  • PMT1961 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Must do Wellington experience We live in Wellington but it was having friends from the UK who are LotR fans that inspired us to finally do this. We are so glad we did. Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. Our tour guide was excellent and cheerfully answered the many questions fired at her. Our friends (who had already done Hobbiton too) loved it. Read more Written 30 March 2024

  • CliffS223 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Probably Best for Special Effects Fans We had an okay time during our 90 minute tour. Some of the rooms had background music playing, and in others we could hear the guide from another group in an adjoining room. This made it very difficult to hear our guide, who was soft spoken and talked a bit too fast. Still we enjoyed looking at the props. This tour might be a 10 for Lord of the Rings fans and fans of special effects. For us, it wasn’t. The highlight was Tuesday in the tin foil room who was highly entertaining, spoke loudly and clearly, and ended the tour on a high note. Read more Written 23 March 2024
  • ScrumptiousSolent 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles An interesting experience This is a must do activity if you’re interested in special effects or the Lord of the Rings, or you’re just a ‘movie buff’. It was good, although it wasn’t what I expected. You can’t take photos so there’s not a lot to show for your visit. You’re guided around maybe 5-6 rooms where props are on display your guide tells you more about them. However it’s not a ‘behind the scenes’ tour so you don’t get to see a lot of the artists at work (apart from a glimpse into the master wordsmith’s area which was fascinating.) The only area where you can take photos is an odd final room where they demonstrate tinfoil modelling - and there’s the obligatory ‘dressing up photo opportunity’ here too so you can buy an image as you leave. I came away a little bit underwhelmed. Seeing the costumes and swords from Lord of the Rings was great, but the overall experience was a bit slow paced (some rooms took too long, others I would have liked more time in). You walk around with maybe 20 other people and a guide. Read more Written 21 March 2024

  • LisaPB60 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing tour of this unique Workshop Enjoyed a wonderful tour of this workshop with a guide who explained about what we were seeing as we went around. Our two men were especially interested in the swords, but all four of us found many things to be amazed at. Going through here first, made us truly appreciate the work they did when we visited the Gallipoli exhibition at Te Papa the next day. Read more Written 20 March 2024

  • S8654PWchristinap 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing Really disappointed. It’s hyped as one of the best things to do in Wellington and was a let down. For $65 it’s just 3 rooms: one of which is a lady showing us her own home made portfolio and stuffed animals and telling you how she stalked the owners for a job and another is playing with tin foil. There’s only really one real room with props but not many you can get close to or hold. Really think they need to lower the price. Read more Written 20 March 2024

Who answered every single question and had so much knowledge on costumes, movies, actors and much more. No photos allowed and we understood as people could copy the ideas etc. It is really reasonably priced.. we booked on Agoda. I was a little confused with the two addresses but once we got there we understood. It's on the corner of two streets. Thank you threeam and the team at Weka!!! Read more Written 14 March 2024

Wētā Workshop Tours & Wētā Cave

21 Camperdown Road, Miramar, Wellington

Visit the home of movie-making magic in the heart of Wellywood, and see behind the scenes of world-renowned films and television.

Tucked away in a quiet suburban Miramar street, a short drive from Wellington’s city centre lies a cinematic gem. Wētā Workshop crafts special effects and props for some of the world’s most renowned films and TV shows.

The design and manufacturing facility combines cutting-edge technology with hand-crafted artistry to serve up Oscar-winning props, costumes, and creature effects. And, best of all, it opens its doors to fans who want to see exactly how the magic is made.

On the big screen

Wētā Workshop is best known for its Academy Award®-winning work on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ trilogies. But there are plenty of other movies and shows its had a hand in. Its constantly growing list of blockbuster credits includes ‘Blade Runner 2049’, ‘Avatar’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, ‘Dune’, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, and many more.

Take a tour

The Wētā team are happy to take the public behind the scenes in their creative workshop tours. Guests can explore different sorts of prop-making, costumes, and special effects that go into making movie magic. There are plenty of recognisable props, intricate models and set pieces along the way, including items from Middle-Earth and beyond. If you’re lucky, you’ll spy an artist at work on the tour stage.

The tour departs from the Wētā Cave retail store. A cavern of creativity in its own right, the shop features plenty of photo opportunities. Sneak past the giant trolls who guard the front door and don’t forget to check out the mini-museum where a particularly hairy pair of Hobbit feet are on display.

If you want to get hands-on yourself, try a creative workshop. Roll up your sleeves and learn the magic of sculpting with household materials and modelling clay. Refine, design, and dye a leather keepsake in an introduction to leather work. Or, try your hand at special effects makeup. You’ll learn to create gruesome wounds, fake blood, scars and scrapes. Workshops are introductory and no creative experience is necessary.
