Statement From Robert Smith, The Cure

  • TICKETS WILL BE NON-TRANSFERABLE : Ticketmaster will be following the artist’s terms and any tickets sold on our platform will be non-transferable to prevent tickets being resold for a profit. (Please note: This does not apply to tickets purchased for tour dates in New York and Illinois, where state laws prohibit artists from restricting resale).
  • TICKETS CAN ONLY BE RESOLD AT FACE VALUE : To give fans flexibility if their plans change, the tour will utilize Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange, which allows fans to sell their tickets for the price they paid, including fees and taxes. That way, if a fan can’t make the show, they have a way to get their money back while making another fan’s night.
  • THE ONSALE WILL USE VERIFIED FAN TO GET TICKETS TO FANS : The Cure is leveraging Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan technology to ensure more tickets get into the hands of concertgoers. Verified Fan requires registration to help filter out buyers looking to resell tickets, and instead get them into the hands of fans who want to attend the show. While there may not be enough tickets for everyone, Verified Fan does significantly block bots and professional resellers from competing against fans for tickets during the sale. It also provides an equal opportunity for all fans to get the chance to purchase tickets to shows by using a lottery-style selection process.

Fans mean everything to artists, and we at Ticketmaster believe that the best way to ensure a fair ticketing experience for live music fans is to put more control in the hands of the artists themselves. How does Ticketmaster Verified Fan work?

Artists choose to use Verified Fan to give their fans a better chance at buying tickets by creating an extra line of defense against bots and professional resellers who are looking to get tickets for profit. The process includes three steps:

Step 1: Registration

By registering for a Verified Fan sale, you are letting us know that you’re interested in purchasing tickets. From the registration page, you  sign in to your account, select your preferred show(s) and register your email and phone number. Once completed, you’ll automatically receive a confirmation email letting you know that we got your request. It’s quick, easy and free to sign up.

Step 2: Verification

Next Ticketmaster vets each request by confirming it belongs to an individual  – not a bot – and that it hasn’t been tied to irregular behaviors that could be a sign of a professional seller attempting to access the sale.

Access Code or Waitlist

When demand exceeds availability, a lottery-style process will determine which registered Verified Fans get an access code for the sale, and which are put on a waitlist. You’ll receive an email the day prior to the ticket sale letting you know which group you’re in.

Access Code: If you receive an access code, it will be sent via text message. It is unique to your account, and will not work if anyone else enters it – do not try to sell or trade your code.

Waitlist: If tickets remain, we may text you an access code to join the ticket sale. The lottery-style process will be used to determine who gets off the waitlist.

While it doesn’t guarantee that all Verified Fans will get tickets, it does significantly block bots and professional resellers from competing against fans for tickets during the sale .

What does it mean if a ticket is non-transferable?

When tickets are non-transferable, it means that the transfer feature is disabled by the event organizer to prevent tickets from being resold for a profit.

If you can no longer attend a show, you can sell your tickets for the price you paid using Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange . Important note: Fans should not attempt to purchase tickets from sites outside of those made available on the Face Value Exchange. Learn more about how to avoid fake “speculative” tickets for live events.

What is Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange?

Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange allows fans to sell their tickets to other fans at the price they paid, including fees and taxes. Artists choose to leverage the Ticket Exchange marketplace to protect fans who can no longer make the show. It also gives fans looking for tickets access to purchase them at a fair price.

How do I list tickets for sale on the Face Value Exchange?

It’s quick and easy to list your tickets for sale on the Face Value Exchange.

Here’s how it works:

  • Sign in to My Account, click My Tickets then select See Details next to your event.
  • Click the Sell button.
  • Choose to list one or all your tickets for the price you paid.
  • Tell us how you’d like to get paid.
  • Review your listing and you’re all set .

If I sell my tickets on the Face Value Exchange, will I get back the fees I paid when I purchased my tickets?

Yes. If you have purchased a ticket on our platform and discover you can’t use it, you’ll be able to make your money back by selling your ticket for exactly what you originally paid, including fees.

What does it cost to sell tickets on the Face Value Exchange?

There are no additional fees charged to buy or sell tickets on the Face Value Exchange.

What does it cost to buy tickets on the Face Value Exchange?

There are no additional fees charged when purchasing tickets on the Face Value Exchange. The tickets are listed at an all-in price including face value and fees paid by the original buyer.

The Cure Look to Limit Scalping, Platinum Prices on Upcoming Tour

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

Fans and artists trying to find solutions for a more fan-friendly ticketing experience may want to look to The Cure .

After the English rock band announced their first U.S. tour in seven years earlier this week, The Cure said Friday that tickets for most of their shows wouldn’t be transferrable, part of an effort to help make sure tickets sell only for face value and that customers won’t pay exorbitant prices from scalpers.

“We want the tour to be affordable for all fans, and we have a very wide (and we think very fair) range of pricing at every show,” The Cure said in a statement on Friday. “Our ticketing partners have agreed to help us stop scalpers from getting in the way; to help minimize resale and keep prices at face value, tickets for this tour will not be transferrable. If something comes up that prevents a fan from being able to use a ticket they have purchased, they will be able to resell it on a face value ticket exchange.”

In an email to fans, Robert Smith vowed to keep ticket prices reasonable, writing: “THE CURE HAVE AGREED ALL TICKET PRICES, AND APART FROM A FEW HOLLYWOOD BOWL CHARITY SEATS, THERE WILL BE NO ‘PLATINUM’ OR ‘DYNAMICALLY PRICED’ TICKETS ON THIS TOUR.”

Their website also says that tickets have been priced by the band to “benefit fans and our efforts to block scalpers and limit inflated resale prices”, supported by ticketing partners.

The Cure have not toured the US since 2016, but performed at Pasadena Daydream Festival and Austin City Limits in 2019.

Smith has repeatedly teased The Cure’s new record to NME  as a  dark, “merciless, relentless ” piece, inspired by  a period of great loss and in a similar spirit to their 1989 gothic art-rock album ‘Disintegration’.

Reviewing The Cure in London this December , NME described the show as “an unusual, but thrilling festive party”.

Elsewhere, Noel Gallagher released Robert Smith‘s remix of  High Flying Birds ‘ track ‘Pretty Boy’ this week, with The Cure frontman sharing that he was “surprised and delighted” when when the former Oasis singer-songwriter asked him to “remix this gorgeous song”.

Breaking news, the cure is on tour and these ticket prices will surprise you.

Three images of Robert Smith performing combine to create a unique visual.

At each and every gig on their 2023 ‘Songs of a Lost World Tour,’ The Cure put on a career-spanning 2.5-hour concert.

That’s a Taylor Swift length show.

However, tickets don’t cost nearly as much to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers live this summer.

While prices to see Swift typically hover above $1000, we found tickets to see Robert Smith and co. going for as low as $8 before fees (!) on Vivid Seats this summer.

While that price tag is an outlier — tickets for most remaining shows on the run start in the $20 to $200 range — it does demonstrate that great deals to see the band live are out there.

You just have to keep an eye out.

Especially when the “Just Like Heaven” rockers drop into New York City’s Madison Square Garden from June 20-22.

Over the course of the three-night MSG stay, prices start at $97 before fees but as we get closer to the mini-residency, things could certainly change.

You just might get to hear “Friday, I’m In Love,” “Close To Me,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” “In Between Days,” “Pictures of You” and so many more live for less than a beer.

The Cure festival appearance

In addition to the summer run of shows, the band will also take the stage at Chicago’s Riot Fest which takes place Sept. 15-17 at Douglass Park.

At the three-day extravaganza, they’ll perform alongside fellow legends like Foo Fighters , Death Cab For Cutie , Queens of the Stone Age , The Mars Volta , The Gaslight Anthem and many, many more.

If you want to cross all the above acts off your bucket list in one fell swoop, you can snag tickets to Riot Fest 2023 here .

At all remaining shows, the goth icons will be joined by Scottish post-punk/indie rock outfit The Twilight Sad.

The five-member group is most well-known for their 2014 album  “Nobody Wants To Be Here & Nobody Wants To Leave”  which spawned their most popular tracks, the moody “There’s A Girl In The Corner,” pulsating “I Could Give You All That You Don’t Want” and ethereal “Last January.”

Updated on March 17 with the latest information on ticket fees for The Cure's 2023 tour.

First Ticketmaster provoked the ire of Swifties — fans of pop star Taylor Swift — and now it's coming for another group of devotees in decidedly darker clothing: fans of The Cure.

Anyone who attempted to purchase Verified Fan presale tickets on Wednesday was met with an array of added fees that, in some cases, more than doubled the total cost of a ticket to see the legendary English new wave band.

One Twitter user buying tickets to a show in Detroit shared a screenshot of a checkout page showing that for each $20 face-value ticket purchased, she was charged a service fee of $11.65 and a facility charge of $10, topped off with a processing fee of $5.50 for the full order. That's $27.15 in fees on a $20 ticket.

The Cure frontman Robert Smith took to Twitter later that day to express his dismay with the fees writing, "To be very clear: The artist has no way to limit them. I have been asking how they are justified."

By late Thursday evening, Smith tweeted that the band had worked with Ticketmaster on a compromise regarding fees. "After further conversation, Ticketmaster have agreed with us that many of the fees being charged are unduly high," Smith wrote, adding that Ticketmaster would be automatically refunding $10 per ticket to all Verified Fan accounts for all "lowest ticket price" transactions and $5 per ticket refunds to all other price transactions. He also said all tickets on sale for the public sale Friday would be priced with lower fees.

NerdWallet News

Range of tickets prices offered

On March 10, The Cure announced via social media it would be offering affordable tickets for its North American tour, writing, “We have a very wide (and we think very fair) range of pricing at every show.” The band said it had come up with an agreement with Ticketmaster to help stop ticket scalping and minimize resale price gouging by not allowing for transferable tickets. Fans would instead be able to resell them on a face-value ticket exchange.

The Cure also announced there would be no “platinum” or “dynamically priced” tickets for the 30-date tour, which kicks off on May 10 in New Orleans. On Twitter, Smith referred to these higher price ticket levels as “a greedy scam.”

For comparison, face-value ticket prices for Bad Bunny, 2022’s top touring act (according to Billboard), averaged more than $200, with the lowest tier coming in at about $150.

The upset among Cure fans comes four months after Ticketmaster abruptly canceled its public sale of tickets for Swift’s long-awaited Eras tour after technical difficulties, long wait times, and, ultimately, prematurely outselling its inventory of tickets through a multitiered presale for Verified Fans. All the while, resellers posted tickets for tens of thousands of dollars. The move prompted disappointed Swifties to file a class-action lawsuit accusing Ticketmaster of fraud, misrepresentation and antitrust violations.

Biden and Congress eye junk fees

In November, President Joe Biden announced that he planned to take action against hidden junk fees, specifically referencing processing fees on concert tickets, tweeting “they’re unfair, deceptive, and add up.” Then, in February, Biden introduced the Junk Fee Prevention Act, which would crack down on excessive entertainment ticketing fees.

In a White House press release, Biden called on Congress to take action by prohibiting excess fees, requiring fees to be disclosed in the face value of the ticket, and mandating disclosure of any ticket holdbacks that would lower available supply for consumers.

Congress is taking notice. On Feb. 23, members of a Senate Judiciary subcommittee overseeing competition policy urged the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division to investigate Live Nation and Ticketmaster over concerns they hold monopoly power. In a letter to the DOJ, the group of bipartisan senators wrote, “For too long, Live Nation and Ticketmaster have wielded monopoly power anticompetitively, harming fans and artists alike.” The letter followed a January hearing by the Senate Judiciary Committee that delved into the Taylor Swift ticketing debacle.

Live Nation Entertainment — formed by the 2010 merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster — reportedly owns an estimated 70% of the live event ticket brokering market, according to consumer advocates.

However, he has continued his habit of speaking emotionally about the process even as he gets deep in the weeds. “FYI these are our Portland, OR ticket prices – a few of the front rows are a bit more expensive* (this helps ‘subsidise’ the cheaper tickets) $130.00 $110.00 $90.00 $70.00 $50.00 $30.00 usd… *front 14 rows go from $150.00 up to $230.00 (for row 1)… X,” adding:

“I could go on… The main point is, we decided the ticket prices, and are content that they are fair – we don’t want to price anybody out of the show. Any major artist can do the same. But we cannot control the fees that are added… Hope everyone that wants a ticket gets one.”
