Our top 5 things to do in Peru

Our Peru guided tours will reveal the best of Peru, from the mysteries of Machu Picchu to ancient Andean weaving and vibrant local markets.

Larco Museum

Located in an 18th-century vice-royal building in Lima, the Larco Museum houses an excellent collection of pre-Columbian artefacts. You’ll take a journey through Peru’s history, with chronological galleries that display 5,000 years of pre-Columbian history, including ceramics, jewellery, crowns, masks, garments and gold vases.

One of the top museums on the continent, Museo Inka is an incredible showcase of the Inca Empire. You can spend hours immersing yourself in the world of the Incas, with rooms full of crockery, textiles, jewellery, goldwork, models, ancient mummies and the world’s largest collection of queros (ceremonial wooden drinking vessels).

Gold Museum of Peru

The Gold Museum of Peru is a fantastic display of Peruvian gold craftsmanship. There are thousands of items from centuries of Peruvian history, including the earflaps and bracelets of the Vicus, the belts and earrings of the Frias, the masks and wristbands of the Nazca and the crowns of the Chancay.

Best museums in Peru

Our guided trips to Peru will reveal the country’s rich history through the top museums, from ancient Peruvian goldwork to the wondrous world of the Inca Empire.

Chifa is a Peruvian word used to describe a Chinese and Peruvian fusion style of cooking. Influenced by a wave of Chinese immigration in the late 19th century, chifa is now one of the most popular types of food in Peru. We recommend trying Pato Cuarto Tiempos and Arroz Chaufa.

Anticuchos can be traced all the way back to the Inca Empire, and today they’re one of the most beloved dishes found in street stalls and restaurants all over Peru. They’re a tasty meat skewer usually made with beef, and they’re served with bread or boiled potato on the end of the skewer.

Causa Rellena

A traditional potato dish of Peru, causa rellena is made from layers of spiced yellow mashed potatoes, tuna, chicken, avocado, black olives, mayonnaise and hard-boiled egg. This delicious dish was first made by women for the soldiers during the Pacific War in 1879, when food was hard to come by.

Best food in Peru

Peruvian cuisine is wonderfully diverse and our Local Specialists will show you the best places to try everything from traditional meat skewers to Chinese style chifa.

Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the  European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese  and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or  futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Taste your way through Peru on our  10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day  Inca Trail Express from Lima  tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every color, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day  Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colorful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day  Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savor the flavors of Lima on our 20 day  Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day  Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a  Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometers. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or traveled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our  9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colorful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has traveled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewelery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organized), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

1. Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

2. Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

3. Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

4. Carnaval

Each year before Lent cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

Eligible foreign nationals will be issued a free visitor permit in their passport upon arrival.

Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

What's the weather like in Peru?

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

What to wear in Peru

There are a few things to bear in mind no matter where or when you're going, though. Dressing in layers is key, as you’ll need to layer up and down as the weather changes throughout the day. Wear clothes made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen, cotton (although cotton doesn't dry well in high humidity) or merino wool; merino is particularly good for hiking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature. Sportswear is also a good shout for hot weather as it’s lightweight and quick-drying.

What are the toilets like in Peru?

Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if traveling on the Inca Trail.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Peru?

Most hotels, large retailers and tourist attractions accept credit cards but will usually charge a fee (about 7%) for using them. Expect to pay cash when dealing with small vendors, family-run restaurants and market vendors.

What is ATM access like in Peru?

ATMs can be found in most of Peru's major cities and tourist areas. ATMs are far less common in rural areas and small villages so have enough cash to cover purchases when traveling away from the larger cities.

Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru a LGBTQI-friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQI-rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQI community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQI-travelers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.

Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Absolute Peru

"In general this was an amazing trip that took us to many different places in the southern part part of Peru, from coastal area to the Andes mountains and the Amazon jungle. This tour gives a good understanding of both rural and modern lifestyle, as well as cultural and historical insight. Our tourleader (Manuel) did a great job. Accommodation was good as well as meals. (we paid most of them ourselves) Overnight busrides should be avoided if possible as most people don't sleep well on a bus ! Tipping to many drivers and local guides adds a big amount to the cost of the trip. We suggest that G Adventures pay a decent salary to their employees and partners instead of constantly asking for tips, which at times can be quite annoying. Or simply include tipping in the tour price."

5 Day Cusco Travel Package: Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Maras Moray.

"This tour operator is top class! Although I booked a 5-day tour in Cusco and Machu Picchu only like a month before my trip, they worked quickly and efficiently and achieved to organise everything as described. Hotels, transfers and guides are all first class and I felt completely safe as a solo traveller. Although I did not speak Spanish, I never left out since all our tour guides spoke also English. Waldir, the mastermind of the whole organisation, contacted me daily and was ready to help if needed and give useful tips and advice regarding the itinerary. The communication was perfect. The itinerary was absolutely balanced and exciting! As Waldir told me on the way back to the airport, it is not customary in the traditional language to say goodbye, only "until we meet again". Thank you Waldir and the whole team of Kantu Perù Tours for the incredible moments and the once-in-a-lifetime experience, and until next time!!!"

Inca Adventures - 7 Days (Lima, Ica, Machu Picchu & Cusco) with Domestic Flights

"The tour company was amazing. Very accommodating. Our flight was delayed 14 hours and they rearranged the activities so we didn't miss anything (without being asked). Food and accommodations were good. We had a blast on the dune buggies, sand boarding and hiking. Manuel and Julio Cesar (JC) were knowledgeable, friendly and great all round. 10 ot of 10 would recommend."

Machu Picchu Adventure Tour

Machu Picchu Adventure

"I think the hotels could be improved as well as more details about the cities. For example, nothing I read said that Aquas Calientes was an uphill climb with no option of transportation. Additionally, it would have been nice to know what time we would be arriving in places in order to book tours or other options. I booked a tour on my day in Lima in mid-afternoon but our flight didn’t make it back until much later so I was out that money. It also would be nice to give us a prepared list of recommended restaurants in the cities/villages so we can research and not waste time. Additionally, it would have been nice to have the option to leave Peru immediately following Machu Picchu instead of three more days. Finally, a better description should be given of the physical activities, like climbing to the top of the guards tower at Machu Picchu. Had I known it was so challenging, I would have prepared myself accordingly."

"My husband and I had the best time on our tour and it was truly all thanks to our amazing tour guide Wilber. His knowledge is incredible and truly made it an enriching tour. He made me appreciate the amazing feats of the Incas and there is no way I would have enjoyed out time as much without his guidance. He made sure we had the best experience possible, adjusting the schedule to make it work for us and it truly gave up the best experience we possibly could have had. Thank you Wilber!!"

"We are a family of 4 people and we travelled to South America to meet with one of the wonders of the world that is located in Cusco region. During the itinerary of 8 days we did the classic inca Trail 4 days that was absolutely an amazing experience! The service was great!! Our guide Edwin was a very enthusiastic and professional guide who helped us with all our questions and needs. Which was awesome! Next to the guide and cook we also had porters whom carried all our staff from day one till the last day. Tents, food, drinks, clothes, etc. The guys were super friendly and made our trip even more special. We would highly recommend the tour and also the organization! Inkayni team made us feel very special and helped us a lot!"

Classic Inca Trail Trek 4D/3N to Machu Picchu (Group service )

"What an incredible experience!!! Our 4 day trek was guided by Saul G and Humberto, who were phenomenal. They were informative, entertaining, a good balance between keeping us in line and letting us go at our own pace, all while keeping safety at the forefront. If you read the itinerary, I don't need to tell you what each day is, because it's so spot on. But, I'm an avid hiker and enjoyed every minute of the hike. My husband, more of a novice, found the first day tough finding his pace and getting used to elevation but Saul G and Humberto provided everyone with great tips. Our chef Alessandro created feasts beyond our wildest imagination, not a meal went by that we weren't surprised by the variety and the amount of food. There was a vegetarian and a celiac in our group, and each meal they received their meals with the same gusto as the rest of us. The entire porter team, headed by Cesar, is admirable. The hospitality, the happy smiling faces, the ease that they run the trails carrying our tents, camp supplies and Duffles was such an incredible sight. I can't say enough about the team mentioned, and the company for their organization, their respect for one another, and the experience. 10/10 recommend!!!"

Reviews of Peru Tours

"A busy beautiful experience of a lifetime! Wish it never ended, met so many amazing people and saw some great sights."
"Excellent trip. Well planned and executed with good guides, hotels and transportation."
"The "5 day Cusco Travel Package" with Kantu Tours was awesome. I had a great time. I really enjoyed the city of Cusco, Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and all of the different tours. I was very impressed with the professionalism and communication of Waldir, who was the trip coordinator. All of the tour guides were great, but I will say that Marco was exceptional. He was very knowledgeable, professional, and passionate about his culture. For feedback, I'd say having some reading material about the various sites would be great, as well as some recommendations on local attractions, food options, or additional sites to add on. It would be nice as well to have more continuity with other travelers, which I know can be tough with everyone on different schedules. Overall, I highly recommend this tour."

Peru - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca city in the Andes of Peru

You might only know about Machu Picchu , but the fabled city is just the beginning. Peru was once home to a thriving pre-Columbian civilization that dominated the region before the Spanish. The Incas were responsible for creating some of the most beautiful archaeological wonders, combining striking architecture on the land of great natural beauty. To this day, Peru retains its alluring and enchanting features that were carved by the ancient Incas.

Tour Highlights

  • Hike the Inca Trail , or its other famous alternative routes like the Lares Trek or Salkantey Trek .
  • Visit Machu Pichhu
  • Go sandboarding in the Peruvian desert
  • Look for macaws in the Amazon jungle
  • Explore the deep canyons of Colca
  • Visit the floating islands of Lake Titicaca
  • Trek the Cordillera Blanca, the highest range of the Peruvian Andes

Travel Tips

  • Machu Picchu can become very crowded during high season. Beat the crowds by staying nearer the site the night before your visit, and be sure to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
  • Stores often shut down for the afternoon siesta, so always plan your meals in advance.
  • It's advisable to not drink the tap water. Many hotels provide bottled water, which should also be used for brushing your teeth.
  • Altitude sickness can be a real issue for some people visiting Peru. Try combatting it with coca leaf tea, a Peruvian remedy that is readily available across the country. Chewing the leaves can have the same effect.
  • On a holiday to Peru, don't skip a visit to Lima . Peru's largest city is often overlooked for hotspot tourist destinations but is full of great food and interesting museums that you'll regret missing out on.
  • Always carry cash when travelling through Peru as many shops will not accept credit cards.

Peru has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Peru before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Peru, do check out our Peru Travel Guide for more information.

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the 15th-century archaeological site is a sight to behold and should not be missed. One of the most popular ways to get there is a multi-day trek along the Inca Trail from the city of Cusco. Another exciting way to head to the citadel is on a two-hour train ride from the Sacred Valley town of Ollantaytambo. The best time to visit the magical city is in April and May when the rainy season has passed, and the surrounding mountains are vivid.
  • Discover the Sacred Valley :  Once the beating heart of the Incan Empire, the Sacred Valley is still a magical place to explore. The valley is home to quaint villages, and ancient archaeological sites, and is, of course, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Visit the bohemian town of Pisac to see its beautiful hilltop citadel and shop in one of the best handicraft markets in the region. Discover the secrets of the Ollantaytambo Inca fortress in the town of the same name and enjoy some outdoor adventures like trekking, rock climbing, and mountain biking in Urubamba. The best time to visit the Sacred Valley is during the dry season between June and September.
  • Hike the wilderness of Cusco:  Hiking in and around Cusco is a must for the region is blessed with incredible landscapes and breathtaking scenery. Head to the pristine glacial-fed Humantay Lake for a lake-side hike or trek up the slopes of Rainbow Mountain. This high-altitude hike is very popular, but it can be cold and windy, so be prepared and know your limits. Another lovely off-the-beaten-track hike is to the three lakes of Kinsa Cocha and you can do this alone or with a guide. There are also plenty of different hiking trails in and around Machu Picchu, from long, multi-day treks to short two-day hikes to the magnificent citadel.
  • Explore the ancient Inca Trail:  Follow in the footsteps of an ancient civilization as you make your way along the Inca Trail to the 15th-century citadel of Machu Picchu. Hailed as one of the greatest multi-day treks in the world, this is an experience of a lifetime that you should not miss. Constructed over 500 years ago by the Incas, the full trail winds its way from Chile to Peru for 40,000 kilometers, passing through forested valleys, historic Inca ruins, and ancient archaeological sites. Begin your trek in the old capital of Cusco and make your way through the Sacred Valley to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. Finally, head up to the Sun Gate overlooking the magnificent Machu Picchu. The best time to hike the Inca Trail and visit Machu Picchu is between July and August in the dry season.
  • Travel to the heart of the Peruvian Amazon:  Exotic, wild, and mysterious, the Amazon jungle has lured intrepid travelers into its untamed world for centuries. Take a short trip into the jungle from Puerto Maldonado and cruise down the Amazon in a canoe, searching for rare giant otters and caimans. Hop on a riverboat in Lima and head down the Amazon River, exploring Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, spotting unusual wildlife like pink dolphins, sloths, and brightly colored toucans. The best time to venture into the Peruvian Amazon is from May to September when wildlife congregates on the riverbanks to drink.
  • Relish the colonial architecture in Lima:  The dark days of the conquistadors may have left an indelible mark on Peru’s history, but Spain’s long colonial rule has also left magnificent architectural gems. From lavish presidential palaces to beautiful monasteries, Lima has its fair share of noteworthy architectural sights. Stroll around the checkerboard streets of Lima and take in the grand patios, ornate arches, elegant courtyards, and beautifully sculptured façades of age-old buildings. If you are planning a trip to Peru , you will want to know about the best time to visit, as well as check out all the available tours. You may also wish to learn more about the top things to do in Peru . And once you are sure of your destinations and activities in Peru, you may want to consider how many days to stay in Peru . We generally recommend staying at least seven days in Peru , but to get the most out of your trip, plan a stay for 10 days or more.

If you are not sure whether you should be looking for a budget tour, a luxury tour, or perhaps a completely customized tour, check all our Peru tours at the top of this page. Peru is an amazing country to visit, and there may be other key factors that you wish to consider before traveling. So please check our “ Peru travel guide ” that offers a lot of relevant information about traveling to the country.

Tours in Peru - Questions and Answers

The best time to visit Peru is between the months of May and September. Corresponding with the dry season, temperatures in the country at this time hover between 16°C to 22°C. But more importantly, traveling to Peru during this time means that there is little fear of getting caught in the country’s torrential monsoon. Another less popular but still good time to visit Peru is between October and December. A shoulder period between dry and monsoon seasons, the climate during this time of year is generally fine, although skies are cloudier and you might have to dodge the odd shower. The wettest months are January and February. It is still possible to visit destinations such as Lake Titicaca during the rainy season, but the Inca Trail is closed for travelers. Find more information here .

Given its wealth of attractions, there are many reasons why you should consider Peru trips that last between ten days and two weeks . This will give you enough time to see top-rated sites, such as Manu National Park, while also discovering the country’s history and culture in more far-flung and as-yet-unknown destinations. You can still take in a number of attractions even if you can only spare one week in Peru , however, the time constraint would mean that you will have to limit your exploration to a destination or two. For a more detailed rundown, check out our travel guide on how many days to spend in Peru .

Personal contact is an important part of Peruvian culture. Not only do Peruvians tend to stand closer to each other than you might at home, but physical contact (especially on one’s arms and back) is also common. You should avoid the desire to step away, as this is considered offensive. Greetings are important, with handshakes along with a few words of greeting being common. Give the elderly your respect if you are young and leave your seat on public transportation for them.

If you live close to sea level, then you will realize what a significant effect higher elevations can have on your body upon arriving in Cusco. Doctors recommend at least two days of acclimatization before considering any strenuous activities, such as going for the popular two or four-day hikes to Machu Picchu. A nice way to spend this time would be by exploring the historic center of Lima or taking one of the many less-demanding day hikes that are available in the country. If you plan on trekking, you can read our article on the ultimate trekking guide in Peru .

You should ensure you are up to date with any vaccinations that are standard in your home country, such as those providing protection against tetanus and measles. A medical professional may suggest boosters for these vaccinations. Other diseases they may suggest vaccinations for are hepatitis B, diphtheria, and rabies, all of which are potentially deadly. Yellow fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a risk in the country’s east. There is a risk of malaria in the country’s northeast, around Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon. Since there is currently no vaccination against this disease, prophylactic drugs are recommended. Find more information here .

Peru is not expensive for travelers and we recommend it as a top pick for visitors on a budget . Most travelers can get by on USD 30 to USD 40 per day, including transport, accommodation, and food. Tackling the Inca Trail and exploring Machu Picchu are must-do attractions but also relatively costly. ATMs are the quickest way to withdraw neuvos soles, as the country’s currency is called, on the road and visa cards are easily accepted. Many ATMs have an English language option, too. They can be found in some airports, inside banks, and as stand-alone units in major towns and cities. If you are looking for other destinations to visit on a budget, find more information here .

Spanish is the most-spoken European language in Peru, alongside several local languages like Quechan and Aymara. Those involved in the tourism industry and those in popular destinations such as Lima and Cusco will speak some English, while guides leading tours for English-speaking travelers will have a good hold of the language. However, knowing a few words of Spanish is always useful.

More information about Peru

Located on the west coast of South America , Peru is a country that ignites the imagination of travelers worldwide, with its fascinating ancient civilizations, wondrous natural attractions, and iconic monuments. Bordered by Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile,  and Brazil, and with a vast coastline along the Pacific Ocean, a tour of Peru is one of the must-do travel experiences. The country has a diverse landscape, stretching from the arid plains of Nazca , where the mysterious Nazca Lines are located, to the high altitude peaks of the Andes. The legacy of the Inca Empire and the remnants of this mighty civilization, preserved in monuments such as Machu Picchu and the Rachqui Ruins, are unmissable sights on a vacation to Peru, along with the colonial architecture of its colorful cities, such as the capital, Lima. Peru encourages visitors to be adventurous, with a multitude of activities on offer, from sailing on Lake Titicaca to trekking in the Sacred Valley . The famous Inca Trail , reserved for the most adventurous of travelers, is perhaps the most famous of all trekking routes, culminating in an ascent to Machu Picchu . One of the region's most prosperous economies, with a huge tourist industry, Peru has become increasingly popular in recent years, with travelers keen to tick its many sights off of their bucket lists.

Nature in Peru

Peru is a megadiverse country, and the sanctuary of many of the world’s species of animal, bird and plant life, including a large number of endemic species. From the Altiplano to the Amazon Basin , the country’s diverse geography and accompanying wildlife makes it a paradise for nature lovers. The Amazon Rainforest in Peru, known for its heavy rainfall and tropical, humid climate, is home to a plethora of weird and wonderful animals species such as the pink river dolphin, found in the Amazon River , jaguars, giant otters, and primates, along with an impressive one-third of the worlds bird species. The national bird is the bizarre Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, whilst the mighty Andean Condor is the highlight of Peru’s Colca Canyon , a deep river canyon in the south of the country where viewpoints such as the Cruz del Condor allowing onlookers to watch the flight of huge Condors , the largest flying bird in the world. The uninhabited Ballestas Islands, located off the coast of the port city of Pisco , is home to large populations of sea lions, pelicans, Peruvian boobies, and Humboldt penguins, and is a popular day-trip destination for travelers on a vacation package to Peru. Aside from the country’s rich wildlife, Lake Titicaca stands out as an incredible natural attraction, owing to its immense size and altitude, securing it the title of the world’s highest navigable body of water and the largest lake in South America. In Andean traditions, it is thought to be the birthplace of the Sun God , and its glistening, reflective waters, which stretch across the border between Bolivia and Peru, are home to numerous floating islands, such as Taquile and Isla del Sol, where traditional communities live and work. Tour packages to Peru all-inclusive offer travelers a chance to discover the great variety of the country’s bountiful nature in one exciting trip.

History of Peru

Peru’s history can be traced back to the 4th century BC and to the ancient societies of the Chavin, Moche, and the Nasca. The most well-known era of Peruvian history came later, in the 15th century with the enigmatic Inca civilization, which emerged as a powerful state in this period. Growing out of their capital in Cusco , this revered civilization started as a small ethnic group of Quechuas , but soon their influence expanded and incorporated their neighbors under the great Emperor Pachacuti . The Inca Empire eventually controlled most of the Andean region, stretching into modern-day Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile,  and Argentina, and are thought to have had a population of approximately 16 million inhabitants, who were encouraged to worship the Sun God, Inti and practice human sacrifice as a means to appease the gods. This mysterious civilization did not last for long, as by 1532, Spanish conquistadors had captured the Inca Emperor in the Battle of Cajamarca , marking the beginning of the end for the Incas. The emperor was later killed and a long conquest ensued, resulting in many deaths for the indigenous community, caused by both disease and warfare. Spanish victory came in 1572 , with colonization and the destruction of much of the culture, monuments, religion, and heritage of the Incas following shortly afterward. Spanish language, culture, and Catholicism replaced the indigenous beliefs and way of life, although even today, populations continue to speak in their native languages, such as Quechua. Most travelers on a  Peru vacation are excited to discover the lost ruins of the Inca Empire , such as Machu Picchu, and to understand the values and traditions of this iconic civilization.

Culture in Peru

With a population of approximately 32 million, made up of a variety of ethnicities, Peru has a diverse culture, ranging from Spanish influences, as seen in the language and architecture, to indigenous traditions as demonstrated in the varied folklore and musical styles and dances, which often include references to ancient beliefs surrounding spirits and the Sun God. The indigenous communities are also well known for their arts and crafts, such as the brightly colored Andean clothing, with their intricate embroidery and vibrant patterns. The different regions of Peru possess their own unique influences and traditions; in the highlands of the Andes you can expect to see folklore displays with flute and drum music, ritualistic dance, and masks, whilst down in the Amazon , tribal influences are more evident. In the coastal cities, there is an obvious Spanish character, both in the cuisine, terraced cafes, and architecture. In contrast, travel through the Sacred Valley and you may feel as if you have been transported back in time, as you pass through the traditional villages of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, with their authentic markets, artisan textile weavers, Quechua- speaking communities and monolithic temple ruins, considered sacred to the inhabitants. Despite the modern feel of the coastal capital of Lima, you are never far from making contact with the ancient traditions and culture of the country’s earliest civilizations.A trip to Peru will allow you to walk in the footsteps of the Inca’s, get up close to some of the world's most diverse and unique wildlife, uncover the secrets of Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines and realize your dreams of navigating Lake Titicaca. A paradise for the most intrepid travelers, a tour of Peru is a must-do bucket list experience.

Peru Vacation Packages and Tours

travel packages to peru

Peru offers the visitor on a Peru vacation an extraordinary array of wonders both historical and geographical. The country is divided into three regions. There is the coastal Pacific plain on which the capital, Lima is located, the Altiplano of the Andean mountain range and the jungle which covers approximately half of Peru in the Amazonian Rainforest . The inhabitants of Peru are a mixture of ethnic backgrounds (Spanish, Indigenous and African) and contribute greatly to the cuisine and the music of the country.

Lima, situated on the Pacific Ocean, is a large busy city. The centre or Centro Historico as it is known locally is a UNESCO World Heritage site based on its beautiful pre-Hispanic and Colonial architecture. The oldest buildings can be found in an area called Barrios Altos. One museum that is a must-visit is the Museo Larco which relates the country’s history in an interesting and engaging way. The upscale suburb of Miraflores situated on the ocean with its many parks and gardens is where a large number of tourists stay. It has many high-rise modern buildings and is home to a number of hotels and restaurants, all to be enjoyed on Peru tours.

Cusco , also known as Cuzco, is a magical city with a rich archaeological legacy. It was the capital of the Inca Empire and as such is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Cusco is easy to walk around to get to know this colourful walled city. The beautiful and lively Plaza de Armas in the very centre consists of churches, shops, restaurants and bars. The vibrant San Pedro Market is an excellent place to watch the locals do their shopping. Nearby is Sacsayhuaman which is approximately 1 mile/2 kilometres outside of Cusco. It is something of a climb to reach on foot but well worth the effort due to its ambience and its Inca relics.

  • Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley is not too far from Cusco and is so named because the Incas found it to have the best land. Situated in the Urubamba Valley, it contains numerous archaeological remains. Visit Pisac, famous for its Indian market with excellent handicrafts for sale and also its Inca ruins. On Peru tours, another interesting town in the valley is Ollantaytambo which is laid out as it was in Inca times. It is an old town built over a period of 500 years by the Incas. The Inca ruins here are large of religious significance and date back to the time when the Incas defeated the Spanish in a battle here.

  • Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the true wonders of the world. Only discovered in 1911, the name in the ancient language of the Incas, Quechan, means “Old Mountain”. It is actually a citadel perched high on top of a mountain and was the centre of worship for the Incas. It also served as an astronomical observatory.

The Inca Trail is a well-known trekking route on Peru vacation packages which starts 3 to 4 days of walking outside Machu Picchu arriving eventually at the site of Machu Picchu. It is 43 kilometres/27 miles in length. This stone-paved trail is not only Peru’s most popular trek but one of the most spectacular walks in Latin America.

  • Lake Titicaca

If one takes the train from Cusco to the south of the country to Puno on Lake Titicaca , the journey will be awe-inspiring as it travels through the most amazing mountain scenery.

Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake and is shared by both Peru and Bolivia . Puno is a port on the banks of the lake and also a picturesque hillside city. It is here that one can see many local women and men in their traditional clothing. One of the main attractions is the floating islands of Uros. These do actually float and are made of reed as are the houses and the boats of the local residents. Not too far away is the uninhabited Isla de la Luna known for its mythological significance for the Incas.

Peru’s second-largest city is Arequipa located on the southern coastal plain of the country below the Andean Altiplano. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its well-preserved old buildings and many churches. There are over 250 colonial buildings here. The Plaza de Armas is a beautiful square in the centre. Other attractions are the magnificent cathedral and the Convento de Santa Catalina, the most visited building in the city. The latter is actually a “city within a city” with narrow streets and a timeless air

Not far from Arequipa is the amazing Colca Canyon, the world’s deepest canyon and twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The area is astoundingly scenic. There are endless trails in the area which link around 14 villages which have been preserved from early Colonial times.

Amazon Jungle

One other region which is of interest on Peru tours is the Amazon Jungle best travelled on board a small cruise vessel which will take you deep into the heart of the jungle to the meeting point of two Amazon River tributaries.

Other Places to Visit

One very unusual place to visit is Paracas on the Pacific Ocean. It is from here that one can view the Nazca Lines in a small aircraft. These are an age-old mystery. They are an area of land seen only properly from the air consisting of complex designs up to 300 metres/980 feet in length. They consist of vast drawings of figures of animals, insects and deities. They were only discovered in 1927 and date back to as early as 300 BC.

Peru is a destination for travellers looking for something off the beaten track. If you are looking for a unique trip, book one of our Peru tours won't be disappointed!

Peru Vacation

Sitting on South America’s picturesque west coast, Peru is rich in ancient cultural history, natural attractions and man-made wonders. This nation is known as the home of the ancient Inca civilization and is famous for its diverse landscapes.

Peru Hotel + Flights

You have 7,093 hotels to pick from on Expedia starting at CA $91 a night, so we’re confident there’s one to suit your budget. If you want to be kind to your credit card, bundle your hotel and flight bookings into a Peru Vacation Package — you’ll save even more if you add car rental and experiences too. Cusco is bursting with amazing sights, so why not book a tour to the breathtaking rainbow-coloured landscape of Vinicunca Mountain?

Your Peru Vacation Itinerary

Day 1-2: To get to Lima, most travellers fly into Jorge Chavez International Airport. Collect your bags, check in to your hotel and then explore the top attractions. Larco Museum, Huaca Pucllana Pyramid and San Francisco Convent and Catacombs are fantastic places to start.

Day 3-5: Take a short flight to Iquitos, the Peruvian gateway to the Amazon. Visit indigenous villages and cruise down the mighty Amazon River. Keep an eye out for wildlife like pink river dolphins and three-toed sloths.

Day 6-9: Fly to Cusco and explore this charming high-altitude city before heading to arguably Peru’s most famous attraction, Machu Picchu. Take the train to this lost Incan city and marvel at one of the world's most incredible archaeological sites.

Peru Information

Join in the celebrations on Fiestas Patrias (Peruvian Independence Day) held July 28 and 29 each year. You’ll find festivities in parks and plazas across the country, with the largest held in Lima.

Hidden above the clouds, the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu lie cradled among the Andes mountains. A bucket-list item for many visitors. Travel to where archeological ruins echo mighty indigenous cultures. Visit beautiful Lake Titicaca, the largest lake in South America and, according to Andean legend, the birthplace of civilization. Whether you want to trace the mystery about the Nazca Lines geoglyphs, savor the traditional Peruvian delights of Lima after a day of bird watching on the Ballestras Islands, shop for hand-painted beads in the capital city of Cusco, or wander Chinchero in the Sacred Valley (where legend has it the rainbow was born), Peru will leave you breathless.

Trip Reviews & Photos

Machu Picchu These days, Machu Picchu is synonymous with Peru. These massive ruins, relics of the Inca Civilization, are located in the Cuzco region. Towering almost 8,000 feet above the forest, clouds, and small gateway town of Aguas Calientes, it is fortified like a castle and was built around the year 1450. Translated from the Inca language of Quechua, this citadel means "old peak." Once you've entered the city in the clouds, looking down over the peaceful valley and river below, it's easy to imagine yourself as an ancient Incan king surveying his domain. Also, try imagining the effort it would have taken to transport all the building materials to his perched fortress. For intrepid travelers, you can hike the rock-hewn stairs even further up to Huayna Picchu, from which you can look down onto the ancient city. (And it's a great photo op!) Voted as one of the world's "New Seven Wonders of the World," this site is a must-see! Sacred Valley Nestled in the Andes Mountains and spanning from Pisac to include all of the lands along the Urubamba River to Machu Picchu, Peru's Sacred Valley was a coveted location in the ancient Incan Empire. Desirable for its lower elevation, warmer temperatures, and ability to grow maize in the valley, these conditions were optimal for thriving during the civilization's development. Today, visitors flock to this region to witness the heart of the ancient Inca Empire, explore the quaint colonial villages and the hilltop citadel Ollantaytambo, and shop at artisan craft markets. Cusco Perched high in the Andes Mountains, the city of Cusco is as cultural and charming as it is ancient. Cusco's central plaza is flanked by its iconic two-steeple, red-hued cathedral and surrounded by arched stone shopping and dining promenades. It is as good a place as any in the country to sit, relax, and absorb Peru's rich heritage. Practice your Spanish with local cab drivers and merchants throughout your day. Cross paths with an alpaca. People come to Cusco to get to Machu Picchu, but they stay in Cusco to experience the friendly locals, delicious Peruvian cuisine, and ancient history that the city offers. Alpacas Very common in South America, alpaca herds typically graze in the Andes Mountains of southern Peru at very high altitudes. Regarded as an especially sacred commodity in Peru, alpacas have been viewed as necessary ever since Simon Bolivar signed a decree protecting all camelids, which includes alpacas, llamas, and vicunas, among other animals, in 1827. An entire industry has evolved around the alpaca, as many Peruvian citizens have coveted its fleece over the years. Back during the establishment of the Incan Empire, the fleeces were reserved for royalty, but today, the alpaca fleece is a booming industry and a favorite souvenir for visitors. You'll likely see alpacas grazing lazily at Machu Picchu. In Cuzco, indigenous women will bring their alpacas into town to take photos with the tourists. Just be sure they don't chew your backpacks!  Lake Titicaca Straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is the largest lake in South America. It is also known as the "highest navigable lake" worldwide, with a surface elevation of 12,507 feet. Draped in a legend of its own, Lake Titicaca is thought to be the exact place where Mama Ocllo and Manco Capac, the founders of the Inca Empire, appeared from the deep waters of the lake. Also, Titicaca is home to more than 530 marine species, especially abundant water birds and endangered water frogs. You can take a boat across the lake to visit several of its floating island towns, artificially built by the locals out of buoyant reeds. They live and work on these islands in the middle of the lake. Lima From large urban areas to pre-Incan pyramids, Lima, the "City of Kings," is a place of great contrast. This stately capital was founded on January 18, 1535, in Peru's central coastal region, by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. As a result, Lima served as an overnight stop for those seeking glimpses of Cusco and Machu Picchu throughout history. Still, today this city is an economic hub and is home to about one-third of Peru's total population. From its fascinating Historical Center and artifacts at the Archaeological Museum of Rafael Larco Herrera to authentic Peruvian dining, Lima is a place with a thousand stories to share.

From  watching paragliders transcend the cliffsides while trying your hand at surfing, to shopping in the bustling Miraflores district and tasting dishes from some of the world’s best restaurants, Lima is a destination that truly has it all.

For those passing through on their way to the Amazon or Machu Picchu, Lima will entice you to stop and stay a while with its rich culture, temperate climate, sea views and endless activities.

Lima’s Miraflores neighborhood offers high-end shopping, abundant green space and plenty of eateries overlooking the sea.

Walk through Lima’s Historic Center for beautiful squares, churches and architecture showcasing the city’s long and noble history.

Take off to Cusco for a visit to the heart of the Andes where you can admire a wonder of the modern world.

  • Machu Picchu Slide 3 of 3: Take off to Cusco for a visit to the heart of the Andes where you can admire a wonder of the modern world.

As the third largest and second most populous city in South America, Lima is brimming with things to do in each of its five distinct neighborhoods – artsy and bohemian Barranco, upscale Miraflores, the business district of San Isidro, the Historic Center and the travel hub of Callao. Plaza de Armas is a central point in the city, steps away from stunning palaces, cathedrals and the San Francisco Church and Convent, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  From there, travelers can admire colonial architecture, or head to nearby Miraflores to explore miles of park trails and art installations overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

History buffs can learn about Lima through its various museums: see collections of pre-Hispanic objects at the Larco Museum, explore fine art at the MALI or enjoy contemporary pieces at the MATE.

Plus, Lima is accessible to some of the world’s most incredible natural and world wonders. Fly to Cusco to explore Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and other ancient Incan ruins. Ica, five hours south of Lima by car or bus , is home to Huacachina – a village built around a picturesque oasis, where you can sandboard, race dune buggies and watch the sun set over the desert. Fly to Iquitos in the north, Pucallpa in central Peru or Puerto Maldonado in the south for access to the lush rainforests, abundant wildlife and unique experiences of the Amazon. Or, if the hiking in and around Machu Picchu isn’t enough, travel north to Huaraz for glacial lakes beneath snowcapped Andes vistas.

Whether just passing through Lima or staying awhile, you are unlikely to leave empty-handed. Find high-end retail shops in Larcomar, an outdoor mall overlooking the ocean in the heart of Miraflores. Try your hand at haggling at handcraft markets around the city, which offer everything from alpaca sweaters to pisco.  Whether you’re searching for the necessary gear you forgot to pack before heading to the mountains or simply a colorful souvenir to take home, Lima’s shops are sure to offer what you need and more.

Home to top culinary institutes, world-renowned chefs, award-winning restaurants and a lively dining scene on top of it all, it’s no wonder Lima is widely regarded as the unofficial gastronomical capital of South America.

Enjoy the perks of visiting the only South American capital on the coast as you indulge in fresh seafood, whether in the upscale restaurants of Miraflores, at the fishing docks in Chorrillos, or as you sample ceviche – a dish invented in Peru – in local mercados (markets).  For foodies looking to splurge on a once-in-a-lifetime meal, you can find Japanese-Peruvian fusion at Maido or indigenous Peruvian ingredients artfully prepared at Central Restaurante, both repeatedly ranked on the top 10 list of World’s Best Restaurants.

Nightlife can also be found in all directions in the city home to the Pisco sour. Dance the night away in Barranco, enjoy the boutique bars in the upscale neighborhood of San Isidro or explore the club scene in Chacarilla.

Delta Vacations flight + hotel packages include round-trip airfare aboard a Delta or Partner Airline flight to Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM).
