cold beer or cocktail.

The mixed fajitas dish is really delicious and packed with flavor and the Pina Colada is so creamy and smooth, perfect for vacation.

Remember the staff and servers have a great sense of humor and love to entertain you so be prepared for a good laugh and possibly some adult fun.

Did you say you love Mojitos? Venture over for a Mojito Cocktail at Welcome to Miami .

They have two locations, one in town and another on the eastern shore of the island.

Ice cold, fresh, and loaded with rum. Welcome to Miami serves up one of the best Mojitos I have ever tasted!

They do make them quite strong so be ready to catch a buzz. They do offer a few menu items such as fresh ceviche, spiced pineapple, and guacamole but definitely, their main focus is delicious drinks.

El Cielo day trip in Cozumel.

Afternoon of Cozumel Day Trip

There are so many things to do on a Cozumel day trip, you will have to make some tough decisions. Here are a couple of things we think you’ll love on your one day Cozumel adventure.

El Cielo Boat Trip

If you are looking for a full-day activity upon arrival to Cozumel I recommend you take a boat trip to El Cielo.

Translated in English, El Cielo means, “The Sky” or “heaven.”

The water at El Cielo is some of the most beautiful crystal clear blue water I have ever seen. On the bottom of the ocean floor are hundreds of starfish for you to admire and if you are really lucky you might spot some sea turtles and rays.

The boat tours will usually provide refreshments, guacamole, and lunch. The quality of the food and service will depend on what tour you choose. You can pre-book a tour ahead of time.

This Get Your Guide tour is only $50 per person and will take to not only to El Cielo, but to a nearby reef for snorkeling. Tons of delicious food and a fantastic guide are included. Book the $50 El Cielo tour here .

If you want a bit more of a luxury boat, a beach party, and to explore some of the most beautiful parts of Cozumel by water, this Get Your Guide tour is $80 per person. In addition to everything that the cheaper tour includes, this tour also offers unlimited drinks, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, while you are on the vessel. Book the party boat tour here .

East Coast Beach Hopping

You can check out the eastern shoreline of Cozumel where there are tons of beautiful spots to stop and take pictures.

El Mirador , a little beach with beautiful rock formations and big waves breaking up on the shore is a hidden treasure. You will find local vendors selling souvenirs and tee shirts. Grab your camera and go exploring.

You may want to wear water shoes here because the rocks on the ground can be a bit sharp.

Then you can make Playa Chen Rio your next stop on the eastern shore. Looking out you can see all the different colors of beautiful blue that make up the Caribbean Sea.  There is a cute little observation deck perfect for photos. Jump in the water and cool off but do be careful as sometimes the waves get quite strong.

Depending on the time of the year you visit Cozumel, the eastern shoreline might not be as enjoyable.

In the summer months (June, July, and August), the tides bring in Sargasso (a seaweed you’ll find all over the Riviera Maya ).

This makes the water unpleasant for swimming. The amount of Sargasso can change daily. It just depends on the wind direction, current, and tides.

El Mirador and Chen Rio are both on the eastern side. The best thing to know is that the west shore offers so many beautiful Cozumel beaches where the Sargasso doesn’t reach the waters. Money Bar, Playa Corona, and Playa Palancar are all on the western shore.

Great Cozumel Beach Clubs

Cozumel offers a wide variety of different beach clubs all offering sand, sun, and vacation vibes. A great way to spend one day in Cozumel

Playa Corona Beach Club

If you love snorkeling and a relaxed atmosphere, Playa Corona is the spot for you. This beach club offers cold refreshments, local cuisine, amazing snorkeling, sun loungers, hammocks, and table seating.

I find this beach club is not as busy as some of the others in the area which is nice if you like a quieter place.  Another great perk is that the club has built stairs going down to the ocean so you can easily get right into the water.

The water is shallow which makes for an easy leisurely snorkel. Admire the fan coral and many fish of all different sizes swimming around. The last time I was there I was blown away by the amount of big fish I had seen. This truly is a place they like to hang out.

Playa Palancar Beach Club

Your next stop on your Cozumel Day Trip could be Playa Palancar Beach Club . This Place has it all! Delicious Mexican (and American) Cuisine, cocktails and a full bar, sun loungers, and shaded umbrella tables.

There are also showers, bathrooms, and towel rentals in case you have forgotten yours. The Palancar beach front is beautiful with white sand and crystal clear calm blue water perfect for swimming.

Want more adventure? Playa Palancar offers jet skis, kayaks, banana boats, parasailing, snorkeling, scuba, and fishing tours at an additional price.

If you are wanting some rest and relaxation, then you can indulge yourself in a beach-front massage or just chill out in the shaded hammock zone. Playa Palancar beach club is really an easy way to spend one day in Cozumel.

Cozumel beach clubs.

Buccanos Grill and Beach Club

At Buccanos Grill and Beach Club , you will find beautiful white sand and perfect blue water. They have sun loungers for relaxing and table seating as well.

This beach club has more of an elegant atmosphere, plays great music, and offers more of a gourmet menu.

Try the tuna tostadas and the lobster macaroni and cheese. This place is also great for families with easy access to the ocean and a pool.

The water is shallow upon entering and is perfect for snorkeling. Below you will find rocks and coral, the ideal home for many little fish. There is so much to look at underwater that it is easy to snorkel for hours.

Buccanos also offers a free tequila tasting with many flavors to sample.

There is a small beachfront spa where you can relax and enjoy a massage or nail service. The menu prices are a tad higher but the food compensates in quality and exceptional flavor.

The relaxing atmosphere, the quality of food, fabulous service, and amazing waters makes this one of my favorite places to spend the entire day. Buccanos is so beautiful it is hard to leave.

You do need to pay a small fee to enter, much like beach clubs in Tulum or in Playa del Carmen , but the full amount of what you paid is deducted from your bill in the end.

Dinner in Cozumel

If you are an enthusiast for a beautiful sunset head over to Jeanie’s .

This cozy beach bar and restaurant is the perfect way to end your day in Cozumel. Happy hour is from 4-7 pm leaving you plenty of time for 2 for 1 drinks.

Again, there is a nice little spot for snorkeling. There is a ladder for easy access in and out of the water and some cement statues at the bottom of the sea.

With a depth of only 5 meters (16.5 feet), it’s fun to swim down and check out the underwater view.

The sun will set over the shore of Playa del Carmen beaming a beautiful orange on the horizon. One of the most serene parts of the day.

For a more formal dining experience, you won’t want to miss Casa Mission .

This beautiful historic property is located in the center of Cozumel about a 5-minute drive from the beach. The surf and turf are delicious and the service is top-notch.

The tabletop preparation of the Caesar salad is put together right in front of your eyes and packed with bountiful fresh flavor. After dinner, you can wander around the property and find the gift shop with local artisans and enjoy a free tequila tasting if you wish.

Beer have to check out Cerveceria Punta Sur as it is Cozumel’s own craft beer micro-brewery.

They are situated right on top of a small cenote and what is really unique about their brewing process is that they pull the fresh water right from the ground. Be sure to try the stuffed mushroom caps and the blanca pizza.

Grab a Souvenir from One Day in Cozumel

Looking to take home a souvenir from your Cozumel day trip?

Wander into the town center where you will find an abundance of vendors selling local treasures.

Clothing, towels, hand-painted wooden bowls, dream catchers, leather goods, shot glasses, and much more. If you find something you love, don’t settle on the first price they tell you. You can use your negotiating skills for a bit of an advantage, and speak some Spanish if you can!

Now back to the ferry to return to Playa Del Carmen with memories you will never forget.

Playa del Carmen to Cozumel: Day Trip Ideas & Logistics

P laya del Carmen is among the most popular destinations to visit in Mexico’s pristine Riviera Maya. While there are plenty of things to do in Playa del Carmen even if you just want to hang out at your amazing resort , there are also a number of great day trips and weekend excursions to experience! One of the most popular options is to head on a Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip.

On the Mexican Riviera Maya, Cozumel is an island 34 miles long. Unlike the mainland, the island is largely undeveloped with jungles and untouched shores . According to our guide on Cozumel it’s what Playa del Carmen was 30 years ago, with plenty of tranquility to go around.

Tourists don’t come to party, play beach volleyball, and shop for designer clothing. Rather, it’s a time to unplug and enjoy basking in nature.

Besides the beach, Cozumel offers a wide range of activities. The city of San Miguel is super laid-back, with the eastern and southern shorelines engulfed by stunning, untouched nature. Here we’ll cover everything from things you can do on Cozumel to when to visit the island.

In this article you’ll find the best things do to on Cozumel, and Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip logistics you need to know before you go and more.

Best time to visit Cozumel

Cozumel has very little variation in average temperatures . Due to the humidity, temperatures feel hot for about half of the year. Otherwise, the weather is pleasant with sporadic rain showers. If compared to tourist destinations worldwide, the area has somewhat temperate weather – equal to the 55th percentile.

Cozumel is warmest in August, July, and June , so if you’re into sweating, those are the best months to visit. Temperatures stay about 89°F (32°C) throughout early to mid August, with nighttime temperatures rarely dropping below 75°F (24°C). This is also the best time to swim with whale sharks near Cozumel.

If you are looking for dry weather in Cozumel, the best months to visit are January, February, and March. Early January is the time when there is the least chance of precipitation. On the other hand, late June tends to be the time with the most rainfall.

January, February, and March are the months that see the highest influx of tourists throughout the year. Prices for accommodation and tours reflect the area’s high season.

Is a day trip to Cozumel worth it?

If you’re planning a vacation on the Riviera Maya or the Yucatan Peninsula, then Cozumel is definitely worth a day trip.

Located just a 40-minute boat ride fro m Playa del Carmen , it is arguably the most iconic diving and snorkeling trip in all of Mexico. A Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip is about as easy as they come, leaving little room for travel hiccups or things to go wrong. Due in part to the easy accessibility around the island of Cozumel, you can fit a lot into a single visit, from the ancient ruins of San Miguel to San Miguel de Cozumel’s buzzing town center.

How to get from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel

Considering it’s an island, Cozumel is only accessible by boat from Playa del Carmen. Tourists usually take a passenger ferry, which takes about 40 minutes . A one-way, adult ferry ticket costs between 210 – 290 MXN ($10 – $14) . Roundtrip tickets are also available. The local rates are only for Mexican residents.

Playa del Carmen ferry pier

Playa del Carmen’s ferry terminal is right in the middle of downtown , about one and a half blocks from the main square and Plaza Playacar. A short walk from the ferry pier are two street-level parking lots and an underground parking garage .

There are kiosks near the ferry pier for both ferry companies. It’s not common to make reservations – most people just get on the next boat leaving.

There are one-way and round-trip tickets available. The best thing to do is purchase a one-way ticket and then purchase another one when you are ready to return . This will allow you to avoid waiting around or rushing back to the ferry pier since the two companies run ferries at different times.

Give yourself ample time to buy tickets and board the Cozumel ferry in Playa del Carmen, especially if you’re visiting during peak tourism season. To board our Ultramar ferry, we went through a security line (bag scanning machine + walk-through X-ray as at an airport), up an escalator to a long snaking line of people waiting to show tickets and then back down a ramp to the actual dock. The whole process was efficient but took about 20 minutes from when we arrived at the ferry terminal due to the peak crowds.

Ferry companies servicing Playa del Carmen and Cozumel

The two ferry companies that have service between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel are Ultramar and Winjet .

Both companies have boats departing Playa Del Carmen between 8:00am and 10:00pm and Cozumel between 7:00am and 10:00pm. Make sure you check their respective websites for seasonal hours or cancellations if you’ve opted to make a reservation. Again, I’ll emphasize the fact that reservations are not necessary !

Both ferries are quite similar both in experience and price , so it really just comes down to when the next boat leaves. Food and restrooms are available on both ferry lines as well. The ferry interiors’ have air-conditioning , and both have ample deck space to take in the fresh, salty air outside.

Cozumel ferry pier

Once your journey to the island has finished, you’ll find bathrooms, snacks, taxis, and plenty of tour operators at the Cozumel Ferry Pier . These days there’s even a COVID testing kiosk, along with signs notifying visitors that masks are required in public spaces (even outdoors) in the populated parts of the island.

Given the fact that there are so many people offering everything from rental cars to dive tours, it’s wise to research different companies beforehand. This is especially true if you want to rent a vehicle . This way, you’ll avoid any scams, be able to check reviews, and have an idea of how much things should cost.

For your return journey, you’ll again need to allow around 15-20 minutes to buy tickets, run your bag through the security check and go up the escalator to have your ticket scanned.

Getting around the island of Cozumel

Cozumel may be one of Mexico’s largest islands, but most of it is uninhabited. The town of San Miguel in Cozumel is definitely walkable and pedestrian-friendly if you don’t want to rent a moped or a car.

If you don’t feel like walking or plan on venturing to some more remote areas of the island, car and moped rentals are both widely available . For a car, expect to pay around $50 USD per day for a VW Bug or around $90 USD per day for a Jeep Wrangler.

Moped rentals are available, but I personally would not recommend opting for this unless you’re confident on a moped. Traffic in Cozumel has risen considerably alongside moped popularity. Accidents involving motorists with tourists on mopeds are not uncommon .

A moped rental starts at around $30 USD per day and includes a helmet, with insurance being an additional $15.

Taxis are also widely available, and affordable. The rates are set most drives, there is no haggling of ride prices for close destinations. Cozumel’s taxi drivers are members of a lucrative union , which makes their jobs very valuable – you’re not likely to get ripped off. Almost all of the drivers on Cozumel are bilingual and friendly , and many are also trained tour guides , taking great pride in their island home and showing visitors around.

If you’re choosing to visit Punta Sur or another location that’s further from San Miguel, it’s considered a “tour” rather than a standard taxi ride. That rate is somewhat negotiable in both the price and the number of hours.

Things to do in Cozumel

Snorkel or dive.

Cozumel is among the top snorkeling and diving destinations in the world, and it’s easy to see why.

Among the many underwater attractions are the protected coral reefs, submerged vegetation-covered walls, and drifts , all within minutes of the shore. There are even shipwrecks to explore!

The Cozumel waters are suitable for newly qualified divers and advanced divers alike ( this tour is awesome for certified divers , while new divers should sign up for this full day Discovery Dive ). PADI drift divers can explore the Santa Rosa Wall. This is a 15-meter wall punctuated by overhangs and ledges populated by sponges, spotted eagle rays, and pelagic fish.

Getting close to parrotfish and butterfly fish is easy in Palancar Garden , which is accessible to snorkelers and divers of all experience levels.

Divers who are open-water certified can get close to sharks off Cozumel between November and March. Snorkeling equipment can be rented on most beaches , but to save money, I suggest bringing your own if you know you’ll use it often! This is especially important if you need snorkel gear for kids , as some outfitters will (wrongly) try to give them adult-sized sets.

To see the best of Cozumel when snorkeling, you may want to sign up for this Cozumel snorkel tour .

Punta Sur Ecological Park

Punta Sur, Cozumel’s largest eco-park, is home to a lighthouse, a lagoon and one of the best beaches on the island . Beach goers love to bask in the sun, on the powdery sand with hammocks and cabanas surrounding them, freely dashing into the perfect waters. If you’re taking a Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip and aren’t exactly sure what to do, grab a day pass to Punta Sur for some tranquility.

We opted to head down to Punta Sur and found it to be delightfully empty despite the intense crowds back in Playa del Carmen. It’s the perfect way to relax on Cozumel! There are several beach clubs along the water where you can set up camp for the day while you frolic and enjoy food and drinks on the beach. Be sure to bring pesos as “the credit card readers are down” seems to be a common refrain.

If you want to snorkel in Punta Sur, know that it’s a pretty far swim to get out to the reef and the surf can sometimes be intense out that far. I swam out there – with no fins and with a 7 year old riding on my back – and didn’t see a whole lot. Some snorkelers opt to have a guide paddle them out to the reef and then they hop off to explore; I recommend this option if you’re interested in snorkeling at Punta Sur.

Be sure to wear reef-safe sunscreen , and using a rash guard is an even better way to minimize your impact on the delicate reef ecosystem.

If you want to stay busier, you can take a cruise across Laguna Colombia and climb the 135 steps to the top of the Faro de Celarain lighthouse for a spectacular view. See how many crocodiles you can count in the lagoon. Also be sure to keep an eye out for the vultures, pelicans and iguanas that live there in their natural habitat.

On the practical side, we were glad to be escorted there by our driver Edgar. He has spent most of his life on Cozumel and knows the island well. The road within Punta Sur is very rugged but he handled it safely and unflinchingly. We paid $80 US for him to drive us for the day, which included nearly an hour each way to and from from San Miguel and as much time as we wanted to stay at the park.

Swim with whale sharks

We try to avoid a ctivities that involve commercial animal exploitation. However, swimming with the whale sharks in Cozumel is a minimally invasive, ethical experience if done properly and with the right tour company .

Whale sharks make their way to the waters near Cozumel and Playa del Carmen each year during their annual migration. You can usually book whale shark tours between the months of June – September. Since we visited in December, it wasn’t an option for us – this is one thing that’s on our Mexico bucket list for a future visit!

Some factors to consider if you’re wondering whether or not a prospective tour company gives ethical whale shark encounters include:

  • Tour operators should not be able to guarantee sightings (this usually means they feed the whales, which is a no-no)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen should be required
  • No touching of the whale sharks
  • Maintain a respectful and safe distance (16 feet or approximately 5 meters)
  • No flash photography permitted

Explore a shipwreck by submarine

You don’t want to get wet, but still want to explore under the surface of the water?  An underwater submarine tour might be right up your alley. As the submarine descends 100 feet (30m) below the surface, you’ll have the opportunity to see incredible marine life, a sunken shipwreck, and even a 400 foot drop-off aptly called The Wall .

This is the perfect activity for those who aren’t quite ready for diving, especially if you’re visiting Cozumel with kids ages 4+. Just be sure no one in your group is claustrophobic!

Prices at Atlantis Submarine start at $79 USD per adult and $49 per child.

Try helmet diving

Take a ‘helmet diving tour’ with Seatrek to discover the underwater world lying just offshore from Cozumel. During a Seatrek tour in Cozumel, you descend to a depth of 20 – 25 feet wearing a helmet that is connected to a breathing tube. If you’re interested in the experience of diving without the training, this may be a great option for you !

Almost like walking on the moon , walking along the seafloor is a unique experience that will make you feel like you’re an astronaut.

Prices start at $79 USD.

Spend time on the water

One of the best ways to discover the reefs of Cozumel is to take a boat tour. Among the amazing wildlife that you can see on these reefs are manta rays, sea turtles, starfish, puffer fish, moray eels, and turtles .

When the north wind is calm, the seas on this side of the island are calm and many of the tours give snorkeling equipment and allow you to dive right in.

Glass bottom boat tours offer a view of life on Dzul-Ha, Paradise Reef, and Villa Blanca, while sunset cruises complete a dreamy day in paradise , with the option to snorkel if someone in your group wants to. This is a great option for a family trip to Cozumel thanks to the flexibility and affordable pricing!

If you don’t want to take a boat tour but still want to explore the island from off-shore? Rent a kayak or paddleboard for a more DIY experience.

In Cozumel, there are more than beaches and reefs. You can also explore the vestiges of a site of great cultural value to the Mayan people, the San Gervasio ruins. This is among the top choices for people taking a Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip.

Dedicated to Ixchel, goddess of childbirth and fertility , the complex dates from around 1,500 years ago in the early-Classic period.

Therefore, all Mayan women were expected to make a pilgrimage to the site and make an offering once in their lifetime.

It’s likely that sacrifices took place at Ka’na Nah, the largest structure on the site, while the “Central Plaza” is an ensemble of buildings around an elevated central altar.

The ruins are open daily between 8:00-15:45, and there is a small admission fee of roughly $9.50 USD. The venue has restrooms, a snack bar, free parking, as well as souvenirs for sale.

Learn about pearl farming

Since 2012, the family-run Cozumel Pearl Farm has welcomed visitors from around the world. Similar to Isla Pasión nearby, you can only get to this isolated spot in the north by boat. The boats depart from the San Miguel pier.

On average, visitors spend six hours at the farm, meaning this activity would best be left if you’ve already experienced much of what Cozumel has to offer (or you’re really into culturing pearls)! Over the course of your visit, you’ll learn how pearls are made, snorkel and relax on the beach, eat and drink, and shop for unique pearl jewelry.

The price includes lunch and drinks ($110 USD for adults). For the ultimate experience, you can stay on a deserted beach the following night, like a castaway . Rates for the overnight experience start at $225 USD per person (adults).

The Cozumel Pearl Farm is open from 10:00-17:00 Monday thru Saturday, closed on Sundays.

Experience a Temazcal ceremony

A unique experience in Cozumel is taking part in a Temazcal Mayan ceremony. A Shaman will help you cleanse and purify your body and soul during your journey, making for a very spiritual experience.

Small brick huts are used for these ancient Mayan ceremonies, which are very hot and dark inside. The term temazcal refers to a hut that is filled with intense heat and almost total darkness . After release from the muggy hut, cool off by taking a swim.

Although it is quite intense, it is a one-of-a-kind experience to commemorate your time in Cozumel.

Sample exquisite Mayan chocolate

While the Mayan Cacao Company is a typical tourist trap, it is at least educational and stocks local souvenirs and gifts for sale. It’s a great activity option for a Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip. Plus….. chocolate!

Designed like a Mayan village, this attraction combines an outdoor museum and a chocolate shop that charts the role of cacao in indigenous cuisines.

A Mayan vessel and figurine collection is on display for visitors to see. You’ll also find information about the history of cocoa trading routes and videos of cocoa being harvested.

Discover ancient customs and agricultural practices, as well as try a tortilla smothered in typical chocolate sauce .

After the tour, you can sample different chocolate bars and chocolate drinks before buying.

Explore San Miguel

Visit San Miguel, Cozumel’s ‘capital’ and main town, to get a sense of the island’s laid back personality . A visitor to Cozumel is almost certain to pass through San Miguel at some point during their visit.

San Miguel offers a number of interesting sights and activities. It is particularly enjoyable to walk along the scenic boardwalk during sunset. If you are interested in snorkeling or scuba diving, there are many dive shops around, or tour operators with which to book an excursion.

Some popular options in San Miguel were at Burritos Gorditos (try a breakfast burrito once you get off the ferry!) and El Amigo Abelardo .

How to take the Ferry from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel

Ferry from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel

Getting from the mainland to Cozumel is relatively pretty simple on the Cozumel ferry. Here is all the information you need to know to make your trip easy.

There are 2 Ferry Companies that Cross from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel

There are now two companies that service the crossing. Click on the names to go to their websites. The two Cozumel ferry companies are :

All boats are similar. All of the ferry companies have kiosk near the ferry pier. Most people just show up and take whatever boat is leaving next. You can buy one way or round-trip tickets. We recommend just getting a one-way ticket and then buy a ticket when you are ready to come back. That way you are not waiting for a ferry that you already bought a return ticket for or trying to catch a certain time ferry.

Pre booking tickets for the ferry

If you would like to purchase your tickets in advance, you can do so with the reserve now button below.

For a ticket on Ultramar ferry click this link.

day trip playa del carmen to cozumel

How much does the Cozumel ferry cost?

The Cozumel ferry cost about 250 pesos one way or 500 pesos round trip. Basically, both are all about the same price and convenience of what boat is leaving next is going to be the deciding factor.

What are the child prices for the Cozumel ferry?

Children 2 years old up until 12 years old are 200 pesos one way or 400 roundtrip.

One big money saving tip is for locals with proof of ID is get a local ticket price.

What time do the ferries go to Cozumel?

For our complete Cozumel ferry schedule see our article here.

Ultramar crosses 30 times a day between Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel.

Winjet has service leaving Playa Del Carmen 9:00am-9:00pm and from Cozumel 8:00am-8:00pm. Some of these can be seasonal so double check on their website.

How do I get from the ADO bus station to the Cozumel ferry?

You can easily walk from the ADO bus station on Juarez Avenue and 5th Avenue. It is only about 3 blocks. Just exit the bus station onto 5th Avenue and turn right. Go two blocks and then take a left down the ocean. Easy enough.

If you are carrying a lot of luggage, then you can get a tricycle taxi to load up your stuff and bike it down to the ferry. Bicycle taxis are located right next to the bus station on Juarez Avenue.

If you are coming from the Cancun Airport on ADO bus, you will go to the ADO bust station on Juarez Avenue, close to the ferry. The airport bus only goes to this station.

How long does the Cozumel ferry take?

The ferry is just over 30 minutes to cross. Boats leave very close to schedule. If there are rougher seas, then the crossing can take a little longer. Make sure you get there at least 10 minutes before they leave so you can walk out and get on.

Will I get seasick on the ferry to Cozumel?

Most likely not. The ride is pretty smooth, and most people can handle it. If you are sensitive, they do have bags available. If the wind is high, the seas in the middle between Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen can get a bit bumpy. Most of the time though there is clear sailing.

Do the Cozumel ferries have bathrooms or food?

Yes, to both. There are drinks available at small bars on the ferries.

Do the ferries have air-conditioning?

Yes, all the ferries are air conditioned and actually quite comfortable. There is seating outside as well to get some fresh air and take photos. Most people prefer to relax inside though.

Cozumel ferry

Are the ferries handicap accessible?

Yes. There are always crew available to assist with loading. The gangplank is usually too narrow for wheelchairs. So special care has to be given and passengers with handicaps will be assisted.

Is there a car ferry to and from Cozumel?

Yes. It is called Trans Caribe but this is totally different than the above-mentioned ferry companies. It leaves from the Calica port which is about 10 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen.

There is however no need to take your car over for the day. It is much easier to rent a car while on Cozumel. The price of shipping a car over outweighs any benefit to renting a car.

How often do the car ferries cross between Cozumel and the mainland?

The ferry crosses 4 times a day except Sundays when it just crosses twice. For exact hours check the link above to Trans Caribe.

What services are there when you arrive to the Cozumel Ferry Pier?

The Cozumel Ferry Pier is very modern and makes it easy to access the town of San Miguel and points beyond. There are bathrooms and snacks at the pier and many tour operators selling everything from dive tours to rental cars. It is best however to research what is best for you before getting off the boat.

There are taxis right outside the terminal lined up to take you all over the island.

Near the ferry terminal there are many jewelry stores that cater to cruise ship arrivals. Most of the bars and restaurants are to your right as you exit. The town itself does not have much to offer day trippers or tourist except for the area close to the ferries. Most of the destinations people want are out of town.

If you have some time while waiting for the ferry in Playa Del Carmen, make sure you walk around Parque Fundadores (Founders Park) because there is always something going on there for entertainment, and it is a nice place to grab a snack.

Where do you park to take the Cozumel Ferry?

On the south end of Playa where you will take the ferry there are two street level parking lots and an underground parking garage. You can see a map with more details here in our Parking Guide to Playa .

Here is a map of where the Cozumel ferry pier is in Playa Del Carmen

We will be coming off a cruise ship and want to take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen. Is the distance walkable or a taxi needed?

Hello. There are several cruise ship ports on Cozumel so it will depend on which on you arrive at and how close it is to the ferry terminal in Cozumel. Once you arrive in Playa Del Carmen you are almost right on 5th Avenue. You can start walking from there to explore.

What is the ferry that is at the pier at av constituyenes? Does that also go to Cozumel?

This ferry has been there lately and usually this is used for the cruise ships that need to send people over to the mainland. Because of the amount of people that arrive at the same time, they have used the Constituyentes pier. We have seen a ticket booth there but have not confirmed any regular schedule for single passengers going to Cozumel. We will keep you informed about this to see if there is more concrete information.

I noticed that more of the Cozumel ferry companies are offering local discounts. I guess to compete with each other.

How far is it from the ferry to Alantics Submarine? How much does it cost to take the Submarine for an adult? Are they open daily and what hours?

Hello Adeline

The Atlantis Submarine is south of the ferry pier. It is a taxi ride since it is longer than a decent walk. We do not have nay information on them since they never responded to our emails. We hope to visit and have a full story on them soon. For now you should be able to find there website online. This tour is popular with cruise ship visitors so it can get full at times.

How far is the ferry from the 3D Museum of Wonders?

The museum is a walkable distance from the Cozumel Ferry Pier. You can walk up 5th Avenue until 8th Street and go one block up to 10th Avenue.

All things considered, this is a first class post with good details.

Hello. Thank for the info. What, roughly, can I expect to pay for a taxi from the ADO on 20th, to the ferry? There will be too of us with two backpacks. Thanks.

If you get a taxi from the Stand it technically should be 30 pesos and 25 from hailing a taxi off the street. Often they ask for more though.

Thanks for your good advice. We are heading to Cozumel this week after being in Playa Del Carmen for one month. We planning checking things out there.

We are flying into cancun and transfering to the ferry to cozumel and the same on our way back. What is the luggage restrictions on the ferrys. Is the a max. We will be traveling with young children so will have some luggage.

It seems like there is not a strict policy on luggage, just that large bags cannot go in the cabin since it will block isles. They should place your bags for you and tip is appreciated. There are three ferry companies but we think they should all be the same with luggage. If you find anything different, please let us know. We hope you have a great trip.

Hello Darrell

We did confirm with Ultra Mar, one of the ferry companies that you can bring suitcases with you with no extra charges.

Hi, is it possible to take a bicycle on the ferry?

It is possible to take a bike. You will have to park it on the back deck.

Hello. Can you tell me whether there are luggage lockers big enough to take cases 30 x 40 x 60cm at the ferry pier in San Miguel? My wife and I want to visit the nearby Museo before crossing to Playa del Carmen, but will have our luggage with us. Thanks.

We are not sure but think it is more like a bag check and you should be able to check them. Sorry we have not checked bags there, so we are not sure.

If I take the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel, how far is to the Carnival cruise port?

There are three docks in Cozumel. You will need to know what dock the cruise comes to. They announce it on a website for what ships are docking where. One is very close to the ferry from Playa Del Carmen but another one is about a 8 minute taxi ride to the south.

Thanks for the detailed guide. We are coming to Mexico for the first time and splitting our time between Cozumel and Playa. We are expecting to transfer a couple of times on the ferry.

Do the passenger ferries going to Playa del Carmen ever sell out? Should I try and reserve tickets ahead of time?

We have never seen them really sell out. They do get full but there are ferries every 30 minutes so even if one is sold out you have a short wait. Usually during high demand like for the Ironman they have extra ferries.

Hi. We are staying at Riu Mexico in Playa but want to catch the ferry to go over to Cozumel one day during our trip. How far away from our hotel is the place where we would get on the ferry?

Hello Ellen

Your hotel is toward the middle of Playacar and walking would be a good 20 minute walk. A taxi is best and will cost about 90 pesos each way. From where the taxi drops you it is about two blocks of pedestrian streets.

thank you so much!! this helps with our planning tremendously. 🙂

Hey Mr Yucutan

Just wanted to say thank you for all your detailed responses. They have helped with our plans and budgetting tremendously

Thanks for all your help planning out our vacation and travel tips! We really appreciated it.

Thanks for all the good information. Is there a rental car agency near the ferry port in Cozumel?

There are many small car rental companies by the ferry but we don’t really recommend them. They are really geared for tourist and often do not offer the best services of prices. geared for tourist and We don’t have one car rental company to recommend but we prefer some that are in the town. Maybe getting a recommendation is good. Many of the cars on Cozumel are older and not in great shape. Some are convertibles which are fun but you will get a lot of sun, so keep that in mind.

Once you arrive at the Cozumel ferry are there plenty of taxi/vans to take you to your condo/hotel? We are a family of 5 and most likely need a van with luggage and all. Approximately what is the cost to expect to do this? Thanks!

If you are going to Cozumel and getting off the ferry there, yes, there are plenty of taxis and there are a lot of van taxis on Cozumel. Hotels there are very spread out so knowing what hotel you are going to would be a reference point for pricing. Taxis are not metered so it is good to ask. For 5 people going to some of the hotels it would be about 200/400 pesos. If you are coming to Playa Del Carmen, there are bike taxis that can carry your luggage to the taxi stand on Juarez Avenue three blocks away. Here you can get a taxi to where you need to go.

Hello! We are flying in to Cancun and going to Cozume with our 11 month old babyl. It will be our first trip to the island could you suggest the most comfortable way of getting to the ferry taxi or a transfer company? Thank you!

Hello Alisa

It is fairly easy and smooth to get from the Cancun Airport to the Cozumel Ferry and then to the island. There is a transfer company we recommend and we have the link and all the details here: https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/cancun-airport-to-cozumel/ We hope you have a great vacation here and a smooth transfer from the airport to Cozumel.

I am going on a carnival cruise and want to go to playa, what is the best beach

Hello Misty Since you have the day there and are arriving at the Cozumel Ferry pier in Playa, you can choose the beach just north of the pier. There is a beach club called Wah Wah that has free chairs as long as you get some drinks or food. The beach is good and it is casual. We hope you have a great time visiting!

Will the ferry take american dollars?

Hello Misty. The ferry will take USD. They will exchange it at their own rate but it will not be too bad.

We r going to Cancun in Sep and want to go to Cozumel not sure if just as a day trip or an overnight stay wld it b easy to get a hotel for 1 night if we decided to stay and get the ferry back to playadelcarmen the next day r hotels near the ferry port or located further away

If you are staying in Cancun it is going to take you one hour to Playa Del Carmen and one hour for the ferry, so already that is four hours of transportation in one day. It is possible to do it as a day trip. You might want to go to Cozumel and see it and then come back to Playa and spend the night since you will have many options for places to eat and walk around. On Cozumel there are hotels near the pier but most are basic. The town on Cozumel is “ok” . Most of it is designed for cruise ship people with jewelry stores and bars. We would recommend staying in Playa for the night and then in the morning going back to Cancun.

Hi thanx for the info wld it be easy to book a hotel on Cozumel on the day we do a trip if we did decide to stay the night there and return by ferry the next day to playa then back to Cancun went to Cancun about 8yrs ago and took the bus to playa and had a walk about but did’nt do any ferry trips but thought we’d do it this time

There are some hotels in the downtown and it should be easy to book a night once there. You could write down some of the addresses so you know what is available before you go. Unless it is a major event like carnival or the Ironman, there usually are rooms. Hotel prices range from $40 USD and up. Some of the hotels will not be on booking sites since some are local ones.

I am staying in cozumel and my flight back home is at 8:00 in the morning. Which means I have to be at the airport at 6:00 and leave cozumel before 5 am. Is there another ferrys or boats we can take really early in the morning to make it to playa del Carmen and to the airport?

The ONLY option you have is to leave Cozumel the night before because if your flight is at 8am you need to be at the airport at 6am and leave from Playa at 5am. If you were on Cozumel that means leaving at 4am. There are flights from Cozumel to Cancun but they are not that early. Maybe changing your flight will end up costing you something but less stressful and less then getting a hotel for the night in Playa.

Hello, we are staying in Tulum and not sure whether to fly into Cancun and take a taxi (1.5 – 2 hrs??) or if there is a shuttle? Or should we fly into Cozumel and take the Ferry to Playa, then a 30m taxi from there to Tulum? Any thoughts/guidance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello Kim One factor is going to be the price of the flight. Most flights are cheaper into Cancun. Once you land we reccomend taking a private transfer. They will be waiting for you and have more space than a taxi. Here is our article on one transfer company we reccomend. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/how-to-get-from-the-cancun-airport-to-tulum/ One thing you have to also think about is the time it takes to get from the Cozumel airport to the ferry, then the 45 minute ferry. It also might be a windy day and the ferry could be rougher. Not the best way to start your vacation. The connection from Cancun Airport is smooth and fast. We hope you have a great vacation here.

You got a very great website, Glad I found it, you have lots of helpful articles for our trip.

Can I pay for the shuttle tickets by credit card or cash only?

You can by both credit card or cash. If you use Card, it is best to use the booth close to the Ferry Terminal since they will be more likely able to give you good service. There are booths along 5th Avenue for example but they might not have the best connection to use your card.

I heard the taxi’s on Cozumel are pretty expensive. Is that true or are they similar to the pricing on the mainland? We are renting a car for our stay on the mainland but wanted to go to Cozumel for a day and thought we would ferry it over, but you say that’s not really worth doing. My concern is that by the time we ferry 4 of us over, get a taxi to go in town and then rent a car – that will be expensive. 🙁 Your opinion…

Our question to you is, what do you want to do there? It sounds like you want to drive around the island. If you take the Cozumel ferry it arrives just in the town and you can walk from there to a car rental agency. There are about 5 right in the terminal. All are booths and all are, how shall we say, tourist ones. We don’t have a good agency to recommend. For the most part it will be fine and you should not worry. You do get what you pay for so if a car is really cheap, like $30 USD for the day with insurance, you might get an old car. Just check things out and ask about all the fees first. The loop around Cozumel is cool to drive and a few small bars dot the far side of the island. There are a few public access beaches on the far side. Most of that area is natural. If the weather looks bad from here you can always skip it. That is the benefit of living so close and not booking ahead.

Are shops and things to do open on Sundays in Cozumel? Or is it better to go over on Mon – Sat?

Most stores are along the waterfront and cater to cruise ship tourist. There are lots of jewelry stores and tequila tastings. You don’t find too many higher end shops and it is touristy (aka Senor Frogs). Shops are open because it is for tourist and at any given day there are cruise ships arriving.

We are staying in Cozumel and need to take the 5:45 a.m. Ferry to Playa del Carmen to catch a transfer at the Nike Store at 7:20 a.m.to Xel-ha. Do you know if anything would be open where we could wait?

Hello Maureen

Most places around there open at 8am. There is a Starbucks on the second floor of the Cozumel Ferry Pier. WE are not sure if it is open that early. If not, there is seating there on the second level and you can enjoy the ocean views. We hope you have a great time at Xel Ha. Let us know if you need anything else.

What is the best way to get to Playa Del Carmen from Cancun? Also, how much is a round trip ticket in USD$ for an adult. Thanks.

You have two options but the ADO bus is the easiest. But we should ask if you are coming from the Airport or from Cancun? We have both covered in this guide. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/playa-del-carmen-transportation/

Are you asking how much a round trip is in USD for the ferry or transportation from Cancun?

Hello, I am staying at sandos caracol in November and it seems like the flight to Cozumel is cheaper compared to Cancun airport. What would be the difference in pricing to get to my hotel? I would have to take the ferry then a taxi to get to my hotel compared to a taxi or transfer service from Cancun airport.

I bet you did not think we would have an article about it! https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/cozumel-airport-to-playa-del-carmen/ It is cheaper but does require two taxi rides and a ferry. You have to account for the weather too.

Hello there, we’ll be taking the ferry to Cozumel and looking for the best place to go snorkeling. Once there, where should we go and do we need to hire a guide or rent a car to get to that place? Thank you so much for your help!

Most of the better snorkeling is on the west side of the island and south of the ferry pier. Renting a car seems to be a bit of a waste since you would spend 30 minutes picking it up, driving 15 minutes and then parking it while you snorkel. There are not a lot of easy access points to the water so a tour that is reasonable in price might be good. Many beach bars and hotels also offer free access as long as you buy food and drinks. one idea is to take a catamaran tour. They usually are able to get you right near the snorkel spots and then you can jump in to see the reefs. One tour is here: Catamaran Sail and Snorkel Tour in Cozumel – $55.00 from: Viator

Hi, we are arriving in Cozumel on Norwegian in a week . We want to take the ferry over to Playa and then go to Cenote Chaak Tun. How close is the ferry to the cruise ship dock? Are there taxis at the ferry dock in Playa? There will be 5 of us so we will need a bigger car. Do you suggest buying all tickets ( ferry and cenote) before we arrive? Or are the ferry tickets for a particular time?

Hello Cathy

Well first thing, there are three docks where cruised come to in Cozumel. Some are about a 15 minute taxi ride from the Cozumel Ferry. When your cruise arrives there will be ferry that come up to the boat when you dock at the southern pier but these are for pre booked excursions. So you will need to know what pier you are going to in order to plan out your timing for getting the ferry. There will be taxis outside of the all three piers in Cozumel. When you arrive in Playa there will be taxi drivers that have signs for taxi service. A taxi from Playa to the cenote for 5 people should be 660 pesos according to our taxi rate in our taxi guide. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/playa-del-carmen-taxis/ You should account for 30 minutes each way for the taxi to the cenote from the Playa dock. We hope this helps you and you have a great time.

We will be in Playa next week. My husband has a disability and needs a mobility scooter to get around. We would like to take the ferry over to Cozumel. Would there be a problem getting the scooter on board the ferry? Are the shops and restaurants in Cozumel close to the ferry landing?

Hello Shirley

They should be able to accommodate you because this is the main way all passengers get to Cozumel. There are staff at the boarding that can help. Once you arrive in Cozumel there are stores along the waterfront and restaurants within a 4 block radius to choose from. It is more geared for cruise ship guest, so expect a more touristy feel.

Is there any options to leave Cozumel to PDC at around 4am? Maybe a private company that runs earlier boats? Our flight leaves at 8:30am in Cancun.

If not then could you tell me how long it takes to get from cozumel to PDC on the ferry since i see one leaves at 5:45am? and how long it takes for a taxi to get you from PDC to the Cancun Airport?

No there are no other options. It is bad to cut it close as well since there is always a slim change the weather can be bad in the morning and the ferries can be delayed. The ferries take about 40/45 minutes. There are two types and one is slightly faster. There is the option to take a flight from Cozumel to Cancun. You can check out Mayanair for this.

Hello, staying at playa near 5th ave for the first time and going to Cozumel by ferry got a day. What beach would you recommend to go to if we take a taxi? We have a child with us. Not too touristy if possible. Thank you

Am I able to take the ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen and back?

Yes. Are you talking about the same boat and just arriving and returning in one time? You will need to get off and present your ticket for the return assuming the same ferry company is departing as soon as it arrives.

Hola!

I am glad I found your website. It has tons of helpful material. We are planning a week this year as look around tour and will be back to look at possible places to live in the area.

Hello Carlton

Thank you for reading our website and we hope you find things that you like and return soon.

We will be in Cozumel from December 27 – January 3, 2018. On our return back from Cozumel, we will require transportation from Playa Del Carmen to the Cancun Airport. My question would be, if we decide to arrange a private transfer, what is the best place for a pick up location in Playa after we get off the ferry?

Hello The transportation company will pick you up from the ferry when you arrive. When you book they give you the details. It is pretty easy to do. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/cozumel-airport-to-playa-del-carmen/

Thank you so much Mr. Yucatan! 🙂

am I able to have a safe parking spot for a rental car? we don’t want to take the car on ferry.

Yes, there are two parking lots that are safe near where the ferry is. You can see them in our parking guide here: https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/parking-in-playa-del-carmen/

Do ferries to Playa run from RCI cruise ship terminal.

Normal ferries Tun from the center of San Miguel town on Cozumel. Direct from the cruises there can be ferri s but these are for people that pre booked tours. There are three cruise ship docks on Cozumel and if you are looking to get to the mainland you can take a taxi to the pier. Only one of the piers is within walking distance to the ferry.

hi. I am visiting in a few months and staying at sandos eco resort, how far is the ferry from there? we will have 4 kids and wondering if it is walking distance or we have to get a shuttle. Also can we just take the ferry and explore or do we have to do some sort of tour?

Hello Alicia

The ferry is about a 20 minute shuttle ride from your hotel. You can take the ferry across and walk around but it is just a small town with tourist shops. The most interesting thing is the snorkeling or diving. Perhaps look for a tour that you want to do and see if you can line it up with going. This way you will enjoy the island the most and make the most of your day.

Hi we will be taking the ferry from playa del carmen to Cozumel and would like to go to a nice beach not too far from the ferry dock. Where can you recommend?

Hello! Thank you for the detailed information!!! Are US credit cards accepted as a form of payment for the ticket?

Hello Olga Yes you can pay with credit card for the tickets. We hope you have a good trip over to Cozumel.

Hi. I will be checking out of hotel in Playa and taking ferry to Cozumel for snorkeling before heading to Tulum. I will have luggage with me. Suggestions on where best to leave it please. With diving company we use? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated Gracias

That would be best just to ask your dive company to hold it for you. They usually are very helpful that way. There are no good others storage options.

Hi. We are going to Cozumel but are flying into Cancun then taking the ferry from Playa. To get a bicycle taxi for our luggage is there a preset rate?

There is no list of prices but very affordable. Somewhere in the 30-40 peso range. Just ask them and they will see how much luggage you have.

Hi! We’ll be flying into Cozumel and plan to split our trip between Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen. We land around 12:00 p.m. and plan to start our vacation in Playa Del Carmen. We have no idea how long customs will take or how quickly we can get to the ferry to Playa Del Carmen. Do we need to buy ferry tickets ahead of time or can we buy them when we get there? Do the ferries run often enough so that we won’t have to wait too long? Thanks!

The airport in Cozumel is small so you can expect customs to go fairly fast. From the airport it is about a 5-7 minute cab ride to the ferry. It is best to get a ticket there when you arrive. That way you can choose which company of the three has the next ferry. They are about every 30 minutes so the waiting is not bad. Each booth usually has a large sign with the time of the next ferry so you can choose which company to go with. We hope you have a great trip!

Hello Binh Tuong, I just did this exact trip, and am in a hotel in Akumal, south of Playa del Carmen, as I type this. My first suggestion, get some PESOS before you travel. Not a lot, but enough for taxis, a meal or so and for tipping. It has made this trip so much simpler and economical. I would say maybe $200 US Dollars worth of pesos at this time; the exchange has been at least 18 pesos to the USD right now. (We’re only here for a week, we might need more pesos, but we know that we can get the at an ATM inside of a bank if we need them). Make sure to read up on usage of ATM machines before you get here; for your financial safety. From deplaning through through the customs process took maybe 30-40 minutes, the airport is wonderfully tiny, but 2 flights had just come in, so it was probably a little busier than usual. Your luggage is RIGHT THERE and no big deal whatsoever. To avoid the multi-stop shuttles, we walked about 3 blocks away from the airport to a tiny roadside outdoor restaurant, called Diegos Tacos, (use Google and do the walking distance, I think it says 3.5 minutes, it’s so easy and safe, there is a sidewalk and a cross walk at the round-about that you cross to get to Diegos). Once there, we had a reasonably priced, phenomenal tasting, lunch and the waiter called a taxi for us when he saw that we were nearly finished with our meal; I had asked about this when he took our order; he spoke excellent english. (You need to pay for your meal in Pesos, the bottles of diet coke ran 20 pesos each, and 2 taco platter lunches cost us roughly $10 US, but paid in Pesos, something under 190 pesos total for the meal for 2). We left a generous tip as we were grateful for the assistance with getting a taxi for us as well as excellent, quick, food service. The taxi, you can only pay in pesos, for 2 was maybe about 100-150 pesos plus tip; we were so surprised by how low, we probably over-tipped, we expected $11 US plus tip and I think he quoted us like half that when we asked. We tipped because of the luggage handling. Unfortunately we didn’t write everything down; we were amazed by the massive savings, for taking that short walk to Diegos compared to the cost of a shuttle that would have stopped everywhere and dropped us at a hotel where we would still have to walk to the ferry. (Just know that taxis can’t pick up at the airport, but the walk was no big deal for us; with some heavy luggage with wheels, even for not so fit senior travelers, we made it fine). It was hard to get away from all of the pushy agents for the timeshares, etc. They will offer you anything; a lower price on the ferry, or a discount on the shuttle, etc. just to stop you and then you’re in for who knows how long of a timeshare pitch. I find it hard to be rude and just walk on by, but I also know that it will cost me precious time if I let them take me on their walk through the timeshare process; maybe save a few pennies on the ferry/transfer or tour, but lose a lot of precious vacation time in the process too… I get it, it’s their job, but I know I’m not buying a timeshare already… We arrived around 12:30 Cozumel time, and if we hadn’t stayed so long at Diegos’ enjoying the local chatter, (and we later learned that you have to ask for your check, they won’t just bring it out as that appears to seem rude in this culture), we could have been on the 2pm ferry. We arrived just as it was leaving. Once at the ferry pier, we bought 1 way ferry tickets at the window up on the pier, cost was about 163 pesos each. We tipped for our luggage, it was very easy. When we arrived in Playa del Carmen we had to get a taxi to Akumal, so we had a bicycle taxi carry our bags as we walked alongside for 2 blocks through the local park. It was a breeze. The bicycle taxi was around 100 pesos, I think, maybe much less, but we tipped generously as our luggage was heavy. We got to the taxi stand knowing what the charge should have been because of researching it and were able to get to Akumal for around 450-480 pesos. Know the going rate for taxis to your destination and confirm the cost before entering the cab. This has proved to keep us paying the posted rates and not being overcharged. (I know we would have been overcharged on the 2nd trip from Playa del Carmen to our Akumal hotel, the driver was distracted, trying to catch a quick bite, and agreed to the amount I quoted, but once we were underway, he called in to his dispatch to verify the amount. He obviously thought it was too low from his demeanor… Fortunately, the dispatcher concurred that the established rate was 450 pesos, so he didn’t jack up the rate when we got to the hotel. No habla espaniol, but with the help of the experts on the web, I am enjoying a wonderful vacation. (I do expect to make return trips to experience more of this area, so I intend to learn more Spanish, to get even more comfortable in the environment). Happy Travels to you… If I can do it by doing some research, you will do just as well because you’re also doing the research here. Keep asking questions. There are a lot of great people out here in cyberspace who like to help others.

Are the fairies to Cozumel wheelchair accessible?

Yes. You can take the ferry with a wheelchair.

Can you pay with US dollars?

Usually they will accept USD. Change will be in pesos. They set the rate for exchange since they are not obligated to exchange them.

we are arriving Xmas eve 2018. Does the operate this day. As well are the grocers open this day.

Grocery stores normal have limited hours on Christmas eve. Some close at 5pm.

does the cozumel ferry operate xmas eve 2018?

Yes the ferries normally run on Christmas eve.

We are traveling from Cozumel to playa del Carmen, then going to the Xcaret park, how far away is Xcaret and is Taxi the best way?

Yes a taxi is the best way to get to Xcaret from Playa’s ferry terminal. It is about a 11 minute ride. It should be about a 200 peso ride each way.

Does ferry companies are a real Cartel! They bomb each other out of buisness and now there is only two companies that are running, and they agreed on raising the prices, so now the “Mexico” is charging you 350 pesos round trip, and “Ultramar” wants 370 ( being more fency) unless you have a local (Cozumelian) ID. Locals pay less then half that price.

Would ban Cozumel until they stop rubbing you every where you go. These people have no brain, and they dont think whats gonna happend in10 years when only rich people willbuy them off…

Feel like being rubbed every where on the Riviera maya.

Can I use a credit card to pay for the ferry?

Hello Dorothy

You can use a credit card to pay for the ferry.

Are there webcams streaming near the ferry terminals that family back home can see us

There was one just south of the pier but it is not working. A little further down the beach is this webcam. https://www.webcamtaxi.com/en/mexico/quintana-roo/playa-del-carmen.html

Hi! If we buy ferry tickets online on the Winjet website, do we absolutely have to print the tickets or just showing the confirmation email is fine? Thanks!

Sorry we have not tried this process before. Knowing Mexico, you probably should print it out. It seems to be the land of paperwork. Sometimes businesses need the paper to count how many passengers are on board and there is nothing with just showing an email.

Ill be arriving on a Carnival Cruise in September but will be doing an excursion in Playa del Carmen what is the best way to get to the Ferry station? Do local buses Drive frequently by the port of entry in Cozumel? Or is it better to get a taxi?

There are taxis that line up and make it easy for people arriving. Some are vans that carpool guest to go to the ferry. There are three piers in Cozumel. One is very close to the ferry and you could walk. The other two you need to take a taxi.

We will be arriving in Cozumel on 8th January 2020 and we will be the only ship in port that day (Marella Discover 2). Do you think we will be docking at the pier next to the ferry terminal? We wish to visit Tulum so would there be taxis close to the ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen?

You will have to wait until the final assignment of dock is made. Taxis are available in Playa and will take you to Tulum. It will be about $40 USD each way.

One other question, please. Are there ATMs near the ferry terminals in Carmen and Cozumel? Thankyou

There are ATMS but we recommend going to a bank and using the ATM there. Most ATMS that stand alone are easier to hack and like many touristic places, people get their cards cloned. In a bank there is more security and cameras. We have a map here of banks near 5th Avenue. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1rV5OxVCSWWKNP2hzAIv—_VHd4&usp=sharing

Is a service dog allowed on the ferry?

Yes dogs are allowed. You can see websites for the ferry companies for the exact details. It depends on size and where they go on the ferries.

If I were to take the ADO bus from Cancun Airport to Playa. How far would the walk be from the bus station to Panama Jack? Trying to decide if it would be easier to take a shuttle or ADO. Thank you!

Hello Julie

The walk is about 15 minutes. Currently parts of 5th Avenue are under construction so bringing bags might be hard. It is possible to walk but a private transfer door to door is very nice to do. If you book round trip you get a discount. https://everythingplayadelcarmen.com/cancun-private-transfers/

I’m a woman traveling solo and want to spend a few days in Cancun and then a few more in Cozumel to dive. What would you recommend as the safest way to get from my hotel in Cancun to Playa del Carmen ferry? I’ve traveled around that area before but not alone recently. I’m staying in the northern part of the hotel zone in the beginning. And are there taxis right at the ferry terminal in Cozumel? I’m pretty sure the hotel I’m looking at does not provide any kind of transport. Thank you!

Thanks for the helpful information. We are planning our first trip over to Cozumel.

Planning a day trip to Cozumel from Cancun? Look no further! In this post, we will tell you the best way to visit Cozumel in one day.

One of the great things about Cancun is its close proximity to other locations throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. If you want to experience a new location, a day trip to Cozumel is a great option.

Compared to the Cancun hotel zone which is full of shopping, restaurants, amazing hotels, and nightlife, Cozumel has a more relaxed, island vibe.

Here you can stroll through the main plaza, snorkel in crystal-clear water, or take a drive around the island to see the undeveloped east side, sometimes called the “wild side.”

Where is Cozumel Located?

Cozumel is located in the Caribbean Sea about 20 km off the coast of Playa del Carmen. The island is 30 miles long and 10 miles wide.

Most of the island’s population lives in the town of San Miguel, which is located on the west side of the island. There are several resorts and restaurants dotting the west coast of Cozumel, going south from town.

However, most of the island, including the east side, is undeveloped. The east side of Cozumel is full of beaches, separated by rocky, iron shores areas, with a handful of small, rustic beach bars.

The waters off the western coast of Cozumel are filled with a spectacular coral reef system. This area is famous for its impressive coral structures that can reach up to 100 feet.

These reefs are filled with tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, and sharks. Cozumel has long been a scuba diver destination, and in recent years attracted non-divers too with its charming downtown , relaxing beach clubs, and other tourist attractions.

Do you want a change of pace from Cancun? A day trip to Cozumel is a great way to see a different part of Quintana Roo. Keep reading for ideas on how to spend your day in Cozumel and tips for traveling here.

Day Trip To Cozumel: An Overview

If you have not been there yet (or even if you have) Cozumel is a great spot to explore.

To get to Cozumel, you will need to take the ferry from Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen is located about 80 kilometers to the south of Cancun.

You can book a private shuttle to pick you up and take you to the ferry terminal in downtown Playa del Carmen.

A private shuttle is the fastest, and easiest, way to get to the ferry terminal, but you could also take the ADO public bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

If you have a rental car, you can drive it to Playa del Carmen and park it in one of the parking lots near the ferry.

It usually takes around one hour to get from Cancun to the Cozumel ferry dock, and you should give yourself some extra time to arrive and buy your tickets.

There are two ferry companies that operate the crossing from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. They rotate the hourly departures, so you should just buy a ticket for the next crossing.

Both ferry companies have comfortable boats with an open-air section or an indoor, air-conditioned, seating section. They even have live music during the day!

You can sit back and enjoy the 45-minute crossing. You should plan that the trip from Cancun to Cozumel will take you a few hours.

The ferry arrives in downtown San Miguel Cozumel, just in front of the main plaza. Here you are within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and all sorts of tour operators.

As you immediately exit the ferry, you will be offered plenty of options for snorkeling tours and car rentals.

My advice is to have an idea of what you would like to do in Cozumel before you get off the ferry, so you are not overwhelmed by the salespeople.

It is a good idea to book your tours in advance. More about that later in this post.

Avoid booking tours with street vendors, on either the Playa del Carmen or Cozumel side. Trusted sites such as viator.com will help guarantee you know exactly what you are receiving for your tour. On the street, right off the ferry, you can always find taxis, if you need one to take you to the marina or to a beach club.

There are many transportation options to get you from Cancun to the ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen, and the ferries to Cozumel depart every hour from 8am until 9pm.

Is one day in Cozumel enough?

Depending on what types of activities you like to do on vacation, you might wonder whether one day in Cozumel is enough. That depends on what your interests are.

There are many transportation options to get you from Cancun to the ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen, and the ferries to Cozumel depart every hour from 8 am until 9 pm.

If you are going to do a Cozumel day trip, it’s a great idea to get up early so you can make the most of your time on the island.

If you plan your day right, you can see a lot of the island in one day. But, if you think that one day is not enough time for you to see everything you would like to on the island, plan to book a hotel room here for a night or two.

Spending a few days in Cozumel will let you hit all the “must do” activities, such as snorkel or dive, visit some of the national parks, and see the “wild side” of the island. Cozumel has hotel options for all budgets and types of travelers.

There are several clean, but basic hotels just off the plaza. Or, you can find beachfront hotels that have more amenities slightly north or south of downtown.

Cozumel Day Trip Itineraries

Day trip to cozumel itinerary #1: best cozumel day trip itinerary for beach lovers.

If your perfect vacation day is spent relaxing on a beach, check out Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club. Mr. Sancho’s is located south of downtown San Miguel, at Carretera Costera Sur, kilometer 15.

The beach club is on a long stretch of beautiful white sand, with amazingly clear, blue water. It is an easy, sandy water entry, with the sand slowly sloping down to shallow water.

There are never any waves here, the water is almost always flat. This makes it an ideal spot to swim, especially for families with children.

Mr. Sancho’s is a popular spot for people visiting the island, so it is a good idea to make a reservation. They offer an all-inclusive package that is $68 for adults, $45 for teens 12-17 years old, and $40 for children 4-11 years old.

The package includes all-you-can-eat food from the buffet and menu,  and drinks, and the beach club is open from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday. You can also choose to do a pay-as-you-go option where you order from the menu.

The menu includes standard beach club favorites such as nachos, tacos, hamburgers, and ceviches. Mr. Sancho’s has beach umbrellas and loungers for guests to enjoy, as well as a large palapa with tables and chairs.

In addition to eating and drinking, there is plenty of fun stuff to do at Mr. Sancho’s.

You can purchase a pass for $14 to enjoy the Aqua Park which is full of all different size floating toys. You will feel like a kid again climbing on the iceberg, jumping on the water trampolines, and going down the slide.

If Aqua Park is not your thing, you can take an ATV tour or horseback ride along the beach and through the mangrove, go for a ride on wave runners, or check out views of the island from above while parasailing.

If you want to explore the coral reef sign up for a snorkel or scuba diving tour.

With all these activities to choose from at Mr. Sancho’s you can see why it’s recommended to cross over to Cozumel early in the day. You will want plenty of time for all these activities.

When you are ready to head back to town from Mr. Sancho’s there will be taxis available at the exit.

Day trip to Cozumel Itinerary #2: Cozumel Day Trip For Adventurers

If you want to make an adventure of your day exploring Cozumel, a great option is to rent a car and make a loop of the island. Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore wherever you want to go, and no time limits on how long you can stay at any given spot.

When you exit the ferry, there are plenty of car rental options within walking distance. You can choose between Jeeps, converted VW bugs, and an assortment of open beach cruisers.

Pick whatever makes you feel comfortable and enjoy the ride with the wind in your hair. Just remember, if you are in an open car you will want to be careful about how much sun you are getting- you may not feel like you are burning while you are driving along.

Renting a car in Cozumel

You can choose which direction you want to make your loop around the island- either heading south along the western coast first or crossing to the other side of the island. There is only one road that takes you around the island, so you should not have any problems getting lost and needing directions.

As a heads up – there is a bike path that runs along the other side of the island, make sure you do not drive your car in it or you will likely get a ticket from a waiting police officer. The bike path is closer to the ocean than the car road and is marked with signs that say no cars.

On your loop around the island you can stop at several different beach restaurants.

If you want the chance to hop in the water to snorkel check out a beach restaurant on the southern, western side of the island. Sky Reef and the Money Bar both have great snorkeling just in front of the restaurant.

If you want to check out a national park, Punta Sur Ecopark on the southern tip of the island is a great choice. Here you can climb the lighthouse for amazing views of the lagoon and ocean, and take a boat ride through the lagoon to see crocodiles.

When you get to the “other” side of the island you will find beautiful beaches separated by sections of rocky ironshore. If you want to get in the water here, use caution because the waves can be very strong.

On the east side of the island, there is hardly any development except for a few restaurants that are only open during the day. You can visit one of these restaurants, or find a section of the beach for yourself to relax on.

Just a tip – make sure to keep an eye on your valuables when you get out of the car. Unfortunately, many tourists have left their bags in the car and when they return after a quick photo on the beach their bag is gone.

On the transversal road, as you approach the other side of the island, there are small Maya ruins you can visit.

These ruins do not have any large pyramids and are much smaller than the nearby ruins on the mainland like Coba and Chichen Itza. However, if you are interested in Maya history, the guides give a very interesting tour.

As you arrive back in town you can finish your self-guided tour of the island with a cruise through town.

If you are feeling adventurous you can find tacos or other small, local favorite restaurants further off the main road.

Renting a car will give you the freedom to choose your own Cozumel adventure and explore the island at your own pace.

It takes around one hour to get from Tulum to Playa del Carmen.

Once in Playa del Carmen you can buy your ferry ticket and cross to the island.

From Isla Mujeres to Cozumel Day Trip – Is it worth it?

If you are staying on Isla Mujeres and want to visit another island, you might be wondering, is it worth it to take a day trip to Cozumel? This answer depends on you.

There is no direct ferry that takes you from Isla Mujeres to Cozumel. Instead, you will need to take the ferry from Isla Mujeres to either Puerto Juarez or the Cancun hotel zone.

From there you will need to get to Playa del Carmen, which takes around one hour or so, and then take another ferry to Cozumel.

The ferry to Cozumel takes between 35 and 45 minutes, depending on the weather conditions. For many people, this is a lot of steps to only spend the day in Cozumel. Instead of rushing to go back and forth in one day, you might be more comfortable booking a night’s stay in Cozumel.

Best Time to Visit Cozumel

Just like the rest of Quintana Roo, there is no bad time to visit Cozumel.

The winter months from November to April are the peak tourist season. Visitors love to come to this area in the winter because of the great weather – it is hot and sunny, but not overly humid or uncomfortably hot.

The winter months are also the dry season, so there is a lower chance of rain; however, it is still the tropics so a little bit of rain is always possible.

Because of the great weather, the winter months are the busiest time on the island. Starting in December and continuing until Easter, there are lots of visitors on the island.

If you want to stay away from crowds, visiting Cozumel in the low season may be a good option for you.

May to October is the rainy season, and the summer months of July and August can be very hot and humid.

But, if you plan to spend most of your vacation in the water, this can be a great time to visit. You can get a great deal on hotels and will enjoy a slow, peaceful atmosphere on the island.

September and October are peak hurricane seasons , so many travellers stay away from the island at this time; however, if you are willing to take the chance of having rainy weather or a storm, the reward can be great weather and empty beaches.

How To Get Around Cozumel

The Cozumel ferry pier is in the heart of downtown Cozumel. It is directly across the street from the main plaza, and within easy walking distance of lots of shops, restaurants, and small hotels.

If you plan to explore the downtown area, you can do so on foot.

If you need to go to the marina to get on a snorkel or dive boat or want to spend your day at one of the beach clubs, there is a taxi stand on the main road, just north of the ferry pier.

Here you can easily get a taxi, and check out the rate chart before getting in. The island is divided into zones, with set prices for each zone.

Double-check the rate, and do not forget to still confirm the rate with your driver before getting into the taxi.

All major beach restaurants and beach clubs will have taxis waiting, so whenever you want to leave, it will be easy to get back downtown.

If you want freedom to explore the island on your own, you can rent a car. This lets you drive around and stop at many different beaches.

If you plan to have a few margaritas ( or other alcoholic drinks ) do not rent a car.

You can also hire a taxi driver to act as your tour guide/driver and pay them by the hour.

They will drive you to different beach clubs, bars, and beaches, and wait for you. This gives you the freedom to have a few drinks without worrying about getting behind the wheel.

Best Things To Do In Cozumel

There are lots of fun activities to do in Cozumel. Whether you are a water lover, or prefer to spend your time on the sandy beach, you will find something you love.

Here are some of the most popular activities to do:

1. Join the best boat tour for amazing snorkeling

Cozumel is famous for its blue waters and stunning coral reefs. If you love to be in the water, you do not want to miss the chance to see this underwater world.

The best snorkeling tours will take you to a few shallow reefs. The water is so clear that you will have no problem looking down on the coral formations and have the chance to spot tropical fish, sea turtles, sharks, and rays.

Most snorkel tours end with a stop at El Cielo, a shallow sandbank known for its beautiful blue water, starfish, and friendly southern stingrays.

Rent a jeep or a scooter

You can rent a Jeep or scooter and make a loop around the island. You will enjoy cruising along the “other” side of the island.

Aside from a few rustic beach bars, the wild side of the island is undeveloped, so you can find a great spot on the beach to relax away from crowds.

If you rent a scooter, make sure to drive carefully and not go too fast.

2. Relax in a beach club

The east side of Cozumel is home to several great beach clubs. Find a great spot with a beach umbrella and have a relaxing day sipping on margaritas and enjoying snacks.

Many of the beach clubs have shore snorkeling, and will rent you snorkel equipment.

Whether you are looking for a relaxing beach club to quietly enjoy your day, or a more lively atmosphere with jet skis, parasailing, and inflatable water toys, you will be able to find a beach club to satisfy your desires.

3. Explore multiple beaches

Cozumel is an island, and there is no shortage of beaches to explore.

The best way to explore different beaches is to have transportation- you can either rent a car or scooter or hire a taxi by the hour to take you around.

Many of the best beaches on the west side of the island have hotels or beach clubs on them that you need to visit to access the beach.

The east side of the island is full of public beaches to explore. The most popular public beaches are marked with parking lots and lookout spots to take pictures.

Just be aware, most public beaches in Cozumel do not have lifeguards, so be careful of the waves and currents.

Playa Chen Rio has naturally protected shallow areas that are great to soak in or for kids to swim in. It is popular with locals and tourists and there are often food vendors there and you can rent umbrellas.

Cozumel Day Trip: FAQ

Is a day trip to cozumel worth it.

Yes! If you get moving early, you will have a lot of time to explore and enjoy the island.

Try to catch an early ferry to the island and have a plan for how to spend your day. It helps to book tours in advance so that you will not waste any time.

Check out viator.com for great tour options.

How many days should I stay in Cozumel?

This depends on you. If you want to have time to go snorkeling, scuba diving, visit the other side of the island, and spend time at a national park or beach club, you should book at least one night on the island.

If you are a scuba diver, Cozumel is a great place to spend a few days. There is a coral reef the entire length of the east side of the island, and you will want to get a few days to see different sections of it.

Can you just walk around Cozumel?

Yes. Cozumel is very safe. When you exit the ferry, you will be across the street from the main plaza.

There are often artisan markets here, and you can stroll around. In the downtown area there are countless restaurants and bars to enjoy too.

What is the prettiest beach in Cozumel?

There are many beautiful beaches in Cozumel, it is hard to pick one and say it is the prettiest.

The west side of the island has many beautiful, undeveloped beaches to enjoy. Check out Punta Morena and Chen Rio, both have protected areas that make it easier to swim.

The beaches inside Punta Sur Eco Beach Park have beautiful white sand and easy entry into the water.

The water is almost always clear and flat at Playa Palancar, making it beautiful and great to swim at.

In general, the water is calmer on the west side of the island, making it easier to swim. The beaches on the east side of the island are undeveloped, but the waves can be strong.

What is Cozumel known for?

Cozumel is known for its amazing coral reefs. It has long been a popular destination for scuba divers.

In recent years it has become more and more popular with families and all types of tourists. Whether they are a scuba diver or not, everyone who visits is amazed by the clear water and amazing blue colors of the ocean.

Which side of Cozumel is better?

That depends on what you are looking for.

The east side of the island, also known as the wild side, has almost no development, aside from a few rustic beach bars. Here you can find long stretches of empty beach to enjoy. The water entries can be rough, look out for rocks, and there are often waves.

The west side of the island has much more development and many of the best beaches are accessed through beach clubs or hotels. The water is almost always calm and flat, making it easier to swim or snorkel.

Is Cancun nicer than Cozumel?

Cancun and Cozumel are different, but it is impossible to say which is better.

Cancun has more restaurants, shopping , and nightlife, and is much, much bigger than Cozumel. Cozumel has Caribbean Island energy and is more casual and relaxed.

Tips for a Day Trip to Cozumel From Playa del Carmen (By a Local 2024)

day trip playa del carmen to cozumel

Are you thinking about taking a day trip to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen? Cozumel is a great place to visit for the day. The beaches usually have little to no seaweed and the snorkeling and scuba diving are amazing.

I’ve been living in Cozumel since 2022 and have made the trip from Playa del Carmen many times. I’ve also explored the island thoroughly so I can help make your day trip one to remember.

Day Trip to Cozumel From Playa del Carmen

Cozumel from the sea

Come along and uncover all that the island of Cozumel has to offer during a perfect day trip from Playa del Carmen!

Overview of Cozumel

Cozumel is a small island located off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. With its crystal turquoise waters, warm gulf breezes, and tropical landscape, it should come as no surprise that Cozumel is one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations.

During your day trip to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen, you can explore the island’s main city, San Miguel de Cozumel, which features stunning waterfront scenery as well as shopping and a variety of restaurants.

There are plenty of beautiful beaches to enjoy during your stay on the island where you can relax and soak up some sun or take a boat ride into the sea for a snorkeling adventure.

Note that many places in Cozumel don’t take credit cards so be sure to bring cash. There are ATM machines all over town if you need to withdraw some pesos.

Most people in Cozumel will accept US dollars, but please keep this in mind: Mexican banks will often not accept foreign money that is torn or damaged in any way. That means the person who got paid with this money is out those funds.

Best Time to Visit Cozumel

As someone who went to Cozumel for two months and decided to stay forever, I think it’s always the best time to visit Cozumel ! But if you want the best weather, December to April are the best.

It’s always warm but these months are least humid. The ocean is still warm enough for swimming and snorkeling. This is the high season, however, so expect some crowds.

For the least crowded season, visit in August or September . It can be pretty warm and humid, but the ocean is right there for a swim.

How to Get to Cozumel From Playa del Carmen

For anyone looking to enjoy a day trip to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen, the simplest option is to take the passenger ferry. The ferry runs all day, with the journey taking around 45 minutes each way.

The ferry terminal decorated for Carnaval.

There are two different ferries running between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel: Ultramar and Winjet . One or the other leaves every hour.

You can choose to sit inside where it’s air-conditioned, or on the top deck with amazing views and the wonderful sea air. The ferries have restrooms and snack bars.

Not only is taking the ferry practical, the ferry ride itself is also a great experience – you get some fantastic views of the Caribbean Sea and both cities from the sea.

Getting Around Cozumel

Cozumel is very easy to get around. You can walk, take a taxi, rent a car, book a private driver, or go on a tour.

Downtown Cozumel is very walkable. There are many shops and restaurants right across the street from the ferry terminal. You can also walk to several beach clubs, such as La Monina to the north or Jeanie’s to the south.

Taxis in Cozumel are plentiful and inexpensive. Taxis will be lined up when you get off the ferry. Be sure to agree on the price before you get in. If you’re getting dropped off someplace remote, get your taxi driver’s phone number so you can call to be picked up.

There are numerous car rental companies in Cozumel. Rental cars are usually pretty inexpensive. When you get off the ferry, walk straight ahead into the square. You’ll see booths for the different car rentals.

Private Driver

For the most flexibility, hire a private driver for the day. You’ll have your own private guide who can recommend places to go if you’d like. Taxi drivers will often agree to a half or full-day rate. Or go onto a Cozumel Facebook group and ask for a private driver.

Many tours will pick you up right from the ferry terminal. If you’re taking a tour be sure to check into this option.

Things to Do in Cozumel

If you’re looking to make the most of your day trip from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel, then you should definitely check out some of the amazing attractions and activities that Cozumel has to offer.

Since Cozumel relies on tourism as its primary source of income, you know there are some great tours available. You can take a tequila tour , visit the chocolate factory, rent e-bikes , go ziplining , or climb to the top of the lighthouse at Punta Sur.

A pool with palapas

Of course, water activities are where Cozumel really shines. Snorkeling and scuba diving are widely available, of course. You can also try snuba (a combination of snorkeling and scuba), or go snorkeling with a water scooter .

You can also spend a wonderful day wandering through town and visiting the souvenir shops. There are plenty of things to do right downtown, including a very nice museum of Cozumel’s history.

The problem is there’s so much to do, how do you choose? I’m here to help. I’ve been living in Cozumel for a while now and I’ve taken it upon myself to find the best things to do in Cozumel.

1. spend the day at a beach club.

Beach chairs on a Caribbean beach

Buccanos Beach Club Reserve your spot

Cozumel has some amazing beach bars and full-service beach clubs. One of the main attractions is the beautiful white sand beaches. Some of the more premium clubs may also provide water activities like snorkeling or parasailing for an additional fee. You can also get a massage on the beach if you’d like.

Beach chairs under palapas

Buccanos Beach Club is my number one favorite . The prices are reasonable and you get an amazing experience. If you’re looking for a great beach day, Buccanos is the one to choose.

5. Go Bar Hopping

Our tour guide on the Cozumel Bar Hop

Cozumel Bar Hop

I loved this tour! It’s a great way to see the east side of the island (aka the Wild Side). You travel in a van to several different bars and receive a complimentary shot at each one.

The tour guide gives you an overview of Cozumel on the way. It’s not a boring history lesson though – these guys are funny and make the drive across the island full of laughter.

The tour stops at four different bars, each with a different vibe. The stops may change, but this is where we went: First is Playa Punta Morena, a beautiful beach where you can hop in the water if you want. They have delicious food and very strong drinks.

Next is Coconuts, a very famous Wild Side bar. Coconuts is not for people who are easily offended. Their humor is definitely on the wild side! But their fresh conch ceviche is out of this world.

Plan to share because you get a very large portion. Coconuts’ drinks made Punta Morena’s taste weak…drink slowly and remember to hydrate!

People toasting with colorful cocktails

The third stop is El Pesdador. Here you can get a massage on the beach or take a quick nap in a hammock. They have the best coconut shrimp in the Caribbean. (I haven’t actually tried all the coconut shrimp in the Caribbean, but I’m confident it deserves the title.)

Finally is Rasta’s, a Jamaican-themed bar with amazing views. Rasta’s is famous for their peanut butter tequila, which was surprisingly good. Their rooftop patio is a great place to relax with your final beverages.

All in all, this is a great tour. Trust me, you won’t regret it! (Actually, you might if you don’t pace yourself…)

6. Take a Food Tour

Variety of Mexican dishes

Cozumel Food Tour

This is a fun way to see Cozumel and try some amazing dishes. The cost includes food and beverages (including alcohol). It’s the perfect way to spend your Cozumel day trip.

Experience the best of Cozumel’s local flavors. Sample specialty dishes like ceviche, tacos al pastor, and more. Get insight into traditional cooking methods and recipes as the knowledgeable guides share their expertise.

A variety of Mexican food

Enjoy drinks like margaritas, beer, or a tropical cocktail (or mocktail) while dining at five different restaurants handpicked by your tour guide.

End your day with sweet treats like churros or flan – the perfect finale for an unforgettable culinary adventure.

8. Visit the Mayan Ruins

Part of the Mayan ruins in Cozumel

Mayan Ruins and Beach Tour

The San Gervasio archaeological site in Cozumel may not be as large or well-known as Chichen Itza or the Tulum ruins, but it’s definitely worth visiting. See the ruins on a guided tour , then pop over to the beach for a refreshing swim. It’s the perfect combination of culture and fun.

The San Gervasio Mayan ruins are believed to be the remains of a ceremonial center that played an important role in the culture of ancient Maya. San Gervasio is said to be where the goddess of fertility, Ixchel, was worshipped.

The San Gervasio ruins are home to many sites such as the Great Plaza, a large open space that once served as a marketplace; various residences and temples; and an aqueduct that provided the city with water.

As you explore the area, you’ll learn more about the Mayan culture and its history.

Tips for Planning a Successful Day Trip to Cozumel From Playa del Carmen

Planning a day trip to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen can be fun, but also quite daunting. Since there are many aspects to organize, it’s important to do some research ahead of time.

The weather in Cozumel is wonderful year-round. Still, make sure to check the weather forecast for the day you plan to go. If there are high winds, the ports will be closed to small boats. This means snorkeling and scuba tours will be canceled.

It’s rare, but occasionally the ferries have to stop service when the wind is very bad. It happened recently and people got stranded on both sides overnight.

A beach in Cozumel

If you see high winds forecasted, you might want to plan your trip for another day.

Also, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get back to Playa del Carmen. Allow time for delays so you don’t miss the last ferry.

Check departure locations for tours. Some leave right from the ferry terminal. Others are within easy walking distance. Still others will require a taxi ride.

No place in Cozumel is very far, but traffic can get bad when there are several cruise ships in town (which is pretty much always).

A how-to guide for traveling from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen

Find the ride you need in.

Pack your swimsuit and sunscreen—traveling from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen is easy, and Playa’s vibrant beach scene awaits you.

Ferry pier in Playa del Carmen

Cozumel is Mexico’s largest Caribbean island, so it has a lot to offer visitors. But when the inevitable moment comes that you get curious about exploring the mainland Yucatan Penninsula, Playa del Carmen is a must-see. In fact, we can take the “see” right out of it—if you don’t want to fly, you must travel through Playa del Carmen to get to the mainland.

So, I’ll walk you through how to take the ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen so that you can breeze through the ferry ports like a pro.

  • Accounting for distance and timing

I’m not a mind reader, but I imagine one of your first questions is, “How far is Cozumel from Playa del Carmen ?”

The distance from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen is about four miles, which equates to an approximately 35-minute ferry ride. These times assume that you’re traveling from Cozumel’s ferry port to Playa del Carmen’s port.

In contrast, if you’re wondering how to get from the Cozumel airport to Playa del Carmen, you’ll need to tack on an extra 7 – 10 minutes to drive from Cozumel’s airport to the port. That’s assuming, of course, that you haven’t arranged a private jet to fly you from the Cozumel airport to Playa del Carmen.

  • The Cozumel to Playa del Carmen ferry schedule

The ferry route from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen is popular, so you’ll have plenty of choices for Playa del Carmen ferry times. Furthermore, two ferry companies run this route— Ultramar and Winjet .

day trip playa del carmen to cozumel

Depending on demand, these companies sometimes alternate their days of operation. However, you can rest assured that their ferry times from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen are similar. Furthermore, between the two of them, they run 365 days of the year.

Below is a typical timetable, which includes a combination of Winjet and Ultramar departure times.

If you’re renting a vehicle and would like to take it to the mainland, the Cozumel car ferry schedule differs from the times listed above. You’ll need to book a cargo ferry with either Ultramar or Transcaribe.

  • Pulling out your pesos

The Cozumel ferry cost to Playa del Carmen is an economical journey, especially given that the alternative is to book a private jet. There aren’t any commercial flights.

The Ultramar ferry from Cozumel starts at $13 per person and the Winjet ferry at $10 per person. Your ticket will be valid for any time with the company you purchase through, which you’ll see is especially advantageous once we talk about weather delays.

  • What to expect at the Cozumel ferry port

It’s impossible to get lost at the ferry port in Cozumel. Playa del Carmen is the destination for all ferries departing from there. If you’re reading between the lines, this means that a Cancun to Cozumel ferry doesn’t exist, nor can you travel to islands like Isla Mujeres and Holbox by ferry from Cozumel.

day trip playa del carmen to cozumel

As you line up for your ferry, you and your belongings will need to pass through a security check before boarding. It’s a quick one, and it feels like a laid-back version of an airport security screen.

Once you hop on your Cozumel ferry to Playa del Carmen, you’ll find informal open seating. So, pick a spot by a widow in the air conditioning or make your way to the second story where you can get a head start basking in the sunshine.

day trip playa del carmen to cozumel

Regardless of where you end up, keep an eye out for flying fish . They sometimes perform for ferry goers, hovering over the water for a mind-boggling amount of time.

  • Arriving at the Playa del Carmen ferry port

The Cozumel and Playa del Carmen ferry ports both sit in the heart of their respective towns. That means when you arrive in Playa, you’ll be within walking distance to most of its main attractions. In fact, the small street leading away from the ferry port intersects with Playa’s renowned 5th Avenue.

day trip playa del carmen to cozumel

If you’re traveling with luggage, you’ll be able to pick it up on the first floor of the ferry where it was stored when you boarded. The luggage area is informal and operates on an honor system.

  • Day tripping it

If you’re wondering about the possibility of taking a Playa del Carmen to Cozumel day trip or vice versa, the answer is a resounding yes. Between the many ferry departure times and central port locations, you can see many of these destination’s attractions in a day.

day trip playa del carmen to cozumel

Playa del Carmen is an especially great option for a day trip since you don’t even need to rent a car to see it well.

  • Juggling the weather

The trip from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen can be a beautiful ride on a day with little wind. If you suffer from seasickness, you might not even need to take medication on days like those. However, rain keeps the Yucatan the lush place it is, so it’s common for storms to arise, particularly in the afternoon.

Ultramar and Winjet take safety seriously. So, if unfavorable water conditions arise, they’ll delay their ferry departures. Sometimes these delays are brief, but other times they can do serious damage to your itinerary if you’re running on a tight schedule.

Needless to say, some people take the ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen to catch a flight home or to an onward destination. If that’s your plan, great! Just consider building in some buffer time in case the weather delays your ferry.

All that’s left for me to do here is to wish you buen viaje . When it comes to taking the ferry to Playa del Carmen, the journey is as stunning as the destination.
