1. Whitewater Rafting & River Tubing (Cagayan de Oro river)

Location : Cagayan de Oro River

Whitewater river rafting is Cagayan de Oro’s most popular attraction. The city isn’t touted as “The Whitewater Rafting Capital of the Philippines” for nothing! This extreme adventure, highlighting the majestic Cagayan De Oro River, draws large crowds of tourists all-year-round. With 25 rapids to navigate for beginner and seasoned rafters alike, there is no shortage of fun alongside expert guides who steer the group safely.

But if getting splashed in rafts is not your thing, you may hop on a “donut” and experience river tubing instead. You traverse the same river and may even explore in groups, but you will be given a donut-shaped innertube to ride into instead of riding a raft. Depending on the river conditions, the experience may either be calm and relaxing or as crazy and exhilarating as rafting, minus the rapids.

Mambuaya Cave (formerly known as Monigue Crystal Cave ) is a cave found at Barangay Mambua, known for its unique passageways and interesting sights.

Zipline in Dahilayan Adventure Park

Don’t forget to include Dahilayan Adventure Park in your Bukidnon day tour itinerary! This park offers various challenging activities for friends and family.

Try out the Asia’s Longest Dual Zipline , a 840-meter zipline where you’ll pass through the breath-taking forested area of the park for almost a minute. If that’s easy enough for you, step up the game with the Dropzone where you’ll experience a 120-feet freefall ride into a man-made lake.

We tried the dual zipline and it was an exhilarating experience. The glide started out scary at first but just soon after I got to appreciate the view of the forest from above. One of my acquaintances tried the Dropzone and we screamed when she was dropped, but she said that it was super fun as well.

If you’ve dreamt of flying, now is the time to make that come true!

Cagayan de Oro is one of the handful locations in Mindanao where you can paraglide. You can experience paragliding in Hugo Sky Lounge in Sierra del Oro Resort, located in Barangay Indahag. The activity entails tandem paragliding with an instructor who assists and controls the drive. You’ll get to enjoy a bird eye’s view of Cagayan de Oro and Macalajar Bay.

Kweba de Oro (meaning “Cave of Gold”) is a river cave located in Barangay Lumbia, near Cagayan de Oro City. It is ideal for experienced cavers, as the route here is rather difficult. To get inside, you need to rappel about 130 feet below. You also need to cross passageways with water almost touching the ceiling, leaving only little space to breathe. To exit the cave, you need to do a short dive through a sump (underwater passage) until you emerge outside.

Few people venture to Kweba de Oro, but it is a rewarding experience and one of the most unique Cagayan de Oro tourist spots that you can visit.

Macahambus Adventure Park is a nature park geared towards the sporty and adventurous. Located at Barangay Lumbia, it is home to the Macahambus Cave and Gorge and offers various activities such as trekking thru an ancient forest filled with century-old trees, swinging from the top of a gorge, crossing an over 200-feet-high sky bridge that offers a grand view of the gorge and cave, rappelling, and ziplining.

This park in Cagayan de Oro is sure to give you experiences that you won’t soon forget!

Marang fruit

Cagayan de Oro enjoys a continuous arrival of fresh fruits from nearby farms. The prices here are cheaper compared to Manila. You can buy lansones , mangosteen , durian , and marang .

In my last trip to Cagayan de Oro, I finally get to taste marang! It was unexpectedly delicious and the smell isn’t as strong as a durian. Take note though that a lot of hotels and establishments don’t allow durian or marang inside their premises because the fruit smell tends to linger.

Making table in public market in CDO

Sikwate (tablea hot chocolate) and puto maya (sticky rice) is often eaten as breakfast or merienda. You can find it in Cogon Public Market , the largest local market in Cagayan de Oro. Cogon Public Market is a one-stop shop for locals. Aside from native delicacies, you can also find halal and non-halal meals here.

For other local eats, read our guide on Where to Eat in Cagayan de Oro .

Pastel

There are several favorite pasalubongs you can buy in Cagayan de Oro. Some of these include pastel , sinuglaw , jamon de cagayan , and roasted cashew nuts . You can buy these items in pasalubong centers or malls such as Limketkai Center.

You may also want to bring home fresh fruits from the local market. Just make sure to use a durable plastic or reusable bag instead of box so you won’t have to check the items in the airport.

The Higalaay Festival is one of the most awaited events in Cagayan de Oro. It’s held every August 28 in celebration of St. Augustine, the patron saint of the city.

Pinnacle at Mapawa Nature Park in Cagayan de Oro

Cagayan de Oro’s weather fares well throughout the year. While it isn’t wholly free of rainfall, it’s luckily been able to stay clear of typhoons. This makes it a great tourist spot regardless of what month of the year it may be for thrill-seekers on the hunt for adventure.

It’s worth noting, however, that there are some peak seasons you may want to be aware of if you’re after specific activities that are dependent on the weather like whitewater rafting.

You can also get a glimpse of CDO’s culture with its Higalaay Festival. It’s a fulfilling experience with food, tons of dancing, and bright colors. Keep reading to see what your CDO getaway could look like from the festival, holidays, and other occasions to visit.

Dry and Peak Season | September to March

Starting September, the weather cools down with winds coming northeast of the Philippines. The temperature typically ranges from 25°C to 30°C.

You won’t have to worry about getting caught in the rain or unexpected flight and ferry delays. This dry season is also the ideal time to do all your trekking adventures. You avoid both the blistering summer heat and the crowd that comes along with it.

Cagayan River Whitewater Rafting Season | July to December

For the adrenaline junkies looking to bank on some thrilling activities, whitewater rafting in Cagayan River is one way to go. On its calmer periods, the water is clear, giving life to its immediate surrounding flora and fauna.

During its swollen season in July to December, the river rages on as a challenge for whitewater rafters keen on getting an experience for the books.

Higalaay Festival | August

Also known as the “Friendship Festival,” the Higalaay Festival is Cagayan de Oro’s hallmark celebration. It’s held every 28th of August, coinciding with the feast day of St. Augustine, the patron saint of the city. Here they run the country’s longest culinary show, have a colorful parade of floats and icons, and end the evening with brilliant pyrotechnics.

Street-dancing competitions liven up the city too. You’ll fit right in if you’re raring to party amidst an energetic crowd and colorful costumes.

The festive spirits usually begin as early as the first week of August, so this month could be a particularly interesting time to drop by the region.

Climate and Weather

In general, you can expect CDO to have the same humid weather felt across the Philippines. There isn’t much fluctuation in temperature either. Its coldest period from December to February can range from 24°C to 31°C, while its hottest average in April is 33°C.

Since Cagayan de Oro is most known for its outdoor activities, it’s worth taking into consideration the amount of rainfall you should be anticipating for your trip.

While there is rain that occurs throughout the year, peak wet season is June to October. By November downpour gradually starts to lessen up until the Philippine summer of March to May.

What to Wear

Regardless of where you’re going in the area, may it be trekking in the mountains or celebrating the Kadayawan festival in the city, there’s going to be a big chance that it will be humid. The best option is to go with cool, lightweight clothes.

If you’re going to adventure parks, a good choice would be to wear garments with dri-fit material to keep your skin cool and dry, especially during intense activities.

For good measure, bring activewear and beach essentials for a spontaneous trip to an Eco Park or beach nearby.

There are a few ways to reach CDO depending on your budget and preferences. If you’re planning to visit for a couple of days, the best choice is to go there via plane. Other methods such as sea or land take up more time, but could also be an interesting experience.

Philippine Airlines Boeing 777

You can easily book plane tickets to Cagayan de Oro via Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, or Philippine Airlines. The former two offer direct flights every day, while PAL flies thrice a week .

From Manila

From the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, you can reach the Laguindingan Airport after approximately 90 minutes of travel. For a convenient trip to your hotel, you may book a Cagayan de Oro airport transfer .

From Clark, Cebu, Davao, or Iloilo

Major Philippine Airlines also service direct flights to Cagayan de Oro from other main parts of the country, such as Clark, Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo.

If you’re not a fan of flying by air or you’re nearer to a port, you can travel to CDO via sea. Depending where you’re coming from, it could take more than a day to get to Cagayan de Oro.

2Go Travel sails two to three times a week from Manila going to Cagayan de Oro. Because of the distance, it can take 35 hours or more to reach your destination.

Trans-Asia Shipping Lines sails daily from Cebu going to Cagayan de Oro. Coming from Cebu will cut your trip time much shorter, which would take less than 10 hours.

Yes, it’s possible to reach CDO by land! Just like traveling by sea, expect it to take a while, especially if you’re coming from Luzon. This option is best explored if you’re coming from the Mindanao area already.

The Philtranco bus offers daily rides from their Pasay terminal to Cagayan de Oro. It takes around 30 hours to get to CDO from Manila.

You can take the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal bus and reach Cagayan de Oro in under eight hours. They have multiple trips every day that you can choose from. You may also rent a car in Davao and drive yourself to Cagayan de Oro. Coming from Butuan, Surigao, and North Cotabato is also possible via land.

Traveling to the different points of interest in CDO will give you a similar experience as most major cities in the Philippines.

If it’s your first time in the country, you won’t be missing out—jeepneys, taxis, and buses are abound in the area. As a bonus, you’ll get to experience a unique mode of transport here called the motorela. Learn more about it below!

Philippine jeepney

The jeepneys in CDO are pretty much the same anywhere else in the Philippines, but if you’re a foreigner who hasn’t tried it yet, then it’ll surely be an experience! This is by far the cheapest mode of transportation and will get you to most major landmarks in the city.

A motorela is almost like a cross between a tricycle and a jeepney. It’s a motorcycle with a passenger compartment at the rear. This mode of transport is unique to CDO as it was invented here. It’s safe to say you should miss out riding one when you see them on the streets!

There are motorcycles for rent around Cagayan de Oro if you want to enjoy the city at your own pace. This is an excellent choice if you’re a solo or pair traveler with a limited amount of time to go around.

Taxis are a common choice for roundtrip airport transfers as they’re air-conditioned and can carry your luggage. The ride-hailing app Grab is also available in Cagayan de Oro for your convenience.

The buses in CDO don’t typically go around the area but rather escort you on tours or travel to other parts of Mindanao. Always read the signages before hopping on so you know where you’re headed!

Local Cuisine

The Kagay-anon palate mixes the taste of sweet and spicy with zestiness you know you’ll look for long after you’ve had it. CDO delicacies range from sweet and comforting to exciting and exotic.

One such example of their unique food is Binaki (Sweet Tamales), made from ground native corn, milk, baking powder, sugar, eggs, and salt. It’s wrapped in corn husks that are folded into the shape of a frog. Kagay-anons refer to a frog as “baki,” which is where the food gets its name.

Another dish exclusive to CDO is Remember Me, often called Soup No. 5 or RM. This particular dish is one that tourists tend to try because it’s supposedly an aphrodisiac. The soup contains bovine innards, tendons, and bull’s testicles.

Apart from dishes, you’ll want to watch out for fresh fruits from CDO’s Kadayawan festival such as durian and bananas. You’ll also be able to find ostrich and crocodile meat at select groceries and restaurants.

Recommended Best Restaurants and Bars

Kagay-Anon Restaurant

A well-known restaurant in CDO, Kagay-Anon Restaurant serves its home-cooked food on your regular serving platters. What makes it just a little more special is that all the food is tucked neatly into a bed of banana leaves, contributing to its Filipino ambiance.

Its taste is uniquely Kagay-anon. Among their variety of dishes made of beef and seafood, you’ll find some more exotic types of meat on the menu as well such as crocodile and ostrich.

Cagayan de Oro Tourist Spots: Where to Go When in Cagayan de Oro?

13 apr cagayan de oro tourist spots: where to go when in cagayan de oro.

Most of us love traveling. Who would not agree with that? It is our way of discovering the other places’ history, culture and the local people’s way of living. Of course, we do travel to have fun and spend some quality time either with friends or family, even for self-contemplation.

Whenever we get to discover new places that we haven’t gone to before, especially seeing popular landmarks and natural sceneries, they give us that feeling of satisfaction. Researches said that people who spend their money with traveling are more satisfied in life than those people who spend their money for material things. Maybe that is why more people are into traveling now that social media work as an open portfolio containing all the beautiful places in this world being posted by fellow friends and even strangers.

There are also some people who frequently travel. Maybe because it’s part of their job or mainly, their job. The latter are those that you call travel bloggers who blogs about their adventures they’ve had from a specific city or country anywhere in this world. This job may sound easy, but according to those who are professed travel bloggers, it works just like other jobs. The difference is that you must at least blend in with the new environment, learn their culture and live like the local people living there. Exciting isn’t it? Travelers, may they be local or foreign, usually travel to places they might have heard about from fellow travelers or which are yet to be discovered. But typically, travelers research the place they are planning to go to, which means those are places which have already been traveled by others. Only few dare to travel to those that are yet to be known.

Cagayan de Oro, the capital city of the province of Misamis Oriental, Philippines, has been tagged as the adventure capital in Mindanao due to its adventure and leisure venues that tourists can avail when in the city. Also called The City of Golden Friendship, the city is proud of being included to the latest list of Top 10 Next Wave Cities in the country. So, whenever you are planning to visit the city, don’t miss to visit these Top 13 Cagayan de Oro Tourist Spots and live the life of being one of the Kagay-anons.

List of Cagayan de Oro Tourist Spots

St. Augustine Cathedral

Cagayan de Oro’s St. Augustine Cathedral hails at the heart of the city, situated near the Cagayan de Oro River beside Gaston Park. It is the most known worship venue in the city with its gothic style architecture and that is adorned with stained glass given by the New York Sacred Heart chapel.

The cathedral was built in 1624 by Fray Agustin San Pedro who was called El Padre Capitan that time by the residents. Later in 1778, it was burned down together with the convent. With the help of Fray Pedro de Santa Barbara and with some generous Cagayanons, the cathedral’s ruins were built anew in 1780. But didn’t last long until 1831. Ten years later, in 1841, the church was rebuilt but this time, using concrete materials. Beautiful paintings of the four evangelists were adorned to the church, even had a pipe organ. Notice the wooden cross which stands up until today in front of the cathedral? It was erected in 1888. Until in 1946, the Cathedral and the Convent was rebuilt by Archbishop James Hayes, SJ.

In order to get there,  after arriving in Laguindingan Airport, you can ride a shuttle van going to the city proper. Usually, you need to pay P150-P200 for the ride. There are shuttle van booths around the airport, you just have to look for those that can drop you near Carmen (ride a jeepney and ask the driver or the barker to drop you at the cathedral, with a fare of P7) , better if they can drop you at the Cathedral. When from Westbound Terminal, you can ride a jeepney which shows Patag, Carmen, Cogon on its headboard and ask him to drop you at the Cathedral, a fare of P10 will do.

Gaston Park

A favorite venue after Sunday masses held at St. Augustine Cathedral is Cagayan de Oro’s Gaston Park. It does now have musical fountain with lights installed just last year’s December entertaining frequent visitors and passers-by. Gaston Park was once the main plaza of Cagayan de Misamis during the Spanish colonial period which served as a training ground for local patriots in the course of  the Philippine-American War. Later, it became the site of the Battle of Cagayan de Misamis which occurred in April 7, 1900. And in 2000, a National Historical Institute marker was placed in the park.

Know that Gaston Park is the park just beside the St. Augustine Cathedral. After paying a visit to the cathedral, spend some time at the park for fresh air and get entertained with the musical fountain during the night.

Vicente de Lara Park

Formerly known as MacArthur Park honoring General Douglas MacArthur who landed in Cagayan de Oro after escaping from Corregidor enroute to Australia, this one of the many parks around the city is now called Vicente de Lara Park. This redeveloped park was named after a provincial governor, Vicente de Lara. Currently, it houses a Press Freedom Monument and the Heritage Monument of Misamis Oriental that were designed by national artist Eduardo Castrillo.

It is located in front of the Provincial Capitol of Misamis Oriental building surrounded with huge mahogany trees that shade the whole place. Since before, it has became a favorite place among people who do morning jogs or even evening strolls. Also, it’s a venue for dating couples.  Mostly, it’s a place for groups who practice dance choreographies, chess matches and zumba activities.

Most of the events in the city are being held here. And when the sun is about to set, the whole park is being lit up with various colors by the pendant lamps hanging on the trees.

You can bring yourself to Vicente de Lara Park by riding a shuttle from the Laguindingan Airport which then drops you at the Centrio Ayala Mall. If you arrived CDO by bus, you can ride a jeepney with the route going to Centrio Mall. Since the mall is just near the park, take a short walk where you can pass by the Northern Mindanao Medical Center and the Provincial Capitol of Misamis Oriental.

Plaza Divisoria (Golden Friendship Park)

The very place which Cagayan de Oro was known for and where most Kagay-anons flock during Fridays and Saturdays for Night Cafe is the Plaza Divisoria, but that was before. Now, this place follows rules pertaining to crossing the roads via pedestrian lanes, well, strictly or else you’ll get sanctioned by paying a specific fine and the Night Cafe doesn’t exist anymore. But still, it is a place of commerce and does what a usual park can offer.

Plaza Divisoria, sometimes called the Golden Friendship Park, was built in the early 1900’s as a town divider (Divisoria) or fire breaker. This was realized when a great fire occurred that almost burned down the entire town. Now, it is comprised of several parks dedicated to local and national heroes such as Andres Bonifacio, Dr. Jose Rizal, President Ramon Magsaysay and former Cagayan de Oro Mayor Borja. One of the parks in this Plaza Divisoria is the Bonifacio Park where most of the local soldiers who died during the 1900’s Philippine-American War were buried beneath the monument.

There can also be found a huge LED screen in the Divisoria where visitors and passers-by can watch news, movies and telenovelas. At the Divisoria Kiosk, the heart of the Plaza Divisoria, is where most of the events happen like last year’s Carnival Parade, and among others.

When from the Laguindingan Airport, there are shuttle vans that can drop you at the Divisoria so you can ride those. When from West Bound Terminal, you can just ask any jeepney drivers or barkers  if they can drop you in Divisoria.

City Museum of Cagayan de Oro

Used as a water tank tower before, now used as a home of the city’s historical treasures. This City Museum of Cagayan de Oro can be located at the left of the St. Augustine Cathedral and at the back of the Gaston Park.

Built in 1921, it was the town’s water source when the tower was still tapping water from Malasag. It even endured the bombings during the past wars and until now, it is still standing proudly. And in 2008 under Mayor Constantino Jaraula, the city government received funding to renovate the said tower converting it from an old water tower into what is now, the City Museum.

The museum is consisted of three floors, all containing old photographs of events and famous Cagayanons with historical significance to the city. There are also artifacts, antiques, old paintings around, and an interesting old Ostrich egg which is believed to be centuries old. You can take pictures on the ground floor except on the second and third floors. The City Museum of Cagayan de Oro is open from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM during weekdays, and closed during weekends and holidays with an entrance fee of P20 per person.

Planning to visit the museum? You can just bring yourself to St. Augustine Cathedral or Gaston Park. And whenever you see a tall cylindrical tower, that should be the City Museum of Cagayan de Oro.

Museum of Three Cultures

To visit this museum, you can drop yourself to Centrio Ayala Mall when riding a shuttle van coming from Laguindingan airport. Then you can look for a motorela (same as Tuk Tuk of Thailand) and ask the driver to bring you to Capitol University located at Corner Osmena Street and Corrales Avenue fronting Lifestyle District.

White Water Rafting

One of the things that Cagayan de Oro is known for is its challenging water rafting adventure which made the city tagged as the  white water rafting capital of the Philippines . Like when dropping by the city, one should try white water rafting.

Many foreign and local tourists have already flocked to Cagayan de Oro to try taming the Cagayan de Oro river through water rafting. With the river’s challenging rapids that quickly follow one after another, just enough to bring an adrenaline rush to rafters. Especially for the first timers, the experience would be unforgettable. Must say the first scare was worth it. And the wild river lets you discover your inner strength and endurance.

There are water rafting agencies in the city that offers safe and secured rafting adventure. You just have to look for them online or by referrals from fellow tourists who have already tried rafting. Booking is a need so make sure you have already made contact with the agency regarding the specific date of your adventure.

Mapawa Nature Park

Facebook: Mapawa Park page

For those who prefer nature, Cagayan de Oro is also blessed with a beautiful forest reserve namely the Mapawa Nature Park, just a few kilometers away from the city proper.

The said park is 2,500 hectare land located within the mountains of Malasag which was used as a private ranch by the Pelaez family before. And now, it was converted into a park open for the public but still, the family focuses for the preservation of its amazing scenic views, breathtaking waterfalls and abundant flora and animal wildlife.

Fun activities and attractions await for visitors of Mapawa Nature Park such as the alluring waterfalls, horse-back riding, zip-line courses, cliff jumping, canyoneering, water slide, and forest and river trekking. It is advised by the management to wear hiking shoes, loose, long pants or jogging pants and clothing that are easy to move in for those who want to enjoy the mentioned outdoor activities. There’s also the Mapawa camping grounds where visitors can spend the night, with a minimum of 12 persons.

Image Source | e-Philippines Adventure Travel and Destinations page

In order to get an access to the park, an entrance fee must be paid. But rates usually vary on what kind of activity you want to try in the park, and availing packages would be a wise option for bigger groups which is already inclusive of room accommodation, meals for the entire day, activity and entrance fees. During weekdays, Tuesdays to Fridays, the park is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and on weekends, Saturdays to Sundays, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

If you’re already in the city, you can rent a van that can take you to Mapawa Nature Park in Barangay Cugman directly. But it would be best if you can contact the management of the park ahead of the date of your trip to inquire if the park is suitable for doing such activities or if they can accommodate more visitors on that date.

Macahambus Adventure Park

Just a few kilometers uptown in Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro is the Macahambus Adventure Park where you can experience crossing a 150-feet high hanging bridge, 120-meter long zipline and more than a hundred feet rappelling.

What they call as the Sky Bridge is a 135m-long hanging bridge suspended 150 feet from the ground. It lets you see the beautiful greens around. There’s also a zipline course which is 120 meters long. It is also called the Bouncing Zipline because the facilitators shakes the cable making the zipline course to bounce. Then there’s rappelling. It lets you rappel down from a height of more than a hundred feet.

Macahambus Gorge

Image Source | Facebook: Chahna Jaira Ferido

Along the Macahambus Adventure Park is the Macahambus Gorge that is easily accessible by going down a steel stairs of over a hundred steps. It was believed that a big cave existed 200 years ago which collapsed then created what is now this gorge. Just last 2010, this Macahambus Gorge became a heritage site by the city government of Cagayan de Oro.

Macahambus Cave

One of the historical sites tourists frequently visit in Cagayan de Oro is the Macahambus Cave that is located in Barangay Bayanga. It is also called a thru cave since there’s another opening at the end of the cave.

The cave is consisted of 3 chambers. The first chamber can only be entered by kids because the route is very narrow. Connected to it is the second chamber where a big boulder can be seen at the dead end, formed like a bed. It was believed to be the specific spot where Cruz Taal’s family stayed and rested after the “Battle of Macahambus”. The third chamber has an exit from the cave where the Cagayan River can be seen. The ideal time to visit the cave is during 10:00 AM, then is usually off limits by late afternoon for visitors.

If you wish to experience adventure and at the same time see the historical venues in the city, Macahambus Adventure Park and paying visit to Macahambus Cave and Gorge would be worthwhile. You can rent a van that could take you directly to Barangay Bayanga. There are also souvenir shops near the vicinity so make sure you get something to be reminded of your experience.

Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village

A place where tribal houses are being displayed amidst nature trails is the Gardens of malasag Eco-Tourism Village which is owned and managed by the city government of Cagayan de Oro. It features a vast land abundant of diverse wildlife that are endemic to the mountains of Malasag, has botanical gardens and other recreational accommodations and amenities. The village also shares Mapawa Nature Park’s natural forest reserve.

The said venue was established to promote awareness, teaching about the lives and rich culture of the ethnic groups settled in Northern Mindanao. For visitors who would like to visit the village, there’s an entrance fee. For every guest, a map of the entire village will be given making it easier to wander around. There’s also the village’s Alfresco Restaurant where you can enjoy a wide selection of tasty Filipino cuisines. Cold breeze, soothing and calm ambiance and amazing view of the bay and the Malasag hills are just some of the things you will get to enjoy at the Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village.

You can ride a jeepney heading to Cugman and get off at Malasag. Take a motorcycle ride up the hill to the village. Other option is riding a taxi which will cost you around P150 one way. Or more conveniently, you can rent a van from the city proper which can bring you directly to the village.

Catanico Falls

Located in Barangay F.S. Catanico is a small narrow falls which is surrounded by magma stone boulders, called the Catanico Falls. Before, the area is a bit isolated with no electricity, potable water and public transportation. Now, the city government has developed the area near the falls with rentable picnic huts, basic toilet facility and viewing area on top of a huge boulder. After all the developments, the natural environment still remained. However, the place could not accommodate more than 50 persons and the parking is only limited for around 6 vehicles. Though, cooking using charcoal is allowed.

To get to Catanico Falls, you will need to travel for 2 stops when you aren’t renting a van (which could take you to the vicinity directly). Take a taxi going to Cugman then head straight to the the F.S. Catanico Road, and get off to the Habal-habal terminal. Ride a habal-habal that can only bring you, another person plus a baggage. You can also ask the habal-habal driver to come and pick you up again given a designated time.

Migtugsok Falls

Image Source | Facebook: Butch Buhay

In the Sitio of Migtugsok in Cugman, Cagayan de Oro hails a falls with five beautiful cascading waters, the Migtugsok Falls. It could be reached via Barangay Indahag accessible by car until Sitio Camacawan where one has to walk for 45 minutes in a winding and descending sloping route with an estimated distance of 400 feet passing along the converging shallow river of Bigaan and Migtugsok that is more or less 20 meters in width. Another 30 minutes trek will be necessary until reaching the falls via the river.

Monigue Cave

Image Source | Facebook: Emerald Suites CDO page

Situated in Barangay Mambuaya is the Monigue Cave where sparkling formations of Calcium Carbonates (CaCo3) or Calcites can be found inside. At the cave entrance is a flowing water coming from an underground stream, which is only a small opening that is too narrow to get through. It requires a claustrophobia-inducing journey with a six inches airspace between the ceiling of the cave and the water that you need to submerge one by one being equipped with a helmet and a waterproof cap lamp. But at the end, you’ll be rewarded with the best of sights.

Found inside are formations of white and brown stalactites and stalagmites showing signs of oxidized materials which take 50 to 60 years to form an inch. There are also formations of flowstone,  transparent crystals, terraces and speleothems such as cathedral icons and drapes.

Just an advice, it would be best to join a tour group when decided to explore Monigue Cave. You can contact hotels and whitewater rafting outfitters around the city or get in touch with the City Tourism Office. This is for the reason that traveling from the highway to the exact cave site is quite rough. You can also register as a guest at the Mambuaya Barangay Hall to get assisted.

It will always be a pleasure to learn and become a witness of a city’s culture, lifestyle, nature and adventure. They bring that very unique feeling only traveling and exploring can give. Just like Cagayan de Oro, what it has become today is because of its rich history, environment and people. And of course, to the city government who do their best in bringing the city to its full bloom. Visit Cagayan de Oro and be lucky enough to get what the city can offer unlike any other city.

If you can’t find accommodations near the center within your budget, look for one near a mall or bus station. This makes it easy to access and leave from when you decide to go out.

CAGAYAN DE ORO TOURIST SPOT + TRAVEL GUIDE, HOTELS

Cagayan de Oro Travel Guide is an update post that covers a lits of Cagayan de Oro Hotels with links to a booking site and  Tourist Attractions.

CAGAYAN DE ORO AND ITS TOURIST SPOTS

It’s more fun in the Philippines. With the tourism of the Philippines slowly on the rise, the Department of Tourism started a campaign that would promote each and every corner of the country with their own unique pride and features to boast. Globetrotters from around the world would fly to the Philippines and stay on the usually highlighted destinations. Only to find out that there are more hidden gems and underrated sites hailing on this Pearl of the Orient Seas, one of which is a city lying on the large island of Mindanao.

Cagayan de Oro (CDO), the capital city of Misamis Oriental , is recognized as the gateway to Northern Mindanao. This city is also well known for its majestic and eye-nurturing places that showcase the beauty of nature surrounding it. People in the neighboring provinces or even those coming from the northern islands are willing to travel kilometers only to witness the enthralling attractions of the City of Golden Friendship and have time for rejuvenating their minds and a short escape from the hustling reality.

Gaston Park ( Cagayan de Oro Travel Guide | Hotels | Cagayan de Oro Tourist Spots )

In my family, I have been the lucky one to have been bitten by the wanderlust bug. I have always been the one who wants to explore other places, experience the different cultures and the camaraderie of the people from all over the country. I always see myself getting my travel bag ready for something that I consider as an adventure. Whether I go to the north or go down south, whether I take the bus, or board a plane or get conveyed by a ship, I really do not mind. What I do understand is that I am always ready for new sights and sounds, new culinary treasures and more and more memories to share.

One such adventure came upon when I attended one conference on CDO and had the opportunity to explore the place after the event. In my opinion, this is one of the best places I have ever been – as CDO is one of the highly urbanized cities in Misamis Oriental. While it may have been categorized as a highly urbanized city, it still boasted of a lush environment that shows how much they care for their natural resources.

 Beautiful Landscape

Cagayan de Oro is part of Metropolitan Cagayan de Oro which includes the picturesque towns of El Salvador, Opol, Alubijid, Gitagum, Laguindingan, Villanueva, Tagoloan, Claveria, and Jasaan. And when I took the grand tour, well, I got amazed by the lush sceneries and the places which need to be explored. The sitios and the barangays called out to me – and I really had a hard time bringing my feet in step because I really wanted to experience the totality of each place.

However, my friend insisted that he would bring me sightseeing after we did one thing he had been raring to do but had no companion to do so until he dragged me. And so, being the compliant and awestruck tourist that I was, I quietly followed suit, not knowing I would be engaged in one of the most exciting adventures of my life.

white water rafting in CDO

For a reasonable fee, I got the thrill of my life as the raft, along with me and few other brave souls, took the 14 rapids head-on. It took us about three hours to get from point A to point B but the in-betweens were truly magnificent – hearing myself scream my lungs out at every sharp turn, getting doused with the chilly water from time to time and seeing the majesty of God’s creations was truly worth it.

And since the two hours plus the jeepney ride took most of its toll on my constitution, well, what better way to cap it off than by having a foodie smorgasbord of delightful food from the street and the various establishments that dot the city? Needless to say, I stuffed myself full of heavenly pastel, which truly captured the essence of sweetness in my mouth, and had some crunchy chicharron and some other street food to chase it down my stomach. I did get myself sated and went walking to burn it off and get my eyes filled with the wonders of the city and its immediate outskirts.

My stomach full, my eyes filled with wonder, my heart aflutter with the pretty sights of the city, I enjoyed my stay in the city of the golden friendship. I cherished the memories that I got during the stay and the experience brought home the majesty of the country.

WHAT TO DO IN CAGAYAN DE ORO | TOURIST SPOTS

To further provide you with the list of the activities and to maximize your stay at the place, here is the list of activities you can do when visiting the city:

Swimming | Cagayan de Oro Beaches

CDO has four famous beaches namely Rohan, Centinela, Bonbon, and Opol beach. Gifted with an amazing view and marine resources, one would surely enjoy visiting these beaches and creating once in a lifetime memories. But out of the four, it is the Opol beach that is most famous. This is due to the pristine and a combination of cool and warm water found in the place, tourists, especially those who love snorkeling, find it extremely relaxing and at the same time satisfying.

Whitewater rafting

Are you ready to have an unforgettable summer experience? One that will bring out the best and the bravest version of you? Then try the whitewater rafting activity! For those of you who still do not know, CDO is the Whitewater Rafting Capital of the Philippines – and I got to experience it in all of its glory. And boy,  I enjoy every minute of the trip. At first, I felt a bit nervous because it’s my very first time to try the activity. But my hesitation got squashed when I saw how professional the guides spoke and seeing the safety gear prepped, I took my first step to a thrill-a-minute ride.

Considered as one of the leading attractions of the place, the total of three-hour adventure in the long yet shallow river will surely be a memorable one for you.

Canoeing and Tubing

This activity is suited for those who are bringing their little ones (children) with them since it is much safer. The boat journey with a tour guide will bring all the passengers to the calm and a little bit warm part of the river. This is an opportunity for the family members to simply enjoy the beauty and calmness of the water.

So what are the top tourist spots to visit? Let me give you the list:

Mapawa Park

Mapawa Nature Park, a tourist spot which is a family-owned ranch before by the Pelaez family. Its alluring waterfalls, equestrian activities, height challenging courses, and water activities such as river trekking are now open to the public. This forest reserve covers 2, 500 hectares and lies within the mountains of Malasag.

Malasag Garden

Looking for a day out adventure for the entire family? This is the perfect place for you and for the kids. The place covers a zoo with a variety of animals starting from reptiles, mammals, to marine animals. You may also choose to take a walk or rent a bicycle and explore the natural beauty of the place. If planning for an overnight getaway, you may also choose to rent a cabin and spend the night in an extraordinary way. Pools are also available for those who wish to join the summer heat vacations.

 St. Augustine Cathedral

Nestling at the center of the city near the Cagayan de Oro River, this cathedral was built by Fray Agustin San Pedro (El Padre Capitan) in 1624. This worship venue houses an intricate depiction of the four evangelists, together with a pipe organ. It is a gothic-styled architecture with stained glasses given by New York Sacred Heart Chapel. The St. Augustine Cathedral has gone many reconstructing paces through the years of existing.

Vicente de Lara

Formerly known as MacArthur Park, a park constructed in the city was named after Douglas Macarthur. To honor a General who served the Philippines and the United States of America during the Second World War, it was renamed into Vicente de Lara. One can stroll on the day or stand under trees with hanging pendant lamps on the night. Aside from this, it plays an important role in housing the Press Freedom Monument and Heritage Monument of Misamis Oriental designed by national artist Eduardo Castrillo.

Museum of Three Cultures in Capitol University

In this museum, you can sight galleries, artifacts, arts and crafts, and many other items, both religious and non-religious, that display what kind of living in CDO has existed in the past.

City Museum

Constructed in 1921 and is popular for having a hundred-year-old Ostrich egg. It contains old photographs of the festivities and famous Cagayanons that were remarkable to the city’s rich history during the olden times, not only in the locality but also within the whole Philippines.

Catanico Falls

The falls have a  magma stone boulder surrounded narrow falls perfect for those who would like to experience the natural beauty of nature.

Migtugsok falls

This attraction boasts five amusing cascading glasses of water, this place is being traveled by a lot of tourists due to its magnificent picture-perfect beauty.

Monigue Cave

It houses the sparkling formations of Calcium Carbonate or Calcites and is commonly visited by research enthusiasts as well as nature lovers.

Macahumbus Adventure Park

One of the famous outdoor adventures in the area is this park. There are a variety of activities available in the place such as a walk-in a bridge skyline and the zip line. This is far more unique than other activities because it offers the tourists an amazing view from the top of the century-old trees.

Hugo Sky Lounge

Can’t get enough of scenic views from your zipline adventure? Then I highly recommend that you try to visit the Hugo Sky Lounge. What makes it extra-special is it offers the tourists a panoramic view of the whole town. Better to bring your special someone here and watch the sunset or opt for a stargazing night.

Sinulom Falls

A must visit Tourist Spot in Cagayan de Oro (CDO), the road is currently being developed and would make the trip to the place easy.

Thank you so much for sharing and promoting our city!

Hi Moms Ruby, Its a pleasure…hope to come back for more updates.

The city is now boomed with different hotels depending on what trip a visitor wants(business trips, rafting, shopping, etc.). This is perhaps because of the wider tourism campaign of Cagayan de Oro City. This actually benefits the locals in creating more jobs in hotels.

HOW TO GET TO CAGAYAN DE ORO

Cagayan de Oro is located in  Northern Mindanao . There are many ways to go here, but be sure to do your own research on how to go to Cagayan de Oro and navigate your way all around the city. No worries, though, because we will give suggestions on the best ways on how to get to Cagayan de Oro City.

GETTING TO CAGAYAN DE ORO BY PLANE

The easiest way to get to Cagayan de Oro is definitely  by plane . You can purchase cheaper flights online if you decide to book usually 2-3 months before your planned date of visit, go ahead and  check out Cebu Pacific .

Also, the weather here can be a bit unpredictable. It could be boiling hot during the summer, or too rainy around December to January. So it’s better if you mentally prepare yourself ahead of time, unless those are the type of climates you’re used to, then, welcome!

GETTING TO CAGAYAN DE ORO BY BUS

There are buses and regular trips going to Cagayan de Oro from  Iligan City, Butuan, Balingoan, and  Davao City .  We took a night bus coming from Davao and it took us 8-9 hours to get to Cagayan de Oro.

GETTING TO CAGAYAN DE ORO BY SHIP/BOAT

There are regular trips to and from Manila,  Cebu ,  Tagbilaran ,  Bacolod ,  Iloilo . The schedule and the trips can be modified and cancelled because of weather conditions, especially during rainy season.

Click here to book your boat ticket from Cebu to Cagayan de Oro !

TRANSPORTATION AROUND CAGAYAN DE ORO

Like any metropolitan in the Philippines, Cagayan de Oro can be explored by riding  jeepneys, buses and taxis . Another convenient way of going around Cagayan de Oro is the  multicab , a small truck that takes passengers from specific routes much like a jeepney. You can also find vehicles similar to Thailand’s  tuk-tuk   called  motorella  in Cagayan de Oro.

When riding a taxi, make sure to find a driver that will let you pay by the meter. Don’t try to negotiate or agree with a price the driver dictates to avoid getting ripped off. Jeepneys are much cheaper but may be a bit challenging for some foreigners. However, Cagayan de Oro is dubbed as  “The City of Golden Friendship”  so talking to locals and asking about transportation routes won’t be a problem.

DAILY BUDGET FOR CAGAYAN DE ORO

Visitors from Western countries that are used to dealing in euros and dollars will be delighted to find that Cagayan de Oro and the Philippine peso cost less than what they’re used to spending. There are many cheap options for food, lodging and transportation if you’re wise enough to do as the locals do.

For example, jeepneys have a flat rate of  9 PHP  while taxis start their meters at  40 PHP . Also,  meals  at good but inexpensive local restaurants cost around  100-120 PHP  while mid-budget places go for around  500-800 PHP  for a dinner for two. That’s just around  $9-15 USD  for a couple of three-course meals!

There are rooms in transient homes, pension houses and B&Bs that only cost around  400-800 PHP . If you want to try a mid-range hotel in Cagayan de Oro, you can find a room for around  900-1500 PHP . Luxury rooms in Cagayan de Oro are available for  1,700-3,700 PHP , which is only  $32-70 USD . Not bad, right?

CLICK HERE TO RESERVE YOUR ACCOMMODATION WITH BOOKING AND AGODA.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get straight in to our main topic:  Cagayan de Oro itinerary .

The most popular ones in the area: Mapawa Natural Park, Catanico Falls and Mintugsok Falls. You will be busy the whole day enjoying and reaching them.

MAPAWA NATURE PARK

One of the most beautiful and breathtaking tourist spots in Cagayan de Oro is the Mapawa Nature Park. HOW TO GET TO CANTICO FALLS AND ENTRANCE FEE

It’s only 20 minutes away from Cagayan de Oro and the entrance fee is  20 PHP per person .

MINTUGSOK FALLS

This is yet another amazing waterfalls for the outdoor enthusiasts! Mintugsok Falls is just between the central point of Indahag and Malasag Mountains which could be accessed in two ways: trail hiking from Indahag and river trekking from Mapawa Nature Park.

DAY 2 ITINERARY IN CAGAYAN DE ORO

For your day 2 in your Cagayan de Oro itinerary we can recommend you to spend the day in a resort and waterparks. The most popular ones are Seven Seas Waterpark and Dahilayan Adventure Park.

If you prefer the comfort of resorts: Mountain Resort, High Ride and Hugo Sky Lounge. It will be a great way to spend your day. Especially if you stay with your friends and family.

SEVEN SEAS WATERPARK

This is a newly built recreational area and the first ever world class waterpark established in the country, so this is one of the Cagayan de Oro tourist spots to see. It has grown quite a name for itself and has been visited by many tourists and locals because of the many thrilling rides and slides such as the Cyclone and Abyss Tornado Ride.

The Seven Seas Waterpark can be found at Barra, Opol, so go ahead and visit this place where no one is too young or too old to have fun!

HOW TO GET TO SEVEN SEAS PARK AND ENTRANCE FEE

LARRY’S HILL AND HUGO SKY LOUNGE

This is one of the newest attractions in Cagayan de Oro, specifically at Amaya View (formerly Sierra del Oro) at Barangay Indahag. The place has a wide variety of things to enjoy like paragliding, the maze adventure and the ball pit, as well!

Larry’s Hill doesn’t only have all these amazing attractions to enjoy but also has a stunning view of Cagayan de Oro’s western area.

There are surely more developments coming their way so better visit the place and maybe snap a photo of the four ‘Transformers’ figures seen near the entrance.

On the other hand, Hugo Sky Lounge is another wonderful place where you could get a stunning view of the entire city and its surrounding green nature. You can also grab a bite here since this is also actually a restaurant. They sure serve great food!

The entrance fee is  50 PHP . The prices for the activities are Ball Pit  150 PHP , High Ropes Sky Level  250 PHP , High Ropes Grass Level  150 PHP , Zip Line 2 Ways  250 PHP , Rapelling from Helicopter 2 Jumps  150 PHP . It opens 8 am to 6 pm and it’s located in Indahag 10 Kilometers South of Cagayan de Oro.
