How do I get back spin in PGA Tour 2K23?

Since PGA Tour 2K23 isn't out yet, all we have to go off is the method from the previous game. Fortunately there's a good chance that it'll remain very much the same, so check out how to add some back spin.

To do it, you'll need to press down the right shoulder button on your controller when setting up a shot. On PlayStation this is R1, and on Xbox it's RB.

This pulls up a vertical blue bar across the middle of the screen, with a white blip inside it. That marks the part of the ball you're aiming to hit with the club. Simply pull down the left thumbstick to the bottom of the meter, and it'll translate to back spin when you swing the club and hit the ball.

Of course, it isn't quite as simple as that. As you'd expect, the more audacious a shot you try to hit, the less likely you are to pull it off. You'll need to time your release properly, otherwise you'll barely send it across the course.

You'll need plenty of practice, but if you remember to put on a good amount of power and time your release properly, you should start hitting back spin shots in no time.

Why do I need back spin in PGA Tour 2K23?

While it may seem a complicated shot type to pull off, you'll definitely want to incorporate back spin into your PGA Tour 2K23 repertoire.

Perhaps its best benefit is allowing the ball to travel in a different direction once it hits the ground. Off a normal shot, the ball would continue to roll forwards in the direction you hit it. With back spin, it'll move backwards, in the totally opposite direction.

After a two-year hiatus, 2K Games is back with its newest installment in the PGA Tour series, PGA Tour 2K23 . And just in time for those of us who play the game and have to bare with the winter months closing the courses. Instead, we can practice our sport comfortably and conveniently at home, on our couches. Exchanging our set of clubs for a single controller. But given that we're talking about golf here, the game doesn't necessarily get any simpler just because we have the assistance of a controller and the game's interface. That's why we're providing you with the five best beginner tips for PGA Tour 2K23 so that you can also conquer the course online.

5. Always Factor the Wind

When we're teeing off in real life, it's pretty easy to notice the slightest breeze. However, in PGA Tour 2K23 , it can be challenging to tell if there is wind at all, and if so, which direction it is blowing. In-game, the arrow in the top-middle of your screens, with the associated number, indicates that. The direction of the wind will be indicated by the direction in which the arrow points. The wind speed in MPH is indicated by the number. Almost every swing, with the exception of putting, requires you to take this into account.

You may even already know this if you've played the prior game. However, it's something we often overlook or even forget when we get the ants in our pants to pipe one down the fairway. Even for our layup and approach shots, we need to factor in the wind, that's if you're planning on landing on the green. 4. Changing Clubs

Speaking of things we often overlook and forget – changing clubs. If you're new to the game, you may not know that for every shot in the game, you can change your clubs using the up or down arrows on the Directional pad (D-pad). That means you can use your driver for putting, and vice versa. Now obviously, that's not what you want to do, but it does make for a fun fool-around match with friends. Regardless of the fact, one of the best beginner tips we can give you for PGA Tour 2K23 is to change your club to help your shots get a better lie.

This can especially be helpful when you hook one into the trees. Which we understand happens, more for some of us than others. Regardless, if this is the case, it might not be best to use the club your game will select (likely an Iron), which is almost certain to bank off a tree or branch. Instead, use your wood or driver to smash it through the wickets. With that, sometimes the game will choose your Wood or Hybrid off the tee box if the hole is too far away. However, if you bring out your driver, with the luck of the wind, you can drive the green.

3. When to Add Spin

It may not seem like it, but adding spin to your shot can drastically change where your ball ends up. You can add spin to your shot by holding down LB or L1, depending on your platform, and the ball icon on the right will appear with a white line down the middle. When you push up with your right analog stick, the ball will gain topspin and move forward when it lands. Then, pulling down on the right analog stick will give the ball backspin, stopping it where it lands or, with chipping, occasionally spinning it back a few feet.

Most of the time you add spin when chipping onto the green so that you can get your ball to roll or stop the ball right next to the hole. However, you may even want to add spin to your ball to help give your Driver, Woods, or Hybrid an extra few extra yards. This can especially be helpful with your approach shots when you're just a few yards short of the green on the edge of a bunker. That's why adding spin to your ball can be one of the best beginner tips to help you knock off a stroke or two in PGA Tour 2K23 .

2. How to Change Loft

As we said, not all of our shots land in the fairway or on the green. And sometimes, we find ourselves in a situation where we have tree branches and even rocks, blocking our line. In this case, you may want to change your loft so that you can hit your shot under or over the obstacle. To do this, hold LB or L1, and move the left analog stick up or down. Moving the left analog stick up will make the ball fly lower, and moving it down will raise its arch higher.

In the same fashion, moving the left joystick to the left or right will curve the ball's arch around the obstacle. You'll especially want to utilize this when you got a fair way that doglegs left or right. Using both this and the loft can get you out of most tough lies, which can save you a stroke or two. That's why changing the hook of your shot and its loft is one of the more crucial beginners tips in PGA Tour 2K23

1. Shot Type

The last of our beginner tips for PGA Tour 2K23 is changing your shot type. Along with changing your club, you can also change the type of shot you take by using the left or right arrows on the D-pad. This is best used for approach or short to mid chip shots. Sometimes you might want to use a splash, specifically if you're in the bunker. Or, a flop shot out of the rough, with some loft, to sit the ball next to the hole.

Your shot type options depend on the club you use. For example, your woods and irons will have different shot types, from the same location on the fairway. With that, your pitching wedge and sand wedge will also have different shots than your irons. That's why if you find yourself in a situation where you can't get the approach shot to line up with the hole, try switching up your shot type. Sometimes, you can even get creative with clubs for some unique shots that end up working out.

If you are a complete beginner to PGA Tour 2K23, you might feel overwhelmed with all the things you need to learn.

Golf is a very unforgiving sport because of how bad the consequences are when you make a mistake – even a small one.

In this post, we will give you the best tips and tricks for beginners in PGA Tour 2K23. We’ll help you climb the leaderboards and possibly even win the PGA Tour.

Measuring Putts

The biggest challenge in PGA Tour 2K23 is being good with putting. Putting well is usually the key to avoiding bogeys or getting eagles or birdies.

The best tip for measuring the putt distances and angles is to first look at the terrain. If there is a big downhill slope, the ball will roll sharply to the left or right more.

If the slope is uphill, it should be a lot easier to measure the angle of the putt.

Of course, if the green is flat, it should be the easiest putt you could ever ask for.

As for the distance and power, the game will automatically give you a good target. However, it is best to reduce your distance by 1 to 2 feet and focus on hitting the perfect power swing timing.

Learning how to putt means taking all of these in your head every time you are on the green.

Learning to Chip

Learning how to chip the ball is another crucial part of the game you need to work on. Once you learn how to chip or adjust the distance to make the ball go near the hole as close as possible, you will eventually reach scores around -6 or -10 consistently on the events.

The best tip for doing a good chip is by accounting for the bounce and roll of the ball afterward the swing.

If the hole is 13 yards away, aim for around 6 or 7 yards behind the hole. If the green is uneven, you don’t have to adjust your shot as much because the ball will barely roll toward the hole.

The ball will bounce a few times, and it will unlikely turn to the left or right if your timing is perfect.

Learning When to Add Spin

When you add spin to the ball , you are either trying to make the ball roll farther or make the ball stay once it lands on the grass.

So, when do you want to add backspin or topspin to the ball? The best way to go about it is by looking at the situation first.

Is the maximum swing distance near uneven terrain?

Are there bunkers or roughs within 2 to 3 yards near the green or the hole?

Do you even need to add spin? Because sometimes, you can just lower the power and let the ball roll closer to your target.

The best tip is to always look for big slopes or holes near the roughs. These situations usually require you to add a spin so you can consistently get close to the hole.

There are some cases where fades or draws are better, which will be another tip later on. Always remember that adding spin to the ball will make your swing timing a lot harder.

Always Remember You Can Change Clubs

The default or automated distance, clubs, and shot types used in a game are usually correct. These are made by your caddie in PGA Tour 2K23.

However, you can always switch to whatever club you feel will give you the better chance.

For example, if you hit a rough 200 yards away from the hole with some lie, you will most likely be using a 5-iron club. However, you can switch to a 3-hybrid to give you a little more yardage.

There will be some 3-par holes where your default club isn’t the best club to use for the situation.

Adjust to Your Timing Errors

As a beginner, getting your timings will take a while for you to get them right. As you play the game, you will get better and better.

However, there will be some slight inconsistencies along the way. Even a player with more than 100 hours on the game will still have slight mistakes in timing.

If you can pinpoint what your errors are, you can adjust slightly for them.

When I played the game, I noticed that I tend to have a slow or late downswing. It would either be perfect or a bit too slow. If your timing is a bit slow, the ball will fly more to the right.

Because of this, I slightly aim more to the left to compensate. Since I would get perfect swings, it means that some of the shots would go more to the left.

This tip is mostly applicable off the tee. Since your aim is to get the ball to the fairway, you only have to avoid the roughs, woods, and other obstacles.

Wind Direction

Playing with strong winds is my kryptonite. The game will change drastically, with winds ranging from 10mph to 15mph.

It would feel like you are already putting on insane slopes for your drives. It will take a while to get used to; with strong winds, you want to compensate hard on the direction of your aim.

You can play around the winds by changing where you want the ball to land. In 4-par or 5-par holes, you want to avoid the wind going directly against your shot since you want to reach the green as fast as you can.

Choosing the Right Shot Type

Most beginners only use the chip off the rough, splash out of the bunker, and a normal shot on the fairway. Always remember that you can change your shot type depending on what your goal is on the fairway.

Punch shots are used to try and lessen the effect of the wind. Chip shots are used to get out of the rough. Splash shots to get out of bunkers.

They can all be useful elsewhere if you know how to use them effectively.

Pay Attention to the Lie Angles

Lie angles can be seen on the top-right corner of your screen during a game. These angles are fairly obvious to see if the ball is on a slope.

The lie can affect your shot drastically. It will be much harder to add spin to the ball as well. The timing will be a bit different from a normal shot as well.

Learning Draws and Fades

Draws are done to make the ball curve from right to left, while fades are done to make the ball go from left to right. These are for a right-handed golfer. Reverse them if you are a left-handed golfer.

These shots are usually done to avoid the trees or other obstacles. You can also use them to make the roll from left to right or right to left upon landing.

Using them effectively will help you be in better situations on the fairway. However, the timing and swing path will get much harder as well.

Equip Fittings on Each Club

In PGA Tour 2K23, you can equip fittings to improve your player . Each fitting has a different rarity and stats that they increase.

Each club can have three different fittings. For every fitting equipped, it will cost coins. You will need to earn a lot of coins to get each club maxed out.

You can also make slightly different builds to improve on your weaknesses as a player.

Swapping Archetypes to Cover Your Weaknesses

Archetypes can be changed for free in PGA Tour 2K23. You can try out each of the archetypes and see what you like best.

If you want to improve in putting, you can go for the Greensman. If you have problems with the swing path and timings, you can go for Rhythm.

‘PGA Tour 2K23’ features Tiger Woods, lacks memorable courses

In the two years since the release of “PGA Tour 2K21,” the team at HB Studios has not been idle. In that time, the Canadian developers have crammed a host of new features into their golf video game series, spanning from new shot types to new modes. At the moment, publisher 2K’s golf franchise is the gold standard golf sim on the market. Heck, Tiger Woods being emblazoned on the game’s cover should serve as an emphatic statement that this series, and not the former EA franchise that bore his name, wears the crown.

The question, however, is whether the PGA Tour 2K series can differentiate itself enough to remain atop the golf sim leaderboard when EA rejuvenates its golf franchise, “EA Sports PGA Tour,” in the coming year. With “2K23,” which releases Oct. 11, HB Studios fires the first shot, and it’s a fine one. It’s a long, serviceable drive into the center of the fairway. If this was your shot, you’d be happy with it every time — but you’d also be hard-pressed to remember one over the other. And that is “2K23’s” biggest shortcoming: It is a very good game, and does a great job capturing golf’s feel. It just doesn’t feel very distinguished. Even as the only major golf sim on the market, the game feels serviceable but not essential.

This is perhaps highlighted best by the tournament series featured in “PGA Tour 2K23”: the FedEx Cup. Golf enthusiasts will bluntly tell you no one really cares about the FedEx Cup, certainly not in the way golfers care about the Masters Tournament or the Open Championship. Those are the sport’s true majors — and you can’t play either in “PGA Tour 2K23.”

There’s no Augusta. No Pebble Beach. No St. Andrews. The courses found in “2K23” at launch are all lovely, but TPC Boston is not particularly memorable compared to some of the sport’s most hallowed grounds. (Note: After publication, a press representative for 2K said Pebble Beach would be added as part of the game’s free post launch content.) And so, while the career mode allows players to fine-tune their golfer and their equipment in extremely satisfying and granular ways, it lacks the luster of the sport’s premier events.

The best video games of 2022 so far

“PGA Tour 2K23” does add some new courses to its TPC-centered offerings, but even these seem to highlight the high-profile absences. All I can think of when I look at one of the three added courses, the South Course in Wilmington, Del., is the line from the “Wayne’s World” movie: “Hi, I’m in Delaware.” There is little that quickens the pulse about the course — or its home state, unless you’re looking to incorporate a company.

Given licensing agreements, no one will be playing Augusta or the Old Course or compete in one of golf’s four majors until EA brings back its golf line in 2023. (Its last installment was in 2015). So it’s best not to dwell on what’s missing and focus on what is on offer with “PGA Tour 2K23” — specifically, a fantastic engine that perfectly captures the feel of a golf shot. That is the defining characteristic of HB Studio’s games. But will that provide enough satisfaction when 2K once again faces real competition in the golf sim market?

It is, for certain, enjoyable in the meantime. With “PGA Tour 2K23,” players can craft a shot for nearly any situation, adjusting the loft, spin or speed. Need to carve around that dogleg to the left? Use the analog stick to shape the perfect draw. Trying to avoid a low-hanging limb? Punch it under the branches instead, a new addition this year. If players want to tune their game even more, they can utilize a skill tree to over-index on certain attributes, like shot distance, to enhance their strengths or help mitigate their weaknesses. I’ve been focusing on my short game since putting remains brutally challenging in the 2K series.

There is an array of other new features as well, including a Top Golf mode where players can virtually participate in the popular gamified driving range. Here too though, the addition actually highlights what “2K23” is lacking.

For those familiar with Top Golf, where you score points by hitting balls at different targets, the mode in “2K23” plays pretty much exactly as you’d imagine, which is to say, it’s not exactly a highlight. I can easily play Top Golf at one of their venues in real life. I won’t be walking onto the front nine at Pebble Beach anytime soon. Lacking the ability to do so virtually in an otherwise good golf game — moreover, the only PGA game on the market for the moment — is disappointing. Top Golf is not a salve for that particular itch.

In ‘Madden 23,’ filler clutters an otherwise improved game

Golf games have not evolved much over the years, and while “2K23” is definitely better than its predecessor, it’s not exactly by leaps and bounds. As noted when we reviewed “PGA Tour 2K21,” the game is good but does not really distinguish itself in any particular way (perhaps with the exception of its challenge on the greens). There is “more” to find in this release, but there’s not much that will drop your jaw. You can play as celebrity athletes like Michael Jordan or Steph Curry now. Neat. (Honestly, if they’re throwing in basketball players, it would be better if they added Charles Barkley and the crime against humanity that is his golf swing.) On the PGA Tour, you can earn bonuses by building a rivalry with an existing pro. Okay, sure. (Somewhat interestingly — to those following the PGA Tour’s heated battle for players with the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf — you can play with and against Bubba Watson and Harold Varner III, who both jumped over to LIV Golf.)

While “PGA Tour 2K23” delivers on the feel of a golf shot, it underwhelms when it comes to providing a feel for a major tournament or even dramatic moments. The broadcast crew is flat and often delivers inaccurate commentary. One putt was applauded by one commentator as it went sailing some 25 feet past the hole. That’s not a commendable putt, that’s a disaster. The presentation of the 2K PGA series has always paled in comparison to EA’s old offerings. “2K23” does not close that gap, even with its new bells and whistles.

At its core, “PGA Tour 2K23” remains a good, solid golf game that has benefited greatly from a lack of competition. I’m not too bothered by not being able to play St. Andrews at the moment because I simply don’t have that option unless I want to dig out “Rory McIlroy PGA Tour” on PS4. But when EA returns to the field, will the most enjoyable parts of “2K23” still hold up? Or will the appeal of those courses I badly miss pull me back to EA?
