The Best Train Trips in the World 2023 Readers Choice Awards

Ah, the allure of train trips . Adventurers and the eco-conscious are drawn to this glamorous, old-world mode of exploration for the impeccable slow-travel vibes, but there’s also something to be said about the perspective found onboard a train; you’re experiencing the landscape and scenery in a way that you can’t experience in any other mode of travel. A train trip often brings you where everyday roads cannot, whether it’s through untouched Malaysian jungles on the revamped Belmond Eastern & Oriental itineraries relaunching in 2024, or high into the Canadian Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer. For our 36th annual Readers’ Choice Awards —which capture the travel experiences our readers love best, from hotels and airlines to cruises , islands , and luggage —we called on all of you to rank the best of the best rail journeys out there. Here, dear readers, is how the dice fell.

This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

20. Inca Rail, South America

If you’re interested in taking a train to Machu Picchu (and unless you’re a mountain goat, we suggest you do), Inca Rail offers a level of convenience that is difficult to match—and it’s also worth mentioning that the First Class service is priced more accessibly than other luxury operators servicing the same route. While on board, you can expect a tasty menu prepared with organic ingredients grown right in the Sacred Valley, live Peruvian music, ample windows through which you can admire the staggering Andean scenery, and a spacious Observatory Lounge complete with open-air balcony. For fresh and frothy Pisco sours this good, this is one train that’s well worth the price of admission.

19. Transcantabrico Gran Lujo, Spain

Take in all the sights and flavors of Spain ’s iconic northern coastline on this luxurious sleeper train, which over the course of a week makes its way between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela. You’ll enjoy on-board cuisine that celebrates each of the distinct regions through which this train passes, from Galicia to Basque Country. A unique aspect of this train is that it remains stationary overnight, allowing for late-night excursions and explorations that are uncommon on other sleeper train experiences.

18. Glacier Express, Switzerland

It’s been said that the Glacier Express is the slowest express in the world–it takes eight hours to traverse the 180-mile journey–but boy, do the views here invite a slow journey. Connecting the resort towns of Zermatt and Saint Moritz, the train provides an up-close perspective of some of this mountainous country’s most iconic natural features, including the Matterhorn, Piz Bernina, and the Rhine Gorge (dubbed Switzerland’s Grand Canyon). Book in Excellence Class and you’ll be served Champagne at your seat, followed by a six-course meal complete with wine pairings.

17. The Canadian, Canada

Take in every mile of the vast Canadian landscape from The Canadian , a special sleeper service offered by VIA Rail, the country’s national rail carrier. Keep in mind that this train is more about sightseeing from the cars than actually getting off and doing anything. But if you’re traveling in the comfort of Prestige Class—with your own private cabin, private washroom and built-in TV screen monitor with video selection—you’ll be perfectly content to take in the journey from the privacy of your very own picture window.

The Ghan Train Australia

16. The Ghan, Australia

Completed in 1929, The Ghan runs through the heart of the Australian continent , from Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north. It may have only started running its current route in 2004, but its history dates to the 19th century, its name harkening to the Afghan camel trainers and riders who first helped chart a course through the country’s interior. The three-day all-inclusive journey sees the train lilting its way through Australia’s Red Centre with diverse landscapes passing by. Travel through the expansive ridges of the MacDonnell Ranges, witness the awe-inspiring beauty of Simpsons Gap, and visit the opal town of Coober Pedy.

JR Kyushu 363

15. JR Kyushu 36+3, Japan

This train’s unusual name derives from Kyushu being the 36th-largest island in the world, and there being three key stakeholders on this journey: the passengers, the local community, and the rail company, JR Kyushu. It isn’t a sleeper train, instead offering a series of weeklong roster of one-day itineraries around the perimeter of Kyushu–a do one, do them all, or do as many as you like situation–but the journey is no less enriching for it. The inside feels like a ryokan, featuring immaculate woodwork made from local techniques, comfortable furniture, and a mix of private and communal spaces. It’s a gorgeous way to get off the beaten track on this gorgeous Japanese island, packing in a number of stops and towns into a single day of productive–yet comfortable–sightseeing.

14. Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train, Southeast Asia

The E&O is the stuff of train enthusiasts’ legends, and in February 2024, this storied train will at long last resume service after its pandemic-era pause–sort of. The train’s journey originally connected Singapore and Bangkok, but as of the new year will offer journeys through the jungles and coastlines of Malaysia, but all originating in and returning to Singapore. It isn’t the classic E&O route, but these new itineraries will offer deeper explorations of Malaysia than ever before, including guided snorkeling on Langkawi and excursions to Taman Negara National Park. Despite the new itineraries, the train still has all the old world touches that people love: Order a Singapore Sling in the Bar Car, take it to the outdoor viewing platform as the Malaysian jungle rolls on by, and you just might forget what year we’re living in.

13. Northern Belle, Europe

It’s all about the food—and the scenery, too, but mostly about the food—onboard this lovingly restored 1930s train , which zig-zags its way across the English, Scottish and Welsh countrysides. Each of the journeys on offer are day trips, so they require less of a time (and money) commitment than other luxury trains. But what the Northern Belle lacks in length she more than makes up for in quality: The meal services are exquisite, offering fine dining crafted mostly from U.K. suppliers, so you can enjoy classic British fare as the heaths, meadows, and dales roll on by.

12. The Maharajas' Express, India

There are luxury sleeper trains, and then there are luxury sleeper trains like the Maharaja’s Express , where a greeting of marigold garlands and rose petals showered at your feet kicks off the journey before your personal butler escorts you to your room. The Junior Suite rooms are surprisingly spacious, especially by train travel standards, and come with full-sized closets, comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and satellite TVs. Both of the on board watering holes–the Safari Bar and the Raja Club–have plenty of chairs, comfy sofas, books and board games. Each day of the itinerary includes special opportunities to experience India through the train’s luxurious and singular perspective: like an early-morning champagne breakfast on a private hillside overlooking the Taj Mahal.

Belmond Royal Scotsman. train interior

11. Royal Scotsman, A Belmond Train, Scotland

It’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Nowhere is train travel more indulgent—or convenient!—than on Belmond’s Royal Scotsman , which departs from and arrives at Edinburgh’s Waverley Station. With only 40 guests onboard, the train circumnavigates the heart of the Scottish Highlands, passing such landmarks as the Kyle of Lochalsh and Cairngorms National Park. There’s even a dedicated spa carriage, where the specialists are trained to synchronize their motions with the natural lilts and tilts of the train. If that’s not luxury, we’re not sure what is.

Belmond Hiram Bingham

10. Belmond Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train, South America

Named after the U.S. explorer who supposedly “discovered” Machu Picchu in 1911, the Belmond Hiram Bingham train line is as grand as the man’s claims. The round-trip journey connects the city of Poroy (just west of Cuzco) to the Lost City and Sacred Valley of Machu Picchu. The Belmond Hiram Bingham turns on the turn-of-the-20th-century charm, from gleaming polished wood and brass surfaces to lavish meals and accommodations, which offer plenty of space to stretch out: the perfect setting for viewing the mountains and rivers zooming past the window.

9. Golden Chariot, India

Experience a mix of Southern India’s greatest hits and lesser-explored destinations on board the iconic purple and gold Golden Chariot , which connects the Indian states of Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. All itineraries depart from Bengaluru, with options for both three-night and six-night journeys. This train’s strength is its access to off-beat attractions than what you’ll find on the well-worn Golden Triangle, such as the ruins of Hampi. With sparse crowds, and a comfortable train to retreat to at the end of each day, it’s an approach to India that captures all the magic this country has to offer.

8. Golden Eagle Danube Express, Europe

A pioneer in luxury trains for three decades, Golden Eagle is perhaps best known for its Silk Road and Trans-Siberian routes, but the Danube Express unlocks an approach to Southern and Eastern Europe which is no less breathtaking and engaging. The “Castles of Transylvania” route from Istanbul to Budapest is particularly unique–spend all day learning about Vlad the Impaler’s history through guided tours, then spend all night luxuriating in the comfort of the bar car or in the privacy of your room. It’s a combination of Europe’s best cities and most dramatic natural landscapes that is hard to experience in one go any other way.

Rocky Mountaineer

7. Rocky Mountaineer, North America

Traveling in a coach outfitted with picture windows and glass-dome ceilings means that a Rocky Mountaineer journey leaves no sight unseen as you traverse the dramatic scenery between Vancouver , British Columbia and Banff or Jasper, Alberta. Sample local Canadian beer, wine and snacks as you kick back and enjoy the ride. The staff’s friendly service and animated storytelling help bring the landscape to life. It’s personal touches like those which keep travelers coming away from this trip amply satisfied time and time again. Since it was founded in 1990, Rocky Mountaineer has transported more than two million guests, making it the largest privately-owned premium tourist train in the world.

6. Rovos Rail, Africa

This extravagant railway has been traveling throughout Africa for over thirty years. The experiences start before you even board—when departing from Pretoria, Rovos Rail travelers are granted exclusive access to a private lounge, where Champagne and canapés greet them—and a strict “no cellphone” rule is maintained for your own good. Enjoy the moment(s) provided by this line, which range from cozy digs to formal-attired evenings, as well as full-sized, freestanding clawfoot tubs in the most grand compartments. All Rovos Rail journeys include off-train cultural, historical and safari excursions so guests can experience all the wonders that Southern Africa has to offer. The three-night Cape Town journey is a classic, but if you’re feeling extra adventurous and have a few more nights to spare, opt for the newer fifteen-day “Trail of Two Oceans” itinerary, originating in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, crossing Zambia, traversing a sliver of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and concluding in Lobito, Angola.

Belmond Andean Explorer

5. Belmond Andean Explorer, A Belmond Train, South America

Weaving through the Peruvian Andes at 14,000 feet, the Belmond Andean Explorer transports passengers between Arequipa and Cusco on one- and two-night journeys. There are just thirty-five cabins on board, each outfitted with alpaca wool blankets and handwoven fabrics for an authentic yet luxe feel. Two dining cars and two bar cars serve the whims of every guest with bites like alpaca tortellini and (of course) champagne. The train also makes excursions to Lake Titicaca , where guests can learn about local customs, visit Incan ruins, and take in breath-taking views.

Belmond British Pullman

4. British Pullman, A Belmond Train, England

The British Pullman ’s experience is magical no matter where you’re seated. Once you depart London , you’ll embark on a journey through the bucolic British countryside, touring cities and towns like Cambridge, York, and Canterbury along the way. The restored carriages date back to the 1920s and 1930s, so expect Art Deco touches, polished interiors, and classically prepared multi-course meals—this is the same train line that has served British royalty and government officials for years, after all.

train interior

3. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Europe

Year after year, the world’s most iconic locomotive continues to be a standard-setter in luxury. Of course, the decadent interiors are a fantasy of 1920’s Art Deco design, but it’s the impeccable service that keeps this train firmly ensconced in a class of its own. Bags are whisked off from the platform and magically reappear in your cabin, no glass ever runs empty, and the beds seem to make themselves anytime you step outside of your cabin. By day you can revel in the scenery of French countrysides and Swiss mountain scenes, and by night, the formal dress code feels anything but stuffy—in fact, playing dress up and making your way to the Champagne bar is, we think, one of the coolest experiences anyone could have on a train. For 2023, this over-the-top train is getting even more luxe updates, including eight new suites, two of which are original 1920s and 30s carriages carefully restored by expert French craftsmen and designers–so there’s no time like the present to book that bucket-list trip.

Palace on Wheels Train

2. Palace on Wheels, India

India’s best-known train, the Palace on Wheels , offers a number of trips that range from a couple days to week-long excursions. Embarking from New Delhi through the Land of Kings, trips take you through the famed Pink City of Jaipur, in Rajasthan, where guests are greeted by majestic UNESCO sites like the Amer Fort as well as 16th century palaces. You can also visit Agra, home to the Taj Mahal and the perfect stop for a tour of some of the country's most iconic sites. Along the way, enjoy regional cuisine in well-appointed, colorful carriages decked out in Indian textiles.

Seven Stars Kyushu

1. Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan

Train lovers consider this opulent Japanese locomotive among the most spacious and comfortable of them all. Every inch of Seven Stars' Kyushu train—from the beds, to the bathroom sinks, to the woodwork, to the porcelain dinner plates—is handmade by Japanese artisans, and the service is simply exquisite, with each journey limited to a positively intimate twenty passengers; but it’s not just about the onboard experience with Seven Stars. These four-day, three-night trips travel a circuit around the island of Kyushu, making stops at the region’s best shrines, onsens, porcelain studios, and more, so you truly feel like you’re exploring an authentic side of Japan , far away from the more obvious tourist tracks.

You’re in for iconic design, high-end service and absolute opulence on these dazzling journeys

John Bills

Travelling by rail can be one of the most luxurious ways of getting around. And no, we aren’t just talking about the Orient Express (though that is, indeed, very fancy). The world is full of opulent, luxe rail routes – and they come in all shapes and sizes. Some are veritable palaces on wheels, whilst others offer dazzling views or fine dining, and they offer you the chance to see the world at a much more leisurely pace – no zooming past mountains here.

But it’s not just the journey worth boarding for. So many routes are built around packages for travellers which often include plenty of day trips and stop-offs around every corner – kind of like a cruise. It isn’t just the train that’s fancy, it’s the entire trip, so get ready to be amazed, as here is our pick of the very best luxury train routes from across the world.

Best luxury train rides in the world

Rocky Mountaineer

1.  Rocky Mountaineer

Faultless service, delicious food and comfortable seats are all an integral part of the luxury train experience, but you can’t beat the overwhelming majesty of nature. Canada ’s Rocky Mountaineer train understands this, hence the panoramic views, opening up the wonder of the route between Vancouver and Banff for all to enjoy. Sure, economy seats are available, but they don’t come with the views, so go all out and allow yourself this top-notch two-night experience.

The Deccan Odyssey

2.  The Deccan Odyssey

India knows exactly how to put together a luxury tourist train. A spin-off of the famed Palace on Wheels, the Deccan Odyssey offers six different routes, from the hidden splendour of Gujarat to the natural magic of Maharashtra, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them. It is mind-bendingly expensive (tickets start at $8,330 or £6,500), but who expects low prices to follow the word ‘luxury’? Fools, that’s who. You are basically travelling in a limousine on wheels across one of the world’s biggest countries, after all.

The Ghan

3.  The Ghan

Australia is a land of iconic travel experiences, and a trip on The Ghan is right up there, a trundling train treat that coasts from Darwin to Adelaide . Keen geographers will realise that the train runs from the very northern tip of Australia to the bottom, making The Ghan a unique way to see the heart of this fantastic nation. There isn’t a whole lot in the centre of Australia (a lot of camels, by the way), but the overwhelming immensity of it all is incredible. The name is a shortened take on the route’s original moniker, The Afghan Express.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

4.  Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

When one thinks of luxurious trains, the Orient Express immediately forces its way into the discussion. How could it not? This iconic train has been immortalised in literature, cinema and everything else since it first set off in 1883, covering the distance between Paris and Istanbul (then Constantinople) in less than 76 hours. It was known as the world’s most luxurious train for a reason, all glass panels, refined leather seats and beds that offered the sort of sleep that, yes, travellers can only dream of. Seven historic cars have been renovated for the modern day, bringing the 1800s glamour into the twenty-first century.

Seven Stars in Kyushu

5.  Seven Stars in Kyushu

Japan ’s finest luxury train experience is undoubtedly the Seven Stars in Kyushu, a circular tour from Hakata that runs through Nagasaki and Yufuin over two days. A four-day option is also available, perfect for those who have money to spare and are looking for a seven-star (yes,  seven ) railway experience. Trains in Japan are a thing of wonder, but there is something about the Seven Stars that makes it stand out. It is a gorgeous celebration of Japanese art, from the walls to the cabins to washbasins.

The Eastern & Oriental Express

6.  The Eastern & Oriental Express

The world-famous Orient Express is somewhat incorrectly titled, seeing as it travels around Europe and Europe alone. But this route from Bangkok to Singapore ticks more boxes on the moniker front. It also runs through a stretch of scenery that will take your breath away, if that breath hasn’t already been snatched by the onboard decor and tremendous service. Ancient wonders and cosmopolitan cities collide (not literally) in a blur of exquisite glamour aboard this stunner. Tickets can stretch upwards of $3,200 (£2,700), but you very much pay for what you get.

Rovos Rail

7.  Rovos Rail

Africa ’s premium train journey experience is undoubtedly the Rovos Rail, with a variety of trips available covering everything from 48-hour runs to 15-day explorative itineraries. These bespoke trains are a sight to behold, with gorgeous armchairs and all the wine one can handle waiting within. Throw in a stunning dining car, observation decks and a total absence of TV and radio, and you’ve got a nostalgic experience to remember.

8.  The Heritage Palace on Wheels

The Heritage Palace on Wheels (FKA The Palace on Wheels) has 14 luxurious cabins with all the mod cons, but it is the dining section on this beauty that really take the breath away. The food is spectacular in and of itself, but the decor and design make dining on the Heritage Palace on Wheels one of India ’s great romantic experiences. The famous name has since incorporated the Royal Rajasthan on Wheels into its stable, although the insecurity of the past few years has rendered the train’s future somewhat uncertain. Climb aboard while you still can.

9.  The Blue Train

Traversing the 1,600km or so between Pretoria and Cape Town by train is one of South Africa ’s most amazing travel experiences, so why not go all out and embrace the luxury of it all? One of the fanciest trains on the planet, The Blue Train styles itself as a window into the soul of Africa and we’re inclined to agree.

The Royal Scotsman

10.  The Royal Scotsman

The UK ’s most famous train now exists as an opulent reminder of a very different time. The name remains in use as modern trains hurtle between Edinburgh and London , but those looking to climb aboard the iconic locomotive of yesteryear must dig deep into their pockets and dress to the nines as they do. Still, it is worth it, right? The Flying Scotsman is an exercise in British luxury, a time machine to the nineteenth century through the eyes of a very wealthy traveller indeed.

11.  Belmond Andean Explorer

South America ’s first luxury sleeper train first set off in May 2017, bringing the romance of the rails to this most romantic of continents. The train runs from Cusco (the capital of the Incan Empire, no less) to the white city of Arequipa, showcasing the best of the Peruvian Andes along the way.

With a menu featuring caviar from nearby Frutigen and bottles of crisp Duval-Leroy Brut Champagne, this promises to be a short but very sweet service.

How to do it: A one-way Prestige class ticket costs CHF128 (£115).

Running between Tokyo’s Asakusa station and the city of Nikko, in Tochigi Prefecture, this train provides a stylish way of making the two-hour journey north. Taking inspiration from the Edo period, the window frames incorporate intricate geometrical patterns used in bamboo wickerwork. Alongside traditional train seating, Spacia X also includes compartments, sofas and lounge-style seats. From the premium Cockpit Suite, passengers will get a driver’s view of the journey as they shoot past mountains, waterfalls and temples.

How to do it: Tickets can be bought online or from any station on the Tobu line. A one-way ticket starts from 1,400 Yen (£7.50).

5. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express , France

In December 2023, Belmond’s Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will launch four new routes between Paris and the French Alps, trundling through snow-covered forests and foothills towards the stations of Albertville, Moûtiers and Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Passengers are given the option of snuggling down between damask sheets in Historic Cabins, Suites or Grand Suites before disembarking the following afternoon. Expect seasonal dishes in three different dining cars, clinking crystal glasses in the bar car and freshly baked viennoiserie served in bed.

How to do it: A stay in a Historic Cabin starts at £3,785 per person, including dinner, breakfast and brunch. belmond.com

Pack your formal wear for dinner on board and comfortable clothes and shoes for detraining from time to time to connect with the locals in the isle’s seven prefectures. Immerse yourself in healing hot springs. Seek out invigorating “power spots” to refresh your body, mind, and soul.

The Great Southern

Embark on a Journey Beyond rail expedition to the rugged coastline, unique outback, and intriguing capital cities of southeast Australia in summer (December through February in the Southern Hemisphere). On the three-day, two-night Adelaide to Brisbane route, take in Pomonal Estate with its award-winning wines, microbrews, and ciders before taking a helicopter tour of neighboring Grampians National Park. In the national capital of Canberra, dine in the Old Parliament House and learn more about its architecture and art. Or with an extra day and night on the reverse route, spot playful bottlenose dolphins as you cruise Nelson Bay on a 54-foot catamaran and get to know Melbourne, the Victoria State capital, with a 90-minute guided walking tour. Book the platinum level for first-class service and premium extras like a full-size en suite, expansive window views from both sides of the train, and exclusive use of the Platinum Club carriage.

Go wild and venture into the heart of the South African bushveld with a two-night safari, departing from either Pretoria or Durban during the summer months. Participate in a game drive in Nambiti Private Game Reserve, the only one in the area to boast the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, African buffalo, and rhinoceroses). Admire art inspired by nature and Zulu folklore at the Ardmore Ceramics gallery. Glide through the breathtaking Valley of a Thousand Hills. Opt for a Royal Suite, which encompasses half a carriage, with its private lounge area and en suite Victorian bath. And peruse the other journeys Rovos Rail has to offer to find the one that piques your interest. If you can't decide between them, then personalize your itinerary by combining short and long journeys.

Andean Explorer

Meander through the Andes for a night or two on one of the world’s highest train routes, Belmond's Andean Explorer . Notice the train’s contemporary aesthetic with light earthen tones pierced by vibrantly colored accents and textured leather and alpaca wool. Select from five journeys uncovering the spirit and hidden gems of Peru. Marvel at Islas Uros, a collection of man-made islands using buoyant reeds to stay afloat on the tranquil Lake Titicaca. On your way to Cuzco, stop by the La Raya market, a colorful stretch of stalls brimming with handicrafts. Pamper yourself for an hour or so in the spa car with treatments based on Andean rituals using botanical blends sourced from the surrounding landscape.

There’s something timeless about traveling aboard a luxury train: the white-glove service, the exotic scenery rushing by, the rhythm of the rails rocking you to sleep in your own comfortable private berth. While luxury train trips operate all over the world, only a few rise to the top as being truly unforgettable.

The 15 Most Scenic Amtrak Routes in America

Luxury Train Trips

Below I’ve picked the six best luxury train trips, taking you to places as far-flung as Bangkok, Cape Town, and Moscow. These trains provide all accommodations in private compartments for two or more, plus inclusive dining and other onboard services.

Legendary: The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

luxury train trips around the world

Easily the top of the top, this modern incarnation of the world’s most famous train, the Orient Express, evokes images of the colorful Middle East, mysterious Eastern Europe, and, of course, classic mystery with Agatha Christie character Hercule Poirot. Recently reopened rail connections allow the train to complete its original itinerary between Paris and Istanbul, which it does  once a year; overnight stops include Budapest and Bucharest. The base price for Paris-Istanbul is about $20,300 (per person, double occupancy). Unlike other luxury trains, the Orient Express does not have onboard showers, so the five-night schedule involves three nights on the train and two in hotels along the way.

The train is owned and operated by  Belmond ; it consists of historic cars restored to modern requirements. Twin cabins, with upper and lower berths, include washbasins; lavatories are at either end of the car.

If you don’t want to go as far as Istanbul, Belmond offers dozens of routes around Europe and the U.K., on itineraries lasting from overnight to six days. Pricing generally starts around $3,500 per person for a two-day, one-night trip, although Belmond offers occasional promotional deals.

Distance Champ: The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express

luxury train trips around the world

Eight times per year, May through September, this luxury train trip takes you between Moscow and Vladivostok over 12 nights by way of Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Lake Baikal, and Ulaanbaatar. The train stops for local sightseeing at several places along the way. The base price in 2020 starts at $16,995 per person, double occupancy.

The  Golden Eagle train  consists of modern equipment with three cabin classes, all including private toilets and showers. Silver cabins offer either small double beds or bunks; higher categories are larger with full beds.

The Golden Eagle folks run four different trains over a range of other itineraries, including several through the “Silk Road” areas of central Asia. They also run a separate Danube Express on a wide variety of European itineraries. As with Belmond, pricing generally starts at around $1,000 per person, per day. Some trips include use of steam locomotives over part of the journey.

10 Speedy Train Routes in Europe That Are Faster Than Flying

Most Varied Attractions Along the Way: Pride of Africa

luxury train trips around the world

On the Pride of Africa train, Rovos Rail provides five luxury train trips a year on a 15-day itinerary from Cape Town to Dar Es Salaam or the reverse, passing through Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania, and including stops at a game reserve and Victoria Falls. Prices for the trip start at $12,820 per person (double occupancy).

The Pride of Africa uses mainly older equipment updated to current standards. All compartments include double or twin beds, toilet, and shower. Some trips are pulled by steam locomotives.

Rovos Rail operates the Pride of Africa on a wide range of other itineraries in South Africa and adjacent countries, some including safari stops.

High Altitude: The Andean Explorer

Belmond Andea Explorer luxury train interior.

The Andean Explorer , another Belmond operation, runs weekly two-night trips linking Cusco with Arequipa via Lake Titicaca, with a lake excursion included. Prices start at around $2,100 per person for the two-night, three-day trip. This is literally the highest of the deluxe trains, reaching altitudes up to 14,000 feet along the way, however, so you might want to skip this one (or bring medications) if you have problems with altitude.

The Andean Explorer train includes three levels of cabin, all with private shower, plus an observation lounge, and spa cars. Belmond also operates the deluxe day train Hiram Bingham between Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Exotic Asia: Eastern & Oriental Express

Oriental Express Belmond luxury train.

Belmond’s East Asian luxury train travels between Bangkok and Singapore twice monthly. The two- and three-night itineraries run through some of Thailand’s top scenic areas and take a detour to the famous River Kwai bridge. Prices start at $3,630 per person for the trip. You can also start or end the trip in Kuala Lumpur rather than Singapore.

The Eastern & Oriental Express train consists of modern cars built to luxury standards. It offers three levels of cabin, all of which include private shower and lavatory, plus dining and observation cars. Belmond also runs other regional excursions with the train.

Most Frugal: Palace on Wheels

luxury train trips around the world

The Palace on Wheels and its four siblings cruise through northern and southern India. The Palace on Wheels, Maharaja’s Express and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels cover mainly seve-day loop itineraries to and from Delhi, with a few Delhi-Mumbai trips; most include a stop at Agra for the Taj Mahal. The Deccan Odyssey and Golden Chariot operate similar patterns centered on Bangalore and Mumbai.

Pricing is seasonal, starting at $500 per person, per night, on the Palace on Wheels. The several trains also run occasional promotions, such as seven nights for the price of five and 50 percent companion discounts.

Deluxe Indian trains use modern equipment, generally with decor inspired by Bollywood’s best extravaganzas. All cabins include a private toilet and shower.

The Top 15 Luxury Train Rides Around the World

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

Published on: October 23rd, 2017

Last modified: April 19th, 2024

Of all the endless ways to explore the world, there’s an enduring allure to luxury train travel. Something about stepping from the platform onto the carriage, settling into a sumptuous seat and watching the scenery slowly slide by allows you to appreciate the journey just as much as the destination – and ultimately, that’s what travel is all about.

Perhaps the most famous train in the world is the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express : an absolute icon of 20th-century luxury rail journeys. It’s still one of the most luxurious trains in the world, transporting passengers back to the ‘golden age of travel’ with art deco details and timeless elegance to match its storied reputation.

That said, these days you can enjoy luxury train rides all over the globe. Their opulent cars wind through the peaks of the Andes and the Alps ; around the islands of Singapore and Japan ; across the vast wilderness of Australia and Africa ; and between the grandest capitals of Europe . If you want to travel in true style, consider booking one of the world’s best luxury train journeys.

1. The Eastern & Oriental Express

Although its European counterpart may be more well known, this Orient Express is equally enchanting. Under the esteemed luxury Belmond umbrella, the Eastern & Oriental Express traverses two routes through Malaysia. Both journeys begin and end in Singapore, travelling either along the idyllic coast or through lush inland rainforests.

Eastern Oriental Express

On board you’ll enjoy intricately decorated cabins and suites, refined Malaysian cuisine and artisanal cocktails. At each intriguing stop you might have the chance to relax on pristine white sand beaches, learn about efforts to save the endangered Malayan Tiger or get to know the country’s culture through cooking classes and conversations with locals.

Eastern Oriental Express

2. The Vietage

With room for just 12 passengers total in its luxurious train cabins , The Vietage is a truly exclusive rail journey through some of Vietnam ’s most spectacular landscapes. Each day it makes only two trips, departing from Da Nang in the morning to reach Quy Nhon in the afternoon, and then returning from Quy Nhon to Da Nang in the evening.

Vietage train

Both ends of this journey are special in their own right. Da Nang is a historic port city just an hour away from the charming town of Hoi An , while Quy Nhon is a largely undiscovered coastal destination boasting postcard-worthy beaches and fishing villages. The Vietage links them with a lovely six-hour trip, earning it a spot among our top travel tips for Asia in 2024 .

3. Seven Stars Kyushu

The Seven Stars Kyushu is undoubtedly among Japan ’s most luxurious experiences, and yet many travellers have never heard of it. One reason is that tickets are notoriously hard to come by, as they’re reserved far in advance through a lottery system. But if you’re willing to try your luck, it’s well worth designing your entire trip around this unforgettable train journey.

4. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is nothing short of legendary, and it remains one of the best luxury train trips on earth. Its beautifully restored carriages echo the chic elegance of the 1920s, from spacious suites and historic cabins to the lavish dining areas and ritzy bar car – where you can indulge in a decadent ‘midnight brunch’ after hours.

luxury train trips around the world

This world-renowned train offers various itineraries, crisscrossing Europe between grand cities like Paris, Prague, Budapest, Brussels and, of course, Venice. Although most of its journeys are only overnight, you can also opt for a round-trip adventure between Paris and Budapest or Vienna, in which case you’ll spend two nights aboard the train and two at local hotels.

5. Belmond Royal Scotsman

Perhaps the most magical way to experience the Scottish Highlands is aboard the Belmond Royal Scotsman . This opulent train wends its way through some of Scotland ’s most remote and untouched landscapes, promising privileged views of its rolling hills, glittering lochs and historical landmarks.

The Royal Scotsman

The train itself offers delightfully cosy cabins and suites decked out in a sophisticated blend of local tradition and modern style. The Dior Spa carriage is especially inviting, as are the Raven and Swift dining cars, where you’ll be served exquisite haute cuisine. Whisky lovers can embark on an exclusive four-night trip featuring tastings and distillery tours as well.

6. Glacier Express

There’s no shortage of stunning train journeys in Switzerland , from Alpine peaks to Lake Geneva – and the meandering Glacier Express is certainly one of our favourites. Its leisurely pace allows you to fully appreciate the scenic route from Zermatt to Andermatt to St. Moritz , which includes countless bridges, tunnels and dazzling views.

Glacier Express Train ith Landwasser Viaduct

The train’s three restaurants allow you to dine in style while passing through Europe’s magnificent countryside. Food is freshly prepared daily, with ingredients locally sourced and collected during the train’s stops. Our favourite part of the train is the champagne bar, the perfect place to enjoy a glass of bubbly or an expertly mixed cocktail.

7. The Bergen Railway

Known as the Bergensbanen among locals, the Bergen Railway traverses Norway ’s vast Hardangervidda Plateau. It carries passengers between the country’s lively capital of Oslo and the colourful port city of Bergen . Along the way you’ll pass through some of Scandinavia’s most dramatic scenery: about seven hours’ worth of fjords, valleys and mountains to marvel at.

luxury train trips around the world

Although the views are best during daylight, you can also book a night train to get some rest in a comfortable sleeping compartment. And if you’re travelling with kids, the family carriage provides plenty of entertainment for little ones. The Bergensbanen is also famous for Gudrun and Halldis Folkedal: twin sisters and train drivers who are known as the ‘queens of the railway.’

8. Presidential Train

The Presidential Train, or Comboio Presidencial , is a genuine piece of Portuguese history. It transported royals and dignitaries across Portugal in its five splendid carriages before being retired in 1970. It came out of retirement in 2016 after an extensive restoration process, only to cease operations again a few years later… but now it’s back once more.

Presidential Train

In 2024, the Presidential Train will return with a schedule of just 20 incredibly exclusive journeys. Each trip will take passengers from Porto to one of ten different wine estates in the Douro Valley . Onboard cuisine will be overseen by the renowned Chef Chakall, incorporating specialties from local restaurants to ensure authenticity and support the region’s communities.

Presidential Train

9. Belmond British Pullman

The Belmond British Pullman accounts for a good number of the most glamorous train journeys in Great Britain , with an illustrious history dating back nearly a hundred years. Today it offers an array of day trips throughout the English countryside, including round-trip itineraries from London to the likes of Bath , Kent and Oxfordshire.

British Pullman

We’re especially intrigued by the ‘Moving Murder Mystery’: an immersive experience that invites you to solve a classic case à la Agatha Christie – as you enjoy champagne and a five-course feast, of course. Choose a table or a private coupe in the whimsical Cygnus carriage, designed by filmmaker Wes Anderson, for an especially cinematic experience.

British Pullman

10. Blue Train

The iconic hue of the Blue Train makes it instantly recognisable from afar, but you’ll need to step aboard to discover the depths of its charm. It’s one of South Africa ’s leading luxury trains, regularly undertaking the 54-hour journey between Cape Town and Pretoria – and now the 19-hour trip from Pretoria to Kruger National Park as well.

Blue train

The train’s interior is plush yet understated, its luxury suites and lounge cars imbued with a sense of classic glamour. You can cross the country on one of its regular routes or charter the entire train for a private journey, which is customisable according to the occasion and your preferred destinations and timings.

11. Rovos Rail

The esteemed Rovos Rail has only been in operation for a few decades, but it captures all the vintage appeal of a bygone era. Choose from almost a dozen different itineraries based on your interests; you can take a relatively short journey between Pretoria and Victoria Falls , Durban or Cape Town – or opt for a longer trip that lasts between 9 and 15 nights.

luxury train trips around the world

These longer routes include safari adventures and grand tours of the whole of Southern Africa, including Namibia , Zimbabwe , Botswana and beyond. You can explore this end of the continent in total comfort, whether you’re watching the magnificent scenery glide past from the quiet common areas, sipping a South African wine in the dining car or relaxing in your suite.

12. The Ghan

The Ghan is an Australian icon with a history stretching back nearly a century. These days it’s one of the best ways to explore this enormous country, travelling all the way from Darwin on the northern coast to Adelaide in the south. Its longest itinerary, known as The Ghan Expedition, is an all-inclusive three-night experience showcasing the best of the Outback .

The Ghan

On board The Ghan you’ll find sophisticated modern style, multi-course meals and impeccable service, whether you choose to travel in Gold, Gold Premium or Platinum class. One of the biggest perks is the fact that all food, drinks and excursions are included in the fare, so you can simply sit back and enjoy the journey without a care in the world.

The Ghan interior cabin

13. The Indian Pacific

As you might be able to guess from its name, The Indian Pacific travels from east to west (and vice versa) across Australia , between Perth on the Indian Ocean and Sydney on the Pacific coast. You can either opt for the full three-night journey to cover the whole country, or a one- or two-night trip from Perth or Sydney to Adelaide .

Indian Pacific Train

The Indian Pacific is all-inclusive, with every detail designed to make your experience seamless. The cabins convert from lounge spaces to sleeping compartments at night, and the Queen Adelaide Restaurant serves upscale local cuisine. Train enthusiasts will enjoy the fact that the section of the trip from Kalgoorlie to Port Pirie is the longest single stretch of railway on earth.

Indian Pacific Train

14. Belmond Andean Explorer

The exceptional Belmond Andean Explorer embodies the principles of slow travel . It takes passengers on an odyssey through the wonders of Peru – from Cusco to Lake Titicaca and Arequipa – at a pace that allows for total immersion. This is especially welcome in the high altitudes of the Andes, and its Picaflor spa even offers an altitude acclimatisation treatment.

andean explorer

The rest of the train is almost as tranquil as the spa car, with a decidedly modern aesthetic that contrasts with many other luxury trains’ vintage style. You’ll find touches of local culture throughout, from the elevated Peruvian cuisine in the dining cars to the traditional patterns and alpaca-wool textiles in the snug cabins.

15. Belmond Hiram Bingham

There are many ways to reach the mythic site of Machu Picchu , but the Belmond Hiram Bingham is undoubtedly the most memorable. Departing from Cusco , it whisks you away through the Sacred Valley and towards the lofty remains of the Inca Empire. The three-hour trip to these legendary ruins includes a locally sourced lunch with wine and cocktails.

hiram binghan

After experiencing the magic of Machu Picchu, you’ll return to the Hiram Bingham for an unforgettable return trip. This is arguably the best part of the journey, featuring an excellent four-course dinner, top-notch mixology (try the Pisco sour) and often live music. It’s the perfect way to cap off your visit to one of Latin America ’s most magnificent destinations.

With the growing popularity of slow travel, experiencing the world on luxury trains has become one of the most coveted forms of travel. While just one ride can elevate a dream vacation, train tour operator Railbookers just announced the 2024 departures of its 80-day trip around the world, which includes journeys on seven of the globe’s most luxurious rail experiences.

Simply called Around the World By Luxury Train , the epic vacation departs Vancouver on Aug. 28, 2024, riding the rails in 13 countries on four continents, before ending in November in Singapore. Along the way, there are 52 nights in upscale accommodations in more than 20 cities, but the true highlight is the 24 nights in private cabins on the rails, experiencing the best in global train travel — all in one easily bookable trip.

The itinerary includes GoldLeaf Service on Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Jasper ; a twin cabin on Belmond Royal Scotsman’s Grand Western Scenic Wonders , a round trip from Edinburgh; a historic cabin on Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, A Belmond Train, from Paris to Venice ; a deluxe cabin on Maharajas Express ’ The Indian Splendour Tour from Delhi to Mumbai; a deluxe cabin on Golden Eagle Danube Express from Istanbul to Budapest; a Pullman suite on the Rovos Rail from Pretoria to Cape Town; and wrapping up with another Pullman cabin on the Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train ’s Essence of Malaysia .

“The demand for luxury rail from our customers continues to grow, and in response, we’ve created the ultimate bucket-list trip,” Frank Marini, Railbookers’ president and CEO, said in a statement obtained by Travel + Leisure . “As we’ve seen a trend to combine itineraries to include multiple luxury trains, we’ve tailor-made this itinerary along with smaller, customizable itineraries featuring these iconic trains as a highlight of our industry-leading luxury rail collection.”

In between the railways, the itinerary is just as iconic, with experiences like touring Rome at night in a vintage car, traveling to Victoria’s Butchart Gardens in Canada by seaplane, safari game drives in Kruger National Park, a Moulin Rouge dinner show in Paris, a hot air balloon ride in Turkey’s Cappadocia, and other unbelievable experiences in London, Florence, Edinburgh, Venice, Cape Town, Delhi, Mumbai, Malaysia, and more. Throughout the trip, airport, station, and hotel transfers are provided, but note that international flights are not included.

The entire 80-day trip with all seven train segments starts at $113,599 per person, based on double occupancy. Booking can also be made for segmented portions. The itineraries are just one of the more than 6,000 Railbookers itineraries offered around the world.

As Belmond’s Gary Franklin said in a statement: “This is the ultimate, once-in-a-lifetime trip.”

With a schedule rotating throughout the year, would-be train travelers with deep pockets can sleep in historic, restored cabins from the 1920s that come outfitted with a single bed or bunk beds; art deco-inspired suites featuring private en suite bathrooms; or Grand Suites that draw inspiration from different European cities and offer 24-hour butler service and free-flowing Champagne.

Outside the cabins, there are stunning dining cars to take your meals in (or you can have breakfast in bed), bespoke cocktails served at Bar Car '3674' and even a "midnight brunch" that offers the chance to wash down lobster rolls with a Negroni while listening to a pianist play the night away.

Just know that a trip on a train as glam as the VSOE comes with an equally opulent price tag. Single-night journeys in one of the entry-level cabins start at more than $3,100 a person, while suites are closer to $6,000 per person. Longer trips — like the once-a-year, five-night journey from Paris to Istanbul — come in at more than $18,000 per person.

Seven Stars Kyushu

luxury train trips around the world

We all know that trains in Japan are better than those available in most places — but usually, we're talking about the Shinkansen (bullet train). On Kyushu, Japan's third-largest island, the Seven Stars train moves at a much more leisurely pace and is designed to show off the beauty of the island (spread across seven prefectures) in an ultra-luxurious environment (spread across seven train cars).

Available for one- or three-night experiences, Seven Stars offers guests opportunities to see historical towns surrounded by gorgeous scenery, plus the option to spend one night off the train in a ryokan (a traditional Japanese inn) during the longer experiences. The train has observatory-style windows that make it easier to see the world go by, as well as beautiful wooden interiors, a moody lounge car called Blue Moon and a restaurant car, Juniper, where fresh, seasonal Japanese food is served throughout the day.

But even though Japan is finally opening back up to tourists , don't think you can just go online and book a ticket for this train — it's way more complicated than that. With only 14 suites that each accommodate two guests, space is limited. To get a reservation, you'll need to apply online. If there are too many applications — which there usually are — potential guests are entered into a lottery for the chance to book a journey. A one-night trip starts around $4,500 per person based on double occupancy, while the three-night experience will set you back $8,600 per person.

Andean Explorer

luxury train trips around the world

Another luxe train from Belmond, the Andean Explorer , is a stunning 16-car train that operates on the world's highest rail route in Peru. With a mix of modern and bright design alongside Peruvian touches like throw pillows with bright tassels, the train itself feels fresh, fun and accommodating.

Featuring 35 cabins, the train offers plenty of room to spread out. To keep guests safe and comfortable throughout the high-altitude journey, each cabin has special oxygen systems.

For food, guests can enjoy meals in two dining cars, fittingly called Llama and Muña, that feel more like the dining room of a New York City townhome than a train. After meals, enjoy live music from a grand piano in the lounge car while sipping on Peru's classic cocktail, the Pisco sour. There's even a covered outdoor area at the back of the train to get some fresh mountain air on the way.

Available itineraries include two-night journeys from Cusco to Arequipa through Puno and a one-night adventure from Puno to Arequipa, among other stunning options. Rates vary depending on itineraries but start around $2,400 for double occupancy on a one-night journey in a bunk bed cabin.

The Vietage

luxury train trips around the world

While most luxury train journeys are more about the experience on the train than the stops you make along the way, The Vietage in Vietnam is slightly different.

Created as a luxurious way for guests to travel between the Anantara Hoi An Resort and the Anantara Quy Nhon Villas, The Vietage is a private, reservation-only carriage on a train that makes daily return trips between Da Nang and Quy Nohn. But don't think it's exclusive to guests of those resorts. Anybody can ride Vietnam's most luxe train experience.

With space for just 12 guests across six booths, The Vietage gives guests ample opportunities to indulge in three-course meals featuring Vietnamese and French flavors, have a bespoke cocktail from the carriage's mixologist, enjoy a shoulder massage or simply sit back in the comfortable chairs and watch the scenery of Vietnam zip by. On the evening return journey, sleeper booths are available for advance booking.

To book a one-way journey on this high-end train, expect to pay $350 per person.

Eastern & Oriental Express

luxury train trips around the world

In Southeast Asia, there's no train experience grander than Belmond's Eastern & Oriental Express , which travels between major cities like Bangkok , Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With a rich interior full of wood-paneled walls, silk furniture and subtle nods to Asian design, the train itself is immaculate.

There's a plush dining car with white-linen covered tables where guests can enjoy dishes like Nyonya curry and pan-fried scallops. In the bar car, sip on signature cocktails in over-the-top golden pineapple cups while a pianist floods the space with music. Or, for a quieter experience, head to the observation car in the back of the train to get outside for a breath of fresh air.

Accommodations range from bunk bed cabins to the Presidential Cabin, all with en suite bathrooms and windows. Right now, the Eastern & Oriental Express is out of service but will return with new itineraries for 2023 in the near future.

The Great Southern

luxury train trips around the world

While Australia 's Journey Beyond rail company offers a handful of train experiences that criss-cross the country, TPG's own Eric Rosen experienced The Great Southern journey himself . Traveling on the three-night itinerary from Brisbane to Adelaide, Rosen opted for the Platinum elevated service class, which included a room with an en suite bathroom. It was comfortable, though he found the shower on the small side.

For Rosen, "the train felt like a destination in and of itself." That makes sense considering it has various lounge and restaurant cars where meals and cocktails are served to guests as Australia passes by outside the windows. (Just remember, access to these cars is dependent on what service level you book.)

Additionally, guests have plenty of opportunities to get off the train to enjoy activities like wine-tasting tours at vineyards and even dolphin-spotting excursions.

Fares for 2023 trips on The Great Southern start at $2,345 per person for a Gold Twin cabin, though we'd recommend booking the Platinum category, at $4,495 per person.

Royal Scotsman

luxury train trips around the world

Train travel hits different in Scotland , evoking images of picture-perfect bridges like the Glenfinnan Viaduct made famous by its appearance in the "Harry Potter" film series. Though the train to Hogwarts is fictional (or so us muggles are told), the Royal Scotsman from Belmond is just as magical. With itineraries ranging from tours of Scotland's scenic wonders to multiday Scotch malt whisky experiences, this train is the way to see — and be seen — in Scotland.

It may not be a castle itself, but consider this train a castle on wheels that'll take you to a few along the way. With wood-paneled rooms ranging from singles to doubles, plus drawing tables, writing tables and en suite bathrooms, this train is made for comfort.

As for experiences on the train, they're nothing short of incredible, too. Guests can enjoy traditional Scottish foods and whisky in the dining cars while sitting in plush seats alongside tables set with tablecloths and fine china. Even more magical is the spa car, which features a signature ritual involving a Swedish back and leg massage, an abdominal massage and a facial for about $145.

Fares for the Royal Scotsman start around $4,300 per person and sell out fast.

British Pullman

luxury train trips around the world

Afternoon tea is quintessentially British — but imagine enjoying it on a glamorous train restored from its 1920s prime. And don't fret if traditional tea isn't your thing. You can skip it and instead have a glass — OK, several glasses — of Champagne surrounded by tile mosaics as the British countryside rolls by. Both experiences are available on the British Pullman , a train fit for royalty.

This train, which the late Queen Elizabeth II rode herself, specializes in one-off events where guests board for a meal, party or special occasion. In fact, Agatha Christie fans may find the train's regularly scheduled murder mystery lunches a dream come true. Or, for folks interested in Britain's iconic castles and palaces, there are frequent day trips from London to get out and experience those locations in style.

These various journeys on the British Pullman sell out quickly, so be sure to plan your trip well in advance. Anticipate paying around $425 per person.

The World’s 7 Most Luxurious Train Rides

luxury train trips around the world

  • Luxury Travel
  • Types of Travel

There is not much that I love better than hopping on a train heading toward a great destination, even better if there are amazing stops along the way, and plenty of pampering involved when on board. With train travel, it is just as much the journey as the destination that matters. In the itineraries listed below, the journey takes precedence over the destination, as a trip on a luxurious train is like flying first class, only for a few days in a row, plus you get to move about and get out for day trips.

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to travel on the Palace on Wheels (pictured) through northern India with my husband and daughter. We had a great cabin with an en-suite bathroom and a butler dedicated to looking after the three suites in our carriage and who took the opportunity to spoil my daughter rotten. And on day trips, we received preferential treatment everywhere, including being allowed onto the grounds of the Taj Mahal before it opened to the public in the morning.

It was a wonderful week-long journey, and I remember one German couple, who lived in Mexico, and who were on a world circumnavigation by luxury train. They had boarded our train after having just crossed Thailand into Singapore and showed us the most wonderful pictures.

This still remains a dream for me, most likely one that will not happen because however wonderful these journeys are, they also cost a lot more than a normal person’s travel budget will allow, unless for the occasional special treat.

But that is what these luxury train journeys are supposed to be: something to dream about, to aim for, and to plan for an upcoming special treat. So read on and see which train you will board one day.

Musicians playing traditional rajasthani music for passangers of luxury train Palace on Wheels in Jaisalmer, India.

1. Palace On Wheels, Rajasthan, India

While there are a few more luxury train journeys through India now, taking in different parts of the vast country, this one was the first and is still the best known. The Palace on Wheels sets off from Delhi and stops in the Rajasthani cities of Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Agra, and more, with even an early morning tiger safari along the way.

You will see historic sights such as the pink Palace of the Winds and stop for lunch in former palaces of Maharajas, such as the amazing Palace in the Lake in Udaipur, which many will know from James Bond’s Octopussy . You’ll also visit imposing forts such as the towering Amber Fort before you visit the Taj Mahal at the climax of the journey.

Every day brings another jaw-dropping destination, and the only negative for me was that while you have some time on the train for meals or drinks in the bar, I wished that there was a little more time to enjoy the luxuries of the train itself.

Pro Tip : Spend a few days in Delhi before you board the train to get over any jetlag and to adjust to India. India is an assault on all the senses: The crowds, the smells, the sights, the amazing history all take a while to get used to. So book a nice hotel and a few excursions in and around Delhi first to get into the mood.

Venice Simplon Orient Express, Paris To Istanbul

2. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Paris To Istanbul

The Orient Express is synonymous with luxury train travel and going along the old route, which connected Western Europe to the gateway to the Orient in style, is still a journey of a lifetime. The Belmond Venice Simplon-Orient-Express brings back the glamour of the Golden Days of travel, the style of which is often sadly lacking on many modern journeys, however pricey. On this trip, you will set off from Paris’ Gare de l’ Est, and over a 10-day journey enjoy stops in Budapest, Sinaia, Bucharest, Romania, and Bulgaria before reaching Istanbul. On this trip, the train is the main feature, as you will spend days being pampered with superior food, plenty of champagne, and vistas from the windows as you cross the Alps, follow along the Danube, and see the ever-changing countryside Europe has to offer.

Pro Tip : You can also experience the luxury of the Orient Express on shorter trips, such as this one from London to Venice , allowing you to enjoy the French countryside, crossing the Alps and northern Italy, while enjoying the riches of the journey.

Seven Stars train Japan

3. Seven Stars, Kyushu, Japan

The southwestern island of Kyushu is known for its stunning volcanic landscape dotted with national parks and hot springs. The Seven Stars train travels through the landscape with thoughtfully planned stops that include a traditional pottery experience and a beautiful lakeside, and an overnight stay in a traditional Ryokan (Japanese inn), depending on whether you choose a 2-day, 1-night or 4-day, 3-night itinerary .

But it is the train that is the most important player on this trip: Custom-built as the world’s most luxurious sleeper train, the seven carriages gleam with wooden parquet flooring, wood paneling interspersed with intricate artisan fretwork, all dotted with the shiny brass logo of the company, and, yes, the en-suite bathrooms feature not only hand-made porcelain basins and separate showers, but also a so-called singing and dancing Japanese toilet.

When in the restaurant car, all plates, or bento-boxes of food are like a piece of art each time and offer the best of Japanese cuisine.

Pro Tip : The journey starts in Fukuoka, the island’s capital, which you will fly into via Tokyo , so allow for some extra time for a layover.

4. El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo, Spain

This luxurious train trip offers you the chance to tick two great journeys in one: Walk the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain, a hard trek allowing you to think and go back to basics, and then, as a reward, take a luxury train back the same way, taking your time, sitting back and enjoying the scenery, without any of the hardship. The journey is an 8-day, 7-night extravaganza connecting the foodie city of San Sebastian with Santiago de Compostela, allowing you to take in numerous stops, including  Bilbao , along the way.

Pro Tip : To make sure you have some non-crumpled nice clothes left for the train and don’t have to worry about carrying your suitcase while trekking along the Camino, send the luggage ahead .

The famous luxury Blue Train snaking through the Karoo in South Africa, from Pretoria to Cape Town

5. Blue Train And Rovos Rail, South Africa

In South Africa, along the route between Pretoria and Cape Town, you are torn between a choice of two luxury trains traveling down the exact same route: the Blue Train and Rovos Rail . Both tout themselves as the most luxurious in the world — and both are truly opulent, offering the same stops along the way, such as at Kimberley for the mining museum. Both trains feature rich wood-paneled decor, butler service, fine dining, and luxurious cabins. The main difference seems to be that Rovos Rail takes a day longer to reach Cape Town, making it somewhat more expensive. So which one you choose really depends on whether you want to spend longer on a sumptuous train, looking out at the magnificent African landscapes unfolding before you, or whether two nights on a train are enough.

luxury train trips around the world

Pro Tip : Rovos Rail does offer other routes besides the above, including one to Victoria Falls and a 9-day safari spectacular. You have options — if your budget or occasion allows it.

The Ghan in Alice Springs Train Station.

6. The Ghan, Australia

Traveling right across Australia is a worthwhile, but seriously hard, and at times somewhat tedious, undertaking. Unless you hop on a train, that is. The Ghan train takes you from Adelaide in South Australia to Darwin in the Northern Territory, neatly bisecting Australia. A journey of 3-days, 2-nights through the Outback and the Red Centre , with stops in Marla, Alice Springs, and Katherine. Though not quite as luxurious as some of the trains mentioned here, it makes up for it with scenery and the fact that you are crossing an entire country and continent. That said, the Platinum Service pampers you rather well throughout the journey.

Pro Tip : You can also opt for the Ghan Expedition , taking one extra day and night, with more excursions.

Andean Explorer Train travelling through the Andes Peru South America

7. Belmond Andean Explorer, Peru

This is one of the highest train journeys in the world, and one of the most elegant. With only 48 passengers maximum on board the Andean Explorer , and two dining and two bar cars looking after them, it features an interior of understated sophistication and colorful hand-woven cushions dotted throughout. There are four different routes to choose from, all lasting one or two nights, making this still a treat, but a more manageable treat. On board, you will dine in style, drink champagne in the piano bar car, and even have access to a spa carriage while enjoying marvelous views of Peru and the Peruvian Andes. From Cusco to Lake Titicaca, you will see Peru from its best side.

Pro Tip : If, like my husband, you are prone to altitude sickness, a slow train journey is a good way to adjust to the altitude of some 14,000 feet. Also, each cabin is equipped with extra oxygen, should you require a boost. And then, upon arrival, you are ready to go and explore Peru in more detail.

With a luxurious mahogany-panelled dining car and an onboard spa, this is one of the most luxurious trains in the world.

The train only runs between April and October, traversing the Scottish Highlands over five days. There are also special trips scheduled through the year, usually themed around an event such as The Scotch Malt Whisky Tour .

The Trans-Siberian Express has the unique distinction of crossing five countries and eight time zones on its longest itinerary, which is around two weeks. The journey includes stops in many of Russia’s iconic cities and towns.

8. Maharajas’ Express

Few trains boast more prestige than the Maharajas’ Express. It was voted the ”World’s Leading Luxury Train” at the World Travel Awards no less than seven times!

Four routes are offered, all departing from Delhi. All four routes include an excursion to the iconic Taj Mahal.

Every inch of this train reflects the opulence and splendor of India’s most refined decor and cuisine. The restaurants, lounge bar, suites, and even the junior rooms are exquisitely serviced and maintained.

The Deluxe Cabins are the entry level accommodation measuring 112 square feet, and each have a private bathroom, wardrobe, safe, folding writing table, television, direct dial telephone and Wi-Fi. The Junior Suites are a bit larger at 150 square feet.

The Presidential Suite has a living room, two bathrooms including one with a bathtub and two bedrooms. This suite comes with a personal valet available 24/7 and private vehicles for local excursions at each destination.

9. The Pride of Africa (Rovos Rail)

Africa is truly a place you’ll want to experience with a sense of luxury. Rovos Rail offers several options for its luxury train journeys, ranging from two to 15 days.

The Pride of Africa travels cross-border, visiting Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Zambia on its routes.

10. Rocky Mountaineer

This train has magnificent glass-dome observation carriages, which offer exhilarating views of the beautiful Canadian Rockies. There are also open-air observation carriages for the complete experience.

From Vancouver, the train takes one of four routes to Banff, Jasper, or Denver, each with its thematic appeal.

11. Seven Stars Kyushu

Everything on the Kyushu seems to be a work of art. Famously, they claim that even the washbasins on board are rare, limited-edition models. The wood-themed decor is immaculate, down to the finest detail, in typical proud Japanese artistic fashion.

Even the onboard cuisine is sourced from Kyushu’s surrounding landscape. Four-day and two-day journeys depart from Fukuoka and traverse Kyushu Island .

Why not combine your journey with a trip to Oita , also on Kyushu island. This scenic district has some beautiful temples and gardens.

12. South Africa Blue Train

Traveling from Pretoria in the northeast to Cape Town in the southwest of South Africa doesn’t get any more indulgent. It’s the best way to see South Africa’s spectacular scenery as you enjoy butler service, world-class food, and superb wines.

Several of the compartments have full baths, which is a must in the light of the African daytime. The two-day Blue Train is widely recognized as one of the world’s finest shorter luxury train experiences.

13. Belmond Andean Explorer

The Andean Explorer travels one of the highest train routes in the world, with its tracks running across the Andes Mountains in Peru. A great way to see South America, it also offers intriguing day excursions along the way, with comfortable cabin accommodations for your evening.

The journey starts at the ancient Incan city of Cusco, passing Lake Titicaca in Puno, and finishing at Arequipa. The Belmond Andean Explorer is not currently operating.

14. Hiram Bingham

This luxury train travels between Cusco and Machu Picchu. Featuring 1920s inspired carriages with wood panelling and brass details, the Belmond Hiram Bingham is the height of Peruvian hospitality.

Named after the American explorer who discovered Machu Picchu, the train route is 57 miles long. There are no sleeping carriages on the Hiram Bingham train, as the journey is short. However, you’ll want to spend all your time enjoying the Peruvian cuisine and local musicians playing in the Bar Car .

15. Golden Eagle Danube Express

The Golden Eagle Danube Express is one of the most luxurious ways to travel through Central Europe. This train service is run by Golden Eagle Luxury Trains, a British company. They have a team onboard including tour managers, chefs, service staff, and Trans-European Express drivers.

Destinations visited may include Vienna, Salzburg, Cesky Krumlov, Krakow, Lviv, Brasov, Sighisoara, Belgrade, and more. The train has sleeper cabins, a lounge car, dining cars, and an observation car. The cabins are relatively spacious and equipped with private en-suite facilities.

Fares are quite expensive, starting at around $5,000+ per person for a 7-day trip depending on the itinerary and cabin type. But the price includes touring, most meals, drinks, and transfers.

Palace on Wheels

We had previously included The Royal Rajasthan On Wheels (better known as the Palace on Wheels) on our list of luxury train journeys, due to their focus on space. Each carriage only has three cabins, making its passenger quarters more spacious.

The visual impact of the decor when the train first launched was impressive – lush carpeting, drapery and velvet bed clothes await you in your cabin. There’s also a library, bar and a Rejuvenation Spa Car. Two restaurant cars serve foods and drinks: Maharaja and Maharani.

However, we have sadly received reports that the train is not properly maintained. Let’s hope that standards on board this vintage train improve quickly!

5 Of The Most Luxurious Trains Around The World

I n the past, trains were the fastest way to travel on land , especially long distances. But when automobiles and airplanes came about, boarding a train to travel to the other end of the country became impractical. After all, you'll be on the rails for multiple days, and living in a cramped space for such a duration doesn't sound very appealing. However, amidst the rise in the popularity of air travel, people eventually found their way back to the railways — this time, for leisure purposes.

Modern luxury trains are designed not for transportation but for tourism. They offer travelers an unhurried way of touring the region while enjoying the scenic route. These luxury trains are often comparable to upscale hotels as they come complete with dining areas, lounges, and accommodations. Today, luxury trains can be found in many parts of the world. Here are five luxurious trains you can check out for your next trip.

Royal Canadian Pacific, Canada

The Royal Canadian Pacific is a vintage luxury train with a long and storied history. Its carriages date back to 1916, during which they served as convenient transportation linking Canada's east and west coasts. The train, consisting of 10 1920s business cars and two old locomotives , carried numerous public figures since its inception, including King George VI, Princess Elizabeth, U.S. Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. However, in 2000, several decades later, the carriages were converted into the luxury tour train it is today.

Speaking of tours, there are three excursions available for booking. The Royal Canadian Rockies Experience lasts five days and four nights, taking passengers from Alberta to British Columbia before returning to Alberta. A slightly shorter option is the Royal Pacific Express, a four-day, three-night journey beginning in Alberta and ending in Vancouver. The Royal Prairie Express excursion takes just as long but follows the reverse route (Vancouver to Alberta).

Design-wise, the Royal Canadian Pacific features Russian-imported furniture and fittings that give the interiors an elegant vintage look. However, the amenities are tailored to provide passengers with a modern and comfortable onboard experience. There's a fine dining car, a rear-end observation car with a small open-air deck, and lounge areas in every sleeper car. While boasting a classic style, the accommodations are fitted with conveniences, such as an in-room safe, private bathroom with shower, wardrobe, and internal telephone that you can use for calling room service.

Andean Explorer, Peru

Operated by hospitality and leisure company Belmond, the Andean Explorer holds the title of South America's first luxury sleeper train. It traverses one of the world's highest railways, connecting the cities of Arequipa, Puno, and Cusco in rural Peru. This train is designed with a focus on contemporary luxury and comes complete with 16 carriages. There's a lounge car providing cocktails and piano music, an observation bar car featuring an open-air deck connected to an indoor bar, a spa car offering different massages and therapies, and two restaurant cars serving dishes made with local ingredients.

The rest of the carriages are dedicated to the accommodations. You can find 35 cabins on the Andean Explorer, all equipped with amenities like an in-room bathroom with washbasin and shower, air conditioning, wardrobe, 220V power outlets, and 24/7 call buttons. Since the train route runs up the mountain, there are also dedicated oxygen tanks and masks inside each room, plus an onboard medical assistant should you have respiratory troubles during the trip. You can pick from three cabin types on the train: bunk bed, twin bed, or suite. They range from as small as 5.5 square meters to as spacious as 13.1 square meters.

The Andean Explorer departs every Tuesday and Thursday from Cusco, every Wednesday and Sunday from Puno, and every Saturday from Arequipa. It pauses operations for a month every February.

Seven Stars In Kyushu Luxury Sleeper Train, Japan

In operation since 2013, Seven Stars in Kyushu Luxury Sleeper Train takes passengers across the seven prefectures in Japan's southern island of Kyushu. The train's name is a nod not only to these seven prefectures but also to the seven main draws of the island (nature, hot springs, food, trains, humanity, history and culture, and the so-called "power spots").

Seven Stars in Kyushu is also referred to as such because it features only seven carriages that provide passengers with a more intimate and exclusive feel. In the first car, you can find the dining hall with wide windows for enjoying the passing countryside. This space is adorned with a bar and piano. Then, there's the salon room in the second carriage, where you can lounge while pouring yourself a drink. Tucked away in this second carriage is also a small enclosed tea room furnished to look like a Japanese teahouse. Following the salon car is a carriage for the second bar and the gallery shop featuring curated souvenir items from Kyushu, such as handicrafts, jewelry, and various home goods.

The remaining cars contain the train's lodging areas, with Car 7 housing the only two deluxe suites. There are 10 guest cabins onboard, accommodating a maximum of 20 passengers. The rooms are thoughtfully designed with a modern Japanese aesthetic in mind and come complete with standard amenities, including air conditioning, shower, and toilet.

Le Grand Tour, France

Organized by the popular show park Puy du Fou, the French train Le Grand Tour is a massive luxury train tour around some of France's major attractions. It covers roughly 4,000 kilometers and spans six days and five nights. The tour starts in Paris, stops at notable locations like Reims, Annecy, and Avignon, and concludes at Puy du Fou. But apart from the immersive experiences in French arts, cuisine, and craftsmanship, another highlight of the tour is the train itself. The carriages follow a Belle Époque design with shades of blue and red adorning the interior. Amenities onboard include a restaurant serving French dishes prepared by a Michelin-starred chef and a bar offering passengers a hangout spot for taking in the picturesque view.

As for the accommodations, there are three configurations to pick from. You have the 10-square meter cabins for at most two passengers, the 15-square meter cabin suites for one to three passengers, and the 25-square meter adjoining suite (made up of a cabin connected to a suite) to provide more space for two to five travelers. Passengers also have the option to book a single private carriage or the whole train. Whatever your configuration, all the rooms feature an en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, modular lounge, wardrobe, Wi-Fi, and a personal steward to tend to your needs. There are only 18 cabins available onboard, housing a total of 36 passengers.

Rovos Rail, Africa

Rovos Rail is one of Africa's most distinguished luxury train services, boasting over three decades of operation. It offers excursions through several countries, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The excursions vary from as short as 800 kilometers to as long as 5,530 kilometers and take anything between two and 15 nights. Although made up of rebuilt trains, Rovos Rail showcases a vintage and classic aesthetic in its carriages. The interiors feature polished wood paneling and plush furnishings with intricate patterns.

In terms of onboard amenities, the train is complete with sleeper coaches and living spaces. The sleeper coaches are available in three configurations: Pullman, Deluxe, and Royal, with the Royal suite being the largest at sixteen square meters. Each suite has a bathroom, air conditioning, safes, tea facilities, and cupboards. The Royal and Deluxe suites also include a separate lounge area with a bar fridge for added comfort.

The living spaces, on the other hand, come in several carriage types. A 32-seat observation car features an open-air balcony, bar, and panoramic windows. Connected to the observation car is the Club Car area, where passengers can smoke and watch the passing scenery. You can also find a lounge car, which is slightly smaller with only about 26 seats but features a gift shop with unique merchandise and souvenirs. The dining cars are the most spacious on the train, accommodating roughly 42 passengers.
