For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

Best Adventure Group Travel: World Expeditions

Groups of hikers walking and camping around the mountains of Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions

World Expeditions has been taking adventurous travelers to remote locations all over the world ever since its first group trek through Nepal in 1975. Today, World Expeditions offers active itineraries on every continent. Intrepid travelers can opt for trips themed around mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hiking, and more.

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. Trips are created using the company’s Thoughtful Travel Charter as a guideline, which emphasizes respect for the environment, sustainability, having a positive impact on local communities, protecting wildlife, and more.

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Top Trip: Summit Africa’s tallest mountain on a fully-supported trek up Kilimanjaro on World Expeditions’ eight day trip up the beautiful Lemosho Route .

Best Budget Group Travel: G Adventures

G Adventures is one of the best tour companies for solo travelers as well, as most trips don’t have a single-supplement. You can choose to share a room with another G Adventures solo traveler, or pay extra to have your own space.

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Top Trip: G Adventures’ China Express trip is a great way to see the highlights of China if you’re short on both time and budget.

Trip Itinerary

Itineraries are guidelines; variations in itinerary may occur to account for weather, road conditions, closures, etc. and to maximize your experience.

Sat., Apr. 27 : Arrivals | El Paso

Welcome to El Paso! Please plan to arrive at your leisure today and take the complimentary shuttle to the Wyndham El Paso Airport Hotel. The group gets together for dinner tonight to get to know each other and your guide and talk about the week ahead. Accommodations at Wyndham El Paso Airport Hotel (D)

Sun., Apr. 28 : Fort Davis

After breakfast, we plan to do some birding en route to Fort Davis and the Davis Mountains, so be sure your binoculars are handy and your shoes are good for walking. We drive east about two hours to Van Horn where we take a break and then continue to Balmorhea State Park, a lush oasis. The park is located at the northern end of the Davis Mountains. Here an artesian spring pours forth millions of gallons of water, encouraging the growth of tall trees and marsh vegetation. The park is a haven for migrating birds, with such beauties as Painted Buntings sometimes coming in to the feeders. We look for Bullock’s Oriole, Western Kingbird, Pied-billed Grebe, and two species of rare desert fish. As time permits, we continue a short way to one of the larger reservoirs in this area, Balmorhea Lake. Here we may find a variety of ducks and shorebirds, and with luck, a flock of magnificent American White Pelican. Our afternoon drive of 30 miles or so down to Fort Davis is timed for good wildlife viewing hours, with a chance of seeing Mule Deer, Javelinas, Coyotes, or Wild Boar. This scenic route reveals tall cliffs of columnar volcanic rocks. Settle into your accommodations at the delightful Hotel Limpia and enjoy a first group dinner at the hotel. Accommodations at the Hotel Limpia, Fort Davis (B,L,D)

Mon., Apr. 29 : The Davis Mountains

Today we explore the Davis Mountains, a Sky Island mountain range in Texas. Learn more about the ecological significance of the Davis Mountains as a link between Mexico and the Rocky Mountains. In the morning we visit The Nature Conservancy’s outstanding preserve, high in the Davis Mountains. For many years the higher elevations of this range have been inaccessible as private land. Since the preserve was established, limited public access is allowed, and a number of very exciting birds have been recorded. Those familiar with the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona recognize Olive Warbler, Buff-breasted Flycatcher, Painted Redstart, and Dusky-capped Flycatcher, found there in similar habitat. Enjoy a walk amid large Ponderosa Pines, with a view of the highest peak in the Davis Mountains, Mt. Livermore. Permission to visit this area varies by the year, and if for reasons of fire restriction or other, we cannot visit, we have several other great Davis Mountain areas as alternatives. Returning by mid-afternoon, we offer an optional visit to historic Fort Davis, one of the best preserved post-Civil War forts in our National Park system. The volcanic geology of its setting is quite spectacular. Dinner is at the Blue Mountain Bistro tonight. Accommodations at Hotel Limpia (B,L,D)

Tues., Apr. 30 : The Post at Marathon | Prairie Dogs | Big Bend National Park

This morning we visit Davis Mountains State Park, where in some years Montezuma Quail come into feeders along with Scrub Jay, Acorn Woodpecker, and Green-tailed Towhee. It’s hard to tear ourselves away from this idyllic sit-down birding! However, adventure and Big Bend call us, so by mid-morning we head on. Passing through grassland habitat, we are likely to see Pronghorns and possibly Scaled Quail. We enjoy lunch at one of our favorite local restaurants in Alpine, then visit a lush birding oasis at a creek-side park that once housed the U.S. Cavalry. Today it is known as The Post, and its large cottonwood trees and small reservoir attract a good number and variety of birds like Vermilion Flycatcher, Summer Tanager, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, and possibly Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Driving back into extensive grasslands we visit an active Prairie Dog town to observe these animals’ lively and sometimes comical behavior. With luck a Coyote or Golden Eagle may be here on patrol. Then we turn south to Big Bend National Park, interpreting the geologic features on the way. We pass through low desert that was once so rich in Tobosa grass that the early settlers could cut it as hay. Our destination is Chisos Basin, which sits at a comfortable 5,400 feet, surrounded by mountain peaks. Here, we keep an eye out for Zone-tailed Hawk and other birds of prey. Relax, settle in, and enjoy dinner in the lodge’s dining room. A Say’s Phoebe may have a nest by the door; at night, Gray Fox and Javelina are sometimes seen from the balconies. Accommodations at Chisos Mountain Lodge (B,L,D)

Wed., May 1 : Big Bend National Park | Rio Grande Village

We get an early start this morning with a field breakfast in tow, so we can get to Rio Grande Village early enough for prime bird activity. Ro Wauer, author of The Birds of Big Bend, regards this as the most consistent location in the park to see good numbers of species, and today should be no exception. Painted Bunting often steal the show, but there is stiff competition from Greater Roadrunner, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Inca Dove, Indigo Bunting, and Blue Grosbeak. Take time to learn some of the calls so you can be aware of Yellow-breasted Chat and Bell’s Vireo; with luck, you hear the scream of a Gray Hawk. Common Black Hawk have nested here for several years, and Black Vulture can be seen along the river. Along the nature trail — a boardwalk through a beaver pond — the blend of lush cattails and rushes, desert scrub, and distant views of the Chisos is striking! Enjoy a picnic lunch with a view of the Sierra del Carmen Mountains. A siesta under the shade of the cottonwoods is a must before we return to the Basin. We stop at the Boquillas Canyon Overlook and Hot Springs Historic Site, as well as the park’s visitor center. Accommodations at Chisos Mountain Lodge, Big Bend National Park (B,L,D)

Thurs., May 2 : Big Bend National Park | Boot Springs

Enjoy a full day of walks and hikes in Chisos Basin. Those with energy can scale the nine-mile loop trail high into the Chisos, where we find nesting Colima Warbler. The entire hike is fascinating, and we have all day to do it, so many can participate. We climb steadily through oak and juniper woodland, finding an abundance of Mexican species such as Evergreen Sumacs and Drooping Junipers. Fresh-flowering Texas Madrones are magnets for warblers. We often find Townsend’s, Hermit, Yellow-rumped, and sometimes Orange-crowned and MacGillivray's Warblers. Wildflowers and brilliant cactus blooms brighten the trail. In sheltered Boot Canyon we find huge pines and Arizona Cypress, a Mexican relict species. The route down through Laguna Meadows opens up to great vistas and more birding. Listen for calls of Hutton’s Vireo and Bewick’s Wren, as well as the trill of Broad-tailed Hummingbird during courtship displays. Those who do not wish to scale the mountain can enjoy a very special hike to a place where orchids and Cardinal Flower grow at a backcountry desert spring (if we have a large enough group for two guides). This oasis is great for birding and affords a visit to the Old Sam Nail Ranch, one of the best birding spots in Big Bend. If we have a small group, those not on the long hike can walk partway with us, or enjoy free time in the basin where the park may have activities scheduled. Dinner is once again at your leisure. On this, or another evening, your guide offers an optional drive out to a location where we have a great chance of observing Elf Owl, Common Poorwill, and possibly Lesser Nighthawk. Accommodations at Chisos Mountain Lodge (B,L,D)

Fri., May 3 : Big Bend National Park | Burro Mesa Pouroff | Santa Elena Canyon

Today we head west towards magnificent Santa Elena Canyon. Our first stop is at the Old Sam Nail Ranch, where water coming from a windmill attracts Varied Bunting and a variety of other migrant songbirds. We then walk to Burro Mesa Pouroff, a unique geologic feature where unusual plants like the Texas Persimmon and Texas Buckeye bear fruit that attracts some of the larger songbirds. The arid hills provide good habitat for Black-chinned Sparrow, while the canyon seems to echo with the songs of Rock and Canyon Wrens. We have lunch at Cottonwood Campground, another oasis with large trees and a Hackberry and Lotebush hedgerow that provides shelter and food for migrants. In some years, we see waves of birds coming through — grosbeaks and buntings seem especially fond of this area. We may also find Lucy’s Warbler in the dry mesquite, and Hooded, Orchard, and Bullock’s Orioles. In the afternoon, after our siesta, we discuss the vivid geologic story of the Big Bend region. Visit historic Castolon, where ice cream is a welcome treat. In the late afternoon, the sun is off the trail into Santa Elena Canyon, so we can enjoy a walk along 1,000-foot limestone walls laid down during the Cretaceous Period. Watch swallows hunt over the river and listen for the calls of White-throated Swift. From here we take a back road north to the West Entrance of Big Bend, and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant as unique as its desert surroundings. Accommodations at Chisos Mountain Lodge (B,L,D)

Sat., May 4 : Big Bend National Park | Blue Creek | Christmas Mountains

Today we say good-bye to the scenic Chisos Basin. But a great day is in store as we visit the Christmas Mountains and the home and feeders of Carolyn Ohl-Johnson, a grand finale of bird activity where difficult to find species like Lucifer Hummingbird and Varied Bunting can be found with ease. Carolyn has worked tirelessly to create a stunning oasis just north of Big Bend. This stop today is a real treat, and a fantastic way to round out our trip. By now the arid landscape, and its riches of cactus, vistas, birds, and wildlife is a part of you. We are sure to stop and visit the wonderful Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross University and the local cactus garden often replete with flowers before dinner at the Reata restaurant, a perfect place to celebrate the end of our journey. Their menu is a delight and we plan to enjoy a great final dinner, reminiscing with now familiar travel companions. Accommodations in Alpine (B,L,D)

Sun., May 5 : Departures from El Paso

Our journey comes to an end today in El Paso. We have a four-hour drive, so plan to arrive at the airport by 11:00 AM (time change works in our favor today!) for flights out NOON or later. (B)

Essential Information +

This information is important for being prepared for your journey; we want you to have the best experience possible. If you only read one section, this one is key!

Ahead of Your Tour

  • Please talk with your doctor about general health needs. It is a good idea to consult with your doctor about general vaccinations recommended for travel.
  • Please plan to make air travel plans only after the minimum group size has been met. We will send you a confirmation email as soon as the trip has been confirmed. After you make travel reservations, please send a copy of your travel itinerary to the Naturalist Journeys office at [email protected] .
  • Travel insurance in case of serious medical emergency is recommended. Full health coverage and repatriation is available through Allianz Travel Insurance .
  • Soft sided luggage/duffel bags are easiest for packing the vans. Remember to pack essential medications in your carry-on luggage, as well as one day of clothing and optics in case of luggage delay.

Health Information

We will share a copy of your health and emergency contact information with your guide. This information will be kept confidential but is very important in case of a medical emergency. In addition to bringing any prescription medications with you, we recommend that you have a copy of the prescriptions in case of loss.

Pace of the Tour & What to Expect

You will receive a Schedule-at-a-Glance and list of hotels (our eContact List) a few weeks before your departure. This will serve as an outline for each day and alert you to any recent changes made in the schedule or to our hotels, if needed.

Our journeys are set up to follow the rhythm of nature. Our focus is on birding and nature; we offer full, well-planned field days and often get up early for that magical time around dawn. We generally follow the published itinerary, but we stay flexible to the weather, wildlife opportunities and the interests of the group. Your guide will keep you apprised of the next day’s schedule at each evening meal, noting what to bring and what to prepare for. Questions and/or concerns are welcome.

The pace of our Naturalist Journeys tours is moderate; to fully participate you should be able to get in and out of vehicles several times a day, and walk 1-3 miles over uneven terrain . It is important to participate with a flexible attitude as adjustments may be made in our schedule to make the most of our time in the field or for other purposes at your guide's discretion. We are not a “listing” bird company that drills down on target species, but at times we do wait for those special species unique to the places we visit. During the day, we take time to stop for photos and for educational opportunities to learn about conservation projects, landscapes, and geology. We appreciate other taxa as well as birds, with mammals often the biggest draw but plants and butterflies are also very popular. Our clients often lend their own expertise to the mix.

We like to make meals a fun and memorable part of the experience, too. Breakfasts are often at hotels, and we carry snacks, fruit, and water in the vans each day. Lunches are a mix of picnics in the field (weather dependent) and a chance to dine with locals at small cafes and restaurants. For dinner, we pride ourselves in our homework to keep up with the best choices for dining, choosing restaurants with atmosphere that specialize in local foods. On occasion we keep dinner simple to go back out in the field for sunset wildlife viewing or night walks. In some remote locations, our choices are limited. If you are tired, room service for dinner may be an option you can choose.

Food & Drink

We carry water and juices/cold drinks in the cooler each day, and sodas if people like them. Please also plan on bringing and filling your water bottle for hiking each day. We try to use as few plastics as possible!

Packing, Clothing & Laundry

Soft sided luggage/duffel bags are easiest for packing the vans. Please pack essential medications in your carry-on luggage, as well as one day of clothing and optics in case of luggage delay.

Dress is informal and is casual even at restaurants. Layering is a great way to stay comfortable. Protective clothing is essential, whether it be from sun, rain, cold, insects, or vegetation. You need closed toe shoes, and wear comfortable walking shoes with good tread. Hiking boots with good support for hiking and on rocky terrain can work well.

Spending Money

Many people ask how much to plan to bring as spending money. Part of that depends on how much you want to shop. Most shops will take VISA and MasterCard or American Express. Typical items people purchase include local souvenirs and T-shirts, caps, and natural history books.   You may want to bring cash for drinks with dinner (if available) or smaller local purchases.

Expect the normal tipping protocol to apply for hotel maids and bar service. If at the end of the tour, you would like to show your appreciation to your guides, tipping is entirely appropriate but at your discretion. We hope that you will be pleased with all professional services. Gratuities for group meals are included. For your birding tour guide, we suggest $10-$15 per day per guest. Note that if there is more than one guide, this amount can be split among them.

Cell Phones & Internet Service

Wi-Fi and cell phone service are available in most US destinations, although there are some exceptions in remote locations. Wi-Fi is generally provided in all hotels, lodges, and restaurants you visit, at least in public areas. Please refrain from taking or making cell phone calls in the vehicles when traveling with other passengers unless it appears to be an emergency as this disrupts other guests – please plan cell phone calls on your own time.

Smoking is not permitted in any vehicle or in any situation where the group is participating in an activity together, such as a vehicle excursion or a guided walk. Please respect all designated smoking areas at hotels and restaurants.

Transportation

For this tour, your guides will drive travelers in either full-size or mini-vans or a combination of those two. We ask all attendees to please rotate your seating, so you ride with different drivers and alternate between front and back seats.

Photo Release & Sharing

We take many group photos and will share photos with the group. And after your tour, we will organize a chance to share photos via Dropbox or Google Photos. Please note that this is our policy and if you prefer to be excluded, we need to know ahead of your tour.

By registering for this tour, you agree to grant to Naturalist Journeys and its authorized representatives permission to record photos and/or video of your participation in the tour. You further agree that any or all of the material photographed may be used, in any form, as part of any future publications, brochures, or other printed materials used to promote Naturalist Journeys, and further that such use shall be without payment of fees, royalties, special credit or other compensation.

Please contact Naturalist Journeys by email at [email protected] or telephone our office: (520) 558-1146 or toll free: (866) 900-1146 if you have any questions. Many thanks for traveling with us and we hope you enjoy your journey.

Safety & Best Practices

Spring temperatures in Big Bend National Park average in the 70s-90s during the day, even rising over 100 at times. It can also dip into the 30s overnight, and it will be cooler at higher altitudes. It smart to be prepared. Layered clothing is a good strategy.

The sun is strong. Pack to protect yourself with clothing, hats and sunscreen. Lightweight pants, and light, long-sleeved shirts are ideal.

Comfortable closed-toe footwear with good tread is essential. A lightweight walking stick or trekking poles may be helpful.

Your guide will provide helpful advice on coping with snakes, scorpions, spiders and other borderland creatures. They will also bring ample water along to help insure that everyone stayes hydrated. Guides are certified in CPR and First Aid, and will have a first-aid kit handy.

The National Park Service promotes following the Leave No Trace Principles , and we are happy to join with them in this. It is important to be conscious of the effects our actions may have on plants, animals, other people, and even entire ecosystems.

Known for having great visibility and plentiful marine life, the Big Island is one of the best places in Hawaii to get out your snorkel gear. Underwater lava tubes, the Hawaiian state fish, and historic monuments are just some of what you can expect from snorkeling on the Big Island.

Add in vibrant reefs plus the chance to see dolphins and whales (in winter) and the Big Island soars straight near the top of our list for snorkeling in Hawaii.

Hawaii’s Big Island is actually our #2 in terms of the best islands for snorkeling , although just because it isn’t our favorite doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have some seriously incredible places to dive below the waves in search of sea turtles and colorful fish.

These are the nine best Big Island snorkeling tours and everything you need to know about jumping on a snorkeling excursion here.

Get everything you need to plan the rest of your Big Island trip here: Take a deep dive and get all you need to know with our Big Island Travel Guide Figure out the best part of the Big Island to stay on and explore where to stay Explore the best beaches on the island and even more activities to keep you busy

The Best Snorkeling Tours on the Big Island

Best kealakekua bay snorkeling tours.

Kealakekua Bay is a marine life sanctuary and one of the Big Island’s most popular places to snorkel. We highly recommend hopping on a snorkeling tour if you want to experience this area as getting there on foot is challenging with a steep hike.

1. Kayaking Snorkeling Tour

This snorkeling tour takes place at the Captain Cook Monument and combines the fun of a kayaking trip with your snorkeling experience. You’ll paddle out in stable, double kayaks from Kealakekua Bay to reach the coral gardens that surround the monument. Along the way, your guide will tell you about the history of the area.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to be aware of self-rescue kayaking techniques as this is not a beginner kayaking trip. Drinks, snacks, and your snorkel gear are provided. This tour is 2.5 hours in length and is recommended for those aged 7 to late 60s. There’s also a good chance of spotting spinner dolphins while you’re kayaking out to the monument, and even humpback whales in the winter months!

It’s also possible to DIY this tour, renting your own kayak from Ehu and Kai Adventure in Kealakekua Bay, but we highly recommend that you join the tour to get the most out of the experience.

2. Small Group Snorkeling Tours

Not into the idea of snorkeling with a big group? Then this is just the tour for you !

Head out with a group of no more than 12, exploring the beautiful Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook Monument, one of the best places to snorkel on the Big Island. You’ll sail out to the snorkeling spot from Keauhou Harbor located just north. Spend your three hours of uninterrupted snorkel time looking for Hawaii’s state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua’a, or the lauwiliwilinukunuku’oi’oi’ele’ele. Both of these are only found off the Kona Coast!

Your vessel for the tour is Hawaii Oceanic’s 27-foot Force Marine powerboat, built in Hawaii and made specifically for its unique ocean conditions. The boat is comfortable with plenty of shade to escape the Hawaiian sun. This tour allows children 5 and older. Snacks, drinks, and snorkeling gear are all provided.

Big Island snorkeling tours - humuhumunukunukuapua'a

3. Larger Group, Larger Boat

This environmentally-friendly tour onboard the spacious FairWind II boat is a wonderful way to experience snorkeling at the Captain Cook Monument – with the fun addition of waterslides!

While the crowd might be larger than others (this tour can accommodate up to 90 people), it’s perfect for families as all ages are welcome – including pregnant women. Push off from Keauhou Harbor and make your way south to the stunning Kealakekua Bay with breakfast, lunch, and drinks included.

All meals provided are vegan to maintain their environmentally friendly status but with Kona coffee, banana bread, BBQ pulled jackfruit, various salads, homemade pickles, chips, and cookies, you won’t miss the non-vegan options.

This tour is extra comfy as there are two bathrooms onboard, there’s plenty of shade, and ride-alongs (those who aren’t snorkeling) are also allowed. Snorkeling gear is provided.

4. Catamaran Snorkeling Trip

Revered as one of the best snorkeling areas in Hawaii for its crystalline water and abundant tropical fish, this 50’ catamaran tour sets sail for Kealakekua Bay twice a day. You’ll spend about 45 minutes sailing on either end of your snorkeling session, enjoying the beautiful views of the Kona Coast as your guide details the area’s history and any interesting landmarks along the way.

Once you reach the marine sanctuary of Kealakekua Bay, you’ll have an entire hour to snorkel around searching for Hawaiian green sea turtles, colorful fish, and even spinner dolphins. You’ll also have the chance to spot humpback whales in winter !

If conditions are good, you may have the opportunity to tack on an additional snorkeling spot, the Red Hill. Underwater lava tubes and archways will reveal themselves just beneath the surface – along with vibrant tropical fish.

Luckily, all ages are welcome on this tour as the catamaran offers smooth sailing. Continental breakfast or deli-style lunch (depending on departure time), snacks, drinks, and snorkel gear are provided making this tour a no-brainer. You can also purchase alcoholic drinks. Two bathrooms are on board the Hoku Nui as well as some shade in the galley.

5. Rafting Snorkeling Trip

One of the more adventurous trips to Kealakekua Bay, this snorkeling trip takes place aboard Captain Zodiac’s Power Raft. Unlike some of the other tours, this unique vessel allows you access to sights along the Kona Coast you can’t see otherwise like blowholes and sea grottos.

They offer two types of tours, the 5-Hour Beat the Crowds and the 4-Hour Kealakekua Bay Tour . Both go to the same incredible snorkeling spots. The 5-hour tour perfectly times your snorkel adventure to beat both the early morning and afternoon crowds, giving you a more intimate experience (as the name suggests).

Tours are only suitable for children ages 4 and up and leave from the Kona Marina . The 5-hour tour is punctuated with lunch served between your snorkeling sessions. On your way back to the marina, you’ll have the chance to investigate the sea grottos, caves, and blowholes that can only be seen from the agile zodiac.

Keep in mind that because this is a zodiac tour there is no shade. If you’re prone to seasickness, this trip could trigger it more easily due to the nature of the vessel.

Best Kona Coast Snorkeling Tours

6. pawai bay snorkeling tour.

Explore the exclusive Pawai Bay onboard a retired Navy SEAL vessel on this snorkeling tour . You’ll head out from the convenient location of the Honokohau Harbor in Kona to reach the stunning Pawai Bay. This is frequently touted as one of the best snorkel spots on the Big Island but is impossible to reach unless you arrive by boat.

Take in the lava rock coastline during your trip. It’s not possible for non-natives to step foot on this sacred land which also makes it impossible to snorkel from dry land here. The craggy coast creates the perfect underwater hiding place for eels, turtles, and octopus and you’re sure to see Hawaii’s endemic reef fish as well. Keep your eyes peeled for spinner dolphins on your way out to the snorkel spot and humpbacks from December to March.

You’ll get briefings on the wildlife and surrounding area’s history before jumping in the water. Snacks, juice, and sparkling water are provided, along with snorkeling gear. The ride out is just 15 minutes which means you get to spend more time snorkeling in this stunning marine reserve.

Children must be 3 years of age to enjoy this tour. Due to the nature of the vessel, this tour is not recommended for those who are pregnant or who have had a recent surgery.

7. Kona Coast Snorkeling Tour

This 3-hour tour with Ocean Eco Tours heads out to either the famous Kealakekua Bay or Honokohau-Kaloko (one of America’s newest national parks), depending on what area has the best ocean conditions.

You can expect to see tons of beautiful marine life, including the Hawaii state fish, and spinner dolphins, along the Kona Coast’s teeming reefs. If you’re new to snorkeling or haven’t gone in a while, this is a great refresher as the crew gives you a Snorkeling 101 course before you head out.

The whole family is welcome on this tour, no matter their age, and including ride-alongs at a discounted price. Snorkel equipment, snacks, and drinks are included.

Best Hilo Snorkeling Tours

It’s a good idea to go snorkeling with a tour near Hilo because of the strong currents that can kick up on the Big Island’s windward side. Jumping on a tour provides added safety in terms of both equipment and eyes on the water and ocean conditions.

8. Beach Snorkeling Tour

Located on the Big Islands’ eastern coast, highlights of this snorkeling tour with Hilo Ocean Adventures include swimming along a striking black sand beach and floating alongside sea turtles! You’ll visit two different snorkeling spots on this half-day adventure.

This particular tour is great for those who have never snorkeled before and is suitable for children too. Your snorkel guide will be there to teach you the basics and to help along the way. Aside from learning the ins and outs of snorkeling, your guide is also a wealth of knowledge on the area’s unique geography including the black sand beaches and volcanoes. One of your stops for the day is especially well known for its abundant sea turtles.

Snacks and juice are included. Because this tour leaves from the beach, all ages are welcome to join.

9. Boat Snorkeling Adventure

Hop aboard a 35’ Wellcraft Small Yacht for a little touch of luxury on this two-hour snorkeling adventure in Hilo ! This quick tour takes off from Hilo Bay with an expert, local guide to help you spot the spinner dolphins and other wildlife along the way. They’ll also give you a briefing about the animals you might encounter while snorkeling and the landmarks you can spot while sailing to your destination.

After reaching your snorkeling spot your guide will help you look for incredible marine life like sea turtles, eagle rays, eels, and vibrant reef fish.

This experience is only suited for those who are age 8 and up. Snorkeling gear is not provided! If you need to rent gear you’ll need to arrive ahead of time to be properly fitted. While this tour is a quick out and back, it’s worth it for the added possibility of seeing unique wildlife.

Big Island Snorkeling Tour FAQs

Which side of the big island is the best for snorkeling.

The best area to go snorkeling on Hawaii’s Big Island is the leeward side of the island, especially in the summer months. Some of the best snorkeling spots are at the Captain Cook Monument in Kealakekua Bay, Two Step at Honaunau Bay, and Kahalu’u Beach Park. Some of these locations will require that you be a more advanced snorkeler and swimmer. Always check ocean conditions before hopping in the water!

Are snorkeling tours on the Big Island worth it?

We used to find ourselves squarely on one side of this debate: snorkeling tours were not worth the money. However, as we’ve done more of them (and gone on great tours), we’ve come to really appreciate that a good snorkeling tour is definitely worth the time and money for a number of reasons:

  • You can snorkel in hard-to-access areas: Most of the Big Island snorkeling tours take you to spots that aren’t easily accessible from the shore. These places are often challenging (or impossible) to reach without a boat, like Kealakekua Bay or the exclusive Pawai Bay. Because these spots are harder to reach your chances of seeing abundant marine life are higher!
  • Access to a naturalist: You’re there to snorkel and have fun, but there’s also something to be said about actually learning more about Hawaii, the ocean, and sea life while you’re on your tour. The best boats come with fantastic naturalists who can educate you on what you’re seeing and answer any questions that you have.
  • A crew dedicated to keeping you safe: Snorkeling is a fun activity but there are times when it isn’t so safe. When you head out on a quality boat tour, you have a crew that is dedicated to making sure their passengers stay safe. That means providing you with good gear, having people in the water to help anyone in distress, and making sure to take you to places that are safe.
  • Excellent gear: We own our own snorkeling gear but we almost always leave that at home and use what our tour provides. Why? The quality of the equipment is great, they take away any hassle of cleaning it, and we get to try out new brands. While rare, some tours don’t provide your snorkeling gear for free. Look for this info in the fine print.
  • Easy and all-inclusive: Beach days require some planning — bringing the gear, finding a spot, and packing enough food and water. A snorkeling tour requires a lot less planning. They take care of the food and drink for you. Just bring your towel and your favorite reef-friendly sunscreen!
  • Better reef and environmental protection: Protecting the reef and the sea life in Hawaii is very important. When you travel on a guided snorkeling tour, there is little chance that you’ll find yourself stepping on and damaging coral or violating any of the animal protection laws that are in place.

While you can of course snorkel from the shore on the Big Island, one good, quality snorkeling tour is a worthwhile experience. There’s a snorkeling experience for everyone, whether you’re a novice or an expert. Seeking out destinations you couldn’t otherwise reach and spotting wildlife that might not be as common at snorkeling spots near shore are two huge reasons why a tour is worth the extra money!

What can you expect on a Big Island snorkeling tour?

Although all snorkeling tours are different, these are some of the things you can generally expect from a Big Island snorkeling tour.

  • A naturalist or experienced guide: These guides can educate you on what you’re seeing as well as how best to keep you and the marine life safe. They are extremely knowledgeable and love bestowing their information to guests. Be sure to listen up when they’re talking about the wildlife and both the geographic and historic sites along the way.
  • Snorkeling gear: Most tours provide you with safe snorkeling gear. This is great because it means that you won’t have to lug your snorkeling gear back and forth. Obviously, if you want to bring your own, that’s okay too! Just know that most snorkeling tours don’t allow guests to bring full face masks as they have been deemed unsafe (they have a tendency to leak and make it difficult to communicate with the crew).
  • Food and drinks : Most tours provide snacks and drinks at the bare minimum while others pull out all the stops with a continental breakfast and deli-style lunch. No matter which option you choose, this is a welcome addition as it means you won’t have to bring along a heavy cooler. You’ll also likely be treated to Hawaiian specialties like local pineapple.

Just do it!! Amazing adventure! Captain Curtis, Jackie and Peter show you one of the best days you can have packed with core memory building moments. They were friendly, knowledgeable, entertaining, enthusiastic and kept us safe. You won’t regret the full day Buck Island Snorkel/BBQ trip!!! Be sure to get there early and make reservations in advance.

The crew was amazing! Tour is a MUST DO! Snorkling the reef was beautiful with the crew in the water with you in case you needed assistance, Delicious lunch after Snorkling. Had an amazing time! Thank you, see ya next time!

BIG BEARD'S IS GREAT! Captain Curtis, Sidney and Peter were terrific. One of the members of our party was a "reluctant snorkeler" and she had a blast! Our friend rose above her fears (Thanks again, Sidney) and it was an amazing day. Even if you have a "reluctant snorkeler" in your group... Encourage them to ride along. Chances are they'll be glad you did!

100% incredible snorkeling trip to Buck Island, St Croix! The boat was great and the women running the boat were absolutely the best, not to mention very friendly and helpful! I totally recommend Big Beard’s Adventures! Great shop at the pier, too!

We did a sunset cruise with Big Beards. They were truly wonderful. They made it such a memorable trip. It was a beautiful relaxing evening filled with gorgeous sunset photos the crew helped us get some great family ones we’ll have for a lifetime! We highly recommend this cruise and this team! We will be going again!!

Whenever we have friends and/or family in town we always try to do a sunset sail. This trip was special as we had 3 generations on board. Captain Gabe and Mate Tristan made everyone comfortable and along with a gorgeous sunset kept everyone entertained with music, tunes on the conch shell and good island punch. The sails were up as we quietly swept over the water. We look forward to our next sunset sail. Thanks.

Additional route details and approximate times for whistlestops will be shared closer to the tour.

During the tour, the Union Pacific Museum will host a special passenger trip. The unique experience is the annual gala fundraiser for the nonprofit organization and provides a rare opportunity to travel on this historic heritage equipment. More information on the specifics will appear at www.UPtrainTix.org when they become available.

2024 Westward Bound Tour Route

This is one of two public tours planned for Big Boy in 2024, with a second tour planned later this fall with stops in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, and Illinois, among other states. Details of the second tour will be released later this spring.

The month-long "Westward Bound" tour will honor Union Pacific's rich railroad legacy and celebrate the railroad's employees and communities it serves. For part of its journey, the Big Boy's consist will include an assortment of rail cars giving spectators a glimpse into what the locomotive looked like pulling freight in its heyday.

"The Big Boy locomotive symbolizes the pivotal role railroads played in shaping our nation's history, and the technological advances we have witnessed within our industry," said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. "We are thrilled to share this living piece of history with our employees and the public, and we love seeing the enthusiasm this locomotive generates wherever its whistle blows."

Last fall, we had anticipated including Boise, Idaho, and Portland, Oregon on the Westward Bound tour. As planning continued, we determined that the network capacity on our northern corridor could not accommodate Big Boy No. 4014 along with anticipated demand on a single track. Our goal is to share the Big Boy with as many rail fans as possible across our network, and we look forward to seeing everyone track side – 25 feet back this summer and fall.

Big Bend Canoe, Raft, Kayak, … Type of watercraft used is dependent on river level, large rafts are only available on higher levels, generally late summer or early fall. Canoes and kayaks and even the Beast (stand up paddle board) are all available depending on water conditions and skills.

Food Lunches can be provided at modest cost or clients can bring their own lunches, anyone with a special diet is advised to bring their own food, as our grocers have limited food variety. On multi-day trips, outdoor cooking is on the menu.

A very special canoe or kayak trip is the Devils River . Just beautiful.

Charlie: I hope you are well. Just wanted to let you know that Emily and I had a great time. We appreciate the hard work that your guides put in throughout the trip. We have recommended you to others already. I’ve put up a review on Trip Advisor and completed the TPWD survey. We look forward to travelling with you again in the future. Also, what was the name of the children’s book you told us about? It sounded like a great book for our grandkids.

Thanks, David

Charlie and crew, Our Devils River trip exceeded our expectations and left us wanting to do it again. Despite the wide range of our group’s ages, from 11 to 72; and despite the differences in our kayaking expertise, from novice to pretty decent … you all were able to tailor the adventure accordingly for all of us. The adventurers got their share of fun, the novices had a very safe and enjoyable time. The surprise storm and fast rising river was an event that really showed how attuned you are to the potential dangers of the river, and how to mitigate quickly and appropriately. It was great to have you make all the necessary arrangements ahead of time, from the dependable shuttle to the three camping spots. We all appreciated the well prepared and abundant food, and never had a worry during the entire trip.

You and your crew were top notch, and you allowed us to have a fabulous time.

Thanks Michelle Rumbaut, Steve White, Clint Taylor, John Sieben, and the rest of the gang …

Canoeing in Big Bend April 29, 2019

Angell Expeditions was the perfect selection for us. We originally booked a raft trip, but it was changed to canoes as the water level dropped and couldn’t accommodate a raft. Charlie was responsive, especially with the lack of phone service in this remote part of the country. An AMAZING guide. He was patient with my parents (who are around 80 years old), super helpful, and made for a most memorable experience on the Rio Grande. It was totally worth paying more to be on a private tour. Definitely recommend and would do it again!!

Charlie and Kat were fun and funny and awesome. They know their flora and fauna here. The river tour was relaxing. We did the rafting with 6 people from 11:30 to about 2:30. We did canyon walk for 20 min. It was perfect nature as we did a little art in Marfa. It is far. At least two hours from Marfa.

Five  spectacular river canyons in Big Bend offer incredible opportunities to kayak, canoe or raft the Rio Grande. The river is not difficult for beginning and intermediate paddlers at normal river flows, and some sections are ideal for novices. Bring your own gear, rent equipment from local outfitters, or take a fully equipped guided trip from two hours to ten days.

Professionally guided trips have an excellent record for safety and guest comfort and offer a wide variety of options to suit the first timer as well as the experienced river traveler.

Most outfitters   provide equipment rental and transportation for folks who want to do it on their own. Before undertaking any trip without a guide, be aware that you may be responsible for the full cost of damaged or lost rented equipment and the cost of any required rescue service.

10 Stunning Vistas on a Big Sur Road Trip in California

B ig Sur, California is located along Pacific Coast Highway . A Big Sur road trip encompasses 90 miles of coastal beauty from Carmel-by-the-Sea in the North to San Simeon (Hearst Castle) in the South.

The Pacific Coast Highway hugs the entire coast of California, and specifically runs along the length of Big Sur with the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains on the inland side and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

To reach Big Sur you will need to drive about 150 miles south of San Francisco or 300 miles north of Los Angeles.

The area was originally named El Sur Grande, or The Big South , but was shortened and popularized to Big Sur.

Super Picturesque Stops on a Big Sur Road Trip

As an affiliate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This page may contain affiliate links. I would love your support through clicking on the links. Read the full  disclosure  here.

If this is your first visit on a Big Sur road trip, you may be simply astounded by the super picturesque stops during the day and the stunning sunset view in the evening.

Be prepared to make lots of stops.

There are plenty of pull-outs all along the way. Use caution when driving South to North along the highway as you will cross the center line to access the pull-outs.

Enjoy Your Big Sur Road Trip with a GuideAlong Audio Tour

The day we spent exploring the Central California Coast with the GuideAlong Audio Guided Tours was all about making stops along the way . The tour for us began in Carmel and spanned all along the coastline toward San Simeon.

If you were to drive the entirety of the Pacific Coast Highway in California, it would take you between ten to twelve hours without stops. We spent an entire day driving a much shorter distance and making stops and still didn't make it all the way to San Luis Obispo from Carmel to complete the GuideAlong tour.

Bonus * We still have lots more to see next time.

That's the beauty of the GuideAlong Audio Tours narrated by Dave Pettitt . Once you make a purchase, that specific tour is yours for good. You can do the whole tour again, pick up where you left off, or start from the opposite end for MORE sensational views and information.

Discover the best of Carmel-by-the-Sea to San Luis Obispo with the GuideAlong Audio Tour of Big Sur, PCH Hwy 1 . Pretty sure you'll agree that the drive will be stunning and takes advantage of the super picturesque stops in Big Sur.

Download the App

Begin by downloading the GuideAlong App and then selecting the audio tour for the destination of your choice— Big Sur, PCH Hwy 1 . These guides are super affordable and can also be purchased as bundles for extra discounts.

As you drive along, the GPS signal determines your location and when you pass a pre-determined point, the commentary from the app plays pre-recorded content automatically.

Start Driving

You don’t have to do anything to start the commentary.

Your audio tour guide will suggest side trips to take, often cracks corny jokes, gives a history lesson of the area, shares insight on significant historical figures from years gone by, and presents behind-the-scenes stories to enhance your visit.

Often locals know of little-known tips and locations to visit, especially for the most picturesque stops in Big Sur. GuideAlong shares them with you too.

You can travel at your own pace, choose to skip a side route, spend a little longer at a scenic overlook, or return to a highlight on the route that sparked your interest.

Bring along your magnetic air vent phone mount for easy viewing of your cell phone screen.

10 Stunning Vista on a Big Sur Road Trip

1. pull-out next to a field of cows.

As you begin your Big Sur road trip, you'll love the twisting road that curves dramatically around cliffs. Take time to stop at the stunning vistas and pullouts all along the way.

One of the benefits of traveling with the GuideAlong Audio Tours is being able to stop anywhere on your route. Before reaching our first "highlighted" stop on the tour at Bixby Bridge, we passed a beautiful field scattered with cows grazing right next to the ocean. Happy cows.

It was idyllic.

In fact, the conversation in our car included this comment, "If I couldn't be a happy cow in Switzerland , I would want to be one right here!"

2. Bixby Bridge

The Bixby Bridge spot is so popular that cars begin to slow and prepare to pull over long before reaching the bridge. The famous Big Sur bridge, Bixby Bridge , is one sight you won't want to miss whether you stop at the first pull-out and capture views there or cross over to the inland side of the highway to park.

It might even be one of the most Instagrammed stops along the Big Sur drive. We visited the Bixby Bridge early in the day, but can you just imagine the sunset view in the evening?

It is truly a must-see attraction for photographers and sightseers alike.

3. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

What is the attraction for stopping at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park? How about:

  • One of the best places to hike in Big Sur
  • Pfeiffer Falls
  • Campgrounds
  • Ice cream at the Visitor Center
  • Big Sur Redwoods
  • Hiking trails through a variety of trees in the forest: oaks, conifers, sycamores, willows
  • Open meadows

You will need to purchase a State Park Pass to visit the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

One of the best places to hike in Big Sur takes you to Pfeiffer Falls and then branches off to Valley View Trail. While both hikes have some elevation, both are relatively easy hikes.

4. Pfeiffer Beach

While Pfeiffer Beach is considered one of the must-see stops along the Pacific Coast Highway on the GuideAlong tour due to its beautiful beach, dramatic rocks, and Pfeiffer Beach purple sand, I will give a little caution here: IT IS SUPER DUPER WINDY!

Maybe there are days when the sea and wind are less restless, but it wasn't the case on the day we visited. In fact, if you ever want to know what it feels like to be sandblasted, this beach will give you that feeling.

You will need to pay a separate entrance fee to access the beach and follow an 8-mile road to reach the parking lot. There are restroom facilities here.

5. Nepenthe Cafe for Daytime and Evening Sunset View

Stopping along Big Sur at Nepenthe Cafe is a popular destination as a lunch spot as well as one of the recommended Big Sur viewpoints.

You may need to have a little patience finding a parking spot in the Nepenthe Cafe parking lot around lunch time, especially if you are simply stopping to take in the scenery.

There are two levels with a take out cafe on the lower level and a sit-down restaurant above. If you have the time, stay for lunch (or dinner) and enjoy the views!

6. Sand Dollar Beach

Chris and I were happy to explore Sand Dollar Beach while our girls stayed in the van to nap.

If you want to find a beach that is beautiful, not so windy, and might just have some treasures, Sand Dollar Beach is the perfect spot.

In fact, the audio tour suggested that if you happened to find a piece of jade in the nearby Jade Cove, you are allowed to keep any piece that you can carry out. We didn't find any.

Nor did we find any sand dollars—but not for the lack of looking. I am a bit of a beachcomber at heart.

And if your husband suggests that you remove your shoes and walk through the shallow water instead of across the rocky section of beach, be mindful that he might make it through the shallow section without getting wet. You (or me) on the other hand will be drenched by two or three rogue waves.

7. Elephant Seal Beach

At this point in our day, we still had a long way to go to complete the GuideAlong audio tour. We didn’t think we would make it all the way to San Luis Obispo, but Chris wanted to continue on to the Hearst Castle visitor center and grounds.

Before we reached the castle, we stopped at Elephant Seal overlook and watched the seals on the beach.

They were still having mid afternoon naps, so while there were some noisy seals in the bunch, there wasn’t a whole lot of movement. Maybe the seals aren't so picturesque but they can be fun to watch.

8. Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle was approximately 45 minutes from Sand Dollar Beach and one of our last planned stops for the day. However, we arrived to find that the Castle tours and the Hearst Castle Visitor Center were closed due to emergency road repairs from significant storm damage.

We should have checked first.

Be sure to check first before you go. Especially since advanced reservations will be required when it reopens if you want to visit either the Hearst Castle or the Visitor Center.

So we turned around and started the two to three hour drive back to Carmel. You'll hear the GuideAlong Audio Tour again on your return trip. It's perfect if you missed anything on the first part of your trip.

9. Sunset Overlooking the Ocean

Just before reaching the Bixby Bridge on our return Big Sur road trip , we had a fabulous view of the setting sun.

Chris pulled over at a pull-out overlooking the ocean, and we watched the sun go down. A perfect ending to an amazing day stunning Big Sur viewpoints.

10. Places to Eat Along Pacific Coast Highway 1

I recommend bringing plenty of snacks, drinks, and a picnic lunch. We packed up our handy folding cooler with leftover pizza slices, apples, carrot sticks, and treats for the day.

If you need a snack along the way, consider Built Bar protein bars in your favorite flavor. I like chocolate. Chris likes anything with caramel.

There weren’t too many places to stop for dinner along the way back from Hearst Castle, so when we reached Gorda, we decided to stop and eat at Whale Watcher's Cafe.

They definitely know how to capitalize on their market and the lack of places to stop in this section of PCH. $150 later we had filled our empty spots.

From Gorda we still had a two-hour drive back to our vacation rental.

Get Your Camera Ready for ALL of the Picturesque Stops in Big Sur

Be sure to have your camera ready to make some stops. Seriously, when you have two photographers along for the ride as we did, you'll hear, "Pull over!" quite often.

Whatever your skill level with a camera, be prepared for some amazing photos as you drive Big Sur, stop at the Big Sur Redwoods, and discover the best places to hike in Big Sur.

Here are a few camera suggestions if you are wondering which one to choose for your skill level:

Canon Powershot G1  – This camera is great if you are comfortable leaving the camera in AUTO mode and work well with a point and shoot. It gives you options for some manual photos if you want to begin expanding your skills.

Canon T8i  – If you are a beginner with your photography skills and want to switch back and forth between Auto, Aperture Priority, or Manual Mode, this is a great entry level DSLR.

Canon 6d Mark II  – This is a great camera for advanced photographers who are comfortable with shooting in Manual Mode. You’ll get some outstanding shots with this DSLR.

Smart Phone  – Cameras on your phone nowadays are amazing. If this is your picture-taking device, you will surely capture some amazing images. I usually “tourist” with my DSLR around my neck and my Smart Phone in hand! And yes, I probably don’t “ blend in ” that well.

You may even wish to begin early in the morning for the best photo opportunities and to give yourself plenty of time for an all-day Big Sur Road Trip adventure making stops along the Pacific Coast Highway.

Believe me, you will need at least one day, two at best to discover everything along the way.

Whatever you choose as your camera as you discover Big Sur, you will want to have the battery charged and ready to go for the day (maybe bring a backup battery just in case).

A first-timer's guide to Saskatoon, Canada

James March

Apr 26, 2024 • 6 min read

big trip tour

From timing your visit right to planning your activities, here's our first-timer's guide to Saskatoon © K. D. Kirchmeier / Getty Images

Surrounded by gentle wheat fields beneath a dome of great prairie skies, Saskatoon is the largest city in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan .

Straddling the South Saskatchewan River, it has been the province’s cultural and economic hub since its settlement in the late 19th century (but not its capital – that falls to Regina).

The Northern Plains Indigenous Peoples had been guardians of this land for over 6000 years when, in 1883, white Methodists founded the town as a temperance colony, naming it after the purple berry growing in the region. While the railroad eventually reached the fledgling town in 1890, Saskatoon still only had 113 inhabitants at the turn of the century. A boom period of new settlers and entrepreneurs soon followed, and Saskatoon grew into a thriving city, albeit isolated from big cities like Vancouver , Toronto and Montréal .

Today, the sometimes stark prairie landscapes around the city look like nowhere else in the country. Downtown, you’ll find street art tours, compelling museums, craft beer breweries, a variety of architecture and some fine riverside trails. And Saskatoon now proudly explains and celebrates the Indigenous Peoples who have been here for thousands of years, with the Wanuskewen complex a majestic and poignant monument to that past and present.

These top tips can help you plan a trip to Saskatoon.

The night sky glows behind some riverside buildings following sunset

When should I go to Saskatoon?

Though Saskatoon – one of the sunniest cities in Canada  – receives plenty of sunlight (2350.4 hours annually), winters are long and cold so plan to visit during the glorious summer months between June and August. This is the busiest time of year, but since Saskatoon is a little more under-the-radar than other Canadian cities, it’s not overwhelmed by tourists and offers much better value for money regarding accommodation and eating out.

The city comes alive with music on those effulgent summer days with magnificent festivals across multiple genres including the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival , Rock the River and the Ness Creek Music Festival . And for those who do want to embrace Saskatchewan winter scenes, the Nutrien Wintershines Festival hosts ice sculptures, cook-offs, stargazing and more.

How long should I spend in Saskatoon?

Allow two to three days to explore Saskatoon, but also leave time for attractions on the city’s outskirts that make use of the abundant prairie space. You’ll spend the majority of your time in downtown Saskatoon, on the river trails and the Broadway neighborhood, which is ideal for a weekend. More planning is needed for the excursions out of the city, so map out an extra day or two for those depending on time and budget.

Is it easy to get in and around Saskatoon?

Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport is 7km (4 miles) northwest of downtown Saskatoon, which is about 18 minutes by taxi, the most convenient form of travel to any downtown hotel. The number 11 bus also runs from the airport, and takes around 30 minutes to make the same journey (without factoring in walking to the hotel).

Though its streets are wide, Saskatoon’s downtown core is highly walkable and there are several bridges spanning the South Saskatchewan River that link to Broadway Ave’s bars, cafes and stores. Consider hiring a bike too, as the relatively flat landscape and serpentine river trails are ideal for cycling. Visitors to Wanuskewen will need to hire a car or take a taxi.

Traveling elsewhere in Canada? Here are our top tips on transportation

A flat path alongside a river

6 of the best things to do in Saskatoon

1. explore the meewasin valley trail.

Saskatoon’s huge prairie skies are evocative and entice you outside, so the best way to experience the great outdoors here is by following some of the Meewasin Valley Trail . Flanking the serpentine river, the 25km (15 mile) trails are a fine introduction to Saskatoon’s cityscape, and are best experienced on two wheels (look out for the motivational chalk murals and messages along the way).

2. See artworks in the Remai Modern

The river winds south to River Landing in downtown’s southern tip, and it’s here that the Tetris-like Remai Modern  museum rises up on a small bluff. Alongside a permanent collection featuring over 8000 works from Canadian and international artists, there’s also a quirky permanent exhibition of ceramics and linocuts by Pablo Picasso in this spacious museum bursting with natural light.

3. Enjoy the buss of Broadway Avenue

A short walk across the Broadway Bridge brings cinematic city views followed by a stroll into arguably the most vibrant corner of Saskatoon. Airy breweries , buzzing bistros, kitsch vinyl stores and the iconic Broadway Theatre fringe Broadway Ave, which is a fine spot to spend a morning, afternoon or evening (perhaps even all three?).

4. Take yourself on a tour of downtown's murals and architecture

Back in downtown, discover an art-splashed city on a self-guided street art tour passing by huge murals and multicolored installations spanning 20th and 23rd Street East. Even if you’re not staying there, the Delta Bessborough Hotel is something of a work of art itself. Completed in 1935, the Bessborough is a soaring Châteauesque turreted and gabled affair reminiscent of Bavarian castles that looks startlingly out of place.

5. See how Saskatoon was

Towards the edge of the city, the Western Development Museum’s compelling Boomtown exhibit is an indoor reconstruction of a typical Saskatchewan small-town main street from 1910, complete with a blacksmith, church and train station.

6. Taste local produce at the farmers market

And for a true experience of this land, it’s worth a visit to the Saskatoon Farmers Market  – an institution running since 1975 and stuffed with vendors selling everything from wild berries to handmade moccasins.

A large building set in a bucolic landscape with a goose strolling in the foreground

My favorite thing to do in Saskatoon

There’s a magical quality to watching the sun sink behind the widescreen horizon at Wanuskewin Heritage Park . Not like the picture-postcard sunsets you see on Caribbean beaches, it’s more of a calming, spiritual feeling as the sun’s soft glow fades across the marshy creeks and wooded ridges of the Opamihaw Valley. Shortly after, I watched the moon rise against a blue evening canvas. Known as nēhiyawēwin in Plains Cree, Wanuskewin roughly translates to "seeking peace of mind" and that name couldn’t be more apt.

Around 20 minutes north of downtown Saskatoon, Wanuskewin tells the story of the Northern Plains Indigenous People’s spiritual relationship to this land and the living creatures they share it with, most notably the repopulated bison. You can explore panels, artwork, interactive classes, traditional food and much more, but most importantly that story – which is never sugarcoated – is told by Indigenous People themselves. Few experiences I’ve had in North America have felt deeper and more enlightening than this one.

How much money do I need for Saskatoon?

  • Hostel room: $79
  • Hotel room for two: $94
  • Public transport ticket: $3
  • Coffee: $3.60
  • Sandwich: $3
  • Dinner for two: $73
  • Beer/pint at a bar: $5.80

A riverside city in winter with snow covering the roads and bridges

Should I visit in winter?

With an average temperature of -13°C (8°F) in January, winter in Saskatoon is only for the hardiest of souls. However, one bonus of a visit in this season – along with budget-friendly prices – is the chance of seeing the northern lights, with the aurora's stunning swirls sometimes visible if the stars align (no pun intended). Just remember to pack plenty of layers.

What language is spoken in Saskatoon?

Though English and French are official languages in Saskatchewan, English is by far the most spoken language in Saskatoon and you’ll need it for all of your interactions.

Nude cruise to set sail from Florida next year: Here are the starting costs, itinerary

big trip tour

The "Big Nude Boat" cruise, which allows passengers to bare all − yes, even at the buffet − is set to sail from Florida next year.

The "11-day adventure" to the Caribbean is set for the first two weeks of February on the Norwegian Pearl, according to the Bare Necessities Tour & Travel website.

"Bare Necessities’ newest nude cruise is a private island double-dip with a brand new travel partner!" the company wrote on its website.

The trip which embarks from Miami, includes "an exclusive visit to an idyllic private island" in The Bahamas as well a another exclusive stop on the way back to the Port of Miami.

"Two opportunities to enjoy a new slice of Bare-adise, coupled with a beautiful selection of Eastern Caribbean island stops, will make this a can’t miss Big Nude Boat experience," the travel company posted.

Why cruises are popular with swingers: 'What happens on the ship ... stays on the ship'

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

Big Nude Boat cruise sailing dates and destinations:

The ship departs from the Port of Miami on Feb. 3 and returns to the same port on Feb. 14.

The itinerary includes stops at the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Dominica, Martinique and St. Lucia.

How much does the Big Nude Boat cruise cost?

Rates for an inside cabin start at $2,000 per person.

They stretch as high as $33,155 for the top room on the ship: a Haven three-bedroom garden villa.

Laws of the land (and sea)

Guests are encouraged to park their bare behinds on towels provided on board in areas including the pool deck and the buffet area, according to the website.

"Passengers can easily follow our rule on nudist etiquette by always placing a towel down before sitting," it reads. "Remember to pack a swimsuit; not all excursions are clothing optional."

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Will Travel to Nigeria to Support the Invictus Games

By Erin Vanderhoof

Image may contain Prince Harry Duke of Sussex Meghan Duchess of Sussex Meghan Duchess of Sussex and Accessories

In May, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will embark on some major travel in support of the Invictus Games, the biennial sporting event for wounded veterans that Harry helped to found in 2014. On Monday, the Invictus Games Foundation announced that Harry will head to the UK to attend a service of thanksgiving in honor of the organization’s 10th anniversary at St Paul’s Cathedral. Later in May, Meghan will join him for a trip to Nigeria by request of the country’s government. The trip will be the couple’s first official international tour since leaving their royal roles in 2020.

On May 8, the Invictus Games ceremony will be led by St Paul’s dean, the Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, and actor Damian Lewis will read the Invictus poem, which gave the games their name. According to the Daily Mail , Harry is likely to stay in a hotel, as he has on his last few visits to the country. During previous visits to the UK, his wife and children, Lili and Archie, have not joined due to his ongoing concern over his security arrangements in the country.

Later in the month, Harry and Meghan will travel to Nigeria to meet with service members and participate in other cultural activities. In a statement, the country’s acting director of defense information, Tukur Gusau, explained the purpose of the couple’s trip. “The Defense Headquarters has expressed its honor and delight for the acceptance of the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, and his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan, to visit Nigerian in May 2024,” it read . “The visit is to consolidate Nigeria's strong hold at the game and the possibility of hosting the event in later years.”

Nigeria sent its first delegation of wounded veterans to last year’s Games in Düsseldorf , and competitors for the country came home with a gold medal in powerlifting and a bronze in table tennis. During the games, they were joined by the country’s defense minister, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badaru. According to Gusau, the minister expressed that he would be interested in hosting a future edition of the Games in the country.

In Harry’s comments during the opening ceremony, he referenced the new additions, adding he thought his wife would support Nigeria during the games. “Now, I'm not saying we play favorites in our home,” he said . “But since my wife discovered that she's of Nigerian descent, it's likely to get a little bit competitive this year.” In a 2022 episode of her podcast Archetypes, Meghan told Nigerian-American comedian Ziwe Fumudoh that a DNA test had revealed that she was 43% Nigerian.

The 2025 Invictus Games are set to take place in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada next February and will feature the addition of winter sports for the first time. Earlier this year , Meghan and Harry traveled to the region to visit with competitors preparing for next year’s games at a training camp.

Emma Hayes and Jürgen Klopp

Emma Hayes’ long goodbye and the farewell tour narrative

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now!

EARLY (REVOLVING) DOORS

A little over a month ago the Chelsea women’s team were still in contention for a quadruple, but now the odds are massively stacked against them winning any shiny pots at all. It is a scenario that seemed utterly unthinkable when their charismatic manager announced in November she’d be taking herself through the door marked “Do One” come season’s end, but on Wednesday night even Emma Hayes conceded it is one that is almost certain to come to pass . No stranger to adversity on and off the field, Hayes has suffered a series of setbacks since it was revealed she was off to take charge of USA USA USA. Always fond of an eff and a jeff on the touchline, blue has been the colour of the air over assorted technical areas in which she has stood watching her team get knocked out of three different cup competitions and all but relinquish their stranglehold on the Women’s Super League title, capped by losing a seven-goal thriller at Liverpool. With the finishing line very much in sight, the WSL title – like its men’s equivalent – is now Manchester City’s to lose.

Despite being almost universally popular because she’s generally brilliant and seems like she’d be mighty good company on a night out, Hayes has come in for quite a lot of largely unprecedented criticism this year. A gaffe here and an uncharacteristically ungracious snipe there haven’t helped, while her team’s downturn in performances have inevitably led to suggestions that the manager and/or her players might have mentally checked out as soon as it became known that this season at Chelsea would be her last. And while we can never know for certain whether or not her long goodbye has had a detrimental effect on attitude or performance, the most plausible explanation for her team’s lack of success actually seems far more mundane.

Losing one of the world’s best players in Sam Kerr and her back-up striker Mia Fishel to serious knee-knack in quick succession was always likely to have an adverse effect on Chelsea’s season after the turn of the year, while the absence through “ouch” of Mayra Ramírez for their Big Cup semi-final second leg defeat against Barcelona was about as helpful to the collective cause as the two extremely questionable and match-changing refereeing decisions that went against them at Stamford Bridge.

On Wednesday night at Prenton Park, Chelsea played like a team down to their bare bones who had just come off the back of consecutive games of mentally and physically exhausting football against arguably the best team that has played the game. If proof of fatigue was needed, after half an hour against Liverpool, Chelsea’s players had visibly wilted and went on to concede three goals from corners in 41 minutes – the same amount they’d shipped from set-pieces in their previous 18 WSL games. One suspects that while he lurches towards the latest leg of his own possibly ill-advised farewell tour , Jürgen Klopp may well order a few gallons of whatever the Liverpool team were drinking for his own misfiring players before their appointment with Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur, Mate this weekend.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“You know what, that is a fair point because I haven’t had too much to eat. I’ve had a cheeseburger at about half two. It might explain why I am slurring my words. I’ve had about eight pints in the Yellow Wall. I’ve got a new family, a family of friends, we all look after each other, I gave them a few bob after half-time” – when asked by CBS Sports colleague Kate Abdo whether he was in a decent enough condition to conduct an interview with Jadon Sancho after Dortmund’s 1-0 Big Cup win over PSG , Jamie Carragher explains he had been partaking in the local speciality, Das Tin.

FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS

As an Ipswich fan of 50 years, the key achievement of the last two seasons is not breaking numerous goalscoring and points records, gaining one – and potentially two – promotions back to back on a meagre budget (by Championship standards) or playing swashbuckling football, but an article in Football Daily . Truly, this is the Promised Land” – Richard Bradshaw.
Nearly choked on my cuppa when yesterday’s Football Daily waffled on about Ipswich and talk of reaching the Premier League with back-to-back promotions. Big Website and the Daily never miss a chance to remind us of the fact football existed before the Premier League arrived and liberalised yet another national institution. But here you were making a few comparisons since the coming of the PL. What a load of cobblers. Northampton Town did it as well on their way to the old Division One, completing a round trip from the fourth tier and back in nine years” – Dave Gibson.
Re: yesterday’s Memory Lane, full email edition. Garry Birtles is far from the only European Cup-winning player to see their career stall at Manchester United. He just happened to be 40 years ahead of his time” – Ed Taylor.
