Sailing In Kyparissia

Kyparissia can be found in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece. It’s located on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea and offers magnificent views of the coastline.

Although it’s not as well known as some of the other towns in the Peloponnese, Kyparissia is definitely worth a visit. Let’s dive in and explore the best things to do in Kyparissia.

#1 Explore Kyparissia Town

Kyparissia is an ancient coastal town with a conflicting feel. The walk from the harbour into the town is unimpressive, almost a little sad, and if you were to venture no further then you will wonder why you stopped here.

However, walk about 20 minutes through the town and uphill and you will be treated to a lovely walk past some pretty houses, leading to a street with an old town feel and some inviting-looking restaurants and bars. At the end of this street, you will find an impressive church with incredible views.

#2 Enjoy The Views From Kyparissia Castle

Perhaps the main attraction in Kyparissia town is the castle just up from the church in the old town. The ancient castle ruins are free to visit and come complete with a small amphitheater!

The views from the castle ruins are impressive and worth the walk. We went up there for sunset and it really was beautiful.

The town is surrounded by olive groves, so if you explore a little beyond the worn-down town you will find big areas of green. You’ll find forests including cypresses and pines to the east side of town.

#3 Relax On One Of Kyparissia’s Beaches

Behind the harbour you will find a (rather crowded) strip of beach. Settle here for a dip in the sea or follow the coastline further and you will have the sea all to yourself.

If you’re prepared to do a bit of a walk then Kyparissia has some beautiful, secluded beaches on offer. The rocky terrain requires a bit of a scramble in places but the sunset from all along the coastline is incredible, with some interesting rock formations jutting out into the sea.

Loggerhead sea turtles, also known as Caretta Caretta, make this coastline their home and you may be lucky enough to spot one in the harbour.

If you’re lucky enough to have your own transport then there are several interesting things to see a short drive away from Kyparissia town.

#4 Neda waterfalls

These stunning waterfalls are well worth a day trip if you have some time on your hands. The road to get there is a little ‘interesting’, so keep that in mind. You’ll want to cool off in the crystal clear waters so make sure you pack your swim stuff!

#5 The Watermill

You can walk here, though you may want to turn back as soon as you set off! It is a sweaty 2km hike uphill, so be prepared! The authentically restored flour mill grinds using water and there is a small display about it’s past. There is a little cafe that serves lovely Greek food and refreshing drinks and a pretty garden with citrus trees and herbs.

There is a large AB supermarket and several smaller supermarkets and separate fruit and veg, bakeries, and butcheries in town.

Just before you reach AB you will find several shops that will refill camping gaz, we even managed to buy a spare gas canister as we only have a small one and have been struggling to find gas refills around Greece. We paid 9 euros for a refill and 35 euros for an extra canister.

There is a large hardware store that is well stocked and that sells a very limited range of boaty things. It obviously just stocks a few bits and bobs for the local fishermen.

There is a large post office in the centre of town and the staff were very helpful when we needed to send a package.

Where To Eat In Kyparissia

The prettiest place to head for a bite to eat would definitely be the old town area in Kyparissia, though there is a limited choice.

There is one big restaurant there that seems very popular with the locals, with chairs and tables spilling out onto the street. In the summer months the restaurant opposite the marina is open and although the marina itself isn’t that pretty, the views of the sunset from here are superb.

There is a busy town square that is vibrant and bustling some the evening time. Although we didn’t stop for a drink here it seemed like a great place to immerse yourself in the Greek culture, where big families meet in the evening for a drink and the kids play outside.

Kyparissia is a logical stop for any cruiser on the sail down the West coast of mainland Greece. Although navily and navionic reviews don’t rave about this coastal town we found it had more to offer than first appearances suggested.

The ‘town quay’ in Kyparissia, or perhaps more fittingly what looks like a half-finished marina, is well sheltered from the North Westerlies and free. In mid-August, there was plenty of space to Med moor on the quay to the East (with some chance of getting space to come alongside).

The West side of the marina reports shallower depths and was empty bar one catamaran when we arrived. With our shallow draft, we decided to come alongside here and had depths of 2.9m (though after a little scout around we could see some rocks and debris that may affect boats with a bigger draft).

The north-westerly wind blows right through the gap in the harbour wall here so we had a few less comfortable nights with heavier wind. You can tie off to metal rings fitted on the harbour walls. The walls are high to fender appropriately. We estimated room for about three boats to anchor inside the harbour walls.

You can anchor off on the beach next to Kyparissia’s harbour, though it looked as though it would be very exposed from a lot of angles.

There is water here (on the main quay) and plenty of bins, including glass and plastic recycling. There are showers on the beach opposite the harbour which we enjoyed using as the sun was setting (what a view while you wash!)

The harbour is a little sad looking, as though someone tried to make something of it once and then gave up. There is work being done on a damaged harbour wall that looks to be almost finished.

The land of Messenia is of breathtaking beauty – with contrasts and the kindest inhabitants, just two hours drive from Athens. It is literally covered with olive groves, mountains, valleys, deep gorges and hidden coves.

You will find a long string of beaches, small or long sandy beaches, some with calm waters and other with big waves – a diversity range satisfying both families and surfers. The mountainous villages have breathtaking views to the Mediterranean Sea. Take a break from your adventures enjoying some of the great traditional dishes in the village taverns.

The beautiful town of Kyparissia   is to be found in Messenia in the southwest part of Peloponnese. It is part of the municipality Trifylia, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. The town has around 6,000 inhabitants and is located halfway between Pyrgos and Methoni, about 65 km south of Pyrgos and 16 km south of the Neda River. The town is built on terraces. In the Middle Ages, it was known as Arkadia.

By car : The most common way to reach Kyparissia is by car from Athens or the port of Patras. Going from Athens you need to drive through the Greek National Road Corinth – Kalamata E65. After Tripolis, follow the signs for Kyparissia. From this point forward the road becomes narrower. The distance from Athens to Kyparissia is 245 km. Going from Patras you will follow the coastal road E55 through Pyrgos. The distance from Patras to Kyparissia is 158 km.

By bus : There are frequent buses from Athens to Kyparissia. They depart from Kifissos KTEL Bus Station in Athens and stop at the central square of Kyparissia. The travel duration is approx. 4 hours. Kyparissia is connected to nearby towns by intercity routes. During summer you can fly to the airport of Kalamata with charters and low-cost flights from abroad. Athens airport receives international and domestic flights all year.

Things to see in Kyparissia

There is an acropolis and a fortress built during the Frankish period. The fortress is a vivid testimony to the historical eras of the town. The castle dominates the old town and its view to the Ionian Sea is quite unique. From here you may enjoy a spectacular sunset while your thoughts drift in time.

The town center is nearly 200 m from the shoreline of the Ionian Sea, which includes the nearby Gulf of Kyparissia, and west of the nearest mountains. The town has a port to the northwest part of the bay; its barriers are almost shaped like the letter G . The port is mainly used for cargo purposes and has no ferry services. At Kyparissia, Memi, Kalo Nero, Agrilos-Stomio and Elaia there are sandy beaches and these are considered to be as good as those to be found on Zakynthos.

In the region of Kyparissia you will find a great many beautiful beaches. From north to south you meet lovely beaches, like Ai-Lagoudis in the town of Kyparissia as well as Kartela, Sani, and Terpsithea just a few kilometres away from the city centre. You will also find some small coves in the region great for swimming. The two most beautiful beaches in Kyparissia Ai Lagoudis beach and Kartela beach.

Shoreline with Loggerhead sea turtles

The shoreline features Loggerhead sea turtles, also know as Caretta caretta. The loggerhead, is an oceanic turtle distributed throughout the world. The average loggerhead measures around 90 centimeters (35 in) long when fully grown, although larger specimens of up to 270 centimeters (110 in) have been discovered. It spends most of its life in saltwater with females briefly coming ashore to lay eggs.

The loggerhead sea turtle has a low reproductive rate. Loggerheads are considered an endangered species and are protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Untended fishing gear is responsible for many loggerhead deaths. They may also suffocate if they are trapped in fishing trawls. Loss of suitable nesting beaches and the introduction of exotic predators has also taken a toll on loggerhead populations.

The Neda river begins in the mountains of Lykaio to the west through a mixture of barren rock and forests, it flows into the Messinia prefecture and near the village of Neda which owes its name from this river, for the next 40 to 50 km it flows with the boundary of Messinia and Ilia prefectures for the rest of its length and covers the most length. It passes into the forests, marshes and the delta at the small plain area 2 km west of the highway of the GR-9/E55 (Pyrgos – Kyparissia) and into the Ionian Sea with the Gulf of Kyparissia.

Kyparissia is an ancient coastal town of great beauty. There were times in the past where it was a town of some importance, being situated near ancient Olympia and Pylos. It has been inhabited since the 2nd millennium BC. From Homer’s Iliad we know that Kyparissia belonged to the kingdom of Nestor and that it participated in the Trojan War. During the Roman times it was at its peak of development, minting its own coins, but also during the Byzantine period it enjoyed significant economic growth.

Olive growing dominates the local agriculture; the town is almost surrounded by olive groves and trees and mixed farming. You’ll find forests including cypresses and pines  to the east side of town.

Hiking in Messenia

Peloponnese often surprises you with its variety of natural beauty. One of these surprises is the Neda waterfalls. The routes combine the unique natural beauty of the gorge with waterfalls, natural tunnels, and the vegetation of the area along with the opulent cultural and monumental profile of Ancient Phigaleia. A huge plane tree in Ancient Krini, situated in the eastern edge of the Phigaleia, is proposed as the starting point. After crossing the area of the stone-built settlement, with direction to the south, after 500 meters you reach the edge of the gorge.

From this point, you follow a path with wooden steps and handrails so that it can be accessible to the public. It leads to the “White Water” waterfall on the conflux of the Lymax affluent and Neda River. From the wooden bridge you will get a spectacular view of the waterfall. The waters, which fall from 60 meters high, break into foam and whiten, while the flora create a charming and fascinating landscape. From the “White Water” waterfall the daring visitors can cross the gorge in the summer following the flow of Neda’s waters. In almost two hours hike you’ll reach the arched stone-built bridge which joins Elia with Messinia. From there, following the river bed or the shaped track at the northern edge of the bed, you’ll arrive at the “Stomio” where the river vanishes roaring in a tunnel of 100 meters.  Until that point the river was floatable in antiquity. From there the river bed expands ending smoothly in the Gulf of Kyparrisia. The area of Stomio is the most impressive point of the gorge. The trail requires attention and ability to walk steadily, children at the age of 6 should be able to come along. The sight is definitely worth the trip.

Health travelling to Messinia

The “Thermal Springs of Kaiafas” is a spa in the municipality of Zacharo in Peloponnese. It is located 30 km south-east of Pyrgos and nearly 32 km north of Kyparissia. The Thermal Springs of Kaiafas, is a geological formation that consists of a spring where warm water comes from deep inside the Earth’s crust and flows up to the surface. The spring is located inside a naturally formed cave at the foot of Lapithas mountain.

The water of the spring contains an important concentration of sulfur compounds and is also rich in minerals. It has therapeutic properties, and there is a spa facility exactly outside of the cave’s mouth. The spa has been a major tourist attraction and is visited by people who want to bath in the thermal water of the spring. The springs location is very close to the Kaiafas Lake and the sandy beaches of the Ionian sea coast.

Weather and climate in Kyparissia

Like in most of Greece weather in Kyparissia is mild. Temperatures during summer are hot, often reaching 40-42°C. Fortunately, during the evening a light breeze is cooling down the atmosphere to around 33-35°C. Autumn is a pleasant season to visit the area of Kyparissia. It starts in late October or early November with a few drops of rain falling for a couple of hours. Being close to the sea Kyparissia doesn’t get really cold, temperatures never go below 5-10°C. By the middle of March spring arrives, and by May you can start swimming in the sea.

An afternoon at the Old Town and castle in Kyparissia

Impressive introduction : On the fourth day of our May 2017 road trip through the western Peloponnese we discovered another charming town to which we will have to pay a longer return visit sometime: Kyparissia.

We had scheduled Kyparissia for just a sightseeing stop during our drive from Marathopoli to Katakolo, yet within minutes of stepping out of the car we were already wishing we could stay longer than just the afternoon. 

That strong first impression came from the quick realization that Kyparissia has all the key features and characteristics we find particularly appealing in a small Greek town: beautiful scenery and views; a castle and lots of old buildings that convey a strong sense of history; plenty of intriguing lanes and streets to wander and explore; picturesque buildings and interesting architecture;  inviting places to have coffee, dine, and do a bit of browsing or shopping; and a comfortable “I feel at home here” ambiance.

However, with fewer than five free hours before we would have to hit the road again, we knew we were only going to scrape the surface of all that Kyparissia and its surrounding area have to offer. Still, we enjoyed everything we did manage to see and do in our limited time, and we were glad we had included the town as one of the stops on our journey. We would consider Kyparissia to be a “must see” destination for anyone undertaking a driving tour like the one we did through the western Peloponnese, and we think it definitely deserves more than a quick look around.

When we arrived at El. Venizelou Street in Kyparissia in late morning, clouds above the nearby mountains suggested we might get rained on. But most of the clouds cleared away, leaving us with bright sunshine all afternoon.

We’re drawn to old buildings, whether derelict or restored, and we found the facade of the former National Bank building — now a historic landmark —  right across the road from where we parked the car upon arriving in Kyparissia

Upon arrival in Kyparissia, we parked briefly on El. Venizelou Street in the lower town so we could have a look around and check out a few of the shops. The road was lined with a mix of commercial and residential buildings from different architectural design eras, including elegant old buildings, some of which — like the former National Bank — were in derelict condition, and others that were either in excellent shape or appeared to have been painstakingly restored. They gave us a sneak peak of the wide variety of building design styles and construction periods we would soon encounter in Kyparissia’s Ano Poli, the historic hilltop Old Town, where we had planned to spend most of our time.

Our next stop was Eleni Chameri Street, the main road in the Old Town, where we found on-street parking close to the Memorial of the Fallen . The war monument is situated in a small square with amazing views that include the Castle of Kyparissia off to the right, and the entire town below, extending all the way down the hill to the sea.

From the memorial we walked to the  Castle of Kyparissia , located at the opposite end of Eleni Chameri Street. We strode through the open gate (there is no ticket booth at the entrance) and climbed steps and trails up the hillside to see what remains of the ancient fortress. Apart from the external fortification walls, only a few stone buildings still stand on the site — but none are open to the public.  It doesn’t take long to wander around and explore the grounds, but the castle is worth a stop, especially for its wonderful views of Kyparissia and the surrounding area.

After our castle hike we returned to Eleni Chameri Street and made a beeline for Algo-rithmos Cafe Bar , where we sat in the shade at one of the tables out front to have coffees and rest our legs.  Refreshed from our coffee break, we all set out on our separate ways to explore the Old Town and vicinity. There was little traffic and only a few people out and about, so the neighbourhood was exceptionally quiet and peaceful. It was nice not having to jump out of the way of passing cars and trucks, or jostle past other pedestrians, while observing the scenery and taking photographs.  The place is probably bustling during July and August, so we were glad we got to enjoy the town’s scenic streets and lanes without hordes of tourists teeming about.

We regrouped back at Algo-rithmos for another coffee break a couple of hours later, then did some souvenir shopping across the street at Messinia Gi , a store which carries an extensive selection of food, beverage, fashion and souvenir products made locally in Messenia. After more walking around, we all agreed it was time to call it quits on sightseeing, and find a nice spot for lunch. We chose Palia Agora , which is located just a few doors down the street from Messinia Gi, where we sat outdoors and enjoyed a variety of delicious mezes. I will tell you more about Messinia Gi and Palia Agora in a separate post.

The fabulous meal brought our brief Kyparissia visit to an end on a high note. We reluctantly piled back in the car for the drive to Katakolo, where we would spend the night before heading to the port at Kyllini to catch a ferry to Kefalonia. We’ll go back to see more of Kyparissia another time. We’ve got to — it’s exactly the kind of place where we enjoying spending vacation time.

What a lovely website. Kyparissia is one of my favorite towns also. I lived on the small beach in the early seventies as a hippy in 1973 and 1976. I was last there 4 years ago and many times before. Just down the road southwards is Methoni with its romantic fortress by the sea and if you go north you come to Kalo Nero with an amazing beach and thermal springs. Lord Byron loved Greece and many other people also. Regards Martin Piernikarczyk

Getting to Kyparissi and Where to Stay

In the fall of 2015 they completed the road from Leonideon to Kyparissi. Well they connected it anyway. I don't know how complete it is but it is worth a shot.

Kyparissia Tourism

Kyparissia is a lovely seaside town in western Peloponnese located on a beautiful location, on the slopes of Mount Egaleo. Although tourism in Kyparissia is mostly open to Greek tourists, the region distinguishes for the relaxing atmosphere, the lovely beaches and the romantic sunset from the Medieval Castle.
