Drive Time Calculator

How to use drive time calculator, estimated time of arrival, travel time to home, meet the creator of the drive time calculator.

The drive time calculator – also known as the travel time calculator, is our innovative tool created exclusively for drivers. It helps you find out the estimated time of arrival (ETA) at your car trip destination and determine the fuel costs of the journey.

So, if you are planning a vacation trip with friends in a seaside resort or would like to estimate the travel time to home by car, check out our drive time calculator!

Our drive time calculator covers every aspect of your trip: it calculates the total time needed to complete your journey, predicts your arrival time at the destination, and determines the overall cost of the drive, including the cost per person.

To accurately determine your arrival time and the total driving duration, follow these steps:

Before entering any values, choose your preferred units of measurement , where applicable. For instance, you can opt for imperial or metric units when specifying distances. This selection will determine how the calculator interprets your inputs.

Enter the total distance of your trip.

Specify your average driving speed during the trip.

Enter the total duration of breaks you plan to take during the journey.

Specify the departure time , day, month, and year.

Upon entering these details, the tool will calculate the total driving duration and exact arrival time based on your input.

If you're interested in determining the costs associated with your trip , use the second section of the calculator and follow these steps:

Specify your car's fuel consumption rate .

Indicate current fuel price .

Input the number of passengers traveling with you.

The calculator will subsequently determine the total drive cost and the cost per person based on the provided information.

For example , consider a scenario where you must drive 140 km (87 mi) at an average speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). You plan to take a 30-minute break, and your departure time is January 22, 2024, at 7:00 pm. In this case, the calculator would compute a total drive time of 2 hours and 15 minutes, estimating your arrival at the destination on January 22, 2024, at 9:15 pm.

Moreover, if your fuel consumption rate is 8 liters per 100 kilometers (62 miles) and the fuel price is $0.90 per liter, the total cost of your journey would be $10.08. If you're traveling with a companion, you could split the cost, resulting in $5.04 per person.

🙋‍♂️ If you need to be at a specific destination by a particular time and are wondering when to depart, our calculator has you covered — it works in reverse, too! Here's how to use it:

Input when you intend to arrive at your destination in the variable arrival time .

Enter the total distance you need to cover.

Specify the average driving speed you plan to maintain.

If you plan to take breaks during the journey, enter the total duration.

The calculator will determine the optimal departure time , ensuring you reach your destination as planned!

Have more questions about the estimated time of arrival? Keep reading.

Estimated time of arrival (ETA) is the time when a vehicle, ship, aircraft, or cargo is expected to arrive at a particular place.

For example, a particular cruise bus may have an ETA calculated based on the expected average speed on a particular road. The travel distance is simply divided by the speed to roughly estimate the arrival time. This method does not consider any unexpected events (such as car accidents on the road or bad weather conditions) that may occur on the way to the driver's destination.

Visit our speed calculator to learn more about how to calculate speed.

Let's assume we are driving home with friends from a winter vacation in the mountains.

The distance to our home city is 850 km .

We are driving with an average speed of 110 km/h .

We will make three short 15-minute breaks and 1-hour long dinner break, which gives:

Total time of breaks = 3 × 15 min + 1h = 1h 45min

We will start the trip on the 21 February 2018 at 10:00 am.

Now, the most interesting question – when will we be at home? Let's calculate the total drive time:

Total drive time = (distance/average drive speed) + total breaks time = 9h 28min

Arrival time: 21 February 2018 at 07:28 pm

Now, we want to know how much this journey will cost us. With our drive time calculator, the answer to this question is very simple!

  • Let's assume that our SUV car takes 9.5 liters of fuel per 100 km.
  • The gasoline price is €1.22 per liter.
  • We are traveling as a group of 4 friends -> Number of passengers = 4

The answer to the question is below:

Total drive cost = (distance/100) × car fuel consumption × fuel price = €98.52

Drive cost per person = total drive cost/number of passengers = €24.63

Super! Now, we know all we need – the exact travel time to home with an estimated arrival time and how much each passenger needs to pay for that journey. Let's start the engine! 🙂

We also have a great tool called traffic density calculator that helps you analyze the traffic on any road.

Check out the gas calculator , too, if you need to estimate the fuel cost for a drive.

I'm Filip, the mastermind behind the drive time calculator, and I'm a biomedical and electrical engineering graduate from AGH University of Krakow.

My motivation to develop this tool emerged during a road trip, where the challenges of planning a long journey, including costs and time uncertainties, became evident. In response, I envisioned a solution — a tool that calculates travel duration and considers essential factors like fuel costs. The outcome is a user-friendly tool designed to simplify journey planning , whether for extended trips or daily commutes.

How do I calculate the average speed for my trip?

To calculate your average speed for your trip, you must note the trip distance and drive time or travel time and follow these steps:

  • Subtract the total time used for breaks from the drive time.
  • Divide the trip distance by the difference obtained in step 1.
  • The value calculated is the average speed for the trip.
  • Verify your result with our drive time calculator.

How fast can I reach Boston from New York driving at 60 mph?

It'll take 3 hrs 35 mins without any breaks. Allowing for a 15 min break, it'll take you 3 hrs 50 min. Here's how you can calculate this answer:

If you take the I-90 W, Boston is 215 miles from New York.

Divide this distance by the average speed to get drive time without breaks:

215/60 = 3.5833 = 3 hrs 35 min .

Add a 15 min break to drive time for a convenient and safe drive to get a total drive time of 3 hrs 50 mins .

Verify with our drive time calculator.

How do I calculate mileage of my vehicle?

To calculate the mileage of your vehicle, follow these steps:

  • When refueling, note the initial odometer reading and the amount of fuel you're filling.
  • When you stop for fuel again, note the final odometer reading .
  • Subtract the initial odometer reading from the final reading and divide the difference by the amount of fuel used.

How far can you drive in one day?

Assuming you drive for 8 hours in a day at 60 mph, with 15 min breaks every 2 hours and an hour-long lunch break in between, you can drive 390 miles . To calculate this answer, follow these steps:

Calculate total break time :

15 min + 60 min + 15 min = 1 hr 30 min .

Subtract this from 8 hours to get 8 - 1:30 = 6 hr 30 min .

Multiply this time with 60 mph average speed to get the distance traveled:

60 × 6.5 = 390 miles .

Verify this result with our drive time calculator.

    Speed, Distance & Time Calculation

In order to use the above speed, distance & time calculator, or do such math on your own, you will need to know two out of three metrics: speed, distance, time. You will need to convert the metrics to the same time and distance units, e.g. miles, kilometers, meters, yards, feet, and hours, minutes or seconds. For example, if you have speed in mph (miles per hour), time should also be in hours. If you have distance in kilometers, then speed should also be in km/h (kilometers per hour).

The unit of the result will depend on the units you input, but our speed calculator will conveniently display additional units where appropriate.

    Average Speed formula

The formula for average speed, also called average velocity in physics and engineering, is:

where v is the velocity, d is the distance, and t is the time, so you can read it as Speed = Distance / Time . As noted above, make sure you convert the units appropriately first, or use our speed calculator which does that automatically. The resulting unit will depend on the units for both time and distance, so if your input was in miles and hours, the speed will be in mph. If it was in meters and seconds, it will be in m/s (meters per second).

Example: If you took a plane from New York to Los Angeles and the flight was 5 hours of air time, what was the speed of the plane, given that the flight path was 2450 miles? The answer is 2450 / 5 = 490 mph (miles per hour) average speed. If you want the result in km/h, you can convert from miles to km to get 788.58 km/h.

    Distance formula

The formula for distance, if you know time (duration) and the average speed, is:

Example: If a truck travelled at an average speed of 80 km per hour for 4 hours, how many miles did it cover in that time? To find the miles covered, first, calculate 80 * 4 = 320 km, then convert km to miles by dividing by 1.6093 or by using our km to miles converter to get the answer: 198.84 miles.

    Duration (Time) formula

The time, or more precisely, the duration of the trip, can be calculated knowing the distance and the average speed using the formula:

where d is the distance travelled, v is the speed (velocity) and t is the time, so you can read it as Time = Distance / Speed . Make sure you convert the units so both their distance and time components match, or use our trip duration calculator above which will handle conversions automatically. For example, if you have distance in miles and speed in km/h, you will need to convert speed to mph or distance to kilometers. The time unit of the result will match the time unit of the speed measure, so if it is measured in something per hour, the result will be in hours. If it is measured in some unit per second, the result will be in seconds.

Example: If a train can travel 500 miles with an average speed of 50 miles per hour, how long it would take it to complete a 500-mile route? To find the answer, use the formula and substitute the values, resulting in 500 / 50 = 10 hours.

How to calculate the average speed of a car?

Say you travelled a certain distance with a car or another vehicle and you want to calculate what its average speed was. The easiest way to do that would be by using the calculator above, but if you prefer, you can also do the math yourself. Either way, you need to know the distance to a satisfactory approximation, for which you can use a map (e.g. Google Maps) to measure the distance from point to point. Make sure you measure closely to the path you took, and not via a straight line, unless you travelled by air in which case that would be a good approximation. Of course, having a GPS reading of the distance would be more precise. Then you need to know the travel time. Make sure you subtract any rests or stops you made from the total trip duration.

If the total distance travelled was 500 miles and the time it took you was 5 hours, then your average speed was 500 / 5 = 100 miles per hour (mph). If the distance was 300 kilometers and it took you 5 hours to cover it, your speed was 300 / 5 = 60 km/h (kilometers per hour).

A car can go from rest to 45 km/hr in 5 seconds. What is its acceleration?

Guys how much time will a cyclist take to cover 132 METRES With a speed of 8 km/ph

@Mike Depends on how fast that actually is. For every 10 mph above 60, but below 120, you save 5 seconds a mile. But between the 30-60 area, every ten saves 10 seconds a mile (if I am remembering correctly), and every 10 between 15-30 is 20 seconds. Realistically, it isn't likely isn't worth it, unless it is a relatively straight drive with no stops, in which case you will likely go up a gear for the drive and thus improve gas efficiency for the trip. Only really saves time if it is over long trips 300+ miles (in which case, assuming you were on the interstate) that 5 seconds a mile would save you 25 minutes from the drive, making it go from 4h35m to 4h10m. For me, I have family across the U.S., so family visits are usually 900-1400 miles. Even only driving 5 above usually saves me 90-150 minutes or so (since I often have stretches where I drive on US highways which have 55 mph speed limits)

I would like to know if driving fast is worth it for short trips. If I drive 10 MPH over the speed limit for 10 miles, how much time do i save ? Is there an equation for that ?

it helps me in lot of stuff

awesome, helped me notice how long my taiga (electric seedoo) is going to last.

How Driving Distance Is Calculated Between Two Locations

Algorithm for calculating driving distances between cities.

This route calculation tool harnesses the power of shortest path search algorithms within a weighted road graph, employing sophisticated algorithms like Dijkstra, A-Star, and Contraction Hierarchies . Unlike conventional calculators that use distance or travel time as the graph weight, our system optimizes drive time for vehicles, favoring routes on higher-class roads for a smoother journey.

The backbone of this tool is built on OpenStreetMap data, ensuring our road graphs are accurate and up-to-date. We calculate distances between road segments with the haversine formula , using precise GPS coordinates to measure the Great Circle Distance. This formula is pivotal for calculating "air distance" or "straight line distance" between two points, taking into account the curvature of the Earth.

Road distances, however, diverge from straight line distances due to the natural curvature and layout of roads . To address this, roads are represented as segmented lines, and the haversine formula is applied to each segment, allowing for precise calculation of the journey length between any two points.

Recognizing that cities encompass large areas, our tool selects a central point within each city for distance calculations between cities. For personalized route planning, users can specify exact addresses or select points on the map. Additionally, the route's start and end points can be adjusted directly on the map for enhanced customization.

Travel time calculations break down the route into segments, evaluating the maximum permitted speed for each segment to estimate the fastest possible travel time.

It’s important to note that while our route calculation relies on advanced computer modeling for accuracy, no model is perfect. We encourage users to plan with a margin for adjustment to ensure a reliable and efficient journey.

Alternative Methods for Distance Calculation Between Two Addresses

One simple way to measure distance is by using a highway atlas. By tracing a route with your eye and rolling a curvimeter along it, you can gauge the distance. Estimating travel time involves assuming an average speed of 50 miles/hour on major intercity roads. Although this method provides rough estimates, it's straightforward.

In the absence of a curvimeter, a ruler can serve as a substitute. Start by aligning the ruler's zero mark with your route's beginning and follow the road's bends closely. Then, translate the measured length into kilometers or miles using the map's scale, which is typically provided in the atlas.

For those seeking a more streamlined approach, pre-calculated distance tables specifically for the USA are available on websites, atlases, and guidebooks. Particularly useful for journeys between major cities, these tables streamline planning, although they may omit smaller locales.

Here’s what to pack in a carry-on bag every time you travel

Caroline Tanner

If you're new here, you should know I am firmly team carry-on and rarely check a bag, while some of my colleagues prefer to always check a bag .

Even if you insist on checking a bag, certain items should always go in your carry-on.

Here are 18 items to never check.

Identification documents

car travel time

This one should go without — your identifying documents, such as a passport or valid driver's license, are among the most important items to keep close when traveling, especially abroad.

If you're traveling domestically and don't need a passport, those 18 and older still need a driver's license or other state photo identification card from their state's Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) to pass through security at U.S. airports.

A full list of Transportation Security Administration-accepted forms of identification is available here .

Once you've reached your destination, you'll likely need to show some form of ID to check into a hotel or rent a car. When traveling internationally, the U.S. government recommends carrying a picture of your passport while keeping your passport (and other valuables) securely locked in your room (in a hotel safe, if available).

Additionally, the State Department advises travelers to print travel itineraries and other important documents in case something happens to their phone or accessing Wi-Fi is difficult.

car travel time

A phone is helpful when traveling, especially if you have a plan with international data.

From finding your way around cities you've never visited before to being able to book rideshare services or make reservations, your phone is essential when traveling.

Related: The best credit cards to use for rideshare apps

Phone charger with a travel adapter

Traveling with your phone also means having to charge it more frequently, which is only possible if you've brought the right charger and any necessary adapters (if applicable).

Keep your electronics and chargers in a carry-on for easy access on the plane, where you can also use the in-seat charging power outlets on many airlines.

Charging inflight ensures your phone is fully charged before exiting the plane, minimizing the chance of a dead battery en route to your hotel or other accommodations since your room may not be available for check-in when you arrive.

This is also helpful if you have a lengthy layover between flights since airport charging stations can be hard to find.

As a female traveler who sometimes travels solo, a working phone is crucial. All travelers, solo or not, should pack a portable charger in their carry-on and always bring that with them when they go out and about.

Headphones (wireless and wired)

car travel time

If you're like me, you'll never travel without two sets of headphones (one wireless and one not) since wireless ones may run out of battery — and in many cases, won't be able to connect to the In-Flight Entertainment screen on your plane.

Keep your headphones and AirPods within easy reach at all times.

If you travel with a suitcase that houses a battery pack for charging, such as those from Away , remember that it must fall within TSA guidelines .

Multi-Charging device

In addition to your phone, other Apple products, such as an iPad and Apple Watch , require separate chargers. To lessen the load, consider purchasing a charging device that allows you to charge multiple Apple devices at once .

I'd also recommend keeping all of your chargers contained in their own specific bag or pocket within your smaller carry-on item, preferably the one that sits under the seat for easy access.

A change of clothes

car travel time

Per my earlier comment, the last time I checked a bag, it was a huge mistake.

I missed my connecting flight due to inclement weather, and my luggage was sent without me to my final destination. I had to spend the night in an airport hotel in Miami with just my backpack and the clothing I had been wearing for almost an entire day. I'm not the only traveler to go through something like this.

"I always keep at least one change of clothes for myself and each of my kids in my carry-on, even if I am checking a bag," said TPG senior reporter Tarah Chieffi. "If our checked luggage is delayed or lost, or inflight accidents occur, we always have a fresh change of clothes."

This is the kind of scenario that always seems like it won't happen to you, until it does.

Tarah also recommends throwing in a grocery bag or large zip-close bag for dirty clothes in your suitcase or using a suitcase that provides a reusable laundry bag .

You'll appreciate having easy access to a fresh change of clothes , especially on long-haul flights or ones with long layovers, especially when you can freshen up in an airport lounge or an aircraft with showers .

Even if your flight is short and direct, it's still helpful to pack a change of clothes in your carry-on in case your baggage gets delayed.

Reusable water bottle

car travel time

Another item we recommend traveling with is a reusable water bottle . Just make sure the bottle is empty before you pass through airport security since most airports limit the number of liquids you can take through security.

Once you head to your gate in the post-security area, you'll usually find free water refill stations, including some with filtered water.

During your flight, request water and pour that water into your bottle so it's full at all times. Just remember to take your water bottle (along with your other items) off the plane when you disembark. I've lost two Hydro Flasks this way.

Keep in mind that flying can dehydrate you, especially if you're drinking alcohol. It's important to pay attention to your water consumption on travel days and make sure you are getting enough.

Considering how much airport stores charge for water and other items, bringing your own water bottle saves money — and eliminates single-use plastic.

Like the water, don't rely on the airport or inflight snacks. Sometimes, when traveling, food outlets may not be available or open when you need them. As someone with dietary restrictions, I always bring snacks. Some of my favorite travel snacks are Go Macro bars ( mini version for traveling ) and Chomps mini sticks , both high in protein.

Prescriptions and other medications

car travel time

If you take medication daily, it's important to first check that your particular medication won't get you into trouble in the country you're visiting. If at this point you're in the clear, pack any prescriptions in your carry-on along with any over-the-counter medications you take frequently or might need, such as pain relievers or allergy medicine, in a travel pill organizer .

I always bring several days' worth of Tylenol, Benadryl, vitamins, probiotics and a few extra daily medicine supplements in case I stay longer than anticipated.

I also pack a few extra pairs of contact lenses. I wear dailies and prefer them over wearing my glasses, though I bring my glasses as a backup. I also bring bandages and a first-aid antibiotic ointment, just in case.

Assistance items

For senior travelers or those who require assistance, do not keep any assistive/medical device item, such as a walking stick or handicapped placard, out of reach.

A good rule of thumb — if it's anything you can't live without for half a day or more, put it in your carry-on, says Erica.

Hand sanitizer, wipes, paper towels and tissues

car travel time

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many travelers carry hand sanitizer (linking my favorite here ) and sanitary wipes to wipe off seats, tray tables, seat belts, etc., upon boarding.

These items are small and can easily fit in your carry-on item. Ensure your hand sanitizer does not exceed the 3.4 ounces or 100-milliliter size requirement .

Other items to consider bringing in your carry-on are paper towels and a washcloth in case of spills or other situations where you need to dry your hands ( or wipe your sweat) .

You might be able to find tissues and band-aids at airports and on planes, though they're likely not going to be great quality. Tissues are small enough to pack a few in your carry-on in case of unforeseen circumstances, from the sniffles to a paper cut.

Beyond your phone and important travel documents such as your passport, keep your most important items close to you while traveling, including jewelry.

Depending on how sentimental they are to you, these items would fall under the "hard to replace if not irreplaceable" category.

Even if you don't routinely carry cash on you day-to-day, we recommend bringing some when you travel for items like cabs, hotel/restaurant tips, smaller souvenir items, tickets and other unforeseen costs.

Cash and credit cards should remain in your carry-on at all times, specifically in a wallet or purse within your luggage, for extra security while also being easier to find. And remember, it's always the cheapest to pay in the local currency versus U.S. dollars when using a credit card. For cash purchases, it depends on the purchase price and conversion rate .

Kindle or a good book

car travel time

Even if your aircraft is equipped with hundreds of hours of entertainment like Emirates boasts , there may be times when it is unavailable, such as when you land at your destination or arrive at the gate. There's also plenty of downtime while flying, such as queueing to board or check-in and waiting at the gate.

If you're someone who doesn't jump up the second the seat belt sign is turned off to stand awkwardly in the aisle for several minutes, that's some spare time, too.

Depending on where you are, you may not have a cellular signal or stable Wi-Fi to pass the time.

A trusty Kindle , or if you prefer, a hardcover book, is a great way to pass the time in these situations.

Something warm to wear

Even if you are flying somewhere warm, aircraft fly at such a high altitude that you may find yourself a little chilly on the flight. This can be especially true when sitting near an exit row door or window. On short-haul flights, most airlines don't provide a blanket.

While filling your carry-on with a huge winter coat just in case you need it isn't always a practical solution, something small that you can fold into a small pile is great to include when packing.

This includes a throw, shawl, pashmina, or light windbreaker-style jacket .

Bottom line

Once you've decided on the items most essential for your carry-on, be sure to decide what carry-on luggage makes the most sense for them to go in.

For example, if you have two carry-on bags, one smaller one that fits underneath the seat in front of you or one suitable for the overhead bin, think about what items you might need most often throughout the flight and position those in your smaller bag.

For everything else, you can always retrieve items from your larger bag from the overhead bin.

Traveling Amtrak For The First Time? Here Are 14 Things To Know About Amtrak Trains

F eel the need to go outside New York City? Confused about which ride to select? Forget going to out-of-the-way airports or using crowded taxi services. The Amtrak train offers the ultimate solution to meet everyone's travel needs. Meet the luxurious train that makes passengers feel like they're at home. The endless amenities and friendly, respectful staff also make one's trip memorable.

Many Amtrak trains successfully run across hundreds of tracks in the United States (most Amtrak trains offer incredibly beautiful routes , too), and there's also a rich history behind the company. Multiple packages are available for every type of passenger, depending on budget, accommodation choice, and other factors. For a pleasant change, the Amtrak company charges no extra fees, i.e., passengers get what they see, unlike some airliners who keep adding extra surcharges to a customer's expense list till the last moment.

Related: Empire Builder: What Makes This Amtrak Route One Of The Most Scenic In The U.S.

Furthermore, passengers get extra legroom for a long journey compared to a car or air travel. The Amtrak also saves on fuel and protects one's personal vehicle from wear and tear if one uses it to travel. So, with that in mind, let's skim through some important things travelers should know about the trains, such as Amtrak train routes and prices, etc.

UPDATE: 2023/06/06 21:47 EST BY REENA JAIN

More Things To Know About Amtrak Trains For First Time Travelers

Everyone should be aware of a few things before embarking on their first Amtrak journey, regardless of the destination or length of the journey. This list has been updated with additional important information, including train routes, prices, schedules, destinations, and more to help travelers have a stress-free, relaxing, and enjoyable Amtrak journey.

The Amtrak App

The Amtrak app makes it simple for travelers to plan and reserve their trips, check Amtrak schedules and destinations, and receive real-time alerts for delays or changes. Users can access their e-tickets through the app, which provides information on Amtrak train routes and prices. Additionally, the app includes interactive maps that help passengers track the whereabouts of the train and get knowledge of the schedule. The Amtrak app has a user-friendly interface and convenient features, making train travel more simple, reliable, and enjoyable.

Expect Train Delays

Amtrak trains need to stop at some places to let large freight trains pass because they share the same tracks. It can result in unforeseen delays in travel times, especially on longer, cross-country routes. For instance, the California Zephyr from Chicago to Denver may need to stop before the Moffat Tunnel to allow a freight train to pass, delaying Amtrak schedules. Therefore, researching Amtrak schedules and destinations is beneficial before making travel plans.

Making A Pre-Departure Checklist Is Helpful

Passengers will require a number of items, including those necessary and desirable for a stress-free and memorable Amtrak trip. Some of these—like an ID—are necessary, while others are worthwhile for an enjoyable Amtrak journey.

Identification

Passengers must have a photo ID or passport with them.

Train Tickets

Passengers should have hard copies of their tickets or electronic copies of their tickets on hand.

Travel insurance

It's essential to protect oneself from unanticipated travel mishaps.

Passengers who will need to take any medication while traveling must bring it with them.

Other Essentials

Personal care items, snacks, beverages, books, and some forms of entertainment are desirable (but not necessary) for a comfortable trip, particularly on long Amtrak routes.

Stations Have Different Stopover Times

The train makes scheduled stops at various stations during a trip, and the stopover time varies depending on the type of station. If a station is a rest stop, the stopover time is comparatively longer than that of a passenger drop-off and pick-up location. Knowing if a specific stop is a designated rest stop where passengers are permitted to disembark is preferable for those who want to smoke because smoking is not permitted on the train or simply want to move around the station.

Reasonable Ticket Prices

Amtrak tickets are reasonably priced! The average price of a ticket from New York to Atlantic City is about $94 (although Amtrak's famous roomettes typically cost much more ). It is pretty budget-friendly compared to any airline fare on the same route, and it is not even the lowest price out there. The cheapest tickets on this Amtrak route can even be found for only $82.

The best thing is to avoid rush hour and book your Amtrak tickets well in advance. Plus, a cool tip: Amtrak offers saver fares on each route, where passengers can save up to 20% compared to the standard Coach fare when booked at least 7 days in advance. Furthermore, Amtrak fares for seniors (aged 65 and up) are 10% less than the standard fare on most trains in the United States, and seniors (aged 60 and up) pay 10% less for cross-border services operated by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.

Plenty Dining Choices

Amtrak offers many dining choices to its customers. There is something tasty and appetizing for every passenger, from adults to kids. Some of these main options include:

Passengers can access the café, which is open to passengers from all classes of the train from the early morning until late at night. Whether business or economy class, there are snacks, drinks, and food items for everyone.

  • Traditional Dining

Traditional dining service for passengers in private rooms is provided in the dining car as a complimentary exclusive offering.

  • Flexible Dining

Exclusive offer to First Class passengers to eat at flexible timings. Special diet menus are also available at Amtrak for customers with specific dietary requirements. The food menu comes with a detailed calorie breakdown as well.

A Variety Of Accommodations

The Amtrak from New York to Atlantic City offers various services and accommodations. Among the expert tips for first-time Amtrak passengers is to check the various room options available in order to best fit the needs and budget of a passenger.

  • Seating Options

Even the Coach class has the best comfy seats. Imagine reclining sofa-like seats with spacious areas. The addition of multiple amenities combines to make the trip a relaxing one! For passengers with mobility impairments, Amtrak provides accessible seating arrangements.

  • Private Rooms

Amtrak provides a unique luxurious experience to its passengers by offering private rooms to First Class. If one wants privacy and their own space on a short trip with added comfort, then a private room booking is the perfect step.

Related: California Zephyr Vs. Southwest Chief: Which Amtrak Train Route Is More Scenic?

Wi-Fi On Board

The Amtrak train comes with complimentary Wi-Fi during traveling. The speed of Amtrak Wi-Fi is less than a passenger’s home or work Wi-Fi network. Furthermore, the same Wi-Fi gets shared by all the passengers on the Amtrak from New York to Atlantic City. So, each passenger should try to surf the internet in such a limited way as not to overburden the network for the other onboard users.

The key is not downloading large files or streaming heavy videos online and keeping fellow passengers in mind while using the shared Wi-Fi. That is why limited access is provided by Amtrak so that more onboard bandwidth is available to all passengers. Access to websites with objectionable content is also restricted in this shared onboard Wi-Fi.

Onboard Upgrades

The trains are divided into classes: Coach, Business, and First Class. All these classes differ from each other, with a different set of rates and amenities for each of them. So, if space is available as unoccupied in a class, one can upgrade from one's original class to that higher class seating. It can be from Coach to Business or Business to First Class.

This smart feature can change the outlook of one's whole journey. Passengers only need to speak to the conductor onboard. They might inform about the availability of such an upgrade and let passengers purchase a new class seat.

Passengers Can Bring A Bicycle Along

Amtrak offers its customers the opportunity to bring their bicycles along. One can explore the stops along the way during a train journey - and what better way to do that than by bike? Ride the rails on board the train with a bike - sounds awesome! Amtrak offers several different services to transport a customer’s bike onboard.

Remember, though, that each train has different equipment and loading procedures that decide what service will be offered. The starting and ending destination stations also determine how or what is allowed by Amtrak regarding one's bicycle. For carry-on/train side, bicycles up to 50 lbs are allowed. Here, standard bicycle sizes apply with a maximum tire width of 2 inches.

Enjoy Guest Rewards

Amtrak offers a guest rewards system to its customers . The points earned can be used to travel on trains, stay at hotels, and shop.

  • Earning Points

Customers can earn guest rewards by earning points through various means, both on and off the train. Passengers can earn 2 points for every $1 spent.

  • Redeeming the Points

Customer of Amtrak can easily redeem their earned points. The reward travel begins at just 800 points, with train travel allowed to over 500 destinations.

  • Member Benefits

Becoming an Amtrak member rewards customers for every ride on and off the train.

  • Bonus Points

One can earn 20,000 bonus points with the new Amtrak Guest Rewards® Preferred Mastercard®. Customers can even choose from over 350,000 hotels worldwide to stay at using their collected points.

Passengers Can Bring Pets

Pets are allowed to travel on Amtrak. However, like with air travel, there are restrictions. Dogs and cats can come on trips that can take up to seven hours on most Amtrak routes in a pet carrier - of course, for a small fee. The pet carrier must also be spacious and highly ventilated, allowing for free movement of the animal, and the weight of the pet and carrier combined must be under 20 lbs.

Things to Note About Pets on Amtrak Trains

  • Service animals are readily welcomed on all Amtrak services as they are not included in the pet category.
  • Pets are not allowed to travel as baggage. A pet must travel with its human counterpart on a train.
  • Only dogs and cats are allowed to travel as pets on Amtrak, and pets must be at least eight weeks old and up to date on all vaccinations.
  • Amtrak highly recommends making pet reservations in advance of one's trip.

Baggage Limits

With Amtrak, customers can shed their baggage worries as the company handles everything meticulously. As baggage, a customer may bring 2 carry-on items. Here, limitations apply regarding weight and size. So, browse them beforehand. Checking this guide on what to pack for an Amtrak train ride may also be handy in terms of prioritizing what to bring (and what not to bring to save baggage weight and space).

Similarly, for checked luggage, each traveler can bring 4 bags, 2 are registered as free, and the other 2 are at $20 per bag. Again, size/weight limitations apply. For special items of baggage that require special handling or are outside the normal baggage category, Amtrak may ask for additional packing requirements and service fees. Amtrak also prohibits certain items onboard trains for security purposes.

Going with unreserved seating on a packed train? No worries. Travelers can find a Red Cap (baggage porter) to escort them to the train. They can access the track before the masses and carry their bags. Red Cap services are free, but a generous tip is recommended.

No Security Line No Waiting

Amtrak lets passengers simply go to the track and get on the train. There is no security line blockage as there is at the airport. With a reduction in airport TSA staff and more passengers flying, travelers need to get to the airport about two hours before their flight just to have enough time to check in or check a bag and clear security.

With Amtrak travel, one's ticket might be scanned before entering the platform or scanned onboard, but there is no waiting line. On the other hand, Amtrak recommends arriving 30 minutes before one's train departs.

You're reading the Essential California newsletter

Our reporters guide you through the most important news, features and recommendations of the day.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

  • Seven day trips to take by train from Union Station.
  • Who were the masked men behind the UCLA camp attack?
  • Peruvian sushi blooms in Long Beach.
  • And here’s today’s e-newspaper

Ditch the car, catch the train

The stress of traveling out of L.A. takes many forms: high-priced gas pumps, bumper-to-bumper traffic and a constantly crowded LAX. One way to minimize that stress is taking an Amtrak train for a day trip.

Snag a seat on the left side if you’re heading north to get the best view of lush valleys and agricultural land, plus breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean and beaches.

Similarly heading south, sitting on the ocean side will also get you some great views once you pass San Juan Capistrano. You might even recognize the Mediterranean-style station in Santa Ana from the TV series “True Detective” and the movie “Rain Man.”

Times contributor Marsha Takeda-Morrison compiled seven day trips that start at Union Station and take three hours or less each way. Each includes plenty of activities within walking distance of the destination stations.

Unlike with air travel, you can bring your own food and an upgrade to a business class seat won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Here are a few destinations Marsha features:

A couple walks beneath the Ventura Pier

This station is only a 10-minute walk from downtown Ventura. Known for its sprawling beaches that have long been popular for surfing, windsurfing, fishing and biking, Ventura also offers a charming and highly walkable downtown.

To truly take in the scenery of Ventura and its surrounding areas, Marsha recommends bringing your bike (see rules for transporting a bicycle on the train here ) to ride the popular Ventura to Ojai bike route .

Carpinteria

A person rides a bicycle across a palm tree-lined street

Called “one of California’s last great beach towns” by Times writer Christopher Reynolds, Carpinteria has an eclectic collection of restaurants and shops, and touts a hefty reputation among surfers.

Rincon State Beach is one of the most popular surf spots in California and holds the annual Rincon Classic Surf Competition.

The train station is located on the town’s main street, Linden Avenue, which makes for an easy walk to the beach or to grab food. Dog lovers are in for a treat as Island Brewing Company , a dog-friendly microbrewery, is directly across the street from the station. In case you’re wondering: yes, you can bring your pet on an Amtrak train with a reservation and a fee.

San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano with a U.S. flag and California poppies.

Known for the Mission San Juan Capistrano , this beautiful small town is also home to the Los Rios Historic District , considered the oldest neighborhood in California. The area is across the tracks from the train station.

But if you happen to be traveling to San Juan Capistrano on the second Saturday of July, you may be treated to another one of the town’s historical assets: mooning of the Amtrak . Throughout the day, hundreds flock to the fence lining the tracks and moon the passing trains. The annual tradition apparently started in 1979 when a patron at a nearby saloon offered to buy a drink for anyone willing to run outside and moon the next train … Cheers, San Juan Capistrano!

Best Stroller and Car Seat Combos

Chicco Bravo Trio Stroller

Buying a traditional stroller and researching the many models and features that you can choose from, is a rite of passage for many new parents. But there are reasons you might want to buy a child car seat and stroller together—also known as a travel system —instead.

Travel systems bundle together a stroller and a compatible car seat. The car seat clips into the stroller to function as the seat, and it can pop easily into and out of a car seat base, making for seamless transitions on the road with your baby. For many parents, that’s an irresistible advantage.

That’s why we’ve put six popular brands through both our rigorous stroller and car seat tests—so that you can find one that works best for you.

5 Best Stroller and Car Seat Combos

  • Why Buy a Travel System?

How CR Tests Travel Systems

The car seats and strollers in these systems work seamlessly together, but each can also be bought separately, unless where noted. Make sure your purchase is compatible with the stroller or car seat you have before you buy.

Why Buy a Stroller and Car Seat Combo?

A few reasons: First, when you don’t have to take your baby out of a stroller harness and strap her into a car seat, she’s more likely to stay asleep when you make those transfers between stroller and car. You simply click the car seat out of the stroller and click it into the base in the car. As any sleep-deprived, peace-and-quiet-seeking new parent knows, this is particularly helpful.

There’s also the fact that infant car seats can turn some strollers designed for older children into infant-friendly models. A stroller’s seat might not recline fully, as it needs to in order to accommodate an infant under 6 months old—but if it accepts an infant car seat, you can use the stroller with the car seat for those early months of your child’s life. Then, once they’re old enough, you can put your child directly into the stroller.

Finally, and very importantly, bundling the stroller and car seat usually costs less than buying the two items separately. For instance, the Chicco Mini Bravo Plus stroller and the Chicco KeyFit 30 Car Seat retail for about $200 each, but the Chicco Mini Plus travel system , which includes both, costs around $380.

It’s worth noting that a travel system is different from a car seat stroller , which is a car seat with attached wheels and a handle. With a car seat stroller, the whole contraption functions as a stroller when fully expanded and a car seat when collapsed. It’s a handy design, but when your child outgrows the car seat, you’ll need both a new car seat and a new stroller. Travel systems and car seat strollers are also both distinct from car seat carrier strollers , which are simply frames on wheels that a compatible car seat can clip into to function as a stroller.

If you already own a car seat, you can buy a compatible traditional stroller and car seat adapter; the stroller and car seat don’t need to be from the same brand. But our testers say you’ll get the most seamless experience when you buy a dedicated car seat and stroller bundle.

“With a travel system, you’re getting products that the manufacturer has designed to work together,” says Joan Muratore, who oversees CR’s stroller lab.

The Overall Score for each travel system in our ratings is based on the performance of the stroller in our dedicated stroller tests, the performance of the car seat in our dedicated car seat tests, and how easily the car seat and stroller attach to each other. For the stroller test, we assess safety, maneuverability, and (among other things) how easy it is to fold and manage the straps. For the car seat test, we evaluate how easy it is to use in addition to how well its crash protection works and how easily it fits into a vehicle using the car’s LATCH system or safety belts. For more details on how we test, see our articles on the best strollers and the best car seats .

To learn more about how to shop for strollers, see our stroller buying guide . Curious about how other strollers compare with travel systems? See our comprehensive stroller ratings , where you can sort by type, price, and more.
