My favorite quote is 20 years from now. How true that is 20 years I will probably in a old folks home. Looking back I can see all the wonderful things I did. Thanks for all you do.

I love that quote too! Time is the most precious thing we have. Glad you live by it and it’s so meaningful!

Thanks so much Russell!

Truly, great cruise travel quotes! I have really saved most of them. Some of my favorites are: 1) “I wanted freedom, open air and adventure. I found it on the sea.” Where else, you could get the freedom, open air, and lots of adventure in the form of diving, fishing, and encounters with sea animals. 2) Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. Life should be worth telling stories to the next generation. And the only way to do so is cruise traveling.

Hi Pranita,

I love your interpretations of these quotes! Glad to know that you enjoyed this post and the cruise travel quotes.

Inspirational Cruise Ship Quotes: Embracing the Power of the Sea

Set sail and embrace life’s journeys.

Do you ever find yourself yearning for adventure? Dreaming of exploring new horizons and leaving behind the familiar shores? Well, my friend, it’s time to harness inspiration from powerful cruise ship quotes that remind us to embrace life’s journeys, both on land and at sea.

As Joseph Conrad once said, “A man’s real possession is his memory. In nothing else is he rich, in nothing else is he poor.” These words carry a profound truth – our memories are priceless treasures that we collect along our journey through life. And what better way to create unforgettable memories than by embarking on a cruise ship?

Picture this: you’re standing on the deck of a majestic vessel, feeling the gentle breeze caress your face as you gaze out into the vast expanse of the high seas. It’s in moments like these that ships symbolize resilience, exploration, and personal growth. They become a metaphor for our own voyage through life.

A Journey Beyond Fear

Fear often holds us back from embracing change or venturing into uncharted territories. But as Ralph Waldo Emerson wisely stated, “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Let these inspiring words echo in your mind as you set sail towards new horizons.

The unknown can be intimidating, but it also holds tremendous potential for growth and self-discovery. Just like a ship bravely navigating uncharted waters, we too must have the courage to step outside our comfort zones. As Mark Twain once said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”

So why not cast off those fears that weigh heavy on your heart? Embrace change with open arms and set sail towards the life you’ve always dreamed of. As you embark on your cruise ship adventure, let these inspirational quotes about cruise ships ignite your passion for exploration and the boundless possibilities that lie beyond the shore.

Wanderlust and Adventure Await

The allure of a cruise ship lies not only in its luxurious amenities or picturesque destinations but also in the sense of wanderlust it evokes. It beckons us to leave behind the monotony of everyday life and embark on an exhilarating journey filled with excitement, new experiences, and breathtaking sights.

As you step aboard, allow yourself to be swept away by the vastness of the ocean and the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Let go of your worries, immerse yourself in the beauty around you, and open your mind and soul to new adventures.

In the words of Walt Disney, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” So why not make this dream a reality? Let these cruise ship quotes inspire you to embrace the unknown, awaken your sense of adventure, and set sail towards a world full of wonder.

Reconnecting with Nature and Finding Harmony Within

When you embark on a cruise adventure, you leave behind the noise and distractions of modern life and enter into a world where simplicity reigns supreme. The sound of waves crashing against the hull becomes your symphony, soothing your soul as you navigate through vast expanses of water.

As you gaze out at endless horizons and feel the wind in your hair, you can’t help but be captivated by nature’s beauty. The sunsets paint vibrant colors across the sky, reflecting off calm waters like strokes from an artist’s brush. It’s in these moments that you realize the true meaning of freedom and find harmony within yourself.

A Transformative Experience: Reflection and Self-Discovery

Sailing not only allows you to disconnect from the chaos of everyday life but also offers a transformative experience that can lead to self-discovery. The open sea becomes a canvas for introspection, inviting you to reflect on your life’s journey and contemplate the path ahead.

As the wind fills the sails, propelling you forward, you may find yourself contemplating life’s deeper questions. What are your dreams and aspirations? What truly matters to you? The vastness of the ocean provides a sense of perspective, reminding us of our place in the world and encouraging personal growth.

Immerse Yourself in Serene Quotes

Let these serene quotes about sailing wash over you like gentle waves:

  • “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.”
  • “The cure for anything is salt water — sweat, tears or the sea.”
  • “Land was created to provide a place for boats to visit.”

Allow these words to transport you mentally as well as physically. Picture yourself aboard a sailboat, feeling the wind against your face, listening to the rhythmic sound of water lapping against the hull. Let go of stress and worries as you embrace the serenity that comes with being out on open waters.

Discovering Freedom through Water Travel

Sailing represents freedom in its purest form. When we set sail, we leave behind limitations and constraints, embracing an adventure where every day brings new discoveries. Cruise vacations offer an escape from our usual routines and allow us to explore different lands while enjoying all the comforts onboard.

Imagine waking up each morning with endless possibilities before you. Will it be snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs or exploring charming port towns? The choice is yours as you chart your course through crystal-clear waters towards destinations unknown.

Finding Inspiration in Nature’s Elements

Sailing is a dance between wind and water, where the sails harness the power of nature to propel you forward. exploration cruise quotes

Exploration Cruise Quotes

Break free from the familiar and venture into the unknown with these inspiring quotes about exploration. Let go of fear and embrace the thrill of discovering new horizons as you read these motivational words. Find inspiration to step out of your comfort zone and embark on an adventure that will transform your life forever. Allow yourself to be guided by these powerful quotes as you set sail towards uncharted territories, leaving behind the safety of the shore. Discover how these exploration-themed quotes can ignite a sense of curiosity and awaken your inner explorer.

Explore the Unknown

“Exploration is really the essence of human spirit.” – Frank Borman

There’s something truly magical about venturing into uncharted territory. It’s in our nature to seek out new experiences, to push boundaries, and to discover what lies beyond our sight. Zora Neale Hurston once said, “Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.” These words remind us that exploration is not just about physical journeys; it’s also about delving deep into our own curiosities, uncovering hidden truths, and expanding our knowledge.

As we set sail on this journey of exploration, it’s important to remember that we are not alone in our quest for discovery. Countless individuals throughout history have embarked on daring expeditions in search of new lands, treasures, and knowledge. Their stories serve as a reminder that possibilities lie beyond what we can currently see or imagine.

Embracing Fearlessness

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” – Mark Twain

Fear often acts as an anchor holding us back from embracing new opportunities. However, true explorers understand that growth only happens when we let go of fear and take bold leaps into the unknown. As Neale Hurston wisely stated, “There are years that ask questions and years that answer.” By stepping out of our comfort zones, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities and allow ourselves to grow in ways we never thought possible.

Consider this: when explorers set sail, they leave behind the safety of the shore. They face uncertainty, rough waters, and unpredictable challenges. Yet, it is precisely because of these risks that their journeys become transformative. Similarly, in our own lives, it is when we let go of the familiar and embrace the unknown that we truly discover who we are and what we are capable of achieving.

Igniting Curiosity

“The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” – Oprah Winfrey

Exploration ignites a sense of curiosity within us. It awakens our inner explorer and encourages us to question everything around us. As we embark on new adventures, these exploration-themed quotes act as beacons guiding us towards uncharted territories where endless possibilities await.

Imagine standing at the edge of a vast ocean with nothing but open water stretching out before you. The horizon disappears into the distance, leaving you with a sense of wonder and anticipation. This feeling is what drives explorers throughout history to set sail into the great unknown. It’s what compels us to seek out new experiences and push beyond our limits.

So, as you read these quotes about exploration, let them fuel your curiosity. Let them inspire you to step outside your comfort zone and embrace the thrill of discovering new horizons. Remember that life is an adventure waiting to be explored; don’t let fear or complacency hold you back from experiencing its full potential.

What fabulous quotes to inspire wanderlust! I was totally thinking about doing a post one day of quotes for booklovers. Just not sure what images I would use. Anyway…there are so many favorite ones here. I love that you quoted The Little Mermaid and I love the Hellen Keller quotes so much. And Louisa May Alcott! Both she and Jane Austen inspire me. I completely agree with 25 & 28. I’m not a LOTR fan but really love that Tolkien quote not just for travel but life too. And aww Moana and yay for vitamin Sea! I may go on a cruise one day all because of you. Now, do you know of any books set on a cruise or involve cruising? I know of two I’ve read so far. I may have read others but don’t remember!

Lauren – Thanks! You should read a book. Honestly, I have not read any books that are on cruise ships. Please do tell.

Top Cruise Ship and Travel Quotes

Here is a collection of some famous cruise travel quotes along with their meaning. Loaded with wisdom, these inspirational cruise quotes will make you ponder over the experiences of sailors and mariners as they take on long voyages. At the same time, these cruise quotations will fire your yearnings for taking on a cruise journey. Enjoy these quotes about cruising and you'll surely start planning for your next cruise destination.

"The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever."

This famous quote is by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, a French naval officer, who was also a renowned ecologist, filmmaker, author, and researcher. His deep love for all forms of life in water is beautifully illustrated in this quote. He says, that once you start exploring life in the sea, you will be so enchanted that your curiosity to know more about the sea will be deeply enhanced. You will fall in love with life in the ocean and would want to spend your life exploring it.

"Any fool can carry on, but a wise man knows how to shorten sail in time."

These words of wisdom are by Joseph Conrad, a famous Polish-born English novelist, who also once worked as a Master Mariner for the British Navy. The writer explains that sails are great for sailing. However, in the face of a storm, these sails can be dangerous if not shortened prior to the wind hit. A wise captain knows how to manage a ship and avoid any disaster. In life too, we need to be watchful of storms (difficult situations) brewing around us so we can manage situations with ease and are not caught off guard. Stay humble, be observant, and pay attention to your intuitions, is the underlying message of this quote.

"The journey, not the arrival matters."

This beautiful quote by TS Elliot will trigger your wanderlust and offer you a whole new dimension about a journey. For most travelers, a journey is about reaching the destination as soon as possible. The travel part of the journey is tedious and burdensome. With this wisdom-packed quote, the writer wishes to draw our attention to the experience of the journey. When we only think about the destination, we forget to relish the experiences that await us during the journey; the food we can taste, new acquaintances we can meet, and adventure that we may experience. The writer wants to convey that we must look forward to enjoying traveling, the moment we step out of the home. This will keep us more relaxed and arrive at the destination full of energy and enthusiasm.

"The goal is not to sail the boat, but rather to help the boat sail herself."

This thoughtful quote is by John Rousmaniere, the famous American writer who has penned over 30 books on sailing and yachting history. The writer here wants to emphasize on the importance of empowering people. Pushing and handholding cannot lead one far. However, when people, like boats, are empowered, they can take on longer and more successful journeys.

"Sailing is just the bottom line, like adding up the score in bridge. My real interest is in the tremendous game of life."

"It isn't that life ashore is distasteful to me. But life at sea is better."

Sir Francis Drake portrays his deep love for sea through this very famous quote. These beautifully crafted words are oft-repeated by cruise lovers to make people understand their passion for the sea as they go on booking voyages after voyages.

"There is nothing more enticing, disenchanting, and enslaving than the life at sea."

This celebrated quote is from Joseph Conrad's famous novel, Typhoon. Here Conrad discusses the intensity of passion that the mariners experience while living a life at sea. For them, life at sea is exciting and intoxicating.

"A ship in port is safe, but that's not what ships are built for."

This quote was coined by John A Shedd in his book, Salt from My Attic. This simple to understand quote urges people to do the things that are close to their heart and not just sit and do nothing about their dreams and aspirations. We need to come out of our comfort zone, broaden our horizon and take the needed risk to achieve our goals. We may fail, but at least we will have the satisfaction of having tried. And, in the process of our attempt, we would have learned valuable lessons.

"All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware."

This quote is by the famous Jewish philosopher, Martin Buber. This lucid quote tries to impress upon our minds that when taking a journey we should keep our minds open for the unexpected. In spite of your best planning, unexpected things are waiting to unfold and unravel. We should cherish these "secret" destinations and events and accept them as they come.

"He that will not sail till all dangers are over must never put to sea."

This famous line by Thomas Fuller is a guideline for those planning to go on a sea voyage. It means that people who are not ready to accept the risks involved in sailing should not embark on a sea journey out of their own volition.

These cruise quotations will fuel your excitement to embark on a cruise that you can cruise online booking from shorter cruises to world cruises.

Paul Heller has been a lifelong avid traveler and language learner and teacher, Even as a child, he told Santa Claus that he wanted to visit all the children worldwide. At seven years old, Paul wanted to retire to Mexico. At eight, he memorized the name, capital, location, and some facts about every country worldwide. At twelve, he found a book "Lonely Planet: Southeast Asia on a Shoestring" and started developing his own itinerary for a future round-the-world trip. He remained obsessed with travel; after getting a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and working as an administrator, He spent his vacations going to different countries around the globe studying language, touring, and volunteering. In 1994, he quit his job and lived in Russia as a volunteer English instructor. He discovered that he loved teaching languages. In 2004, he decided to make a living out of his travels and founded a community of people who love to travel just like him. He developed 5 three-hour classes about living and traveling long-term worldwide which he taught in over 50 adult education programs throughout the US. After his parents passed, he realized his dream of traveling around the world; cruising and touring some of the most remote places like the North Atlantic, Patagonia, and Oceania; and learning new languages (he knows Spanish, Italian, French, and Russian). Paul encourages everyone to learn foreign languages. He knows that it can be frustrating and slow but that anyone can learn a language if they put in the work and, most importantly, learning a language is well worth the time and effort because it opens up a whole new set of people, ideas, and cultures. He is currently spending the next chapter of his life in Mérida, México. He is excited about using this blog and his classes and workshops to inspire and equip fellow Fifty Plus Nomads with the language, cultural, and psychological skills necessary to be successful and happy long-term travelers and expats over 50.

Oklahoma family socked with $12K in fees, extra expenses after getting left behind on Norwegian cruise

Cruise line says it will reimburse family after mistake by local tour operator led to them missing scheduled departure.

A family trip turned into a harrowing ordeal for an Oklahoma family who say they were left stranded in Alaska during a cruise.

Cailyn Gault was traveling with her husband, Josh, from Tulsa, along with 16 family members from three states, to Alaska for a family reunion aboard Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) when a stop in Ketchikan turned sour.

Nine of the family members ventured off the ship for an excursion to a lumberjack show, but they were unable to get back on their bus back to port in time to make the ship’s departure.

After the show was finished, buses were waiting outside to ferry passengers back to the ship, but Cailyn Gault said her group was left behind when non-ticketed passengers from another cruise ship were given their seats on the dedicated excursion bus back to the port. The short trip was sponsored by NCL, she said.

"We reached out to the Port Authority to let them know we were left behind by the excursion operator, and they sent a van to retrieve all nine of us at the designated pickup location, where we had been waiting since the last full bus left," Gault said. "Just minutes from port, our driver got a call that the ship refused to wait and pulled the gangway."

When they got back to the docks, they watched helplessly as the 1,100-foot-long Norwegian Encore sailed away. Their passports, medication and clothes were all aboard the vessel that can carry about 4,000 passengers . One of the children in their party, Gault said, had special needs and needed medication.

Gault said the cruise line also issued a $971 fine per person for missing the ship, amounting to nearly $9,000. The fee stems from a federal law that states they must visit a foreign port before returning to the U.S. But Gault said they were unable to follow the law and catch up with the vessel at its next port of call in Canada as their passports were on the ship.

The family instead had to make their way home to Tulsa from Alaska, which took them days with stops in different cities on top of stress and worry, all on their own dime.

They had to find last-minute lodgings and even had to stay overnight in an airport.

Gault says the family racked up an additional $12,000 in expenses – including for flights and accommodations – bringing the total cost of being left behind to around $21,000. This is on top of the initial $30,000 they family spent on the trip, Gault said.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE WORKER ARRESTED IN ALASKA FOR ALLEGEDLY STABBING 3 PEOPLE ONBOARD: REPORT

"We want to make sure policies and procedures are put in place by Norwegian and their sponsored excursion operators, so this never happens to another family," Gault said. "We are beat up and down right now but home and safe now. How many times are they going to do this to people before someone is seriously injured or dies?"

Gaut added that the NCL representatives on the phone to the family were all very nice and told them to keep the receipts.

"We could tell everyone really wanted to help, they just didn’t know what to do," Gaut said.

Gault said that while they are thankful to be home, though they are all battling COVID-19 , her mother is taking what happened during the trip even harder.

"My mother is still in complete distress, can’t eat, sleep, having night terrors, etc. Her doctor saw her first thing this morning, and she is under medical care now," Gault said.

NCL tells FOX Business that the mishap was due to a mistake by a local tour operator.

"When the guests did not return to the ship at the published time, we attempted to contact them but were unable to reach them," an NCL statement reads, in part.

"As such, we alerted the local port agent in Ketchikan and requested that they assist the family with booking a hotel for the night. As the guests would be unable to downline in the next port of call, Victoria, British Columbia, the port agent also helped the guests with securing flights to Seattle the following day, July 13."

NCL says it will reimburse the family for all the out-of-pocket expenses they incurred over the two days as a result of missing the ship, including meals and accommodations. Reimbursements will be processed once receipts for these expenses are provided, the company said.

The cruise line is also in the process of refunding the family for the $9,000 fee imposed by Border Patrol and said the nine will be receiving a prorated refund for the two cruise days they missed.

NCL will provide each of the nine guests with a 20% discount on a cruise fare on their next voyage.

Gault’s 78-year-old mother had allegedly encountered issues with NCL in the past.

"In a crazy twist of fate, my sweet mother was also a passenger on the Norwegian Dawn when it left eight people in [the central African island nation] São Tomé [and Príncipe] back in March. We are experienced travelers, and this was beyond overwhelming and distressing," Gault said.

"With everyone’s work schedules, we likely won’t ever be able to do it again. We have been planning this trip for over a year, dropped a ton of money, and this is how we were treated, through no fault of our own."

Traveling with Pets & Service Animals

Cdc yellow book 2024.

Author(s): Emily Pieracci, Kendra Stauffer

International air and cruise travel with pets require advance planning. Travelers taking a companion or service animal to a foreign country must meet the entry requirements of that country and follow transportation guidelines of the airline or cruise company. Additionally, upon reentering the United States, pets that traveled abroad are subject to the same import requirements as animals that never lived in the United States (see Sec. 4, Ch. 9, Bringing Animals & Animal Products into the United States ).

See general information about traveling with a pet . For destination country requirements, travelers should contact the country’s embassy in Washington, DC, or the nearest consulate. The International Air Transportation Association also lists the requirements for pets to enter countries . Airline and cruise companies are another resource for travelers; most have webpages dedicated to traveling with pets.

Traveling With Pets Outside the United States

People planning to travel outside the United States with a pet should contact their local veterinarian well in advance of departure for assistance with completing all necessary paperwork and ensuring animal health and medical requirements are met. Depending on the destination country, pets might be required to have updated vaccinations and parasite treatments, International Standards Organization–compatible microchips implanted, and serologic tests prior to travel. Some countries require a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) test for pets prior to importation.

Completing the stringent testing and permit requirements for some countries (e.g., Australia) can take up to 6 months. People who plan to transport animals should consider the animals’ species (e.g., cat, dog); mode of travel (e.g., airplane, cruise ship); season of travel (some carriers will not transport animals during the hottest or coldest parts of the year); and vaccination and testing requirements of the destination country and of transiting countries, if applicable. Transportation carriers might have additional requirements (e.g., breed restrictions for pets traveling in cargo, health certificates), so travelers intending to take pets outside the United States should contact air and cruise lines for information as soon as they are aware of their travel plans.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) lists international export regulations for pets . Pet owners are responsible for making sure requirements of the destination country are met. USDA APHIS often is required to endorse a health certificate prior to an animal leaving the United States; certificates must be accurate, complete, and legible. Failure to meet destination country requirements can cause problems gaining certificate endorsement or difficulties upon arrival in the destination country (e.g., animal quarantine or retesting).

Travelers should be aware that long flights can be hard on pets, particularly older animals, animals with chronic health conditions, very young animals, and short-nosed breeds (e.g., Persian cats, English bulldogs) that can be predisposed to respiratory stress. The US Department of Transportation offers tips for traveling with animals by plane .

Traveling With Service Animals Outside the United States

The Department of Justice (DOJ) Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as any dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability, including an intellectual, mental, physical, psychiatric, or sensory disability. DOJ does not recognize emotional support animals as service animals, and airline carriers are not required to recognize emotional support animals as service animals.

Air Travel with Service Animals

The cabins of most commercial airplanes are highly confined spaces; passengers are seated in close quarters with limited opportunities to separate passengers from nearby disturbances. Animals on airplanes can pose a risk to the health, safety, and well-being of passengers and crew, and could disturb the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft. Accommodation of passengers traveling with service animals onboard a commercial airplane must be balanced against these concerns.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2018 developed minimum standards for service animals. Airline carriers can require passengers traveling with a service animal to document whether that animal has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks to assist the function of the passenger with a physical or mental disability; has been trained to behave in public; is in good health; and has the ability either not to relieve itself on a long (>8 hours) flight or to do so in a sanitary manner.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) provides 2 forms to document a service animal’s behavior, training, and health: Service Animal Air Transportation Form  [PDF] and Service Animal Relief Attestation Form for Flight Segments Eight Hours or Longer  [PDF].

In addition to the requirements already mentioned, airlines might require health certificates and vaccination records. Although airline carriers cannot restrict service dogs based solely on the breed or generalized type of dog, they might limit the number of service animals traveling with a single passenger with a disability, or require service animals be harnessed, leashed, or tethered unless the device interferes with the service animal’s work or the passenger’s disability prevents use of these devices; in which case, the carrier must permit the passenger to use signal, voice, or other effective means to maintain control of the service animal.

Cruise Ship Travel with Service Animals

Travelers should contact the cruise company they will be traveling with to learn more about each company’s service animal policy. Some cruise lines are unable to accommodate animals onboard. Pets, service dogs in training, and emotional support dogs might not be allowed. People traveling aboard a ship with a service dog should consider rules or requirements at ports of call. For instance, many ports of call have strict entry requirements for animals. Travelers with service animals should visit the USDA’s pet travel website or their service animal’s veterinarian to determine each destination country’s policy regarding admission of service animals. Some locations do not recognize 3-year rabies vaccines, and annual vaccination might be required; consult with the service animal’s veterinarian for more information.

Some locations require that service animals receive parasite treatment prior to arrival, and this information should be included in the service animal’s health records. Some locations require that service animals travel with documentation (e.g., an import license), regardless of whether the service animal will disembark the ship. Check with the cruise company or country of destination for details.

Some locations have breed restrictions per the country’s dog ordinances. Restricted-breed service animals might not be allowed to board the ship due to the destination country’s laws. Travelers should check with the cruise line and country of destination for more information.

Travelers should hand-carry (i.e., not pack in baggage) all of their animals’ required documents, including vaccination records. Service animals traveling without proper documentation might not be permitted to board the ship at embarkation.

Reentering the United States With a Pet or Service Animal

Once a pet or service animal leaves the United States, it must meet all entry requirements to reenter, even if the animal has lived in the United States previously (see Sec. 4, Ch. 9, Bringing Animals & Animal Products into the United States  and CDC's Bringing an Animal into the United States webpage).

Hello from Port Canaveral in Orlando and from a preview sailing to the Bahamas on a whole new genre of ship that offers the ultimate short-break cruise.

Utopia of the Seas cost more than £1billion ($1.3billion) to build and is Royal Caribbean’s 28th vessel. It’s also the first ship from the cruise line to specifically sail three and four-night voyages to the Caribbean.

The 18-deck, 5,700-passenger Utopia is designed to deliver a party-style high-octane getaway. A video I made showing the highlights of my time on board starts on the top deck, where a lot of the action is. Here, there are five pools, a zip line, an aqua park, a surf simulator and more.

Utopia is the second-biggest cruise ship in the world, after Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, which is great news for your step count – it takes 3.5 minutes to walk from one end of the ship to the other and most days see you walking around 20,000 steps just heading from cabin to pool to dining room and so on.

I clocked up a few walking to perhaps the scariest thing of all on top deck, the Ultimate Abyss, which at 259ft (79m) is the longest dry slide at sea. My hands turned clammy and heart rate quickened just at the thought of giving it a go. How was it? Terrifying – it made me so dizzy that I struggled to stand up at the end.

But if watery slides are more your thing, Utopia has you covered, with three adrenaline-fueled splashy rides – I give the yellow one a try.

My footage then moves indoors, first to the Solarium and then to a whole new style of accommodation named after it called the ‘Solarium Suite’. The panorama from here is exceptional, offering the exact same 270-degree view that the captain has from the bridge.

Like most other Royal Caribbean ships, Utopia has a boardwalk with a carousel and ‘Central Park’ – an al fresco internal garden with 12,000 plants.

But new to Utopia is a tiki bar called Pesky Parrot, which specialises in fruit-based cocktails and frozen drinks.

The ‘Painchiller’ is a great name for a cocktail and is one of its signature tipples, packed with Bacardi rum, pina colada mix and blood orange sour.

How does it taste? Fabulous and the bonus is that it cures all aches and pains! Also new is the Bell and Barley pub and Spare Tire, a food truck serving pulled pork sandwiches.

Innovation in entertainment is what Royal Caribbean does best. Like most other ships in the fleet, Utopia has an aqua theatre that stages daredevil dive shows.

But Utopia has gone one step further: it’s the only cruise ship in the world to have a train and a train station on board.

It’s called the Royal Railway and every ride comes with a meal. Mine was a Wild West journey with a themed dinner.

UTOPIA OF THE SEAS - FAST FACTS

18 decks in total - 16 guest decks

2,834 bedrooms

5,668 guest capacity

Crew - 2,290

Length - 1,188ft (362m). It takes around three and a half minutes to walk from the bow to the stern

Starter was a plate of ‘Fart & Dart beans’, which looked funny on the menu but were actually delicious. Of course, it’s not a real train - that would be wilder than the Wild West - but the virtual reality ride did a very good job of feeling authentic, with sound effects, movements and all. There was even an in-carriage hold-up.

Every cruise on Utopia, be it the three or four-day voyage, will stop at Coco Cay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas.

And because all cruises are short and begin and end in Port Canaveral, Florida, it makes sense to spend a couple of days at nearby Orlando pre or post-cruise to extend your stay. That’s what I did, spending time at Universal’s theme parks before heading to Wekiwa Springs State Park where there are hiking trails and natural cool springs – this is a lovely, undiscovered spot that offers a refreshing alternative to Orlando’s roller coasters.

Back on board, Utopia songstress Meghan Trainor has been named the ship’s godmother, and the footage finishes by showing her performing an exclusive, celebratory concert, including the hit song ‘All about that Bass’.

And so, a whole new era of the ultimate weekend cruise is born.

Are three or four nights long enough to experience the whole ship? Absolutely not - you’ll have to come back another time for more.

Utopia will be offering three and four-night round-trip sailings departing Fridays and Mondays from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas. Further information: www.royalcaribbean.com and www.visitorlando.com/gb .

Inside the world's second-biggest cruise ship - Utopia of the Seas

Another 'largest cruise' sets sail: Utopia of the Seas offers short, party-packed trips

Portrait of Nathan Diller

  • Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Utopia of the Seas, launched on Friday with short three-and-four-night sailings.
  • The ship will visit Royal Caribbean's private island destination in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay, and Nassau.
  • Utopia features several new venues, including Pesky Parrot, a Caribbean take on a tiki bar, and Royal Railway – Utopia Station, an immersive dining experience inside two custom train cars.

On the way back to my cabin on Royal Caribbean International’s newest ship, I stumbled upon a party.

After a long travel day, I figured I’d turn in early on the first night of the cruise. But I followed a crowd of fellow passengers and the siren call of loud music into Utopia of the Seas’ Royal Promenade, where I found myself in the midst of the One Hit Wonders Street Party. As I sang along while members of the Entertainment Activities Team danced to Baha Men’s “Who Let the Dogs Out” – wearing dog ears and tails – I forgot it was a Monday.

On Utopia, the weekend is as much a time frame as a state of mind. The cruise ship is launching on Friday with short three- and four-night sailings, a first for the line’s Oasis Class. The line is the second-largest cruise ship in the world, after Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , which launched earlier this year.

“Every Royal Caribbean vacation is about memories,” president and CEO Michael Bayley said at the ship’s naming ceremony during a preview cruise this week. “With Utopia of the Seas, we said, 'Let's make those moments possible for every mood, every weekend and any day of the week.' ”

Here’s what guests can expect.

Where will Utopia of the Seas sail?

The ship – which can accommodate 5,668 guests at double occupancy – will visit Royal Caribbean’s private island destination in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay, and Nassau. The three-night sailings will depart on Fridays from Florida’s Port Canaveral, followed by four-night cruises on Mondays.

What’s new on Utopia of the Seas?

The ship is the sixth in the Oasis Class and has the same layout as its predecessors, with eight distinct neighborhoods. But Utopia features several new venues.

Pesky Parrot, named for an animatronic bird that will perch inside, offers a Caribbean take on a tiki bar in the Royal Promenade. While tiki has typically drawn influence from Polynesian culture , the space is stocked with spirits from the region such as rum from Angostura, based in Trinidad and Tobago. “Obviously with a name like Royal Caribbean, the Caribbean is very, very important to us,” Linken D’Souza, the line’s vice president of food and beverage global operations, said during the cruise.

I tried the Painchiller – a frozen drink made with Bacardi Caribbean Spiced rum, Hard Truth Toasted Coconut rum, piña colada mix and blood orange sour, garnished with a pineapple slice – which served its advertised purpose on a hot, humid evening.

Bayley described the bar's feathered muse as a “drunken parrot” that would serve as both amusing barfly and heckler, cheekily mouthing off at guests. “Because what the hell?” he said during a media briefing. “I mean, you come on vacation, it doesn't need to be serious.” The bird had not yet arrived during the preview cruise but was expected to in time for the maiden voyage.

Down on Deck 4, the cruise line built a train station – or as close as you’ll find to one on a cruise ship. Royal Railway – Utopia Station offers an immersive dining experience inside two custom train cars, each seating 24 people. Guests can enjoy the scenery from destinations well beyond their planned ports of call courtesy of screens inside window panes, along with themed menus and entertainment. There’s even a classic flipboard outside and a train platform.

The Railway will launch with the 90-minute “Wild West Train Trip.” During a tour of the space, there were vibrations of what felt like train tracks under my feet, while scenes of mountains and cacti flashed in my periphery. At one point, the fictional head engineer directed our attention to an American buffalo running by. The line also invested in custom dishware and Royal Railway gear for actors.

Another more date-night-oriented show centered around the Silk Road is expected to debut in the coming weeks, with plans for more programming in the works.

Pro tip: Because of the Railway’s various moving parts – so to speak – punctuality is important. “Once the train departs, there is no boarding the train because it's left the ship and gone on its journey,” said Jay Schneider, chief product innovation officer and senior vice president for the line's parent company, Royal Caribbean Group .

Other features being unveiled on Utopia include The Spare Tire. The grab-and-go snack station – serving Mediterranean veggie wraps, cheese and pepperoni Tornados and more – is housed in what looks like a food truck, conveniently located near the ship’s five pools. The new Solarium Suites offer 280-degree views at the front of the ship.

Some familiar amenities have been updated, too, like Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar, which is now in a two-story space toward the ship’s aft, and an extended Ultimate Abyss, which allows Royal Caribbean to reclaim the title of the longest dry slide at sea. Riders enter through the mouth of a giant deep-sea fish near the top of the ship before hurtling 10 stories down to the Boardwalk neighborhood.

AQUA80too in the AquaTheater is also a sequel to the previous show AQUA80, with one jaw-dropping acrobatic feat after another timed to music.

What stood out?

The party I attended my first night was not an isolated event. The schedule was packed, from Royal Kappa Chi – which didn’t start until 1 a.m. – where guests can relive their college days with games like flip cup, to the Las Vegas-style PLUNGE daytime pool party.

Other new programming was designed with children in mind, like a parade featuring superhero characters the Effectors. Parents can enter a lottery through the Adventure Ocean kids club , and four kids will win the chance to participate each time.

Christi Coachman, the cruise line’s vice president of entertainment, described Utopia as a “taste” of what passengers might experience on a longer cruise.

“It was really important not only to continue to create the family experiences because that's very important for our brand, but also to go in a little bit of a different direction and have one party after the other to where you don't ever stop,” she said.

Not everything is so high-energy, though. One night I had dinner in the ship's outdoor Central Park neighborhood and listened to live musicians play string renditions of popular songs.

How much does Utopia of the Seas cost?

Prices vary by sailing date, cabin category and other factors, but a three-night cruise departing Oct. 11 starts at $943 per person based on double occupancy.

Fares include most food on board, drinks like lemonade and regular coffee, and more.
