The Trek Domane+ LT 9 draws looks inexorably. To begin with, that’s because of the Gloss Purple Flip finish #colorporn! Once you’re done ogling the paint job, you’ll notice the hefty appearance and it becomes clear that this is an ebike. Trek rely on FAZUA’s Ride 50 Evation system consisting of a gearbox fixed in the bottom bracket and Drivepack. The gearbox incorporates a torque sensor and cadence measurement, letting the system know how much power the rider is producing so that it can deliver appropriate motor support depending on the assistance mode. The Drivepack unit is partly integrated into the down tube, can be completely removed and contains a 250 W, 55 Nm motor together with a 252 Wh battery that can be swapped out. You can switch the system on and select between the three assistance modes, Breeze, River and Rocket via the Bluetooth remote on the top tube. While Breeze will support you with a constant 100 W regardless of your own input, the progressive River mode modulates its output in sync with your power up to a maximum support of 210 W. Rocket then, once again, supports you independently of your input, this time with 250 W. Different modes for different uses. Do you have heavy legs and need a little support? Choose Breeze. Do you want to work hard but be quicker than usual? River is your thing! Shuttle service needed? It’s Rocket time! All this applies to the factory settings but the modes can also be adjusted individually, for example with Rocket providing short-duration peaks of 400 W support. A Shimano DURA-ACE Di2 groupset with 50/34 t chainrings and 11–30 t cassette eschews the standard cranks in favour of the FSA SL-K Light cranks that were developed especially for the FAZUA unit.

The gear range is sufficient for flat sections and hilly tours, but on longer hills without or with limited motor assistance, a 34 t cog at the back wouldn’t hurt. Instead of DURA-ACE rotors, the Domane+ LT 9 comes with 160 mm XTR mountain bike rotors. The cockpit consists of the 100 mm long Bontrager XXX Blendr carbon stem and the 420 mm wide Bontrager Pro IsoCore VR-CF bars. The latter damp vibrations and small bumps effectively thanks to a special carbon layup and, thankfully, let you forget the lack of IsoSpeed system at the front of this Trek. The bike rolls on 700 x 32C Bontrager R3 tires, mounted tubeless on the Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3V TLR wheels, which balloon to 34 mm wide thanks to the impressive 25 mm inner width of the rim – a very well matched wheel and tire combination for this group test and bike concept! The Trek Domane+ LT 9 frame is furnished with mounting points for mudguards and is ready to be fitted with an integrated light system. The Trek Domane+ LT 9 costs € 10,999.

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 weighs 13.42 kg in size 56 making it the heaviest bike in the test and significantly heavier than the two other E-road bikes. It can’t hide that fact when it comes to the handling, making it the bike that requires the most significant steering input to change direction. As a result of its more imprecise and not particularly direct steering, it feels sluggish and falls behind the SCOTT and Orbea ebikes.

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 might be the heaviest ebike in the test but also offers the widest range of application amongst the E-road bikes. Charge the battery, attach lights and mudguards, and you have an all-round carefree package!

trek domane lt 9

Nonetheless, it always remains good-natured. That character also fits the moderately stretched position which is well-suited to long distances and offers the best comfort of the three ebikes in the test. The adjustable IsoSpeed system on the seat tube, the wide Bontrager tires and the IsoCore bars do a whole lot of work. The IsoSpeed system decouples the seat mast from the main frame generating lots of comfort. However, the bike loses marks for the seat mast cap, which is very short due to the IsoSpeed system, limiting the range of adjustment. Riders with comparatively long legs won’t be happy here. In addition, you should also be aware that the Trek has a wider Q-factor than traditional bikes as a result of the FAZUA gearbox in the bottom bracket. The stiff frame means the bike responds directly, even above the assistance limit of the motor, though it does miss some sprightliness due to its high overall weight. As such, the Domane+ LT 9 can’t match the SCOTT Addict eRIDE Premium. By contrast, acceleration with motor support is very powerful. The FAZUA motor delivers noticeably more torque than the MAHLE Ebikemotion system, while the throttling of the motor at the 25 km/h assistance limit feels very natural. Having gotten used to the comparatively high inertia of the bike, there’s nothing to complain about regarding ride security. Even on rough ground its sits planted and with its good stability conveys the highest sense of trust of all the ebikes in the test. And this trust is maintained while braking too – there’s plenty of power on tap!

Indended Use

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 expands the definition of road bike very much in the direction of E-SUVs with drop bars but convinces with the best everyday practicality of all the E-road bikes in the test. The mudguard mounts and ready-to-use light mounts make it the ideal bike for all those looking for a powerful cruiser for paths away from asphalt but who also like to push hard on the pedals themselves now and then. What you won’t find is a low weight or a cornering demon.

No, it’s not about perfect race tracks, it’s about efficiency. Fast, fleet-footed and efficient – those who want to speed along high-speed passages need a defined and spritely bike that accelerates with ease and efficiency. Nevertheless, reliable components are important too. We interpret “Smooth tarmac” bikes as follows: Hard efforts at high speeds with a maximum efficient bike on a consistently well-paved road. Effort-joy ratio: 80:30 (not everything has to be 100%!) ↩

… also known as bike riding. Broken-up roads in the hinterland, deadlocked gravel roads, loose surfaces – sometimes muddy, sometimes bone-dry. For this, it takes bikes with super all-round, handling and wearing qualities uphill and downhill. Effort-joy ratio: 50:50 ↩

If you want to use your bike almost every day, you usually do not need an extremely tuned racing machine. Solid components, which are able to cope with the rigours of continuous usage in any kind of weather, are part of the basic equipment. At the same time, the bike should have practicable details: integrated fenders/assembly options, luggage racks/attachment points and a light system or at least the option of installing bike lights. The position on the bike should be rather relaxed, the overall comfort high, so that the Afterwork Ride becomes a cure and not a curse. Effort-joy ratio: 30:70 ↩

Luxury Class in Long Distance Test – E-Road Bike Trek Domane+ LT 9

Trek Domane+ LT 9 e-road bike in the test

Even with some reservation, one thing can be said about Trek’s Domane+ LT 9 at first glance – this ebike is anything but ordinary. Its look is too striking, its equipment too noble, its electric drive too inconspicuous. Without having any reliable proof, we are certain that these characteristics will attract people other than an “ordinary” ebike. Those whose pulse beats faster at the sight of this bike probably love the adrenaline and sweat they get from cycling. The feeling of happiness when cycling on remote paths while a bird joins you for a few wing beats in the distance is up to others.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 in the test – The prelude

Therefore, this test deliberately deviates from the usual pattern. It starts about a week before the Domane+ ride. On that day, 120 kilometres are on the agenda. Constantly into the headwind towards the west, about 650 metres of altitude uphill, almost exactly as many downhill and without electric assistance. Why? For two reasons. Firstly, it can be helpful to recall the memory of such an experience in the body and later to draw a comparison with the motorised experience. Secondly, the riding experience with the Domane+ can be compared with that on other ebikes. However, it feels like that would only be half the truth.

Between a question mark and the whole truth, whatever that might be, there are just over 140 kilometres with around 2,000 metres of altitude on the actual day of riding That is, of course, only the metres of altitude where the arrow points upwards. Based on the data, some of you may look questioningly and want to know how the battery is supposed to cope with that. The answer is clear: not at all. With a capacity of 252 watt-hours, it is quite clear that the battery will run out of power on the way. But with a purchase price of around 11,000 euros, the test is entitled to be challenging. Besides, we ourselves are curious to see what can be expected for such a sum. At the same time, there are still enough kilometres left to find out how the bike rides without the motor, but with the weight of the drive on board.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 in the test – The lightness of rolling

The first awakening comes when carrying the bike up from the cellar. The total weight of about 14 kilograms sounds pretty low. But at this early hour of the morning, the difference to a conventional road bike is clearly noticeable. One to nothing lead for pretty much every better bio-bike. The equaliser, however, does not take long to come. Only two minutes, to be precise. Then it starts, the ride into the unknown. And it only takes a few turns of the wheel to eliminate some of the uncertainty immediately. Wheels and cranks are not statements, they are a whole lecture. Whereas during shouldering the weight of the bike was absolutely present, this seems to have been swept away. Always amazing what effect reducing the weight of the moving parts on a bike has. In this case, carbon as the material in each case and in exactly the right spot. If the going gets tough on the mountain during the course of the tour, one thing is already certain: it can’t be because of these two components.

Test ride with the Trek Domane+ LT 9 e-road bike

The first 30 kilometres are almost flat. Perfect for getting to know the bike and getting into the tour. Major roads are deliberately left aside. It simply suits the calmness of the still rather young day better. It also unintentionally highlights the Domane+’s next strength. Because we pay for the luxury of traffic calming with noticeably rougher road surfaces. Cobblestones, patchwork of asphalt and makeshift gravel construction sites alternate in a lively sequence. From the e-road bike, this is visible but hardly noticeable. In addition to the wheels and cranks, the entire frame is made of carbon. Due to the stiffness of the material, it should really shake you up. Yet it doesn’t. Instead, the IsoSpeed integrated into the top tube and the head tube absorb most of the shocks. Only a few vibrations reach the hands and buttocks. The 32 millimetres wide tyres also dampen very effectively. So the passages that can quickly ruin your mood, instead definitely awaken the riding enthusiasm. Mountains, here we come.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 in the test – Unexpected things often happen

And there they are, the mountains. Or at least the first crisp climbs. After crossing a river, the route climbs up the slope from the river bank with a gradient of up to 20 percent. Nimble fingers are needed here. Quickly switch from the Breeze mode of the Fazua drive to Rocket mode on the control unit and then select the appropriate gear on the derailleur. That’s only 500 metres. But every single one of them acts like a wake-up call, literally calling out to us: You’re riding an ebike, feel how beneficial that can be.

On the climb with the Trek Domane+ LT 9 e-road bike

Doesn’t hurt at all. At the beginning of the tour, such a climb is still doable without Rocket mode.

A few bends later, however, the navigation system causes some brief confusion. It actually wants us to leave the road on the left and follow a path that is more inviting for hiking than for cycling. Wasn’t the tour planned exclusively on cycle paths and roads? According to komoot, this apparently has to be a cycle path. Interesting.

Cockpit of the Trek Domane+ LT 9 e-road bike with internal cable routing in the head tube

If there’s anything to complain about, it might be the drive control unit. It would be much better placed directly on the handlebars.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 in the test – Hidden talents

Partly heavy rainfall has softened the forest path considerably. Stones, roots, fallen branches, washed-out gullies and the fortunately now somewhat more gentle gradient turn the next eight kilometres or so into an unexpected off-road adventure. Yet with a happy ending. The Domane+ cuts a really fine figure in all the rough and tumble. For one thing, it allows a compact position on the bike even in this terrain, so that even on such technical passages, both uphill and downhill, there is never any discomfort. Upper body, shoulders and arms can remain relaxed and still exert enough control. Trek calls the Domane+ an endurance road bike. You benefit noticeably from the extra comfort this means for the geometry with such interludes.

Riding off-road with the Trek Domane+ LT 9 e-road bike in the test

The start of the hiking trail is very soggy. We sink in correspondingly deep with the e-road bike. However, this is not a real test for the Fazua motor.

On the other hand, the wider tyres truly underline their versatility. With them, this section nevertheless feels safe at all times. We only deliberately avoid obvious sharp edges so as not to risk tyre damage. According to the manufacturer, the factory-fitted 32 millimetres of width can be increased to 38 millimetres. Intuitively, we would have expected even more leeway. If you want to ride the Domane+ regularly off the beaten track, we can only encourage you to do so. The bike definitely has a lot of gravel potential.

Riding off-road with the Trek Domane+ LT 9 e-road bike in the test

A little later, the ground improves and the off-road excursion begins to be full of fun.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 in the test – The lurker

The only downer of the unexpected detour into the countryside is the look at the remaining battery capacity. That cost. From now on, it’s time to be more careful with the reserves. Back on the asphalt, the route continues through small villages towards the ridge of the Ore Mountains. The trek is as unobtrusive as the route goes gently uphill all the time. It does not draw attention to itself in any way. Shifting with the electric Di2 from Shimano is a delight. Whether everyone needs this level of perfection just when changing to the smaller of the two chainrings or any sprocket on the cassette is open to question. While riding, however, it feels very harmonious and definitely earns honest praise.

Test ride with the Trek Domane+ LT 9 e-road bike

On smooth roads, the bike rolls along without a sound. No rattling, no grinding. As usual, nothing can be heard from the Fazua Ride 50 Evation either. Wonderful.

At around kilometre 60, we decide to further limit our energy consumption. There are still about 25 kilometres to the highest point of the tour. Moreover, it is a good 300 metres above our current level. It was certainly a good choice to set “Roadbike Chilli Milli” as the riding profile in the Fazua Rider app before starting the ride. The setting is supposed to be optimised for longer distances. For this, only a maximum of 60 watts is available in Breeze mode. In Rocket mode, it goes up to 210 watts. The acceleration is designed to be even. All this is done in the hope of not wasting energy unnecessarily by being too lively. After all, Fazua promises a range of up to 150 kilometres with this setting in Breeze mode. Of course, nothing is said about the road surface, route profile, weather conditions, etc.

Test ride with the Trek Domane+ LT 9 e-road bike

However, from now on the Breeze mode will have to do the job. Together with what’s in our own tank. In the end, this actually works out quite well. Almost exactly on the “roof” of our tour, the last green LED on the Remote fX fades away. A second involuntary off-road interlude played its part. A classic case of “checking the navigation system too late”. Then we took an “alternative” route in the direction of the planned one. And yes, the confidence gained in the first off-road session was certainly involved in the decision making ?

Later, by the way, the drive will report back again briefly. After a rest, an LED appears again as we continue. On the next more serious climb, however, it disappears again. This time for the rest of the route.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 in the test – This fast is safe

The nice thing about a lap whose highest point is roughly in the middle is – exactly – the second part. With what the body is still capable of and a constantly decreasing residual profile, we hurry towards the starting point. At first, that sounds like pure relaxation. Anyone who has ever set out on longer descents in a more exhausted state knows that this can also be very challenging. After all, physical fatigue should not spill over into mental fatigue. For such a phase, you want a bike like the Domane+ LT 9, especially its Dura Ace disc brakes with 160 millimetres discs. You can always rely on them while descending at a good 70 kilometres per hour. Especially on an unfamiliar bike, which remains a test bike even after more than 100 kilometres ridden, a certain reluctance normally always sets in. That is also the case here. Only this “safety barrier” takes effect much later than on other ebikes. Via its geometry, the balanced seating position and the sheer quality of the components, the model conveys a sense of safety. And the fact that the motor is there doesn’t feel like it matters at all. On the downhill and on the straight, you’ll be over the 25 km/h assistance limit in no time with the Domane+ anyway.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 e-road bike in the test

When we get off the bike, two things go through our minds once again. Firstly, if Fazua ever had an ebike in mind that could be transformed into a bike without a motor with just a few moves, it would probably be very close to the Trek Domane+ LT 9. Secondly, do you also feel that this road bike has made us better riders today?

Electronic shifting

Electronic drivetrain systems deliver excellent shifting, easy set up, and solid battery life. Here are the highlights of today’s electronic shifting systems:

Shifting Performance Electronic shifting systems use powerful servomotors to rapidly shift the chain. Because microprocessors and sensors constantly monitor every aspect of the system, they shift with precisely and without chain rub.

Customization Many major systems have customizable shifting. Some have the ability to add remote shifters for common riding positions, and some even allow you to change the functions of the shifting buttons.

Dependability Electronic groupsets are responsive and consistent. There are no cables to stretch and wear out, so you get a flawless shift every time. The added bonus is you’ll never have to replace a derailleur cable ever again.

Rating: (4.9/5)

Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 is a high-end carbon fiber electric bike designed for road cycling enthusiasts who seek a genuine road bike experience with extra power.

Now, let’s dive into the riding experience, key features, components, and specifications of the Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2. In the latter part of this article, we’ll also compare it with several other bikes. If you’re interested in more bike reviews, feel free to follow us.

Riding Experience

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 features a 500 Series OCLV carbon fiber frame and fork, combined with an efficient electric drive system and Shimano’s top-tier wireless electronic shifting system. This setup offers road cyclists a faster, smoother, and more comfortable riding experience.

I took my gear and set out on a ride with the Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 to a countryside town nearby. I had made a hotel reservation using IHG for the surrounding area, so I set off immediately. This route was expected to be over 100 miles long, mainly on asphalt roads, with some uphill and downhill stretches, interspersed with some unpaved gravel sections.

Cruising on Flat Roads

Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2

Right from the start, I was impressed by the agility and responsiveness of the Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2. The high-end carbon fiber frame made it feel incredibly lightweight, and the frame’s rigidity provided a powerful and swift response to every pedal stroke, resulting in a sense of high-speed travel.

Next, I wanted to experience the high-speed riding capabilities of this bike. Shifting gears with the Shimano’s top-tier Dura-Ace Di2 transmission system was almost instantaneous, delivering an incredible shifting experience. I shifted into an aggressive riding posture and began pedaling vigorously. The bike accelerated rapidly, feeling like a bullet.

On the unpaved gravel sections, the bike’s comfort was remarkable. The carbon fiber frame had decent shock-absorbing properties, and the IsoSpeed design further enhanced my comfort, ensuring that rough road conditions didn’t translate into discomfort during my ride.

Climbing and Descending

Climbing can be a challenge, but the Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 is an e-bike equipped with the Fazua drive system. During uphill climbs, the high-performance motor provided consistent and effortless support, making each ascent a breeze.

The endurance bike’s geometry allowed me to maintain a stable center of gravity while climbing. The weight distribution was well-balanced between the front and rear ends, ensuring consistent forward power, and resulting in faster climbing speeds.

During long downhill descents, I didn’t need to pedal at all. The 700C large wheelset’s excellent rolling efficiency allowed for fast and stable descents.

However, for safety on extended downhill sections, I needed to control my speed, and the Shimano Dura-Ace hydraulic disc brakes were my reliable companions. Their powerful braking capability allowed me to easily control my speed, maintaining reliability even with continuous braking, ensuring safety.

Specifications

Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 features a 500 Series OCLV carbon fiber frame that perfectly combines lightweight construction, strength, and rigidity, ensuring a comfortable and lightweight ride.

There are a total of 7 frame sizes available, suitable for riders ranging from 5’2″ to 6’5″ in height. This bike offers broad adaptability and accommodates riders of nearly all heights.

The lightweight Fazua drive system can provide an extra power boost when needed, ensuring smooth and powerful power transmission. However, when you don’t need it, the ride feels just like a traditional bicycle.

The all-new high-performance Dura-Ace Di2 transmission components provide a precise and rapid shifting experience. The top-tier hydraulic disc brakes offer strong braking power in all weather conditions.

What do we like about it?

  • The Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 bike looks, rides, and feels more like a traditional road bike.
  • When the Fazua system is turned off or at maximum assist, it doesn’t add excessive resistance.
  • Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 wireless electronic shifting system for precise and fast gear changes.
  • IsoSpeed design absorbs road vibrations, resulting in a faster, smoother, and more comfortable riding experience.
  • You can remove the battery and other components when you don’t need extra assistance, converting the bike into a regular Domane, and reducing the weight by 2.9 kg.
  • The 500 Series OCLV carbon fiber frame perfectly balances lightweight, strength, and rigidity.

What don’t we like about it?

  • The price is high and may not be very budget-friendly for beginners or riders with limited budgets.
  • Where was the frame of this bike manufactured?

Almost all Trek bikes are manufactured on foreign soil. Factories producing Trek components and accessories are located in the Netherlands, Germany, and China.

  • Is there a shipping fee for buying this bike online?

All bikes ordered online are delivered for free to your local Trek store for professional assembly. Participating retailers may even deliver your new ride to your doorstep.

  • How do I choose the right size?

We provide a size chart here as a reference, but it’s not necessary to strictly adhere to it. The best way to find the most suitable size is to test ride the bike.

Accessories

Comparison table, trek domane+ lt 9 gen 2 vs. canyon grail:on cf 8 etap.

Canyon Grail:ON CF 8 eTap

Comparing these two bikes, the former will be significantly lighter in weight, providing an easier and more relaxed riding experience.

In terms of drivetrain components, the former is equipped with the Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, offering a 2×12-speed configuration with a broader range of gear combinations. It supports faster riding and delivers exceptionally smooth shifting. In contrast, the latter comes with the SRAM Force eTap 1×12 components, which are of a lower tier compared to the former but still provide reliable shifting. The 1×12-speed setup simplifies gear changes, allowing riders to maintain focus consistently.

Lastly, the Canyon Grail:ON CF 8 eTap features wider tires, making it better suited for riding on gravel roads. Conversely, the Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 may not perform as well on gravel surfaces, but it excels in flat road riding, offering a greater advantage.

So, between these two bikes, I would recommend the Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2. It boasts higher-end components and faster speeds.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 vs. Orbea GAIN M10i 20mph

Orbea GAIN M10i 20mph

They both feature carbon fiber frames and forks, maintaining the bikes’ lightweight and comfortable.

In terms of drivetrain and brake components, both of these bikes are equipped with top-of-the-line Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 components. They offer powerful and reliable performance, making them among the best components available.

However, the former has some design details that enhance its riding comfort and enable it to handle certain non-paved road surfaces, resulting in a strong overall performance.

So, between these two bikes, they are both top-tier options. However, I prefer the former for its overall performance and its ability to handle a broader range of road surfaces.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 vs. Scott Solace eRIDE 10

Scott Solace eRIDE 10

When comparing these two bikes, the latter has a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. It looks cooler. However, the former is lighter in weight, making the ride easier.

Both of them are powered by strong motors, but the latter has a larger battery capacity, resulting in better battery life for its rides.

In terms of drivetrain and brake components, they both use top-of-the-line Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 components. They offer precise and rapid shifting, as well as powerful and efficient brakes.

In the end, between these two electric bikes, if you value long battery life, the Scott Solace eRIDE 10 can meet your needs. If you want a faster and easier ride, the Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 would be more suitable.

Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2 vs. 3T Exploro RaceMax BOOST Superlight Red AXS 1X12 700c

3T Exploro RaceMax BOOST Superlight Red AXS 1X12 700c

When comparing these two bikes, although the latter uses a carbon fiber frame and fork, the former has a carbon fiber wheelset, which offers a lighter and more responsive riding experience with better durability compared to the aluminum alloy wheelset of the latter.

In terms of drivetrain components, the former features the top-of-the-line Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 2×12 drivetrain, which offers silky-smooth, precise shifting and a wider range of speed options. On the other hand, the latter is equipped with the SRAM RED eTap 1×12 drivetrain, also a top-tier SRAM component, with crisp and efficient shifting. Both are premium choices, but the former provides more versatility in speed selection, while the latter’s 1x design simplifies gear changes and helps riders maintain focus.

To sum it up, both of these bikes are top-tier options. Whichever you choose, you’re making a good decision.

Above is my review of the Trek Domane+ LT 9 Gen 2. In our opinion, it’s a powerful electric road bike with excellent battery life. This is why we’ve given it a rating of 4.9.

Of course, if you’re interested in other electric road bikes, we review a wide range of bikes at various price points, and they’re all quite fascinating. Feel free to explore our other reviews.

Trek Domane SLR 9.9 Project One first ride review

Eye-burstingly expensive but bum-coddlingly comfortable

Rob Spedding

Incredible levels of comfort, potential gravel-dabbling versatility and the adjustable IsoSpeed system is genuinely useful

Very expensive, even for base-level models

The third generation of the Trek Domane carries the revised rear IsoSpeed layout first seen on the new Madone , has massively increased tyre clearances, features neat integrated storage, and has a host of aero-improvements that make it a true — and truly comfortable — super bike.

  • The 2020 Trek Domane gets more aero, more adjustable and goes disc-only
  • Trek’s cheapest ever Madone is here
  • Best road bikes 2019: how to choose the right one for you

2020 Trek Domane SLR9.9 Project One key specs

Delightful sparkly glittery Trek Domane

  • Updated frameset with top-tube mounted IsoSpeed system
  • Semi-internal cable routing
  • SRAM Red eTap AXS groupset
  • Bontrager Aeolus XXX 4 wheelset
  • Bontrager R3 28mm tyres
  • Project One bikes start at £9,650 / €10,500

More comfortable, more aero, more faster-er

The headline figures for the new Trek Domane SLR are impressive — Trek claims the bike is up to 27 per cent more compliant than the previous flagship Domane, “one minute per hour faster” than the last model and the top-end Project One version we were given to test around the roads of Padova, Italy, has a £9,650 / €10,500 ($ N/A) price tag.

I’m not expecting you to feel sorry for me but that last figure is actually one of the problems with bike launches — we get to ride the toppest of top-spec machines and, with few exceptions, they’re always impressive. And Trek will be pleased to hear that their flagship Domane Mk. III is impressive.

I’m going to start with the faster claim. While not an overtly aero bike in the same vein as the Madone, Trek has generally cleaned up the Domane to make it more slippery.

There’s nothing instantly obvious — no Kammtail seat tube, air-slicing fork designs or minuscule clearances between tyre and frame. Cables, however, are now almost entirely internal which will go some way to reducing drag.

Domane SL5 cable routing

Almost entirely internal? Trek has opted to only internalise the cables from the top tube back, which is something that I’m happy to support. Should you want to swap your bars or, you know, travel with your bike, there’s no battling with a complicated, proprietary internally-cabled stem and bar system.

Is this setup faster than the last Domane? Well, the external ‘cabling’ on this rider surely negated any aero gains from the bike but, I was lucky enough to ride last year’s Madone SLR at its launch and that, genuinely, felt like a rocket ship. Even when I was feeling rinsed, I’d look down at my Wahoo and be amazed at the speeds I was sustaining.

The Domane didn’t quite perform such miracles and doesn’t have the same accelerative oomph as the Madone but, honestly, it feels fast enough, not least for an endurance bike.

Our test model was rolling on Bontrager’s excellent Aeolus XXX 4 47mm-deep aero wheels — these are stiff, stable and quick and complement the frame well.

We’re used to bike brands telling us how their latest and greatest bikes are lighter than ever before but the new Domane has put on around 200g over the previous iteration, but then the same — at the very least — can probably be said for me compared to when I rode that Madone.

I can’t say that the Domane felt like a slouch on the climbs — I did and our Italian ride guide Allesandro will vouch for that — but it isn’t necessarily designed to be a KOM-killer in the same vein as the Emonda . You’ll have to wait for the climbing verdict of someone far skinnier for a definitive view of the Domane’s ascending attributes.

Trek Domane Mk3 tyre clearance

Tyre-wise, you can fit rubber up to 38mm-wide on the new Domane with 4mm of clearance on either side, and all bikes below the 9.9 we were riding will ship with new 32mm tyres.

It’s de-rigueur to point a comfort bike at potholes and the Domane, with its front and rear IsoSpeed, does a truly excellent job at soaking up all but the biggest hits

These, claim Trek, roll faster than narrower tyres in almost all conditions and help contribute to the Domane being their most versatile road bike ever. Could the Domane be a road and gravel machine rolled into one? Certainly, the journalists who took the Domane on a hard, fast and technical gravel ride seemed impressed.

For the road ride, we were running standard 28mm rubber and this was in no way detrimental to the Domane’s main selling point — its comfort.

  • Best road bike tyres in 2019: everything you need to know

Okay, the Italian roads we were riding were, on the whole, pretty good but there were still opportunities to test the bike’s compliance. It’s de-rigueur to point a comfort bike at potholes and the Domane, with its front and rear IsoSpeed, does a truly excellent job at soaking up all but the biggest hits.

The star of the Domane’s cushioning show is the adjustable toptube IsoSpeed damper... you can tune your Domane from racy stiff to smooth operator in just a couple of minutes

When we did encounter a rutted, broken asphalt descent the Domane handled it with aplomb — the compliance encourages you to descend faster and brake later than you might on a more rigid machine.

The star of the Domane’s cushioning show is the adjustable toptube IsoSpeed damper, which debuted on the Madone in 2018. Undo a couple of allen bolts below the top tube and a slider is revealed — move it forwards and you add more flex, backwards and the bike stiffens up.

As with the Madone, this really does work and there’s a tangible difference, meaning you can tune your Domane from racy stiff to smooth operator in just a couple of minutes. It’s worth mentioning that the top tube-mounted IsoSpeed system is only available on SLR models, although the SL’s will inherit the tuneable seatpost IsoSpeed currently found on the outgoing range toppers.

The front end IsoSpeed isn’t tuneable but does a good job of isolating shocks through the bars and the bars themselves are carbon IsoCore models. These have a layer of elastomer within the carbon which Trek says adds another 20 per cent of cushioning to the front end.

Elsewhere, our test build was decked out with SRAM’s Red eTap AXS 12-speed groupset . We love it, simple as that and, of course, the fancy Project One pearlescent paint is always a hit with any MAMIL who once lusted after a TVR Chimera .

2020 Trek Domane Mk. III early impressions

Obviously, we want to spend a lot more time on the new Domane and will be getting our hands on one back in the UK soon but first impressions are good.

It’s an excellent bike that does a very good job of catering for both fans of speed and connoisseurs of comfort. Of course, we’re also keen to test the more affordable — though the base Tiagra-equipped model comes in at a pricey $2,499 / €2,299 / £2,100 — 2020 Domane SL models as these are likely going to be more relevant to more riders. Watch this space.
