Limoncello Tasting Sorrento Italy
When I went to Italy, there was so much to do and see! One of the best experiences I had was Limoncello tasting in Sorrento, Italy. Limoncello is very popular in Italy because of its high-quality lemons. These lemons are not something you can find in your typical grocery store. All around Sorrento and the Amalfi coast, you can see vast amounts of lemon trees!
Lemons thrive in these regions of Italy, and it makes sense to learn about the Italian culture in terms of limoncello. Because of this tour and tasting, I have an addiction to anything Limoncello! I am now super picky about limoncello and will always compare to what I had in Italy. Read on to see what my limoncello tasting in Sorrento, Italy was like!

Sorrento, Italy
Sorrento is a beautiful city on the coast of southwest Italy. Nestled between Naples and The Amalfi Coast, Sorrento has so much beauty to offer. It is definitely more of a touristy area, but I would still recommend you go spend some time there!
When I went to Naples, I actually decided to take a day trip consisting of Naples, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast. As we drove through Sorrento and close to the Amalfi Coast, the views were so gorgeous. The coastal views are breathtaking. I feel like pictures do not do it justice! I loved how you were able to see the sea and the lemon groves on the cliffside.
What is Limoncello
Sorrento and limoncello are usually thought of as a pair. This is because the types of lemons grown in this region are perfect to provide a sweet flavor. Limoncello is a mix of lemons and alcohol. Almalfi lemons are organically grown, much larger than your regular grocery store lemons, and the skin has more oils. These lemons are so sweet that you could actually eat it as is without getting that overwhelming sour taste. Seriously how crazy is that?!
Limoncello is an Italian liqueur. Made with lemons, sugar, and alcohol, this drink is very refreshing! I was told it was a good drink for an after-meal digestif. Many restaurants sI went to had limoncello as a “Chupito” option, not just in Italy, but also in Spain.
*Chupito is the name for an after dinner shot.
Good limoncello is not overly sweet or sour. I would describe it as refreshing and well-balanced between sweet and acidic. It’s super strong, but it is one of those drinks that you wouldn’t feel it until it was too late. I guess that is why they really only give a shot glass amount after dinner.
Limoncello Tasting and Tour
The tour I decided to take included a walk-through of a limoncello factory. Not only did we learn all about how Limoncello was made, but also we got to taste it! I loved the fact that the lemons are freshly picked from the lemon groves in Italy. Almalfi lemons are sweeter and more fragrant than other lemons. Because of the excess oils in the zest of the lemon, they make higher quality limoncello.
The factory we went to see was actually just the back of one of the stores. While it was small, they were able to hold so many lemons! We heard how they handpick the best lemons from the trees. Then they wash the lemons and put them through the machine to remove the skin. The zest infuses with alcohol for a few days. Then it becomes limoncello!
On your tour, make sure you wear comfortable shoes and have a lightweight weather-resistant jacket ! I know how hard it can be to travel with your favorite bubble rain jacket. Because it takes up so much space, look into something LIKE THIS . It is super thin, but it has the technology to keep you warm and dry. It packs up nicely and is super easy to travel with!
THESE SHOES are super comfortable for all the walking you will be doing! If you have a pair of super comfortable sandals, you might be able to get away with it. Just know that there is quite a bit of walking!
Where can you find Limoncello?
Most Limoncello is made in the southern part of Italy because of the environment. These areas are perfect for growing the right kind of lemons for limoncello. If you are in the southern part of Italy, I would definitely recommend going to get some Limoncello from a tour or factory.
If you are in other areas of Italy, I am sure many stores will carry some. I’m one to support the little shops. Just wander around, and I am sure you will find some.
There are Limoncello flavored candies and chocolates. These are good for those who do not drink alcohol, or those who are underaged. Make sure to pick some of these chocolates up in Italy. They are really hard to find in the States!
Now, If you are in the US, like I am, it can be a little bit more difficult to find authentic limoncello. I’m not sure if it’s just because anything in Italy tastes better, but there is a definite difference between the limoncello here versus what I tried in Europe. Some Italian stores will get them imported.
So far I have found them at the EATLY market in Los Angeles , and also in a little Italy in San Diego . These places had the most authentic limoncello. EATLY had some chocolates, but they were so different that I really did not like it.
Places like Total Wines and Bevmo also have limoncello! My family and I have tried so many different ones, but our favorite is the one that says Capri on the bottle! Definitely check these out if you want to try some limoncello!

Limoncello Tasting and Tour.
