It’s almost Back to School Time! Here are Some Great Edmonton Field Trips!

By nerissa mcnaughton | september 3, 2016.

Art Gallery of Alberta Free Admission Evenings are the perfect chance to visit the gorgeous AGA! Explore the galleries on Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings

Art Gallery of Alberta

If you are looking for an exciting Edmonton field trip opportunity for your class, you’ll have no shortage of options in the Capital region. Here are just a few of the places where your students will learn something new while creating lasting memories with their peers:

The Art Gallery of Alberta:

You teach students to feed their minds, but you know the mind-body-emotional connection is important too. Engage your students’ deeper senses with the wonderful displays and programs at the Alberta Art Gallery (AGA). From indigenous art to traditional paintings, from exotic sculptures to creative installations, awaken your class’s inner artist with AGA’s educational programming .

John Janzen Nature Centre:

Providing interactive, hands-on ways for students to learn all about nature, the John Janzen Centre can accommodate groups from preschool, elementary or junior/senior high. The programs are designed to tie into established school curriculum goals, and they run rain or shine. Visit their website for complete details.

Devonian Botanic Gardens:

There is a reason why Devonian Botanic Gardens has been running field trip programs for over 25 years. Here, students can roam more than 240 acres of wetlands, butterfly gardens, Japanese gardens, and more. Don’t be alarmed if you are presented with a freshly caught frog! Take time to smell the roses as you and the kids get in touch with the beauty of the natural world. Programs are available for elementary through senior high school students.

TELUS World of Science:

Edmonton Field Trips - Telus World of Science

Telus World of Science

For an out-of-this-world experience, take your class to TELUS World of Science (TWoS), where special programs are designed for each grade to complement the Alberta Education curriculum. TWoS also has educational programming for home-schooled children . Sometimes special presentations, such as The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes, can reserve time blocks for student groups.

Father Lacombe Chapel:

Go back in time when you visit the quaint delight that is Father Lacombe Chapel . Located in St. Albert, just a hop, skip and a jump outside of Edmonton, school programs are arranged by grade, and each student gets to experience life as a pioneer. Set against a tranquil backdrop of green space and helmed by outstanding interpretive guides, this is a school trip that whets the appetite for learning more about history.

Education is one of the most important building blocks of a child’s life, but learning in a classroom is just one piece of the puzzle. Field trips keep students engaged in their learning experiences, and they are fun for both students and teachers alike.

"Best Wetland program around! The kids always enjoy the day and take something away that they didn’t know prior to the visit! Well done!!"

- Jenna Otway, teacher, Niton Central School

Available Programs

Wetland Ecosystems The best way to learn about wetlands is to visit one! Let us guide your class through the wetlands unit and experience these unique ecosystems firsthand. The program includes station activities and everyone will have a chance to pond dip for aquatic invertebrates.

Themes:  Wetland types, aquatic invertebrates, wetland plants, stewardship, plant and animal identification, and adaptations.

Freshwater Systems Use local wetlands to connect to a larger discussion about provincial fresh water, watersheds, and the role we all play in ensuring healthy water for the environment, society and economy. Your class will also have the opportunity to sample water to contribute to an Alberta-wide citizen science initiative.

Themes: Alberta’s water resources, water quality, human impacts on aquatic ecosystems, aquatic monitoring for invasive species, and citizen science.

Aquatic Study Take your aquatic study to the next level by adding data to a province-wide water quality monitoring program. This field program will serve as an introduction to a larger aquatic study where students will formulate their own questions and use qPCR technology to evaluate ecosystem health.

Themes:  Watersheds, water monitoring, aquatic biodiversity, aquatic invasive species, connections between science and technology to the healthy people and healthy watersheds, DNA, citizen science, water use, and biological contamination.
