Home sweet home ownership, summertime and the livin’ is easy.

I t’s peak season for many local homeowners and would-be homeowners to dip their toes in the pool and test the waters of the newest, most resource-efficient and environmentally friendly houses available across greater Eugene and Springfield. It’s the season of the 34th Annual Tour of Homes.

As always, this summer’s edition of the tour is a centerpiece on the agenda of the Home Builders Association of Lane County and the HBA’s host of partner builders, realtors, and local business sponsors. This year’s event features more than a dozen new family homes from across the metro area. These houses range in size from modest 1,100-square-foot, two-bedroom domiciles to 5,800-square-foot estates. The prices run from $200,000 to nearly $1.8 million. The architecture embraces modern ranch, colonial, craftsman, and cottage styles.

The Home Builders Association of Lane County was established over 60 years ago. HBA members are individuals or firms engaged in land development, building, or remodeling residential and commercial structures. Associate HBA members include a wide mix of subcontractors, material suppliers, and service vendors working in support of the building industry.

“The organization has held pretty steady over its history,” says HBA executive Ed McMahon. The HBA has long served as an advocate and lobbyist for the needs of its members. “However,” says McMahon, “we consider ourselves to be local ambassadors for homeownership.” Homeownership is hugely important to the economy, he says, and “it’s the cornerstone of the American dream. And that’s what our organization is really all about.”

McMahon lists some ways that homeownership contributes to the strength of Lane County communities: It’s the foundation for family and personal achievement; many community members view homeownership as a primary source of their financial resources and security; homeownership plays a role in our children’s education, our sense of well-being, and our retirement plans.

Evidence suggesting a trend in which millennials are stepping back from homeownership is somewhat confusing. Locally, there is a clear housing shortage in the immediate Eugene metro area. And the cost of new housing has soared, largely due to the shortage of buildable land. Yet, U.S. Census data shows that young adults are increasingly entering the housing market as first-time buyers. In 2017, for example, millennials registered the largest gains of all age groups when it came to homeownership.

“Supply, demand!” says McMahon. “What happens if there’s a large demand but there’s no supply of land?” Well, for one thing, it puts pressure on the entry-level housing market. Other costs that adversely affect first-time buyers especially, he says, include fees, building regulations, and storm water requirements.

Less than five years ago, McMahon says, a builder could purchase a shovel-ready lot for $80,000 in the Eugene market. “Well, that $80,000 today is more like $150,000.”

And so the HBA engages in activities that reflect its desire to support home construction and homeownership as a key component of the American dream. They work with city and county governments on land use and housing regulations. They back candidates who support the HBA agenda. They pursue court action to prevent government fees and zoning laws they consider illegal.

And they address ongoing housing affordability concerns in our community—concerns that include construction worker shortages, the lack of buildable lots, veteran housing needs, mortgage liquidity concerns, and tariffs on lumber and other building materials.

The Tour of Homes? Good stuff! But the Home Builder’s Association has lots of other instruments in its toolbox, too.

Builders open doors for Lane County Tour of Homes

No more curious peering through windows — these 10 home projects will open for viewing inside and out during the Tour of Homes running July 21-29 in Eugene, Springfield and Coburg.

Each year since 1985, members of the Home Builders Association of Lane County have showcased their latest works of architecture, materials, technology and living concepts at the tour. This year’s event — number 33 — features nine brand-new homes and one extensive remodel.

Guests may visit the homes without charge from noon to 6 p.m. on weekends and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weeknights. Builders offer brief descriptions of what guests will find at each house on the self-guided tour:

1. Hayden Homes, 32913 E. Lincoln St., Coburg. Two-story, four-bedroom and three-bath cottage with 2,042 square feet is valued at $389,990. Alley-accessed garage; silver tile in kitchen and dining room; white quartz slab surfaces; beverage bar with 56-bottle fridge; spacious master suite; back patio; stainless-steel appliances.

2. Hayden Homes, 893 Argon Ave., Eugene. Four-bedroom, three-bath, two-level home with 2,258 square feet valued at $465,990. Fossil-gray quartz slab surfaces; gas fireplace with designer bamboo accent; engineered hardwood flooring in hickory pattern; spacious master suite; beverage bar with wine fridge; covered porch and back patio.

3. Katrina Wester Builder LLC, 3481 Quail Meadow Way, Eugene. Cottage-style home with 2,092 square feet includes three bedrooms and two baths. Valued at $660,000. About the Presenters

Ann Turner is a retired physician from a career in community health, first in South Central Los Angeles and then in Oregon. She volunteers with Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility’s Healthy Climate Action Team to address the health and environmental justice issues interwoven with the climate crisis.

Phil Barnhart is a former Attorney, Psychologist, and State Representative. He became interested in electric transportation in 2011 when his son suggested he look at Tesla Motors' website. He learned fast that EVs are fun, comfortable, and economical to drive and will help save the future for our grandchildren. In 2019 he helped found the Emerald Valley Electric Vehicle Association, a chapter of the Electric Vehicle Association. EVEVA is going strong and ready to come to your event and show off our volunteer owners' EVs.

Vince McClellan has spent his life learning and perfecting his skill in solar electric design and construction. With thousands of installations over a 40-year career, and tenure at Lane Community College’s renewable energy associate of applied science program, he is a pioneer in the solar industry. Starting in the Hawaiian islands in 1982 installing the first commercially available solar panels he became one of a small group of people that helped to define what the solar industry has become.

THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE GALVESTON HISTORIC HOMES TOUR RETURNS MAY 4, 5, 11 & 12, 2024

Galveston Historical Foundation opens the doors to Galveston’s architectural history through public tours of privately owned homes during its annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour. Large, small, and everything in between, the 2024 tour will have something for everyone! In addition to the tours, the annual event features numerous special events, allowing guests unique experiences in many of the tour homes and historic sites across the island.

ABOUT GALVESTON HISTORICAL FOUNDATION

Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) was formed as the Galveston Historical Society in 1871 and merged with a new organization formed in 1954 as a non-profit entity devoted to historic preservation and history in Galveston County. Over the last sixty years, GHF has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, coastal resiliency and stewardship of historic properties. GHF embraces a broader vision of history and architecture that encompasses advancements in environmental and natural sciences and their intersection with historic buildings and coastal life and conceives of history as an engaging story of individual lives and experiences on Galveston Island from the 19th century to the present day.

Oregon reset changed future of U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark

Casey Martin gave a one-sentence command to assistant coach John Ellis: “You take Dub.”

It was Oct. 4, 2016, and Wyndham Clark, known affectionately as Dub, was competing in the Nike Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, his first event as an Oregon Duck.

Dub was a redshirt senior; Ellis, a retired mini-tour journeyman in his first coaching gig.

“Dub runs hot,” said Martin, Oregon’s golf coach. “Volatile at times. And John’s humor and needling had a way of deflecting it. After that fall tournament at Colonial, I told John, ‘This guy needs you, and we need him. Manage Dub and get him to the house.’”

Clark placed second at Colonial Country Club, two shots behind Stanford’s Maverick McNealy; but more importantly, Ellis broke through.

When Ellis prodded, Dub laughed. When Wyndham fumed, Ellis harnessed the reins.

Seven years later, Ellis caddied Clark to the 2023 U.S. Open title and will be on the bag for Wyndham’s first Masters appearance this year.

“You could feel the connection right away,” Martin said. “When Dub got to Oregon, he had been derailed by life, and his golf game was struggling because of it. 

“Oregon was his detox.”

It was summer 2016 and Wyndham’s college years had been upended by the 2013 loss of his mother to breast cancer. 

As a freshman at Oklahoma State, Clark received a medical hardship. The next season, he was crowned Big 12 Player of the Year.

Then his game deteriorated. 

As a sophomore, he made 10 starts, never placing higher than 15th, and finished 145th at the NCAA Championship. The next season, Clark received a text from Jeff Gaskill prior to the 2016 NCAAs at Eugene Country Club.

Gaskill, a member at the club, had first met Clark at the Pacific Coast Amateur when he agreed to host the teenager from Denver. Now, he wanted to extend an invite.

“Wyndham replied and said he wasn’t coming,” Gaskill recalled. “Then he said he was probably going to transfer.”

Late that summer, Clark packed his car, and drove from Stillwater to Denver to Eugene. Twenty-nine straight hours.

“Wyndham called us from Bend and goes, ‘How much further,’” Gaskill recalled. “I said, ‘Still a couple more hours.’”

He arrived at the Gaskills' home at 3 a.m.

“The plan was for Wyndham to stay a few weeks, and then move into a place with teammates,” Gaskill said.

Jeff and Jaime had two young girls, and were expecting their third. But when Clark walked inside, he never left.

And before long, the Gaskills became close with Ellis, too.

Ellis, whose fianceé lived in Minnesota, was alone in Oregon, and spent countless evenings beneath the Gaskills' roof.

The group ate sushi, played pool, shot hoops and, before long, Wyndham did something he hadn’t done in three years: Win.

Then he won again. Finally, a third individual victory at the Pac 12 Tournament.

After 12 months in Eugene, Ellis moved to Minnesota, while Clark turned professional.

Meanwhile, Gaskill made two pledges.

The first: He wouldn’t drink a beer until Clark’s maiden PGA Tour victory. The second was that he wouldn’t set foot on Augusta until Wyndham qualified.

“It took five years for me to open a beer,” Gaskill said. 

Now, Gaskill arrives in Georgia, making true on his second pledge. 

“I’m staying Monday to Monday,” Jeff said. “Do I think Wyndham has a chance? With his short game, the way he putts, I absolutely believe he’ll be in contention."
