8 cabin locations on cruise ships you should definitely avoid

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

I still can remember the worst cruise ship cabin I ever had.

It was on a Carnival Cruise Line ship — I can't remember which one — and it was right in the middle of what I have come to call the "Bermuda Triangle of Bad Cabins" on Carnival ships.

This is the area on those ships around the aft elevator bank on the cabin deck that sits just above the main entertainment deck. If you're in a cabin in this area, particularly one on the starboard side, you are dealing with not only the noise of the Carnival rowdies emerging from the elevators late into the night but also — on many vessels — the sounds of the piano bar and nightclub emanating up the stairway from right below you.

Related: Why a windowless 'inside' cabin might be just fine

It isn't much better in the cabins around the forward elevator bank and stairway on the same deck, which on many Carnival ships are right above the bustling central atrium and adjacent casino. That's not exactly a quiet area.

Is it obvious I go to bed early?

Picking the perfect cabin location on a cruise ship can be a subjective exercise. Some people want to be on a high deck for the views. Others want to be on a low deck for stability. Some want to be near the kids clubs or the spa or some other venue they know they'll visit often. Some really couldn't care less. Instead, they'll book "guarantee" cabins , which is where you tell the cruise line to just pick any old cabin for you, as long as you get a deal.

Still, after testing hundreds of cabins and cabin types over the years on more than 170 ships, I've determined a few hard-and-fast rules about cabins you should usually avoid.

Cabins near elevators

is deck 2 on a cruise ship bad carnival

The areas around elevator banks and stairways on cruise ships can be noisy, just like they can be at land-based resorts and hotels. You'll get people milling around talking as they wait for an elevator car. On some ships, you'll also hear a distinctive chime every time an elevator arrives.

The situation varies from ship to ship and line to line. Some ships have elevator banks set off a bit from cabin hallways. On other ships, there is little separation between elevators and the closest cabins. Also, some ships have cabins that are more soundproof than others.

One of the great flaws of the basic cabin design on many Carnival ships — in my opinion, at least — is that there are air vents built into the cabin doors. This is meant to improve airflow — but, unfortunately, it also allows sounds from the hallway to drift right into the room.

Cabins above nightclubs (and other late-night venues)

Getting to sleep early in a cabin just above a nightclub, piano bar, music hall or theater can be a challenge depending on the soundproofing of the venue and your room. Ditto for cabins just below such a venue. I always recommend looking hard at deck plans before choosing a particular cabin to see what is just above and below the room. If it looks like it could be noisy, give it a wide berth.

Cabins in the vicinity of all-night restaurants also are worth flagging, as they can be bustling late into the night.

Cabins above the casino

The issue with being near a casino on a ship goes beyond just noise — and they definitely can be noisy. There's the smoke factor, too. On many cruise ships, the casino is the only interior place where smoking is allowed, and it thus draws a steady flow of people lighting up.

This isn't always the case, of course. Some lines — Celebrity Cruises and Oceania Cruises , for instance — ban smoking in casinos. But plenty of vessels still permit it.

While cruise lines that allow smoking in casinos try to contain it with ventilation systems, they're not always completely successful. I've been on plenty of ships where a cloud of smoke wafts out from the casino and up stairwells to nearby cabins.

Cabins below the pool deck

is deck 2 on a cruise ship bad carnival

You might think that pool decks on cruise ships are pretty quiet at night and into the morning, so staying in a cabin just below one is no big deal. But in the case of quite a few ships, you'd be wrong.

Pool decks sometimes can be the scene of late-night revelry that's loud enough to carry down to the deck below. Then when morning arrives, sometimes at a very early hour, it's common for crew members to drag lounge chairs around as they get everything shipshape for the coming day. This top-deck organizing can result in a sleep-ruining period of screeching sounds radiating from your ceiling.

You'll also want to steer clear of cabins just below basketball courts (there's nothing like a ball bouncing on your ceiling to drive you bonkers), jogging tracks and other deck-top sports areas.

Cabins near the anchor

It's not always clear where the anchor is located on a ship when looking at a deck plan. But assume it's at a low level near the front. Depending on how the ship is configured, there may not be any cabins close enough to the anchor for the sound of its deployment to be a bother. But I've been in cabins at the front of vessels where I was jolted awake at the crack of dawn on multiple days by several minutes of what sounded like a freight train rumbling by.

Being in a cabin near the anchor is a particular issue when sailing on an itinerary with a lot of "tender ports" — ports where the ship anchors offshore and the crew "tenders" passengers to land via small boats (in recent years, some lines have taken to calling these "water shuttles"). It's less of an issue if your ship will be docking for most of its port calls (not that the docking process doesn't come with its own set of noises).

Cabins anywhere close to the bow

Anchor noise issues aside, the big reason you might want to steer clear of the front of a ship is that you'll likely feel the motion of the waves more distinctly. The front of a ship can be the most uncomfortable place to be in big waves.

This is because the front of a ship pitches a lot more in waves than the center of a ship or even the back.

Think of the teeter-totter you played on as a kid. Every ship has an equilibrium point around its center (often skewed a bit to the back) that, just like the equilibrium point of a teeter-totter, moves the least as the ship bobs up and down in the waves. The closer to the front that you go, the more you are extending out on the teeter-totter, and the more you'll feel the motion.

This is more of an issue on certain ships, and in some parts of the world, than others. If you're on a giant megaship in the relatively calm Caribbean (and there isn't a tropical storm blowing nearby), you might barely feel the movement of the ocean in any cabin, no matter where it's located. But if you're on a smaller vessel in rougher seas, it can be an issue.

It also depends a lot on your tolerance for motion. After years of cruising every few weeks, I'm used to the waves. The chance of getting seasick generally never factors into my choice of cabin location. That said, if I'm booking a cabin on a small vessel on an itinerary that'll include passage through an area known for rough seas, such as the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica , even I will push for something closer to a ship's equilibrium point.

Obstructed-view cabins

is deck 2 on a cruise ship bad carnival

There are certain cabins on ships that, despite having a window, don't exactly offer the best views. Sometimes they don't offer any view at all. On some ships, there are cabins where the view from the window is partially or even completely obstructed by a lifeboat. On other ships, windows will look out over machinery — a lifeboat winch, for instance — or a structural element of the vessel such as a steel overhang.

This can be the case even for cabins with balconies. Sure, you can sit outside. But you'll be sitting in front of a big clunky lifeboat.

Normally, such cabins are marked on cruise ship deck plans with some sort of symbol denoting an obstructed view. It pays to look closely at such deck plans and, if an obstructed view is going to bother you, steer clear of the cabins that are so marked. On the positive side, obstructed-view cabins generally are priced at a lower rate than similar cabins with a complete view.

Adjoining cabins

Some cruise ship cabins are designed with doors that open to an adjacent cabin. This is a feature that appeals to families that book multiple cabins. They can book two cabins side-by-side and open up the door to create a larger complex. But such cabins can bring a downside if the people in the cabin next to you are strangers: You might hear more of them than you wish, as these doors sometimes aren't very soundproof.

If you end up next to a loud couple or kids in an adjacent cabin with a door, you might find it bothersome. I've experienced this myself over the years.

Bottom line

Not every cabin on a cruise ship is ideal. It pays to do your homework before booking a specific cabin — and that means poring over ship deck plans to make sure that you're not above, below or next to a noisy venue or in another location that could be troublesome.

Welcome to Cruise Critic!!!

The advantage of your cabin is that there should be very little motion. You're below the port side of the Casino and I doubt there'll be a great deal of noise from above... maybe 'ding ding ding' occasionally...

$840... nope... I don't think it's worth it.

3,000+ Club

The lowest deck is perfectly fine and basically identical to most of the other decks.

On the plus side, you will feel movement less.

I like the windows on the lower decks too...closer to the water and I keep hoping to see a whale or a dolphin.:)

If you're extra sensitive to noise, deck 8 is just below the Lido deck, so you might experience some noise if you go that high on the ship. If you want to be between decks of cabins, try decks 5, 6 or 7.

But I agree with Host Mach. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on the chance that there might be a tiny bit of noise in the cabin.

Stay where you are. I don't think it's worth it. As they stated noise should not be a problem.

Let us know how much noise that you encounter.

Mach is right about the less motion. If you can't hear the casino, it will likely be a quiet floor.

5,000+ Club

Take the $840.00 and set it aside. You will have a GREAT start towards your next cruise....

our first cruise we were on deck 2 inside. Everyone told us horror stories(rats, sewer smells, ect). None of this was true. It was fine. For us, we spent most of our time on the lido deck or exploring the ship. For us, it was small(4 of us) and got quite small changing for dinner but it really is just a place to sleep. Save your money, lots of other places to spend that $840!

tkat

Save your $$$. I have been under the casino and the only noise I heard was the man snoring in the room next to me late at night when everything was quite.

jsglow

You're good. Have fun.

I've only been down there once. Yes less motion. The only drawback for us was waiting on elevators, so we just took the stairs a lot. I have booked my next two cruises down there to save money and to try a PT. Hope you have a great time and you can use the money you save to buy some FCC's for all of you!

thank you all for the responses, i feel much better now! :D

8 days and counting!!

You are wise to save the money! You can use it for the deposit on your next cruise. Welcome to Cruise Critic.

mama_2_boys

If you are really concerned about the noise then take a sound machine or something to cut out the noise. I think you will be fine though. We have stayed up high and down low and honestly both were fine. Save your $ and put it towards another cruise. Have fun!

There is not a thing wrong with Deck 1 on any ship in the fleet. The only time we ever were bothered with a odor issue we were on Deck 2 and the problem was coming from an access locker outside our cabin. The plumbers and sanitation officer determined that it would require repair in port.

No one will look down on you or in any way will your experience be any different than anyone else on the ship. I do jokingly refer to the Riviera deck (1) as living in the bilge, but the only person that upsets is DW.

Hey, you're on a ship having fun cruising....how bad could it be?

The plus side is it's closer to the gangway when getting back on the ship in port.

I am down there too on our cruise! We are right by the laundry! We willbe ont he ship, and that is what matters!

We stayed on deck 1 on the Freedom and loved it! On port days, it is so easy to disembark. No waiting in long lines snaking down the staircases. Also, when coming back from port, its just up a few steps and you're at your cabin! Very convenient. We never really had a problem getting elevators to the upper levels of the ship.

Have a wonderful cruise!

We had an inside on deck 2 once and I could hear the engines, but I am a super light sleeper. I would rather not do that again, but I wouldn't pay $800 more for a higher cabin. Once you're on the ship, you're good to go!

We've been in cabin #1194 & 1180 on Miracle and have booked #1194 on Legend for next January. Both of these ships are sister ships of Carnival Pride. Great location. No noise and less motion. The only time we used the elevator was to go to the Lido deck buffet.

I also agree that it's easier when getting on & off the ship at the ports.

My SO prefers lowest deck midship inside so he won't get seasick.

See, they all agree! Deck 1 will be fine...and, good point...save the $840 for NEXT TIME!!! :D See you in 8 days!!!

richstowe

$840 more for the same cabin type on a higher deck ? Oy Gevalt ! :p

Thank you for asking this question. My family and I are booked on deck 1 on the freedom in July and I had the same concerns. We booked low and in the middle because I was afraid of sea sickness. Looks like we made a good choice.

Steerage really is not that bad......

American Way Cruise Vacations

Where is deck 2 on a cruise ship?

On a cruise ship deck, 2 is usually the deck on which you board the ship and get off the ship. This deck is above deck 1 and is usually the ground-level deck of a cruise ship.

How are decks numbered on a cruise ship?

Before we get started, it’s vital that you have a solid understanding of the cruise ship’s deck numbering system.

When it comes to cruise ships, the decks are named from lowest to highest, beginning with Deck 1 and continuing all the way up to Deck 20 or more. On the majority of cruise ships, guests are only permitted to board the ship on Decks 4 or 5, since the lower decks are off-limits to them.

The decks of a lot of cruise ships have names in addition to their numbers. For instance, the decks on the MSC Grandiosa are named after well-known painters like Monet and Van Gogh, but the decks of the Costa Deliziosa are named after decorative flowers like Petunia and Azalea.

There are certain cruise ships that use both numbers and letters to identify the decks.

Types of decks on a cruise ship

Sports Deck: In this area, which is often located towards the ship’s bow, you may find a variety of sporting amenities, such as golf nets and play areas.

Sun Deck: This deck is often used as a tanning area and is furnished with a number of loungers. It is hollow in the middle so that one may gaze below over to the pool.

Lido Deck: The platform that contains the primary outdoor swimming pool; in most cases, this is situated below the Sun Deck.

Promenade Deck: A deck located in the middle of the ship that gives passengers the ability to stroll all the way around the ship.

Landing Deck: This is the deck that you will use to board and disembark the ship. The lowest deck that passengers can reach, here is often where you’ll find them.

Deck 2 as a landing deck

When you go to board or leave from a cruise ship, you will do so from the landing deck, which is located on the ship. It is customarily the lowest deck, which is also the deck on which the entranceway or dock is situated.

deck 2 on a cruise ship

If you want to remain on the landing deck, the benefits of doing so include the fact that your cabin will be closed, you can immediately pitch in, and it is fantastic for fast and simple access in the event that you visit a number of ports.

On the other hand, you will most likely be located farther away from a significant number of additional primary conveniences. Another benefit is that it is low, making it less likely that passengers may get seasick while using it.

The phrase “landing deck” most likely got its name from the fact that this is the location where passengers “land” when they initially board a ship.

Is deck 2 suitable for people with seasickness

When it comes to avoiding motion sickness on a cruise ship, the lowest passenger deck is your best bet. This is due to the fact that the peak of a ship tends to rock back and forth far more than the bottom.

Pick a stateroom that’s not too far from the edge of the water to reduce your chances of becoming seasick. People who are prone to motion sickness might consider staying on deck 2, which is one of the lowest decks on a ship.

You should give some thought to reserving a cabin that comes equipped with a balcony if you are particularly concerned about the possibility that you may have motion sickness. If you are capable of relaxing on the balcony and staring out at the ocean, you will feel far better than if you were to lay down in bed in an inside cabin that did not have any windows.

deck 2 on a cruise ship

The cruise ship decks that are closest to the sea do not have balconies because these decks are too near to the ocean. In most cases, the balcony cabins don’t become available until the third or fourth level up.

If you don’t have enough money for a balcony stateroom, you may want to think about getting a room with a window instead. Your brain will be better equipped to deal with the motion if you are able to stare out at the horizon, which is accessible on the lower decks of the ship. As a result, you will feel less uneasy when the waves are rough.

What are the benefits of deck 2 as a lower deck of a ship?

Accessible staterooms are often positioned lower on the ship, which is convenient for passengers who have difficulty with movement. Lower decks are near the locations of embarkation and loading or unloading, in addition to the main lobby and most of the major dining rooms, so it should not be too difficult to get to most of the places you would want to go on the ship.

Lower decks may also offer greater space in the halls, which makes it simpler for passengers who use wheelchairs or other mobility aids to move about the ship.

When compared to upper decks, the number of balcony rooms on lower decks is much smaller. However, for passengers who want a more intimate view of the water, renting a balcony stateroom on a lower deck may be a very pleasant experience. The private coves offered by Carnival Cruise Line are just a few levels above the ocean and have become very popular among passengers.

If you’re someone who gets seasick easily, the ideal location to prevent motion is on a lower deck, preferably closer to the ship’s center if you have the option.

Deck 2, which is located directly above Deck 1, is often the lowest deck on the ship. This is also the landing deck of many ships, which brings with it a unique set of advantages and disadvantages.

If you have mobility issues, are prone to seasickness, want to be near to the major sections of the ship, or like to remain very close to the water, reserving a cabin on deck 2 for your next cruise could be the best option for you.

A fire in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom this weekend has disrupted a cruise of the Port Canaveral-based ship for the second time in less than two years — and will mean that the ship's next two cruises are canceled.

Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday.

Thousands of passengers with scheduled cruises will be affected by the canceled cruises during a busy spring break period for Carnival and other cruise lines.

Carnival initially had said it expected no changes in its upcoming cruises, but on Sunday afternoon said the cancellations would be required.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas.

In the statement, Carnival said: "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

In a Facebook post, Carnival's widely followed brand ambassador, John Heald, conceded that many people who booked one of the canceled cruises are "feeling very disappointed," and he apologized for the turn of events.

But, Heald added that he wanted to assure affected passengers that, "when you rebook, using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the fun you deserve."

More than 500 people responded to the post, with many saying they thought Carnival was generous with the compensation offer. But some people who said they were on the cruise that experienced the fire said they thought Carnival should have done more for the people who were on the ship.

Carnival said the fire was confined to the funnel area. The cruise line said there are no reports of injuries to passengers. Two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Carnival said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to the Carnival private island of Princess Cay due to adverse weather.

Details of previous fire: Fire breaks out on Carnival Freedom while Port Canaveral-based ship was in Grand Turk

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed."

By 5:20 p.m. Saturday, the fire was extinguished.

Carnival said the ship's captain made multiple announcements to passengers and crew, and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks.

The port-side portion of the funnel had fallen onto Deck 10, and the firefighting response put out any flames.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the fire, and Carnival activated its incident response team to support the ship’s crew.

Carnival said there were no other operational issues with the ship’s systems, and the ship, which was on a four-night cruise, was visiting Freeport on Sunday.

The Freedom sailed into the channel at Port Canaveral around 7:30 a.m. Monday, and docked at Cruise Terminal 6, letting off the passengers who were on the cruise. Carnival then awaited a Coast Guard inspection of the ship before it could be cleared to leave Port Canaveral for the Freeport shipyard for repairs. The ship left the port about 6:20 p.m.

A cruise ship funnel generally serves as a smokestack to lift emissions above the deck, thus away from passengers and crew.

On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement.

The sailing had about 3,700 passengers onboard. And the two upcoming sailings that were canceled each likely would have had a similar passenger count, because this is a busy time for the cruise industry.

The Carnival Freedom's next voyage was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday afternoon on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. That cruise had port-of-call stops scheduled at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But that sailing and a Friday sailing both have been canceled. Friday's five-night sailing also was scheduled to stop at those two ports of call, but in reverse order.

In May 2022, a fire broke out in the funnel area of the Carnival Freedom while it was docked in Grand Turk. Carnival then canceled three scheduled sailings of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral because of the need to repair the ship's fire damage at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

More recently, in October 2023, the Carnival Freedom debuted a new iconic winged funnel after returning from a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain.

  1. First time cruiser on deck 2, good or bad?

I have had great experiences being low and/or midship. In regards to location on deck 2, being below the dining room is the best spot of all. It's totally empty all night long, which cannot be said for any other spot on the ship. And even when the dining room is being used, you may only hear a slight peep, if anything.

I still can remember the worst cruise ship cabin I ever had. It was on a Carnival Cruise Line ship — I can't remember which one — and it was right in the middle of what I have come to call the "Bermuda Triangle of Bad Cabins" on Carnival ships.. Posted March 25, 2011. There is not a thing wrong with Deck 1 on any ship in the fleet. The plumbers and sanitation officer determined that it would require repair in port.
