This full day tour was really worth while because of the excellent organization and the beautiful landscape. Our driver and guide André is a wonderful person and in his friendly manner he told us a lot about his country and this great area we were visiting. On a rock site we had lunch and with surprise we noted that even champagne was served. We can only recommend this tour and are looking forward to return to Namibia soon.

NB: You have two options when viewing the rock paintings, a easy to reach option on flat ground OR a steep mountain hike to another site. Please dress according to the option you prefer.

The Spitzkoppe granite peaks are one of the most popular sights in Namibia. It is the highest mountain in the country and has been discribed as the metterhorn of Namibia  due to the shape of one of its peaks. The Spitzkoppe is known for its stunning beauty and the thousands of ancient Bushmen rock art paintings that is viewable. When you visit this amazing place, it will render you speechless, so be sure to add The Spitzkoppe Tour to your itinirary.

Your day starts at aprox 8:30 when we collect you from your accomodation in Walvis Bay or Swakopmund, and after a short briefing we depart in our 4x4 vehicle towards the odd holiday resort of Wlotzkasbaken, then visit the Zeille Shipwreck. From here you travel the dirt road inland to the mountains.

You arrive at Spitzkoppe at aprox 10:00 and then.Your fist stop is viewing the ancient bushmen artwork.

After learning about the geology of  The Spitzkoppe, you will have ample time to relax and explore the area and make use of the fantastic photo opportunities.

While you are exploring we set up lunch which is an assortment of finger snacks, cold drinks, wine, beer and local sweets.

From here  depart to the local gemstone market, an informal market that sells semi recious stones that are mined in the area, here you have the chance to purchase some of them. This will also help the locals as this is the only income many of them have.

From here we return to your accommodation to conclude the tour.

Walvis Bay: Another coastal town you might pass through is Walvis Bay. Known for its lagoon, it's a great place for birdwatching, especially flamingos. Boat tours are also available for dolphin and seal watching.

Namib-Naukluft National Park: As you get closer to Sossusvlei, you'll enter the Namib-Naukluft National Park. This park is home to the famous red sand dunes of Sossusvlei, some of which are among the tallest in the world. Dune 45 is particularly popular for sunrise photography.

Deadvlei: Located within the Sossusvlei area, Deadvlei is a surreal landscape with dead camel thorn trees contrasting against the white clay pan and the towering orange dunes. It's a must-visit spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Sesriem Canyon: This canyon is located near Sossusvlei and was carved by the Tsauchab River. It's an interesting geological formation, and you can take a short hike into the canyon to explore its unique features.

Damaraland: Depending on your route, you might pass through or near Damaraland, known for its striking landscapes, ancient rock engravings, and the possibility of encountering desert-adapted wildlife, including elephants.

Keep in mind that the road conditions can vary, and some areas may require a 4x4 vehicle, especially if you plan to explore off the main roads. Additionally, it's advisable to check the weather conditions and road status, as the desert environment can be challenging, and some areas may become impassable during certain times of the year.

What attractions or activities are noteworthy in and around Usakos, providing visitors with a broader experience beyond Spitzkoppe?

Usakos is a small town in Namibia, and while it may not be as well-known as some other tourist destinations in the country, there are still attractions and activities that visitors can explore to get a broader experience. Here are some noteworthy places and activities in and around Usakos:

Usakos Town: Explore the town itself to get a sense of local life and architecture. Usakos has a history dating back to German colonial times, and there may be historical buildings and points of interest to discover.

Messum Crater: Located to the northeast of Usakos, Messum Crater is a geological formation that attracts those interested in unique landscapes. It's a large impact crater with interesting geological features.

Moon Landscape: Near Usakos, there is an area known as the Moon Landscape, characterized by eroded hills and valleys that resemble the surface of the moon. It's a fascinating place for photography and to witness the effects of natural erosion.

Welwitschia Plains: The Welwitschia Plains, located in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, is known for its unique and ancient plant life, including the fascinating Welwitschia mirabilis, a plant species that can live for thousands of years.

Gross Barmen Hot Springs: While not directly in Usakos, the Gross Barmen Hot Springs are located to the northeast. This is a relaxing destination where visitors can enjoy thermal hot springs and the surrounding natural scenery.

Spitzkoppe: While Spitzkoppe itself is a bit north of Usakos, it's within a reasonable driving distance. The granite peaks and rock formations make it a great destination for hiking, climbing, and stargazing.

Naukluft Mountains: The Naukluft Mountains offer hiking opportunities with scenic views. The Naukluft Trail is a multi-day hiking trail that allows you to explore this mountainous region.

Bird Watching: Namibia is home to a diverse range of bird species. Consider bird watching in the surrounding areas, and you might encounter some unique avian wildlife.

When visiting less touristy areas like Usakos, it's advisable to check locally for specific points of interest, as information may not be as widely available as in more popular destinations. Additionally, the local community can often provide insights into hidden gems and cultural experiences.

Mountains of Namibia: Spiltkzoppe

German for ‘pointed dome’, Spitkzoppe is also known as Spitzkop , Groot Spitzkop or the ‘Matterhorn of Namibia’ . Nestled in the heart of Namibia’s vast landscape this iconic mountain, with its towering granite peaks, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, geological wonder, and ancient history, making it a must-visit destination for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Spitzkoppe is a collection of smooth, granite peaks or bornhardts situated between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib Desert of Namibia, it is one of the most beautiful parts of a tour to Namibia. The rocks are over 700 million years old, and the tallest outcrop reaches about 1,784 metres above sea level.

The peaks of Splitzkoppe

The summits stand out vividly from the flat surrounding landscape. The tallest peak reaches around 700 metres off the desert floor. A smaller peak, Little Spitzkoppe , is situated close by and rises approximately 1,584 metres above sea level. Other significant peaks expand out into a range referred to as the Pontok Mountains .

Bushman’s art & paintings

Various samples of Bushmen artwork can be observed on the rock in the Spitzkoppe region. ‘Bushman Paradise’ was made accessible through a chained gate, but has since lost its allure as mostly all of the 2000-4000 year old pre-historic rock artworks have been destroyed. You will still, however, be able to locate many good paintings around the base of the Great Spitzkoppe – specifically at the ‘Rhino Rock’.

If you wish to hike up any of the peaks, you will be required to have a rather high level of climbing expertise. Whilst the normal route to the summit is not incredibly difficult in present technical terms, it once was near to impossible to reach the top due to its isolation and harsh conditions in which it is set.

A climbing team made the first documented trip to the peak’s summit from Cape Town – an expedition led by S. Le Roux. The next group to defeat the peak pioneered a route up the northern extremes of the peak, after having failed on the southwest ridge. They found entry to the gully now referred to as the ‘scramble’, but ran out of time to attempt the last faces. They tried again four days later, but eventually gave up. Some of the earliest climbers could not scale the astonishingly smooth granite outcrop of around three metres high, and resorted to carving steps into the rock with a hammer and chisel.

Several months following that attempt, Hans and Else Wong, as well as Jannie de Villiers Graaff, reached the top of the peak on a November afternoon in 1946. For the following quarter of a century, the mountain kept its reputation as a 3 day hiking struggle.

This age came to an end in 1971, when the summit was conquered in just four hours by a team led by J.W. Merchant from the University of Cape Town. This party climbed all of the lower portions without the use of ropes and made their way through the challenging band without using the carved steps. They trekked back down in a mere two hours, and as they reached the bottom rain started to fall for the first time in more than a year.

The mystery of Spitzkoppe will always make the area worth paying a visit to.

Spitzkoppe Overview

‘Spitzkoppe’ is the popular term for a larger area known as the Spitzkoppe Nature Reserve.

This reserve is home to a cluster of granite mountains that are more than 120 million years old. They’re visually stunning, and all the more so because they rise out of the desert floor. 

There are a number of peaks within the reserve, the most famous being Spitzkoppe, Klein Spitzkoppe and the Pontok Mountains.

Of these, Spitzkoppe Mountain is the best known. It’s not only the highest in the park (at 1728m) but it also just happens to resemble the famous Swiss mountain, earning it the nickname ‘the Matterhorn of Africa’. 

As for wildlife, expect to see A LOT of chubby rock dassies, which call the area home. If you’re really lucky, you may spot a leopard high up, gazing down on you. (But don’t get your hopes up).

Spitzkoppe Location

Spitzkoppe is located in the Namib desert in the central-eastern Erongo region of Namibia.

Spitzkoppe is approximately 160 kilometres northeast of the popular tourist resort, Swakopmund, and 280 kilometres northwest of Namibia’s capital, Windhoek.

How to Get to Spitzkoppe

If you’d like to visit Spitzkoppe independently, you really need your own set of wheels (as is the case with the rest of Namibia).

Fortunately, Namibia excels at car rentals, especially those with rooftop tents and all the associated camping gear. This is our first choice, not just for visiting this area, but for travelling all over Namibia.

Of course, visiting as part of a tour is always an option and the many tour buses going through the park attest to this.  

You can go on a full day trip to Spitzkoppe or for a 2-day camping and hiking trip .

Camping at Spitzkoppe

For most visitors, spending a night camping in Spitzkoppe is the main attraction.

With vast open spaces, psychedelic rock formations and some of the best night skies in the world, Spitzkoppe completely embodies the full desert camping experience.  In fact, we rank it as one of the top camping experiences you can have in Namibia .

There are two main camping options:

• Spitzkoppe Community Rest Camp; and

Spitzkoppe Tented Camp

Spitzkoppe community rest camp.

Spitzkoppe Community Rest Camp (“the Community Camp”) is the ‘main’ Spitzkoppe campsite and what most people think of when they imagine camping at Spitzkoppe. It’s a community-run, basic campsite set inside the Spitzkoppe Mountain Reserve. 

The Community Camp is famous for its large, private camping sites set pretty far apart. That said, I was somewhat surprised when we rocked up to see some in relatively close quarters. 

It’s worth noting that the Community Camp gets really busy in the high season (June – September), so if you’re visiting during that time, it’s best to try to book ahead.

The website is temperamental, so calling the campsite is the best option. We justed rock up in June without a reservation and managed to get a spot, but it was busy and the choice of campsites was limited.

The campsites at Community Camp are on a first-come, first-served basis. This means that even if you have a booking, you are not pre-allocated a site. When you get there, you are given a map and the freedom to drive around and pick your own site. Oh and also, the map they give you is rubbish and confusing. 

It goes without saying that the popular ones get snatched up pretty quickly. These seem to be the campsites on the western side of the reserve.

Fortunately, this means that the eastern side of the reserve is pretty much ignored, and we think the best camping sites are found there! 

We personally recommend campsite # 17B. It’s fantastic and very few people go to the far east end, so it’s very private with great views.

Campsite #18A/B is directly across from 17B and is another great option. It’s nestled in the mountain and quite secluded. 

Overall, campsite # 1 is probably the most outstanding, but can get really windy, which can make camping there quite tricky. 

Important: if you see a campsite that has chairs in it, this means it’s reserved. Don’t be a dickhead and steal it from someone. 

Facilities at The Community Camp

We’ll be honest: camping at the Community Camp is essentially wild camping. There are long drop toilets at each site (bring your own TP), and that’s about it. 

You can find potable water at the reception, along with communal ablutions with hot water showers. There’s also a cute restaurant at the reception, and while we didn’t eat here, the reviews are pretty good.

However, the reception area is very far from any of the actual sites, so don’t plan on walking back and forth. If you need to go to the reception area for anything, you’ll have to drive. 

Community Camp Cost

Camping at the Community Camp costs 210 NAD per person per night (pppn).

It’s pretty expensive for essentially wild camping, but it is a beautiful spot and the money supports the community. 

The fee also includes your Spitzkoppe entrance fee (120 NAD pp), so if you plan on spending any time inside the park, it really is a better deal to spend the night. 

Located around 500 metres outside the Spitzoppe Mountain Reserve, the Spitzkoppe Tented Camp (“the Tented Camp”) is a different campsite from the famous Community Camp. 

The Tented Camp has pre-set-up bush tents and offers a bit more in the way of comfort and facilities than the Community Camp.

This is best for those who don’t have their own gear or are just seeking a few more amenities than the Community Camp can provide.

The space is quite beautiful and offers great views of Spitzkoppe, even though you are located outside of the reserve. 

Tented Camp Facilities

Each tent at the Tented Camp has its own private bathroom, electricity and braai area.

The bathrooms have a flush toilet and a shower – although reports go back and forth whether the water is actually hot or not. 

Tented Camp Cost

The Tented Camp costs 200 NAD pppn, but importantly, does not include entrance to the reserve (an additional 120 NAD per person). 

Wild Camping at Spitzkoppe

There are some really nice wild camping options around the area, but we don’t think it would be a responsible move to publish them on the Internet, so you’ll just have to look around to find them… 

Be aware though, they can get really windy. Like, really, really windy.

Spitzkoppe Activities

The main things to do at Spitzkoppe are hiking, casual rambling and enjoying the incredible scenery. 

Guided Hikes at Spitzkoppe

Unfortunately, all official hiking at Spitzkoppe must now be done with a guide. Welcome to Africa, baby!

There are a number of official hikes, which we have outlined below. These must be arranged in advance at the Community Camp reception.

Guides must be picked up at reception at a previously agreed-upon time (preferably between 6:30 am and 8:30 am) and must be transported in your car. 

These are the official Spitzkoppe hiking trails:

1. Gross Spitzkoppe Hike

• Cost: 600 NAD pp
• Duration: 4 – 5 hours

2 . Pontokke Hike

• Cost: 450 NAD pp
• Duration: Approx 3 hours

3. Golden Snake Hike

• Cost: Approx 3 hours
• Duration: Pricing is by group size – groups more than 4 cost 50 NAD pp; groups less than 4 cost 150 pp

4. Bird Hike (Herero Chat)

• Half day – 400 NAD pp
• Full day – 800 pp

There are two other short guided walks : Bushman’s Paradise and Small Bushman’s Paradise. These do not need to be arranged in advance.

Guides sit at the Small Bushman’s Paradise and Chain Ladders from 8 am to 6 pm every day, so you just need to rock up to arrange a walk.

Both of these don’t have a formal cost and are only priced by way of a tip to the guide.

As a personal recommendation, the hike to Bushman’s Paradise is lovely and worth doing. It gives a good perspective of the rock, plus the rock art is cool.

We particularly enjoyed the explanations of both the history of the Bushman people and the current community. We also loved our guide, Jennifer.

Informal Hiking at Spitzkoppe 

If you want a hike without a guide, there’s an informal Spitzkoppe hiking trail that you can do yourself that starts from campsite #10B which leads to a nice viewpoint of Sugarloaf.

There’s a clear trail with rock cairns to guide the way and it’s marked on maps.me .

The area is also good for casual rambling, with walking to the ‘rock arch’ a popular activity. 

Be sure to also take time to enjoy the sunset and gaze up at those beautiful desert stars!

Himba village will not only give you an in depth insight into the life and ways of the last traditional tribe in Namibia, but an amazing photographic opportunity as well.

A guide to spitzkoppe: where to stay, camping and things to do.

Oh, Spitzkoppe. This spot is a true hidden gem right in the heart of the Namib desert. I have such fond memories of my short time in Spitzkoppe. It’s without a doubt one of my favourite parts of my two-month overland journey through Africa. Many visitors often skip Spitzkoppe – it’s a little out of the way and takes some planning to visit. It’s a magnificent spot, and it’s well worth the effort. In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about planning your trip to Spitzkoppe.

Spitzkoppe is known as the ‘Matterhorn of Namibia’. It’s a group of distinctive granite peaks which rise above the Namib desert. It almost gives off Utah vibes. But there is something so magical and unique about this place. It feels like you’ve been transported to another planet (in fact, parts of the Space Odyssey movie were filmed here). There are no signs of civilisation. It’s so wild and rugged. When you hike up to the viewpoints, you see the desert for miles around you in all directions. It’s breathtaking.

Spitzkoppe is recognised for its hiking, stargazing and being home to some 4000-year-old Bushman cave paintings. Be aware, you are entering the true Namib desert here. There are no modern facilities and you’re in the middle of nowhere. There’s a small town nearby, but it’s advised to avoid this due to safety reasons.

How to visit Spitzkoppe

Spitzkoppe is between Windhoek and Swakopmund in Namibia. It’s about 100 miles (160km) from Swakopmund and 172 miles (277km) from Windhoek. It can be built into a self-drive road trip. Most overland tours including those with G Adventures include an overnight stop here.

Roads to Spitzkoppe

To visit this exceptional place by yourself, you’ll need to drive to the area. The gravel and sand roads in Spitzkoppe are not well-maintained so you’ll need a 4×4 vehicle to access the spot. Our 4×4 bus got a flight tire on the way into the park. The roads are very rough.

If you don’t fancy driving, you could look at joining a day tour. There are companies which offer day trips from Swakopmund . There are also overnight tours from Windhoek . To get the most from your Spitzkoppe visit, it’s well worth the overnight stay. 

Where to stay in Spitzkoppe

Accommodation options in Spitzkoppe are very limited. People generally opt to go bush camping here (see below for more information).

If that isn’t for you, there are a couple of options including: 

• Spitzkoppen Lodge : this accommodation offers chalets. It’s about a 30-minute walk away from the key attractions including the Natural Arch.
• Spitzkoppe Tented Campsites : this is camping but consists of permanent tents with more facilities than your average tent. 

Camping in Spitzkoppe

Camping in Spitzkoppe is a unique and spectacular experience. There are no facilities other than a drop toilet and you’re right in the heart of the desert. This is bush camping at its finest and one of the best places to camp in Namibia . 

I stayed at the Spitzkoppe Community Campsite . There was one other group off in the distance, but otherwise, we were the only group there. You’re about a ten-minute walk from all the main sights, so it’s a brilliant spot. There’s more information on the official website.

You’ll need to book your space in advance as it can be busy. It’s a very famous campsite (although when we were there, it was empty). To find a spot, it works on a first come first serve basis. The campsites aren’t assigned so once you check in, you can drive around and choose your campsite.

There are no facilities at the campsite other than drop toilets. There’s no power, flushing toilets or running water. The main reception has supplies, a small restaurant and hot showers, but it’s about a ten-minute drive away from the campsites. My recommendation is to take your food with you and enjoy bush camping for what it is. Make sure you have sufficient drinking water. The desert can get HOT and there is little shade.

Things to do in Spitzkoppe

Hiking in spitzkoppe.

Hiking is the major draw to Spitzkoppe. It’s a hiking mecca with some incredible and unique routes. There are challenging routes including the Matterhorn route and the Pontok route. You’ll need to hire a guide to do these. You can contact your campsite or lodge ahead of your arrival to arrange this. 

There are also some shorter hikes. They aren’t official as such but there are footpaths you can follow once you arrive at the campsite.

Rock climbing

Spitzkoppe is also a rock climbers paradise. There are around 100 different routes in the area. The rocks are very fragile, so you’ll need a guide for this. The best thing to do is speak to the reception when you arrive or contact one of the above accommodation options in advance.

Explore by yourself

We spent the afternoon exploring the area and attempting to navigate some of the shorter and easier hikes. The area boasts some incredible views, so it’s worth trying to get higher up to make the most of these.

A popular spot is the Rock Arch. This is exactly what it sounds like, a naturally formed arch. It’s a cool spot to explore (especially when it comes to stargazing). I loved spending the afternoon exploring the area.

The sunset I witnessed in Spitzkoppe was one of the best I have ever seen. We hiked up to one viewpoint and had a beer as the sun set. It was beautiful. The sunrise was also incredible. Don’t miss witnessing either of these on your trip to Spitzkoppe.

Stargazing in Spitzkoppe

I’ve stargazed in many places around the world. From New Zealand to Utah and the Galapagos, I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some of the most beautiful night skies. Seeing the stars in Spitzkoppe tops them all. It was incredible. You can see the night sky here for what it truly is and it’s wonderful. 

I’d suggest heading down to the Arch to stargaze and get some cool photos with the arch in the background.

Visit the rock paintings

Spitzkoppe is home to some famous Bushman cave paintings which are thousands of years old. If you want to see these, the best thing to do is to arrange a tour upon your arrival. Your guides can show you where the paintings are and the meaning behind them all. They’re in protected areas and the majority can’t be accessed without a guide.

Everything you need to know for your visit to Spitzkoppe – Erongo Region, Namibia

If you are looking for unique rock formations and beautiful viewpoints on rocks, a visit to Spitzkoppe should not be missed. I even went there twice during my 10-week tour of Namibia. When I passed it again on my way to Skeleton Coast, I decided to stay another night there. Spitzkoppe is also known as the Matterhorn of Namibia …

When you drive up, you can already see the tip of the iconic Spitzkoppe mountain in the distance.

A few times I stopped by the side of the road in the desert landscape to take a picture of Spitzkoppe, not knowing that I was on my way there the first time. I got closer and closer and closer to the pointy Spitzkoppe. Just before I reached it, the pointy mountain disappeared from my sight for a moment and I drove through Spitzkoppe Village. The people on the side of the road asked me for water, wanted to sell me all kinds of small souvenirs and then I realised how badly I had prepared myself for this visit to Spitzkoppe.

I had hardly any cash with me. I did have some water, I could manage, but I had to be very careful about what I spent my water on. In hindsight, this also proves to me that everything just works out!

I waved with a friendly smile at the people along the road and drove on. I had received a tip from a friend of mine a little later in the journey: Fill your old bottles with water from the tap here. We don’t drink it but the local people do, so you have something to give away and you also make contact easily. Hmm….this tip would have been nice here too. In the middle of the desert, it is not easy for them.

There is a water pipe but it does not always work, I understood on my second visit.

Everything you need to know for your visit to Spitzkoppe Erongo Region, Namibia

When I arrived at Spitzkoppe, where I would also camp, I checked in. I saw a restaurant a little further on, but I understood that they only served breakfast, lunch or dinner and did not sell bottles of water or other drinks or food unless I wanted a can of cola or something. I asked the employee if she had water for me. Yes, she did and a little later she arrived with a 15 litre jerry can that I could fill with water from the tap. It was very good water, she said, I could certainly drink it. So that day and the next day I used this water to make coffee and to cook my pasta and vegetables.

I was given a map and could drive onto the Spitzkoppe terrain. If I kept to the left, I would also reach the places where the Spitzkoppe campsites are situated. I went looking for them. She told me that I could camp near the natural pool and that I was also close to the rock arch. Both beautiful natural phenomena in these beautiful red rocks.

Rock Pool – Your visit to Spitzkoppe

After I parked my car under the spot where the Rock Pool would be, I walked right up to it. I saw a small shallow pool in the rock. It was quite green around the edges and therefore slippery. I sat down and put my legs in it, splashing water over me to cool down and enjoy the surroundings.

Then you sit there, on your own, no one to distract you and no one to disturb the peace…. At moments like that I always come to the conclusion that I am so happy with my life. That I am in such a wonderful place in this world again, which I fully enjoy.

Because I was afraid of burning in the middle of the day, I went down the rocks again. I had to get something to eat ready, so I grabbed my gas bottle and started boiling water to make some noodles . How handy isn’t it? That you just have everything with you!

Rock Arch – Your visit to Spitzkoppe

Rock   Arch is of course not to be missed during your visit to Spitzkoppe. It is a unique spot and you can easily walk to it from different sides. At first, I took the road through which you get a view of the arch. You just walk up the rock and get a great view of the arch, but if you want to go there, you have to make a nice climb. Not bad at all and I was happy to do so.

Here I made the climb to get a good view of the Arch. If you walk further, you go down and then you can climb up again to get into the Rock Arch.

When I was sitting there during my second visit, meditating just out of sight of the people at the back of the rock arch, I realised that more people were coming from that side. There was a guide who told them how they could easily climb up through a narrow corridor and then reach the arch so they could take nice pictures.

Rock Arch – Spitzkoppe

When they had gone, I needed to check out that side too. Then it turned out that I could walk down very easily via a narrow passage between the beautiful brown rocks. There was grass and some other plants and zigzagging between them, I reached a campsite in no time. ( There are several campsites situated around the Rock Arch )

The pictures from both sides are beautiful and if you have the time, just go up on both sides. Or go through the arch as I did on my second visit and go up on one side and down on the other.

What I really want to say… take your time and discover this unique place all around 🙂

Mountain Climbing – Your visit to Spitzkoppe

There are some places where you can go mountain climbing. There are some guides who sit there all day to take you up the mountain for a tip. They don’t ask a fixed price and so you give what you think it’s worth. I have not been to a place where these guys are and you really go up the Spitzkoppe. This is a possibility I was told..

So are you looking for a real challenge? Get out early to get to the top before the heat!

Visit the Ancient Old San Murals

I did go up the mountain with a guide at Bushmen’s Paradise. This is when you enter the grounds of Spitzkoppe, turn right and then right at the end, past the old grave and fort. You find a small parking place and soon a man comes walking towards you. He started to tell me about the San murals that were still clearly visible on top of the mountain.

I gladly went up and we slowly started to walk up the round smooth rock. In the beginning, we managed without holding on, but the higher we went, the steeper it got. So at a certain point I grabbed the steel wire to pull myself up. After about 10 to 15 minutes, we reached the top, or at least, we ended up in a kind of courtyard in this big mountain. I saw that there were many bushes and even small trees growing there. On one side there was a kind of natural canopy formed by the rock and the guide took me there.

Because of this natural shelter, the San’s wall paintings were well preserved. The San sometimes stayed here for a season, as long as there was water or as long as they could live from the food they could find. Then they would move on. So there seemed to be murals from different times. Super interesting to see and to hear the guide tell about.

Old grave and the old Fort – Your visit to Spitzkoppe

When I visited Spitzkoppe for the second time, I decided to visit all the places that are on the tourist map that you get when you enter. The first time, I had walked, explored the area on foot, this time I decided to drive around in a 4WD. So I drove right in search of the old remains of the life of the Germans here at Spitzkoppe. They built a fort here once and they also found a grave.

Old Fort Ruins – Your visit to Spitzkoppe

They have not really maintained it very well, it is indicated on the map but there is really nothing left of the fort and they don’t really take the trouble to show where it used to be or what it looked like. I think that’s a shame, you can still see a sort of step, a part where there must have been an outer wall, but that’s it. There is a sign Fort Ruines  without a picture so that you could form an image of it. Perhaps in the future this will be extended and given better shape.

There are also a few campsites in this area.

Hike a lot during your visit to Spitzkoppe

After cooling down at the natural pool with its lovely view during my first visit, I decided to go for a walk. It was still too early to start cooking, so I could go for a nice walk. I walked around for about 2.5 hours, over the rocks and along the long roads. I took my time to absorb the atmosphere. For a long time, I was staring at the vastness of the landscape from a rock, but I also just stood still on one of the roads.

This made me see a huge spider running… He suddenly caught my eye and of course I went after him because I wanted a nice photo 🙂 The spider was quite big and as scared as he seemed to be of me…I was scared of him too. It’s always good to realise that we are a bigger threat to animals in general than they are to us. They generally only attack if they feel threatened.

So I came closer but certainly not too close.

This second spider I saw a little further on dared me to come a little closer. This one was a lot smaller and so I have a sharper photo of it. For your image, the spider above I spotted from a distance of at least 5 metres walking across the road. This is to show how big it was 🙂

Drive across the property to fully explore Spitzkoppe

During my second visit to Spitzkoppe, I realised that I had only seen a very small part the first time. I decided that, before unfolding my rooftop tent, I would first drive around this unique terrain . I first drove as far as possible into the terrain so that I had several ways to go back. When you drive up Spitzkoppe, I turn left towards the camp sites, then at a certain point you can keep right to drive behind the big mountain and in between Spitzkoppe to the area behind it.

There are also a number of camping places there.

The area is so special, the colour is so beautiful, the stones and the greenery make the whole so peaceful. There is nothing in the area that does not belong and that does not make Spitzkoppe more complete. I found it almost magical. Of course, I was there at a time when it was very quiet. Both times there was only one fellow camper in the whole area.

Every bend you pass on your journey gives you new scenic views in this beautiful and unique area of Namibia.

Camping during your visit to Spitzkoppe

There are a great many campsites all over the park. Most of them allow you to experience a unique experience on the edge of high cliffs and beautiful, distant views. Most spots are also such that you don’t see or hear your neighbours. I have stood in almost the same spot twice. Close to the Rock Pool and therefore within walking distance of the Rock Arch. I found that just a nice spot with a beautiful view.

The advantage of camping here during your visit to Spitzkoppe is that you can also see this unique area at dusk. With a beautiful sundowner if you are lucky. And if you want to take pictures of the stars at night, that is also possible here. You are in an area where there is no electricity and the only light that can be found after sunset comes from you or your fellow campers.

Please note that there is no water or electricity at the campsites.

You need to take this into account before your visit. Make sure you have enough in your fridge and pantry so you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner at your campsite. The toilets at the campsites are a toilet with a deep hole underneath. So it is not very fresh, but for one day, in such a beautiful area… I am willing to squeese my nose!

There is logde  but it is on the other side of the area and not easily accessible from the campsite. You can use the restaurant at the beginning of the park. There are also open air showers. Before I left, I used these. They had good hot water and a very good shower. That was really nice!

All you need to know for your visit to Spitzkoppe

Coming & going to spitzkoppe – erongo region.

Each tour of Namibia has a different route, each person wanting to visit different highlights of this enormously varied country. That is why you can end up in Spitzkoppe from so many different angles. I have already told you that I have been here twice, so I will give you my routes. Both times I came from Swakopmund for my visit to Spitzkoppe. But I continued my roundtrip to other places. You will see that the distances and the times that you can do it are quite different from each other. Everything, of course, has to do with the roads and the area you drive through.

Visiting Spitzkoppe from Swakopmund.

• About 150 km and will take you around 1,5 uur hour

From the town of Swakopmund, where I enjoyed the sea and the delicious Indian restaurant Garnish, I drove to Spitzkoppe in about 3 hours. I always make several stops along the way so it could take you 2,5 hours. Especially at the coast, where there are many fishing spots and where you can see the rough coastline, I found it cool to stop several times.

Visiting Spitzkoppe from Windhoek

• About 300 km and will take you around 3 uur

There are always several roads you can follow. The scenic route, with beautiful views with gravel roads or the faster asphalt roads. The choice is yours of course. I did not drive from Spitzkoppe to Windhoek in one go. Therefore, I cannot tell you this route from my own experience. I drove back to Windhoek via Donkerhuk West and found the route from there to Windhoek really very cool.

Visiting Spitzkoppe from Brandberg

• About 130 km and will take you around 2.5 uur

After my first visit, I drove on to Brandberg. So I went further into Damaraland. I found the desert really impressive. Again, I made several stops along the way and enjoyed the emptiness and heat of this never-ending landscape.

Visiting Spitzkoppe from Donkerhuk West

• About 200 km and will take you 2.5 uur

Halfway Swakopmund – Windhoek you’ll find this spot. During my last week of my 10-week tour of Namibia, I spent two days here getting used to the idea that it was over. That was very nice and also very confronting. To notice that time had gone by so fast. That I had taken too little time for certain moments in places. Also knowing that you will always have that, no matter how long you are somewhere you are not at home….

The Spitzkoppe is situated about 120 km north-east of Swakopmund and is a mere 30 km away from the well-travelled route between Usakos and Swakopmund.

Actually the Spitzkoppe consists of two separate mountains: The large Spitzkoppe, which is 1728 m high and the small Spitzkoppe, which has a height of 1584 metres. Further west we also find the so-called Pontok Mountains.

For hikers and mountaineers the Spitzkoppe is a paradise. Beginners can practice nicely here and for professionals the ascent of the peak is a real challenge as it is difficult. The first ascent of the challenging west side was in 1946 and up to today only 600 roped parties have succeeded to reach the peak. One reason for this is also that during the summer months it is not possible to climb the Spitzkoppe due to the unbearable heat.

All around the Spitzkoppe hundreds of rock paintings can be found, same goes for the Pontok Mountains. Here you find the most prominent place of discovery, the so-called Bushmen’s Paradise. Unfortunately many paintings have been damaged by vandalism.  You will also find paintings of rhino here, which indicates that the animals must have roamed the area many, many years ago.

The Rock Arch is also a well-known formation and has featured as backdrop in numerous films already and which has been depicted in calendars, photographic competitions and in travel guides.
