DOT probing alleged use of stock footage in ‘Love the Philippines’ video

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Tourism’s (DOT) is probing the alleged use stock footage taken from other countries in its  “Love the Philippines” promotion video.

The clips from the said video, which supposedly aims to showcase the Philippines’ tourist attractions, were purportedly stock footage from Thailand, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates accessible in Storyblocks, a rapid video creation platform, according to various users online.

In response, the DOT said on Saturday that it started conducting an investigation “to determine the veracity of, and to gather the full faculty of facts on, these allegations.”

It added that DDB Philippines, the agency that prepared and published the audio-visual presentation, has repeatedly confirmed the originality and ownership of all materials in the video.

“During the various meetings and consultations held relative to the tourism brand enhancement, the DOT, for its part, repeatedly sought confirmation from DDB on the originality and ownership of all materials contained in the AVPs and key visuals presented to the Department,” the DOT said in a statement.

“In all these occasions, DDB repeatedly assured the DOT that the originality and ownership of all materials are in order,” it added.

The tourism department likewise clarified that the video under the newly-launched campaign, which costs P49 million as revealed by Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco in an interview over CNN Philippines’ “The Source,” did not use public funds.

“While no public funds have been paid for the AVP in question as this particular component of the launch was released on the account of DDB, the DOT holds the responsibility of promoting the country to the highest standard,” it said.

“Therefore, it will not hesitate to exact accountability and take the necessary action to protect the interest of the country even as it continues to exhaust all efforts to develop and promote the Philippine tourism industry,” it added.

Use of stock footage

DDB Philippines, on the other hand, issued an apology to DOT and the public, as it admitted using non-original or stock footage for the Love the Philippines campaign video.

It likewise highlighted that the video was produced “at its own expense, and no public funds were released or would be released, to fund the video,” adding that the “use of stock footage in mood videos is a standard practice in the industry.

“[T]he use of foreign stock footage was an unfortunate oversight on our agency’s part. Proper screening and approval processes should have been strictly followed. The use of foreign stock footage in a campaign promoting the Philippines is highly inappropriate and contradictory to the DOT’s objectives,” DDB said.

“This is an isolated incident and the AVP has already been taken down as of this time. The succeeding ad materials have yet to be produced for this campaign,” it added.

DDB further revealed that it is already cooperating with the DOT’s investigation.

“We sincerely hope this will not diminish the genuine love and appreciation the stakeholders and the public have been showing for the Love The Philippines campaign,” it said.

Not in PH? DOT probes ‘stock footage’ allegation in new tourism video

NEW SLOGAN. "Love the Philippines" is the country's new tourism slogan.

Department of Tourism

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Tourism (DOT) said it was now conducting a probe into allegations that some of the videos used in the new ‘Love Philippines’ tourism campaign were stock videos.

“As one of the many other forthcoming components of the launch of the enhanced tourism campaign, the DOT’s contracted agency, DDB Philippines, prepared and published an [audio-visual] presentation which has recently been the subject of scrutiny on the alleged use of non-original shots in certain parts of the AVP,” DOT Secretary Cristina Frasco said in a statement late Saturday, July 1.

“The DOT is currently conducting an exhaustive investigation to determine the veracity of, and to gather the full faculty of facts on, these allegations,” the tourism chief added.

On Saturday, some social media users pointed out that parts of the video clips used in the country’s new tourism video campaign, which launched the new slogan, “Love the Philippines,” were stock footages from a Storyblocks, a stock media subscription company.

In various Facebook posts, the users alleged that the clips showing the rice terraces, swimming dolphins, a fisherman casting a net, and sand dunes, came from the said stock media company. Some of the users added certain footages were allegedly not shot in the Philippines.

In her statement, Frasco said that during their meetings with the agency, DDB confirmed the originality of the materials used in the video.

“During the various meetings and consultations held relative to the tourism brand enhancement, the DOT, for its part, repeatedly sought confirmation from DDB on the originality and ownership of all materials contained in the AVPs and key visuals presented to the Department. In ALL these occasions, DDB repeatedly assured the DOT that the originality and ownership of all materials are in order,” the DOT secretary said.

Frasco added: “While no public funds have been paid for the AVP in question as this particular component of the launch was released on the account of DDB, the DOT holds the responsibility of promoting the country to the highest standard.”

The DOT chief also noted that the agency “will not hesitate to exact accountability.”

On June 29, the tourism chief said in an interview with CNN Philippines’ “The Source” that the “Love the Philippines” campaign is worth P49 million. Frasco said the cost included “the entire study [of] coming up with a logo,” including other components of the campaign.

Last week, the DOT launched the new tourism slogan in a bid to lure more tourists to visit the country. Frasco said the rebranding was a response to the changing demands of the tourism industry, as well as the shifting preferences of tourists amid the pandemic. – Rappler.com

Video Prank at Domino’s Taints Brand

tourism course viral video scandal

By Stephanie Clifford

  • April 15, 2009

When two Domino’s Pizza employees filmed a prank in the restaurant’s kitchen, they decided to post it online. In a few days, thanks to the power of social media, they ended up with felony charges, more than a million disgusted viewers, and a major company facing a public relations crisis.

In videos posted on YouTube and elsewhere this week, a Domino’s employee in Conover, N.C., prepared sandwiches for delivery while putting cheese up his nose, nasal mucus on the sandwiches, and violating other health-code standards while a fellow employee provided narration.

The two were charged with delivering prohibited foods.

By Wednesday afternoon, the video had been viewed more than a million times on YouTube. References to it were in five of the 12 results on the first page of Google search for “Dominos,” and discussions about Domino’s had spread throughout Twitter.

As Domino’s is realizing, social media has the reach and speed to turn tiny incidents into marketing crises. In November, Motrin posted an ad suggesting that carrying babies in slings was a painful new fad. Unhappy mothers posted Twitter complaints about it, and bloggers followed; within days, Motrin had removed the ad and apologized.

On Monday, Amazon.com apologized for a “ham-fisted” error after Twitter members complained that the sales rankings for gay and lesbian books seemed to have disappeared — and, since Amazon took more than a day to respond, the social-media world criticized it for being uncommunicative.

According to Domino’s, the employees told executives that they had never actually delivered the tainted food. Still, Domino’s fired the two employees on Tuesday, and they were in the custody of the Conover police department on Wednesday evening, facing felony charges.

But the crisis was not over for Domino’s.

“We got blindsided by two idiots with a video camera and an awful idea,” said a Domino’s spokesman, Tim McIntyre, who added that the company was preparing a civil lawsuit. “Even people who’ve been with us as loyal customers for 10, 15, 20 years, people are second-guessing their relationship with Domino’s, and that’s not fair.”

In just a few days, Domino’s reputation was damaged. The perception of its quality among consumers went from positive to negative since Monday, according to the research firm YouGov, which holds online surveys of about 1,000 consumers every day regarding hundreds of brands.

“It’s graphic enough in the video, and it’s created enough of a stir, that it gives people a little bit of pause,” said Ted Marzilli, global managing director for YouGov’s BrandIndex.

The Domino’s experience “is a nightmare,” said Paul Gallagher, managing director and a head of the United States crisis practice at the public relations firm Burson-Marsteller. “It’s the toughest situation for a company to face in terms of a digital crisis.”

Mr. McIntyre was alerted to the videos on Monday evening by a blogger who had seen them. In the most popular video, a woman who identifies herself as Kristy films a co-worker, Michael, preparing the unsanitary sandwiches.

“In about five minutes it’ll be sent out on delivery where somebody will be eating these, yes, eating them, and little did they know that cheese was in his nose and that there was some lethal gas that ended up on their salami,” Kristy said. “Now that’s how we roll at Domino’s.”

On Monday, commenters at the site Consumerist.com used clues in the video to find the franchise location in Conover, and told Mr. McIntyre about the videos. On Tuesday, the Domino’s franchise owner fired the employees, identified by Domino’s as Kristy Hammonds, 31 and Michael Setzer, 32. The franchisee brought in the local health department, which advised him to discard all open containers of food, which cost hundreds of dollars, Mr. McIntyre said.

Ms. Hammonds apologized to the company in an e-mail message Tuesday morning. “It was fake and I wish that everyone knew that!!!!” she wrote. “I AM SOO SORRY!”

By Wednesday evening, the video had been removed from YouTube because of a copyright claim from Ms. Hammonds. Neither Ms. Hammonds nor Mr. Setzer were available for comment on Wednesday evening, said Conover’s chief of police, Gary W. Lafone.

As the company learned about the video on Tuesday, Mr. McIntyre said, executives decided not to respond aggressively, hoping the controversy would quiet down. “What we missed was the perpetual mushroom effect of viral sensations,” he said.

In social media, “if you think it’s not going to spread, that’s when it gets bigger,” said Scott Hoffman, the chief marketing officer of the social-media marketing firm Lotame. “We realized that when many of the comments and questions in Twitter were, ‘What is Domino’s doing about it’ ” Mr. McIntyre said. “Well, we were doing and saying things, but they weren’t being covered in Twitter.”

By Wednesday afternoon, Domino’s had created a Twitter account, @dpzinfo, to address the comments, and it had presented its chief executive in a video on YouTube by evening.

“It elevated to a point where just responding isn’t good enough,” Mr. McIntyre said.

Private Resort Customers In Viral Video Apologize

The group of customers who ruined a private resort in laguna say sorry..

PRIVATE RESORT – The rowdy customers involved in the viral video from a Laguna resort apologized for their behavior.

Previously, a video of customers being rowdy and trashing a private resort in Laguna went viral. The local government of Calamba City, Laguna has already ordered to investigate what has transpired.

As seen in the viral video, a group of men were throwing chairs, bottles, and even a charcoal grill and a water dispenser into the pool. In a previous article, the private resort owner aired his dismay and disappointment for what they have done.

The resort owner is keen on pressing charges and he was not the only one angered on what has happened but also the people online who are mostly in favor of filing charges against these people and them being sacked by their employer.

Accordingly, the men involved in the said incident were suspended and dismissed. The resort management also agreed to the settlement amount the company and these men offered for the damages.

One of the men in the CCTV footage was interviewed by One PH. The outing was for their co-worker’s birthday celebration and their misbehavior was fueled by too much drinking.

“Parang napasobra na lang din po kami sa inom ng alak. Hindi na po namin napigilan yung sarili naming [kaya] ganyan na po ang nangyari,” one of the men said. He also denied that they are under the influence of an illegal substance based on the interview .

The suspects have already apologized and some of them even brought their parents with them when they faced the resort management to say their sorry. A settlement amount of Php 30,000.00 put a rest on the issue.

The rowdy and disrespectful guests are employees of a famous electronics and cellphone manufacturer company.

In a previous article, the private resort owner shared that she is using the income for her chemotherapy which touched many hearts. Famous personality Rendon Labador lambasted the disrespectful guests  who left the place in total chaos and devastation.

A well-followed Twitter account representing tourism in Pakistan has attracted criticism for sharing a viral video that followers say is sexist and inappropriate.

The video, which was posted by the tourism-focused account on Christmas Day, shows a couple arguing on a cable car in the country.

In the clip, a woman riding a cable car tells her partner she is afraid of heights. When her male partner becomes annoyed with her, he threatens to open the safety bar on the cable car to throw her off.

The woman in the video seems visibly frightened, and asks her partner to forgive her before touching his feet as a sign of respect.

“Way for tourist to get revenge on wife,” wrote the Lahore-based tourism Twitter channel.

However, followers were quick to point out the problematic content of the video, with many branding it sexist.

“This is Pakistan’s idea of promoting tourism. This guy is literally threatening his wife with her life. Exactly why anyone would not want to travel on this ropeway. Can’t get any more dumb than this,” wrote @Sharmay.

“Pakistani Tourism, are you seriously using it to promote your business? This is terrible. It’s not funny at all,” wrote one follower.

Travel writer Salman Rashid replied saying, “Are you out of your mind? What are you trying to portray? This is in extremely poor taste. Please take it off social media.”

“WTF is this? Who is this imbecile? This idiot should be arrested!” commented Ali Wajee Ur Rehman.

“The sexist and misogynistic levels of Pakistan tourism,” wrote @Therainpoet, sharing the video.

The clip has now had 756,000 views on the Twitter channel, with many of the hundreds of comments calling for the video to be taken down.

It’s not the first time a tourism organisation has been accused of tone deaf social media. In 2018, a Hong Kong tourism advert fell flat after it showed a boyfriend stealing his girlfriend’s passport , with some saying the “romantic” move was actually abusive.

Meanwhile, in January Ukraine’s tourism board attracted criticism for telling prospective visitors to “Keep calm and visit Ukraine”, despite the looming threat of a Russian invasion.

The Independent has approached the Pakistan Tourism account for comment.

Jake Cuenca on ‘Viral Scandal’

  • October 28, 2021
  • 3 minute read

Jake Cuenca is one of the stars of upcoming ABS-CBN show Viral Scandal . Of course, the actor went, uhm, also viral a couple of weeks ago because of an incident with the police involving a buy-bust operation. According to reports, the policemen were in an undercover operation and dressed as civilians when he was stopped.  The actor, in his vehicle, side-swiped one of the police cars.

According to Jake, he wasn’t aware that he hit another vehicle but was surprised when unmarked cars started a chase. He also heard gunshots. Jake, in

a statement on TV Patrol , said, “My instinct talaga was to not stop, to just go forward, to get away from trouble.”

Jake shared that he was surprised to find out that the police were chasing after him, and not the “armed civilians” he believed shot at his vehicle. But as soon as Cuenca understood the situation, he explained that he immediately cooperated. “ Hindi ako nanlaban, hindi ko sila pinahirapan .”

There was also a Grab driver who got accidentally shot in the chase and Jake promised to help him.

Anyway, back to Jake’s upcoming show Viral Scandal .  This is a prime-time teleserye and also stars Charlie Dizon, Dimples Romana and Joshua Garcia.

In the show, Charlie, who won Best Actress for Fan Girl in last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival, takes on the challenging role of Rica, a teenager caught in a viral video scandal. How Rica and her mom Kakay, played by Dimples Romana, will deal with the scandal is the subject of the timely series.

In the story, Kakay is an OFW while her husband Dan works as a furniture maker. By working abroad, she hopes to provide a better future for her family. She thinks her sacrifices have been paying off now that her eldest Rica is on the verge of finishing her apprenticeship in an architectural firm and is about to take the board.

Their real-life nightmare begins when Rica gets involved in a video scandal that goes viral. As soon as Kakay learns about the scandal, she comes home to face the judgment and censure of the people around them. Aside from her family, she also finds support from her trusted friend and protector, Kyle, played by Joshua.  How will Rica be able to prove her innocence in the said video? How will Kakay protect and defend her daughter from the accusations? What is the role of Troy Ramones (Jake), the mayor of Sidero, in the lives of Rica and Kakay?

Viral Scandal also stars Jameson Blake, Markus Patterson, Ria Atayde, Maxene Magalona, Aljon Mendoza, Karina Bautista, Louise Abuel, Kaila Estrada, Vance Larena, Gian Magdangal, Arielle Roces and Aya Fernandez. Watch it on Kapamilya Channel, TV5, A2Z, Kapamilya Online Live, iWantTFC, and TFC IPTV.

If you’re on a nostalgia trip and want to watch classic ABS-CBN shows, you can go to the ABS-CBN Entertainment YouTube Channel where shows, like May Bukas Pa, Dyosa, Palibhasa Lalake and many more are now available and with English subtitle for those who need such. Besides classic shows, the ABS-CBN YouTube Channel also houses Dear MOR where selected individuals share their life and love issues; there’s Mga Gapnod sa Kinabuhi which is a sure hit among Visayan audiences; while So De Yun Na Nga focuses on giving love and relationship advice.

Meantime, every weekend, expect a bunch of music-related shows, drama anthologies, talk shows, YouTube exclusive features, and a classic Filipino film featured every week that would be perfect for your weekend chill.

Apart from his television roles, Louise Abuel has also made a mark in the film industry, featuring in movies such as “The Reunion” (2012) and “Edward” (2019). With a net worth estimated at $850,000, the actor has become a prominent figure in the Philippine entertainment landscape.

The controversy comes at a time when Louise Abuel has been actively engaging with his audience through online platforms. Recently, he shared insights about his experiences during the Kapamilya Chat series, discussing his bond with co-stars and the behind-the-scenes of the series. However, the viral video has overshadowed these positive interactions, becoming the focal point of discussions across various online channels, including YouTube.

As discussions around the scandal continue to unfold, questions about the responsibilities of social media platforms in handling explicit content and ensuring the privacy of individuals in the public eye have come to the forefront. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges celebrities face in navigating the digital age, where personal boundaries can easily be crossed, leading to unintended consequences.

Louise Abuel Leaked Video

It remains to be seen how Louise Abuel and the industry at large will respond to this controversy and what impact it will have on the actor’s career and public image. In the age of instant information and social media influence, incidents like these highlight the need for a thoughtful and responsible approach to the intersection of personal and public life for individuals in the limelight.

From fake murder to allegations of abuse, these events shocked the internet.

From beauty vlogger drama to actual criminal cases, YouTube is definitely causing all the drama lately. Get ready to go "oh my god," à la Shane Dawson.

ImJayStation faked his girlfriend's death to get more subscribers.

YouTube Scandals Controversies ImJayStation

Jason Ethier, aka ImJayStation , admitted in January 2020 he faked fellow YouTuber Alexia Marano 's death to up his subscriber count on the platform.

"I thought of the idea: What if we fake your death and then do a skit on YouTube pranking everybody saying it was just to gain traction on the Dream Team channel ?" Jason said in the video . "First, we were going to say she died, then we were going to do a Ouija Board video, which I did. Then we were going to call her at 3 a.m. and we were going to resurrect her and get more followers on our Dream Team channel."

Jason pointed out how Alexia was "down to make these videos with [him]." Of course, after Jason posted a now-deleted video saying she died (and later posted a now-deleted video of him going to her memorial), Alexia's parents called her and didn't like the videos, wanting them deleted.

Not long after, Jason said he fell asleep one day and woke up to find Alexia had left him, taking all her stuff, and ghosting him, subsequently ending their relationship.

After this happened, police arrived at Jason's place and said there's a warrant for his arrest from his girlfriend for assault with a weapon and assault. Jason denied the allegations and said he can't leave his house or he'll get arrested.

"I got a warrant out for something I didn't do. My girlfriend left me. The videos are gone. Our Dream Team channel is over with, and I don't know what to do."

ReSet sentenced to jail for an Oreo toothpaste prank.

YouTube Scandals ReSet Oreo Toothpaste

YouTuber Kanghua Ren, aka ReSet , was sentenced to 15 months in prison and given a $22,300 fine after he filmed himself handing a homeless man an Oreo filled with toothpaste instead of creme.

A Barcelona court found him guilty of violating "the moral integrity of his prank victim" back in 2017, according to HuffPost . Though he probably won't actually serve any time in prison, since Spanish law "usually allows suspension of sentences of less than two years for first-time nonviolent offenders."

ReSet had monetized the Oreo video, which has now been removed from YouTube, and it earned him more than 2,000 euros (which equates to over $2,249). In the video, ReSet said this about the homeless man: "This will help clean his teeth ― I don’t think he has cleaned them since he became poor."

While this sentence may seem harsh for a non-violent offense, judge Rosa Aragonés explained how "this was not an isolated act," and that ReSet enacted "cruel behaviors" toward "vulnerable victims."

The court also ruled ReSet's YouTube and other social media accounts be shut down for five years.

YouTubers accused of promoting a scam.

shane dawson youtube

This past year, YouTubers like Shane Dawson, Philip DeFranco, and h3h3Productions have promoted BetterHelp, an online counseling service that claims to provide professional and affordable therapy. Among other famous YouTubers, Shane and Philip have shared that BetterHelp is like having a counselor or therapist, but in the comfort of your own home via phone or online. But what seemed like an easy-to-use, supportive app might actually be a huge scam.

In early October, YouTubers KEEMSTAR and PewDiePie both criticized BetterHelp's questionable services. Though BetterHelp advertises that it charges $65/week for their counseling, its terms of service reveals that it will bill users on a monthly basis. Plus, according to PewDiePie , the fine print on BetterHelp's website previously disclosed that it "[does] not guarantee the verification of, the skills, degrees, qualifications, licensure, certification, credentials, competence or background of any Counselor." This statement has since been deleted from the website . Shady! Amidst the backlash, BetterHelp CEO Alon Matas has asserted that the allegations against the company were "ridiculous" and"fueled by YouTube drama that took a life of its own." Phillip and boogie2988 have temporarily terminated their partnerships, but no word yet on Shane's relationship with the company.

Beauty vloggers slammed for racist comments.

jeffree star youtube beauty

Tensions among the YouTube beauty community were at an all-time high this year — and it revolved around none other than Jeffree Star.

Though Jeffree has been involved in A LOT of feuds in the past, his beef with Laura Lee, Gabriel Zamora, and Manny MUA might have been his most dramatic (and complicated) yet. After Shane Dawson's docu-series about Jeffree dropped in August, Gabriel shaded Jeffree , bringing up his racist comments from 10 years ago. In response, Jeffree's fans found offensive tweets from Gabriel, Manny, Nikita, and Laura. As a result, Gabriel, Manny, and Laura all posted their own remorseful apology vids.

Then, at the end of September, Jeffree wore cornrows for a Jeffree Star Cosmetics campaign. People were not amused. Jackie took to Twitter to criticize his campaign and racist comments in the past. Just a few weeks later, YouTuber Thomas Halbert posted a video about racism in the beauty community, referring to but not directly mentioning Jeffree by name. When Jeffree responded with text receipts that would clear his name, Thomas fired back by accusing Jeffree of blackmailing his friends, including himself. According to Thomas, Jeffree had made a compilation video with problematic moments captured while filming with YouTubers. Jeffree then hinted that he was spilling tea soon , though that video has yet to come.

Jaclyn Hill filed for divorce after 9 years with her husband.

youtube jaclyn hill divorce

In one of the most devastating YouTube breakups of 2018, Jaclyn and Jon Hill divorced after nine years together. After much speculation, the two posted their respective breakup statements on Instagram in May, and Jaclyn later shared a video where she got real AF about her divorce.

The statements fueled fans to dig up old tweets and videos where they low-key shaded each other. But in July, Jaclyn insisted on Twitter that she did NOT cheat on Jon. She wrote, "And for the record... no, I did not cheat on Jon at the end of the day, nobody on social media knows the full truth... Please stop trying to dig up shit to carry this on when him & I are both moving on."

Logan Paul filmed a dead body.

Logan Paul Dead Body

Arguably the biggest YouTube scandal ever — as far as public outrage goes — was Logan's video from the end of 2017/beginning of 2018 that showed a person who had committed suicide in Japan's Aokigahara, a.k.a. the "suicide forest."

While the deceased's face was blurred out, it was still 100% clear this person committed suicide. (Reminder: a vast majority of Logan's fans are kids.) Logan and his crew attempted to make gallows humor when they stumbled upon the body, but it quickly fell flat and angered the entire world.

Everyone from Debby Ryan to Aaron Paul to Jeffree Star condemned Logan's actions. Logan apologized, but that in and of itself created more controversy after it was alleged he monetized his apology video .

YouTuber sorta-kinda cut ties with Logan, eventually suspending all ads on his videos. However, not long after, YouTube let Logan monetize his work again .

During this monetize/de-monetization phase, Logan managed to piss people off yet again by tasering a dead rat . His other vlogs during his visit to Japan also sparked backlash, revealing how he treated the Japanese people, completely disrespecting their culture and customs.

Jake Paul accused FaZe Banks of assaulting his assistant.

Jake Paul FaZe Banks

In August 2017, Logan's bro, Jake, made a video accusing FaZe Banks — who just happened to be dating Jake's ex friend/bae, Alissa Violet — of assaulting Jake's assistant, Meg Zelly. Jake also accused FaZe of cheating on Alissa.

Jake alleged FaZe clotheslined Meg and left a nasty bruise on her neck. Even though Jake gave all the "facts" about this alleged assault, he was not present when it supposedly went down.

FaZe made his own video , providing his own side of the story. He claimed Jake and Team 10 were lying and trying to make him look bad — not to mention trying to destroy his relationship with Alissa. (He did note that he could've clotheslined Meg, as he was drunk that night, but he didn't remember doing so. If he did, it would've been unintentional.) FaZe revealed he was suing Jake and Team 10 for defamation of character and slander.

Interestingly, Jake lost 60,000 followers after the ~incident.~

Later, a member of Team 10 who was there the night of the alleged assault, Max Beaumont, quit the team and shared his side of the story .

Max flat out said he neither saw FaZe hurt Meg nor see FaZe kiss girls who weren't his girlfriend. Meg and Max had been friends for over seven years, but Max couldn't sit by and let FaZe be accused of something he didn't do. According to Max, Meg told Max that FaZe clotheslined her, but that it was an accident. She then showed Max the bruise. (Nasty bruises don't form instantaneously , FYI.)

Sam Pepper faked a kidnapping and murder.

Sam Pepper Killing Best Friend Prank

Way back in November 2015, Sam Pepper teamed up with Vine star Colby Brock and basically traumatized Colby's friend, Sam Golbach.

In the video , a masked Pepper kidnapped Golbach (tossing him into the trunk of a car), tied him to a chair on a rooftop, and made him watch Colby being "shot." Golbach was screaming and crying and begging his captor to spare them. Golbach later learned it was all just a "joke."

To make matters worse, Pepper had already been in hot water a year prior to the kidnapping video. He posted the " Fake Hand Ass Pinch Prank ," showing him asking women for directions before pinching their bottoms. He was later accused of sexual harassment.

Pepper claimed the video was a "social experiment" and was staged.

Shane Dawson was accused of being a pedophile.

Shane Dawson YouTube

In January 2018, the YouTube channel Pop Blast — which has since been terminated after it was found to violate several of YouTube's policies — released a video titled "I think Shane Dawson is a pedophile. Here's my proof."

The video was an old, edited clip from Shane's podcast. In the vid, Shane discussed looking up "naked baby" online and called what he found "sexy." People began calling Shane a pedophile.

Shane made a video in response to fans' outrage, playing that part of the clip in full — which includes him quickly saying he was "kidding" after calling what he found during his naked baby search "sexy." Then, he explained his actions:

"I wanted to play that clip in full — that moment especially in full— just for context because that seems to be missing nowadays. I cannot believe I'm having this make this video," he said. "I'm going to start by saying I am not a f--king pedophile. I, Shane Yaw, my real name, go on record saying I am not a f--king pedophile. Got it? Great. There's my statement," he continued. "It's disgusting that people are saying I'm a f--king pedophile because of some s---ty ass f--king jokes from six years ago on a podcast."

Later, he said, "I'm sorry for making offensive jokes. I'm sorry that these are making people uncomfortable but it's also very out of context. When you listen to the full thing, it's still s---ty and creepy and bad jokes but it's not me being a pedophile. This is not proof of me being a pedophile."

PewDiePie made anti-Semitic jokes.

PewDiePie

In January 2017, PewDiePie, a.k.a. Felix Kjellberg, shared videos that included anti-Semitic jokes or Nazi imagery. Included in one video was a banner that read " Death to all Jews ."

After the videos went viral, earning PewDiePie serious backlash, the Walt Disney Company severed ties with the YouTuber.

In a now-deleted video, PewDiePie kinda-sorta apologized: "I just want to reiterate that my intention was to show how stupid the website is and how far you could push it."

But then he decided to blame the media, particularly the Wall Street Journal , for their deep dive report on him.

"It was an attack toward me, to try and discredit me, to try and decrease my influence and my economic worth," he said. "These three gentleman from [ Wall Street Journal ] that did this are also very proud of this."

He then flipped off the camera, saying, "Try again, mother-f--kers."

But wait, PewDiePie still wasn't done. "Personally, I think they are the ones normalizing hatred because there is actual hatred out there," he said. "Instead of celebrating my show getting canceled, why don’t we focus on that instead."

Apparently, he didn't learn his lesson, because in September 2017, he said the n-word during a video game livestream. He released an apology video on YouTube shortly after.

"It was something I said in the heat of the moment," he confessed. "I said the worst word I could possibly think of, and it just sort of slipped out. I’m not going to make any excuses as to why it did, because there are no excuses for it." The YouTuber later called himself "an idiot."

DaddyOFive and MommyOFive lost custody of two children after allegations of abuse arose.

DaddyOFive YouTube

Michael and Heather Martin, a.k.a. DaddyOFive and MommyOFive, respectively, constantly shared videos on DaddyOFive's YouTube channel that many argued depicted abuse of their five children.

The videos were "pranks," but they appeared to cause the kids serious emotional, mental, and physical distress . Example: The kids were encouraged to beat each other up.

Two of the five kids are the biological children of Michael and Rose Hall, while the other three kids are Heather's biological children.

In May 2017, Michael lost custody of his and Rose's children, Emma and Cody. Rose was granted emergency custody of her kids.

Michael and Heather released an apology video , maintaining they loved their children.

In September 2017, Michael and Heather pleaded guilty to child neglect charges and were sentenced to probation, according to People .

Monalisa Perez accidentally killed boyfriend Pedro Ruiz III in a stunt gone wrong.

Monalisa Perez

In June 2017, Monalisa and Pedro wanted more viewers, so they hoped to up the ante by having Monalisa shoot Pedro while he was holding a thick book.

Unsurprisingly, the stunt went horribly wrong and ended up killing Pedro . The stunt had been his idea. He thought the book would stop the bullet; it did not. His reasoning was that another book that had been shot had stopped the bullet.

The couple already had one child and Monalisa was pregnant with their second when Pedro died.

Right before the incident, Monalisa tweeted some unintentionally chilling words: "Me and Pedro are probably going to shoot one of the most dangerous videos ever HIS idea not MINE."

In December 2017, Monalisa pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter. Per The New York Times : "Local media reports said that a plea agreement called for Ms. Perez to serve 180 days in jail and spend 10 years on supervised probation, though The Pioneer Press said a judge would have the final say on her sentence."

Ragestew livestreamed himself trespassing on RiceGum's property and alleged he was beaten.

Ragestew RiceGum

Back in August 2017, YouTuber Ragestew filmed a livestream of himself literally breaking the law (and low key bragging about it) by trespassing onto private property, with the goal of breaking into YouTuber RiceGum's house.

It should be noted Ragestew already broke into Jake Paul's Team 10 house .

While trespassing, he was opening gates and actually jumping into the property. Soon, YouTuber FaZe Kay and other people approached Ragestew and asked what the heck he was doing. Some kind of scuffle broke out (though you couldn't see anything on camera) and Ragestew was ultimately apprehended.

Of course, he managed to escape until a freakin' police helicopter was used to find him and arrest him.

This should've been an open and shut case, right? Wrong. Ragestew shared pics of his bruises and alleged FaZe Kay and company beat him up and stole stuff from him. FaZe Kay then made a video explaining what really went down, and how he didn't lay a finger on Ragestew.

Nicole Arbour openly encouraged fat shaming.

Dear Fat People YouTube

In September 2015, Nicole made a notorious video titled " Dear Fat People ." In the six minute clip she savagely and mercilessly condemned people who were overweight and obese. She even went so far as to share an airplane story about literally pushing a person's fat into their seat on an airplane because it was in her space.

"Fat shaming. Who came up with that? That's f--king brilliant. Yes. Shame people who have bad habits until they f--king stop," is just one of the many heinous things Nicole said.

Nicole received serious backlash for the video, even reportedly losing a chance to choreograph the dance movie Don’t Talk to Irene . She told TIME her video was satire and how she felt it was "really important that we make fun of everybody," adding, "I think [what] brings us together and unites us as people is that we can poke fun at all of us."

Nicole was accused of being abusive towards ex-boyfriend and fellow YouTuber Matthew Santoro, also in September 2015.

In January 2016, Matthew “accidentally” uploaded a video to his public channel that was meant to be private, discussing the abusive relationship with an unnamed significant other. Nicole posted (and later deleted) her own response video to the allegations, calling them "not true,” according to Clevver News.

People willingly ate toxic Tide Pods for a "challenge."

Tide Pod Challenge

Disclaimer: DO NOT EAT TIDE PODS.

Just because a bunch of teens and huge YouTube stars like GloZell Green filmed videos of themselves eating the detergent doesn't mean YOU need to do so as well. It's super dangerous and potentially lethal.

The Tide Pod Challenge took the internet by storm in early 2018, with stores going so far as to literally lock up the detergent packets like some places do with spray paint. This is why we can't have nice things.

According to CNN , poison control centers received the same number of calls during the first 15 days of 2018 as they did in ALL of 2016. Yikes.

REVIEW: Women empowerment, happy endings reign in Viral Scandal finale

Mary ann bardinas may 14, 2022 08:55 am.

#TheEndOfScandal Review: Viral Scandal Finale

In the past six months, we have witnessed how the once peaceful and simple life of the Sicat family turned upside down after firstborn Rica, compellingly played by Charlie Dizon, figured in a controversial sex scandal and how they and the people who believed in them courageously fought despite the odds.

And in the finale week of Viral Scandal , we’re able to see how all their efforts and sacrifices paid off as the justice they’ve been yearning for was finally served, and how women empowerment and happy endings reigned in the end at the same time.

Thrilling and satisfying finale week

After being able to escape from his crimes, Jigs (Markus Paterson) finally got jailed, while Ella’s (Aya Fernandez) rape case versus him was already approved by the fiscal after waiting for a long time.

As the developments in Rica’s rape and anti-voyeurism case continue, his boss-slash-boyfriend Kyle (Joshua Garcia) also relentlessly searches for answers behind the real cause of death of his father Philip (Bart Guingona). And after looking for contractor Joseph Laurena, the sole witness to the crime, his former partner approached Kyle and handed him the letter Joseph left that contained the answers to Kyle’s questions. According to him, Philip didn’t commit suicide as it was Mayor Troy Ramones (Jake Cuenca) who killed him during their supposed meeting that day.

Upon knowing this, Rica accosted his biological dad, who confirmed that he’s actually in the Constantine building, but strongly denied that he had something to do with Philip’s tragic death. He may not have killed Philip himself, yet he blamed him for being the reason why Philip’s life and reputation got destroyed as he hid the anomalies done by his father, Alberto Ramones (Jong Cuenco). Troy confronted his dad afterwards about this, but the latter insisted that it was suicide and implied that he better be thankful as it also lessened the things they had to worry about.

Little did we know that shocking revelations that were exposed that day served as bad omens of the more appalling things that would happen that fateful evening.

Kyle suddenly lost his consciousness on his way out of the club where he was chilling with his friends Axel (Jameson Blake) and Chino (Aldrin Angeles). Apparently, his drink was spiked, just like what happened to Rica before. He then found himself at the rooftop of the Constantine Building and saw that Troy was there as well – and was unknowingly holding a gun. It was revealed that someone hit a hard object on his head while he was alone at his office.

Meanwhile, what was supposed to be a cheery evening at the Sicat residences was filled with terror after Romeo, who used to be Kakay’s (Dimples Romana) customer during her escort service days, went to their house and held Bea (Karina Bautista), Nico (Louise Abuel), and Pogs (Aljon Mendoza) as hostages while Kakay and Dan (Miko Raval) were outside. Shocked by their unexpected visitor, Dan attempted to save his family from him, but got shot in the abdomen, which gave Romeo an opportunity to take Kakay away.

Fortunately, Realyn and their other neighbors were able to stop Romeo, which forced him to take Kakay back to their house. As Nico failed to topple the goon down from the back, Kakay tried with all her might to snatch the gun from Romeo, which almost shot Bea if not for the agility of Dan, who was able to knock Romeo off his feet by kicking him while he was then lying bloody on the floor.

On the other hand, Bobby (Gian Magdangal) suddenly appeared and told Troy and Kyle that he was actually anticipating some action between the two, but that didn’t happen. He finally confessed that it was him who really killed Philip as his way of winning the favor of his dad Alberto Ramones. It ensued to a heated argument between Bobby and Troy and their struggle for the possession of the latter’s gun along with Kyle, after Bobby almost shot Rica, who arrived on the scene with a wood in her hand. As he once again failed to accomplish his mission, Bobby pushed himself to death by letting himself fall off the building.

Fast forward to one year after the bloody Sidero tragedy, we’re able to witness how the lives of the remaining characters have changed and become better.

The Sicats were able to survive that horrible night as Dan is alive! Pogs efforts to win Bea’s heart paid off as she finally confessed that she loves him too and agreed to be his girlfriend.

Troy resigned as mayor of Sidero, while his nephew Jigs was still in jail. Alberto is still persistent to win his grandson’s case by compelling him to continue with the stories they’ve made up.

On the day of the hearing, Rica’s family, friends, boyfriend Kyle, colleagues in Balai Arkitektura, and other victims of Jigs were in full force in showing their support for her. But what surprised us all was the appearance of Audrey (Maxene Magalona), who finally expressed her opposition to her former father-in-law and apologized to Rica for all her wrongdoings.

As expected, Jigs continued to lie, which made everyone in the courtroom emotional as they listened to his statements. However, his conscience has finally taken over him and he finally confessed the he indeed raped Rica – much to the surprise of Rica’s camp. This infuriated the Ramones patriarch, which triggered his heart attack.

Audrey and Kakay made amends, with the former even making an effort to bring to the Sicat residence the self-help books she bought for Rica in Paris, where she’s about to pursue a degree in fashion design. In return, Kakay expressed how happy and proud she is for her, and even handed her gift baskets.

After stepping down from the mayoral seat, it was revealed that Troy took the responsibility of taking good care of Alberto, who was suffering from a stroke. He even decided to manage their family’s chain of hotels and put up and work for charity, while being a father to his daughters Raven and Rica.

There’s seemingly something going between him and Atty. Laura Dizon (Ria Atayde), based on their actions in the finale episode. The same goes to Raven and Axel, who have apparently developed feelings towards one another, too. Kakay and Dan have gone sweeter and more in love with each other after everything happened, as well as Kyle and Rica.

Astounding performances of the Viral Scandal ensemble

Charlie has indeed proven that she’s not an award-winning actress for nothing. She’s able to make us feel the emotions of Rica through her compelling portrayal and attested that she’s really the next Kapamilya leading lady to watch out for.

Her fellow headliners Joshua Garcia, Dimples Romana, Jake Cuenca, and Miko Raval were also able to astound us with their respective performances, especially when it comes to showcasing their dramatic prowess. New breed of artists Karina Bautista, Aljon Mendoza, Louise Abuel, Jameson Blake, Kaila Estarada, and Markus Paterson, had their own shining moments, too, which truly impressed us.

Seasoned actors Ria Atayde, Maxene Magalona, and Gian Magdangal astounded us with their dramatic prowess, while veteran character actors Ana Abad Santos, Jong Cuenco, and Bart Guingona were also effective in the respective roles given to them. Aya Fernandez, Arielle Roces, Vance Larena, and Sky Quizon didn’t only get us smitten with their visuals, but with their promising acting talents, as well.

Of course, the impressive performances of the rest of the Balai Arkitektura team – comprised of Hasna Cabral, Apey Obera, Jessica Marco, and Aldrin Angeles – should not be overlooked, too.

With how they’re able to create and pull off a totally relatable, timely, and refreshing teleserye amid a pandemic, the directors (Dado Lumibao and Froy Allan Leonardo), writers (Chie Floresca and Alpha Fortun), and creative and technical teams of RCD Narratives all did an amazing and commendable job!

Valuable takeaways

The Viral Scandal has indeed imparted a lot of valuable lessons throughout its six month-run, which we should take by heart.

Rica and her family have inspired us to never lose hope and to courageously stand by our ground as we fight for what we know and believe in is right and for the welfare of the people who matter to us and of others as well. It has also encouraged viewers to always seek for the truth and not be easily fazed by fake news and scrupulously fight disinformation, especially now that we’re in the age of social media, where everything can be immediately shared in just a few clicks.

Besides, it’s also high time for us to speak up on various issues and empower each other. And these do not only apply to women, but to men and other genders as well.

These are also some of the things that our Kapamilya netizens, who were able to watch the finale, have said on their posts on Twitter. Thus, “Viral Scandal” and “#TheEndOfScandal” made it to the Top 2 and Top 11, respectively, of the top trending topics of the micro-blogging site. Here are some of the rave tweets that were able to spot:

Great teleserye. Best casts, story plot and unlike the usual theme we have in PH, hindi focus sa romance ang show na to. Gusto ko yung solid bases sa laws. Thank you, Mission Accomplished #TheEndOfScandal #ViralScandal https://t.co/JjbjSmb2ZA — Coco_maca (@Xaymaca14) May 13, 2022
