Tour as a prospective student

Take in the sights of Yale’s campus through the eyes of a residing student and see if you can imagine yourself becoming one! September through May, Monday through Saturday, you can tour the residential colleges, libraries, green spaces and historical landmarks all while chatting with your student guide.

The university also offers specialized science and engineering tours that are led by students studying in those fields. Find out about the exciting programs, projects and research currently taking place in their labs.

All the sessions for prospective Yalies start at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (38 Hillhouse Ave). If you’re walking there from New Haven Green, stop at the Blue State Coffee on Wall Street, a student hot spot opposite Silliman College, for a drink to go!

Alongside tours, there are many admissions events that you can join throughout the year including visiting a class and requesting an on-campus interview. Check out the admissions website for schedules and registration.

Tour as a visitor

From the Visitor Center on one side of New Haven Green (149 Elm Street), you can take your spot on one of the campus tours.  The tour starts with a very informative and playful video that gives a broad overview of what this university has to offer its students.  This 60-minute walking tour covers central campus and shares plenty of interesting details about Yale’s 300-year history as well as what life is like through the eyes of the student guide. Take a look in one of the 14 residential colleges, the impressive record-breaking libraries and walk the paths previously taken by Yale’s many famous alumni.

One of the best parts of the walking tours is getting to hear from the student guides!  Take advantage of your time to ask them questions and hear about their classes, extra-curriculars and student life in New Haven. Wondering where to go next for a snack or directions around the downtown area? Your guide will be happy to help!

Grassroots effort bears leaves

Leaves on a tree.

Throughout the past decade, over 100 trees have been planted across Yale’s campus as part of the staff service anniversary recognition program. The program, which started as a grassroots movement, has grown to include an annual Arbor Day celebration , a twice-a-year tree service project, a comprehensive tree care plan, and a dedicated budget.

From gifts to green

When Yale employees reach their 10-year work anniversary (and every subsequent 5-year milestone), they are eligible to select a gift from a catalog as part of the staff service recognition program. Brenda Naegel, whose team manages the program, was asked by a handful of colleagues about adding some green options to the catalog, which already included items like jewelry, electronics, smaller household appliances, and Yale-branded merchandise.

“Sometime in 2012, several individuals from different departments contacted me asking for other choices beyond what was offered on the standard gift list. It got me thinking about how this program could benefit the environment,” said Naegel, director of recognition and engagement.

Inspired, Naegel contacted colleagues in the Office of Sustainability and Urban Resources Initiative (URI) to discuss green alternatives. After two years of discussions that included forming an advisory committee and partnering with URI and the Office of Facilities to determine funding, where to place the trees, and maintenance schedules, an option to select a tree was added to the anniversary gift catalog.

“Since its inception, 101 service-anniversary trees have been planted across campus by 400 honorees and volunteers. Staff who choose a tree as their gift bring their families and managers to the tree service events,” said Naegel.

Staff tree plantings usually coincide with the Yale Day of Service , when alumni worldwide volunteer within their communities. This past April three trees—two red maples and a saucer magnolia—were planted outside Luce Hall on Hillhouse Avenue, to coincide with a panel discussion at the MacMillan Center highlighting Ethiopian Church Forests .

The exact locations of all the service trees can be found on URI’s online map .

Partners in planting

URI receives and tracks the service recognition orders and coordinates the spring and fall events—when tree planting conditions are optimal. The URI team has the equipment, tools, and expertise to support this exercise. Volunteers, including Yale students, alumni, and, on occasion, members of the New Haven community, also help dig, plant, and water the trees.

“We work closely with Facilities’ landscape and grounds team to determine what species of trees to order and where on campus to place them,” said Anna Pickett, development and outreach manager at URI. “We invite honorees to come and plant their trees or simply participate in the event.”

“I think it is neat that Yale has this option for staff to plant a tree and that it marks Arbor Day with many activities. Those trees are a great benefit to the campus and the environment. Individuals can visit their trees and know there is a special place on campus where they left a small legacy,” added William Carone, supervisor for landscape and grounds.

“Many of these trees will be here for 100 years or longer. I think this program is a nice way to honor staff and contribute to the overall beauty of the campus,” said Chris Ozyck, associate director at URI.

yale university alumni tours

“As Yale strives to be a leader in planetary solutions , we aim to practice and model environmental stewardship for our own community on campus. The plant-a-tree program is a great example of that. This staff recognition program has grown over the years and helps advance the stewardship of our campus,” said Amber Garrard, director for the Office of Sustainability. “The trees provide shade, improve air and water quality and biodiversity, enhance our green spaces to support mental and physical health, and encourage us to come together and build community as we plant, care for, and enjoy these trees.”

National Arbor Day Foundation Recognition

Over the past decade, the plant-a-tree program has expanded to include an annual Arbor Day celebration with nature walks, wellness sessions, and other learning opportunities.

After realizing that Yale might be eligible for national recognition for its Arbor Day activities and tree-planting program, Naegel explored the National Arbor Day Foundation’s (NADF) recognition criteria, saw a fit, and applied. For the past two years, the university has received Tree Campus Higher Education , an honor resulting from the collaborative efforts of the Campus Tree Advisory Committee made up of staff from the Office of Sustainability, Facilities, Office of Public Affairs and Communications, and URI.

Yale joins 411 university and college campuses across the U.S. in meeting the NADF’s five vigorous standards, two of which include an annual campus-wide celebration to enhance learning about the benefits of trees and 500 volunteer tree-planting hours by students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

Yale staff enjoyed tours and walks during sunny Arbor Day celebrations.

Yale University is committed to building a more sustainable world. Through innovative research, progressive practices, and community engagement, and guided by scientific consensus around the need to decarbonize, the Yale Planetary Solutions initiative is accelerating the university’s response to a rapidly changing planet, on campus and far beyond.

Yale Nursing Alumni Share Advice for the Class of 2024

Preparations are currently underway for Yale University’s 323 rd commencement, a tradition that includes splendid pageantry, meticulously planned tulip patterns, and a cloud of confetti streaming down onto the apricot velvet hoods of Yale School of Nursing (YSN) graduates.

In preparation for the next generation of Yale nurses and midwives advancing the school’s mission of better health for all people, alumni from across the previous six decades have weighed in to share their advice for the Class of 2024.

Responses have been lightly edited for style and clarity.

YSN Class of 1967

Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing

Yep, 52 years. Realize that your nursing education from Yale is a gift (you paid for it on many levels, but it is still a gift ). Every time you accept a new career challenge, see it as an opportunity to share the gift .  Stay patient-focused, no matter what policies and politics say. The Yale gift will open many doors, but not all of them should be walked through. Use your critical thinking skills to full advantage, not just at the bedside but at the conference table.

Limit your contact with “complainers.” Negativity is the most contagious of nosocomial infections in a hospital! Best wishes and congratulations!

YSN Class of 1977

Medical-Surgical CNS

Love what you do! Persevere, speak out, and always work from evidence in all aspects of your life and work!

YSN Class of 1982

Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing

Congratulate yourselves! The feelings of accomplishment you have today will reside with you forever and will serve as a foundation for things to come. You have been extraordinarily well-prepared! May you cherish the indefatigable spirit bestowed on you at Yale—now, go and seize the world to ensure better health for all!

YSN Class of 1985

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

1. Never say “Never!” I was never going to get a doctoral degree and was never going to go into academia or become a dean, for sure!

2. Challenge yourself to take calculated but at times scary risks.

3. Become professionally active and assume leadership roles.

4. Figure out what values guide your life and try to live by them. Relationships have always been important to me. That was reinforced for me at YSN where the curriculum was guided by the theoretical framework of Hildegard Peplau.

5. Become a strategic and visionary thinker. Communicate your ideas clearly and with passion.

6. Always be kind and humble.

YSN Class of 1991

Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing

All of nursing is about the relationship between you and your patients. As nurses, we can empower our patients to want to attain physical, mental, and spiritual health and well-being. By modeling good self-care and staying resilient, we can be a reflection of positive energy and hopefulness for our patients, who may be in medical and/or psychological crisis. Be that beacon that lights the path to healing and recovery.

My wish for you: May you all experience the joy I have felt in the nursing profession. Nursing education at YSN was the best decision I have ever made.

YSN Class of 1997

Pediatric Acute Care

Take your time and be patient with yourself as you start your careers. Never be afraid to ask questions and ask for help when you need it. Be kind to yourself and to others!

YSN Class of 2002

Associate Dean of Student Life

Congratulations Class of 2024! My first piece of advice is to take time to nurture yourself and recognize your accomplishment as a YSN graduate! Second, identify those in your life network who can be your biggest fans and resources and lean on them—particularly in the first year after graduation, as you begin to apply all that you have learned into your career. Last, keep in touch with each other and with YSN, and once you are settled, be open to precepting and supporting the students who are coming to YSN after you!

YSN Class of 2015

Nurse-Midwifery

Don’t let your job rob your family of your time, energy, and presence. If you have kids, prioritize spending time with them when they are small. There will always be more patients, or one more research paper to write, but you only get your kids as a toddler or an awkward 14-year-old for one year, so don’t squander those years working 60 hours a week and giving your kids whatever scraps are left over.

Chancellor’s Professors are endowed positions awarded to faculty who have demonstrated unusual academic merit and who are highly likely to continue producing notable achievement in scholarship.

“Mario Barnes and Courtney Cahill’s appointments as Chancellor’s Professors of Law underscore their outstanding scholarly contributions and commitment to advancing equality,” said UC Irvine School of Law Dean and Chancellor’s Professor of Law Austen Parrish . “Their expertise, leadership and dedication as educators enrich our academic community, reflecting our core values of academic excellence and inclusivity. We look forward to their continued impact in legal scholarship and beyond.”

More About Mario Barnes

yale university alumni tours

Professor Mario Barnes is a nationally recognized scholar for his research on the legal and social implications of race and gender, primarily in the areas of employment, education, criminal and military law. He is one of the leaders and organizers within the school of academics seeking to build stronger connections between empirical studies and Critical Race Theory. He writes and teaches in the areas of criminal law, constitutional law, national security law, and race and the law. Prof. Barnes returned to UC Irvine School of Law in spring 2022 after serving as the Toni Rembe Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Washington School of Law from 2018 to 2021.

At UC Irvine School of Law, Prof. Barnes taught the inaugural class in 2009 and was instrumental in developing the Law School’s curriculum and sense of community. Additionally, he served as the second senior associate dean for academic affairs, the first associate dean for faculty development and research, and helped launch the Center on Law, Equality and Race ( CLEAR ).  Before joining UC Irvine School of Law, he was a faculty member at the University of Miami School of Law; prior to that, he was a William H. Hastie Fellow at the University of Wisconsin School of Law.

Before entering academia, Prof. Barnes spent 12 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, including service as a prosecutor, defense counsel, special assistant U.S. attorney, and on the commission that investigated the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen. He retired from the Navy in 2013, after 23 years of combined active and reserve service.

Prof. Barnes earned both a bachelor’s degree (1990) and a J.D. from UC Berkeley (1995), and an LL.M. from the University of Wisconsin (2004). He was founder, Managing Editor and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the African-American Law & Policy Report (now Berkeley Journal of African-American Law and Policy).

Prof. Barnes is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an elected member of the American Law Institute, and a Distinguished Fellow of the National Institute of Military Justice. He received the AALS Ferguson Award in 2015 and was honored with the AALS Derrick A. Bell Jr. Award in 2008.  In 2023, he, along with his UCI Law colleague, Professor Kaaryn Gustafson , received the American Bar Foundation Fellows Outstanding Scholar Award , given for those who have engaged in outstanding scholarship in the law or in government.

More About Courtney Cahill

yale university alumni tours

Professor Courtney Cahill is a leading scholar of constitutional law, anti-discrimination law, sex equality, and LGBTQ equality. Interdisciplinary in scope, Prof. Cahill’s scholarship looks at the mutually constitutive relationship between sex equality and LGBTQ equality, as well as at the role that disgust plays in shaping regressive laws against women, sexual minorities, and non-traditional relationships and practices, including alternative reproduction.

Prof. Cahill is a two-time Dukeminier Award winner for her scholarship addressing LGBTQ rights. She has published in the Yale Law Journal, Harvard Law Review, Michigan Law Review, Northwestern University Law Review, Georgetown Law Journal, Minnesota Law Review, and North Carolina Law Review, among other journals.

Prof. Cahill earned a J.D. from Yale Law School (2001), a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature with a concentration in Italian from Princeton University (1999), and a B.A. in Classics and English Literature from Barnard College (1993). At Princeton, Prof. Cahill was a graduate fellow in the University Center for Human Values and a Fulbright fellow at the University of Florence and the Dante Society. While at Yale, she was the Chief Essays Editor for the Yale Law Journal, a Coker Fellow, and the recipient of the Colby Townsend Memorial Prize.

Prof. Cahill is the author of a forthcoming book entitled, “Busted: Policing Women on Top.” “Busted” surfaces the vast (and largely invisible) network of laws and social norms that discipline girls and women for being topless, sometimes in the home. Using five decades of criminal topless prosecutions as a window into the strategies on which the law relies to justify sexism and enforce regressive gender norms, “Busted” establishes a through-line from policing women from the waist up to policing women from the waist down, especially in a post-Dobbs world.

“It is an honor to be part of the stimulating and forward-thinking intellectual and teaching community at UC Irvine,” said Professor Cahill.  “I’m truly humbled to become a Chancellor’s Professor at this special institution.”
