Day 10 post op

Hello everyone! I am home!!! Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Recovery is going much better!! This morning my surgeon removed my two drains and stitches from my face incision, half (15 staples) from my leg incision (15 staples are still left), and he removed my feeding tube!! He was happy with my facial movement at the moment enough for me to eat on my own, so great progress there!! Liquid diet for me until I see him next Thursday for our next follow-up appointment. The pathology report from the bone tumor isn’t back yet, so still waiting on that. And he looked at my CT done at the hospital and did see a mass/lesion on my thyroid, so he will order an ultrasound down the road for that one. After I recovered a bit from this. Otherwise, daily progress. Goal is to get rid of this facial paralysis. And to get me eating/talking normally by 3-6 months. I’ll have daily physical therapy for my face during that time. And daily physical therapy for learning to walk as well. We have a road ahead of us. But God is already there! He’s got me!! And He’s so so so good!!! 🙌🏼💙

The day I got to go home

I am being discharged from the hospital, praise the Lord!! I have some good, bad, and ugly news. The good is that the surgery itself was a success! The bone tumor is gone! The graft took. My leg (believe it or not) is doing well without the shin bone there. Yes, it feels VERY odd like phantom pains. The bad news is I still have face paralysis, so I will have a feeding tube at home for a little bit. 😥 The ugly news is that they found two “tiny” masses on my inferior thyroid gland. 😭 But I’m believing that those are benign, and gone by my next CT! Enough is enough and I’m here to glorify Jesus in all I do, so we gonna get some healing and some joy and some presence and praise His Holy Name! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Thank you for checking on me, the boys, and Case. I couldn’t have done any of this without you all by my side in prayer!!! Love you all!!

Day 6 post-op

Day 6 post-op update: recovery is going. Great news is the tumor is gone (praise God!!), the bone graft from leg took, and learning to walk is going really well!!! God is soooo good and with me all the time. I don’t have the strength to do this, but he pours His strength in for me to take. I have left-side facial paralysis, unfortunately, so I cannot move my face on the left side. Can’t close my eye, can’t shut my mouth, and is difficult to talk. Because of that I cannot eat and the feeding tube has to stay. 😢 My surgeon ordered a swallow test tomorrow to see if I can pass that to remove the tube, so I’m seeking His healing in my face because the tube hurts so much. But during this time in the hospital has been a joy to spread love, light, and joy to the staff. They love coming into my room and we talk about family, Jesus, and ministry. They can’t get over my joyful spirit during this and I’m glad I can be a light to them. As a nurse, I know it’s hard to care for and carry some of those burdens from patients. And I love how God can use me on this side of the table and show Jesus to them as they work. My wonderful tribe has brought food and blessed the staff each shift and I’m so thankful for them and everyone here praying and thinking of me. I really appreciate and love you all! 🫶🏼

Day 2 post-op

The surgery went really well. The skull piece with the tumor inside of it has been removed. The fibula bone from her left leg has successfully been grafted into her skull - along with the artery and vein. There is good blood flow on both the graft site (face) and donor site (leg). Jenny still has a feeding tube placed, unfortunately, due to left-sided facial paralysis. She was extubated (breathing tube taken out) due to her body not adjusting well to the medical coma she was placed in. Her blood pressure dropped dangerously low on her first night in ICU. Her temperature also started to spike. Her blood sugar was in the high 200's, and she was waking up through the induced coma in a lot of pain. So the decision was made by her surgeon and  ICU physician to take her off the ventilator. As rough as that was she took it like a champ and even stood up and walked with a walker to a chair to sit one hour afterward. She is a ROCKSTAR!! We are still in ICU, but waiting for a bed on the neurology floor.

The day of surgery

We got here at Houston Methodist at 0530 before sunrise to get checked in. Jenny is doing well in surgery and we thank Pastor Mike, Jenny's mom, Candice, Stephanie, Theresa, and Kerrie for being here today. They made posters for her and shared stories. We can't thank you all enough for being here! 

The San Anton trip

Case surprised me and the boys with a relaxing trip to San Antonio the weekend before my surgery. It was so good to relax, have fun, and be with family (Aus joined us too!) before this next journey begins.

A few of my favorite things: swimming, ocean life, roller coasters, and family! And, we just happened to be in the right place at the right time to see the solar eclipse!! What an awesome fun weekend! 

The day my job blessed me.

I’ve had a lot of people ask how I’m able to work with everything going on, so I wanted to take a moment to give God the glory. Because He deserves ALL of it!! About 6 weeks before my first surgery I was looking around for work-from-home jobs and found a remote position with Houston Methodist Corporate as a Care Manager. I applied. Didn’t think much of it, and didn’t hear anything back until a month later as they requested a phone interview. I had been sick, not feeling well, and almost canceled the interview. But I felt that pull inside of me to do it, so I did. The interview was over, and a few days before my surgery the manager called me and offered me the job! She said she wasn’t even supposed to have an opening until next year, but the unexpected happened and she was able to request two new positions which were unexpectedly approved - and I was offered one of them! So as much as I miss my Houston Methodist Willowbrook family, being able to work from home, have ice packs on all day, work from my doctor appointments (I take my laptop everywhere lol), and take medications without having to drive has been an AMAZING blessing! There’s no way this wasn’t God! There’s no way He didn’t have a plan. There’s no way He didn’t open the doors for me to still be able to work. God is sooooo good and faithful!! And now I get to help all patients across the Houston Methodist system working for all seven hospitals and it’s so fun! I still get to help new mothers, and patients recovering from surgery, and problem-solve issues the patients may have. Even remotely, I can make a difference! And all while being in my pj’s wearing my ice packs! 🤩🤩🤩 God never fails us!! 🙌🏼 He is always 10 steps ahead of us!! All we have to do is take the step, go through the door, and see the goodness He has for us!! 💜

The day of Overtime.

Casey and his youth leaders did an amazing job putting on a youth outreach for the town of Tarkington/Cleveland area! I was highly impressed seeing his calling in action! The outreach is called Overtime as it starts after the homecoming football game. Casey had free snow cones, 700 slices of pizza with bottles of water, bounce houses, obstacle courses, a mechanical bull, games, prizes, and amazing praise and worship by The Great I Am (Casey had them sing my favorite song, Yeshua 🥰)! There were 15 salvations and I am sure seeds were planted in all of their hearts as we loved on the students all night! The church of Rural Shade showed up and God showed out ! We had almost 30 volunteers and leaders helping us with this event and couldn’t have done it without them. God is so faithful and good!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼  

The day we visited Austin.

Casey, Isaac, and Jenny took a mini-weekend road trip to visit Austin at Texas State University. It was so good to visit Austin and his roommate Dominic! Aus took us to the river right by their dorm and it was so cold but felt SO good in the 104F temp! Proud of them and the hard work they are dedicating to! Austin's classes are Calculus, Political Science, Chemistry, University Seminar, and Writing. Talk about a full load! And, so far, he's got all A's - keep up the great work!!! We are so proud of you, Aus!!

The day I got my diagnosis.

As you all know we have been awaiting my visit with Dr. Slopis at MD Anderson to see what is causing these tumors to grow. I sat down with the doctor for an hour and a half going through my assessment, health history, imaging studies, labs, etc. He took the time to answer alllll the questions we had afterward, it was very informative!! In short, I was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (which is what the other physicians thought and why they referred me to this clinic). NF is a rare disorder that causes tumors (in which about 10% of those are cancerous) to form in the nervous system, around nerves. The tumors can show up anywhere, including the brain, spinal cord, and muscle tissue. Because of it being so rare (I’m 1 of only 100,000 in the US), and it having a high correlation to malignancies, the clinic is housed at MD Anderson. In fact, MD Anderson has one of the largest neurofibromatosis programs in the nation! So, I will be under the care of Dr. Slopis and his team/program, essentially for the rest of my life. Moving forward I will have to have mammograms done every year (due to increased risk of developing breast cancer), brain MRIs done every 2 years (due to increased risk of developing brain cancer), and full body scans done every 2 years to ensure no tumors of any kind are growing anywhere. But I am confident, and speaking life, that no more tumors will ever grow in my body and I will be free of this nonsense!!! 🙌🏼 The plan is to perform a bone scan coming up and continue with my surgery on my jaw to remove that tumor. He did say he was very pleased with the care/treatment plan I have been receiving from Dr. Kain at Methodist, so that was reassuring! With both of them working together I feel I am right where I need to be. And once, we get the last tumor out, it will BE the LAST tumor! 😊 Cause God has bigger and better things in store!! #nottodaysatan #iamcalled #iamfavored #iamhealed  

The day Overtime was planned

August 27th.  Casey is planning a youth outreach called Overtime at Tarkington High School practice fields on Sept 15th after the homecoming game from 10 pm-1 am! We will have the word of God, a live band, inflatables, a mechanical bull, human hungry hippo, food, games, and prizes!! I love seeing him in his element to reach this next generation! ✝️ Go, Casey, Go, God!! This is what the enemy thinks he can prevent us from doing by having tumors grow in my head. No, sir. It's not going to stop us. Just makes us push harder and faster toward the Kingdom of God and gives us more determination to reach the youth and lost! I don’t think the timing is a coincidence of my tumors and marriage with Casey and our serving in youth ministry. The enemy thought it would make us scared and fearful and quit the ministry, not at all. Buckle up, let’s go!

Why I introduced Faith Bracelets to my Sunday School Class

I’ve always enjoyed teaching preschoolers and elementary school-aged kids at Sunday School and Missionettes at church.

It’s always fun to hear things from their perspective and also very humbling to see the faith they have in believing God’s Word as is.

The colors on the faith bracelet (some like calling this the Salvation bracelet,  Jesus bracelet or even the Colors of Faith bracelet) are great reminders of their faith in Christ.

Best of all you only need:

• a box of Perler Beads
• a spool of 1 mm Stretch Magic Bead and Jewelry Cord
• a pair of scissors

How to make Faith Bracelets aka   Salvation Bracelets using regular Perler beads

1. Give each child a pre-measured bracelet thread and the six colors of faith:

Black (represents sin)

Red (represents Jesus’ Blood)

White (represents being made holy)

Blue (represents water baptism)

Green (represents growth)

Yellow (represents heaven)

2. Before the beads are strung to the thread, ensure a knot is made at the end of the thread to ensure beads don’t slip off. 

3. You can choose to make a bracelet repeating the colors of faith in sets (see the melted Perler beads bracelet example for reference)

or choose to use just one color of each representative bead.

When doing this, ensure the knot is not made at the end of the thread but close to the one-fourth point, to ensure the beads stay put in the center of the bracelet.

In a similar way, tie the finishing knot right next to the last bead (yellow).

How to make a Faith Bracelets aka   Salvation Bracelets using melted Perler beads

We also really like the way the bracelets look when you use melted beads.

This is an alternative if you have a little extra time.

1. Now before you go into melting the beads or stringing them as is, have your kids separate the colors into bowls.

(Do this at home and separate the beads into zipped bags)

This is a great way to get them to identify colors, work as a team and practice precision and care.

(Impatient hands will result in beads flying all over the place so make sure you send out that warning beforehand.)

3. Heat your convection oven or toaster oven to 350 degrees.

Once it reaches that temperature, place your tray in the same for about 7 minutes and remove the tray once you see your beads looking like the beads in the photograph below.

*Note: When Perler beads melt the room will smell.

I cross-ventilated the kitchen and adjacent room before, during, and after I melted the beads to ensure the smell didn’t linger in the kitchen too long.

4. To begin making the bracelets, measure around the wearer’s wrist approximately and cut the thread with about 1 inch extra on either side.

Before you begin threading the beads, tie a knot or even a double knot on one side to ensure the beads don’t roll out.

5. Now, have the kids string the beads in this order to represent the colors of faith : 

Black-Red-White-Blue-Green-Yellow

How to print and share the Faith Bracelets and the cards

Print the salvation bracelet poem on white card stock.

Ensure you use the color option and not black and white when you print the cards, else the colors on your cards won’t show. 

If you’re looking for a reliable printer and a way to save on printing, consider the HP Envy 7640.

You can get these little bags to hold the beads and tie these to a pre-made hole made using a hole punch .

Or pre-make the bracelets and tie them to the hole with a ribbon, or place the same in a small bag.

Pass out the colors of faith bracelet and the card explaining the colors of faith bracelet meaning to kids in your Sunday School class, Bible class or Vacation Bible School as a memorable take-home craft.

You could very well make this a salvation bracelet lesson using the Bible references provided below the card.
