To use Cruise Control, turn it on first by pressing the button on the end of the control stalk behind the lower right side of the steering wheel. The green cruise control icon will appear in the instrument display to show the system is ready.

Then accelerate to the speed you want, and press the stalk down to set it. The SET indicator will appear underneath the CRUISE CONTROL icon to let you know you can take your foot off the accelerator.

If you need to increase your speed, lift and hold the stalk up until you reach the speed you want, and then release it.

To reduce the set speed, push the stalk down and hold it to slow down to your target speed, and then release it.

To temporarily suspend cruise control, pull the stalk towards you, or tap the brakes.

To resume the set speed, push the lever up briefly.

When it came to my 2014, I had previously written instructions on how to turn off the dynamic radar speed control. Toyota has altered the method, making it a little bit simpler, as Vet Interested has pointed out. A procedure that took up almost an entire manual page in 2014 is now condensed to a single bullet point in the 2017 version. But the answer is just there, right in front of us. Instead of immediately pressing the stalk’s end button to activate cruise control, you can cancel the radar cruise and switch to conventional cruise by holding the button down for a few seconds. The panel between your speedometer and tachometer will show that alert.

Cruise Control ‘22

1 year and 10,024 miles of ownership. WHAT is up with the cruise control in these things?!? Bought the rig in Maine and drove near/at sea level. Plenty of power. Decent mpg with mixed driving. Cruise worked a treat even WITH the radar component active. All was smooth as butter. Moved out to SD/Black Hills and, well, long story short, I absolutely hate driving this rig out here. I know the altitude (~4-5k) doesn’t suit the NA engines well and that was expected. I lived out here for 4 years and had an FJ that was a gutless wonder on the highway, but never had the same issues with the cruise as this Runner does. She’s completely stock. Cruising around anywhere it seems the cruise control can’t decide if it wants 5th?3rd? Some weird hybrid of 4 1/2? RPMs all over the place. Speed gets over by 1 mph and it’s a two gear downshift. Speeds then drops by 2-3 mph under “set” and it’s another 2-3 gear downshift, all hands on deck, tach-ing out to gain the lost 2-3mph. Same results with and without radar enabled. (That radar blows goats btw) Anyone else having similar issues? Thinking of running into the dealer to see about a re-flash of ECU/TCM. Thinking maybe the altitude is not being comp’d with the ECU. My other “daily” is a 1ton GMC Dually. Granted, it’s a turbo-diesel and a 10spd, but driving that beast is a dream with the cruise, and WAY better mpg.

It was the same in my 2010 Tacoma. I manually downshift on hills or use the throttle to maintain speed myself. A supercharger helps but that’s not a realistic fix.

I don't think mine is that bad, though where I live is flatter since I'm on the coast. Honestly, whenever I get into really hilly terrain or when I'm up north in the mountains I don't use cruise. It just can't handle it, the engine just doesn't make enough power. Yeah, it's un- aerodynamic and it's heavy, but the number of gears in the transmission and lack of power certainly don't help. I'm sure you're familiar with this technique, but what I do is shut the cruise off, gain speed on the downhill, and then try to at least maintain the speed limit on the uphill, then repeat. I also shifted in and out of sequential as needed, because I figure if it's going to be hunting around anyway, I'd rather control it.

Oh yes. I do all the “tricks”. Smooth as silk. However, when the missus drives, she sets it and forgets it. Drives. Me. Nuts. Hahaha Guess I just used to the CC in my Dually. That thing is flawless. 10 spds and ridiculous amounts of torque and power. Just smoooooth. I DO love taking the Runner off road though. That’s her sweet spot

I had the same issues traveling for long distance the other day. The catch up mechanism of the ECU and the response on the gears is too slow. It doesn't know what to do if it slows down or goes to a lower gear . The lag is way too long for the system to shift properly. Issue is this, we preset the speed and so the computer knows not to go up from there and that is like a ceiling for the ECU so the gears just don't know what to do. You would think in this day and age of AI and tech, these systems would respond better and faster. I say tune it with one of the vendors here and probably get the aggressive tune because this one will give you the fastest response. This cruise control needs a brand new design, IMO.

I have found that the transmission and cruise control do not hunt, (down shift) as much since I removed the 285’s and installed 265’s.

Summary of functions In vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, the vehicle automatically accelerates and decelerates to match the speed changes of the preceding vehicle even if the accelerator pedal is not depressed. In constant speed control mode, the vehicle runs at a fixed speed. Use the dynamic radar cruise control on freeways and highways.

Before using dynamic radar cruise control

• Driving safely is the sole responsibility of the driver. Do not rely solely on the system, and drive safely by always paying careful attention to your surroundings.
• When the sensor may not be correctly detecting the vehicle ahead:
• Conditions under which the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode may not function correctly:
• Set the speed appropriately depending on the speed limit, traffic flow, road conditions, weather conditions, etc. The driver is responsible for checking the set speed.
• Even when the system is functioning normally, the condition of the preceding vehicle as detected by the system may differ from the condition observed by the driver. Therefore, the driver must always remain alert, assess the danger of each situation and drive safely. Relying on this sys-tem or assuming the system ensures safety while driving can lead to an accident, resulting in death or serious injury.
• Switch the dynamic radar cruise control off using the “ON-OFF” button when not in use.

Cautions regarding the driving assist systems Observe the following precautions, as there are limitations to the assistance provided by the system. Failure to do so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.

• Assisting the driver in measuring the following distance The dynamic radar cruise control is only intended to help the driver in determining the following distance between the driver’s vehicle and a designated vehicle travelling ahead. It is not a mechanism that allows care-less or inattentive driving, and it is not a system that can assist the driver in low-visibility conditions. It is still necessary for drivers to pay close attention to the vehicle’s surroundings.
• Assisting the driver to judge proper following distance The dynamic radar cruise control determines whether the distance between the driver’s vehicle and a designated vehicle travelling ahead is within a set range. It is not capable of making any other type of judgement. Therefore, it is necessary for the driver to remain vigilant and to determine whether or not there is a possibility of danger in any given situation.
• Assisting the driver to operate the vehicle Dynamic radar cruise control has limited capability to prevent or avoid a collision with a vehicle travelling ahead. Therefore, if there is ever any danger, the driver must take immediate and direct control of the vehicle and act appropriately to ensure the safety of all involved.

Situations unsuitable for dynamic radar cruise control Do not use dynamic radar cruise control in any of the following situations. Doing so may result in inappropriate speed control and could cause an acci-dent resulting in death or serious injury.

• Roads where there are pedestrians, cyclers, etc.
• In heavy traffic
• On roads with sharp bends
• On winding roads
• On slippery roads, such as those covered with rain, ice or snow
• On steep downhills, or where there are sudden changes between sharp up and down gradients. Vehicle speed may exceed the set speed when driving down a steep hill.
• At entrances to freeways and highways
• When weather conditions are bad enough they may prevent the sensors from detecting correctly (fog, snow, sandstorm, heavy rain, etc.)
• When there is rain, snow, etc. on the front surface of the radar sensor or camera sensor
• In traffic conditions that require frequent repeated acceleration and deceleration
• When your vehicle is towing a trailer or during emergency towing
• When an approach warning buzzer is heard often

Driving in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode

• Example of constant speed cruising When there are no vehicles ahead The vehicle travels at the speed set by the driver. The desired vehicle-to-vehicle distance can also be set by operating the vehicle-to-vehicle distance switch.
• Example of deceleration cruising and follow-up cruising When a preceding vehicle driving slower than the set speed appears When a vehicle is detected running ahead of you, the system automatically decelerates your vehicle. When a greater reduction in vehicle speed is necessary, the system applies the brakes (the stop lights will come on at this time). The system will respond to changes in the speed of the vehicle ahead to maintain the vehicle-to-vehicle distance set by the driver. Approach warning warns you when the system cannot decelerate sufficiently to prevent your vehicle from closing in on the vehicle ahead.
• Example of acceleration When there are no longer any preceding vehicles driving slower than the set speed. The system accelerates until the set speed is reached. The system then returns to constant speed cruising.

Setting the vehicle speed (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode)

Adjusting the set speed

To change the set speed, operate the lever until the desired set speed is displayed.

• Increases the speed
• Decreases the speed

• For the U.S. mainland and Hawaii Fine adjustment: By 1 mph (1.6 km/h)*1 or 1 km/h (0.6 mph)*2 each time the lever is operated Large adjustment: Increases or decreases in 1 mph (1.6 km/h) *1 or 1 km/h (0.6 mph)*2 increments for as long as the lever is held
• Except for the U.S. mainland and Hawaii Fine adjustment: By 1 mph (1.6 km/h)*1 or 1 km/h (0.6 mph)*2 each time the lever is operated Large adjustment: Increases or decreases in 5 mph (8 km/h)*1 or 5 km/h (3.1 mph)*2 increments for as long as the lever is held.

In the constant speed control mode, the set speed will be increased or decreased as follows: Fine adjustment: By 1 mph (1.6 km/h)*1 or 1 km/h (0.6 mph)*2 each time the lever is operated Large adjustment: The speed will continue to change while the lever is held.

• When the set speed is shown in “MPH”
• When the set speed is shown in “km/h”

Changing the vehicle-to-vehicle distance (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode)

The vehicle-to-vehicle distance is set automatically to the long mode when the engine switch is turned to IGNITION ON mode. If a vehicle is running ahead of you, the preceding vehicle mark will also be displayed.

Vehicle-to-vehicle distance settings (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode)

Select a distance from the table below. Note that the distances shown correspond to a vehicle speed of 50 mph (80 km/h). Vehicle-to-vehicle distance increases/decreases by vehicle speed.

Cancelling and resuming the speed control

• Pushing the lever up resumes the cruise control and returns the vehicle speed to the set speed. However, cruise control does not resume when the vehicle speed is approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) or less.

Approach warning (vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode)

Warnings may not occur when In the following instances, warnings may not occur even when the vehicle-to-vehicle distance is small.

• When the speed of the preceding vehicle matches or exceeds your vehicle’s speed
• When the preceding vehicle is travelling at an extremely slow speed
• Immediately after the cruise control speed was set
• When depressing the accelerator pedal

When constant speed control mode is selected, your vehicle will maintain a set speed without controlling the vehicle-to-vehicle distance. Select this mode only when vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode does not function correctly due to a dirty radar sensor, etc.

Automatic cancellation of vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode is automatically cancelled in the following situations:

• Actual vehicle speed falls at or below approximately 25 mph (40 km/h).
• VSC is activated.
• TRAC has been activated for some time.
• When the VSC or TRAC system is turned off.
• The sensor cannot detect correctly because it is covered in some way.
• Pre-collision braking is activated. If vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode is automatically cancelled for any other reason, there may be a malfunction in the system. Contact your Toyota dealer.

Automatic cancellation of constant speed control mode Constant speed control mode is automatically cancelled in the following situations:

• Actual vehicle speed is more than approximately 10 mph (16 km/h) below the set vehicle speed.
• Actual vehicle speed falls below approximately 25 mph (40 km/h).
• Pre-collision braking is activated. If constant speed control mode is automatically cancelled for any other reason, there may be a malfunction in the system. Contact your Toyota dealer.

Brake system operation sound If the brakes are applied automatically while the vehicle is in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, a brake system operation sound may be heard. This does not indicate a malfunction.

Warning messages and buzzers for dynamic radar cruise control Warning messages and buzzers are used to indicate a system malfunction or to inform the driver of the need for caution while driving. If a warning message is shown on the multi-information display, read the message and follow the instructions.

When the sensor may not be correctly detecting the vehicle ahead In the case of the following and depending on the conditions, operate the brake pedal when deceleration of the system is insufficient or operate the accelerator pedal when acceleration is required. As the sensor may not be able to correctly detect these types of vehicles, the approach warning may not be activated.

• Vehicles that cut in suddenly
• Vehicles travelling at low speeds
• Vehicles that are not moving in the same lane

• Motorcycles travelling in the same lane

• When your vehicle is pointing upwards (caused by a heavy load in the luggage compartment, etc.)
• The preceding vehicle has an extremely high ground clearance

Conditions under which the vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode may not function correctly In the case of the following conditions, operate the brake pedal (or accelerator pedal, depending on the situation) as necessary. As the sensor may not be able to correctly detect vehicles ahead, the system may not operate properly.

• When steering wheel operation or your position in the lane is unstable
• When the vehicle ahead of you decelerates suddenly
• When driving on a road surrounded by a structure, such as in a tunnel or on a bridge
• The vehicle speed decreases to the set speed after the vehicle accelerates by depressing the accelerator pedal

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
