Bugaboo Butterfly Stroller Review

joolz aer stroller

We bought the Bugaboo Butterfly and 19 other lightweight strollers and compared them in more than 100 tests. The Butterfly is a comparatively high-priced but high-quality stroller that performs well in folding, maneuverability and quality, and performs adequately in ease of use and kid comfort. Overall it is one of our top 3 most recommended umbrella strollers.

How it Compares

The Bugaboo Butterfly is a high-quality and relatively high-priced lightweight, regular-use or travel stroller.

The Butterfly is the replacement for the now-discontinued Bugaboo Ant compact stroller. The Butterfly scored in the top 3 in our testing and received one of our buy recommendations.

Most Common Complaints

We read all of the critical reviews about the Butterfly and summarized both the complaint and our own experience below. We have not experienced pilling of the fabric or scratches on the frame. It is possible that Bugaboo has addressed those problems or that they only occur for certain color options.

Testing and Research

We purchased 20 of the most popular and best-reviewed umbrella strollers to perform hands-on testing, comparing greater than 100 tests and measurements in the areas of Ease of Use, Folding, Steering, Quality and Kid Comfort.

Our Review Video

Weight and Folded Size

The lightest strollers were between 11 and 13 lbs and the Bugaboo Butterfly weighs. 16.1 lbs. Despite its extra weight the Butterfly folds very compactly to only 2.0 ft 3 .

While its folded size is slightly larger than the 22″x14″x9″ guidelines for most domestic, US airlines, you may still be able to carry it on and stow it in overhead bins. Just depends on the airline and how closely they are checking.

Folded Size

Steering and Maneuverability

The Bugaboo Butterfly steers and maneuvers relatively well on smooth surfaces. It doesn’t travel over gravel or rough terrain without lots of effort.

On flat surfaces, the Butterfly had less wheel vibration and associated noise than any other stroller.

Overall Steering and Maneuverability Ratings:

Lightweight umbrella strollers are great for jumping curbs. This Bugaboo is average when it comes to the amount of downward force needed to lift the front wheels over a curb.

The Butterfly does a better job than most other strollers at going straight without veering to one side or the other. The table below shows the number of inches the Butterfly traveled without veering off the center-line.

Ease of Use

bugaboo butterfly storage basket

The storage basket under the Bugaboo Butterfly is larger, has a higher weight limit and is more accessible than those on most strollers. It is .75 cubic feet and holds up to 18 lbs.

The bar that runs across the top of the basket sometimes gets in the way. I like being able to access the basket from the front and back of the stroller.

Storage Capacity:

Unfortunately, the stroller doesn’t come with a parent console or any other pockets or cubbies. Organizers, cup holders, and smartphone holders can be purchased separately.

bugaboo butterfly with peekaboo mesh canopy allowing you to see the doll in the seat

The canopy can be unzipped to reveal a large mesh section that allows you to see your baby. This pekaboo window also provides a significant amount of ventilation.

The canopy is sturdy and easy to operate.

bugaboo butterfly canopy zipper

The Butterfly handle is a refined faux leather that feels well-made. It is 39″ high and is not adjustable. This handle height is workable for the majority of parents.

There is a safety strap attached to the handle you can use to keep the stroller from running away from you, but is really only necessary on hills.

There is a very small amount of give where the handle attaches to the frame. Generally, the handle feels rigid and secure even while pushing older, bigger children.

bugaboo butterfly handle

The Butterfly, probably because of its weight and wheel configuration was a bit more likely to tip over sideways than other compact strollers in our tip-over test.

Tip-over testing the uppababy minu v2

We unboxed and set up the Bugaboo in 3 minutes flat. Fortunately, it was easy because the user manual isn’t organized well.

Bugaboo butterfly single brake pedal

There is a single brake pedal that stops both back wheels. It is comfortable to press down to engage and doesn’t hurt sandaled feet to disengage.

However, sometimes we have to push the pedal more than once to get it to lock in place.

The Butterfly’s buckle is solid and reliable, but you have to snap in all four harness clips each time. Many strollers only require two snaps to take care of a 5-point harness.

The recline mechanism is a simple pull on the handle to lower the seat. Raising it back up is equally simple with a tug on the recline strap.

The Bugaboo harnesses are some of the easiest we’ve found to adjust. Buckles on both the hip and shoulder straps move smoothly to release or tighten the straps.

A car seat adapter is sold separately. It is compatible with certain Nuna, Clek, Cybex, Kiddy Evolution and Maxi-Cosi infant car seats. And is of course compatible with the Bugaboo Turtle Air and Turtle One car seats.

Folding and Transport

Our “How to fold the Bugaboo Butterfly” video:

The Butterfly opens and folds in only a couple of seconds. It can be folded with one hand and the whole operation is fast and easy.

Fold Ratings:

laying folded on its side

It is among the smallest strollers folded at 2.0 cubic feet, but as we mentioned above, it is 3 inches wider than some airlines allow in an overhead compartment.

The Babyzen YoYo2 on left, Bugaboo Butterfly center, and Joolz Aer on right. All strollers are folded and standing in a row.

The Butterfly stays folded when you carry it. The pad is comfortable but the strap may not be as long as you prefer.

butterfly folded showing carry strap

To open the Butterfly you press the white release button on the handle and squeeze the fold button while pulling the stroller upward to an unfolded position.

The Bugaboo Butterfly comes in three colors:

  • Midnight Black
  • Forest Green
  • Stormy Blue

Kid Comfort

bugaboo butterfly front view of seat

The Butterfly has a cushioned, plush seat. It is comfortable but in its fully upright position, it reclines at 51 degrees. This is similar to sitting in a recliner which may be fine for relaxing but too far back for sitting up and seeing the world. Almost every other stroller sits up a little straighter than this one ie. 55 to 71 degrees.

butterfly with foot rest extended

With the leg rest extended and the seat fully reclined, naps are pretty comfy even though it doesn’t lay completely flat like a bassinet.

This stroller tested about average when it comes to ride-smoothness which is a measure of vibrations and bumps felt in the seat.

canopy fully extended

With the sun canopy fully extended, kids’ upper bodies are fully protected. The canopy doesn’t extend over their legs or feet so you’ll still need sunscreen at times.

All 5 harness straps are padded, although the back of the buckle is not. Overall these are very comfortable harnesses.

There are no snack trays or cup holders included for kids.

The stroller seat is 22 inches high, which is higher than any other stroller we tested. It accommodates children up to 4 years old or 50 lbs. It is sized where most bigger kids will fit comfortably.

Quality and Safety

The Bugaboo Butterfly has a sturdy frame and solid part and material quality. The zippers and fasteners operate smoothly.

In our sound testing, the Butterfly had the lowest average decibel level:

The wheel treads are rubber and other wheel components are sturdy plastic. There is spring suspension on all four wheels.

Historically stroller designs have allowed for pinching , and in some cases amputation when fingers were caught in folding mechanisms or closing canopies.

We performed pinch testing by inserting a pencil in hinges and other places pinches were likely to happen. The Bugaboo scored 8 out of 10 in our pinch test. We found a few places where pinches could occur during the fold process.

All stroller manufacturers recommend that you keep children several feet away when folding and unfolding strollers.

The folding mechanism, including its buttons, has worked reliably for us.

Although the CPSC and AAP recommend never hanging anything on strollers because of the risk of tip-overs, we tested hanging a 12 lb diaper bag on the handles of empty strollers. The Bugaboo fell over backward as did about three-quarters of the strollers we tested.

Bugaboo strollers have a reputation for being high-quality and the Butterfly is no exception.

Bugaboo Butterfly vs Babyzen YoYo2

bugaboo butterfly front, babyzen yoyo2 back

Both the Bugaboo Butterfly and Babyzen YoYo2 are easy to push, maneuver and steer.

The Butterfly is truly a one-hand fold whereas the YoYo2 requires two hands to start the folding process and is a bit complicated even after that.

See our full comparison of the Butterfly and YoYo 2 .

The YoYo 2 is 2.5 lbs lighter than the Butterfly and is slightly more likely to be accepted by airlines to carry on aircraft.

The Butterfly has about 50% more space in its underseat basket, but it doesn’t have a small-item pocket like the YoYo2.

We prefer the seat recline mechanism, brake operation, harnesses and buckle operation of the Butterfly over the YoYo 2 .

In our testing, the Bugaboo had a higher overall score. See our full Babyzen YoYo2 Review . And see our full comparison of the Butterfly vs YoYo 2 .

Bugaboo Butterfly vs Joolz Aer

bugaboo butterfly front, joolz aer back

Both of these strollers receive our buy recommendation and scored in the top 3 out of 20 along with the Zoe Tour+. Choosing one over the other comes down to preference.

See our full comparison of the Aer and Butterfly here.

The Joolz is 13.4 lbs vs the Butterfly’s 16.1 lbs. The Joolz Aer folds to just 1.8 cubic feet which is a tad smaller than the Butterfly’s 2.0 cubic feet. Neither are guaranteed to be accepted by airlines to fit in the overhead bin, although both qualify for some airlines.

Both strollers have excellent folding operation and maneuverability, although the Joolz Aer scored slightly higher in both categories. See our full Joolz Aer Stroller Review .

The Bugaboo has a bigger storage basket while the Joolz has a nicer brake system and a small storage pocket that the Butterfly doesn’t have.

The Butterfly’s seat recline mechanism is faster and easier to use, as well as its harness adjustment.

The Joolz includes a travel bag and rain cover in the base package while the Butterfly comes with no included accessories.

Neither stroller has cup holders, snack trays or parent consoles without extra purchases.

The one second folding mechanism makes it easy to use the stroller on the go. And the great suspension enables the Butterfly to go over any bumps – ensuring that your child has a comfortable ride no matter where you are!

One second fold

The Bugaboo Butterfly features a one second fold, which is its main selling point. This makes it easy to transport and store, as you can just fold it up and put it in the car or closet. The underseat basket also can be accessed from both sides, so you can bring everything with you when you go out for the day. And finally, the price point makes it an affordable option for anyone looking to travel with their child in a safe and easy way.

Bugaboo Butterfly Vs Joolz Aer

The Joolz Aer stroller has a more chilled look, with a brown leather handlebar in all colors except the black. It comes in more colors, although Bugaboo may add more color choices over time to the Butterfly. The butterfly has way more of a recline than the Aer, and it also features a hide-away 5-position legrest for a super comfortable ride! The recline on the Butterfly is much easier to work with, since in order to work the recline mechanism on the Joolz Aer, the recline can only be adjusted by first opening the zippered panel. This means that the seat can’t be adjusted unless your child is sitting forward in it. The Joolz Aer folds a little bit smaller and it weighs nearly 3 pounds less than the Butterfly, just 13.4 lbs, while the Butterfly is 16.1 lbs. The under-seat basket on the Butterfly is bigger than the one on the Aer, and the canopy is also. Both of these strollers have incredible collapsible folds. Unlike the Joolz Aer, the Butterfly comes with the legrest - no need for a separate purchase. We love the little pocket on the back of the Joolz Aer. It’s the perfect place to keep keys, a phone, or other little items inside of.

Bugaboo Butterfly Vs Bugaboo Dragonfly

The Bugaboo Dragonfly, Bugaboo’s latest stroller, weighs 17.4 - 21.8 Ibs, which means it’s slightly heavier than the Butterfly that weighs 16.1 pounds. If compact and lightweight are priority, the Butterfly wins out. But if you’re interested in a Bugaboo stroller with a bassinet and a reversible seat, the Bugaboo Dragonfly is the most lightweight option from the other Bugaboo full-size stroller options. It’s a mid-size stroller, not as lightweight or compact as the Butterfly. Sort of a hybrid stroller, it compares to the Fox and the Lynx, but it’s not as heavy and won’t take up nearly as much space, so its compact like the Butterfly in that aspect. One feature that’s very common on Bugaboo strollers is the face to parent mode, and the Butterfly doesn’t offer that. The Dragonfly comes with a bassinet that can even fold with the stroller. The Dragonfly also has bigger wheels than the Butterfly, making strolls through grassy areas or gravel paths a walk in the park. The Dragonfly is more expensive than the Butterfly; the Dragonfly is $899.00 and the Butterfly is $449.00.

Bugaboo Butterfly Vs Babyzen YOYO

The Bugaboo Butterfly is about 3 pounds heavier than the YOYO, but it has a sturdier push. The backrest on the YOYO sits more upright than the Butterfly, which has more of a reclining position, and your child ends up either leaning back or sitting forward. Butterfly has a one-handed open and close, and a larger basket and basket weight capacity. However the YOYO has a zip pocket in the back, which is very convenient, and it also comes with way more color options than the Butterfly. The t has a one-step collapsible fold, compared to the YOYO’s 2-step fold, but the YOYO folds more compact, and is more likely to fit in an overhead bin on the plane. The Butterfly folds with all wheels down, unlike the the YOYO where there are two wheels on top and two on bottom when folded. When its cold out and you're using a footmuff, you'll have to take it off the stroller to fold the stroller if you're using a Butterfly. If you've got a YOYO, then you'll be able to simply fold the stroller with the footmuff inside. They’re both priced at $449.

The Best Travel Strollers for Your Summer Adventures

I love travel strollers. I test strollers as a part of my job , but whenever I'm not testing something new, I switch to these fantastic, lightweight strollers, even if I'm not traveling! They've become my go-to everyday strollers since my kid turned 1 and could face forward on our walks. They're quick to fold and easy to throw in the trunk of my small sedan, and I can carry 'em with one hand while balancing my kid and unlocking the door with the other. They're great for actual travel too. Whether you're on a road trip or a plane ride, these lightweight travel strollers are the ones I love most after weeks of testing.

Nuna TRVL stroller

Best Overall

No stroller is as easy to fold as the Nuna TRVL . Just the other day a fellow mom asked me what stroller it was, saying she'd never seen a stroller fold like that before. The 14.6-pound Nuna quickly folds forward onto itself into an upright position, sticking the belly bar in the air for you to grab and go, whether you're in the airport or piling into the car after a day at the zoo. It comes with a travel bag, which you can stuff into the lower storage basket and then use when checking the stroller onto a plane. Speaking of, the storage basket’s sides are a little low, but it was a perfect size to fit my favorite diaper bags .

I really love this stroller for the hand fold. I used to live in an apartment with a staircase between me and the rest of the world (my car! the street! any useable sidewalks!) and having a lightweight, easy-to-fold stroller made getting out of the house or coming home from a walk so much easier. For my next little one, I'm buying Nuna's car seat and using this system from day one, since Nuna's TRVL line is compatible with its car seats . It offers a smooth ride even with the lightweight frame, though you do have to look out for big bumps on the sidewalk.

13.6 pounds without handlebar, 14.6 with the handlebar. Comes with a travel bag.

Zoe Tour Stroller

Best Budget Travel Stroller

The Zoe Tour V2 stroller has a lot of what I like about the Nuna, with a slightly worse fold and not as nice of a finished folding position. But it's $200 cheaper! It also comes with cup holders for both parent and baby, and even a little snack bowl for my kid (these are so often extra upgrades you have to pay for on other strollers). You do have to choose either the belly bar or the kid cup and snack holders—you can't have both. The belly bar is handy to lift the stroller with when folded.

The Tour V2 looks nice, though the materials feel a little rough and the build doesn't feel as sturdy. But the seat was still plenty comfy for my kid, and this compact stroller was easy to maneuver around. It's the lightest stroller I have tested and recommend, though the difference isn't that noticeable compared to other strollers that weigh between 13 to 15 pounds. You can also buy car seat adapters from Zoe to make the Tour V2 compatible with car seats from Graco, Chicco, Nuna, and others.

13.4 pounds. Comes with a parent drink holder, baby drink holder, and baby snack bowl.

Best Carry-On Stroller

Most planes will make you check your stroller at the gate. The ones that won't require a stroller within carry-on dimensions; many travel strollers fold too long and wide to fit perfectly. But the Silver Cross Jet 5's folded position looks like a piece of luggage, folding down to 10 x 14.5 x 24.5 inches with a handle sticking straight up like on a traditional carry-on. You can lug it around like luggage when folded, which is super handy when you let your toddler run wild so they nap on the plane. It has a cover to make it look more suitcase-like too. It's still a few inches larger than carry-on luggage—most airlines are looking for 8 or 9 inches by 15 and 22 inches for overhead bin luggage—but the Jet 5 might honestly pass for a carry-on when you wheel it past the flight attendant. You'll need to pop the handle off to fit it in the overhead compartment, which is easy to do.

The build materials are fantastic and the stroller is sturdy, but I did find this one more challenging to unfold than any other stroller I've tested. You have to snap the supports together and while they have handles, my small hands struggled to snap them into place while holding the stroller up. It's easier with two people, but even my husband found it difficult. There’s a seat that reclines into a bassinet-like mode with an included piece of fabric to keep the baby in place, but it didn’t feel secure enough for me to want to use with a newborn.

15.9 pounds. Comes with a travel cover and rain cover.

Doona Stroller

Best for Infant Travel

Any trip you're taking with an infant will require a car seat. That's true for road trips, air travel, quick Ubers from your hotel, or even just going home to the hospital (baby's first big trip home!). So why deal with a stroller and a car seat when you can have two in one? The Doona Car Seat & Stroller had me kicking myself that I didn't try it sooner. I was so stressed out trying to make a car seat and stroller pair on a budget, and I should have just bought this all-in-one for the early days and then bought a real travel stroller when my kid grew out of it. Another idea for kid number two!

The Doona is 17 pounds, which isn't light once the baby is in there, but it doesn't feel too heavy. It's easy to switch from stroller to car seat mode once you get the motion down to click the legs back up or out again. The Doona's seat and handle are a little low compared to normal strollers, so tall parents might not like it as much, but it's a great pick to go from car to airport to plane and back again without needing more than one gadget. Just remember—infants can't be in a car seat for more than two hours at a time.

17 pounds. Comes with a car seat base.

Best for Taller Kids

The Bugaboo Butterfly is like the Nuna TRVL with a similarly easy fold, but the seat is a little taller and my 70th-percentile-height 2-year-old has plenty of headroom when he's sitting in it (and room to grow into it too). I like that the extendable canopy is larger, giving my son better coverage when we're on a day trip to the zoo or walking around the park on a sunny afternoon. My kid doesn't like to wear hats, so I'm dependent on my stroller's canopy to protect his poor little head. The Bugaboo's frame doesn't feel as sturdy as the Nuna TRVL though.

It has a slightly shorter, more compact fold than Nuna's strollers, almost perfectly hitting carry-on luggage size. It's still a little wide— 17 inches when carry-on luggage usually can only be 14—but it has a better shot than most other strollers. It's rated to be IATA (International Air Transport Association) compatible, so it should fit in most overhead compartments. Bugaboo also has adapters to make this stroller work with popular infant car seats from Maxi Cosi, Graco, Cybex, and others. The Butterfly has a carry strap rather than a handle when folded, which is fine but not quite as convenient to grab—it often got stuck inside the stroller for me. You can also grab the handle but avoid the center button.

16 pounds. Comes with a rain cover.

★ Easier fold, smaller canopy: The Nuna TRVL LX ($550) also has more headspace for bigger kids like the Bugaboo Butterfly. The Nuna has a softer seat and I find the fold a little easier , but the Bugaboo offers a better canopy and is slightly more compact.

Thule Shine stroller

A City Stroller I'd Travel With

This is not a travel stroller. The Thule Shine ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) is a city stroller, meaning it's a little more compact than your usual everyday stroller, but still has all the capabilities of a full-size stroller. It has a toddler seat that can face both inward and outward and works with third-party car seats with adapters (sold separately).

That said, I like it for travel since it's much smaller than other traditional strollers, like the Uppababy Vista V2 or the Nuna Mixx Next, while still packing similar features. Thanks to the adjustable handlebar, it wasn't too short for my 6'3" dad, and it folds compact enough to almost pass for a travel stroller. It's super easy for city strolling thanks to its slim size and would be a fun stroller to bring on a longer trip where you'll be walking a lot. I'd happily tote it around Europe for a few weeks if I ever get the guts to take my kid on such a long flight. You'll have to check the Thule Shine and it doesn't come with a travel bag, but Thule sells one ($80) . Thule also has a rider board ($130) for older children to hop onto, letting this stroller easily transform into a double stroller. The rider board can get in the way when folding, but it's easy to remove when you aren't using it.

21.6 pounds. Comes with a rain cover.

Honorable Mentions

There are a lot of strollers out there. Here are a few more I like but aren't my top recommendations for one reason or another.

Joovy Kooper for $200 : This stroller is the cheapest I've tested, and I like that it comes with a full snack tray—something you won't find in almost any other travel stroller. It folds down flat rather than upright.

Colugo The One for $395 : This is a fine stroller with similar features to the above picks, but I like the Zoe Tour V2 better for the price, or I'd rather pay $50 more for the Nuna TRVL. That said, Colugo has great stroller accessories I've used with non-Colugo strollers.

Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 for $430 : This is another city stroller like the Thule Shine, but its nearly flat fold reminds me of a travel stroller. It comes with a car seat attachment that works with many popular car seat makers, so it's a great pick if you want something to work with a car seat right away and still has a great, lightweight fold. It has fantastic wheel suspension, similar to a jogging stroller but with much smaller wheels.

Thule Spring for $400 : This stroller reminded me of the Baby Jogger with its three-wheel design and nice suspension, but folds a lot taller and thicker. It does stand up on its own if you put the handle at a middle height, which is nice. It's touted as a compact stroller for a reason—it's not lightweight or travel-friendly like our other picks. But it still has a nice size and handling if you want something more compact for everyday use.

What to Look for in a Travel Stroller

Shopping for a stroller can be intense. They're not a small investment, and you want them to last until your kid grows out of them (usually once they hit 50 to 55 pounds). If you're trying to pick a travel stroller in a pinch, or are feeling overwhelmed by the options, here are some guidelines that can help.

  • Is there a five-point harness? Five-point harnesses are the standard for securing your baby in the stroller via the straps. Every pick we recommend above has one. This is a feature you want and should be included.
  • Do you need car seat compatibility? If you're traveling with an infant, you'll either need a bassinet mode or the ability to connect your car seat to the stroller. You can DIY a travel system by pairing any stroller with a compatible car seat. Many strollers we recommend have car seat attachments you can buy that work with popular brands, but some aren't so flexible. (Uppababy's car seats only work with its strollers.)
  • Do you want a travel pram? A travel pram or bassinet is the lie-down flat mode that allows newborns to lie on their back while you walk. It's a nice mix-up from always being in a car seat—especially since infants can't stay in a car seat for more than two hours at a time. I haven't liked most bassinet modes I've tried on travel strollers since they feel a little flimsy and not as secure as I'd want an infant to be, but we're testing more soon and will update this guide with more recommendations.
  • Are these umbrella strollers? There's a mixed category of strollers sometimes called lightweight, travel, or even umbrella strollers. Umbrella strollers are less popular and are known for their rounded umbrella-like handle. This guide focuses on more general travel strollers, but we plan to test a few of these.
  • Do you need a double stroller? If you have two kids, you might be wondering if you're screwed. You're not! If I had two kids, I'd get a stroller I can add a rider board to, like the Thule Shine (if one of my kids is old enough to ride it). If not, the Zoe Twin V2 ($530) is a double stroller version of the Tour V2, and is a great price for two kids (and can still use Zoe's infant car seat attachment).
  • Can you bring it on the plane? Many major airlines, like American Airlines and British Airways, require you to gate-check strollers, which means you can still use them at the airport, but can't put them in overhead space. Some airlines like United, Emirates, and Virgin Atlantic allow a travel stroller (often called a “collapsible stroller”) as carry-on luggage as long as it fits the size requirements of carry-on luggage, which is usually around 8 x 14 x 22 inches. None of the travel strollers I've tested so far fit into these size constraints, but the Bugaboo Butterfly and Silver Cross Jet 5 have a compact size when folded that gets closer than most (as long as you remove the Jet 5's handle, that is).

Our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have reviewed more than 40 strollers over the course of the past five years and for this story, we curated strollers that can fit in tiny spaces (some in the airplane overhead) and those that rank high for ease of folding . Separately, we have a list of lightweight strollers that will help you tackle the toddler years with your sanity intact, and some of those are great for travel, too. But the travel strollers below have an additional focus on being compact and folding quickly so you can move like a travel ninja.

We called this a "first-rate folding stroller" when we named this a Good Housekeeping Family Travel Award winner. It doesn't sacrifice comfort for compactness , so expect the usual Bugaboo high-quality fabric, deep seat, real sunshade (no skimping on sun protection here!) and extendable leg rest, just in a more tiny, adorable form that's easy to take along on trips.

One tester mom of a toddler geeked out about the fold, specifically. "The button to fold it is on the handle, so you just push down and it collapses nearly instantly. Our regular stroller requires ducking down and pushing a lever," she said. "Also, the glide of the Butterfly is comparable to much larger strollers. I can push my son uphill easily, with one hand!"

The folded Butterfly stands up by itself, great if you need it to sit while you check bags or load the car. But our Lab experts note that unfolding the Butterfly takes some finesse and practice — you shake it out and lock in place before you can set your kid inside. We like the carry handle that lets you sling the folded stroller over your shoulder, as shown in the picture.

If you want this to carry a newborn in a car seat you can buy a car seat adaptor for the Butterfly. But it only works with select brands including Bugaboo, Nuna, Maxi-Cosi and Cybex.

If you're only taking one big vacation and don't plan to travel often, you might want a no-drama lightweight stroller that's priced under $100 . This little 3D Mini might cost the same as checking a piece of luggage each way, and at just 11 pounds it's easy to handle on a trip.

The basket is small — an average-size diaper bag is too big to fit down there — but there's a zippered parent console that holds two drinks. It's got a reasonable sunshade, and the seat can lean back. There's no seat padding, nor is there springy suspension for the five-inch plastic wheels. It's built for the convenience of getting toddlers and young preschoolers around flat pedestrian areas, and it does that just fine.

The 3D mini folds long, to the size of a traditional umbrella. (Get it? That's why they call this style an "umbrella stroller.") It doesn't stand up when folded — like with an umbrella, you have to prop it against a wall or a car, or lay it down, say in your car's trunk, or carry it in one hand, which is made easy by its light weight.

Not only does this weigh less than 15 pounds but its molded-rubber wheels can tackle a sandy beach path. Our tester did just that, saying, "We took the risk and rolled this along a nature trail in Puerto Rico and it did great." It won't tackle deep sand, though. For that you'll want a beach wagon . But the City Tour 2 is smooth-rolling on plenty of terrain and of course smooth on city streets, too.

This is a comfy choice with a deep seat that reclines almost flat, a wide calf rest plus a decent sun-protective canopy. The fold is easy and starts with squeezing a button on the handle. But when folded this is not as small as some others; it will not fit in an airplane overhead. It also can not stand up while folded. Use the carry bag, included, to gate-check this at the airport.

The handle sits just under 40 inches tall, making it a little low for tall parents. If you want a Baby Jogger stroller that holds an infant car seat, the brand's newer City Mini Air can hold a Baby Jogger or Graco model. But it's about nine pounds heavier and more of a full-size stroller than a travel option.

Colugo The Compact

The Compact

Lots of the choices on our list are great for airplane trips because of their fold and compact size. But if you fly often — as in to and from grandparents four or five times a year — we like that The Compact can be carted around several ways.

It's important because toddlers hop in and out of their stroller all the time in the airport. Use the carry strap on the back to sling this over your shoulder when you're on a moving walkway, with one arm holding your kid. Or put the stroller in the included backpack-style bag so it's easy to carry your kid and wear the stroller on your back as you step onto the plane, where the stroller can fit in most overhead bins. (If the flight crew says the overheads are full, the bag makes it easy to gate-check.)

When we named this a Good Housekeeping Parenting Award winner, we called out some of the other great features: a more generous basket than most compact strollers; a parent cupholder (because caffeine ); and a rain cover in case it's pouring when you step outside. Our one issue is that this is not a choice for a newborn; your baby has to be at least 6 months old to ride in this.

Read Our Review : Is a Colugo Stroller Worth It?

TRVL

If you're taking a young baby and don't want skimp on anything, this comfy, well-made compact stroller comes with a long list of amenities including a carry bag, a magnetic buckle so you can quickly snap your baby in place, plus a no-rethread harness so it's easy to adjust the shoulder-strap height as your child grows.

You can use the TRVL from birth because the seat reclines fully. You can also turn it into a Nuna travel system with the lightweight Nuna PIPA infant car seat, sold separately, without needing any extra adaptor (the car seat rests against the bumper bar).

All-wheel suspension helps this roll more like a full-size stroller. The basket can't hold as much as a few other picks on this list. But fans of the TRVL rave about the fold, which can be executed with just one hand while you hold your baby in your other arm. When folded it stays standing up on its own. Note, however, that it's just a few inches too big to fit in an airplane overhead bin, so plan to gate-check this stroller.

UPPAbaby Minu V2

Minu V2

Another Parenting Award winner, we've said this is "a perfect balance between a convenient compact and a sturdy full-size stroller." We think it's a great travel stroller for a toddler because of the extendable sun canopy, leatherette bumper bar you can use to hang a few toys and the lower basket that can hold up to 20 pounds . Swap the bumper bar for a snack tray , sold separately, if that will keep your toddler happier. If you're less concerned with getting something tiny and more interested in having a relatively compact stroller with all the features of a larger model, this might be your pick.

If you use this in an airport you will have to gate-check it; it won't fit in the plane's overhead. You can buy the UPPAbaby Minu carry bag separately. The Minu's small, self-standing fold means it takes up very little room in your home or hotel room. Tall parents will appreciate that the handle sits over 40 inches from the ground.

AER+

Testers have loved this tiny stroller for taking trips. "The one-handed push-button fold is a notable feature — it’s a game-changer!" one told us. We put it in our most recent Family Travel Awards , where we noted it's compact enough to fit in a plane's overhead storage. The shoulder strap for easy transporting is elastic, which one tester found a little odd, saying, "It feels weird to carry a sizable object by an elastic strap," but it works!

"The Aer+ has a decent sized sun shade for being a compact stroller," another tester said. Nothing on it is huge, and there's no cupholder or bumper bar, but that keeps it lighter than 14 pounds. The price is on the high side, but it does come with a travel pouch and the brand offers a 10-year limited warranty. (You have to register your product for it to be in place.)

Chicco Liteway

Liteway

Little travelers who are beyond the baby stage do well with an umbrella-style stroller like this one that gives them a place to sit when they need a break but does not cost parents much cash. Mesh sides provide airflow when you're visiting warm places and rear suspension provides a smoother ride than the truly cheap sling-style models that are built more like toys. Because it's got such a lightweight aluminum frame the weight limit for the Liteway is 40 pounds while others on this list go up to 50 pounds.

The handle is two grab handles versus one long bar. Because this is umbrella-style, it has a long, thin fold that has to be rested on the ground or against something. You engage the fold with your foot rather than your hand, kicking up near the basket and stepping down on a lever at the side. The seat cushion is machine washable and it comes with a parent cupholder. It's ideal for preschoolers, including 4- and 5-year-olds. It's not for a baby younger than 6 months and does not take an infant car seat.

Munchkin Sparrow

Sparrow

It's all about the fold! The Sparrow folds into the neatest little 15" x 14" rectangle and tucks into its own carry case. Not only will it fit in an airplane overhead but we can imagine a bunch of other travel scenarios for this: tucked into a drawer in your hotel room or cruise ship cabin, at your feet as you ride the train around Disneyland, on your shoulder while you hold your child and ride an escalator.

To get that small it has a lot of flexible joints and tiny wheels. Also, the Sparrow weighs less than 13 pounds. The combination can make the Sparrow feel more rickety than others on our list. It performed well enough rolling around smooth New York City sidewalks but, especially if you have a lightweight baby inside, it bounces over cracks, bumps and curbs. Fortunately, if you're mostly steering this through airports or through a theme park, you should be good to go.

A few other notes: The handle is low (not great for tall parents) but the seat is high (so a toddler is not leg-draggingly close to the ground). The basket is tiny and blocked by two bars, so it can't hold very much, maybe just a stroller blanket and water bottle. The tiny sunshade flap is minimal.

Evenflo Gold Otto

Otto

If you love the idea of a self-folding stroller that collapses at the touch of a button while you're holding your baby in your arms, this model does just that and at a nice price, too. Getting in and out of vehicles is easy because the Otto, when folded, can be self-standing or carried around by its bumper bar. You can use an Evenflo car seat with this without any separate adaptor, and the molded rubber wheels have suspension in the front.

There is a gap between the seat and the canopy that lets airflow in but also allows a kid to squirm around and see you, which can either be a pro or con. We noticed online reviewers writing that the wheels squeak, which we did not experience in our Lab tests but seems to be an issue during real-world use. It comes with a parent cupholder. Note that the Otto is heavier than most of the other single strollers on our list but still weights less than 20 pounds. Because it's fairly robust it has a slightly higher weight limit compared to other travel strollers, up to 55 pounds.

Other travel strollers we recommend

linebreak

Aside from our picks above, here are some others that performed well in our Lab tests and with our consumer testers:

Best double travel stroller: Zoe The Twin V2

• This popular compact double is frequently sold out, but worth checking on if you need to take two kids on vacay. We've called this stroller " t he best double stroller for Disney " based on testers' real-world experiences. It meets the Disney park size requirements but weighs less than 20 pounds so it's not too tough to schlep on and off transport, plus it stands up when folded so it's easy to set it down and pick it up again without having to lean the stroller on something. Each seat has a large canopy (so important for long, sunny outings!), separate reclines so either kid can lean back when needed and bumper bars for toys and to help keep preschoolers from leaping out if they spot Mickey.

Best car seat stroller combo: Doona

• Nothing else comes close to being an ideal car seat and stroller combo for travel with a baby. The Doona is an infant car seat for a vehicle, then you pop the wheels out and stroll with it. No need to travel with both a car seat and a stroller since this is a two-in-one. "Now I tell every mama that she needs this," said one tester who started traveling with her baby in the Doona at 2 months old. Because it's only for toddlers up to 35 pounds and 32 inches tall, most families outgrow it by their child's second birthday. Read our full Doona Car Seat and Stroller Review .

The original square-fold travel stroller: CYBEX Libelle Pockit

  • Cybex pushed the travel-stroller category when it came out with a Pockit stroller that folds into a neat square . The latest version is the Libelle which, when folded, is just 12.6" x 7.9" x 18.9". And yet, unfolded, it can hold a Cybex infant car seat, sold separately. It comes in an array of colors though some of them will add to the price.

a family on vacation with their baby in the babyzen yoyo, a good housekeeping pick for best travel stroller

Best small-space travel stroller : Babyzen YOYO2 (pictured)

• We recommend this stroller for city parents or anyone who lives in a small spac e because of its compact size. It travels well, too. "We took it on a trip to Australia and it was so easy to travel with," a tester told us. Folded, this 13.5-pound stroller can be worn over your shoulder with the carry strap, and it comes with its own carry bag. Buy the $180 bassinet to use it from birth.

How we test the best travel strollers

a good housekeeping expert tests to find the best travel strollers

We test strollers both in the Good Housekeeping Institute Labs and in real-world conditions. For travel strollers, we ask consumer testers to take a model on a trip and report back on how easy the stroller made their journey.

In the past five years we've tested more than 40 strollers, looking at a dozen factors including stroller weight, ease of fold, size of stroller when folded, whether it comes with a travel bag, size of the sunshade and basket, whether the seat can recline for rest and more. We roll strollers along varied terrain and time how long it takes to assemble strollers out of the box.

We offer many stroller guides, including a list of the Best Jogging Strollers and the Best Stroller Wagons .

What to consider when shopping for a travel stroller

linebreak

✔️ Just how tiny do you need it to fold? If you want to roll your stroller right onto the plane and throw it in the overhead bin, look for a travel stroller that promises to fit up there. The International Air Transport Association suggests that carry-on luggage not be larger than 22'' x 18'' x 10".

✔️ A carry bag makes a nice backup plan if you're flying. If your stroller is supposed to fit in the overhead but the plane is too full, having a carry bag lets you easily gate-check it. Plenty of families, including many of our Lab experts, actually prefer to gate-check their stroller. You roll your child to the gate, wait until boarding, then fold and bag the stroller and have airline personnel put a tag on it so you can pick it up on the jet bridge when the plane lands, allowing you to stroll your child to baggage claim.

✔️ Check the Disney Park requirements , if you're going there. Unfolded, your stroller should be no larger than 31 inches wide and 52 inches long for a day at one of the parks.

✔️ Pay attention to age grading. If your infant is still only a few months old, they will be potentially unsafe in a stroller for ages 6 months+. If you'll be traveling with a newborn, look for a travel stroller that works from birth or that accommodates your infant car seat riding on top of it. At any age, know your child's current weight and height, and read the requirements specific to your stroller to ensure it's appropriate.

✔️ What happens when it folds? We like a stroller that can stand while folded, because you can set it and forget it while you deal with other travel and packing hassles. However, sometimes an umbrella fold, which is long and skinny, is nice for road trips when you have a tightly packed car. You can almost always wedge an umbrella stroller in there! Watch videos online to see how travel strollers fold and how you are expected to carry one in its folded position.

✔️ We like a canopy. We're nuts about sun protection (see our best sunscreens for kids ) and that's why all of our picks have at least some sunshade. We do not recommend one of the ultra-cheap sling-type strollers lacking any sun visor. But not all canopies are equal: Some extend far out, some have mesh panels for ventilation and many large canopies have peekaboo windows that let you easily peer down and see how your kid is doing. Some sunshades make noise as you move them in and out and some are silent. Finally, some are made of UPF 50+ sun-blocking fabric, which is preferable.

There are many things you will not get in a travel stroller that you would get in a big, full-size stroller. A compact travel stroller won't have a huge basket because it must fold down small. It won't have large, heavy wheels either, which means it will not roll as smoothly as a stroller with robust tires . However, if you're using the travel stroller with a toddler or preschooler, their weight will help anchor the stroller to the ground and make it less jumpy as you push it over bumps. A travel stroller is essentially small, nimble wheels on a compact frame — something that's easy to take on vacations.

Non-Toxic Strollers (Without Flame Retardants & PFAS) for 2024

' src=

By Abbie Davidson

Updated on April 02, 2024

While you may not be able to find a stroller that is 100% free from all synthetic material, there are actually plenty of high-quality strollers on the US market that are free from the “worst” toxicants, such as PFAS and flame retardants.

I’ve done a lot of research on the topic in order to bring you the best non-toxic baby strollers that are not only safer for your children, but also come with lots of great reviews and features that make your life easier.

Below you’ll find non-toxic jogging strollers, umbrella strollers with UV protection, car-seat compatible strollers, and a lot more.

In a Nutshell:

On my hunt for non-toxic strollers, I prioritized brands that are free from PFAS and flame retardants.

There is a lot of info below about what to look for (and recommended brands), but here is a quick overview of some of the non-toxic stroller options on the market:

  • For a jogging stroller : Good news! Many of the brands below have options for non-toxic jogging strollers, including Bumbleride , Guava , and Chicco .
  • Most compact non-toxic stroller (when folded): Guava Roam
  • Best non-toxic stroller for large/growing families : Zoe Tribe
  • Most affordable non-toxic stoller: Chicco Lite Way Stroller ($110 at time of publication; only available at Target .)
  • Best for a full travel system (with stroller & car seat): Nuna (they have several travel systems) or Chicco Corso Primo ClearTex Travel System (for a more affordable option)
  • For non-toxic umbrella strollers : Most of the brands below offer options for lightweight, non-toxic umbrella strollers with canopies. Specifically, you may want to check out the Chicco Lite Way Stroller , the Nuna Trvl stroller , the Bugaboo Butterfly , and the Joolz Air+ .
  • Best non-toxic double strollers: Again, most of the brands below offer options for double strollers. The only ones that don’t have double strollers at this time are Guava and Bombi.

When it comes to certain consumer products, it’s relatively easy to find something that is 100% non-toxic, plastic-free, and made only from organic and natural materials.

That’s not the case when it comes to strollers. All strollers utilize quite a bit of plastic.

Unfortunately, all plastics do come with potential problems (the extent of which we still don’t know), but when they can’t be completely avoided, try not to fret.

What I suggest doing instead is prioritizing. Dodge the worst types of plastic when possible (such as PVC), and prioritize avoiding some of the worst chemical additives, such as flame retardants and PFAS.

Flame retardants used to be added to a lot of consumer goods, including furniture and children’s products (even though they don’t actually work to slow flames).

There are several different types of flame retardant chemicals, with some of the “worst” being polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDEs.

Generally, flame retardants are endocrine disruptors that are linked to things like:

  • Developmental delays
  • Fertility/reproductive problems

Before 2014, strollers sold in the US were required to pass flammability tests, which was difficult to do considering that many of the materials used (like polyurethane foam, for example) were easily flammable. This led manufacturers to add synthetic chemical flame retardants to their strollers.

When strollers became exempt from these requirements, many manufacturers kept using them anyway.

But in recent years, some states—such as California and New York—have started implementing more sweeping bans on flame retardants in certain types of consumer products, including ones made for babies and kids.

These state-based bans usually act as de facto national bans because manufacturers aren’t going to make different products for different states; they’re just going to change their processes across the board.

What this basically means for those of us in the United States is that although flame retardants have not been completely removed from strollers sold in the US, they’re largely on their way out!

An important note about flame retardants in the UK:

Unfortunately, as of late 2023, flame retardants are still required by law in the UK. This means that:

  • If you buy any stroller in the UK, it most likely contains flame retardants. This includes some of the brands below that are generally FR-free except when they’re shipped to the UK (such as Bumbleride).
  • If you buy a stroller from a UK/EU-based brand but have it shipped to the US, I would suggest reaching out to the brand before purchasing to make sure that the version of the stroller that you’re getting is free from flame retardants.

PFAS are similar to flame retardants in the sense that they used to be widely used in products like strollers, car seats, and lots of other consumer goods, but are now slowly being phased out.

These are the Teflon “forever chemicals” that are added to fabrics in order to make them resistant to water and/or stains.

PFAS exposure is linked to a wide range of health concerns, including:

  • Testicular, bladder, or kidney cancer
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Weakened response to vaccines
  • Reduced fertility
  • Obesity
  • Birth defects

Many companies are switching to PFAS-free treatments such as C0 or polyurethane. While these treatments may not be perfect (little is currently known about C0), I still believe that these options are safer than their PFAS-laden predecessors.

When shopping for PFAS-free strollers, you’ll want to look for brands that are completely free from all PFAS, not just a couple of them. There are literally thousands of different kinds of PFAS, and most of them are similar in terms of their potential health effects. So if you see a stroller brand advertise their treatments as “PFOA-free” or PFOS-free,” that should be a yellow flag. Those are just TWO types of PFAS, and it does NOT necessarily mean the product is totally PFAS-free.

On a related note, you may see some brands use the term “PFC-free.” This stands for perfluorinated  chemicals  (whereas PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances ). PFC is an older term that scientists have generally moved away from because it’s confusing, but it is still used sometimes. ( You can read more about this here. ) But the important thing to know is that “PFC-free” DOES refer to the entire group of chemicals. So if you see “PFC-free” on a stroller, you should be in good shape.

What About Durable Water Repellent (DWR)?

As you shop for strollers (or other types of products ), you’ll see that some products are treated with a DWR finish. This is what makes it waterproof or water-resistant.

This can be confusing because DWR treatments MAY or MAY NOT contain PFAS. There are different formulations of DWR; some of which are PFAS-free and others that are not.

Therefore, just be aware that if you see a product that advertises the use of DWR, you may want to clarify whether or not it uses PFAS.

PVC is one of the “worst” kinds of plastic . For strollers, it’s often used for thin plastic parts and those clear rain windows.

Vinyl chloride itself is linked to several kinds of cancer (especially for those who work with it in an industrial capacity and/or have been exposed via disasters like the East Palestine train derailment ), but it can also contain additional toxicants such as phthalates or heavy metals.

Ideally, you’ll want to look for “better” plastics, such as polyethylene. Or at least look for PVC that is explicitly free from things like phthalates, lead, and cadmium.

As I mentioned above, it’s impossible to completely avoid synthetics when buying a stroller. That said, here are some other chemicals you may want to try and avoid if you can:

  • Phthalates (which are endocrine disruptors and are used to soften plastics)
  • BPA and other bisphenols (which are also endocrine disruptors and are used to harden plastics)
  • Polyurethane foam

Another thing to note is that when it comes to certain chemicals like PFAS, there is always the risk of contamination.

Sometimes, PFAS can make their way into products via the manufacturing process, even if they were not added intentionally.

In my opinion, this is why we need more sweeping legislation in order to get these toxic chemicals out of our supply chains entirely… But that’s another topic for a different day.

There is essentially no way to know for sure if something is 100% PFAS-free unless you test it in a lab, which is really expensive. (And even these lab tests are imperfect, but again, I won’t get into that right now!)

The good news is that even if something is contaminated with PFAS, the amount of PFAS in the product is going to be much lower than it would be if it was intentionally-added.

That’s why our recommended non-toxic baby strollers are free from intentionally-added PFAS (and other toxicants).

With sustainability becoming more and more trendy each year, most companies are trying to implement more eco-conscious initiatives throughout their products and supply chains. This is, of course, an amazing thing!

However… it can also make things confusing.

In my research, I came across quite a few brands that have multiple eco-friendly features and processes in place, but are still using toxic chemicals like PFAS and/or flame retardants.

The only reason I bring this up is just to give you a gentle reminder not to be afraid to dig deeper and/or ask more questions from the brand in question if things are unclear.

I get it. Having a new baby is expensive. Strollers are expensive. And finding a stroller that fits all your criteria in terms of safety as well and functionality is no small feat.

So if you’re stressed out about not being able to afford a new non-toxic baby stroller, here are a few suggestions:

  • Search for secondhand strollers on platforms like GoodBuyGear , Rebelstork , and Facebook marketplace. If possible, try to get your hands on a stroller that was made before 2014 (since all strollers made before then contain flame retardants).
  • Also, check with the brand itself to see if they have any refurbished options. Many brands are implementing secondhand options in order to increase the circularity of their products.
  • Put your stroller on your baby registry so that someone else might buy it for you! 😉
  • Consider just getting organic accessories. For example, you might buy the Bumbleride organic cotton insert and just use it with whatever stroller you already have (if it fits). So even though you’re not getting the entire non-toxic stroller, you’re at least controlling the material that’s in direct contact with your baby.
  • Try not to worry too much. You can’t live a *perfectly* non-toxic life, and if buying your ideal stroller is just not going to happen, that’s okay. There are many other things you can prioritize that will make a positive difference for your child. The products you put on their skin, the food they eat, etc… There are many opportunities to decrease the environmental toxicants in your home, and it’s okay to prioritize according to what’s realistic for you.

The good news is that PFAS and flame retardants seem to finally be on their way out of consumer products. Many brands are switching to PFAS-free water/stain-resistant treatments such as C0, while others—such as Guava —are skipping or minimizing the extra chemical treatments altogether (which might be a good idea, considering that PFAS might actually be useless in preventing stains anyway).

This general trend toward phasing out PFAS is happening in part because of changing regulations, as well as consumer pressure.

And this means that brands are making changes often. Bugaboo , for example, just completed their PFAS phase-out in July of 2023.

So, with that being said, we are going to try and keep this guide updated as more brands get rid of these harmful chemicals. So, stay tuned!

In addition to being made with safe materials, your stroller has to work for you . Here are some other things to think about when it comes to your preferences, needs, and lifestyle:

Not every stroller works with every car seat. Some of the brands below sell their own car seat (or have partnered with a car seat brand) so that you can buy a whole set that will work together.

Others, however, sell car seat adaptors (separately), which are compatible with certain car seats and not others. So, before buying your stroller and/or car seat, be sure to check the details to make sure you can combine the products you’re planning to use together.

Consider the opened-up size as well as the folded-up size. Some double strollers are so wide that they don’t fit through all doorways. Some strollers fold up small enough that they can fit in airplane overhead bins.

So, think about your travel plans and day-to-day routines to make sure you get the right size stroller.

Pretty much every parent has experienced the frustration of trying to fold up a stroller with one hand while holding a crying kid in the other.

Many of today’s strollers have magical one-handed folding mechanisms, which is amazing. Consider whether or not this is a high priority for you.

If you’re planning on having more kids in the near future, you may want to get a stroller that can be expanded to fit your growing family. This might save you some money in the long-run. Zoe, for example, offers strollers that can hold up to four kids!

Also: will the stroller be used for a newborn, or mostly just toddlers/older kid(s)? This may influence what kinds of seats and features you need.

Many strollers have recommended weight limits, so ensure your child falls within the specified range. For newborns, look for strollers with a bassinet attachment or seats that recline fully for proper support. You may also want to look for adjustable features like seat recline positions and footrest height so that the stroller can grow with your child.

Other preferences and lifestyle factors you might want to consider are things like:

  • How much storage do you need? (And do you need cupholders and other little things like that?)
  • Will you be taking the strollers for runs? On trails? What kind of terrain do you plan on traversing with your kid in tow?
  • Will you be taking the stroller to Disney? They have limits on stroller size!

Standard strollers : Sometimes called “city” strollers or “everyday” strollers, these are your go-to, all-purpose strollers that are perfect for everyday use. They’re typically equipped with comfortable seats, storage baskets and diaper bag holders, and maneuverable wheels. Great for strolling around the park, running errands, or going on adventures with your little one.

Jogging strollers : If you’re a fitness enthusiast or love going for jogs, jogging strollers tend to have sturdy frames, large air-filled tires, and a suspension system to handle rough terrains.

Lightweight strollers: When it comes to convenience and portability, lightweight strollers are the champs. They’re compact, easy to fold, and lightweight (hence the name). Perfect for travel, quick trips, or navigating crowded spaces.

Umbrella strollers: Need something compact and fuss-free? Umbrella strollers are your answer. These lightweight strollers fold up like an umbrella and are easy to carry and store.

Travel system strollers: Travel system strollers are all about versatility. They consist of a stroller frame that can be used with an infant car seat. This means you can seamlessly transfer your sleeping baby from the car to the stroller without disturbing their dreams.

Double strollers: For families with twins or siblings close in age, double strollers are a game-changer. They come in different configurations—side-by-side or tandem (one seat in front of the other). Double the cuteness, double the fun, and double the joy of strolling together.

Alright, now let’s get to our recommended brands!

best non-toxic jogging strollers from bumbleride

Free from: PFAS, Fire Retardants (except when shipped to the UK), PVC, BPA, Phthalates, Polyurethane Foam, Chlorine, Vinyl, and Formaldehyde Options: All-Terrain , Double Stroller , Reversible Stroller & the Speed jogging stroller Price Range: $699-1,029

Bumbleride is definitely one of the best brands for non-toxic strollers that are free from all of the most concerning toxic chemicals, like PFAS, flame retardants, and PVC. The fabric they use is made of OEKO-TEX certified recycled PET.

Bumbleride strollers check a lot of boxes when it comes to performance as well. They’ve got hundreds of positive reviews and have earned the trust of conscious parents who need a stroller that’s not only safe but is also durable and easy to use in real life.

One example: Your Bumbleride stroller will still be able to hold up in the rain. To make it water-resistant, they use a PFAS-free durable water repellent (DWR) called C0. C0 is becoming very popular these days as a water/stain-resistant coating that is PFAS-free and approved by third parties like bluesign®, ZDHC, and OEKO-TEX.

Bumbleride has great options for non-toxic jogging strollers and all-terrain strollers. They utilize air-filled tires (instead of foam-filled) and all-wheel suspension, making these strollers a good choice for you if you live in an urban environment or want to be able to take your stroller out of the trails.

Even though most of their strollers can be used for jogging (pretty much all of them except for the Era Reversible Stroller), they have two options that are meant specifically for jogging : the Speed and the IRONMAN. These have a bunch of safety features, including things like a wrist strap to prevent runaways, a canopy for sun reflection, 360 swivel, full recline, and extra reflective elements (only the IRONMAN has the extra reflectors).

Their strollers have a bunch of other super useful features, too—like plenty of storage pockets , ergonomic handle trigger release with one-step fold/standing stow, and more.

They have a handy Stroller Comparison Chart , too, to help you easily see the difference between their options.

Bumbleride doesn’t make its own car seat, but its strollers are compatible with many of the popular car seat brands ( see here ). They’ve also partnered with Clek to bring you a car seat/travel system that works well with their strollers. (Just make sure you get the Thunder or Pitch Black colorway for the car seat, as those are the only ones that are PFAS-free at this time.)

Lastly, Bumbleride offers a ton of accessories to make your life easier, from car seat adaptors to a mini board for toddlers to ride on (!) , to a collection of organic cotton inserts to keep your baby warm and comfortable, and more.

They also make it easy to repair your stroller if you ever need to, with a range of replacement parts and a customer support team to help you out.

non toxic stroller from mockingbird

Free from:  PFAS, flame retardants, PVC, BPA, phthalates. Options:   Single-to-Double Stroller Price Range: $450

Mockingbird’s modular non-toxic strollers are also free from flame retardants, PFAS, and other potential toxins.

Equipped with an extendable UPF 50+ all-weather canopy , go-anywhere wheels mirror, and a generously sized basket that holds all the essentials up to 25 lbs, it’s no wonder why these strollers come with thousands of positive reviews from happy parents.

Plus, it’s got the one-hand fold!

You can easily switch between forward-facing and parent-facing modes. They offer a 2nd Seat Kit and a Riding Board , which means it can technically hold up to three little ones. They’ve also got an attachable bassinet option for newborns, car seat adaptor , and lots of other optional accessories like snack trays and more.

Mockingbird also did a bunch of testing for durability, too. They put the strollers under repeated impacts and 10,000 simulated sidewalk curb maneuvers to ensure they can withstand any knocks and bangs that may come.

Mockingbird also offers a 30-day trial and a generous limited lifetime warranty.

non toxic pfas free fr-free strollers from nuna

Free from:  PFAS, Flame Retardants, limits on VOCs Options:   Single strollers , lightweight/travel strollers , convertible/bassinet-ready strollers , reversible strollers , and travel systems Price Range : $500-1,200

Because of the fact that Nuna has figured out a way for their car seats to meet US flammability standards without added flame retardants , Nuna is a good option for full travel systems that include both non-toxic strollers and car seats.

Many of Nuna’s strollers and car seats are GREENGUARD Gold certified, which means they’ve been verified to be below a certain threshold when it comes to VOCs and other toxicants like phthalates. Although GREENGUARD doesn’t currently ban PFAS, Nuna has told me that their products are indeed PFAS-free.

They definitely have several different options to suit your growing family, including single strollers and convertibles.

Most of Nuna’s strollers come equipped with large baskets that can hold a lot, plus UPF 50+ rating canopies for sun protection. They have add-on accessories like snack trays, cup holders, travel bags, and. more.

They also use healthier fabrics for many of their liners and accessories—like organic cotton and TENCEL.

You can buy at: Modern Nursery | Crate & Barrel | Nunababy.com

non-toxic jogging stroller from guava

Free from: Flame Retardants, PFAS, PVC. Options: Roam Stroller (crossover/jogging stroller) Price Range: $650

Guava’s Roam non-toxic jogging stroller is GREENGUARD Gold certified, which means it’s been third-party verified to meet a certain set of standards when it comes to volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

This is definitely good news, but it doesn’t necessarily mean anything about flame retardants and/or PFAS. So, I reached out to Guava and they told me:

“We have avoided using waterproofing & stain-resistant chemicals to make sure the stroller doesn’t have PFAS or their newer substitutes. The stroller does not contain PFAS. The weather resistance of the polyester material is due to the tight weave and PU coating on the back. Please note it is not fully waterproof…water will bead up on it initially, but will absorb over time. However, this will not damage the material and it will dry out. For stain resistance, we’ve also avoided using chemicals. Rather, we have simply made the seat liner removable and washable for the inevitable spill.”

So, that’s obviously very good news that the Guava Roam Stroller is PFAS-free , but parents may want to bear in mind that it does not have an alternative water-resistant treatment added to it. This won’t be a big deal for most people, but it’s just worth noting.

It’s also worth pointing out that the Guava stroller is not free from polyurethane foam. The Guava team told me that the stroller comes with a FR-free polyurethane foam seat padding.

One of the main selling points of the Guava is that it has what they call “3D Nesting Fold™,” which means it  “folds 50% smaller than traditional joggers to fit even in small vehicles.”

Some other key features that joggers might be interested in, include:

  • Lock/unlock from the handlebar for quick transitions between walking and running.
  • Airless, rubber tires (so you don’t have to worry about punctures) and independent suspension for all types of terrain.
  • A “60-day Test Ride” policy, which means if you don’t love the stroller after you’ve tried it for 60 days, you can get a full refund.

You also have the option to buy extra accessory bundles, including a car seat adaptor , snack tray, rain cover, extra storage, and more.

non toxic strollers from chicco

Free from: Intentionally added fire retardants, PFAS, BPA, and phthalates. Options: Various full-sized strollers , jogging strollers , lightweight strollers , and double strollers . Plus they also have a frame stroller , which is a more affordable & lightweight option that fits a newborn’s car seat. Price Range: $110-400

I have to admit: this one kind of surprised me! But Chicco’s strollers are now free from both flame retardant s and PFAS .

(Car seats are a little different. If you get a Chicco car seat, make sure you get one of the ClearTex ones to ensure it’s FR-free. But none of their products have any added PFAS.)

One of the big selling points about Chicco is its wide range of options, as well as the fact that they’re available at big box stores like Target and Walmart !

They’ve got options for non-toxic umbrella strollers, jogging strollers, modular strollers , and ones that are car seat compatible.

If you want to go with a full travel set , I recommend checking out the Corso Primo ClearTex Travel System because that one comes with the ClearTex fabric (as well as other material safety features like GREENGUARD Gold certification and organic cotton inserts). It comes with an infant car seat that attaches to the stroller, but then you can switch the stroller around as your child grows. (It’s got a total of six configurations!) It’s also got extras like a one-hand fold, a zip-extend canopy, rear-suspension wheels, and lots of storage.

Note that not all of Chicco’s strollers are PVC-free . For more details, you’ll want to check the specifications on each stroller’s product page to see which parts contain PVC.

non toxic bassinet stroller from bugaboo

Free from: PFAS, Flame retardants (when sold in the US) Options: They offer a wide variety of strollers, including newborn , double , lightweight , all terrain , and more. Price Range: $1,300-2,198

This Netherlands-based brand offers more non-toxic strollers. Since they sell products around the world, whether or not they are free from flame retardants depends on the country. But Bugaboo did confirm with me that all products sold in the US are free from flame retardants.

Additionally, they told me that as of July 2023, all of their products are PFAS-free. (This may be important to know if you’re considering a secondhand Bugaboo stroller that was made/sold before that time.)

Bugaboo’s strollers are on the more expensive side, but they do have a lot of different options, including ones that have bassinets and reversible/convertible strollers.

One of the things that sets them apart from the other brands is how customizable they are in terms of fabrics and colorways!

pfas free flame retardant free stroller bombi

Free from: Flame retardants, PFAS, polyurethane foam. Options: Bēbee Lightweight Stroller Price Range: $200

Bombi’s strollers do not have added flame retardants or PFAS. They confirmed with me that they do not add durable water repellants of any kind to their strollers.

They only have one star offering, which is their Bēbee Lightweight Stroller (which is available in a variety of colors).

This is another non-toxic stroller that comes with a magical one-handed fold . It’s also got a bunch of other features, like ‘infinite recline,’ an extra large umbrella canopy (with UV protection), a 5-point safety harness, and lots of storage.

Plus, the fabrics are made almost entirely of recycled plastic bottles, a tree is planted with each purchase, and 1% of sales are donated to environmental non-profit organizations.

They’ve got several optional accessories, too, including a car seat adaptor , footmuff, snack tray, and more.

Note that not all of Bombi’s products are PVC-free. Their rain cover is made out of PVC.

pfas free strollers without flame retardants from joolz

Free from: Flame retardants, PFAS, phthalates, BPA Options: Hub+ everyday/city stroller , Day+ bassinet stroller, Aer+ lightweight stroller Price Range: $449-1,099

Joolz also has several everyday strollers that are free from PFAS and flame retardants.

Their Aer+ lightweight stroller is good for toddlers and kids. It’s got a 5-point harness, folds up easily and compactly, and is airplane-compatible.

The Day+ stroller is a good option for babies because it comes with a bassinet/carry cot that’s suitable for newborns. The Hub+ can also fit the bassinet but then can be converted to a toddler stroller afterward.

They’ve also got extra features and accessories like an extra-large sunhood/canopy, a bumper bar, storage baskets, option footmuffs, snack trays, and more.

They also offer a 10-year transferable warranty , which means if you hand the stroller down to another new parent, the warranty stays with the stroller.

They also plant a tree with each purchase.

best non-toxic strollers for big families from zoe

Free from: Flame Retardants, PFAS, BPA, Pesticides, Phthalates, Polyurethane Foam, Formaldehyde. Options: The Tour (everyday single stroller), The Traveler (lightweight single stroller), The Terra (jogging stroller), The Twin (double stroller), The Tandem (a single-file double stroller), The Trio (seats 3), and The Tribe (seats 4). Price Range: $249-649

Zoe is a really great option if you already have or planning on having a lot of kids. Most of their strollers can be adapted to either add or remove seats based on how many little ones you need to put in it. For example, you can turn The Tour single stroller into a double, or you can turn The Trio triple stroller into a quad!

In terms of materials, all of Zoe’s strollers are made without the most harmful chemicals like PFAS and flame retardants. For the plastic parts, they use recycled polyester, nylon, EVA, and food-grade polyethylene. Instead of PFAS, they use a 600D polyurethane-coated fabric to make the seat and canopy water-resistant.

Another one of Zoe’s main selling points is how lightweight they are. Their lightest weight ones (The Traveler and The Tour) are 12-13 lbs, and the heaviest one (The Tribe, which seats four) comes in at 32.2. lbs. The singles and doubles can also be folded using one hand.

They’ve got a lot of extras, too, like cupholders (for both parents and little ones), spacious storage baskets, reclinable seats, and expandable UPF 50+ canopies for sun protection. In terms of accessories, they offer add-ons like snack trays, extra storage compartments, carry-straps, all-terrain wheels, and more.

Many of their strollers do come with leatherette handles, but they are made with PU, not PVC. You can opt to replace those with snack trays if you want.

Lastly, most of their strollers are Disney-approved and meet all park requirements! (Except The Terra jogging stroller.)

If you need help deciding which stroller is right for you, you can check out their Comparison Chart and/or take their Stroller Quiz .

Unfortunately, they do not make a car seat at this time.

greentom eco-friendly stroller

Free from: Flame retardants, PFAS, BPA, phthalates, PVC Options: Greentom Classic , Carrycot , Reversible , 2-in-1 , 3-in-1 . Price Range: €279.00+

Greentom’s strollers are made to grow with your child from newborn to about four years old. They’re out of recycled materials, and the mattress is made out of OEKO-TEX and GOTS certified organic wool. They offer accessories like car seat adaptors and footmuffs, too.

Instead, of PFAS, Greentom uses a PU coating on their strollers to make them water-resistant.

Greentom is currently only available for purchase in Europe, but if you’re in the US, you can sometimes find one secondhand on a site like Good Buy Gear or Facebook Marketplace.

It comes with a Lifetime Warranty, too!

Here are some other strollers I researched to find out if they are PFAS/FR-free or not:

  • Britax/BOB : These two brands are owned by the same company. They are free of flame retardants, but are probably not free from PFAS. When I reached out to them to ask, they told me that they use a DWR finish, but refused to answer me about whether or not the finish uses PFAS.
  • Graco : As far as I can tell, Graco strollers are NOT free from PFAS or flame retardants.
  • Joovy : Joovy’s strollers are free from flame-retardants, BPA, and phthalates, but are not PFAS-free as of fall 2023.
  • MaxiCosi : Their PureCosi™ accessories are free from flame retardants, but it’s unclear or they contain PFAS and/or if any of their other products contain these chemicals. I emailed them to ask and they did not answer my question. They sent back a standard reply that literally said nothing at all about PFAS.
  • Mountain Buggy / phil&teds : These two brands are owned by the same company. I reached out to them and they told me that “The DWR treatment for the product may contain PFAS.”
  • Naturkind : They do have several sustainability initiatives, but their strollers are not PFAS- or flame-retardant-free. They also only ship to Europe at this time.
  • Silver Cross : It’s unclear whether Silver Cross strollers that are sold in the US have flame retardants and/or PFAS additives. I’ve reached out to them to ask and am still waiting to hear back.
  • Stokke: I really want to be able to recommend Stokke’s because they have high-quality products and lots of positive reviews. I know that at least some of their products are PFAS-free and instead use a “BIONIC FINISH®” which is PFAS-free finish. But unfortunately, they have not been clear with me about whether or not all of their strollers are free from PFAS and/or flame retardants. I may add them in the future if I can get a straight answer from them.
  • UPPABaby : Some of UPPABaby strollers are free of flame retardants, but not all. When I reached out, they told me that “We do not use PFAS on our car seats, seat liners, bassinet lining, or mattress covers” and that they “are committed to meeting new governmental regulations as they come into effect.” So, it sounds like they’re making progress, but I personally would like them to be more explicit…

Newborns don’t necessarily need a special stroller, but it’s important to consider their specific needs and safety. While some strollers are suitable for newborns, others may require additional accessories or attachments to provide proper support and comfort. Look for strollers that offer reclining seats or bassinet attachments, as these can provide a more secure and comfortable position for your newborn.

Additionally, ensure that the stroller has proper head and neck support, as well as a five-point harness for added safety (which most of the brands above offer). It’s always a good idea to consult the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations to choose a stroller that meets the specific needs of your newborn.

I hope this guide has helped you find a non-toxic stroller that fits your needs and preferences so that you and your new family can stroll with confidence!

Old bugaboo complicates US-Russia search for new arms deal

In their search for a new approach to arms control, Moscow and Washington are likely to soon encounter an old bugaboo: Russia s demand that the U.S. stop resisting limits on its missile defenses, which the Russians view as a long-term threat and the Americans see as a deterrent to war.

It is likely to arise when U.S. and Russian officials open a “strategic stability” dialogue Wednesday in Geneva — talks meant to lay the groundwork for future arms control and to reduce the risk of nuclear war. The talks are an area of modest promise in a relationship otherwise marred by disputes over ransomware attacks, Russian military intervention in Ukraine and other issues.

The Geneva session is not expected to yield a major breakthrough, but it likely will lead to additional talks.

The missile defense dispute has shot down past efforts to broaden the scope of arms control negotiations to include more than the traditional category of “strategic,” or long-range, nuclear missiles. Now it is among several disagreements — magnified by mutual distrust — that are likely to determine whether the world's two biggest nuclear powers can avoid a new arms race. At stake are what President Joe Biden has called "new and dangerous and sophisticated weapons that are coming on the scene now that reduce the times of response, that raise the prospects of accidental war.”

Biden appeared to be referring to emerging technologies such as hypersonic weapons, artificial intelligence and space weapons, which are being pursued not just by the United States and Russia but also China, whose rapid military advances have complicated the international arms control picture.

Biden may also have had in mind Russia's pursuit of exotic nuclear weapons, including a nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed cruise missile, as well as a nuclear-powered underwater drone. The Russians have said U.S. missile defenses compelled them to seek new weapons that could evade those defenses, and they recently offered to include these in future arms control negotiations. That gesture is seen by some as an opening for Washington to drop its opposition to negotiating limits on missile defenses.

When they met in Geneva on June 16, Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to begin mapping a new road to arms control by reopening the “strategic stability” talks that had faltered in the final months of the Trump administration. The idea is to explore possibilities for negotiating arms deals to succeed the New START treaty, which covers only long-range nuclear-armed weapons and is set to expire in 2026. Both sides want additional categories of weapons to be included in future deals, but they disagree how to do that.

The Russians have long insisted there can be no strategic stability without limits on defensive as well as offensive weapons. Their point man on arms control negotiations, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, has left no doubt that Moscow will insist that missile defense be part of a future arms control arrangement.

“Addressing the issue of missile defense has no alternative for us,” he told an international conference June 22 sponsored by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He said Russia cannot accept U.S. assurances that its missile defenses are meant only to shoot down rockets fired by North Korea or potentially by Iran.

“Sooner or later,” Ryabkov said, the U.S. will increase its defensive capabilities to the point where they will undermine the viability of Russian missiles. Therein lies the Russian concern about instability.

For its part, the Biden administration wants Moscow to agree to limit its so-called nonstrategic nuclear weapons, which are not covered by the New START treaty. Some arms control experts think this presents the possibility of a tradeoff — negotiations covering missile defenses as well as non-strategic weapons.

Before the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, marking an end to the Cold War, the conventional wisdom was that nationwide missile defenses would make the world less safe. The thinking was that by limiting such defenses, each side was kept vulnerable and thus less likely to strike first. President Ronald Reagan upset that convention in 1983 with his “star wars” vision of an impenetrable shield, based partly in outer space, to render ballistic missiles obsolete. The plan was abandoned after he left office but gave rise to new Russian fears about missile defense.

Russian concerns escalated in 2002 when President George W. Bush pulled the United States out the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, which had imposed missile defense limits on both countries. Bush called the treaty a relic and said U.S. security demanded better protection of the homeland against limited missile attacks.

Thus was born the current U.S. missile defense system, based mainly at Fort Greely, Alaska, starting in 2004. Its stated purpose is to protect U.S. territory from a potential North Korean missile attack. A smaller system based in Germany and intended to defend NATO territory against potential missile attack from Iran also is a source of tension with Moscow, which sees it as threatening Russia.

Proponents of U.S. missile defense point out that Russia has its own nuclear-armed missile defense of Moscow.

Prior to entering the White House, Biden was a critic of missile defense. In 2006 he derided the Bush administration's homeland missile defense system as a modern-day Maginot line — a defense that is confidently relied upon despite being unreliable. In 2001 he said the Bush administration had a “theological allegiance” to a missile defense system that he predicted would spark a new arms race.

Robert Soofer, a top nuclear and missile defense policy official throughout Donald Trump's four years as president, acknowledges that the Russians will want to include missile defense in any future arms negotiations.

“We should offer no concessions, but rather hear them out and explore ways to reassure the Russian side through transparency, technical cooperation where practical, and other confidence-building measures that U.S. missile defenses pose no threat to Russia's formidable nuclear forces,” Soofer said in congressional testimony June 9.
