Yes, Santa Clause, we are still in Virginia

Sherri dropped me off from the fantastic zero at Claytor Lake at about 9:30.  Another homerun Sherri!  Thank you!  It rained pretty big, but rather be raining for a zero than trying to walk in it.  Knocked out 7 miles by lunch trying to get to a little outfitter right on trail called Brushy Mountain Outpost.  They supposedly had a little deli to get sandwiches I had heard about.  When I got there, there is a sign on the door.

the trek 360

Another Strikeout

You got to be kidding me!  That wasn’t the only sign.

the trek 360

What event precipitated this sign?

Waited out more rain for a couple of hours and sat under their shelter.  Then hiked in a few more miles to a shelter and camped with some new hikers and hadn’t met before, Tidy and Stich.  Did a big day trying to get to yet another just off trail deli, which turned out to be a country convenience store that had a bunk house.  Got a Gatorade, a lemonade, a turkey sandwich to get in another meal.  It was still a little early so I hiked in a couple more miles for a total of 19 and camped by Dismal Falls.  Really cool campsite right by the small river, on a Friday night.  There was a Forest Service road real close on the other side of the river and a local family was tailgate camping right across the river.  Was very reminiscent of camping with my kids with they were young.

A Different Kind of Hostel

Decided to go to Woods Hole Hostel, had heard it was a really cool place that had farm to table communal dinners.  Sounded great!  Did an average 14 miles to get there in time for yoga on the front lawn at 4:00.  Yes, Billy Bob did yoga on the lawn in loaner clothes.  The place is has an original log cabin structure built in the 1880’s and opened as a hostel in 1986.  Neville, the granddaughter of the original owner has taken it to a new level.  They are actually from Georgia.  Had an amazing Mexican Lasagna dinner, with LOTS of fresh salad, homemade dressings, homemade bread, and homemade cookies.  Breakfast was awesome as well.  Definitely a homerun and if you hike here you shouldn’t miss it.  A place I told Sherri she would enjoy just coming to for the experience.  Can’t say that about the other places, although the Discerning Hiker was very nice.

the trek 360

Woods Hole Hostel. Notice the lettuce garden on the right

Hiked on the next day and made it to Pearisburg and the Angels Rest Hiker Haven.  Ate Mexican at a restaurant not a attached to a gas station, so that was a big plus.  Went to Walmart and then got a pizza from a place next door.  Had tacos, a beer and a margarita.  Caught up with Ivan and LuLu although they were a day ahead.  They had done a slack pack 20 miles SOBO back to Angels Rest and that’s what I decided to do the next day.

Its Dry in Virginia

Hiked a few more days, camping at various shelters or campsites.  Just starting to have to really plan where to camp and get water as its not nearly as readily available here.  All the rain we got further south, they obviously haven’t been getting here.   Its also starting to get hot.  I have only been carrying a liter of water at a time and getting some thru the day.  Now I am carrying two liters most days and getting where I can and it is starting to dictate where to camp.

Virginia Triple Crown

There are three very significant points of interest in Virginia on the AT and they are not that far apart.  We did all three in the last two full days of hiking.  The first is the Dragons Tooth, a very large outcropping of rock that looks like a giant dragons tooth.  It was a really tough climb, both up and down from Dragons tooth.  Very rocky, very technical, had to put the trekking poles down a lot especially on the way down.  Was really exciting, but made for a really long day.

the trek 360

Stich on top of Dragons Tooth for perspective. Billy Bob didn’t trust his late in the day legs to climb it.

Hiked on in to Four Pines hostel pretty late in the day and pretty whupped.  Guess who was there waiting on me?  Ivan, LuLu, and Machine took a zero there so that we could do McAfee’s Knob together the next day.  They knew that I planned to spread some of Luke’s ashes there and wanted to be there for me.  I was very touched.  They are all great people and I am very thankful that I have met them out here on the trail.  McAfee’s Knob did not disappoint.  The views are fantastic.  There are more more pictures on Instagram, @Billybobhikes as well as an epic video a juvenile bear that got within about 30 yards of us.  Thanks to Machine for spotting him way off and the wind was just right, he didn’t know we were there for a while.

The view is amazing!

There is a 360 video of the view on Instagram.  We hiked on to Tinker Cliffs later that afternoon.  A very cool place, extended cliffs for quite some time and incredible views.

the trek 360

Next stop was Daleville Virginia.  Really needed to get there because I was having Sherri send me a new pair of hiking boots to Beech Hill Hostel there.  I was really hoping that might current ones would make it because the were coming apart at an alarming rate.  I had first noted a little wear on them at Woods Hole, and then the next day they started breaking down at an alarming rate.

the trek 360

They made it!

Thankful for the new shoes!  Thank you again Sherri!  Have a few more days hiking till we hit the Shenandoah’s.   And its getting hot!!!!

Until tomorrow!

TDK Life On Record TREK 360 Review

Published on February 10, 2015

UPDATE [January 2022] : This product is no longer available. Find alternatives on our list of the best waterproof speakers or the best Bluetooth speakers .

While they continue to fly further under the radar than they deserve, TDK Life On Record’s recent Bluetooth speaker offerings have had a lot going for them. The TREK Max in particular sounds better than most other “rugged” speakers we’ve had the opportunity to review. One we haven’t had the chance to check out until now is the TDK Life On Record TREK 360.

As the name implies, the TREK 360 offers 360 degree sound, allowing you to place it in the middle of a room and hear it just as loud and clear anywhere. Unlike a lot of similar speakers, this model is more than a beer can-sized cylinder. Not only is it cube shaped, but it’s a whole lot bigger too.

What’s In The Box?

tdk-life-on-record-trek-360-sg-1

With a lot of speakers, the first thing you’ll see upon opening the box is the speaker itself, but here you’ll instead find the manual next to a box containing the AC adapter and different outlet adapters. Underneath all of this you’ll finally find the speaker, tucked between two pieces of recycled cardboard.

Build & Design

Like the other speakers we’ve reviewed from TDK Life On Record, the TREK 360 is only available in black. Having seen this speaker, I can’t say I can imagine it working as well in bright colors, though a silvery gray or white model might have been nice. Still, if you’ve only got one color option, black is a safe bet.

tdk-life-on-record-trek-360-sg-4

The 360 is essentially a cube with a handle on top, measuring roughly 8 inches in every dimension. It’s fairly heavy too, weighing in at 2.6 pounds. You’re not going to carry this speaker around in a backpack, though tossing it into your passenger seat to take to a party is still easy enough, especially considering the handle.

The sleek black look is complemented by the shiny metallic buttons and control wheel on the front of the speaker. This is as cool looking as a black cube can get, but that’s not all it’s got going for it. The TREK 360 is also IPX3 rated, meaning it can stand up to splashing water, but you won’t want to submerge it.

Connectivity

Pairing is fairly easy: just hold down the Bluetooth / Aux button for a few seconds until it begins flashing and then pair from your device. A 3.5 mm in jack is also available on the back of the speaker. If you’re looking for the best audio quality, you might want to use that jack too, as this speaker only uses Bluetooth version 2.1.

tdk-life-on-record-trek-360-sg-8

The TREK 360 hides a lot of functionality behind the guise of one knob and two buttons. The knob acts as a control wheel, putting it in charge of a lot of options. Pressing it in will turn the speaker on and off, while turning it predictably raises the volume. Tap the Bass / Treble button, and it’s now in control of boosting or cutting bass and treble.

Despite the dated Bluetooth, range is still fairly good. I was able to move the source device over 30 feet away without any dropouts or stuttering audio.

Battery Life

TDK Life On Record claims a battery life of up to 6 hours for the TREK 360, and while I was initially disappointed by that claim, hearing the volume the speaker is capable of made it much more understandable. Luckily, TDK Life On Record isn’t exaggerating the claim: I actually got just over 6 hours during testing, even when using the speaker at fairly high volumes for longer periods.

tdk-life-on-record-trek-360-sg-6

The TREK 360 only charges via AC adapter, which we’re never too happy about, but there is an upside. While it can’t be charged via USB, the TREK 360 will charge other devices via USB. Mobile charging is always a plus in Bluetooth speakers, though obviously this will drain your battery faster. The time to recharge it from completely drained to fully charged was about 2.5 hours, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long.

Sound Quality

To enable its 360 degree sound, the TDK Life On Record TREK Max uses a downward facing driver on the bottom for bass in addition to four speakers on top – one on each corner. Though you’ll get the best sound quality using the 3.5 mm audio in jack, we did the majority of testing using Bluetooth, since that’s how most users will likely be playing music from the speaker.

tdk-life-on-record-trek-360-sg-2

Simply put, the bass is astounding for a speaker this size. Even on flat settings it was powerful, but cranking up the bass on the built in EQ pushed it over to incredible. Cranked up, the bass was actually overkill on some songs, and I could feel the synth bass on Pujol’s “Youniverse” rumbling through the floor.

While cranking the bass and treble can hide them a bit, the mids are very nicely balanced when using the speaker on flat settings, providing nice depth to vocals and guitars.

On flat the settings the highs are crisp and clear, though cranking the treble will likely drive them into harshness, at least for modern music. If you’re listening to older blues recordings though, for example, it’s handy to have the extra treble available.

tdk-life-on-record-trek-360-sg-7

There isn’t anything to speak of in terms of actual stereo separation here, but the sound that comes out of the TREK 360 is huge, and cranking the volume doesn’t exhibit nearly as much breakup as many other speakers we’ve seen.

It’s a shame that the TDK Life On Record TREK 360 is saddled with Bluetooth 2.1 and the battery life isn’t spectacular, because otherwise this speaker would be looking at an editor’s choice award. Even so, this speaker has some of the most powerful bass we’ve encountered in a portable speaker to date, and throws in a ton of useful features. If bass is your number one key attribute in a portable speaker, this is absolutely worth a look.

TDK Trek 360 Bluetooth speaker review: This box radiates nicely rendered tunes

Expert's rating.

  • Great omni-directional sound
  • Six-hour battery life
  • Bass and treble control
  • Can’t be recharged via USB

Our Verdict

This cube-shaped speaker delivers better audio performance than you’d imagine given its size. Its price/performance ratio is off the hook.

At first glance, I didn’t think the TDK Life on Record Trek 360 portable Bluetooth speaker would fit in the backpack I wanted to transport it home in. I guess I just don’t associate 6.25-inch wide by 7-inch high cubes with portability. Weak eyesight, bad spatial judgment day, whatever. In reality, it fit quite handily, if without a lot of room to spare. The 4.4-pound heft wasn’t burdensome either.

After the failure of my initial sizing-up, it was on to the obvious upsides of the cube shape—enough air to make things sound good without resorting to psychoacoustic effects. Air is especially important for bass response, as is the acoustic port in the back of the unit. The Trek 360 sounds pretty darn good, and not just for a Bluetooth speaker. My roommate immediately wanted to trade her Bluetooth JBL for it, and I’ve heard far worse sounding units than the Jibble.

tdk 79180 38234 a360 frt.tif83

Though the secondary power/volume/EQ control sticks out a bit, the front of the Trek 360 is handsome and the controls are exceptionally easy to use.

Out of the box, the 360’s mids and highs are nicely balanced, and there’s plenty of bass without it seeming overemphasized. But get this, you can actually adjust the bass and treble using a combination of a button and the main rotary control. Much as you would with many car stereos. That’s not particularly common on a wireless speaker system, and it just happens to appear on a unit that needs little adjustment. Great. I mean… Great!

The other great thing about the Trek 360, as you might guess from the name, is that it radiates sound in all directions. Yup. Omnidirectional. That means you can set it in the middle of your communal circle and everyone can dance around it without experiencing any Doppler effect. Hi-Fi Lord of the Flies. There’s plenty of volume to overcome the crackling of a fire.

The Trek 360’s controls consist of the aforementioned large rotary dial (for volume and EQ)  that doubles as a secondary power switch (push), the Bluetooth connection button, and the EQ button. Lights around the edge of the power/volume rotary knob show the current volume and power/charging status.

tdk 79180 38234 a360 bk

The “back” of the 360 is home to the acoustic port, and hidden underneath a weatherizing rubber cap: the AC port, USB charging port, primary on/off switch, and mini-stereo auxiliary input. The rubber cap is difficult to see in this picture, but it’s there.

On the back of the 360, hidden beneath a weatherproofing rubber plug, are the primary power switch, an auxiliary line-in, a full-size USB 2.0 port for charging other devices, and the AC jack. The Trek 360 sports a real AC wall wart; you don’t recharge it using a micro-USB cable as you do most. That makes for a quicker charge, but it means you can’t power it from portable sources. TDK claims six hours of run time and I saw just a hair less than that.

The Trek 360 has one feature that my personal jury is still out on—auto-starting playback on the originating device upon connection. Everyone to whom I demonstrated this feature found it mildly startling and a bit intrusive, at least initially. Of course, the next time I connected to another player I wondered why playback hadn’t started. Geez, it’s fun being human. In the end, I decided this was something I can live with but would rather do without.

The Trek 360 is one of the best-sounding wireless speakers I’ve listened to, regardless of connection technology: Bluetooth, Play-Fi, Sonos, AllPlay, etc. Audiophiles might complain that Bluetooth isn’t lossless, and you wouldn’t want to mix down your SoundCloud/YouTube masterpiece on it, but it’s sonorous enough for most users. And, while your initial impression, like ours, might be one of “bulky”, the Trek 360 isn’t really that hard to drag around.

Good job, Imation.

TDK Life on Record TREK 360 review; big sound in every direction

TDKSG2

When it comes to Bluetooth speakers, there's plenty out there to choose from. If you want to get a bit more premium, the choices start to thin out quite a bit. Try to get an upgraded option, but still remain affordable, and the choices are fewer. With the TREK 360, TDK wants to give you reason to think smaller without considering compromise. With speakers forcing sound in 360-degrees, does the TREK 360 produce enough quality sound to make you want to buy one? We find out.

The small box is touch taller than it is square, and has a handle for easy portability right on top. All plastic with a metal speaker grill wrapping all the way around, the TREK 360 is light without sacrificing a solid feeling. That's pretty rare.

Around back, a small subwoofer port and port array is all you have interrupting clean lines. Ports are hidden behind a rubber cover to shield them from water, as the TREK 360 has an IPX3 rating.

Up front, we have the volume dial, Bluetooth or auxiliary toggle, and bass/treble switch. Plastic, the buttons have a nice click while the multi-purpose volume rocker has a nice action to it.

the trek 360

Pairing the TREK 360 was simple, and it never lost connection or had to search hard to find a device it was paired with previously. On that level, TDK did a good job.

The multi-function dial controls either the volume or bass/treble. When you push the bass/treble button, a new light surfaces around the dial showing you the placement of your bass or treble. Leave the dial alone, and it reverts back to volume in a few seconds.

A built-in rechargeable battery promises 6 hours of playback on a single charge. Our testing resulted in slightly lower time, but not enough to complain about. The water resistant 'weatherized' design does protect against light water mist, but don't leave it out in the pouring rain.

the trek 360

Using TDK Life on Record technology, the TREK 360 packs a mean punch.

It's a little heavy-handed, though. While pop music or rap was enjoyable, acoustic tunes fell flat. The TREK 360 probably has the most bass we've seen in a speaker its size, though.

The 360-degree sound is great, but begs you to put it in the center of a room. It's loud enough to fill the space, too. In a large living room, it was pleasantly loud enough to likely keep conversation at a party to a minimum.

Regardless of direction, the TREK 360 sounds the same.

the trek 360

If you listen to a lot of bass-heavy music, and have space towards the center of a room to house the TREK 360, it's worth your money. At $179.99, it's not cheap, but it does hold its own. Loud and clear, the output is great, but fails to hit the high notes some might feel it should.

Tourtrek 360 one click versus Clicgear 3.5

Hey guys. I'm 47 years old, been playing golf for 30 years, always walk and carry my bag, and have a horrible back. The time had come for me to move into the world of push carts.

I was in Golfsmith today looking at both of these models. Does anyone have some real world experience they can share about either? I know there's a lot of love for the Clicgear around here, but the tourtrek seemed pretty nice too, especially with the swiveling front wheel.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Thanks for the response. Whoa, that's more like a Rolls Royce than a Cadillac. The tourtrek is one click. It's very easy. The Clicgear requires a bit more effort, but wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if it truly was a better, more versatile push cart. It's just that everyone raves about the Clicgear, and I'm sure it's great, but I will say that the tourtrek seemed equally nice and the swivel wheel and one click system seem like good features that the Clicgear doesn't have. e

Looks like the Click gear has a problem with the front wheel falling off and the brakes continually locking up. With the tourtrek, the older model had some complaints about the drink holder not being able to fit a normal sized pop can. You may want to look into that. I would imagine that they have fixed this with the one click.

I'm in the market for a push cart trying to decide what i want I love the 360 wheel idea in the front. I can see that would be much easier to steer around the course then to have to push down and move the front wheel/wheels. Was wondering how good the tour trek line was. Bag Boy has a 360 wheel cart i belive this was the first company to inculde this idea but Bagboy cost more. However i do think it is smaller folded up and i also like the storage/score card area on the handle is better but hard to pull the $250us price compared to the 190 of Tour trek. Found this one last night on Big max golf has a 360 front wheel. I heard that Rovic was adding a 360 wheel and just found it! Rovic is made by Clicgear! I've used the TourTrek One Click 2.0 for 2 years now and would not hesitate to get another one. The big advantage to the TourTrek is how stupid easy it is to fold and unfold. One Click and it's done. I use the hell out of mine and have had zero issues. No problems with the drink holder and comes with adjustable umbrella too. Great product at a great price.

  • 5 years later...

My 12 year old son has a TourTrek 360 push cart and we cannot figure out how to collapse it. There are no videos on how to fold it and it is supposed to be easy, but I have had 3 people look at it and we still can't figure it out. I have downloaded the manual and it says to press the button below the scorecard holder. Not helpful. I have pressed every button possible and it still will not fold. Can someone please give me some guidance? The picture below is not ours, just a stock picture.

Star Trek's Scott Bakula Showed Up For The Franchise's Latest Award, And I’m Psyched For A Couple Of Reasons

Star Trek remains an acclaimed IP and continues to collect accolades in 2024. Just recently, many franchise stars were on hand to celebrate the series being the recipient of the Institutional Peabody Award at the organization's 84th awards ceremony. There's one particular franchise alum that truly caught my attention, though. Enterprise star Scott Bakula was on hand for the event and his appearance, in particular, has me psyched for a few reasons.

Scott Bakula famously played Captain Jonathan Archer on Enterprise , which had a controversial ending that even its co-creator won't defend . With so many upcoming Star Trek shows on the way, I can't help but wonder if there are plans for the actor to make a return based on his appearance onstage at the event (which was posted on YouTube ) and a couple of other key reasons.

Almost Everyone On Stage Has Been Recently Involved With Star Trek, So Why Is Scott Bakula There?

As mentioned, Scott Bakula was far from the only Star Trek actor in attendance at the 84th Annual Peabody Awards. Yet he was one of the only ones who hasn't worked in the franchise in recent memory. Here's a rundown of who all showed up to support the franchise on the acting side of things:

Patrick Stewart

Anson Mount

Rebecca Romijn

LeVar Burton

Tawny Newsome

Wilson Cruz

Sam Richardson

Scott Bakula

Two interesting factoids stand out about this list. One, Scott Bakula was the only actor featured who hasn't worked on a Star Trek project in recent memory. Two, Sam Richardson was invited but hasn't officially debuted yet as part of the Section 31 cast .

If one actor was invited to appear despite their latest project not having aired yet, would it also be possible for Scott Bakula to have received an invite for some future project we don't know about yet? Sure, he might've been invited simply to have some Enterprise representation but, if that were true, wouldn't we see someone from Deep Space Nine on the stage as well? Bakula's presence could be insignificant but, as a fan who just saw him sidestep any involvement in the Quantum Leap revival , I think it's interesting to see him in this context.

Alex Kurtzman Hinted At Surprises Coming To Star Trek

Another detail that has me suspicious about Scott Bakula representing Star Trek at the Peabody Awards is that Alex Kurtzman confirmed surprises were on the way that fans don't know about. As much as I love watching old episodes of Enterprise with my Paramount+ subscription , I am bummed it never received a proper finale and wish the franchise would fix that.

Given that this IP is now loaded with stars who are Star Trek superfans, I would reckon I'm not alone. With another live-action show like Discovery finished, there's room for a miniseries or movie starring Jonathan Archer that could give a more conclusive ending to the Enterprise series than the one we received decades ago.

Even if nothing is currently on the table, I'd like to think that Alex Kurtzman or at least one of the other creatives in attendance have broached the subject with Scott Bakula. Fans want to see Jonathan Archer again and, with so many stars being welcomed back in recent years, why shouldn't he be offered the same opportunity? With so many ways to bring him back in shows via holodeck or temporal distortion, this feels like something that would be easy to work out. Assuming the actor is interested and other tricky variables aren't at play here, there's no reason Trek couldn't pursue this.

Until Scott Bakula is announced to be returning to Star Trek , we can only continue to stream Enterprise on Paramount+. Who knows, maybe conversations are happening behind the scenes that could result in fans seeing more of Captain Archer in the future, along with others members of his crew.
