‘Chariot 20’ Is Coming Next Month

Two decades later, Gavin DeGraw is revisiting the album that put him on the map. The pop-rock artist will release Chariot 20 on Sept. 27.

The reimagined record includes two previously unreleased tracks from the original  Chariot  sessions: “Get Lost” and “Love Is Stronger (Alright.)”

On Aug. 9, the multi-platinum singer-songwriter released an updated version of the track “Meaning.”

“This song was one of the main reasons why I chose to re-imagine the record,” DeGraw said. “I believe that this song is a great reminder how important love continues to be.”

Gavin Degraw made a splash into the mainstream with his first full length release “Chariot”. This record contained the immensely successful single “I Don’t Want to Be”, and was followed by a string of LPs and singles, which continued to validate the pop status he built from this hit.

Born 4 February 1977 in South Fallsburg, New York, US, Gavin began his music endeavors at the age of 8 singing and playing the piano. Though his parents were not involved in music (his father was a prison guard and his mother was a detox specialist) he did receive musical inspiration form his older brother Joey, who is also a musician in addition to a venue owner and founder of a record label.

Gavin’s older brother gave him the push to pursue music and with him he formed several cover bands. Later on Gavin moved to Massachusetts to attend Berklee School of Music. By the late 90s Degraw rigorously began writing his own material and started to gain a following through his frequent live performances. It was not long until he was recognized by labels. Degraw eventually ended up signing a contract with Clive Davis and put out his 2003 debut album “Chariot” through J Records. The album was an instant critical and commercial success and became even more popular once the hit single “I Don’t Want to Be” was used as the theme song for the 2005 television show “One Tree Hill”. With the resurgence of that single, “Chariot” reached platinum status and charted No. 1 on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers.

Degraw’s next album did not come out until 5 years later. Despite the wait, his self-titled sophomore release debuted at No.1 on the digital sales chart and No.7 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart. Degraw wasted no time at all putting out his third full length album. He recorded the entire album at the studio of his producer, Camus Celli, in less than two weeks and released it on 6 May 2009 (making it less than a year between the release of his last album). “Free” was not as commercially successful as his last two albums; however, it still managed to do commercially well, peaking at No. 19 on the US Billboard 200 charts.

Degraw switched record labels with the release of his fourth album and contrary to “Free” he recorded the album in multiple studios around the world, recruiting the help of producers Ryan Tedder, Butch Walker, Eric Rosse and Ron Aniello. The album contained the widely acclaimed single “Not Over You”, which became his first song to reach the top spot on the Adult Pop Songs chart.

In 2012 DeGraw collaborated with pop star Colbie Cailat for “Baby It’s Cold Outside” on her “Christmas in the Sand” album and did another joint effort with her for the Grammy nominated song “We Both Know”; which was featured in the “Safe Haven” soundtrack.

Degraw released his second album for RCA, “Make a Move” on 15 October 2013. Like his previous releases it did well on the charts reaching No. 79 in the UK and climbing all the way to No.10 on the US Billboard 200. The success of this album was followed by a US tour in support of Train. In 2014 Degraw released his greatest hits album “Finest Hour: The Best of Gavin DeGraw”. This compilation featured a well distributed mix of material including newer songs such as “You Got Me”, which was originally written for the “Dolphin Tale 2” movie.

Live reviews

Gavin DeGraw is one of those artists you have to see live to truly appreciate the depth of his talent. Whether he’s rocking the stage with a full band, or he’s just sitting at the piano singing along to an old Sam Cooke tune, his voice will hook you from the first note. Unlike many of the radio acts out there today, Gavin is one of those rare talents that sounds even better live than he does on the radio.

With an eclectic mix of his own original songs and soulful covers, Gavin rocks the stage like no other. His energy pulls directly from the crowd so the more engaged and interactive the crowd, the better his show gets. He might even throw in a surprise performance of “Let’s Get It On,” an old favorite from his days as a poor musician playing for tips in New York City. At a recent show in Nashville, he even brought along country superstar Martina McBride to sing with him on his hit “Soldier.”

There’s an intimacy to his style that sucks you into his circle and makes your feel like you’re the only person in the crowd. Don’t be surprised if you hear a story or two about his love of Billy Joel or his musings on relationships (spoiler alert: he doesn’t seem to think he’s very good at them). He’s been known to wander out in the crowd and hang out with the audience while he plays.

His passion for his craft and his love for his fans is unparalleled. You will leave wondering why you waited so long to check out a Gavin show and when you can go back for another one.

Finally getting to see Gavin DeGraw at the St augustine Theater was a dream. About two years ago we tried to see him and a tropical storm cancelled the show. This was my dream line up. Andrew McMahon was full of energy as always and had a short but great set with three of my favorites being played: "Resolution", "Dark Blue" & "I woke up in a Car". Then after a short intermission Matt Nathanson took the stage. He was dressed in his own tour shirt (which he ended up taking off and giving to one of the younger fans, she was 3). He chatted with the audience that was close to him and played songs from all of his albums, plus some covers like "Fancy", "You're the One That I Want" & "I wanna Dance with somebody"! He also got the audience to clap and dance with him. He interacted a lot with the people and at one point even came into the audience to "see the people in the back" and transitioned into different songs with ease. Then again after a short intermission Gavin took to the stage with flashing lights and his hit "Leading Man" to start the show. He also played songs from all of his albums. Playing a lot of my favorites. I loved watching him on the piano and dancing all over the stage. He didn't do a lot of talking and transitioned into each song one right after the other never losing energy. Being as it was so hot I was surprised he was so energetic honestly. This was by far one of my favorite shows ever and I go to a lot of concerts.

Without a doubt, Gavin Degraw puts on an amazing show! The non-stop energy from him and his band is something most artists these days lack. The set list was wonderful, including a cover of Hall & Oates' "Rich Girl". Gavin's energy during songs like "Best I Ever Had" made me jump up and down to the beat, while his soulful songs like "Soldier" (which he dedicated to the military men & women who fight for our freedom) made me cry and touched my heart. I have never had as much fun at a concert as I did at Gavin's! Definitely a must see!!

When it said "an acoustic evening with Gavin DeGraw" I thought him and a piano. I was gladly proved wrong. The 3 piece band made as much noise as a full compliment of band members. The show was brilliant from start to finish. All Gavins hits and a couple of covers (change gonna come was incredible). He had fun with the audience, told funny stories and even wore a kilt. His singing was bang on point. If you haven't seen him live then do yourself a favour and go and see him next time you get the chance, you won't be sorry.

One of the best concerts of all time, a really cool and down to earth guy with an amazing voice and band to back him up. Recommend it to anyone who's a fan of him or One Tree Hill, it will be an extraordinary show with a lot of surprises. The atmosphere was amazing and he can really get the audience going, an overall amazing artist. It felt genuine and sincere, it felt like Gavin DeGraw. He made the concert his and he cared about the audience and it was a super fun. I loved it.

The entire concert was amazing! I liked how intimate and cozy it was (with candles and everything) compared to other concerts I've been to. Gavin is awesome and his voice was even more fantastic in real life! However, I would've preferred if there would've been seats where you could stand close to the scene, instead of chairs, that would have made the atmosphere even better! Otherwise, the evening was perfect!

Absolutely a show to remember! Gavin really lives his music. His voice is booming, his energy is on fire, he can hold a stage and yet make the audience feel totally connected to him. He is a true showman, his music isn’t just exiting his mouth but every pore of his body. Personable and at the same time larger than life. I hope he comes back to the Cape again as I will be so in!

This acoustic evening tour was a great evening in Basel. Indeed the excellent musicians and Gavin were happy to be there with big smiles. They gave their best on stage.

The concert location in volkhaus Basel was great. A place not to big, perfect for an acoustic set up.

The sound was excellent.

Great show overall.

Thanks to Gavin, the musicians and the technical staff.

Gavin was fantastic as usually. He always puts on a great show. He seems to really enjoy preforming live I only wish he played longer. He even surprised us and came walking with his band and got right in the middle of the crowd for a song. Every year he gets better and better I have all his albums and look forward to the next time he is in town.

Gavin DeGraw Faces Medical Setback, Cancels Tour Dates

The 'Chariot' singer was put on 'vocal rest' as he continues to recover from a 'throat infection.'

By Allison Schonter - August 19, 2024 10:27 am EDT

After he was forced to cancel his Aug. 3 Festival at Sandpoint 2024 performance due to a "throat infection," the "Chariot" singer announced on Aug. 7 that the remainder of his August dates were axed as he was still "vocal rest."

"I wanted to give an update after visiting with my doctor this past week. In an accompanying video, the singer told fans that he was "not healthy enough yet to go back to work," explaining that his doctor "told me to take another week off, which really sucks. Due to his extended recovery time, Caillat went on to perform solo in Saratoga, California on Aug. 8 and Rohnert Park, California on Aug. 9. The pair's scheduled show in Pala, California on Aug. 10 was canceled, with DeGraw telling fans, "for the Pala folks, I'm sorry for the inconvenience but we are cancelling this show. Refunds are available at the original point of purchase."

He told fans impacted by the cancellations, "I'm going to have to make it up to you. Let's try it again next year." He concluded the post, "again, thank you all for your well wishes. I hope that I can make it up to all of you soon."

The tour will launch Aug. 20 at the Bilheimer Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, Florida and find DeGraw criss-crossing the Midwest and East Coast. The tour will wrap Sept. 13 at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin. Tickets go on sale July 15.

The Grammy-nominated artist took to Instagram to share the news with fans, writing, “It feels so good to be hitting the road this August and September on the ‘Face The River’ tour. Gavin DeGraw Is Taking 'Face the River' on a North American Tour and Says 'It Feels So Good'

"To watch people connect so strongly to this material, which is so personal to me, has made performing these songs one of the greatest joys of my life," DeGraw wrote on Instagram

does gavin degraw still tour

Get ready, fans! Gavin DeGraw may be coming to a city near you.

On Monday, the pop-rock musician announced he'll embark on the Face the River tour throughout August and September in support of his seventh studio album of the same name. DeGraw shared the news on social media alongside the tour poster and expressed his excitement to perform.

"It feels so good to be hitting the road this August and September on the 'Face the River' tour. The excitement of a new album and adding new music to the shows amplifies the experience so much more," DeGraw, 45, wrote on Instagram.

He continued, "To watch people connect so strongly to this material, which is so personal to me, has made performing these songs one of the greatest joys of my life. Presale begins tomorrow at 10AM local with code FACETHERIVER. All tickets are on sale this Friday, July 15."

The tour will kick off on Aug. 20 in Clearwater, Florida, and wrap Sept. 13 in Madison, Wisconsin.

The "Summertime" singer released the 10-track album on May 20. At the time, DeGraw spoke to PEOPLE about writing the album in 2020 after learning his beloved father, John Wayne, was sick and likely wouldn't live for much longer.

"As his progression got worse and worse, it really became more of a race against time. I was hoping he would get better, but then I was thinking, 'God, if he doesn't get better, I want him to hear this,'" DeGraw said at the time. "I really wanted him to hear it because it was dedicated to them. This was their record."

Not long after, Wayne underwent open-heart surgery, then suffered a mild stroke. He was eventually diagnosed with brain cancer and died in July 2020 — after getting to hear Face the River , much to DeGraw's relief.

"It was just this horrible series of events. [But] I feel like I finished it in the nick of time and played it for him in the nick of time, and that personally was important to me," the musician said.

And though Wayne died two years ago, DeGraw said that releasing the album any sooner would have taken too much of an emotional toll, as he wrote it from a "therapeutic standpoint" as a way of channeling his grief.

"I don't know if I would've been able to cope with singing the material on a regular basis," the "Fire" singer said. "Songwriting has always been therapy for me. I wanted to pay homage to them— but this is not a funeral record, it's a living record. I like to provide hope. I wanted them to live on in the best light through songs."
