Lisbon to Ericeira 2024: The Best Travel Hacks

' src=

Hello fellow explorer! Having called this small fishing village home for three years and journeyed countless times between these two gems, I’ve sampled it all: buses, cars, and yes, taxis. Personally, nothing beats the convenience of a private transfer, zipping through the scenic routes, and landing right in the midst of this amazing World Surfing Reserve. But hey, everyone has their own style. So, whether you’re looking for budget options, speed, or the freedom of your own vehicle (I’ve got some top-notch free parking tips for you), I’ve jotted down everything I’ve learned to ensure a smooth ride. Let’s dive in!

The Beautiful Praia do Sul, Ericeira

Table of Contents

Taxi from Lisbon to Ericeira

Travel time: 40m , €20-€55

Taking a taxi between Lisbon and Ericeira is the most convenient option and in my opinion the best way, it’s hard to beat a short drive in a taxi, especially when you’re laden with lots of luggage or wrapping up a late evening in Lisbon. Plus, when you split the fare with a couple of travel mates, it’s often more economical than you’d think. From my experience, taxi fares have ranged between a manageable €20 and €55, largely dependent on your starting point, departure times, and traffic conditions.

Starting from the airport tends to be a bit costlier than from the city’s heart. And as with most major cities, the time you choose to travel can impact the fare.

If you’re landing in Lisbon, it’s beneficial to schedule your taxi in advance. Not only does this help you avoid potential fare surges during peak landing times, but it also ensures a seamless transition from plane to car. I’ve often booked my taxi right after navigating through immigration, so by the time I reach the pickup area, my ride is ready.

In terms of taxi services, while Uber is well-known, Bolt often offers more competitive rates in Lisbon. Additionally, the FreeNow app is another taxi-hailing service worth checking out. Each platform varies in price, so it’s beneficial to compare them before making a decision.

One crucial tip I’d like to add: When traveling by taxi from Lisbon to Ericeira, always inform your friendly driver (I hope!) to take the toll road . Opting out of the tolls might seem like a cost-saving idea, but it can extend your journey by a good 30-45 minutes, and even longer during peak traffic times. So, for a quicker and more efficient ride, it’s a good idea to take the toll road.

Bus from Lisbon to Ericeira

Journey duration: 1hr-1.5hr

There’s no train service to Ericeira. Instead, the Carris Metropolitana operates a regular bus service from Lisbon’s Campo Grande bus terminal, it’s a convenient alternative for those not renting a car. This terminal is just outside the Campo Grande metro station (serviced by both green and yellow lines) and sits opposite the Alvalade XXI/Sporting Lisbon Stadium. Here is the location map for the bus terminal. Below, you’ll find a location map for Bay 22, the quickest direct bus route to Ericeira.

If you want to travel Ericeira to Lisbon the Ericeira bus stop is located outside the Campo Grande metro station in Lisbon, opposite the Sporting Lisbon Stadium.

Now, navigating the bus numbers can be slightly overwhelming, but let me simplify it for you:

  • Fastest Route & Best Option : The 2801 bus departing from Bay 22 ( Location Map ) is your speediest option, taking just 45 minutes via a highway to Ericeira, bypassing Mafra. The catch? It’s weekday-only for most of the year, though summer sees a few weekend services.
  • Mafra Detour: If Mafra’s on your list, take 2803 from bay 23; it stops there before terminating in Ericeira, totaling an hour for the full trip. On the other hand, the 2802 from the same bay only goes as far as Mafra, taking 35 minutes. For more frequent services to Mafra, especially on weekdays, hop on the 2804 from bay 24; it uses the highway partially and reaches Mafra in about 45 minutes.
  • Extended Journeys: The 2751 bus from bay 24 can be your ride to Ericeira but expect it to take about 90 minutes because of multiple stops. It’s not the top pick if you’re watching the clock.
  • Other Options: Bus 2805 heading to the village of Encarnação does stop in Mafra and starts from bay 24. Another choice from the same bay is 2704, reaching Ericeira bus terminal in approximately 70 minutes, including weekend services.

For the latest bus schedules and to view the Ericeira bus timetable, don’t forget to head to the Carris Metropolitan a website. Alternatively, you can use the Moovit app (IOS) (Android) .

Lisbon to Ericeira Bus Tickets

Purchasing a bus ticket for a single journey to Ericeira will cost you €6.40. You can buy this directly from the driver, but remember they only accept cash . If you’re short on notes, you’ll find an ATM at Campo Grande station. Planning to visit Mafra Palace? Give the driver a heads-up, and they’ll let you know the right stop. If you’re headed straight for Ericeira’s stunning beaches, simply stay on the bus until its final destination. Also, if you possess the monthly Navegante card , your ride is free.

Ericeira Bus Terminal

Upon arrival in Ericeira, you’ll find yourself at the Parque Intermodal da Ericeira more or less in the center of town. It’s situated on Rua Alto da Camacha and is roughly a 10 to 15-minute stroll from its most central beach, Praia dos Pescadores.

From Lisbon Airport to Ericeira Bus Terminal

Hitting Ericeira straight from your flight? Here’s a quick guide: From Lisbon Airport, grab the metro — the station’s conveniently located right outside the arrivals terminal. The airport’s metro station operates on the Red Line. You’ll need to switch to the Green Line at Alameda to reach Campo Grande. From there, choose your bus to Ericeira and you’re on your way!

Driving from Lisbon to Ericeira

Choosing to drive from Lisbon to Ericeira provides the most flexibility. Renting or owning a car lets you dictate your own schedule and immerse yourself in the scenic beauty of the journey.

Highway or No Highway? The Choice is Yours.

Via the A8 Highway: This is the faster option, taking about 30-45 minutes of portugal driving time. There’s a road toll involved, costing around €2.90 for a standard car. If you’re renting a car your rental agency might offer you two payment modes for tolls:

  • Pay-per-use: You’re billed for each toll you cross.
  • Flat fee upfront: A one-time payment gives you unlimited access to toll roads.

Ensure you’re clear on your rental agency’s toll policy during check-in. Many cars come equipped with the “Via Verde” system, which lets you breeze through tolls without stopping. If you opt for this, the toll fees will be billed to you later. A word of caution though: If your car doesn’t have Via Verde, keep some change handy. Some foreign credit cards don’t work at these toll booths, and you wouldn’t want to get stuck!

Toll booth: Ensure you have a functioning card or cash ready!

Off the Beaten Path: If you’re not in a rush and wish to soak in more of the Portuguese landscape, consider the non-highway route. Yes, it takes longer – a bit over an hour – but it’s an authentic experience many locals prefer. This route is also toll-free. To embark on this journey, just toggle the “avoid tolls” option on Google Maps.

Driving Tips & Essentials:

  • International Driver’s License: If you hail from outside the EU or UK, you might need an International Driver’s License to rent a car in Portugal. Check in advance to avoid any surprises.
  • Google Maps is Your Friend: It provides accurate directions and helps you sidestep tolls if that’s your preference.
  • Autumn & Winter Drives Can Be Tricky: If you’re venturing out at night during the colder months, especially on toll roads, brace yourself for potential challenges. As you near the coast, dense fog is likely to greet you, significantly reducing visibility. Certain stretches of the highway aren’t adequately lit, adding another layer of difficulty. It’s essential to stay alert and proceed with caution!

While driving in Portugal, you might notice a distinctive local trait: smaller roads often bustle with activity, while highways remain relatively free. This is a testament to the local preference to avoid tolls and take scenic routes. So, in a way, choosing the non-toll roads lets you experience Portugal the way the Portuguese do!

Parking in Ericeira

Finding a parking spot can be a challenge, especially during the bustling summer months. Try the municipal parking lots. They tend to be your most reliable option. A bit of a walk to your destination might be in order, but it’s a splendid way to explore the town centre.

For those in the know, the Continente offers ‘free parking’ – it’s my go-to, especially when Ericeira gets crowded in the summer. Another gem is Largo Conde Da Ericeira , which provides complimentary parking, although during peak season, it fills up quickly. Venturing towards the north side of Ericeira can also be rewarding. Plenty of free spots await you there.

Ericeira Beach Bus: Your Summer Ride

Navigated from Lisbon without wheels? Ericeira’s summer months present the Ericeira Beach Bus, offering a seamless way to experience the town without resorting to taxis. Normally, public transportation in Ericeira doesn’t cater to beach enthusiasts. That changes between the 15th of June and the 15th of September.

The Ericeira beach bus

This public bus operates hourly from 9:10 am to 8:10 pm, starting from the bus terminal above Ericeira. It’s a great option offering a quick drive to most places, covering popular spots from Foz do Lizandro in the south to Ribeira Dilhas in the north across 38 stops. However, it bypasses the beautiful beaches of São Julião and north of Ribeira.

A one-way ticket is priced at 1 Eur. Frequent riders can opt for a 10-ride or monthly pass. Added bonuses? Enjoy onboard wifi and a free trailer for your surfboard.

For precise timings, Apple users can access the Ericeira Beach Bus app (only IOS), which provides real-time GPS tracking of the bus.

And there you have it! From the bustling streets of Lisbon to the serene vibes of Ericeira, you’re all set. Whether you’re chasing the waves, craving some seafood, or just eager to wander, Ericeira embraces you with open arms.

Lisbon to Ericeira: An Easy Transport Guide For 2024

Traveling to Ericeira in the near future? Then you are probably flying into Lisbon and you will need to get from Lisbon to Ericeira. I have put together this Lisbon to Ericeira transport guide so you won’t need to sort out the options yourself. Ericeira is a great place to visit in Portugal, and you will surely enjoy it. Here we go!

Beaches in Ericeira: Praia Dos Pescadores

Praia dos Pescadores, Ericeira, Portugal

Ericeira is a small fishing village in Portugal located 50 kilometers from the center of Lisbon. It is known for being a World Surfing Reserve and its beautiful cobblestone streets with white and blue colored houses.

Ericeira is starting to get on the tourist radar and there has been a huge influx of ex-pats in recent years. Gentrification has become a problem here because property prices have risen to a crazy amount of money (around € 1000/month for a simple apartment). This has caused local villagers to have to leave their hometown not being able to pay these high rental prices.

As a conscious traveler , it is important to be aware of this. Ericeira is a great place to visit, but if you go there, make sure to consume locally. Go to the local Portuguese bakery, a local restaurant, and choose locally-owned accommodation so your money benefits the local community and not a smart businessman who sees money in exploiting the success of this town.

That said, let’s start with what you came here for! Here are the transport options on how to get to Ericeira from Lisbon.

How to get from Lisbon to Ericeira

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, Portugal.

It is relatively easy to get from Lisbon to Ericeira. Depending on your wishes there are five ways you can get to Ericeira from Lisbon.

Do note that landmarks and some beaches can be quite far away from the center of Ericeira. In fact, the best beaches of Ericeira or out of the city center and getting there will require a small drive.

There is a beach bus service in the summer however, that will get you to nearby beaches. It drives on and off from Foz do Lizandro to Praia de Ribeira d’Ilhas but won’t reach beaches like Praia de Sao Lourenço and Coxos beach which were my personal favorites.

In the vicinity of Ericeira are some great landmarks only a short drive away like the Mafra Palace, the UNESCO heritage town of Sintra, and the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

It’s important to think about what you want to do during your stay in Ericeira. If it’s just lazing on the nearby beaches, eating great vegan food in the center of Ericeira , and taking a regular surf lesson and yoga class you’ll be fine without a car. If you want to explore the nearby region, you might want to consider renting a car.

Here are five possible ways to get from Ericeira to Lisbon!

Bus from Lisbon to Ericeira

Lisbon to Ericeira: Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon to Ericeira bus

The most economical way to travel from Lisbon to Ericeira is by taking the public bus operated by Carris Metropolitana. Since there is no railroad from Lisbon to Ericeira, it is the only form of public transport and the most ecological way to travel.

The company operating the buses used to be Mafrense but this changed in December 2022. You will still see outdated guides online mentioning Mafrense but note that this has changed.

From your location in Lisbon, make your way to the Campo Grande Bus Station. This is an area of bus bays right next to the Campo Grande Metro/train station. Buses will leave Campo Grande for Ericeira multiple times a day. All the buses leave for Ericeira from the same bays (22 to 24). You can buy your ticket from the driver, which will cost around € 6,40.

The Lisbon to Ericeira bus timetable is quite irregular. you can find the routes and timetables on the website of the Carris Metropolitana . As you can see, some buses take much longer to get to Ericeira than others. That is because some buses take the highway for a small part of the road and others don’t. Depending on which bus you take, your travel time will take around 60 minutes to one hour and 40 minutes.

The bus will drop you off at the Ericeira bus terminal called the “Rodoviario Bus Station”. From there, it’s a 15-minute downhill walk to the center. Alternatively, you can call a taxi.

Lisbon to Ericeira by Blablacar

Blablacar is another good option to get from Lisbon to Ericeira. Blablacar is an app where locals can advertise a car ride when they travel from one city or town to another. It’s a great way for drivers to share the gas and a cheap way for travelers to travel. It’s a bit like hitchhiking but in a controlled way.

A ride with a Blablacar driver should cost around € 7. There won’t be drivers available on all the days of the week but it’s worth checking this out before you take the public bus because it will get you to Ericeira faster and for a better price.

Lisbon to Ericeira by Uber or Bolt

One of the most convenient ways to get from Lisbon to Ericeira is by a taxi app like Uber or Bolt. This is especially convenient if want to get to Ericeira from the airport.

The downside of using a taxi app is that it is a lot more expensive than using the public bus. Expect to pay around € 40 to get to Ericeira from Lisbon. of course, if you are a party of four people, this is the least time-consuming and most economical option!

Note that Uber is slightly more expensive than Bolt so I suggest downloading Bolt to get the best prices.

Lisbon to Ericeira by car

rental car in Portugal

Lisbon Ericeira Rental car in Portugal .

If you want to explore some landmarks in the vicinity of Ericeira or if you prefer to stay outside the city center renting a car is the best way to get around and to get from Lisbon to Ericeira.

Rental cars are widely available at the airport and it’s a good idea to book in advance. Since we wanted to explore some places around Ericeira and were staying in a small town a few kilometers away from Ericeira we opted to rent a car.

After doing quite some research I found the cheapest prices using Discover Cars . We paid around €40 per day + gas in the month of September.

Lisbon to Ericeira tours

Ericeira, Portugal

The streets of Ericeira, Portugal.

If you have little time on your hands you might want to consider visiting Ericeira on a day trip from Lisbon. Public tours, as well as private tours, can be booked through Get Your Guide , and prices range from € 65 for a public tour to € 380 for a private tour.

How to get from Lisbon airport to Ericeira

If you want to take the public bus to Ericeira, there are two ways to get from the airport to Campo Grande Bus Station. The first and most convenient option is to hire an Uber or Bolt to get you to Campo Grande. However, if you are traveling on a budget, this might be an expensive option.

The cheapest way to get from the airport to Campo Grande is to take the subway. Take the red line first to Alameda Station. At Alameda Station, transfer to the green line which stops at Campo Grande Metro Station. This will take around 40 minutes and a single ticket costs only € 1,50.

Where to stay in Ericeira

beach in Ericeira: Praia de Sao Lourenço

Sao Lourenço beach, Ericeira, Portugal.

If you are planning to visit Ericeira you are probably wondering what the best places to stay are. It highly depends on your wishes of course and if you rather want to be in the hustle and bustle of the town center or somewhere in the outskirts where it’s quieter.

I’ll list a few options here and I will indicate who will enjoy these types of accommodation:

  • Casa Ribamar: If you like to have a whole place to yourself then this Airbnb in Ribamar , rented out by Carina who lives in Ericeira is a great choice. The house is beautifully decorated and you can truly find anything you need in the house. The terrace is perfect for enjoying breakfast and dinner while you can watch authentic Portuguese life slowly passing by. Good for travelers who like privacy and traditional Portuguese villages.
  • Sandhi house : Sandhi house is a beautiful guesthouse in the center of Ericeira near the beach. It offers only five rooms and a tranquil and peaceful setting with a cute terrace. You can participate in yoga classes or enjoy a relaxing massage. Multi-day well-being packages are on offer. Good for travelers who are looking for a well-being getaway .
  • Omassim Guesthouse : This guesthouse with a pool and cute rooms is located between Santo Isidoro and Ribamar and offers different surf and yoga packages. Depending on your wishes you can choose if you want to take surf lessons, yoga classes, or a mix of both with delicious vegetarian food (and vegan upon request) included. Good for travelers who like package deals and don’t want to do a lot of research themselves .

While there are no trains heading to Ericeira there is the Lisbon to Ericeira bus. The bus from Lisbon leaves from the Campo Grande bus terminal which is right next to the Campo Grande metro train station (accessible on the green and yellow metro lines).

There are buses running throughout the day with roughly 2 buses every hour from, early morning until late at night with the last bus leaving around midnight. So, it’s a pretty good bus service overall.

You’ll want to look for bus number 2740 which takes the highway towards Ericeira and is run by Carris Metropolitana. This is one of the fastest buses though there are others which go to Ericeira and take more countryside routes.

You can see the Lisbon to Ericeira bus timetable here.

If you want to go directly to Ericeira after arriving at the airport in Lisbon, there are a couple of options.

The first option is to take public transport straight from the airport. To do this, take the metro to the Campo Grande metro station then walk to the bus station and then get the bus from there (as above).

Guided tours from Lisbon to Ericeira day trip

  • Average price:  €72 per person

  • Where to book:   GetYourGuide

If you’re looking for a day trip to Ericeira from Lisbon and don’t want to have to deal with organising transport yourself, then booking a guided tour to Ericeira from Lisbon is a great option.

One of the best-guided tours from Lisbon to Ericeira is the group tour which takes you to Ericeira, Mafra Palace and some of the other villages along this beautiful stretch of coastline.

Having a guide is great since you’ll learn about the history and culture of the area and meet some other travellers too.

Alternatively, you can book onto a privately guided tour which is perfect if you’re a family or want a 1:1 experience. You’ll make similar stops to the tour above but there’s a bit more flexibility in what you end up doing.

Driving from Lisbon to Ericeira

moorish castle sintra

  • Average price:  Anywhere from €10-50 a day + gas (+ tolls)
  • Lisbon to Ericeira drive time:  45 minutes
  • Where to book:   DiscoverCars.com or RentalCars . I like to use a mix of the two to find the best deal.

If you’re looking for the most flexible option then driving a rental car to Ericeira from Lisbon is the best way to go.

It’s an easy journey that takes about 45 minutes on the A8 highway if you don’t mind paying the tolls.

Your car rental company will either charge you per toll usage or charge you a flat fee upfront that allows you to use the toll roads. Ask them if they don’t tell you about it at check-in.

However, it’s pretty easy to take the non-highway toll routes to avoid the tolls completely. This takes a bit longer (a little over an hour), but this is how I travelled when driving around Portugal .

To drive without tolls, you can simply select the “avoid tolls” option on Google Maps and follow the directions.

Also, if you’re not from the UK or an EU country, you may need an International Driver’s License to rent a car.

Make sure to book your car rental in advance as that’s how you find the cheapest deals. They can be pretty pricey if you leave it until the last minute!

Also, if you’re driving, you might want to check out places like Cascais and Cabo da Roca , or Sintra along the way!

I use comparison sites like DiscoverCars and RentalCars to book my car rentals as it’s easy to check prices and compare the best deals!

It’s not always the cheapest, but if you’re travelling with at least one other person, you can split the cost, which makes it quite affordable.

Bolt is like Uber, but it’s usually cheaper in Portugal so is a good option as you’re exploring the country.

We’ve used Bolt many times in Portugal, and it’s been great every time. So, if you’re looking for a ride from Lisbon to Ericeira, especially from the airport, give Bolt a try.

Lisbon to Ericeira by Blablacar

  • Average price:  Anywhere from €10-50 a day + gas (price varies)

Another option to travel from Lisbon to Ericeira is BlaBlaCar which is a car-sharing app and website where people offer rides when they’re travelling between cities or towns. It’s like hitchhiking but in a safer and more organized way.

When you ride with a BlaBlaCar driver, it usually costs around €7. Not all drivers will be available every day, so it’s a good idea to check the app beforehand which you can do on Omio .

Taking a BlaBlaCar can be faster and cheaper than the public bus, so it’s worth considering if you want to reach Ericeira quickly and save some money.

How to Get to Ericeira from Lisbon

The beach resort of Ericeira has been one of the most popular Lisbon day trips for many Lisbon residents since the 1940s, and so naturally getting from the Portuguese capital to this slice of beachside fun is easy.

By car from Lisbon to Ericeira

Getting from Lisbon to Ericeira by car is easy. It’s a simple matter of a 45-minute drive along highway A8. The one thing to note is that the highway is tolled, so you will have to pay around three euros to use the road.

There is a non-toll highway that can take you from Lisbon to Ericeira, but it takes upwards of an hour; if you’re in no rush and feel like taking it easy, then maybe this would be a good option for you.

The other thing to mention is parking when you arrive. There is free parking around Ericeira, but depending on the season it might be full and you’ll end up having to pay for parking.

By train from Lisbon to Ericeira

There are no trains to Ericeira – unfortunately for all the train fans out there.

By bus from Lisbon to Ericeira

There is a regular bus service that connects Lisbon with Ericeira.

It leaves from the Campo Grande bus terminal in Lisbon, which is situated right outside the Campo Grande metro station (connected to the rest of the city via the Green and Yellow metro lines).

Buses are fairly frequent. The fastest journey via bus takes roughly 45 minutes and takes the highway route. The other option is a slower route that takes an hour and a half and features more stops along the way.

Tickets are purchased from the driver. These cost 6.40 Euros.

You should know that the bus station in Ericeira (Parque Intermodal de Ericeira) is actually around a 10 minute walk from both the centre of town and the beach.

So don’t come dressed ready for the beach right away, or with lots of luggage; go for sturdy sandals instead of flip flops.

With an Ericeira a tour from Lisbon

The other way to get from Lisbon to Ericeira is via a tour. This is possibly the most convenient way to get there, especially if you don’t like the idea of figuring out bus timetables, or if you can’t drive.

Options include both private and group tours.

From Lisbon: Coastal Villages & Mafra Palace Guided Tour – For example, this group tour takes you not only to Ericeira, but also to visit the Mafra Palace, as well as other villages along this slice of Portugal’s coastline.

Your guide will highlight the history of the area and showcase the culture in an interesting way.   It’s a good option if you want to get a little more insight into the region, or if you want to mingle with other travellers on your trip, too.

Ericeira & Mafra Private Trip From Lisbon – A private tour, however, is a one-to-one experience.

This full day trip sees you picked up directly from your hotel and whisked to the charming streets of Ericeira; you’ll stop at a few other destinations along the way (e.g. Mafra Palace).

Having a guide all to yourself will really enrich the experience.

Best things to see and do in Ericeira

If you choose to do a guided tour, a lot of the places I’ve chosen below will be included in a trip from Lisbon to Ericeira.

However, if you’re travelling to Ericeira independently, you should make sure to put these spots on your itinerary.

Learn to surf!

Ericeira is often dubbed Portugal’s surfing capital, and Europe’s only World Surfing Reserve. It truly is a special place for surfing.

Since it’s a year-round surfing destination, it’s a top spot for those wanting to spend the day catching waves.

Not only is it great for intermediate level and expert surfers, but beginners can also enjoy it. You can also join a surf lesson and learn to surf here if you don’t already know how.

To give you some inspiration for your surf adventures, or a place to hit up first before you explore for yourself, I surfed at Praia de Ribeira d’Ilhas.

This is a protected surf spot in the north of town, complete with a flat reef, that’s suitable for all intermediate and advanced surfers.

This is often cited as one of the best right reef breaks in all of Europe, and is known for hosting top international surfing competitions. But if you’re looking for something that’s suitable for beginners, there’s the beautiful Praia do Sul.

Situated in the south of town, this beach boasts breaks that come from left and right. The great conditions make it a prime spot for beginners.

Explore the Old Town centre

Ericeira boasts some seriously charming architecture: nowhere more so than in its beautiful Old Town.

Dating back to the 12th century, this historic part of the city is awash with winding cobbled streets, tiny plazas with elaborate churches, whitewashed houses and colourful flowers.

Simply spending your time exploring this slice of Ericeira will offer up an enchanting window into the past. But it’s all still very much alive.

Down almost every street you’ll find small eateries, hidden shops and cafes, often with terrace seating spilling out onto the pavement.

One of the best parts of Ericeira’s Old Town is the fact that it is pedestrianised, so you’re safe to wander at your leisure, snapping pictures of the blue and white buildings with their terracotta roofs.

Taste the delicious seafood cuisine

Being a long-established seafaring town, it won’t surprise you to learn that Ericeira is still a working fishing port to this day.

This means, of course, that many of its restaurants serve up fish from the morning’s catch, and the city has become well known for its excellent seafood.

First up, you can head to the Municipal Market in the north of town to see the array of local fish on sale. But aside from just looking at the seafood on display, you should sample it, too.

One spot I particularly loved is Mar d’Areia. As well as a smorgasbord of seafood on offer, there’s also great wine to sample, and seating inside and outside for sunny days.

Visit the nearby Mafra National Palace

Mafra National Palace, or simply just Mafra Palace, is a grand royal landmark situated close to town. Constructed under King John V of Portugal in 1717, the palace is a masterclass in Baroque and Neoclassical architecture.

It’s a sprawling piece of architectural art, featuring an imposing limestone facade and interiors to wow any visitor.

Royal apartments here ooze opulence, with silk rugs, rich artwork and plenty of gilded ornamentation. The palace itself is enormous; there are literally hundreds of rooms to visit.

More than just a royal palace, however, Mafra was also the site of a convent and basilica. It’s even recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Chill at the beach

While the beaches at Ericeira may be great for surfing, they’re also a fantastic place to simply spend time relaxing by the sea. They’re not as famous as the beaches in the Algarve , but they’re just as beautiful.

In fact, Ericeira has multiple sandy beaches to its name, so there’s plenty of space for everyone to find a spot on the sand.

The most central beach is Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman’s Beach); named for its colourful fishing boats, it features a scenic harbour and boasts calm water, making it great for families with children.

The small beach in the centre of town, Praia do Norte, may be compact but the central location means it’s very busy.

For something a little more remote, there’s the curving crescent of sand backed by cliffs at Praia do São Sebastião, while Praia de Ribeira d’Ilhas – where the surfing championships take place – is another scenic option for lazy days on the sand.

Trek along the cliffs

Much of Ericeira is separated from its beaches by a dramatic coastline of cliffs, making it prime hiking country.

Old trails used by fishermen in days gone by wind along this rugged shoreline, taking in the natural scenery and allowing for some breathtaking sea views.

You could embark on a short coastal walk, or head out on a more intrepid hike between Ericeira and Sintra .

Whatever you do, make sure you have some comfortable footwear suitable for walking, wear a cap to protect your face, take a water bottle and make sure you’re wearing your swimsuit for a much needed post-hike cool-off in the sea.

Best Ericeira day tours

I’ve already included some information on how to get from Lisbon to Ericeira, and a few cool things to do, so you can travel independently if you want.

But if you want to take the stress out of travel, you can definitely enjoy an organised tour.

Is doing an Ericeira day trip worth it?

Yes. It’s definitely always nice to escape the city for some sun, surf and sand. It’s also not too far from Lisbon, so you’ll have ample time to explore and see the sights.

If you drive there, or join a tour, you also get to stop by Mafra Palace on your way.

If you’ve got time, however, spending a few nights in Ericeira is totally worth it – especially if you like the chilled vibe of surfing towns.

We spent a night in Ericeira and loved exploring the Old Town at night, as it came alive with both tourists and locals alike.

If you don’t have long in Portugal you could also still extend your day trip and spend a night in Ericeira, and then from then continue your Portugal itinerary and drive north to Porto and the Douro Valley .

What to pack for your Ericeira day trip

Besides the usual travel essentials , there isn’t anything specific that you absolutely need to pack for a Ericeira day trip, however here are some useful things you don’t want to forget!

Camera – Given how beautiful Ericeira is, you want to make sure you capture it in all its beauty!

Reusable water bottle – Especially if you plan to do a lot of walking, bring a bottle you can refill and ensure you stay hydrated.

Walking shoes – I always walk loads when I’m travelling, and I wouldn’t be able to do so without comfortable shoes. Make sure to pack shoes you can walk in a lot!

Fast drying towel  – If you’re planning to spend some time on the beach in Ericeira, you’ll need a beach towel! I like these fast drying ones since they don’t take up much space and won’t stay wet in the car for hours.

Lisbon to Ericeira – How to Get to Ericeira from Lisbon

Lisbon to ericeira by public transport.

Getting from Lisbon to Ericeira by public transport is normally quite easy and fast. Buses run about once every hour from Campo Grande – the main bus terminal in Lisbon.

Depending on which bus you take the journey will last between 45 min and 1h 30 min. The fast buses take the highway all the way, while the slow buses will take the country road and make lots of stops on the way. Depending on which day, the last bus for Ericeira leaves sometime between 11 and 12 pm.

The price for a one-way journey is 6.50 Eur. If you carry a board bag or any other luggage you can easily store it in the luggage compartment of the bus without extra charge.

The Bus Time Table

You can find the  bus time tables here . However, this website is not the easiest to use and some people recommend the moovit app instead. Also, google maps should provide a reasonable estimation of the correct departure times.

We’re all hoping that the Carris Metropolitana ( who took over the bus contract in the spring of 2023) will create a more user-friendly experience soon.

Once you arrive to the Ericeira bus terminal, the best way to get to your accommodation is to use Uber, Bolt (same as Uber but normally a bit cheaper) or a local taxi company. Ericeira 24h being our personal favorite among the local taxi companies

Getting to Campo Grande from the Airport

The easiest way to get to Campo Grande from the airport by public transport is to take the subway. First you take it to the Alameda Station. At Alameda you switch to the green line towards Campo Grande. You should calculate with up to 45 min for the journey.

Lisbon to Ericeira by Car

Going by highway the car journey from Lisbon to Ericeira takes between 30- 45 min. For a normal car the road toll is 2.90 Eur. When you rent a car you normally pay a little bit extra to have the automatic road toll system called Via Verde. With this attached to your car, you can just pass straight through the road tolls and pay them later.

If you don’t have Via Verde on your car, you should make sure to carry change. We’ve heard of people getting stuck at the road tolls in the middle of the night due to road toll credit card readers being unable to read foreign credit cards.

You can also avoid the road toll by going to Ericeira on the non-highway road. However, then your journey will take you 1h +. If you are planning on road tripping in Portugal, you will actually notice that this is the Portuguese way of doing it. The (at some places) expensive high way road tolls are often reflected in heavily trafficked smaller roads and close to empty highways.

To drive the Portuguese way, you just choose avoid road tolls on google maps, and follow the directions.

Lisbon to Ericeira by Uber or Bolt

Another great way of getting from Lisbon to Ericeira is to use the applications Uber or Bolt. Bolt is the cheaper version of Uber here in Portugal. The price with bolt should be around 30 – 40 Euros and the Uber price 40-50 Euros.

The bus station in Ericeira (Parque Intermodal da Ericeira) is located around 1,5 kilometres from the beach , and the road to the town centre is all downhill. You might want to grab an Uber or Bolt to get from the station to your accommodation.

Ericeira looks stunning, I’ve definitely added it to my list. Thanks for sharing all of these great tips and information.

Anytime Ashley, I hope you get to visit!

In all the times we have visited Lisbon, we have not yet discovered Ericeira. A 40 minute drive would be great to see this lovely beach town. It looks like a lovely town to wander. And we do love to watch surfers in action! Great to know we can park the car and visit different beaches on the beach bus!

Sounds like a plan for your next trip to Portugal 🙂

Portugal is on my bucket list so I’m saving everything I can now to prepare for when it’s time to start planning my trip. Thank you so much for these great tips. I love the beach so this will be helpful.

Ooooooh I hope you can start planning soon 🙂

Never heard of Ericeira, such a pretty place. Great adventure to surf here..

Fully agree! I can´t surf, but if I would take classes, it would probably be here.

I still remember the beautiful beaches of Ericiera. It was a great experience being there.

The best ways to get from lisbon to ericeira.

One of the most beautiful cities in Portugal is the famous surfing and beach town of Ericeira. It’s become a popular place over the years especially with surf camps like Lapoint popping up and all the other fun things there are to do in Ericeira .

One of the nice things about this coastal Paradise is the fact that you can go from Lisbon to Ericeira as a day trip if you want to just get out and see it. We do, however, recommend spending some time in Ericeira if you’re able to. You will absolutely love this little coastal town.

There are so many different ways to get from Lisbon to Ericeira so let’s explore the different options below so you can see which one works best for you.

5 easy ways to get from Lisbon to Ericeira

Whether you’re road-tripping up the Silver Coast from Lisbon or just doing a day trip you’re going to love Ericeira.

Let’s get right into all the different options on how to get between the two cities. In this post, you will find the different options, ticket prices, links to sites where you can book from, and reasons why we recommend each option.

Amazing coastline in Ericeira.

Lisbon to Ericeira by bus

Average price: €4.5 one way Average time: Roughly 1 to 1.5 hours Convenience: 4/5 Where to book: Rome2Rio

Taking the bus from Lisbon to Ericeira is definitely one of the more convenient and cheapest ways to get there.

There is no other type of public transport that goes there so if you’re looking for a cheap and fairly convenient way to get there then the bus is your best option.

The only reason we don’t rate this a 5/5 is because you do have to ride the metro to get to the bus station and it also takes 1 to 1.5 hours to get there. But it is the most affordable option so if you don’t mind public transport then this might be the best option for you.

Book your bus to Ericeira here.

Lisbon to Ericeira by rental car

Average price: Anywhere from €10-50 a day + gas (price varies) Average time: 45 minutes Convenience: 4/5 Where to book: DiscoverCars

Even though public transport is quite cheap in Portugal sometimes it’s nice to have your own car to travel between cities like Lisbon and Ericeira.

If you do rent a car, we recommend using DiscoverCars and then picking it up from the Lisbon Airport since it’s usually the cheapest option.

We like using Discover because it shows you the different rental companies and also compares the prices and what they have to offer for those prices. It really just makes renting a car easy.

We’ve used them multiple times both in Portugal, Italy, and New Zealand and have never run into any issues – and the customer support has always been great when we’ve had to amend our bookings!

We want to mention here that there are toll fees when driving on Portuguese highways. Even though it’s not expensive (€2.9 each way between Lisbon and Ericeira) it’s another fee to take into account for the price of your car rental.

There are options to avoid the tolls by taking secondary roads which we did quite often while we were travelling in our rental van .

Another good tip is that the further you book the car rental in advance the more likely you are to get a better discount.

Book your rental car from Lisbon here.

Picture of a car rental from Lisbon to Lagos, Portugal.

PS: There’s are some great stops along the way from Lisbon to Ericeira such as Sintra and Cabo da Roca . Sintra is pretty much on the road and Cabo da Roca is just a slight detour off the road.

Lisbon to Ericeira by Bolt (ride-hailing)

Average price: €30-40 one way (prices vary depending on traffic) Average time: 45 minutes Convenience: 4.5/5 Where to book: Bolt App

Using Bolt is not the cheapest option between Lisbon and Ericeira but if there are at least two of you then this may be a good option since you can split the cost and it’s super convenient.

The reason we mention Bolt instead of Uber is the fact that Bolt is 10-20% cheaper in Portugal.

We’ve used Bolt multiple times in Portugal and it’s always been a pleasant experience. If you’re looking for a one-way trip from Lisbon to Ericeira and want to get there as quickly as possible from the airport then give Bolt a go.

If you’ve never heard of Bolt it’s basically just a competitor of Uber. We’re not sure why but it’s cheaper in Portugal. Most drivers are Uber and Bolt drivers so you’re basically getting the exact same service just under a different app.

Book your Bolt here.

Lisbon to Ericeira by campervan

Average price: €60 to 160 per day depending on the season ( price guide here ) Average time: 45 minutes Convenience: 5/5 Where to book: Portugal by Van

If you get the opportunity to travel Portugal by Van then do it! This is what we did, and we loved it! It’s a great way to see the country and a convenient way to stay in one spot for multiple days at a time.

Portugal is super camping-friendly and there are tons of great campsites along the Silver Coast. Funny thing: Ericeira Camping campground is one of our favourite campsites in the country!

If you pick up your campervan in Lisbon you can drive directly to Ericeira in less than an hour, or you can make some stops along the way like in Sintra and Cabo da Roca for sunset (like we did) before you make your way up to Ericeira.

Of course, if you’re doing just a day trip from Lisbon to Ericeira then this isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for a longer period of time then renting a campervan might be the best option.

Book your Portugal by Van here .

Lisbon to Ericeira on a guided tour

Average price: $70 and up (you can find different options here ) Average time: Full day Convenience: 5/5 Where to book: GetYourGuide

Last but not least, there is always the option of going to Ericeira from Lisbon on a guided tour! This is a great option if you like to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

There aren’t too many tours in specific that go only to Ericeira. However, there are tours that will take you to multiple coastal towns along the Silver Coast where Ericeira is one of them. This is a fun way to experience a lot of Portugal in a little amount of time.

There are also a few other tours that stop in Sintra and head towards the coast (Ericeira) later in the day. All amazing options where you’ll see some beautiful parts of Portugal.

If you’re looking for some adventure and an action-packed day that’s all sorted out for you then a tour is an awesome option. We’ve found Portuguese tour guides to be very proud of their country and very friendly guides!

Beach in Ericeira, Portugal

Foz do Lizandro Beach in Ericeira

A lthough there are other more popular destinations closer to Lisbon (such as Sintra and Cascais ), Ericeira can also be experienced on a day trip from the capital city. It’s usually combined with a visit to the Mafra National Palace nearby, and those with a car can also head up the coast to the beaches of Peniche (another hour further north) or stop by Óbidos , the best-preserved medieval village in Portugal.

Palácio de Mafra

A visit to Mafra Palace is usually part of a trip to Ericeira

Ericeira can be reached by public transportation (see the complete details about how to go from Lisbon to Ericeira by bus ) or by joining an organized tour. Visiting independently comes out cheaper and allows you to spend as much time at the beach as you’d like, but on a tour you have the advantage of not having to worry about transportation, and tour companies often combine Ericeira with other towns (usually Mafra, Óbidos, or Sintra).

If your interest in Ericeira is mainly the beaches , you’re better off going independently on the bus. There’s one departing from Lisbon as early as 6:27am, and the last one back to Lisbon from Ericeira departs at 9:45pm on weekdays, 8:20pm on Saturdays and 9:35pm on Sundays. You can check the schedules on the Mafrense website. It stops in Mafra, right across the palace, so you can visit this magnificent monument in the morning before a sunny afternoon at the beach.

Reasons Why You’ll Love Visiting Ericeira

To sum up WHY I love visiting Ericeira: the food and the relaxed vibe.

Everything to do in Ericeira revolves around eating and spending time at the sea. You can also surf if you are open to trying it!

Discover the 9 reasons why visiting Ericeira is a fantastic choice—and consider the 2 that might make you think twice!

#1. The scenery is epic

Those picture-perfect rugged coastline views of Portugal can all be found in Ericeira. Talk about a place to catch the sunset. In the scenery department, Ericeira does not disappoint.

This tiny village of whitewashed cottages is perched up on the hill along the Atlantic Ocean. It offers incredible sea views and, depending on your location, the villages along the coast.

View from a cliff overlooking a sandy beach in Ericeira, Portugal, with the ocean waves gently lapping against the shore. The sun is shining brightly in a clear blue sky, casting a warm light over the scene. The coastline stretches into the distance, bordered by green vegetation and rocky formations.

#2. You won’t find a better place to learn how to surf.

If you grew up watching Point Break, The Endless Summer, or even Blue Crush and dreamed of riding a surfboard, I recommend you come to Ericeira .

There are several surf schools that offer lessons, and you can even join a surf camp if you have the time.

A couple to consider are:

  • 2 Hour Surf Lesson for Beginners
  • 4-8 Hour Surf Lessons

Three surfers walk along a sandy beach in Ericeira, Portugal, carrying surfboards under their arms. The beach is dotted with rocks and patches of green seaweed, with waves gently rolling in the background under a bright, clear sky.

#3. It’s a seafood lovers paradise

If you don’t eat seafood, you might not love Ericeira as much as I did . But that doesn’t mean you can’t find any alternatives to fish.

There are a bunch of restaurants I can recommend for seafood lovers, especially:

  • Mar das Latas (get reservations)
  • La Popular Bistro (get reservations)
  • Mar à Vista (strictly seafood)

Other restaurants I loved that aren’t seafood-specific are:

  • Balagan  – Middle Eastern-inspired
  • Pizzeria Pepe Verde Ericeira – Pizza

📍 Click here to grab my Google Map of all my favorite restaurants in Ericeira!

Dishes You Want to Try In Ericeira

  • Bacalhau à Brás : A delicious dish made with shredded salted cod, onions, thinly cut fried potatoes, and scrambled eggs, all mixed together and garnished with olives and parsley.
  • Polvo à Lagareiro : Grilled octopus served with potatoes, olive oil, and garlic— a traditional Portuguese favorite.
  • Arroz de Marisco : A rich and flavorful seafood rice dish, packed with fresh clams, shrimp, and other local seafood.
  • Sardinhas Assadas : Grilled sardines, a staple of Portuguese cuisine, often served with a simple salad and boiled potatoes.
  • Pastéis de Nata : A classic Portuguese custard tart, perfect for a sweet treat after a seafood feast.

#4. You’ll find cute boutiques

I am a sucker for unique locally made goods! Here in Ericeira, you can find a bunch of cool boutiques with handmade jewelry, eco-friendly clothing, and interior decor.

For easy reference, I will describe my favorite shops in Ericeira in more detail, which you can read about here.

travel from lisbon to ericeira

#5. It’s less crowded than the Algarve

Have you ever been to the Algarve in the summer? When I say it’s crowded, you had better believe me!

For small towns like Faro , Tavira , and Lagos, it almost feels like there are too many people! Ericeira still draws a crowd, but it is a fraction of the crowds you’ll find down in the Algarve .

#6. Authentic Portugese Vibes

You can feel the local energy in Ericera, mixed with a cross of surfing nomads. But overall, the shops and bars are run by friendly Portuguese people.

The old town is preserved as it was when it was first established. There are no large chains or big box stores in the center, thank god 😉

A picturesque cobblestone street in Ericeira, Portugal, lined with whitewashed buildings accented with vibrant blue trim. A cascading burst of bright pink bougainvillea flowers adds a pop of color in the foreground, with a historic church visible in the background under a clear blue sky.

#7. It’s a break from the heat + hustle & bustle of Lisbon

I should mention that I live in Lisbon, and while I love it, it’s too hot in the summer and quite busy —too busy for my liking.

Ericeira is just 45 minutes away and offers more of an oasis from the hustle and bustle of the city.

So, if you want a bit more space to breathe on your trip to Lisbon , I suggest sneaking away to Ericeira.

#8. You can see it all on a day trip

If you only have a day to visit Ericeira, you can easily make it a round trip and still feel fulfilled by experiencing everything this charming town has to offer.

Start your day early—around 9 AM—especially if you plan to enjoy the beach, take a surf lesson, and dine at one of the fantastic restaurants I recommend.

Be sure to catch the sunset and, if it’s Friday, enjoy the live music in the city center!

#9. It’s good for Kids

While I don’t travel with kids, if you do, you might want to put Ericeira on your list!

The water is shallow, making it good for kids to swim. There are also beaches with lifeguards, which are an extra comfort for parents with small children.

2 Reasons to Pass up on Ericeira

#1. the weather could be less than ideal.

Time for the hard truth about Ericeira. You might have to write this place off if you are not flexible with your weather expectations.

It is truly one of the only places I have been where the weather seems to change in minutes.

Ericeira experiences a micro-climate. That means even if the weather is hot with clear blue skies in Lisbon, it could be raining and sweater weather in Ericeria.

So my advice is to travel to Ericeira with the flexibility that the weather could dispoint.

#2. You are looking for lots of historical sites

While Ericeira is an interesting place to explore, it is not filled with historical sites and museums that will take up a whole day.

It would be best to visit Eriecia with the intention of eating, strolling around, and, weather permitting, hitting the beach.

If you want a more action-packed day filled with sites, museums, and more, you should consider visiting either Cascais or Sintra.

Museums & Sites of Ericeira

  • Ericeira Municipal Museum (Museu Municipal de Ericeira) – Housed in the Casa de Cultura Jaime Lobo e Silva, this museum highlights Ericeira’s maritime history, fishing traditions, and local culture.
  • Fort of Milreu (Forte de Milreu) – A 17th-century coastal defense fort offering panoramic views and insight into Ericeira’s military history.
  • Santa Marta Chapel (Capela de Santa Marta) – An 18th-century chapel dedicated to Saint Martha, reflecting the religious heritage of Ericeira’s fishing community.

Best Way to Reach Ericeira from Lisbon or Porto

From lisbon.

There are a couple of ways to get to Ericeira, but none of them involve taking a train. Your options are limited to, public bus, rental car or taking an Uber (is cheaper than you think).

I go into great detail about the options you have to choose from when visiting Ericeria from Lisbon which you can read about here.

Getting to Ericeira from Porto is a bit more involved but still quite manageable. Here are the main options:

  • Duration : Approximately 3 hours.
  • Details : Renting a car is the most convenient way if you prefer flexibility and the ability to make stops along the way. The drive is mostly on the A1 and A8 highways, offering scenic views as you head south toward Ericeira. This option also allows you to explore the beautiful coastline at your own pace.
  • Duration : 4 to 5 hours, including transfers.
  • Details : There isn’t a direct bus from Porto to Ericeira , so you’ll need to take a bus from Porto to Lisbon (either Sete Rios or Oriente bus stations) and then transfer to a bus heading to Ericeira. Rede Expressos offers frequent services between Porto and Lisbon, and then from Lisbon, you can catch the Mafrense bus to Ericeira.
  • Duration : Approximately 5 to 6 hours.
  • Details : You can take a train from Porto’s Campanhã station to Lisbon’s Oriente or Santa Apolónia stations. From there, you’ll need to switch to the metro or take a taxi/Uber to one of Lisbon’s bus stations (Sete Rios or Campo Grande), where you can catch the Mafrense bus to Ericeira. This option is less convenient due to multiple transfers but might appeal to those who prefer traveling by train.

What you can expect to pay in Ericeira

Prices in Ericeira aren’t crazy expensive, but they aren’t considered cheap like some places I visited, like Catania, Italy.

I was a bit surprised by the food prices in Ericeira. Accommodations are still relatively affordable , especially in the winter months!

The sunbeds were nice and cheap! You can rent a sunbed in Ericeira for:

Travel Tips for Visiting Ericeira

  • Bring Cash or plan to withdraw cash, as most establishments don’t take credit cards.
  • If you rent a car , do your best to get a small rental car as driving the narrow and tight streets of the old town is a nightmare!
  • Check the weather forecast – and check it again . Don’t be surprised if the weather looks great one day and despairing the next!
  • Download all the Portugal-specific travel apps!

Still Unsure About Ericeira? Other Destinations to Consider

Time is precious when traveling, and you don’t want to choose the wrong destination. If Ericeira doesn’t sound like a place that will blow your mind, then have a look at these options:

  • Lisbon to Obidos, a medieval village located just 1 hour from Lisbon!
  • Lisbon to Cascais , a popular beach town located just 40 minutes by direct train from Lisbon
  • Lisbon to Sintra.
  • Lisbon to Faro day trip : while it is a 3-hour train ride each way, it is doable if you are willing to start early!

Lisbon to Ericeira by public transport – updated for 2024

Ericeira is a traditional fishing town that has become one of the finest surfing destinations in Europe. The town is also a popular day trip from Lisbon, with visitors coming to see the charming town centre and the spectacular coastline.

Insight: Often, a day trip to Ericeira is combined with a visit to Mafra to see the magnificent Palácio Nacional de Mafra.

Ericeira is 45km northwest of Lisbon, and regular bus services connect Lisbon to Ericeira. These buses depart from the Campo Grande bus Station in Lisbon, and the slow meandering bus route passes through Mafra. The fastest bus service to Ericeira takes 80 minutes, but slower services can take over 100 minutes.

Once at Ericeira, the bus services terminate at the newly constructed bus station, but this is inconveniently located 1.5km from the town centre.

This article will detail how to travel from Lisbon to Ericeira and help you get the most from this journey.

Lisbon to Ericeira an overview

The quickest and easiest method to travel from Lisbon to Ericeira is by car. The journey takes 45 minutes and follows the A8 and A21 expressway.

If you are reliant on public transport, the only option is travelling by bus. There is no railway to Ericeira, so bus travel is the only option.

Bus travel to Ericeira is also quite limited, as the only choice is the regional bus service operated by Carris Metropolitana. Ericeira is not served by the intercity bus network provided by Rede Expressos.

Insight: As annoying as it is, for any onward travel to Ericeira by public transport, it is best to head into Lisbon first.

The bus to Ericeira

The only public transport option from Lisbon to Ericeira is the regional bus service operated by Carris Metropolitana. There are a number of different services, with slight variations in the number of stops and routes, but they all depart from the Campo Grande bus station in Lisbon and terminate at the Terminal Rodoviário bus station in Ericeira. The most frequent services are the 2740 (78min), 2803 (71min), 2751 (104min non-express service) and 2801 (56min rush hour only).

Insight: All of the buses to Ericeira depart from the same bus bays in Campo Grande. Therefore, it is recommended to take the first service when you arrive (except for the 2751 route, which takes a very long time).

The latest timetables can be seen on the Carris Metropolitana website: • 2740 - www.carrismetr opolitana.pt /horarios/? linha=2740 • 2803 - www.carrismetr opolitana.pt /horarios/? linha=2803 • 2751 - www.carrismetr opolitana.pt /horarios/? linha=2751 • 2801 - www.carrismetr opolitana.pt /horarios/? linha=2801

Insight: The bus services to Ericeira are operated by Carris Metropolitana. This changed from the 'Mafrense' bus company in December 2022, but Mafrense may still be mentioned on out-of-date travel guides or websites.

Bus tickets are purchased from the bus driver onboard and, currently, the buses do not accept payment by bank card, so cash is needed. A single fare from Lisbon to Ericeira costs €4.50; the exception is the slower 2751 service which costs €2.60. There are no return tickets, and the return fare must be purchased on boarding the return bus (It is important to make sure you have cash at the end of the day).

Luggage or bulky items (such as surfboards) can be taken but are placed in the luggage compartments beneath the bus. Expect to load and retrieve your luggage from the compartments yourself.

The Lisbon to Ericeira bus service can get very busy during the peak season (especially at the weekends and for the 11:00 service). It is always advisable to arrive a little earlier and get a place in the queue. If you do have a long wait, there is a decent café below the NOS towers.

Campo Grande Bus Station

Campo Grande bus station ( GPS: 38.759416, -9.159039 ) is a series of bus bays outside of the Campo Grande train/metro station. The bus station is served by the yellow and green metro lines. At the bus station, there are no facilities and there is no ticket office or information point – it is best to regard it as a large bus stop.

The buses to Ericeira depart from bus bays 22 to 24. The buses departing from bays 23 and 24 passes through Mafra, while the buses from bay 22 do not.

Below is an interactive view of the Campo Grande bus station, as seen on Google Street View (Note: The image is from Nov2020 and shows Mafrense buses)

The bus journey is very fast from Lisbon to Malveira as it speeds along the A8 expressway, but certain services take a torturously long time to travel from Malveira to Mafra as it follows the meandering N116.

In Ericeira, the bus does not make a loop of the town but stops directly at the Terminal Rodoviário Bus Station. Ericeira bus station is modern but is inconveniently located on the far eastern side of the town ( GPS: 38.968253, -9.405161 ).

From the bus station, it is a 1.5km downhill walk to the town centre and beaches. This is a very tiring uphill walk when returning to the bus station from the historic centre of Ericeira, and it may be easier to catch and Uber or taxi.

Lisbon Airport to Ericeira

If you are travelling directly from Lisbon Airport to Ericeira, you will have to travel across Lisbon to Campo Grande Bus Station.

For ease, it is recommended to travel via Uber or taxi for the journey from the airport to Campo Grande Bus Station. However, it is also possible to travel via the metro.

The airport is on the red line and getting to Campo Grande Bus Station (on the green line) involves and switching lines at Alameda.

Sintra to Ericeira

The only other major town served by any direct bus service to or from Ericeira, is Sintra.

The bus route (operated by Carris Metropolitana) from Sintra to Ericeira is the number 1633 service. There are over 15 departures per day during the week (Mon-Fri), but much fewer on weekends. The journey takes 45 minutes and a single ticket costs €2.60. The latest timetable can be seen on the Carris Metropolitana website: www.carrismetr opolitana.pt /horarios/? linha=1633

In Sintra the bus departs and terminates at the Portela Train Station ( GPS: 38.802598, -9.376619 ). From Portela Train Station, it is a 1.7km (22 minute) walk to the historic centre of Sintra. It is important to note that Portela is not the train station at the end of the Lisbon-Sintra train line, but the penultimate one.

Ericeira, Portugal in 2024: an independent and expert travel guide

Ericeira is a delightful fishing town which is also the premier surfing destination in Portugal.

The region's magnificent coastline faces the might of the Atlantic Ocean, and the huge waves that roll onto Ericeira's beaches have led to the town's transformation into Portugal's go-to destination for surfing and surf culture.

Found among Ericeira's cobbled streets and traditional whitewashed houses are surf schools, trendy restaurants and hostels packed with surfers of all nationalities and ages. Ericeira has readily embraced surf culture, and is welcoming and relaxed, while also being a popular centre for yoga, creatives and artisans of all styles.

This evolution of Ericeira into a world-class surfing destination has been harmonious with the character and heritage of the town. The town still retains its charming town centre, where surf-inspired bars sit next to traditional Portuguese cafes, and locals and visitors can be found strolling the cliff-tops at sunset.

Ericeira Portugal

Ericeira fishing harbour and the Praia dos Pescadores beach

For a holiday, there is a lot to love about Ericeira. In addition to its renowned beaches, surfing and chilled ambience, the town also offers unspoilt countryside, a vibrant food scene, along with day trips to Sintra or Mafra.

Ericeira is also highly recommended for a day trip if you are on holiday to Lisbon or Sintra. An enjoyable day can be spent exploring the characterful historic centre of Ericeira, seeing the beautiful beaches and watching the skilled surfers in action. The town may not be as popular for a day trip as Sintra, Cascais or Setubal, but it is equally as good. This article will provide an introduction to Ericeira and help you get the most from your day trip to holiday to the town.

Highlights of Ericeira

Highlights for a day trip to Ericeira are: • Strolling along the Largo das Ribas with its stunning cliff-top views over the fishing harbour and Praia dos Pescadores beach. • Watching experienced surfers ride the huge Atlantic waves of the Ribeira d'Ilhas beach from the Ribeira d'Ilhas viewpoint. • Embracing surf culture in one of the many excellent restaurants or cafes on the Largo do Jogo da Bola. • Relaxing on the beautiful Praia do Sul beach.

The highlights for a holiday to Ericeira are: • Learning to surf on Europe's finest waves while being taught by some of Portugal's best surfers. • Spending a day on the glorious Praia da Foz do Lizandro beach. • Taking a day trip to Sintra, with its many splendid palaces and castles. • Hiking along rugged and dramatic coastlines, which are completely free from tourists.

Ericeira for a day trip

Ericeira is a fantastic destination for a day trip, especially in the summer when the likes of Sintra or Cascais are overcrowded with tourists. An enjoyable day can be spent exploring the town centre then walking the cliff-top trails to either the Ribeira d'Ilhas beach (to the north) or the Foz do Lizandro beach (to the south).

Ericeira doesn't have the same attention-grabbing sights as other popular day trip destinations, but its appeal comes from its quaint historic centre and the dramatic natural scenery surrounding the town. A day trip to Ericeira could be regarded as a calmer version of Cascais and comparable to Sesimbra .

For your day trip to Ericeira, there are direct bus services from Lisbon (80 – 110 mins) and Sintra (55 mins) - details are found later in this guide. Frequently, a trip to Ericeira is combined with a visit to the Palácio Nacional Mafra . or this day trip, it is suggest visiting Mafra in the morning, and then head to Ericeira for lunch and the afternoon.

Insight: The sunsets at Ericeira are amazing, and it is worth staying in the town (if you have the energy) until the early evening.

The interactive map below shows the sights of Ericeira (green markers), the beaches (yellow markers) and a suggested tour of the town. The tour begins at the bus station, which is inconveniently located on the far eastern side of Ericeira. The red line is the coastal walk to the Ribeira d'Ilhas viewpoint, which you may want to add to the day ( Note: zoom out to see all of the points)

Why have a holiday to Ericeira?

Ericeira is a fantastic, if slightly alternative, holiday destination. The town tends to attract surfers, as well as visitors who seek authenticity and culture over conventional mass tourism. Even with the increased popularity of Lisbon and its coastline, Ericeira has been overlooked - and its style of visitor has barely changed. That said, Ericeira will be packed during the summer with an equal mix of Portuguese holidaymakers, foreigners and long-stay residents. The surf culture of Ericeira does give the impression of attracting younger visitors, but in reality, the town attracts people of all ages.

Ericeira is a wonderful holiday destination if you are an outdoor person, who appreciates nature's raw beauty and wishes to embrace Portuguese culture. Ericeira benefits from being close to Lisbon and its airport (43km away) and is surrounded by many interesting towns and villages to discover (such as Praia das Maçãs, Mafra, Sintra, and Azenhas do Mar).

Generally, any visitor who has sought to find out how good Ericeira is will adore their time here.

How many days do you need for Ericeira?

Ericeira is one of those destinations where you can spend as long as you like – and many people have chosen to make it their full-time home!

The main sights of the town can be easily seen within 3 hours of sightseeing, which could be extended to a whole day if you include visiting the beaches.

If you are planning to include Ericeira as part of a touring holiday of Portugal, you would want to spend at least two nights here, giving a whole day to explore the town. If you wish to surf (which most visitors do), include a further two or three days.

For a longer 1-week holiday a suggested itinerary could be: • Day 1 – Explore Ericeira town • Day 2 – A beach day (either relaxing or surfing) at Praia da Foz do Lizandro • Day 3 – A day trip to Sintra • Day 4 – A coastal hike to the Praia de São Julião • Day 5 – A day trip to Mafra • Day 6 – A day trip to Azenhas do Mar and Praia das Maçãs* • Day 7 – A relaxing beach day on the Praia do Sul *A car is needed for this day

As with anywhere in Portugal, if you are planning a holiday to Ericeira, always book accommodation well in advance. The map below shows the location of hotels and rental rooms in Ericeira. By altering the date to your holiday, the map will display current prices:

Ericeira for families

Ericeira is also a great destination for a family holiday. The town has a calm and welcoming atmosphere and is ideal for children of all ages.

The Praia dos Pescadores beach is sheltered from the region's strong currents and powerful waves by the harbour wall, and its waters are clean for swimming. For older children, there are the skate ramps at the Boardriders Quiksilver, while many of the surf schools are suitable for children.

Just outside of Mafra is the Aldeia Típica José Franco, a rural museum and traditional village made out of clay by the artist José Franco.

Have you considered a small group tour to Ericeira? The standard of tours in Portugal is very high, with knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides, and tours that are designed for modern tourists. An organised tours provides the opportunity to fit so much sightseeing into a single day, while removing the hassle of public transport. We have worked with GetYourGuide for the previous five years, and some of their best tours which include Ericeira are: • Ericeira, Mafra rural beach and wine tour (€95) • Mafra and Ericeira private tour • Coastal villages and Mafra Palace (€70)

Surfing at Ericeira

The majority of visitors to Ericeira come here for surfing, which is some of the best in Portugal - if not the whole of Europe.

The entire 2.5km coastline of Ericeira has been designated as a World Surf Reserve (WSR). The region offers every type of wave conceivable, from beginner-friendly deep breaks over sand, through to challenging reef breaks over flat rock ridges.

The two most popular surfing beaches are the Praia de Ribeira d'Ilhas and the Praia da Foz do Lizandro, found at either end of Ericeira. The Praia de São Julião is another fantastic beach for experienced surfers, which lies to the south of the town.

For a surfing holiday, Ericeira boasts outstanding facilities, including numerous hostels, inexpensive eateries and cool bars.

Ericeira is also a popular location for learning to surf, with a variety of surf schools providing excellent tuition. Lessons for beginners start from €40 for a half-day tuition, or you can join week-long surf camps. Some of the best surf schools in Ericeira include: Ericeira Surf school: http://ericeirasurfschool.pt/ Surf Riders: https://www.surfriders.pt/ Extra Surf School: https://www.extrasurfschool.com/

If you wish to just hire a board for half a day, it will cost €15, but you will definitely need to hire a wetsuit (€15) for the year-round chilly water. Warning: There are strong rip tides along the coastline. When choosing a location to surf, always follow local advice.

Ericeira also has many excellent beaches if you wish to relax rather than surf. These include the Praia dos Pescadores or the Praia do Sul. If you are on a holiday where one person wants to surf and another doesn't, then the Praia da Foz do Lizandro is the best choice of beach – it has great waves, but is also sheltered from the winds and contains many great beach restaurants and cafes. Eating out in Ericeira

Ericeira has no shortage of excellent restaurants catering to all budgets and styles. Being a fishing town, the specialities of Ericeira tend to be freshly-cooked fish or seafood-based dishes.

For traditional Portuguese food, Tasquinha do Joy is always highly regarded, while O Gafanhoto is a favourite with the locals of Ericeira.

For somewhere a bit more special, try the excellent Mar das Latas or the Esplanada Furnas, which offers the best dining view in Ericeira. If you fancy non-Portuguese food, there is the excellent Uni Sushi or the ever-so-popular Tik Tapas.

Ericeira Nightlife

The nightlife of Ericeira is the perfect blend of relaxed and social – ideal after a day of surfing. It's much calmer than the nightlife in other destinations such as Lisbon or Cascais, as visitors come to Ericeira for the surfing or chilled ambience rather than to party all night long.

The town still offers plenty of night-time fun, with the trendy bars of Tubo, Lebre and Adega Bar 1987, or the craft beer taproom of 5 e Meio. For a decent sports bar with pool tables, there is Tiro Taco, or for a late night there is Ouriço, the oldest nightclub in Portugal that has entertained revellers for over 60 years. Insight: Sunsets in Ericeira are magical. Just before sunset, perch yourself on one of the cliff-top benches with a beer or wine, and watch as the sun descends over the ocean.

Travel from Lisbon

Lisbon is connected to Ericeira by a regular bus service that departs from the Campo Grande bus station in Lisbon. A single ticket costs €4.50 and the journey can take anything from 80 minutes through to 110 minutes, depending on the service. The latest timetables can be seen on the Carris Metropolitana websites: www. carris metropolitana .pt/ In Ericeira, the bus station is poorly located on the far eastern side of the town ( GPS: 38.968253, -9.405161 ) and is a 1.5km walk to the historic centre. This is a very demanding uphill walk when returning back to the bus station.

Ericeira has no railway station, and there are few intercity bus services. As annoying as it is, for any onward travel to or from Ericeira, it is best to head into Lisbon first. The one exception is the 1633 bus service that connects Sintra to Ericeira (45 minutes, €2.60), which makes visiting Sintra as a day trip possible. Related articles: Lisbon to Ericeira

Ericeira has four sandy beaches within the town itself, two great surfing beaches slightly further out, and a selection of additional, more challenging surfing beaches within the WSR (World Surf Reserve) coastline.

Pescadores beach is the central beach of Ericeira and is very scenic, overlooking the fishing harbour and surrounded by sheer cliffs. The beach is popular with families and sunbathers as it is sheltered from the strong regional winds that often buffer the coastline.

Lizandro beach is another fantastic location for surfing, but is a great alternative to Ribeira d'Ilhas. It lies at the mouth of the Lizandro river, 3km south of Ericeira, and is the largest sandy beach of the region.

Praia da Foz do Lizandro Ericeira

Lizandro is a huge beach, but a little way out of town

Just a short walk from the town centre is South Beach (Praia de Sul), Ericeira's most popular beach, which offers golden sands and clean bathing waters.

Praia do Sul beach Ericeira

Beautiful Praia de Sul, ideal for a relaxing day on the beach

São Sebastiao beach has a beautiful natural setting and moderate waves. It is again close to the town centre of Ericeira, making it popular with a range of visitors.

Praia de São Sebastião Ericeira

The pristine beach of São Sebastiao is less than a 5-minute walk from central Ericeira

Praia do Algodio is the smallest beach of Ericeira, and is ideal for a day relaxing on the beach.

Praia do Algodio

The Praia do Algodio

If you are spending extended periods in the sea, you will need a decent wetsuit, as the sea temperatures are always cold. The water temperature is regulated by the Atlantic Ocean, meaning there is little seasonal variation, rising to just 21C in the height of the summer, while only dropping to 18C in winter.
