Foals (formed in 2005) is an English alternative and indie rock band, known for combining minimalist soundscapes with dance and new wave influences, hailing from Oxford, England.

Frontman Yannis Philippakis and drummer Jack Bevan were originally in the math rock band The Edmund Fitzgerald, before deeming it too serious and parting ways. Along with vocalist Andrew Mears, guitarist Jimmy Smith, and bassist Walter Gervers, Foals was formed in 2010. The group’s debut output was the 7” single “Try This on Your Piano/Look at My Furrows of Worry” released in 2006, after which vocalist Andrew Mears left Foals to concentrate on his other band Youthmovies. Following his departure Philippakis took the leading role, and began translating the influences of techno, Arthur Russell, The Redneck Manifesto, and the Talking Heads into their signature sound.

Foals’ debut full-length “Antidotes” was recorded in New York City with TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek and released in March 2008. Featuring cryptic themes and typically melancholy compositions, the album earned rave reviews from the majority if the musical press. Aided by the singles “Balloons”, “Cassius”, “Red Socks Pugie”, and “Olympic Airways”, the album peaked at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart.

In 2009 Foals opened for Blur on their reunion show in Hyde Park, and played a host of festivals, including T in the Park and All Tomorrow’s Parties, to test out new material. The band’s follow up album, “Total Life Forever”, appeared in 2010, led by the track “Spanish Sahara”, premiered by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. Once again receiving strong reviews the album was shortlisted for 2010 Mercury Prize and charted at No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart. The full-length “Holy Fire” was released in February 2013 produced by Flood and Alan Moulder. Using animal bones acquired from butcher’s shops for percussive accoutrements, the album was led by the single “My Number”, and charted at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart.

Live reviews

Mindblowing. Asskicking. No holds barred. Take no prisoners. These are the words that come to mind when I think about a Foals show.

The first time I saw Foals was only after I had just listened to their song, "Spanish Sahara". Just that one song and my mind was made up. I needed to see them. Turns out that one song was merely a comma in the string of punctuations this band is capable of creating. That song is probably the tamest one they played, and I couldn't be more grateful.

A strobe light show starts off their performance to the band members entering one by one. Then lead singer Yannis Phillippakis takes the stage, his signature black Travis Bean guitar in hand. He had a wireless setup for that guitar - a tipoff that I immediately recognized. This show was about to get insane.

They ran through a few of their hits from their first album, "Mathletics", such as "Red Socks Pugie", and "Cassius". The crowd was in absolute hysterics. Ebbing and flowing with the music, people crowd surfing and ramming into each other. The song progressed into songs off their sophomore release, "Total Life Forever", where they played "Blue Blood", the aforementioned "Spanish Sahara", and the amped-up "Two Steps, Twice".

Then mayhem. Yannis runs top speed and propels himself into the crowd (who were miraculously ready and caught him). All the while, Yannis continues playing his guitar. What happened next was a thing of beauty. Somehow, Yannis makes his way to the side of the venue and proceeds to climb up to the balcony level, and again, launches himself off into the crowd. In all my years, I've never seen someone with such a low fear of death or injury.

Since this first performance I've seen Foals a number of times and they never disappoint. Even when they were added as a last minute addition to fill in for a band that canceled for Governor's Ball 2013, they managed to win over everyone at the festival, some saying they were the highlight of the entire event. Easily one of the best live acts I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.

Without a doubt, I have never danced, jumped, and sweat so much than when I am at a Foals show. Do yourself a favor, drop any plans you might have and go see Foals. Well worth it.

Foals are one of those bands that for me get better and better with each album ‎release. I’d not seen them perform live before last year’s Leeds festival where I ‎absolutely delighted to catch them as the ‘surprise act’. ‎

Therefore when the tickets were announced for the First Direct arena in Leeds with ‎support from Everything Everything it was a no brainer to buy them. ‎

Everything Everything gave a great performance with Jonathan Higgs’s vocals ‎fitting of a large arena. Thanks to a strong setlist the audience was fully engaged ‎and set up the stage perfectly for Foals. ‎

Foals opened with Snake Oil quickly building momentum and then maintaining it ‎with Olympic Airways and My Number. Foals did a great job of mixing in some ‎slower tracks and then whipping the crowd into a frenzy by following them up with a ‎more upbeat track, this was done to perfection when Inhaler bellowed out and ‎rounded off the pre-encore set following Late Night and A Knife in the Ocean. ‎

The stage lighting effects brilliantly added to the show throughout being at their best ‎when Foals boomed out Providence.‎

Foals first encore track was London Thunder, the crowd watched on mesmerised ‎before we were sent into chaos bouncing and singing along to What Went Down ‎before Foals closed brilliantly with Two Steps, Twice.‎

Foals stepped up another level on Saturday with their performance on the arena ‎stage and it was evident why they are winning awards, filling arenas and ‎headlining festivals.‎

Many people would argue that Foals are the most exciting British guitar band currently working to date. Though this may be a bold claim, the strength of the band's latest LP 'Holy Fire' paired with the passion and aggression of their live show could be considered a more than sufficient amount of evidence.

I was incredibly lucky to see the 'Holy Fire' tour three times, and it is a show of ultimate contrasts and a level of fan dedication I have never seen before. The crowds are moshing and jumping by the introduction of instrumental number 'Prelude' and energy levels simply increase from here. The whole crowd is a swirling mess during 'Olympic Airways' as they scream 'RE-A-PPE-AR' in time with the incredible frontman Yannis Philippakis. 'My Number' evokes yet more singalong before they bring even more momentous guitar riffs for 'Providence' as Yannis launches himself into his loyal followers to carry him whilst still picking his trusty guitar strings. The venue mellows for a moment as they play the spanning, cinematic 'Spanish Sahara' which is emotionally devastating when performed live.

The cathartic, anthemic atmosphere is indescribable as the whole audience stand awaiting the recognisable melody of 'Inhaler'. It is startling to consider Foals have only released three albums as they are fast approaching legendary status.

Foals’ ‘Holy Fire’ album tour was most aptly named indeed: Foals were so on fire, they brought the house down. Foals’ latest album has been an incredible success for the indie, alternative rock band. Having only formed in 2005, the band has gone from height to height during their short but powerful career. They have now established themselves as one of the most popular indie rock bands in Britain, amassing a huge fan base during this time. Indeed, their show was packed out with young hipsters, students and teens all crowded excitedly to watch the indie fivesome perform live. They did not disappoint. Yannis Philippakis led the band through a great show, his unique voclas capturing the crowd and Jack Bevan’s superb drumming skills working the crowd up into a frenzy with his powerful motions. Foals are so phenomenal because they succeed in blending a mix of genres, combining new wave influences with minimalist soundscapes. They are a perfect blend of techno, new wave, indie and alternative rock. Songs such as ‘My Number’, which ended the night on a brilliant high and with many excited cheers, ‘Everytime’ and ‘Bad Habit’ are all extremely catchy works of pure musical genius.

I was really pleased to get tickets for this gig - the price was amazing and to receive the album as part of the price was the icing on the cake!

I was also excited by the prospect of such an intimate gig, with the 1800 person capacity. The band were fantastic as ever!!

Having said that, the venue was really disappointing, with extremely limited views due to the amount of club-themed paraphernalia hanging from the ceiling and lots of pillars which restricted most views of the stage.

It was also awkward to travel to Kingston from East London where I work, and it was equally difficult to get from the venue to Chesham at the end of the Met line where I live.

Overall I had a great time, it was just a shame about the venue and the location.

"Spring Fling" was a awesome assortment for everyone!

The line up was excellent, and The Foals shined brightly!

The venue doesn't have the best sound, it's an empty old Armoury, steel and concrete, with hardwood floors, but the price for 4 bands, especially this line up is way worth it!

Mountain At My Gate, was and is one of the best, they didn't miss a note and listening on my phone will be a guilty pleasure even way after the show!

If you get the chance, check them out.

This line up was by far the best I've seen in a smaller venue, Cage the Elephant, Silversun Pickups, The Foals, and Bear Hands! For under $40!!!!

All serious musicians, great music good times! Crowd was a varied age group, I brought my 14yr old and had a great time!

Fantastic Foals - what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon, in the company of Yannis and co.

Played Everything Not Saved part 1 in its entirety, gave us a couple of extra treats and a preview of a track from Part 2, black bull. No bull only brilliant music from a band that are on fire.

Matinee performance, great to see young Foals fans there. Well managed entry, Fat Sams a good venue. Can’t wait for them to come around again. Dundee really is the capital of cool after hosting two gigs in one day by this might band.

What can I say about Foals other than they are fantastic! I've seen them 3 times and they are definitely one of my most favourite bands.

Their music is electrifying, the laser light show amazing and Yannis, as expected, did his crowd surfing.

Most of the songs were from their most recent album "What Went Down" but there were also other songs from the previous wonderful "Holy Fire" album as well as a track from an earlier album.

The crowd seemed to relish every song - a truly enjoyable gig in every sense.

Saw them first at Glastonbury a few years back but spent so much time trying to survive the mosh pit didn't know what I felt about the band. Thursday nights performance in Kingston really sorted out any uncertainty I had. One of the best live acts I have seen and an incredibly generous performance with new and old tracks. They played longer than expected so we were totally spoilt for our £11 tickets.

Foals Announce Fall 2022 North American Tour Dates

Life is yours due out this friday via ada/warner uk ltd..

Foals are releasing a new album, Life Is Yours , this Friday via ADA/Warner UK Ltd. Now they have announced a 25-date North American tour for this fall. The shows happen in October, November, and December and traverse America, as well as including two Canadian dates and one in Mexico. Tickets go on sale this Friday (June 17) at 10 a.m. local time. Check out all the dates below.

Life Is Yours follows the two-part album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost , with both parts released in 2019.

Frontman Yannis Philippakis had this to say about the album in a previous press release: “We wanted to refocus and do something that shared a DNA throughout the songs: a physicality, a danceability, and with energy and joyousness. It’s definitely the poppiest record we’ve ever made. I feel that with Everything Not Saved… we touched upon all of the facets of our sound up until that point. This time we wanted to find a new way to express ourselves.”

Foals also features Jimmy Smith and Jack Bevan. The album began in a London rehearsal space during pandemic lockdown and was recorded at Real World Studios. Various producers worked on the album, including: John Hill (Portugal The Man, Florence + The Machine), Dan Carey (Tame Impala, Fontaines D.C.), Miles James, and A.K. Paul (co-founder of the Paul Institute with his brother Jai Paul). Manny Marroquin (Post Malone, Kanye West, Rihanna) mixed most of the album, with some tracks mixed by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Coldplay, Muse, Kings of Leon).

The band previously shared album track “Wake Me Up” last November, which was one of our Songs of the Week . That was followed by its second single, “2am,” as well as a video for the song that was shot in Kyiv, Ukraine with an entirely Ukrainian crew. Then they shared its third single, “Looking High,” via a video for the new song. “Looking High”made our Songs of the Week list. Then they shared its fourth single, “2001,” via a video for the new song.

Check out our interview with Foals on their 2019 album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost - Part 1 .

2024 Masters sleeper picks to watch: Here’s who might break out at Augusta National

Rejoice! It's that time of the year again.

Getty Images

Here, in the piece headlined “2024 Masters sleeper picks to watch: Here’s who might break out at Augusta,” you won’t find Scottie Scheffler . Or Jon Rahm . Or Rory McIlroy . Or Brooks Koepka . Their odds to win are too good. We’ll be digging deeper.

Into the 100-1 bunch.

Where you’ll find a dude:

— Who tied for sixth at the Players Championship;

— Who, after his Players final round, said he believed he was focusing better;

— Who hasn’t missed a cut in nine events this year;

— Who hasn’t missed a cut at Augusta National since doing so at his first Masters, with finishes of 29th, 39th, 34th, 12th, 21st and 24th

And there’s also this, which was first spotted by CBS’ Kyle Porter : Entering last week’s Texas Open, the pro was third this season on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green. Above him were: Scheffler and Xander Schauffele , while immediately below him were Hideki Matsuyama , Shane Lowry and Tony Finau .

Or put another way, in that metric, you’ll find a pro with 100-1 odds to win the Masters — among players who have 4-1 odds (Scheffler), 20-1 odds (Schauffele), 28-1 odds (Matsuyama), 40-1 odds (Lowry) and 33-1 odds (Finau).

Interesting.

Of course, backing Si Woo Kim is risky.

The putting has been worrisome this year (138th in SG: Putting). And there’s also his adventurous moment in 2021, when he snapped his putter on the 15th green . (On the final three greens, he putted with his 3-wood.) And those are among the reasons he’s lower on the odds board.

But there’s maybe some value to be found.

With that, let’s continue to dig. Below, members of our staff have each made a long-shot selection to assist you with your own weekly picks , whether those are for a low-stakes office fantasy league, or (legal!) big-bucks bets with a sportsbook. It’s an enjoyable endeavor for us. Deploy it as you wish.

On to our analysis.

2024 Masters sleeper picks to watch

PGA Tour golfers aren't the only ones who can make some 💰 starting next Thursday. You can too! Here are a few tips. https://t.co/uldLYRZvRh — Nick Piastowski (@nickpia) June 5, 2020

Ryan Barath

Sleeper pick: Grayson Murray, +40,000. Grayson has won this year, and drives it well. Looking at his most-recent results, he closed out the Players with a Sunday 64, and considering his odds, I think this is a great little pick.

Josh Berhow

Sleeper pick: Rickie Fowler, +8,000. He hasn’t played great this year, and you might be surprised to learn this is his first Masters in four years, but he’s always played well at Augusta (five top-12 finishes) and maybe, just maybe, some day he’s going to win the big one. Logic says it might be on a course he’s got more familiarity with than about three-fourths of the field. (Sleeper pick runner-up: Russell Henley.)

Adam Christensen

Sleeper pick: Byeong Hun An, +15,000. Not only has he been playing some great golf this season, but his game is a great fit for Augusta. Absolutely bombs the ball off the tee and has the short game to work with the slopes around Augusta. If he has an above-average putting week, he will have a chance. Si Woo Kim (+10,000) is another intriguing option. He’s played well to start the year, posting elite approach and around the green numbers. He could improve his chances by snapping the putter and moving to the 3-wood earlier in the week this time.

James Colgan

Sleeper pick: Nicolai Hojgaard, +15,000. A rising Ryder Cupper at 150-1? Sign me up. Nicolai’s got ball-striking prowess for days and, most importantly, the spunk to show up at Augusta National and genuinely believe he’ll leave with a green jacket. For six times the odds of fellow Masters rookie Ludvig Aberg, I like it. And if you’re looking for comatose sleepers? Look no further than Adrian Meronk.

Viktor Hovland and caddie Shay Knight at the Puerto Rico Open in February.

How often favorites win tournaments (and when to bet on them)

Dylan Dethier

Sleeper pick: Erik van Rooyen, +15,000. He may be available at this price because he’s been so bad in major championships. But he’s a different player now! For bonus picks, gimme Stephan Jaeger and Si Woo Kim (both at 100-1), Ben An (150-1) plus Harris English (125-1) and let’s throw some darts.

Nick Dimengo

Sleeper pick: Gary Woodland, +25,000. I know, Woodland’s still working his way back after having major surgery to remove a brain lesion last August, but isn’t Augusta where magic happens? There wouldn’t be a better story than to see the 39-year-old shock the golf world by earning his first-ever green jacket, so I’m here for it. Plus, he’s already a major champ — having won the 2019 U.S. Open — and he had his best-ever finish at the Masters last year (T14), so give me this and let’s all remember why we love the game of golf so much.

Connor Federico

Sleeper pick: Nick Dunlap, +25,000. Remember all the noise amateur Sam Bennett made last year at Augusta? Well, while Dunlap isn’t an amateur any longer, he and Bennett are the most recent U.S. Am champions — and I like this prodigious newcomer to play his way into the final group, just like Bennett did last year. For many who’ve watched Dunlap’s meteoric rise from college sophomore to PGA Tour winner in the past few months, it’s not a question of if Dunlap wins a green jacket, but when .

Jack Hirsh

Sleeper pick: Keegan Bradley, +17,500!!!!!!! These odds are just silly. Criminal. They’re worse than Tiger’s or Phil’s (125-1). As disrespectful as leaving him off the Ryder Cup team would have been. Oh, that happened? Keegs is going to be eager to prove himself as a major champ once again. Had a good January with a playoff loss at Sony and a T11 at Pebble. Though, these odds are probably a product of missing three out of his past four cuts. While he never has recorded a top-10 at the Masters, he’s also missed the cut only once in seven tries.

Nick Piastowski

Sleeper pick: Si Woo Kim, +10,000. Heading into last week’s Texas Open, Kim was third in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green on the PGA Tour. I like that. Just needs a hot putter for four days.

Sleeper pick: Corey Conners, +6,600. Prior to his missed cut at Augusta last year, Conners had three consecutive top 10s at the Masters. He also has a habit of making runs up the leaderboard in big events. Whether his putter can hold up is a question. Another question is whether 66-to-1 really counts as a dark horse. But tell me you wouldn’t be happy with that payout. I would. And I don’t see any longer shots that really appeal.

Ryan Palmer hits out of the sand during last year's Charles Schwab Challenge.

Four experts on how to bet on PGA Tour golf like a professional gambler

Jonathan Wall

Sleeper pick: Nicolai Hojgaard, +15,000. Going against conventional wisdom that states you should avoid first-timers at the Masters. I think the Dane has the pedigree to bust the trend.

Sean Zak

Sleeper pick: Russell Henley, +8,000. No one has played better golf while flying completely under the radar for the past 12 months. No one. Henley is ranked 15th by DataGolf, but was never really in the running for a Ryder Cup pick last fall. He’s really never been in the running for a bunch of victories, either. But it was just last year that he tied for fourth at Augusta.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
