Virginia Safari Park
Gulf breeze zoo, alabama safari park, texas safari park, quick facts.
Zoofari Parks owns and operates Virginia Safari Park, Gulf Breeze Zoo, and Alabama Safari Park, which collectively bring in more than 600,000 guests annually. Zoofari Parks recently purchased 900 acres in Kaufman, TX, and has begun developing Texas Zoofari Park, which will open to the public in 2023. With a focus on conservation through education and animal welfare, founder Eric Mogensen has dedicated his life to caring for animals worldwide. He has spent over 50 years mastering animal care and nurturing conservation programs to help at-risk species worldwide.
Our story began with the opening of Virginia Safari Park in 2000, soon followed by the acquisition and reimaging of Gulf Breeze Zoo and then the development of Alabama Safari Park. Our story will continue as we expand into Texas, keeping conservation at the core of everything we do.
Did You Know?
The Virginia Safari Park has one of the most successful Ruppell’s Griffon breeding programs in the country.
Gulf Breeze Zoo is one of only two zoological facilities in the United States to house two types of hippos? Nile hippos and Pygmy hippos call Gulf Breeze Zoo home.
Alabama Safari Park is home to both the Grevy’s Zebra and the Grant's Zebra.
Virginia Safari Park was established in 2000 and is a beautiful 180-acre drive-through safari park that is home to more than 1,200 animals representing 85 species, many of which are endangered. Guest delight in feeding huge bull elk, bison, zebras, deer, and even the shy bongo while on safari. Virginia Safari Park also features walk-through exhibits, including Tiger Territory, Penguin Plunge, the Australian Walk-About, Giraffe Feeding Overlook, free-flight bird aviary, and more. The park offers unique encounters with their crash of Southern White Rhino, African Penguin, and sloth. Virginia Safari Park is also home to the King Cheetah, Africa's rarest cat.
Conservation is fundamental in the Park's daily operations. To date, the park has supported conservation efforts in more than 130 countries.
Before the acquisition in 2009, the Gulf Breeze Zoo, then known as Zoo Northwest Florida, had been hit by an economic downturn and faced the damages of Hurricane Ivan, resulting in permanent closure. Due to strong efforts from the previous owner and Zoofari Parks, the animals were able to stay comfortably in their own homes until the park was officially purchased, renovated, and rebranded to great success.
More than 200 major and minor renovations have been made to provide the utmost comfort and care to more than 1000 animals of more than 70 different species that call the zoo home. The transformation continues with three new exhibits opening in 2021, along with behind-the-scenes encounters with Nile Hippos, Reticulated Giraffes, and sloths. Future expansion for 2023 is in development.
Alabama Safari Park, a 350-acre safari park, opened in 2018 and works to provide animals with as natural a habitat as possible for the more than 450 animals living there. It features a 3-mile road where guests can feed Banteng, Grevy's and Grants Zebras, Watusi, Bison, Eland, Sable Antelope, and many other exotic animals free-roaming and up close, without barriers.
The park also features engaging walk-through exhibits and a beautiful Giraffe Tower where guests enjoy feeding numerous Reticulated Giraffe. Alabama Safari Park is currently in expansion mode with new exhibits under construction and exciting behind-the-scenes encounters in development.

this place took us by surprise ! It is not like every other safari park ! There were so many more animals than most and the bird feeding and giraffe + petting zoo/goat feeing were so much fun !! and not expensive at all, you can get the feed for all of the activities for 12 bucks and thats just after you drove around for about 1hr and a half through the safari area. Feed buckets are 5$ and the animal are all super friendly!!! Must go !!

Absolutely amazing!! You definitely should come take a visit here!! The drive through safari, giraffe feeding, bird feeding, and petting zoo are amazing, and I love that you can buy more than one bucket of feed! It is definitely worth the money spent as the memories are worth much more than money :)

We had such an amazing time as a family. I can't believe how affordable it is ($25 or so per person) for the experience you get. It's a beautiful, clean and organized place. We saw and fed a variety of animals. The entire safari experience exceeded our expectations. We cannot wait to return. The kids are still talking about it. The bird feeding was a fun treat after the safari as well. The staff were really friendly and accommodating. Can't wait to return.
Cute local drive thru park. Most of the animals you physically encounter are llama, emus, deer but a few others like zebra, bison and warthogs show interest. Buckets of food are $5 each and they encourage one bucket a person but that can really add up. Our family of 5 did just fine with 3 buckets and just managed how much you feed. We suggest holding super tight or not giving a full bowl at once because some animals can be a little food ggressive. We paid around $150 for our family of 5 which was expensive especially because the giraffes were not out there due to the cold weather (keep that in mind when going in the colder months). The petting zoo was also closed and the tractor ride was also not going (tractor ride is an additional separate expense tho) I think we would have given more stars if we had gotten the full experience that was included in the price of admission or if they had let us know at the gate that some things were closed and maybe discounted it a little. Our main reason of taking the family was actually to see and feed the giraffes so to find out at the end that they were not out at all, along with the petting zoo closure was disappointing. Just prepare to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours with driving thru and also keep in mind that admission doesn't include any food so that's an additional expense to keep in mind: safari food, birds, goats and giraffe food if you want to do it all). Lastly be warned that you may get damage to your vehicle. My passenger and drivers side has a lot of scratches from antlers :(
This was such an amazing experience!! We took our toddler and he absolutely loved it. Feeding the birds and giraffe were our favorite. Beautiful property, even the restrooms were lovely! Definitely buy at least 2 or 3 buckets of food for the safari ride
Such an amazing experience and so many animals to see. You can see that the property is very well cared for and all the staff are knowledgeable and helpful. I would recommend going to Zoofari in Kaufman!

Plan Your Trip to Texas Zoofari in Kaufman
Impalas and emus and warthogs, oh my! These are just some of the animals roaming the giant pastures of Texas Zoofari Park in Kaufman, Texas. This drive-through safari park experience lets you get up close and personal with wildlife (and not-so-wild life, hello llamas !) from the comfort of your car. We visited with family and had a great time. Here’s everything you need to know before you go!
What is Texas Zoofari Park?
Texas Zoofari Park, located in Kaufman, Texas, is a drive-through safari park. It’s situated on nearly nine hundred acres and has hundreds of animals, many of which are highly endangered (like white rhinos and the Père David’s deer). Along with the wild animals, you’ll find lots and lots of llamas – these sweet domesticated critters are just as fun to visit with as the wild ones. You can purchase animal feed to feed the animals along the drive, as well as the giraffes and budgies that you’ll encounter at the end of the drive.
How long does it take to drive through Texas Zoofari Park?
The road through the park is about six miles long. It takes about an hour to drive through. This is dependent on crowds, how long your food lasts (more on that below), and how much time you spend visiting with the animals. The property is split into several different sections (front, middle, back). We had the option to bypass the back safari. We of course didn’t, but if you have little kids and have run out of animal feed or need to get to the bathroom, this will shorten your trip a bit.
You can’t get out of your car during the drive, and there are no restrooms along the way. So be sure to use the bathrooms at the beginning of the drive.
Feeding the animals at Texas Zoofari
You can purchase food to feed the animals (you can do this in advance, when you buy your tickets online, or at the gate). There are four types of feed you can buy: wild animal feed, budgie feed, petting zoo feed, and giraffe feed. You must buy the wild animal feed before you enter the park, but you can buy giraffe feed (lettuce), budgie feed, and goat feed at the gift shop – which is where you’ll find those animals.
Feed is inexpensive. It was $5/bucket for the drive-through safari. Budgie sticks were $2/each, petting zoo feed $5, and giraffe feed $5/cup.
We purchased two buckets of feed for the drive. We had four people in the car. Next time I would purchase three buckets.
If there are lots of animals looking for food, you’ll go through feed quickly. If the animals aren’t hungry or you’re there on a crowded day, you might not need as much.

When is the best time to visit Texas Zoofari Park?
Over the years we have visited several parks like this, and I always recommend visiting on a weekday to avoid crowds and have a better animal experience. I have also visited on rainy days, and I find these days the best (lightly raining! not pouring or tornado/hail weather). The animals aren’t really bothered by light rain but people are, so you won’t have as many crowds. So don’t let a light rain keep you away.
I have also visited these parks on very crowded weekend days. It’s still fun! But the animals have already been fed and aren’t as interested in what you’ve got going on.
Can you feed giraffes at Texas Zoofari?
Yep! You can feed giraffes. They are not on the drive-through, so they won’t be sticking their heads through your sunroof, but you’ll find them in their own enclosure at the end of the drive. You can feed them lettuce you’ll purchase in the gift shop. (side note: did you know that the wild giraffe population has declined by 40% since 1999 due to development in their natural habitats?).
Feeding the Budgies
OK – this was SO FUN. The Budgie (parakeet) encounter lets you get up close and personal with hundreds of budgies. At one point I had ten of them climbing all over me. If you don’t like birds, you probably won’t like this . If you do like birds, this is super fun . The Budgie sticks are $2/each (we started with two but had so much fun we bought more) and the birds will come and land on you to eat from the Budgie sticks.
We found that the birds will also land on you to chew on your hair/clothes/phone/whatever else you have! Some of them do bite, but we got a kick out of it. I didn’t mind being in the middle of a parakeet fight or having my earrings chewed on, but I can see how some people might not love it. It was a dream come true for me and Claire, though!
Texas Zoofari Park or Fossil Rim?
I have blogged about Fossil Rim a LOT. Fossil Rim is a drive-through safari park in Glen Rose, Texas, that we’ve been visiting for years. We love visiting. You can visit Fossil Rim and then go to Dinosaur Valley State Park, making it a full day trip. We often take family from out-of-town to Fossil Rim.
There are a few things Fossil Rim has that Texas Zoofari Park doesn’t (cheetahs, more wildlife, giraffes on the drive, and some stunning views from the hilltop gift shop you will encounter halfway through the drive). You also have more to do around Fossil Rim (lots of dinosaur activities in Glen Rose!).
But with that said, it’s almost two hours away. Texas Zoofari Park is much closer to us. Aside from the giraffes sticking their heads in our sunroof at Fossil Rim (which is never a guarantee!), I didn’t feel like we were missing anything at the Zoofari Park.
I liked that we could buy extra food at the Zoofari Park (at Fossil Rim, you get one bag of food for the whole car). I loved the budgie experience. And while they’re not wild and I’ve seen plenty of llamas, I loved all the llamas on the drive through Texas Zoofari.
All that to say, you can’t go wrong either way. Next time we have visitors, I will take them to Texas Zoofari instead of driving all the way to Fossil Rim and I know they will have just as great an experience!
You can learn more and buy tickets to Texas Zoofari Park here .
And speaking of llamas – if you’re in North or East Texas, you can have a full llama experience at Shangri Llama in Royce City, Texas !

Experience the Beauty of Texas Safari
DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERA!!!
Texas Safari is full of history. It has been in operation since 1980, making it the oldest wildlife park in Texas. The original log cabin, in which the original settlers lived in and fought Comanche Indians out of, was built in 1850 and is still on the property. 2 barns built in 1870 are also located on the ranch. Today, the park is run by 6th and 7th generation Texans.
As a breeding facility, we strive to expand the population of endangered animals. Our mission is to maintain the wellbeing of each and every animal in our care. All proceeds from our cabin rentals go towards feed and veterinary care.
As a guest, you are welcome to drive around the approximately 1000 acre property to freely interact with the animals. There are 10 miles of paved roads for your use. There are many points of interest to explore on the property including the Tonkawa Indian caves and our Old Western Town. The views from higher elevations are breathtaking and encompass many miles of the Northern Texas Hill Country.
Be sure to visit the Tonkawa Indian caves, used by the Tonkawa and Comanche Indians. The Tonkawa Indians, a semi-nomadic group of hunters as well as growers, relied on wild game such as buffalo and deer as well as beans, squash, and other vegetables for their daily diet.
The park sits on the historic Chisholm Trail, which was originally used by Indian hunting parties and later became one of the largest trails for Texas cattle drives.
Feel free to spend some time fishing from our stocked 'catch-and-release' ponds, as well as the Bosque River, but remember to bring your own fishing gear. Please note that while our animals are friendly, they are still wild so treat them as such.
