As a beauty editor and very sweaty individual, I’ve personally tried dozens of different deodorants over the years. Some weren’t strong enough and led to embarrassing sweat stains, while others stained my clothes. But your search for the right deodorant doesn’t have to be beset with all that trial and error. To find out what products are most effective at controlling sweat and odor, I reached out to five dermatologists , two personal trainers , and three men’s grooming experts to get their top recommendations.

Since choosing a deodorant is a personal decision, and everyone has different body chemistry, it’s hard to proclaim one specific deodorant the “best overall.” So I broke everything down by what it is (stick, roll-on, wipe) and what the experts say it’s best for (whether that’s masking scents, stopping sweat, or both), noting which options come recommended for the heaviest sweaters among us. I also reached out to our staffers and contributors to get their recommendations for the best deodorants and anti-perspirants for daily use and for workouts.

What we’re looking for

Anti-perspirant or deodorant.

While you might see the terms “deodorant” and “anti-perspirant” used interchangeably on product labels, there’s a difference between the two: Deodorants make you smell good, and anti-perspirants stop you from sweating. “Deodorants technically only mask or neutralize the body odor caused by bacteria, whereas an anti-perspirant temporarily suppresses the flow of sweat,” says Dr. Jennifer Chwalek of Union Square Laser Dermato­logy. As she explains, the metallic salts in anti-perspirants — typically aluminum compounds — “create a plug in the sweat duct reducing the flow of sweat.” For those reasons, Dr. Jeremy Fenton of the Schweiger Dermatology Group and Dr. Samer Jaber of Washington Square Dermatology agree that the gold standard for sweat and odor protection is a combination anti-perspirant deodorant.

Another quick point of clarification: You’ve probably heard a lot about “aluminum-free” deodorant or “natural” deodorant. The two terms essentially mean the same thing, says Jaber. “Natural deodorants are aluminum-free products,” he explains. “Aluminum salts are the only FDA-approved chemical anti-perspirant.” Aluminum can be irritating to sensitive skin, so if you’re prone to rashes or itchiness, you might want to opt for a deodorant-only product that kills odor-causing bacteria. Fenton says to look for ingredients like “zinc, witch hazel, or essential oils that have anti-bacterial properties, such as lemongrass, sage, and tea tree, or baking soda, which neutralizes odor.” And Dr. Corey Hartman of Skin Wellness Dermatology adds that people with melanated skin especially should consider an aluminum-free product, because when melanin is irritated by aluminum, it can result in visible skin marks that can take days or weeks to go away.

Deodorants come in wipes, roll-ons, powders, sprays, and creams. We’ve noted which types are which below.

Best anti-perspirants for men

Best roll-on anti-perspirant for heavy sweaters.

Protection type: Anti-perspirant | Application type: Roll-on

For excessive sweating, Certain Dri is a prescription-strength roll-on that has to be applied at night. This allows the aluminum to really settle in the sweat glands, which is harder to do during the day when you’re actively producing sweat. Because it’s so strong, you should work it into your routine slowly — every other night at first — to avoid irritation. “There’s a cumulative effect as it settles into the pores,” Fenton notes, so using it every 48 to 72 hours may be all you need.

Best anti-perspirant wipes for heavy sweaters

Protection type: Anti-perspirant | Application type: Wipes

If you want something equally powerful that requires even less frequent usage, try these anti-perspirant wipes. Endorsed by the International Hyperhidrosis Society, one SweatBlock wipe can be effective for up to seven days. Like Certain Dri, SweatBlock is supposed to be applied at night. I’ve used these consistently for six years and they’re my holy grail in my battle against heavy sweating. But if leaving the house in the morning without applying anything feels strange to you, Fenton says you can use a non-anti-perspirant deodorant in the morning for added odor protection. Strategist contributor Carlo Dellaverson , a self-proclaimed “card-carrying member of the excessive-sweating community ,” says SweatBlock wipes “have taken on a sort of cult status among excessive sweaters, for when nothing else works.”

Best anti-perspirant face wipes for heavy sweaters

If you’re a face sweater, I can’t recommend SweatBlock’s face wipes enough. They’re formulated with a gentler aluminum chlorohydrate, along with soothing witch hazel and vitamin E. Like the SweatBlock wipes above, you can apply them at night or 30 minutes before applying morning skin care, though I personally prefer to do it at night so I wake up nice and dry. And if you’re worried about a breakout, I’m pleased to report that after months of weekly application, my skin has never looked better.

Best anti-perspirant deodorants for men

Dove’s Men+Care line is a favorite of my brothers (and is also one I’ve reached for as my daily deodorant of choice in the past). Personal trainer Andrew Flores — who “likes to sweat” while working out — is another fan of Dove’s anti-perspirant deodorants. He says they’re stronger than the Right Guard anti-perspirants he used to use, which would never last him a full gym session. This particular stick smells great (“like laundry”) even after a heavy workout, according to Flores, who adds that it leaves no marks and causes him no irritation. He also appreciates its value, noting that a four-pack breaks down to just $3.50 per stick.

Best anti-perspirant deodorant for heavy sweaters with sensitive skin

If you have particularly sensitive skin but still need a strong antiperspirant, Vanicream has a high concentration of aluminum to prevent sweating, but it’s free of all fragrances, dyes, lanolin, parabens, and pretty much any other potentially irritating ingredients. “If someone has eczema or contact dermatitis, I recommend this,” says Hartman.

Best anti-perspirant deodorant for moderate sweaters

For guys who don’t need the most powerful anti-perspirant or who find it irritating to their skin, Fenton says Mitchum is “one step down” in intensity from the strongest stuff and very effective for controlling wetness and odor.

Best anti-perspirant deodorant for moderate sweaters with sensitive skin

Unscented products are generally the best for sensitive skin, since chemical fragrances and even essential oils can be irritating for some people. For those folks, a fragrance-free Dove stick is a good bet, because it is also alcohol-free and contains moisturizing ingredients. This stick is also one of our top-recommended deodorants for women . (Four experts told us the active ingredient in Dove, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex, is less irritating on the skin than some of the harsher chemicals in other deodorants.) Dove’s line for men currently lacks an unscented anti-perspirant deodorant, but those who would prefer something from that line can find a lightly scented one above on this list.

Best roll-on anti-perspirant deodorant for moderate sweaters with sensitive skin

Protection type: Anti-perspirant deodorant | Application type: Roll-on

Ban is another brand known for making gentle products. Its fragrance-free roll-on deodorant comes recommended by celebrity groomer Ronnie Peterson , who says he has been using it for the past eight years. Unlike the traditional stick deodorants above, the roller ball dispenses a thin layer of clear liquid with each application, so the product should absorb quickly without leaving any white residue behind.

Best anti-perspirant deodorant for dry skin

People with chronic dryness often find that anti-perspirant deodorants dry them out even more. That’s why Hartman recommends this newer option from Old Spice to all of his patients who complain of dry skin. Its formula includes moisturizer and the same less-irritating ingredient (aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex) found in the Dove anti-perspirant deodorant, above. As someone whose skin reacts badly to aluminum, Hartman adds that this is what he uses himself; his son, who has atopic dermatitis, also uses it.

Best natural deodorants for men

Best natural deodorant overall.

Protection type: Natural deodorant | Application type: Stick

In my guide to the best natural deodorants , I crowned Ursa Major’s to be the best overall. While some natural deodorants can have a gritty feel, this one has a smooth, gel-like consistency that glides on the skin like a conventional deodorant. After testing more than a dozen in the past few years, Strategist writer Jeremy Rellosa always recommends this one from Ursa Major first because it smells super fresh and doesn’t stain his clothes. It’s also made with the same mint and eucalyptus that’s in my favorite bar soap (which is also made by Ursa Major), so it pairs well with my overall scent. Chad Beightol told us that, after trying out a bunch of natural deodorants, this eucalyptus-scented stick is the one that works best for him. “I swear by it,” he says. The deodorant contains hops, which, “while great for making beer, is also effective at fighting bacteria and microbes,” he adds.

Best natural deodorant for sensitive skin

Even though these are billed as “natural” deodorants, if you have sensitive skin, you should still opt for a fragrance-free option because the chemicals that may compose their fragrances can be irritating. For those reasons, Strategist tech writer Jordan McMahon and Rellosa both use this aluminum-free deodorant daily. “I wanted something with a light or no smell and something that didn’t feel like it left residue,” he says. “Native’s deodorant doesn’t really have much scent. The smell is there, but it’s not as potent as something from Old Spice or Right Guard.” Former associate editor Louis Cheslaw uses Native’s deodorant, too. According to him, one stick lasts for months, “goes on dry, and is irritation-free.”

Deodorant and anti-perspirants are available worldwide, but the quality of local products varies widely. If you’re planning to pack your deodorant, instead of buy when you land, here are the best options for travel deodorants.

You know when transit stinks , but not only because of the long hours you’re spending en route? A smelly neighbor can can make a long trip feel even longer, and you, as a conscious traveler, want to avoid being that person for those in your midst.

Can You Bring Deodorant On a Plane? & Other Considerations

Tsa deodorant requirements.

Finding TSA-friendly deodorant is key for carry-on only travelers (bravo!).

If you’re planning to stick with stick deodorant for your trip, almost any size can pass through TSA security. Deodorant powders, stones, and crystals are good to go, too.

If your deodorant game is more the liquid variety, you’ll need to make sure your deodorant is packaged in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (clearly marked) and placed in a see-through bag. This is true for spray, liquid, gel, cream, pastes, and roll-on deodorants.

Aluminum-Free (yes, this matters)

I highly recommend packing an aluminum free deodorant for travel. Some deodorant use has been linked to a higher potential for cancer or alzheimer’s; while this has largely been debunked as a myth, aluminum-free deodorant still offers perks like a healthier, more natural sweat and clearer under-arm pores. You can beat odor with natural ingredients—more on this below.

Your Travel Destination

Americans use deodorant more than any other nationality worldwide (although Brazil is a close second). So, as a traveler who strives to be odor-free, where can you maintain your western standards? Where can you fly in and buy deodorant?

Most destinations in Europe and across Oceania are safe for access to deodorant, including brands that you’re probably familiar with. You will have a harder time getting your hands on deodorant brands you recognize in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Of course, you can buy deodorant just about everywhere, but do you really want to use Thai deodorant? Maybe, maybe not.

Keep in mind that you’ll likely pay a higher premium for familiar Western brands in these countries, so it might make more financial sense to stock up now rather than later.

Travel Size vs. Full Size Deodorant

Depending on the length of your travels—or your destination—you might consider stocking up on different deodorant sizes. Travel-sized toiletries have obvious benefits: They take up less space, are lighter-weight, and can give you a headstart in your travel destination. Since you’ll be settling in for a few days or weeks, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to scope out nearby shops or pharmacies to purchase larger toiletries if necessary.

Natural deodorants address these concerns by typically using naturally derived ingredients, like probiotics and essential oils, to address odor and others, like tapioca starch and baking soda, to soak up wetness. (Be advised: some of these ingredients, particularly baking soda, can still cause irritation on your skin.) And just for the record, there is no such thing as a “natural” antiperspirant because to block sweat glands , it must include aluminum—which natural deodorants avoid.

Switching to a natural deodorant could be worthwhile if you’re concerned about what you put on your body affecting your health or have skin reactions to traditional deodorants. What natural deodorant you use and how well it works for you is a matter of personal taste and body chemistry. What to Consider

The biggest thing to note about the ingredients in a natural deodorant is that there should not be any aluminum. While there may be ingredients like arrowroot powder, tapioca starch and more that are meant to help absorb moisture, they won’t actually stop sweat since, according to the FDA, only aluminum salts are approved to stop sweating. Most people who wear natural deodorants don’t want aluminum (that’s kind of the point), so if you pick up a box and it lists aluminum as an ingredient, it’s not a natural deodorant.

Many natural deodorants will also contain baking soda (sometimes listed as sodium bicarbonate) to help curb odor and soak up some moisture. It’s common to have an adverse reaction to baking soda (if you’ve ever gotten a red itchy rash from deodorant, it could be the culprit), so if you have sensitive skin, it’s best to go for a baking soda-free deodorant. You’ll also often see moisturizing ingredients like coconut oil and other plant oils as well as fragrance, either added fragrance or from essential oils.

Naturally, most deodorants use scent to help curb odor. It’s often either from added synthetic fragrance or from natural essential oils and neither is necessarily better than the other. You’ll want to choose a deodorant with a scent that you like, of course, and the strength of the scent is a personal preference. Typically, stronger scents last longer, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the deodorant works better for longer. Many natural deodorants contain additional ingredients to help curb odor even after the scent has worn off. If you have especially sensitive skin, too much scent may cause irritation, so you may want to choose one with a lighter scent or no scent at all.

Keep in mind that you’re probably going to be using deodorant every day, so the size of a deodorant does matter in determining how long it will last. Top 10 Things To Do And See In Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

Located about 400km east of Moscow , Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most important centers of cultural, economic, and political activity in European Russia . Widely considered, after St Petersburg and Moscow, to be Russia’s ‘third city’, Nizhny is fast becoming a hot-spot for Russian and global tourists alike, attracted by the city’s up-and-coming reputation and stunning landscape.

The Kremlin

Jutting out from the cliffs that overlook the meeting point of the great Volga and Oka rivers, Nizhny Novgorod ‘s ancient Kremlin boasts of some of the best views in the city. Designed by an Italian architect, the 13 magnificent towers and the 12 meter high walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin date back to 1500. On this very spot in 1612, heroes of Russian history Kuzma Minin and Count Dmitry Pozharsky defeated the invading Polish army in extraordinary circumstances. This moment has become legend in Russian history and a statue in honor of these two lies at the foot of St Basil’s in Moscow. The Kremlin is the historic center of the city where you will find an art museum and the lovely Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, as well as a striking monument to those that fought in the Second World War and its flame eternally flickering on in their memory.

Ride on the cable car

Completed in 2012, taking a ride on Nizhny Novgorod’s cablecar has fast become a favorite activity of tourists. The trip offers unparalleled opportunities to view the city’s gorgeous natural landscape from this bird’s eye position. The 3660m long gondola lift connects Nizhny to the town of Bor and stretches across the Volga River for 900 panoramic meters. The gondola acts as both a convenient means of transportation and a fantastic sight-seeing expedition – come at sunset for a golden-bathed view of the river and surrounding landscape.

The house-museum of Maxim Gorky

During the Soviet era, Nizhny Novgorod, birthplace of celebrated Russian writer Maxim Gorky , was renamed ‘Gorky’ in honor of this national hero. This home has been preserved in a state as accurate as possible to how it was left by Gorky and is so successful in this that it would seem as though the writer still lived there. The museum ‘s historic interiors and authentic furnishings will transport you back to the 1900s and the creative world of this icon of Russian literature. Come and make the most of this unique experience to delve into the childhood world of this Russian father of social realism. Museum booklets and guided tours are available in English.

Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka

A yarmarka is something akin to a fair, and this historic former market place was restored in 1991, the site now playing home to a superb modern exhibition center. The city’s yarmarka plays host to international events, fairs, and conventions. In 2011, for the 20 year anniversary of the fair’s refounding, a vast array of exhibitions were organized, attended by thousands including members of the British royal family, Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Gorbachev , and Margaret Thatcher . The fair is not only a buzzing center of business and culture, it is also one of the city’s most impressive sights.

The Nizhegorodsky State Art Museum

Located inside Nizhny Novgorod’s ancient Kremlin, the building that houses this art gallery was once the home of the governor of the city. The exhibits are wide-ranging and include everything from 14th century religious icons, to work by 20th century contemporary Russian masters. Particularly dazzling is the collection by Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. There is also a large arts and crafts collection which demonstrates the exquisite handiwork of Russian artisans throughout history.

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street

The chkalov staircase.

An idyllic spot from which to watch the sun’s rays set over the city, this monumental creation was constructed by the Soviet government and is unique to the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The staircase derives its name from pilot Valery Chkalov who, in 1937, became the first man to fly from Moscow to Vancouver through the North Pole. A monument to Chkalov stands at the top of the stairs. The construction of the staircase cost almost 8 million rubles – an immense sum at the time. Over 1,500 stairs connect the city center with the river embankment – making Chkalov’s landmark the longest flight of stairs along the Volga. Nowadays the staircase is a favorite meeting place and relaxation spot for locals.

The Rukavishnikov Estate Museum

The Rukavishnikovs were a family of immensely wealthy merchants originating from the region around Nizhny Novgorod. This superbly restored palace , their former home, has been transformed into a museum of Russian history and gives a realistic snap-shot of life for the wealthy under tsarist rule. The ornate 19th century interiors and exquisite facade are sure to dazzle with their beauty while the lush green of the surrounding natural landscape provides a tranquil getaway from the city center. Lavish furnishings, priceless antiques, and glistening gold will transport you back in time to a world of balls, carriages, banquets, and tsars. Join the world of Russian noble ladies and gentlemen for a day in this stunning palace.

The Sakharov Museum

Nizhny Novgorod’s Sakharov Museum is dedicated to dissident Russian scientist Andrei Sakharov . The nuclear physicist and human rights activist was exiled for six years to the very flat in which the museum is now housed. Sakharov’s support for civil reform and improved human rights in the Soviet Union earned him harsh persecution from the Russian government, but also, in 1975, a Nobel Peace Prize . Sakharov was incarcerated here until 1986 when a KGB officer arrived to install a phone in the flat. Just after the phone was installed it began to ring: the caller was Mikhail Gorbachev, ringing Sakharov to inform him of his release. This phone is now one of the museum’s most treasured artifacts.

The National Centre of Contemporary Art

Inside the walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin can also be found one of the best modern art galleries in Russia. Linked to galleries in both St Petersburg and Moscow, this top-ranking exhibition center houses regularly changing displays of both Russian and international art as well as interactive exhibits and a media library. Progress is also on-going of adding a concert hall, extending the exhibition areas, and creating a restaurant. These additions aim to make art contemporary, not simply a detached, unrelatable concept, but bring it closer to the Russian people.
