World champion Uno Shoma kicks off post-Olympic season at Skate Canada

The three-time Olympic medallist from Japan is the headline act for the second figure skating Grand Prix of the season, set for this weekend (28-30 Oct.) in Mississauga.

Uno-Shoma-GettyImages-1369692526

What history will figure skating fans witness in week two of the Grand Prix season?

Last week at Skate America it was the quadruple Axel (by Ilia Malinin – the first on the Grand Prix [and second ever]) and the oldest Grand Prix medallist (that would be Deanna Stellato-Dudek , the 39-year-old Canadian pair skater).

Skate Canada International in Mississauga, Canada, is set for 28-30 Oct., with reigning world champion Uno Shoma headlining an event that has plenty of question marks around it, including the form of Kihira Rika , the 2018 Grand Prix Final champion, who is making her way back from a series of injuries.

Here, a full preview of each discipline – including the star skaters to watch – plus how and when you can tune into the action.

Read more: How Uno Shoma has found new motivation for this season

Men: Uno aims high

Where does Uno Shoma go from here? The Japanese skater is a three-time Olympic medallist and now a world champion, but is still only 24 and appears to be as hungry as ever.

He’ll have familiar company in Ontario with Canadian favourite Keegan Messing back for another season at age 30, as well as Latvian Deniss Vasiljevs , who shares coach Stephane Lambiel with Uno.

Uno’s 17-year-old compatriot Miura Kao just finished second at Skate America last weekend, the 2022 Japanese junior national champion making his mark on the senior scene.

That’s the hope for Stephen Gogolev , another 17-year-old, too. The Toronto native was the Junior Grand Prix Final champion in 2018 but has faced a series of injuries over the last four years and now stands 6 feet tall.

Also to keep an eye on: Matteo Rizzo of Italy and American Camden Pulkinen , who was fifth at Worlds in 2022.

Women: All eyes on Kihira Rika

While Uno is favoured in the men’s field, his countrywoman Kihira returns to the big stage – but with uncertainty around her current form. She suffered from a stress fracture in her right foot in 2021, missing the entirety of the Olympic season.

The two-time Japanese and Four Continents champ, now 20, competed in the Japan Open earlier this month and did not attempt any Lutz or flip jumps, her 113.44 free skate score far off her personal best of 154.72 at NHK Trophy in 2018.

South Korea’s You Young aims for her first Grand Prix gold having won a trio of bronzes. The Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 champion was sixth at Beijing 2022 and is one of just a fistful of female skates to possess the triple Axel.

Twenty-year-old Watanabe Rinka of Japan was impressive with a win at the Lombardia Trophy Challenger Series event earlier this season, winning gold, while Madeline Schizas will be the featured home hope for Canada. The 19-year-old grew up just next door in Oakville and is the reigning Canadian champ.

2017 world bronze medallist and PyeongChang 2018 team gold medallist Gabrielle Daleman of Canada is also in the field.

Reigning junior world bronze medallist Lindsay Thorngren , just 16, will look for a strong senior Grand Prix debut after American teammate Isabeau Levito won silver at Skate America in her debut.

Pairs: Miura and Kihara take on new role

A week after reigning world champs Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier opened their season with the win  in Boston, the world bronze medallists Miura Riku and Kihara Ryuichi hope to do the same in Mississauga.

The expressive Japanese duo is coached by Canadians Bruno Marcotte and Meagan Duhamel , the latter a two-time world champion. Miura/Kihara had a breakout season last year and will surely be the crowd favourites as they train in the Toronto area.

The Canadian team of Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Ethier finished third at Skate America, while their teammates Brooke McIntosh and Benjamin Mimar are the reigning junior world bronze medallists.

Alisa Efimova and Ruben Blommaert of Germany are in their first full international season together, coming in second twice at Challenger Series events to start the year. Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii of Italy won Lombardia Trophy last month, while Emily Chan and Spencer Howe of the U.S. will be in the podium conversation, as well.

Ice dance: Gilles and Poirier are back for more

While the international pairs field feels very wide open, the jockeying in ice dance in the new Olympic quad is fierce and competitive.

Enter 2021 world bronze medallists Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier , who had made it their goal to land on the Olympic podium last season only to fall disappointedly short . The Canadian team enters its 13th season together and will try for a third Skate Canada win, having triumphed in 2019 and again last year.

Great Britain’s Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson will challenge them for that top spot, the Montreal-based team having already clinched two Challenger titles this season.

Fear/Gibson will star later this season in the first-ever Grand Prix in their home country at the MK John Wilson Trophy in Sheffield, Great Britain (11-13 Nov.).

Canada’s Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha already have two Challenger wins this year, as well, while the French-turned-Canadian team of Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac won bronze at Skate America last weekend.

Also in the field: Komatsubara Misato and Koleto Tim of Japan and Team USA’s Caroline Green and Michael Parsons .

Rideau Canal Skateway, Winter

Rideau Canal Skateway

Follow Rideau Canal Skateway

Every winter, the Rideau Canal turns into the Rideau Canal Skateway, aka, the world’s largest skating rink! From roughly January to late February or March, you can skate any section of the 7.8 kilometres (4.8 miles) thanks to its universally accessible ramps and facilities.

Starting (or ending!) downtown and winding its way to Dow’s Lake, the Rideau Canal Skateway boasts a number of Beavertail stands where you can grab a delicious treat and hot chocolate. You may also spot another local business, Dunrobin Distilleries, offering boozy beverages to those 19 years of age and older.

Non-skaters are welcome to walk or shuffle along the edges of the Skateway (safely away from the skaters), or on the pathways alongside the Rideau Canal, Ontario’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In fact, the Rideau Canal Skateway is so impressive, CNN Travel named Ottawa the only Canadian city to visit in 2023 partly because of it!

Did you know?

The ice must be 30 cm in thickness for the Rideau Canal Skateway to open. This means there needs to be about 10-14 straight days of -10 to -20 degree Celsius days in order for the quality of the ice to meet the standards of safe skating!

Check out the National Capital Commission’s official Rideau Canal Skateway page with updates as to when the world’s largest skating rink will open, which parts of the rink are open, access points, amenities, and more.

NEW YORK (AP) — Billie Eilish is hitting the road.

The pop performer will embark on a worldwide arena tour this fall, kicking off in Quebec City in Canada on Sept. 29 and concluding in Dublin on July 27, 2025. She’ll hit many major cities in North America in 2024 before heading to Australia and then Europe.

Presale begins Tuesday, and any remaining tickets will become available Friday at billieeilish.com . A percentage of proceeds will benefit the environmental nonprofit REVERB.

Earlier this month, Eilish announced her highly anticipated third studio album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” will be released May 17.

The news arrived via Instagram, where Eilish shared the album artwork showing the pop singer floating in a body of water after being ejected from a door. In the caption, she wrote that she will not drop singles in advance of the release.

“I wanna give it to you all at once,” she captioned the image. “I truly could not be more proud of this album.”

Eilish worked with her brother and longtime collaborator Finneas on “Hit Me Hard and Soft.” The pair recently took home their second Oscar for their big “Barbie” ballad “What Was I Made For?” In doing so, Eilish, 22, became the youngest person by far to have won two career Oscars.

Prominent conservationist was ‘true force of nature’

skating canada tour

On a winter's day when he was 92, Bruce Falls led his family on a three-hour hike around their 180-acre Ontario property to monitor forest bird populations as he had for years. Despite the deep snow, they visited all the sites near Peterborough to ensure they were still approachable.

“My legs were aching, but this was something he wanted to do and remarkably had no problem doing it,” recalled Falls’ son, Stephen.

But those special sites will no longer have visits from J. Bruce Falls. The prominent Canadian conservationist passed away last week at his family home in Toronto at the age of 100.

Get daily news from Canada's National Observer

Falls is remembered by family, friends and the Canadian conservation community as a champion of nature and a leader in conservation and bird studies, which was his main interest. His impact resonates through institutions like Bird Studies Canada , the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the University of Toronto (U of T) . He was also a pioneer of bird atlases.

Even at 97, when Falls could only manage flat ground with a walker, he still surveyed loons on a nearby Muskoka lake and insisted on visits for breeding surveys and fishing, said Stephen.

“He thought he could make it up a rocky portage to visit the lake by canoe and wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

However, his dad ran out of steam about halfway up the portage, so Stephen and his brother strapped him into his walker and carried him the rest of the way. Then, they lowered him from a beaver dam into a canoe.

“Getting a 97-year-old out of a canoe onto a beaver dam at the end of the afternoon was a death-defying feat,” said Stephen. “Of course, he wanted to go back the next year, but his 60-plus-year-old children weren’t up to the task. I’m sure he would tell you about the healing power of nature and how much his life was enriched by such experiences.”

skating canada tour

Graduating from U of T in 1948 with an honours biology degree, Falls pursued a doctorate in zoology, specializing in small mammal behaviour. Joining the university as a professor in 1954, he conducted extensive field studies in Algonquin Park , publishing over 100 scientific papers .

Bruce Falls is remembered by family, friends and the Canadian conservation community as a champion of nature and a leader in conservation and bird studies, which was his main interest. #BirdStudies #ClimateCchange

“He was a pioneer in the study of birdsong and its relation to territorial behaviour, basing his findings on field experiments,” reads a statement from U of T . “He and his students also investigated two colour phases of white-throated sparrows that differ in breeding behaviour and ecology.”

Falls was actively involved in conservation efforts, co-founding the Nature Conservancy of Canada in 1962 and later serving as its chair. He also played key roles in organizations like Bird Studies Canada and the Long Point Bird Observatory. Recognized for his lifelong dedication to nature conservation and groundbreaking research, Falls was awarded the Order of Canada in 2017.

“As a founder of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in the early 1960s, Bruce fundamentally reshaped the approach to conservation in Ontario and throughout Canada. NCC is now the nation-leading non-profit private land conservation organization,” said John Riley, the former NCC chief science officer and national director of conservation strategies, who had a long professional relationship with Falls.

“Bruce Falls was the foremost leader in conservation and bird studies in Canada in his generation,” said Riley.

After the Second World War, Falls recognized the urgency of identifying Canada's threatened natural areas, noted Riley. He led Canada's efforts in the International Biological Program, mobilizing volunteers to document key natural areas nationwide.

“Dr. Bruce Falls was a pioneer and true force for nature,” said Catherine Grenier, president and CEO of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, in a statement shared with Canada’s National Observer. “He taught us all to cherish our natural world. Today, we mourn the loss of a generous and thoughtful man who made an immense contribution to conservation across this country. His passion and dedication will be appreciated by generations to come.”

Falls was tremendously concerned about climate change and felt it was an impending crisis that needed more attention, his son noted.

“He touched so many lives and affected so many amazing organizations in his lifetime,” said Stephen. “He would say to pay attention to the natural world, that all citizens should be watchdogs. Whether by being actively involved, or casting votes, we need to balance our economic needs with the needs of the natural world.”

In an interview for the NCC’s 50th anniversary, Falls said: “In many ways, for many people, contact with nature is important. We need it for our own health if nothing else. We needed areas where scientists can study nature to try and unlock some of the information that we need to manage the rest of the environment.”

Certainly, life for the Falls family was focused on outdoor activities, recalled Stephen. Weekends, summer and Christmas holidays were generally in the woods or on a lake.

“We pretty much grew up with a daily dose of nature, and it was medicine that served us well,” said Stephen.

“When my siblings talk, we are often discussing what we have witnessed in the natural world. There is nothing like getting out into nature to keep you mentally and physically healthy. Just look at my 100-year-old dad for proof of the invigorating power of nature.”
