Stage 12 results

100km to go

120km to go, 140km to go, 145km to go, 150km to go.

Bonjour and welcome to the Cyclingnews live coverage of stage 12 of the 2023 Tour de France.

After the quiet stage and then thrilling sprint finish and Jasper Philipsen’s fourth win in Moulins, we’re expecting a lot more attacks and perhaps even a GC battle today.

The riders are currently signing on inside the Le Scarabée event venue.

Ineos Grenadiers are on stage, with Egan Bernal getting a huge cheer. He could try to go in the attacks today.

Stage 12 takes the Tour through countryside dappled with vineyards that produce red and rosé wines.

Roanne is to the west of the production of grapes that become Beaujolais, which hosted its only other occasion as a Tour stage start in 2008.

That stage in the final week was won in a breakaway by Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel, and a breakaway could make its mark from Roanne again.

The rolling terrain across the 168.8 kilometres will cross climbs of the Col de la Croix Montmain and the Col de la Croix Rosier for a first-time finish for the Tour in Belleville-en-Beaujolais.

Like stage 11, Paris-Nice has found a regular stop in this village on the banks of the Rhône River, last in 2014.

We expect attacks and breakaways to form on the  brutal stage 10 , with the hilly start meaning only those with great legs will make the move of the day.

Expect  Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech)  to want retribution after falling just short on stage 10 and Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep) will surely want to try again.

Neilson Powless  and Magnus Cort could also both perform well on a stage like this for EF. T

he former will also want to chase the 19 King of Mountains points available to extend his stint in the polka-dot jersey before the Alps.

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma)  sits 17 seconds ahead of Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

Vingegaard admitted he is worried about early attacks from Pogacar and Vingegaard.

Logic suggests both will wait for the Grand Colombier (17.4km at 7.1%) summit finish on Friday but who knows in modern day 'Full-gas' racing.

After Jumbo-Visma, the last team to sign on is Alpecin-Deceuninck of stage winner Jasper Philipsen.

Missing from the sign on is Fabio Jakobsen who decided not to start today due to his  crash injuries.

Click below to read more about his abandon.

Fabio Jakobsen abandons Tour de France due to stage 4 crash injuries

Fabio Jakobsen crashed hard during the stage 4 sprint

The riders have gathered outside the modern Le Scarabée event hall.

Roanne is a stage start for the second time after 2008.

At the finish of that day in Montluçon, Sylvain Chavanel claimed his maiden Tour win, while Roanne was the setting for Wout van Aert's time trial win in the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné, the day of Chris Froome’s horrific crash during training.

That day arguably marked the generational change in the sport, with the rise  of Tadej Pogacar, Van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel, Jonas Vingegaard and then Remco Evenepoel.

The riders are lone-up at the start. The flag is about to drop.

The riders face a 10.4km neutralised ride to the official stage start.

On y va! It's time to race.

The four jersey wearers are tucked tight  behind the race director car.

Nobody want to lose position up front today.

This was the atmosphere at the indoor sign-on.

🇫🇷 #TDF2023Bonjour Roanne 👋 pic.twitter.com/H0RzDJ9o46 July 13, 2023

Radio Tour has confirmed that Fabio Jakobsen is the only non-starter today.

These are likely the only quiet moments of the stage.

🤔 Breakaway? Sprint? Who will win today in Belleville-en-Beaujolais? Today's stage is a very difficult one to predict!🤔 Echappée ? Sprint ?

3km to take off!

Jonas Vingegaard and Jasper Philipsen lined-up at the start

1km to the drop of the flag but there is already a fight for position.

Tom Pidcock is one of the GC riders up front.

There's a slight headwind at the start. While a puncture for Gogl of Alpecin will delay the start for a moment.

Gogl gets a wheel change and he is given a tow by a race motorbike.

Christian Prudhomme waves the flag and so the stage is underway!

Allez!

Boom! Mads Pedersen attacks and goes clear alone!

But here come other riders.

We have more riders on the move.

Fred Wright, Mathieu van der Poel and Alberto Bettiol have joined Pedersen.

Other groups are forming behind them, as riders try to get away before the early climbs start.

Julian Alaphilippe and wout Van Aert are also part of a big group up front.

The speed is high.

The riders are trying to get in the right attack, without going too deep. It's a game of cat and mouse as riders chase each other like crazy.

Now Mohoric takes off at speed but Van Aert closes him down.

Bernal and Skjelmose join them but here come the peloton.

The riders crest a minor climb but will soon start the Cat 3 Côte de Thizy-les-Bourgs.

More attacks will surely come very soon.

It's hard up front but at the back too.

Caleb Ewan has been distanced and will have to fight to get back on.

The Australian sprinter has yet to secure a win this year but has been close. However he faces four days of suffering as the Tour heads to the Alps.

MOULINS FRANCE JULY 12 LR Caleb Ewan of Australia and Pascal Eenkhoorn of The Netherlands and Team Lotto Dstny compete during the stage eleven of the 110th Tour de France 2023 a 1798km from ClermontFerrand to Moulins UCIWT on July 12 2023 in Moulins France Photo by David RamosGetty Images

Up front Mohoric lines out the peloton again as Peter Sagan suffers too.

Victor Lafay sparks another surge and he is joined by Van Aert and Marc Soler, as the GC teams also position key riders.

Skjelmose pushes on as more sprinters are dropped.

The riders near the summit of the Côte de Thizy-les-Bourgs but the road keeps rolling.

Dani Martinez of Ineos was first to the summit and pushes on with others.

The attacks and chases keep coming and coming.

Everyone wants to be in the move and is scared to miss the right attack.

Gruppo compatto but the speed is really high. It could stay like this for a while as the riders race over a rolling plateau.

Wow! The road rises and Van Aert does a massive turn on the front to try to split the peloton.

He has caused damage and split the peloton.

Crash!

A number of riders go down, including Quentin Pacher of Groupama.

David de la Cruz of Astana also went down hard.

Van Aert is stilling surging at the front and has created a break.

There are some big names in the move.

There are eight riders in the front group.

Alaphilippe is also there, plus two riders from Lotto.

Mathieu van der Poel is there too as the peloton eases up.

Suddenly the attack is up to 20+ but more riders are  coming across.

Sadly David de la Cruz has abandoned the Tour after his crash. He was taken away by ambulance.

There is a chase group at just 30 seconds, with the peloton, including Philipsen, at 1:40.

Pogacar and Vingegaard are in the chase group ands closing the gap but Simon Yates, Powless and Gaudu are further back.

They are 45 seconds down and need to react, while more attacks are going off the front.

The riders are near the top of the Cat 3 Col des Écorbans climb.

Near the front Pogacar and Vingegaard are marking each other but also playing games, making soft attacks.

Ciccone edges away from another Van Aert to take the points at the top of the KOM.

Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) is still at 55 seconds. He was fifth overall and so other riders and teams will ride to keep him distanced.

Surprisingly Adam Yates - Pogacar's teammate and key support, is also in the chase group with his twin brother.

However this are fluid and ever changing.

Simon Yates seems to be back in the front group but that was a worry for a moment.

Boom! Van Aert goes again!

He clearly knows this is his last chance of a stage win before the Alps and he is going for it.

Yet what does that mean for Vingegaard and protecting the yellow jersey?

tour 12 etape 2023

Van Aert is solo! That's how strong he is.

Meanwhile, Landa, O'Connor, Kuss and others are at 1:30.

Neilson Powless is also in the chase group at 1:35. He is struggling to score KOM points today.

Van Aert is swept up but he has only inspired  more attacks.

The riders have  raced over 50km. the early part in the hills, at an average speed of 46.7km/h.

As Movistar describe it, Otro arranque a fuego - another firey start.

The next move comes from Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) and Wilco Kelderman (Jumbo-Visma)

There is a definite GC strategy at play here too.

The attacks are chased down as the front group is reduced more and more. There are fewer Classics riders and more GC riders and their key domestiques.

After 65km raced, the riders will enjoy a descent into the valley. Then after 30km in the Beaujolais, the three nasty climbs feature.

Mads Pedersen is on a great day and has joined Skjelmose and Kelderman.

Lidl-Trek have 2 riders up front.

The attacks came thick and fast

The yellow jersey group is only 25 seconds down on the front attack, as other chase in between.

The racing has been so fast and so aggressive that there are six riders off the front and then 12 riders in the yellow jersey group.

The chase group including Bernal, Kuss and Powless is at 3:45, with the green jersey at 9:00 and Ewan struggling even further back.

And  there are still 90km in the hills to race!

The attack is now bigger than the yellow jersey group.

Even Thibaut Pinot has jumped across to the attack.

Wout Van Aert leads the attack

The yellow jersey group is the same size as the attack, with 12 riders in each, so the break is finally going away.

Julian Alaphilippe and Jasper Stuyven are in no-man's land, trying to go across to the attack. Loulou doesn't want to miss this train and a chance to win the stage.

Ouch... Alaphilippe and Stuyven are at 30 seconds and so may have missed it.

The yellow jersey group has swollen to 39 riders as some stragglers get back on but everyone else is at 6:00.

The break of 12 are joined by Alaphilippe and Stuyven, with the Vingegaard group at 2:00.

The race has, after 95km of attacking, finally settled. But the climbs will soon start again.

The rider are in the Beaujolais hills and vineyards. Yet the three categorised climbs are still to come.

So much could still happen today, in  the fight for the stage win and also in the GC battle.

Jumbo-Visma are now leading the Vingegaard group. Van Aert, Laporte and Kelderman are taking turns at tempo, letting the gap extendtslowly.

The Powless, Landa group is at 6:30 and we'll see if they can close it.

The first of the three climbs start in 5km.

There are three climbs in the final 60km of the stage:

The Col de la Casse Froide: 5.3km  at 6.1%

The Col de la Croix Montmain: 5.5km at 6.1%

Col de la Croix Rosie: 5.3km at 7.6%.

The last climb also offers Bonus Sprint seconds, all with 28.5km to go and a fast ride to the finish.

Thibaut Pinot is in the front group and so targeting a stage win today. All of France and many watching around the world will be cheering for him.

The riders are now on the Col de la Casse Froide. It climbs up through the fields and forests.

BELLEVILLEENBEAUJOLAIS FRANCE JULY 13 LR Mike Teunissen of The Netherlands and Team IntermarchCircusWanty Maxim Van Gils of Belgium and Team Lotto Dstny Juan Pedro Lopez of Spain and Team LidlTrek and Gregor Mhlberger of Austria and Movistar Team compete climbing to the Cte de ThizylesBourgs 633m during the stage twelve of the 110th Tour de France 2023 a 1688km stage from Roanne to Belleville en Beaujolais UCIWT on July 13 2023 in Belleville en Beaujolais France Photo by David RamosGetty Images

AG2R are leading the chase of the attack but are 3:00 down but the question is why.

There only 18 riders in the group, with Fred Wright the latest to drop back.

The break reaches the top of the Col de la Casse Froide.

Their lead is down to 2:40 as some riders suffer in the group.

Chute!

A number of riders in the chase group go down, including Ciccone.

He is okay but needs a new bike. Woods was also caught in the crash but was not hurt.

Ciccone has cuts and road rash on his arm and knee but rides on.

Van der Poel is off the front with Amador, perhaps trying to get ahead before the second climb of the finale.

They lead by 15 seconds and will need that on the Col de la Croix Montmain: 5.5km at 6.1%.

The Col de la Croix Montmain is a real climb. It'll be interesting to see if it sparks other attacks.

Vingegaard had to stay active and control Pogacar during the attacks but he's sat safely in the peloton now.

Up front Jorgenson has jumped across as Pedersen is dropped and so too is Alaphilippe. He made a big effort to go across to the move and is paying for it now.

There is a real shake-out in the attack on the Col de la Croix Montmain.

The shake-out is also out front, with van der Poel cruelly jumping away from Amador.

Was he not working with the Dutchman. Whatever, the climbers are on the move on  the climb.

MvdP said he was ill with some kind of cold and took it steady during stages 10 and 11.

Today he's on the attack again.

This was MvdP's attack.

Van der Poel takes a bidon of water from his father Adri on the side of ghe road.

Van der Poel crests the Col de la Croix Montmain, some 15 seconds ahead of the other attackers.

There is still so much that can happen in the final 40km.

Behind AG2R are still chasing and leading the Vingegaard group, the gap is down to 2:50.

Van der Poel dives down the descent and tries to extends his lead on the chasers.

The chase starts, with Pinot going with Jorgenson on the descent.

The quiet in the Vingegaard group has allowed some riders to get back on, including Mikel Landa.

Meanwhile the steeper Col de la Croix Rosie has started.

Pinot and Jorgenson are close to catching MvdP.

The chasers are at 35 seconds.

The riders come back together yet again, halfway up the climb.

The race for the stage win is very tactical and could go lots of ways.

Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) goes solo and Van der Poel is dropped.

Meanwhile... Behind, Ineos take control of the peloton. What are they cooking?

Izagirre crests the Col de la Croix Rosie with a lead of just 8 seconds.

Jorgenson and Pinot lead the chase.

Wout van Aert has been dropped from the Vingegaard group. Let's hope his leader does not need him in the final 25km.

Ion Izagirre is diving  down the descent to try to win the stage.

Ineos are perhaps riding to protect the GC placings of Pidock and Rodriguez and so chase Pinot They are perhaps just riding on the front to stay safe on the technical descent.

Crash for Torstein Træen. That's his third  and he is already racing with a micro fracture in his elbow.

Ion Izagirre has pushed his lead out to 40 seconds.

That could be enough for the flat race to the finish.

Ion Izagirre is going all in to stay away. He could give Cofidis their second stage win of this year's Tour after Lafay's win in San Sebastian on stage 2.

Behind the chasers aren't strong enough and organised enough.

Ineos have five riders on the front, including Bernal as they try to limit the time that Pinot gains in the GC.

If Pinot gains 4:00, he could move past Pidcock in the GC and take 8th place. Of course he will surely pay for his big effort in the Alps.

Here is Ion Izagirre as he goes full gas.

Cofidis also has Guillaume Martin in the break and he's doing what he can to slow the chase.

It's July 14 and Bastille Day tomorrow and so Cofidis will have plenty to celebrate.

Ion Izagirre won a stage in the Tour de France to Morzine in 2016.

He also won a stage of the Giro d'Italia in 2012 and La Vuelta in 2020.

Jorgenson makes an acceleration but the other  jump on his wheel.

Izagirre leads by a minute and so he's not going to be caught.

Jorgenson gets away with Mathieu Burgaudeau but it's too late.

Ion Izagirre is on his way to victory in Belleville-en-Beaujolais.

The last kilometre in Belleville-en-Beaujolais is a ride of celebration for the Basque rider.

Izagirre punches the air and celebrates his stage win in Belleville-en-Beaujolais.

Cofidis had to wait 15 years for a stage wi, now they have 2 in two weeks.

After 3:52 of full gas racing, Mathieu Burgaudeau takes second and Jorgenson is third.

Tiesj Benoot is fourth a few seconds back, with Thibaut Pinot only sixth.

The GC group finishes 4:20 down on Izagirre but were all together. Vingegaard stays in the leader's yellow jersey.

Here's the moment Ion Izagirre won alone.

Tour de France 2023 Route stage 12: Roanne - Belleville-en-Beaujolais

Tour de France 2023

Roanne is a small town on the river Loire. The Tour de France visited the town once before, also for a stage start. In 2008 the race went to Montluçon, where Sylvain Chavanel won from the breakaway.

This time the riders head for the Beaujolais countryside to finish in Belleville, on the banks of that other main river in France, the Rhône. To get from a to b the riders traverse rugged terrain.

The first KOM is the Côte de Thizy-les-Bourg, a 4.3 kilometres at 5.6% with its summit at kilometre 20.5. Via the Col des Ecorbans (2.1 kilometres at 6.9%) and a series of unclassified hurdles the race enters the the second half on the Col de la Casse Froide (5.2 kilometres at 6.1%). The riders then fly down to the foot of the Col de la Croix Montmain (5.5 kilometres at 6.1%) before continuing to the Col de la Croix Rosier, which is a slightly harder climb: 5.3 kilometres at 7.6%. Moreover, there are time bonuses of 8, 5 and 2 seconds available at the top.

Still almost 30 kilometres to go after the Croix Rosier summit sprint. Most of it goes downhill, although there are some small obstacles and several flat sections to handle as well.

Belleville-en-Beaujolais never before hosted a Tour de France stage finish.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the first three on the Col de la Croix Rosier get 8, 5 and 2 seconds.

SOLO BREAK And Tight Finish For 2nd Stage 12

Cyclists landed in Belleville-Beaujolais, France for stage 12 of the Tour de France on July 13.

The physical demand of the Tour de France is starting to take its toll on the riders. Fabio Jakobsen announced in the morning he is dropping out of the race due to injuries from a stage 4 crash.

Stage 12 was packed full of attacks as the route featured back-to-back climbs. Mathieu Van de Poel in particular wasn’t shy to attack for the lead. He kept up with the leading pack as much as he could until he fell behind in the last 30 kilometers (18.64 miles).

2023 Tour de France

Ion Izaguirre was the clear winner coming down from the final climb, the Col de la Croix Rosier.

He rode as the solo leader, establishing almost a full-minute lead ahead of the chasers.

The crowd cheered him to the finish line as he celebrated before riding across. This is his second career Tour de France stage win since 2016.

Mathieu Burgaudeau finished in second and Matteo Jorgenson in third.

Jonas Vinegaard is still in his yellow jersey going into stage 13. Tadej Pogačar follows behind him in the general rankings and Jai Hindley is in third.

Han ville have vundet.

// Rasmus, TV 2 Sport

Hvad får Jumbo Visma ud af at have haft Benoot i udbrud i dag?

Læs mere om etapen her .

Caleb Ewan fremgår ikke af dagens resultat? Er han fortsat ude på etapen

Hej William

// Rasmus, TV 2 Sport

Grand Colombier venter i morgen.

Bedre end for to dage siden.

Tiesj Benoot forklarer aggressiv taktik

Se højdepunkter fra dagens etape her:

Vingegaard følger med pogacar i mål.

Tadej Pogacar spurter med om en sekundær placering. Han har Vingegaard lige i hjulet.

Det er sjovt at se. De to slipper simpelthen ikke hinanden.

Men Vingegaard kommer altså over målstregen og beholder førertrøjen.

  • Ion Izagirre
  • Mathieu Burgaudeau
  • Matteo Jorgenson
  • Tiesj Benoot
  • Tobias Halland Johannessen

Favoritterne har nu kurs mod mål.

Izagirre vinder 12. etape

Ion Izagirre tager sin anden etapesejr i Tour de France nogensinde. En baskisk sejr til Cofidis-holdet.

Han hæver begge arme. Flot, flot sejr!

Én kilometer tilbage for spanieren.

I forfølgergruppen angriber Benoot her ad flere gange.

Roanne > Belleville-en-Beaujolais 169km

tour 12 etape 2023

Time for another bonkers breakaway stage. Tuesday’s stage was crazy, will this day follow a similar path?

Weather

Another sunny day with temperatures between 20-25 degrees.

Start

The opening 40km of the stage includes three climbs: 3.9km at 3.4%, 4.2km at 5.6% (Cat 3) and 4km at 5.3% (Cat 3). I’m not sure it’s hard enough for the utter chaos that ensued on Tuesday, but you just never know.

Finale

The final 50km is tough, very tough. First up is Col de la Croix Montmain, which is 5.6km at 6.1% (Cat 2) and this is quickly followed by Col de la Croix Rosier, 5.3km at 7.5% (Cat 2). Not only do we have the climbs, but there’s also some fast descents to deal with too.

Tactics

I couldn’t believe what happened on Tuesday, to see Pogačar attacking caught me by surprise. The start to this stage isn’t as hard, I don’t think we’ll see the same type of tactics employed by the GC teams. I expect this to be a classic breakaway stage, like usual, where the break forms is a mystery to everyone. Once it does go, all eyes will be on the finale. The final climb is a tough one, it slims down the list of potential winners, even though it crests with 28km to go.

Jumbo-Visma are in control of the yellow jersey, and with a big weekend ahead, don’t expect to see anyone except Van Aert to have freedom to chase the break. He clearly wasn’t at his best on Monday, which was another big surprise for me. The thing about a grand tour is that a rider performing poorly in one stage, doesn’t mean they can’t excel a couple of days after, don’t start writing off Van Aert just yet.

In recent stages we’ve seen Israel – Premier Tech performing incredibly well, just like at the Giro. Woods has a stage, Neilands was very close on Tuesday, and they have some more options who’ve yet to show themselves. They are one of the teams who benefit from not having to protect a GC rider, they can throw everything at the break. Other teams in that position include Movistar, Lidl – Trek and Soudal – Quick Step, it gives them more options for a stage like this.

As I mentioned in a previous preview, teams with multiple riders in the break have a better chance of winning. Say Van Aert is in the move, everyone will look at him and expect him to do more of the work, then riders fire up the road and if he doesn’t chase, no one else does. Winning a breakaway stage when you’re Van Aert isn’t easy, but the finale of this stage does give a strong rider the chance of shining. If the break is altogether going into the final 50km, the best climber has a wonderful chance of taking the win, but they also need to go well on the flat due to the distance from the last climb to the finish. Look at the start, look at the finish, which type of rider does it suit the most?

Also, keep an eye out for someone outside the top 10 looking to take some easy time back by making the break. The most likely will be Meintjes, but with three GC stages ahead, some will be reluctant to waste energy going for the break.

Ineos  – they’ll be looking at Kwiatkowski and Castroviejo for a stage like this. Kwiato has been going well, he’s performed well in two breakaway stages. They don’t start as the favourites to take the win, but both riders are quality.

EF  – they’ve got seven riders looking for the break but have yet to challenge for a win. I would think Chaves and Bettiol are their best options for this stage, but Cort can’t be written off.

Soudal – Quick Step  – Alaphilippe is improving, will he find his best legs before the end of the race? The problem for the team is that he’s the only real option for the win they have, they’ll be hoping he hits his peak soon.

Bahrain  – Mohorič is looking very strong just now, this is a great stage for him, lots of climbing and descending. Fred Wright is another possibility, but we’ve not really seen how his form is.

Movistar  – Jorgenson, Aranburu and Guerreiro look good for this one. Jorgenson is another who’s not quite at his very best, but his form is growing, and he could hit his peak soon. Aranburu will love the finish, but the final climb is a worry for him. Guerreiro did well in stage 6, he’d love another chance to go for a win.

Israel – Premier Tech  – Neilands is looking brilliant, but the team also have Woods, Teuns and Schultz. Having so many options is great for the squad, if they get a man in the break, they have a good chance of challenging for another win.

Lidl – Trek  – Ciccone and Skjelmose are their cards to play. After having a sore back, Skjelmose looks to be improving, and Ciccone is an enigma. When he has a good day, he’s exceptional, but predicting these days can be quite hard. Both riders are very strong, this is a great chance for the team to take another win.

Wout Van Aert  – started Tuesday looking great, but quickly blew his doors off and ended up getting dropped. I wasn’t expecting that from him, maybe it was post-rest day blues, especially considering how good he was on the Tourmalet. He’ll once again roll the dice and go for the break, but with all eyes on him, it’s hard to get away from everyone else. He’ll likely start the stage as the favourite, but winning will be complicated.

Rui Costa  – barely seen him in this race, which is weird as he looked brilliant in Tour de Suisse. If not him, Intermarché have the excellent Georg Zimmermann.

Ben O’Connor  – now out of the GC picture, he raced on Tuesday like a weight was lifted from his shoulders. After dealing with that disappointment, it would have been easy for him to feel sorry for himself, but he bounced back in the best way possible. He’ll look at this as another big opportunity, a stage win would turn the race from a disappointment into a success.

Ion Izagirre  – simply an excellent grand tour breakaway rider. Not only did he win a Tour stage from the break in 2016, but he’s also bagged himself three 2 nd  places since 2018. He’s a good climber, an excellent descender, and has an okay sprint.

Alexey Lutsenko  – he’s firing his bullets like he has an automatic machine gun; it seems to be the only way he knows how. No thoughts of trying to be clever, he simply smashes it until he explodes. It’s not the best strategy, but sometimes it works for him.

Prediction Time

I’m going to take some pressure off the shoulders of Van Aert and not pick him for what feels like the first time in the race, just watch him win now.

To win this stage you need to be a punchy climber, who can descend and sprint well. I’ll take a win for  Matej Mohorič .

Etape du Tour 2023 route reveal

tour 12 etape 2023

  • Related Articles

The 31st edition of the Étape du Tour will take place on 9 July 2023.

The course follows the same route as stage 14 of the 2023 Tour de France, starting in Annemasse and finishing in Morzine. Entries will open on Wednesday 8 November.

The 152km route takes in more than 4,100 metres of elevation gain, including the climbs of col de Saxel, Col de Cou, Col de Feu, Col de la Ramaz and Col de Joux Plane.

Check out the profile of the 2023 Étape du Tour:

tour 12 etape 2023

L'Etape 2023 - a case of déjà vu?

Etape veterans might notice the finish of the 2023 route looks familiar. That's because the final two climbs, Col de la Ramez and Col de Joux Plane, also featured in the 2016 Etape du Tour.

That's not a reason to skip the 2023 edition though, as the opening 100km take in a number of new climbs.

Col de la Ramez and Joux Plane are well worth a second visit too - with the latter rated as tougher than Alpe d'Huez by Sportive.com publisher Joe.

Here's what Joe had to say about the final two climbs back in 2016:

COL DE LA RAMAZ

The third climb of the day is the Col de la Ramaz which sees Etape riders climb 1,014 metres over 15.5km to the 1,619 metres summit. It has an average of 6.1% slope but that doesn't really tell the full story. The initial 6km goes at roughly 5%, followed by one kilometre of flat, before another kilometre at 8% and then two kilometres at a leg sapping 10.4%. After that you have a kilometre at 8.6%, then two kilometres at around 6.5%. The good news is that the final 500 metres of the climb is almost totally flat. For most Etape riders this will be a tough climb in the heat of the day - you will need to take this steadily and ensure that you are drinking plenty of water because if it is a hot day (and it very often is at this time of year) then the Ramaz will take a lot of energy out of you. For an average Etape rider the total climb is probably around 75 minutes and you should not think of this simply as the warm up to the Col de Joux Plane. The scenery is beautiful - plenty of hairpin bends at the start of the climb, followed by Alpine pastures and then the snow tunnels on the upper reaches. The surface will have been replaced for the Tour, removing one of the main complaints about the ride currently.

Off the top of the Ramaz (we think there will be a feed station at the top but it is possible ASO will decide there is not enough space for anything other than a water station) there is a nice long descent of 16km with a vertical drop of 960 metres. At the top it is a quite narrow road and you will need to be careful if you are surrounded by other riders; fortunately by this stage of an Etape the groups have usually sorted themselves out and you should be riding with people roughly the same speed as you. Towards the bottom of the descent as you get nearer Taninges the road gets wider and it should be a rapid and enjoyable ride. The town itself is not unpretty - it has Roman origins - and we expect there to be a feed station somewhere on the outskirts of the 3,000 population location.

From Taninges there is then a 13km drag along to Samoëns. We imagine you will be routed along the D907, which is mildly uphill (just 78 metres ascent over 13km) but will probably feel like somewhat hard work in the midday sun. You will ideally want to get yourself into a group on this section.

Samoëns is a pretty town, famed for its stonemasonry which were supplied by the numerous limestone quarries in the area. The town is dominated by a pretty (traffic free) square with a huge lime tree and nearby is an Alpine botanical garden. If you want to get your family to come and support you then Samoëns would be an excellent base, especially as it has a reputation for excellent Savoyard food.

COL DE JOUX PLANE

To be totally honest, we were quite surprised to see this stage chosen because of the toughness of the Col de Joux Plane. At 11.6km long with an average slope of 8.5% it is unrelenting. And at the end of a long ride it will be challenging for even the most race fit rider. If you haven't trained enough this will be a climb that finds you out. It starts with about 750 metres at 8.5%, followed by a 12% ramp for 300 metres, followed by a short section at 5% and then two kilometres at 8.5%. A short 'break' of 500 metres at 5% allows a little recovery but then you have 2km at 7%, 600 metres at 10.8% and then follows the last 5km at an average of just over 9% along exposed slopes with absolutely no shelter. Most people who have ridden this will admit that while it is not one of the 'iconic' climbs, the Joux Plane is one of the toughest in the northern Alps. Pantani ascended this climb in 33 minutes - if you manage to do this in double that time then 'chapeau' to you! Personally I rate this as a harder climb than Alpe d'Huez.

From the Ranfolly down to Morzine it should be pure joy and relief but you do need to be wary. The 11km descent is at an average of 6.5% with a maximum slope of 11.1% and while it is steep and technical at the top it is also fun. However when you are tired after a long day riding it is something that will test your reflexes and you should not relax and think this is just the final run in to the finish line. There are plenty of tight hairpin bends with steep slopes to keep you occupied. There is a small ascent on the ride into the centre of Morzine to tackle in the final kilometre but if you have got this far the adrenaline will keep you going and the thought of a refreshing beer (or about 16 hours in bed) should take your mind off the pain.

A general view of the peloton waiting at Olaeta after the neutralisation of the race due to a crash during stage 4 of the 2024 Itzulia Basque Country on 4 April 2024 in Etxarri Legutio, Spain

Jonas Vingegaard’s Tour de France defence in doubt after Basque crash

  • 2022 and 2023 winner fractures collarbone and scapula
  • Twelve riders crash on fourth stage of Basque tour

The Tour de France champion, Jonas Vingegaard, was taken to hospital with a broken collarbone after a serious crash on stage four of the Itzulia Basque Country.

Vingegaard also suffered several broken ribs from the high-speed accident that also included Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic among a group of 12 affected riders. “It was a nasty crash, but fortunately he is stable and conscious. He remains in hospital as a precaution. Thank you for all your messages,” Vingegaard’s team Visma-Lease a Bike said in a statement.

Six riders went to hospital after the incident, including the Australian Jay Vine, who was diagnosed with a fractured cervical vertebra and two fractures in his thoracic spine. “Fortunately, there were no neurological problems and there are no other serious injuries or skull injuries,” Vine’s UAE Team Emirates said in a statement.

Evenepoel’s team Soudal-QuickStep revealed the Belgian must undergo surgery on a fractured collarbone and fractured scapula. Roglic was the least affected of the big-name trio involved and he headed for the team car having received medical attention. The incident took place when the peloton was descending around a tight right-hand bend with less than 40km of the stage to go, one riding sliding out of the road and on to the bank, sparking a chain reaction as more followed.

The race was then neutralised until the finish, with only the six riders who had been at the front being allowed to sprint for the finish to try to win the stage, victory eventually going to the underwhelmed South African Louis Meintjes, who admitted it was a hollow triumph.

“It’s a sad day. I wish all the guys who crashed all the best and wish them a fast recovery,” Mattias Skjelmose, who took the overall race lead from Roglic, said at the finish. “My mind is with the guys who crashed, and right now I am not thinking about the leader’s jersey.”

Vingegaard won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 but with this year’s event starting on 29 June, doubt now hangs over his ability to defend his crown.

Despite making it to the final, Mark Williams has revealed he loves playing pool and is focusing on that more.

"I probably enjoy playing Chinese 8 ball rather than snooker, to be honest.

"I just want to play more, I’d like to play more tournaments this year to see if I can get any better."

He then went on to add: "I’m definitely not retiring, but a lot more pool is on the horizon for me."

Williams reacts

I did a great break there really [to win match]. "As good as any I did in the whole match. I just knew I had to make a one-frame visit the way the match was going. "I try to get my practice at the venues. I've been playing like that all season. Some of the people have played unbelievable snooker against me this season. "If I had a pick to play in the final, it would be O'Sullivan. He's the best player by a mile at a packed venue." Mark Williams ITV Sport

Allen sinks the black, but pots the white.

It doesn’t matter.

He wins yet another frame after amassing 81 points. Williams continues to wait for that elusive frame.

tour 12 etape 2023

Allen 3-9 Williams

Williams has had a wobble here, and the fightback begins.

Allen has now won three on the bounce, as we break in play.

Could the most unlikely comeback ever happen?

Allen 2-9 Williams

Well, well, well.

Some mistakes slipping into Williams' game, who misses a few easy shots.

Allen takes advantage and adds another frame to his score.

Allen 1-9 Williams

Mark Williams will just have to wait that little bit longer.

Mark Allen has finally got a score on the board, winning the 10th frame.

It's surely too little too late?

Allen 0-9 Williams

That's an astonishing break!

141 gives Williams a 9-0 lead in this astonishing display.

He is just one frame away from the final.

Are we all set?

Mark Williams is just two frames away from a final berth.

Will the Welshman clean up in this evening session?

Or can Mark Allen achieve the mother of all comebacks?

Lots to answer for from 7pm.

tour 12 etape 2023

Happy Williams

Mark Williams can be very happy with his display.

He looks destined for the final.

tour 12 etape 2023

Now we wait

The second semi-final resumes at 7pm.

Mark Allen would have to complete the most epic comeback we've ever seen to defeat a rampant and resurgent Mark Williams.

The Welshman looks destined to meet Rocket Ronnie in Sunday's final.

Allen 0-8 Williams

Well it looked for the world that Allen had a chance to win his first frame of the day, but it wasn't to be.

The Northern Irishman had a chance to pot the pink in order to set himself up for a finish, but unbelievably hit the ball OFF THE TABLE .

Another frame for Williams as session one comes to a close.

Allen 0-7 Williams

We have just one frame to play before session one comes to an end and Williams is looking in as strong of a position as he possibly could be.

He leads 7-0 as we head into the final frame - Allen must pull something out of the bag.

Allen 0-6 Williams

A much much tighter affair, but it still falls in favour of Williams.

Allen came close to winning his first frame, but a blue hanging over the edge of the pocket was the difference.

Dominance from Williams.

Allen 0-5 Williams

It's a Williams runaway train.

Allen is almost out of sight and you would imagine Williams has half an eye on that final with Ronnie O'Sullivan tomorrow.

It would take something special for Allen to win this now.

Allen 0-4 Williams

Mark Williams is looking so assured as he wraps up a fourth consecutive frame 124-0 with a 105 break.

Allen is struggling to even visit the table and he can't find much when he does.

It's a serious uphill battle for the Northern Irishman from hear on out.

tour 12 etape 2023

Allen 0-3 Williams

WOW! A superb showing from Mark Williams!

He puts 123 unanswered points on the table and wins the third frame.

It's not looking positive for Mark Allen he falls 3-0 behind.

Allen 0-2 Williams

Williams wins again, but it's a much tighter affair this time around.

The Welshman fought off Allen to win it despite his opponent tabling 50 points.

Allen 0-1 Williams

A dominant show of experience from Williams in the first frame.

He wins it with a comfortable scoreline of 88-4.

The Manchester crowd were full of applause for the Welshman. 1-0.

Allen 0-0 Williams

Williams is 58-4 up as things stand in the first frame.

It's not looking good for Allen. whose only points came from a Williams foul.

The Welshman is in full control of this first frame.

Here they come...

Williams and Allen have come out to the table ready for their first session in a crunch semi-final.

Action is expected to get underway imminently.

On your Marks

Mark Williams and Mark Allen are familiar foes facing each other 22 times in their professional careers.

The last time they met was only in February during the Players Championship with Allen coming up trumps in that battle.

His 6-3 victory may give him confidence for today's head-to-head.

While the Northern Irishman is also ranked higher in the world rankings than his Welsh opponent.

Williams is currently considered World No.8 while Allen is slightly higher in the rankings at World No.5.
