  • Solo city breaks: the best European cities for solo travellers

The Flash Pack team 15th Sep 2023 9 min read

If you’re in need of a holiday and looking for something a bit different, a city break is a great choice. For those looking to venture abroad, Europe offers a variety of exciting destinations that are quick (if you’re travelling from the UK) and easy to navigate for a weekend getaway. If you’ve only got a few days to spare, solo city breaks are ideal, as they offer plenty to see and do in a manageable area.

We’ve put together seven under-the-radar city breaks for solo travellers, helping you to make the most of your short time away. Travelling solo doesn’t mean that you have to spend your time alone, so we’ve also included tips on where and how to mingle with the locals to experience authentic culture on your European city break.

1. Helsinki

Card image

While Flashpackers are highly intrepid adventurers, sometimes it can be just as fun to explore an easily navigable, compact city. Helsinki offers this, along with friendly locals, an innovative art scene and impressive food culture, including such delicacies as Baltic herring and almond tortes. The helpful locals also make it an easy choice if you’re looking for a solo city break. And with so much to do you won’t have time to feel alone.

For some of the most spectacular views across the city, try Ateljee Bar. To get your bearings swiftly, join a private tour such as Happy Helsinki Walking Tour. To unwind in summer, catch the ferry 10 minutes to Pihlajasaari Island, where you’ll find beaches, nature trails and saunas to rent. Or, if you’d prefer to meet others, join an evening run with the Relaxed Running Meetup to burn off all that local cuisine.

Where to stay

It’s boutique hotels galore in Helsinki, so say hello (or hei ) to quirky courtyards, pretty balconies and elegant terraces. Hotel Kämp provides old school glamour,  Hotel Lilla Roberts channels Nordic chic, and for something a little more vibrant, try the art rooms at Klaus K Hotel . If it’s your first time experiencing solo travel, find simple tip to navigate it in our  beginner’s guide to travelling alone .

The capital of Mallorca, the largest of  Spain’s  Balearic Islands,  offers one of the best solo city breaks for sunset cocktails, great gin bars and awesome architecture. And, Palma is also known for its love of el tardeo , meaning afternoon, which sees locals heading out early afternoon and retiring early evening. One of the best spots to experience it for yourself is in and around the centuries-old market in the old fishing barrio of Santa Catalina.

After an early night, you’ll have plenty of energy for the sights and sounds of Palma, too. Hotspots include La Seu, Palma’s impressive cathedral and the Almudaina Palace right next door. For active solo travellers seeking to meet new people, there’s the Mallorca Hiking and Outdoor Group , while Girl Gone International have regular social events with friendly local expats on the island.

With so many outdoor activities on offer, a trip to Palma can be taken year-round thanks to the weather. For the perfect shoulder season month, this part of Spain is ideal for solo travel in October .

There are loads of stylish and unusual accommodation options in Palma that make the ideal city break for solo travellers. Surrounded by trendy shops and bars, Palma Suites Hotel Residence is a stylish home from home. Boutique adults-only hotel Can Cera can be found within a 17th-century palace. And the stunning rooftop views from Petite Palace Hotel Tres ’ terrace can be enjoyed from its stylishly designed pool area.

As Poland’s cultural capital, Krakow is home to enough trendy bars and coffee shops that you could spend your entire visit with a glass or brimming mug glued to your lips. Whether it’s a dark and atmospheric hangout like Antycafe , or Café Fińska where it’s so hipster you pay with creative contribution rather than cash, Krakow is cool and underrated for anyone travelling alone and looking to bond with others.

It’s also a grand old city positively creaking with history, making it a great break for solo travellers looking to delve a little deeper: Wawel Castle, Rynek Główny (Europe’s largest market square) and St. Mary’s Basilica are both must-sees.

Stay close to the vibrant Old Town where you’ll find copious amounts of restaurants, bars and shops. Formerly a cathedral chapel, Hotel Copernicus can be found on Krakow’s oldest street (although the swimming pool in its medieval cellar is definitely a new touch), offering a unique place to relax and recharge for days of exploring. Try Hotel Wentzl for centuries-old history or the  Balthazar Design Hotel for quirky elegant interiors.

Sitting pretty on the Baltic Sea, the turrets and spires of this Estonian capital create an enchanting cityscape. With fairytale-style architecture standing alongside modern glass museums, Tallinn is a striking blend of old and new, making it one of the best European city breaks for solo travellers looking for a mix of attractions.

Whether you’re snapping a photo of the 18th-century Kadriorg Palace, getting the historic scoop on a walking tour of the Tallinn Walls or just chilling on one of the public beaches, there’s enough to excite the senses for a glorious weekend.

For a room with a view, Hotel Telegraaf is located in the picturesque Old Town and offers five-star luxury complete with roll-top baths and its own sauna. Merchants’ House Hotel is an enthralling warren of passageways, hand painted fresco moulds and wooden balconies. F or cute courtyards and a quirky décor, Hotel Schlossle is a stylish getaway.

The best view of this fashionable city can be seen on a Marnix Bike Tour. Guided by clued-up locals who know the best spots off the pedalled track, it gives you an authentic insight into Belgium’s second city. Whether by bike or on foot, it’s always worth stopping off at one of the myriad museums, such as the Plantin-Moretus.

Fuel up beforehand in the shabby chic Otark Breakfast Club. Or, if you’re looking for something sweet, the many chocolatiers gracing the streets of Antwerp, such as Cho Fleur, offering innovative flavours that are (almost) too good to eat.

The best solo city breaks in Europe come with a generous helping of history, and Antwerp is bursting at the seams with renovated mansions, Art Deco buildings and centuries-old hotels. Located right in the heart of the historic centre, Hotel ’t Sandt is a spacious and elegant place to unwind. With stylish black walls and rainforest showers, Hotel Les Nuits is for those wanting modern glamour. Or, for something a little different, stay at August Hotel , a former Augustinian convent that focuses on mind, body and soul.

Card image

A little pricier than other cities, Oslo is a cosmopolitan hub of spacious parks, designer shops and harbour-side attractions. Travellers looking for a solo city break in Europe are often attracted to its compact size, hospitable locals and easy transport network.

Major sites include the Oslo Opera House, the Holmenkollen Ski Jump and the Munch Museum. Once you’ve soaked up the historic culture, you can enjoy the vibrant café and bar scene or a local outdoor adventure group to explore the natural delights beyond the capital.

Situated at the bottom of Oslo’s trendy Grünerløkka district in Oslo, Anker hotel has slick contemporary interiors and is surrounded by parks and close to the river. Saga Hotel Oslo is a swish boutique hotel with its own sushi restaurant. For an eco-friendly hotel complete with organic breakfast, try  Oslo Guldsmeden .

Well-known as being one of the friendliest cities in the world, Dublin is a great European city breaks for solo travellers. While its cosy pubs, the madness of Temple Bar and abundance of Guinness certainly live up to the hype, Dublin is so much more than its clichés. Georgian townhouses, beautiful churches and world-renowned museums proudly exhibiting Irish history are all waiting to be explored, including the Chester Beatty Museum which is home to the oldest surviving copies of all 4 Gospels. For solo travellers, you can find out “what’s the craic?” just by chatting to locals.

Obviously, the pubs are well worth a visit too. The Dawson Lounge is the smallest pub in Dublin, while the Brazen Club is the city’s oldest. So, whether you’re more James Joyce or Jameson Distillery (or a bit of both), there’s somewhere friendly and unique for you to whet your whistle in Dublin.

For a super-stylish place to stay, the marble bathrooms and boutique furnishings of Dylan Hotel are an obvious choice. Brooks Hotel has its own exclusive cinema and private whiskey tasting, while the Merrion Hotel is a luxurious and centrally located, making it ideal to walk home to after one too many.

If any of these solo city breaks take your fancy…

13 Perfect Weekend Trips for Solo Female Travelers

06/16/2023 by Kristin Addis 7 Comments

Looking for a solo weekend getaway that’s easy to reach, easy to love, and easy to navigate? Are you hoping for plenty of things to do that are enjoyable if you’re solo, but also might introduce you to local people? The following are a few of my favorite weekend getaways for solo female travelers, mostly in the western USA:

Table of Contents

1. Maui, Hawaii

weekend trips for solo female travelers hawaii

While Maui is more of a ‘long weekend’ option, the island has so much natural beauty and myriad of activities, it’s worth the effort to get to. Start with an afternoon sunbathing anywhere on Maui’s 30 miles of beach, then try an ocean activity like surfing lessons , snorkeling , or windsurfing. Explore the coves and tide pools at Kihei Beach or the natural pool surrounded by a lava rock wall at Launiupoko Beach Park in West Maui. Browse local surf shops in small towns like Lahaina and Kihei, and stop for shave ice as often as you can.

Go ziplining high above the island’s incredible terrain, or take a whale-watching cruise to see migrating humpback whales. Mountain bike down a volcano, learn about Hawaii’s marine environment on a kayak, canoe, or snorkeling eco-tour, or drive the breathtaking Road to Hana . At the end of the day, enjoy a delicious seafood dinner and the beautiful island sunset. Maui is truly the perfect destination for a simultaneously exciting and restful solo getaway. Read more here for the best things to do as a solo female traveler in Maui.

Stay: Airbnb offers this charming studio up in the mountains , or you could stay at this luxury boutique B&B . Here’s a list of our recommended boutique hotels .

Getting there: You can fly directly to Maui’s major airport, Kahului Airport, or into Oahu’s Honolulu International Airport and then take a 30-minute flight to Maui. Rent a car so that you can easily cruise around the island!

2. Boise, Idaho

idaho road trip

Boise is so unexpectedly cool, I was blown away by all there is to do and see there. Plus, it’s so friendly, so as a solo traveler I enjoy myself there. First, head downtown to Freak Alley for some seriously cool street art. Just around the corner, to places with delicious eats, are Guru Donuts, which has vegan options, and Lemon Tree Co. for some delicious sandwiches and salads. For sunset, head out to Camel’s Back Park or even out to Bogus Basin for an even better view.

If you’re keen, the drive between Boise and Stanley , just a few hours away, is stunning and Stanley is an adorable little town. For outdoorsy types, it’s worth heading out for some beautiful hikes in the Sawtooth Mountains and soaking in the hot springs on the way. You can read more about the hot springs here .

Stay: The Modern Hotel downtown is walking distance from most of the things mentioned above, and is a funky, comfortable place to stay.

Getting there: Boise Airport is easy to fly into, with several rental car options right near baggage claim. If you do decide to head out and explore the surroundings, always keep an eye out for deer!

3. Seattle, Washington

weekend trips for solo female travelers Seattle

One of the go-to destinations of the Pacific Northwest, Seattle has both a beautiful waterfront area as well as a great downtown feel, complete with skyscrapers and classy hotels. A proper weekend in Seattle involves some exploring of both. Start by taking a harbor cruise to get a great tour of the whole city from the water. Then, work your way inland by stopping at Pike Place Market, a huge indoor-outdoor market full of flower booths, fresh fish stalls, and delicious lunch spots which is an essential part of Seattle’s culture and character. (Interestingly enough, the very first Starbucks was born here!) After you’ve had your foodie fix, spend some time walking around downtown, which is full of cool shops, cafes, bars, and even a few street musicians! Or, catch a Mariners’ baseball game at T-Mobile Park if you want to spend a low-key afternoon like a local.

Want to take in a great view of the city? Hang out at Kerry Park, a hilltop spot in the Queen Anne neighborhood on the west side of downtown. For even better views, head up to the top of the Space Needle and look down through the rotating glass-bottom floor more than 500 feet above the ground. While you’re in this area (referred to as Seattle Center), pay a visit to the Museum of Pop Culture and then to Chihuly Garden and Glass, an exhibit of glass art installations set inside a botanical garden. Before you leave, be sure to eat some delicious fresh seafood at any of Seattle’s great restaurants

Stay: This stylish studio on Airbnb would make a great solo-weekend home. The modern and centrally located Motif Seattle is also a great option for taking on the city.

Getting there: Fly into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and rent a car to get you to and from the city. While much of Seattle is walkable, you might need the car to get you to a few destinations a bit more spread out from the city center.

4. Bend, Oregon

weekend trips for solo female travelers Oregon

The Northwest town of Bend, Oregon is a small slice of paradise for anyone who loves the great outdoors. Referred to as “the mountain town that has it all,” there is no shortage of wonderful experiences in Bend. For example, the nearby Deschutes River offers a plethora of river activities like canoeing , kayaking , stand-up paddle boarding, and tubing. You can even go white water rafting, which is a great way to meet other travelers and adventure junkies! Bend is also home to a 65-mile span of forest running trails called the Bend Urban Trail System. When it snows, Mt. Bachelor has the driest powder in the Northwest for skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing . And believe it or not, Central Oregon’s temperate climate ensures that the hiking and biking in Bend is great year-round. Other activities in Bend include taking a helicopter aerial tour of the region (or take a 66-mile road trip ) and hanging out in the Old Mill District, two old lumber mills turned into the city’s hub for shopping and dining.

What’s more, Bend has been nicknamed “Beer Town USA” for its huge number of breweries. (In fact, Bend is home to more breweries per-capita than any other city in Oregon, third in the USA!) If you want to make a go at trying all 18 of them, embark on the Bend Ale Trail Beer Tour, where you collect stamps from each brewery you visit in a quest to win cool souvenirs from the Bend Visitor Center. Or, hop aboard the Bend Brew Bus for a guided tour of some of the best spots in Bend, complete with tastings and appetizers.

Stay: Airbnb offers stays like this cozy private room and this riverfront condo . Or, the beautiful Riverhouse on the Deschutes is cozy, spacious, and even pet-friendly.

Getting there: Fly into Redmond Municipal Airport and rent a car to drive the 20 miles south down Highway 97 to Bend.

5. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

weekend trips for solo female travelers Colorado

If you’re looking for a peaceful solo weekend in nature, consider Rocky Mountain National Park . The wildlife like to come out in the spring. If you visit in the summer, you’ll have excellent hiking to various lakes, camping and mountain-biking. The crowds will be smaller in the fall, and in the winter, you can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice fishing. There are all sorts of terrains, suitable for any experience level, and the views are truly rejuvenating!

You’ll want to make the visitor’s center your first stop because you can pick up hiking trail maps, learn about the area and plan the rest of your stay accordingly. If you decide to roadtrip here through part of Colorado to get to the national park, the Trail Ride Road will take you right through, connecting the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake. Be sure to bring a jacket no matter what time of year you visit, as well as binoculars, hiking shoes and a travel pack.

Stay: In Estes Park you could stay at this adventure hostel , or a Mongolian Mountain Yurt . In Grand Lake, there are some campgrounds or the Grand Lake Lodge .

Getting there: Fly to Denver International Airport and rent a car to Estes Park (an hour and a half away) or Grand Lake (three hours). You don’t have to drive through the entire park to experience its full beauty.

6. Santa Barbara, California

weekend trips for solo female travelers California

Often referred to as the American Riviera, Santa Barbara has so much to offer a female solo traveler. From the trendy Funk Zone neighborhood and shopping on State Street to hanging out on the beautiful beaches and strolling down the pier, there are countless things to do in SB . Try one of the hikes up in the mountains, like 7 Falls or Lizard’s Mouth, or go up to the hilltop ruins of Knapp’s Castle to watch a colorful sunset.

If you love history, head uptown to check out the Santa Barbara Mission, or climb to the top of the courthouse’s bell tower for a fantastic 360-degree view of the entire city. For a slow afternoon, rent a bike and cruise around the downtown and waterfront areas for fantastic scenery and a great atmosphere. You could even consider spending a Saturday morning exploring the farmers’ market two blocks off State Street! Regardless of your choice of activities, you are bound to have a great solo weekend in Santa Barbara .

Stay: The Wayfarer and Hotel Santa Barbara are both great options if you want to stay in the heart of the city. Or, check out this Mission Canyon studio up in the hills or this downtown cottage , both available on Airbnb. If you’d like to camp, El Capitán State Beach , located 20 miles outside downtown, is a great option.

Getting there: The Santa Barbara Airport is small and easy to navigate. Rent a car and you’ll be set for the weekend!

More of California’s hidden places here:

7. Capitola, California

weekend trips for solo female travelers California

Nestled six miles east of Santa Cruz lies the quaint, sleepy beach town of Capitola. Its friendliness and charm make it a perfect destination for a girl’s solo weekend trip . The town is home to both the Capitola Art and Wine Festival and the Capitola Beach Festival, taking place in mid- to late September.

Hang out on the wide stretch of beach, take a surf lesson, or rent a stand-up paddleboard. When you get hungry, grab a massive slice of pizza from Pizza My Heart, a hole in the wall which makes such delicious pizza that it led to a chain of 24 other locations throughout California. The downtown area of Capitola, called Capitola Village, offers tons of unique shops and restaurants to explore. The Capitola Historical Museum even offers free walking tours around town. Once you’ve done all you wanted to do in Capitola, take a day trip to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. This classic pier carnival has been around since 1907, offering plenty of rides, games, and delicious fair food. Sometimes the Boardwalk even offers free movies or concerts on the beach

Stay: Spend a relaxing weekend in this private room beach home Airbnb, or stay closer to the beach at the charming Capitola Hotel .

Getting there: The nearest airport is Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport. From there, rent a car and drive the 35 miles down CA-17 South to Capitola.

8. San Diego, California

weekend trips for solo female travelers San Diego

San Diego is special in that it has a unique way of combining city life with Southern California beach life. There aren’t too many places where you can have both skyscrapers and wide spans of ocean! Because of this great pairing, San Diego is just packed with fun things to do. Whether you choose to explore the historic Old Town area, catch a Padres baseball game at Petco Park, or simply lay on the beach and soak up the sun, it is tough to get bored in San Diego.

One must-do: take a trolley to the Gaslamp Quarter and go on a haunted walking tour . This 16.5-block area at the heart of downtown is often referred to as San Diego’s “urban playground” for its abundance of dining and nightlife (read our tips for staying safe ). Also, be sure to set aside a few hours to explore the lush grounds of Balboa Park , full of gardens, museums, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo . Go shopping downtown at Seaport Village (14 acres of waterfront retail therapy), or grab some snacks and head to La Jolla Cove for a picnic, a kayak through the caves , or a picturesque afternoon at the beach!

Stay: This unique apartment in Little Italy would be a great home for the weekend. Or, check out the Pendry San Diego for a glamorous city stay.

Getting there: Flying into San Diego International Airport is super convenient. Rent a car and you’re ready to go!

9. San Francisco, California

Bay bridge baker beach

San Francisco is one of the most well-known cities on the entire West Coast, and for good reason. This bustling “City by the Bay” is full of diversity and excitement, and promises any solo traveler a weekend full of unique experiences. Start by checking out the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park , and explore the park’s different gardens while you’re there. Adjacent to the park lies the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood which maintains its historical 1960s hippie vibes and is full of cool restaurants and bars, record shops, and vintage shopping. Check out the incredible architecture at the Palace of Fine Arts, and then explore the Presidio, a 1,500-acre national park. For a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge , head to Baker Beach (on the west side of the Presidio) where you’ll also have beautiful scenery of South Bay. You can also go on a bay cruise and visit Alcatraz .

Drive down the crazy twists and turns of the world-famous Lombard Street, then head to the top of Coit Tower in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood for beautiful views of the city. If you’re looking for that classic downtown feel, spend some time shopping in Union Square. If you plan your SF trip accordingly, you can catch a Giants baseball game at Oracle Park or even attend the yearly Outside Lands Music and Arts festival in early August!

Stay: Airbnb offers some fun, affordable options. For example, this chic suite less than two blocks away from the Golden Gate Park, and this charming guest house a block away from Dolores Park. While a hotel in SF is more expensive, places like the Grand Hyatt San Francisco offer a glamorous city experience.

Getting there: Fly into San Francisco International Airport and take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) from the airport into the city. Use Muni, the bus and metro system, as well as San Francisco’s famous cable cars to get around the city so that you don’t have to rent a car and drive in the crazy city traffic. If there is somewhere that you simply can’t reach with public transportation, taxis are readily available throughout the city.

10. Big Sur, California

mcway falls

25 miles south of the city of Carmel, Big Sur is where waterfalls and seaside cliffs meet redwoods and mountains. Big Sur is home to five state parks, two state nature reserves, and Los Padres National Forest, so there is no shortage of incredible sights and outdoor activities. Perhaps start a road trip with Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, which has seven different hiking trails leading to coves, waterfalls, creeks, and forests. Pfeiffer Beach is home to purple-tinted sand, tide pools, and the famous Keyhole Arch, which is breathtaking at sunset when the light shines through it. Explore the groves and meadows of Andrew Molera State Park by foot, bike, or even horseback, then, go for a surf at the park’s beach, which is rumored to be one of Big Sur’s best surf spots.

Check out McWay Falls, an 80-foot waterfall onto a small beach with bright teal waters, or drive down the coast along the scenic Highway 1. Go beachcombing for sand dollars at the aptly-named Sand Dollar Beach, and follow its short trail up to the bluffs to look for migrating whales. Be sure to see Bixby Creek Bridge , a 260-foot high and 700-foot long bridge stretching between two rugged hilltops high above the coastline. Finally, when all of your adventuring through mountains, forests, oceans, beaches, creeks, rivers, and waterfalls is done for the day, retire to a campsite among tall redwoods or overlooking the Pacific Ocean to rest for another day of exploring.

Stay: One great campsite is the Fernwood Resort along the Big Sur River. It offers several different options for camping, including traditional camping, RV camping, cabins, and even “glamping”! Fernwood also provides access to a variety of beach, redwood, and river hiking trails. Or, for something more rustic, stay at Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn , which dates back to the 1930s.

Getting there: If you plan on flying to Big Sur, the nearest airport is Monterey Regional Airport. You’ll have to rent a car and drive down Highway 1 until you reach the part of Big Sur you wish to visit.

11. New Orleans, Louisiana

weekend trips for solo female travelers New Orleans

NOLA is special because it feels like a piece of the past, complete with streetcars and an architectural style that you won’t find anywhere else. New Orleans offers all kinds of things to do (here’s our NOLA itinerary ), from trying incredible French-Creole or vegan cuisine to soaking in the city’s history and culture. Start with one of New Orleans’s many museums, like the New Orleans Jazz Museum or the Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes and Culture (which includes an interactive Mardi Gras costume closet). For another fun solo experience authentic to New Orleans , you can get your tarot cards read !

Take a walking tour of some of the historic plantations around New Orleans, like Whitney and Oak Alley . Then, spend time shopping and wandering through the French Quarter , where you can also try the famous beignets and a cafe au lait at Café du Monde, which has been in New Orleans since 1862. Check out the French Market, America’s largest and oldest open-air market, to browse the work of dozens of artisans. Or, explore the quirky, artistic Bywater District , where you can rent a bike and take a ride along the Mississippi through Crescent Park. End the day by listening to live music on Frenchmen Street (be sure to read our recommended packing list for what to wear).

Stay: This charming Airbnb , located only a half-block from the French Quarter, would make a great home base for a weekend in New Orleans. Or, try the beautiful (and affordable) International House Hotel less than a mile from the French Quarter for that classic New Orleans feel. Alternatively, check out our list of recommended boutique hotels .

Getting there: Fly into Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, then take the airport shuttle to downtown, uptown, or the French Quarter. Once you’re in the city, it is easy to get around by foot, bike, or streetcar, so you won’t need to rent a car for the weekend.

12. Islamorada, Florida

islamorada indian key islamorada things to do, florida keys one-week itinerary

If you’re looking for a laid-back weekend in the sun, head to Islamorada. The Village of Islands is a beautiful part of the Florida Keys. It’s located partway between Key Largo and Key West , and is a perfect balance between touristy and peaceful. The free transportation in electric vehicles makes the village easy to explore, and the waters are warm and gorgeous. There’s spectacular snorkeling where you’ll feel like you’re in an aquarium, and you can walk through the Indian Key ghost town. There are several state parks, or you could enjoy the outdoors with activities like eco-tours, fishing, boating, and feeding the tarpon at Robbie’s marina.

Another reason why Islamorada is the perfect weekend getaway is you are so close to the other Florida Keys. If you happen to discover all that Islamorada has to offer, you can explore Marathon and even venture to see the deer at Big Pine . The Overseas Highway will take you from key to key, and as long as you start or end in Islamorada, you can use the village’s free transportation.

Stay: The Sunset Inn is centrally located to all that Islamorada has to discover, has a pool and offers fishing charters. Or the Pelican Cove Resort and Marina has complimentary kayak and paddleboard rentals, a private beach and a saltwater lagoon!

Getting there: fly to Marathon and take the free Islamorada transportation to your hotel, or fly to Miami and take a Flixbus to Islamorada. Once you’re there, you can use the free transportation to get around, or if you’ve driven, you can just use your car!

weekend trips for solo female travelers Chicago

Chicago is a very enriching, and also affordable city for a weekend vacation. As with many other U.S. cities, there is a relatively high crime rate, so be sure to check out these safety tips from a local before you go. The weather in Chicago can also be somewhat unpleasant at times, but you can still visit at any time of year and have a full schedule if you know what you want to do and pack accordingly (read our article on the best time of year to visit Chicago ).

You can kayak in the Chicago River, go on food tours, enjoy beaches on Lake Michigan, walk through the zoo, go biking on 606, and of course get a selfie at the Bean, or any number of other year-round things to do . Some free activities include volunteering at a community garden, strolling through the streets, visiting museums, go to a summer street festival, and learning about sustainability.

Stay: This hostel at Lincoln Park (a charming area) includes breakfast, or you could stay at an Airbnb in LGBTQ+ friendly Lakeview , but there are several neighborhoods worth exploring , especially if you are visiting Chicago for a particular vibe.

Getting there: Fly into Midway and then hop on the Orange Line L to get downtown. The L line is the best way to get around the city once you get there.

Would love to see more posts like this but for other parts of the country. The west coast isn’t really a destination for a weekend due to the distance for me.

How about one focused on the midwest, one for the east coast and one for the south?

07/04/2019 at 3:55 pm

Um, way to be west coast biased? East Coast cities would make great solo travel destinations! NYC, Boston, Philly, DC, Nashville, and I’m sure more. Chicago and St Louis area great mid-west cities as well.

Kristin says

07/07/2019 at 9:13 am

LOL it’s where I’m from. I haven’t been to most of the cities you listed but am working on it.

07/11/2019 at 9:25 pm

Since people brought up the other parts of the US: 1. Weekend trips for the East Coast: Myrtle Beach, SC to Wilmington, NC (Grand Strand) for nice sandy, affordable beaches with warm water or Charleston, SC/Savannah, GA for more culture and history (plus some nice beaches too, some more exclusive and in the case of near Savannah, less commercialized and more natural and raw). If want to make it a four day weekend and fly for those in the Northeast, add Florida in there. Kristin’s been to Ft. Myers, can also try the other coast like Palm Beach. For those living in the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast, there is Kristin’s favorite of Cape Cod (I would through Boston in there), but also NYC, Jersey Shore, Washington D.C. (four day weekend for sure). Lastly, you have the Appalachian Trail accessible within a weekend drive to anywhere in the East (why I didn’t add VT/NH/ME specifically) for the mountain experience.

2. Weekend trips Midwest: Also, could reach the Appalachian Trail somewhere within a day or two drive. Or you have some favorites from Kristin’s past lists of Minneapolis (can’t forget St. Paul), Bayfield, WI (See 15 Best Places..). WI and MN are among my favs in the Midwest. Chicago-Lake Michigan, or outdoorsy fun in the Ozarks of MO/AR. For those into country music, Nashville. I really enjoyed Pittsburgh a lot too and Niagara Falls (midwest-east?, depending on who you ask!).

And the US is so big, it can go on and on with hundreds of off the beaten path places I’ve been. Hope one day Kristin can visit all 50 states. Each one has got special things to offer.

Lastly, for those who take road trips, if you have more like a week, try experiencing at least a good portion if not all of historical Route 66 from Los Angeles to Chicago. It goes through many interesting places and cities like St. Louis, the Ozarks, Albuquerque, Flagstaff too. For us Easterners, there is US Highway 1, but to go from Key West to Fort Kent, ME would take a month and some of this route is boring, so don’t suggest doing that! 🙂 But going to Key West is cool. I have the “mile marker 0” of US Highway 1 in an old photo album.

1. Ljubljana, Slovenia

Bite-sized, easy-going and decent value, Ljubljana is the perfect place to dip your toe into solo travel. Get your bearings by wandering along the river that weaves through the city centre, the pretty streets either side lined with coffee shops and restaurants, before heading up to the hilltop castle where you’ll get views of a snow-capped Alps on a clear day. 2. Berlin, Germany

For a city of its size, Berlin is surprisingly approachable. The lifestyle here is laid-back, with a focus on having a good time and accepting all comers. This makes it the perfect destination for solo travellers. An organised tour is an excellent way to meet new people, and there’s something for all persuasions here — from pub crawls and the city’s world-famous nightlife to curator-led walks through its art galleries. The friendly neighbourhood of Prenzlauer Berg is a fine spot to base yourself, with decent markets at the weekends and more restaurants and bars than you can try in a year’s worth of short breaks.

3. San Sebastian, Spain

If you like food, you’re going to love San Sebastian. The northern Spanish city is the birthplace of pintxos, small snacks like tapas that range from plates of guindilla peppers in neighbourhood bars to dishes that look like works of art in Michelin-starred restaurants. Book a pinxto tour on your first evening here, to understand something of its culture and to team up with new travel pals for the rest of your stay. The old town and neighbouring Centro are fine spots for a stroll, dipping in and out of churches, squares and small museums. On a warm day be sure to spend time on the beach, too — La Concha is a lovely sweep of sand right next to the city.

Don’t miss Catching the funicular up Monte Igueldo for fantastic views of San Sebastian curving around the bay.

Dublin (Getty Images)

4. Dublin, Ireland

Famously one of the most sociable cities in Europe, Dublin is an easy destination in which to make friends for the weekend. It’s also home to several boutique hostels, if you want community spirit without having to slum it. Walking tours tend to be of a very high standard here, and you should look to join one early on in your stay — a literary pub tour is a good choice, allowing you to enjoy a few drinks with new pals while learning about the city’s cultural pedigree. If you need some time alone, the Dublin Writers Museum and Trinity Library are places to reflect — and possibly have some of that literary inspiration rub off on you.

Don’t miss Pre-booking a tour of the Guinness Storehouse and Jameson Distillery, to skip the queues.

Hop on the Eurostar in London and four hours later you’ll be in the heart of the Dutch capital. With its manageable size and relaxed pace of life, Amsterdam is a terrific option for a solo adventure; you’ll also find locals and tourists alike keen to chat, whether propping up the bar of a brown café or browsing local produce in a market. Top of your to-do list should be a boat tour through the canals to get your bearings, and a visit to the Rijksmuseum to ogle Rembrandts and Van Goghs. More offbeat attractions abound, too, including the Museum Our Lord in the Attic, a secret Catholic church hidden in an old townhouse.

Don’t miss Having lunch at the Hortus cafe in Amsterdam’s beautiful botanical gardens.

6. Krakow, Poland

There are plenty of reasons to consider Krakow for your solo break: it’s home to some of Europe’s most beautiful architecture; its atmospheric streets seem to echo with centuries of history; it has a lively cultural calendar; and, not least, it offers great value. A guided walk of its Unesco-listed Old Town and the Jewish Quarter will help you form an immediate impression of the city and put you in touch with other visitors over your stay. There’s lots of scope for day tours, too, including excursions to the Wieliczka Salt Mine and the Tatra Mountains.

Don’t miss Exploring Krakow’s Wawel Castle, the world’s first World Heritage site.

7. Lisbon, Portugal

That it’s home to the custard tart (pastel del nata) is reason enough to visit Lisbon . You’ll find the originals at Pasteis de Belem, a bakery next to the striking, medieval Jeronimos Monastery. Suitably inspired, a cooking class is a great choice for solo travellers, and a variety is offered across the city from pastel del nata workshops to full-day experiences including market visits and wine tasting. You should leave time to explore the cobbled lanes of the Alfama and Barrio Alto districts, with no plan but to see where the mood takes you.

Don’t miss Taking in the view from one of Lisbon’s many hilltop miradouros (viewpoints); start with the Miradouro das Portas do Sol.

The Duomo, Milan (Alamy)

8. Milan, Italy

One of the most surprisingly overlooked European destinations for a city break, Italy’s fashion and design capital has more than enough to keep you entertained over a weekend — whether you want to stare at da Vinci’s The Last Supper or designer shoes in the boutiques of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Milan is also an eminently walkable city, with an excellent public transport system, meaning you can zip between attractions without the slightest bother. Don’t miss the white-marble Duomo, 600 years in the making; the modern art gallery Fondazione Prada; and a performance at the world-renowned Scala opera house.

Don’t miss Getting up close and personal with the Duomo’s gargoyles by booking a walk along the cathedral’s roof.

Sodermalm in Stockholm (Alamy)

9. Stockholm, Sweden

Making regular appearances on “most liveable city” lists, Stockholm is a beautifully chilled destination for your solo tour. Strung across 14 islands on the Baltic coast, it’s also just plain beautiful. Start your break by wandering the cobbled streets of Gamla Stan (“old town”), pottering in and out the colourful medieval buildings that now contain shops, cafés and restaurants. To take the more modern pulse of the city, Sodermalm is a good bet; it’s here you’ll find some of Stockholm’s most interesting indie shops, markets and nightlife. Wherever you end up, you’ll want to indulge in the Swedish custom of fika (coffee, cake and chat) in a local café.

Don’t miss Roaming the open-air museum of Skansen, and meeting elks and bears along the way.

Street art in Bristol (Alamy)

10. Bristol, England

With a calendar of events to rival any city’s in the UK, Bristol is a lively place to dive into for a few days. Check local websites to see what’s going on while you’re there — there are regular music and comedy nights; food and craft markets in converted venues including the Tobacco Factory and Paintworks; and festivals aplenty throughout the year. Once that’s take care of, you’ll want to see what’s on at the harbourside (perhaps stopping to poke around Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s SS Great Britain, which is docked there) and get yourself booked on a walking tour — diverse subjects range from street art to the slave trade.

Don’t miss Learning about the city’s history at the interactive M Shed museum on the harbourside.

Szechenyi thermal baths in Budapest (Alamy)

11. Budapest, Hungary

Divided by the Danube, the two sides of Budapest have very different characters: hilly Buda is its old soul, with medieval streets and incredible views from its terraces. Pest is the young(ish) upstart, with restaurants, bars, markets, street art and indie shops galore. Your first task should be to book a tour of the latter’s fantastic ruin bars (drinking spots in old run-down buildings) — you’ll not only enjoy a few jars and make friends but learn about Budapest’s history too. The next day, recover in one of the city’s many thermal baths. A final bonus for a solo trip: the city is great value.

Don’t miss Picking up breakfast or lunch at the Sunday food market in the city’s original ruin bar, Szimpla Kert.

Setas de Sevilla, Seville (Alamy)

12. Seville, Spain

Charming, sun-baked Seville is here to inject some spark into your weekend. There are stand-out sites to visit, including the Alcazar (royal palace) and the gothic cathedral, but this is a city made, too, for aimless meanders — strolling the maze of alleys and lanes you’ll happen across courtyards dotted with orange trees, impressive baroque mansions and little neighbourhood tapas bars. If you’d like a little more structure, take a walking tour to show you the best of the city’s food and architecture or where to take the most impressive photos. This being southern Spain and the home of flamenco, come nightfall you should book in for a performance — options range from formal dinner dances to standing room only in crowded bars.

Don’t miss Taking in the view from the upper levels of the Setas de Sevilla (“mushrooms of Seville”), the world’s largest wooden structure.

• Best things to do in Seville

13. Reykjavik, Iceland

You’ll want to have a bit of cash in the bank to make the most of a solo trip to the notoriously expensive Icelandic capital, but it’s well worth saving up for. There are ways to stretch your krona, with budget airlines offering reasonably priced flights and a number of decent-value, stylish hostels. Spend your funds booking adventure tours to stonking natural attractions accessible on a day trip from town, with waterfalls, geysirs, volcanoes, cave systems, hot springs, whale watching and glaciers all within reach. In the evening, join a tour of a very different nature, with a night-long runtur (bar crawl) an essential part of Reykjavik ’s cultural scene.

Don’t miss Going for a cold-water swim in the sea then warming up in a hot tub on Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach.

• Best things to do in Reykjavic

14. Antwerp, Belgium

Charming Antwerp is the sort of city that instantly has you planning a return visit. The fact that it’s accessible on the Eurostar (via Brussels) makes planning all the sweeter. Start the love affair on the cobbled streets of its medieval centre, popping in and out of independent stores, pubs and coffee shops, and admiring the architecture on Grote Markt square. The port city has a creative spirit evident in its dynamic culinary scene and in museums such as MAS (culture and art), Fomu (photography) and MoMu (fashion; closed to October). If you’d rather not go it alone, there are tons of organised tours available, from historic walks through the old centre to brewery visits and pub crawls.

Don’t miss A visit to PAKT, an old industrial site now devoted to creative and sustainable living in Antwerp’s Green Quarter.

Solo Vacations: The 29 Best Places to Travel Alone in the U.S.

These destinations make traveling solo easy — and extra fun.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

single traveller weekend breaks

Stephanie Granada is a writer and editor focusing on travel, beauty, home, and health. Her bylines have appeared in Sunset , Outside , Southern Living , Woman's Day , Brit + Co. , National Geographic Traveler , and others.

Traveling alone is all about freedom and independence — freedom to go where you want, when you want, and independence in your ability to visit new places and meet new people without the crutch of a travel companion. It's not for everyone, but those willing to venture off on their own are rewarded with a compromise-free vacation and unforgettable experiences. Exciting things just seem to happen when you're traveling solo.

But where to go? If you're just testing the waters of solo travel, you might want to stay close to home, which is where these U.S. destinations come in handy. Whether you dream of a spa vacation with plenty of time to relax and reset, a trip packed with activities, or a soul-searching expedition, these U.S. destinations cater to the solo traveler, thanks to their ease of transportation and large selection of things to do.

Ready to book your next solo trip? Read on for the best places to travel alone in the U.S.

Naples, Florida

If you have your heart set on a beach vacation, consider Naples, a relatively small community in southwest Florida. There are plenty of ways a solo beach traveler can occupy themselves in Naples. You can check out the beach at Naples Pier, go kayaking in the mangroves , or hit the links at one of the area's 90+ golf courses. If you're looking for an activity that will leave a big grin on your face, book a dolphin watching cruise from Marco Island , just 30 minutes south of Naples. Plus, the city was ranked number one in a recent list of safest places to live the U.S. , thanks to its low crime rates.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston may be a big city, but it can often feel like a small town. Thanks to its walkability, you'll be able to explore the city's historic center on foot and can take the T, the local subway system, across the Charles River to Cambridge. In Boston, you'll find a wellspring of history and culture in museums like the fun Boston Tea Party Museum and the impressive Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , the site of one of the world's most famous art heists.

Boulder, Colorado

Those looking for quiet solo travel in the U.S. can spend their days exploring the mountains and hills surrounding Boulder. Eldorado Canyon State Park is just 20 minutes south of downtown, the approximately two-mile trail up Flagstaff Mountain is just 15 minutes to the west, and the iconic Flatirons (red sandstone formations) are less than 10 minutes away by car. And If you're feeling social, head to Pearl Street Mall , a bustling pedestrian-only street with some of the city's best restaurants, shops, and bars.

Portland, Oregon

Not everyone feels comfortable eating out at a restaurant alone, especially when traveling solo, but Portland makes mealtime a nonissue, thanks to its bustling food cart scene. There are many food cart parks scattered about the city where you can go and peruse a diverse offering of cuisine, from pizza to Senegalese, and enjoy your meal in a atmospheric and fun shared space. Food aside, Portland's reliable transportation, great parks, and community vibe make this city an easy choice for people traveling alone. Between the good meals, you can also enjoy the tranquility of the Japanese Garden or browse the shelves at the famous Powell's Books .

Asheville, North Carolina

Pierre Leclerc Photography/Getty Images

If your perfect vacation includes hiking and biking during the day and gulping down beers with new friends at night, there's arguably no better place than Asheville, a city situated in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Bikers will want to tackle the Blue Ridge Parkway , while hikers can head to the Craggy Pinnacle Trail (an approximately one-mile hike with serious views) or climb Mount Pisgah (2.6 miles round-trip). After a day in the mountains, reward yourself with a beer on the pup-friendly patio at Wicked Weed Brewing .

Sedona, Arizona

Traveling solo may be the only time you're able to truly check out from the grind and relax. That's why spa destinations like Sedona are so perfect for solo travelers. In addition to beautiful scenery, Sedona is packed with spas and wellness offerings. For a full resort experience, book a stay at the Amara Resort and Spa , or test out a few of the city's plentiful day spas: A Spa for You and Sedona's New Day Spa are long-standing favorites.

Charleston, South Carolina

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Art lovers will find themselves in their element in this colorful coastal city in South Carolina. The small city of Charleston is home to over 35 fine art galleries and hosts an Art Walk on the first Friday of every month. If you're hoping to make some art yourself, the French Quarter is sure to inspire, while the city's warm southern hospitality will make you feel right at home. If the temperature is right, you can even take a trip out to Isle of Palms to enjoy some quality time on the beach.

Nashville, Tennessee

If your idea of a dream solo trip is getting out and meeting new people, book a ticket to Nashville and let the city of music connect you to others. The Basement , a live music venue known for its cozy vibes and spacious patio, is a must, as is 3rd and Lindsley . Just don't leave the city without trying the spicy fried chicken at Hattie B's . A trip to Nashville is also a chance to try out one of its best hotels like the classic Hermitage Hotel.

Portland, Maine

This may be the second Portland on the list, but this one has a coastal advantage. From the seaside city you can hop on a ferry or boat charter, or eat your way through the city's best lobster rolls at Luke's Lobster . When you're not out enjoying the water or stuffing your face with deliciously fresh seafood, you can meander in and out of the shops and boutiques at the historic Old Port.

San Francisco, California

When you're traveling solo, public transportation is key (no one wants to foot the bill for a weekend full of Uber rides). That's where cities like San Francisco shine. Between Muni buses, trains, streetcars, and cable cars, you can get to every corner of the city without hopping in a cab. Surrounded by beautiful bay views and offering easy access to experience a Redwood forest in Muir Woods , there are plenty of things to do in and around San Francisco.

Bayfield, Wisconsin

Located on the shores of Lake Superior, and home to quaint B&Bs and beautiful Victorian homes, Bayfield is a warm and welcoming coastal destination and one of the loveliest small towns in the U.S. Solo travelers can roam the intimate downtown or head to the nearby Apostle Islands National Lakeshore , best known for its series of caves that freeze during the winter months.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Just off California's iconic Highway 1 is Carmel-by-the-Sea, a small beach city on the Monterey Peninsula that will capture your heart the moment you see it. Traveling solo is no problem here, as the city offers plenty to do — surfing, sea animals, and a village-style center that feels like it belongs in a storybook. However, solo travelers may feel most at ease exploring the many art galleries like the Carmel Art Association and Bennett Sculpture .

Boise, Idaho

Boise is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors. Solo travelers will find riverside walking and biking trails that run right through town, skiing (in the winter) and hiking (in the summer) at the city's Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area , and easy access to mountain towns like McCall and ski areas like the rapidly growing Tamarack Resort .

Savannah, Georgia

 Marje/ Getty Images

Savannah's welcoming nature makes solo travel a breeze. If you're feeling social, join a haunted pub crawl through town or book an architectural tour . And if you're looking for a quiet escape, rent a bike and explore the history-rich city on two wheels. The best time to visit Savannah is in the fall and winter, when the temperatures are cooler and you can embrace the spooky spirit during Halloween when the city goes all out with on-theme activities .

Hot Springs, Arkansas

As you might guess, Hot Springs, Arkansas, is known for its natural hot springs, which have drawn visitors since the early 1900s. For solo travelers, there's nothing like a serene soak in the natural thermal waters found on the historic Bathhouse Row, followed by a refreshing drink of spring water and a lazy hike through the dense woods at Hot Springs National Park . In addition to the gorgeous scenery of the park, you can also discover it's unique history as a wellness destination .

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole may be home to a world-renowned ski area , mouthwatering cuisine, and high-end galleries, but you'll still find Old West-style bars where cowboys throw back PBRs (check out the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar ). It's the perfect place to throw on a Stetson and dress the part for a night or two. The town itself offers plenty to do when you're not drinking or skiing, like rodeo nights at the Jackson Hole Rodeo and incredible pastries at the James Beard-recognized Persephone Bakery .

Seattle, Washington

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

If you want access to nature without sacrificing big-city amenities, Seattle offers an ideal balance. Spend a couple of days checking out Pike Place Market (don't miss a cup of mac n' cheese from Beecher's ), going to the top of the Space Needle , and visiting the Museum of Pop Culture before hopping aboard a ferry and getting away from it all. From the heart of Seattle, you can take a boat across Elliott Bay to Bainbridge Island and onto Olympic National Park , home to both glacier-capped mountains and 70 miles of wild coastline.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

It's been said that one can hardly be called an architect if they haven't designed something in Minneapolis — the city showcases work from Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron, César Pelli, and Frank Gehry, among others. The city's love of design is also noticeable in the hotel scene, where sophistication meets Midwestern hospitality. So, while it's perfectly acceptable to wander through the city looking up, you don't want to miss a cruise on one of the famous bike paths, which wind past lakes that are perfect for a dip in the summertime.

Salt Lake City, Utah

It may be Utah's largest city, but Salt Lake City doesn't feel like a giant metropolis. Maybe it's the fact that it's surrounded by mountains or the open expanse of the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island State Park to the west. Either way, this friendly city has everything a solo traveler could want — great food (check out Feldman's Deli ), plenty of sun-drenched days, and easy access to both the mountains and water. Among the many things to do in town, you will also have your pick of exciting day trips to nearby state parks, or you can use the city as a launchpad to explore Utah's stunning geology at national parks like Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon .

Fort Collins, Colorado

dlewis33/E+/Getty Images

If you're a beer lover, head to Fort Collins, a Colorado town with plenty of heart and really good beer. Start your tour of the city in the taproom of New Belgium Brewing (the company behind Fat Tire) and follow it with a pint at a few lesser-known breweries — we recommend Zwei Brewing Co. , Maxline Brewing , and Black Bottle Brewery . By the end of the day, you'll have your own beer-loving posse to explore the city with. Solo travelers will love the atmosphere of the downtown area, which is so charming it was the inspiration for Walt Disney when designing Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland.

Austin, Texas

The quickest way to bond with a stranger? Shared musical taste. Austin has plenty of opportunities to bump into fellow music lovers. Stay on or near South Congress Avenue, where trendy properties like the Hotel Magdalena provide the ideal base for visiting the street's iconic venues. Other ‘hoods you can easily get to include East Austin, booming with hipster bars and food trucks; South Lamar with its great shops; and Rainey Street, beloved among college students. Visit March through November to see the bats flying under the Ann W. Richards bridge — it's one of the best things to do in Austin , as is indulging in the city's incredible food.

Islamorada, Florida

Of all the towns in the Florida Keys , Islamorada has the homiest feel. Locals are happy to regale you with tales of family squabbles and fishing exploits at any of the seaside watering holes. For an elevated dining experience, snag a barstool at Chef Michael’s and order the whole lionfish. It's a big but manageable dish, made from an invasive species that Floridians pride themselves on removing from local waters and serving as a tasty dinner instead. When you're done, rest your head at one of the cozy cottages at Moorings Village.

Louisville, Kentucky

Kentucky is known for its hospitality and Louisville for its bourbon , meaning solo travelers can find good friends and good drinks while exploring this Southern city. NuLu is the most happening neighborhood, but Old Louisville is the place to hunker down if you’re a sucker for history and architecture. Downtown offers new hotels and inventive restaurants, while Butchertown and Germantown pair up-and-coming bars and businesses with impressive vintage architecture.

Marfa, Texas

Artists in search of a solitary life have been drawn to Marfa for decades. Today, the population hovers just under 2,000, but there’s enough art, food, and quirk for a city many times that size. El Cosmico offers outstanding glamping and communal spaces, while art houses like the Chinati Foundation keep visitors entertained. Though it's more than three hours from the closest airport, this flatland village offers progressive galleries, mystifying desert skies, and a sparse beauty that makes it one of the best small towns in Texas .

New York, New York

New York City might be full of crowds, but it’s also a welcoming hub for parties of one. There are sleek hotels with bars that draw worldly travelers and locals, some of the best art and shopping in the world, and more food and drink options than you can fit into a month-long trip. If you need help deciding what to do on your visit, take a look at our three-day weekend guide .

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

New Hampshire is one of the safest states in the country — and solo travelers wanting to enjoy that security will find a great home base in Portsmouth. This waterfront town is one of the state's most pedestrian-friendly communities, and with a colonial heritage that dates back to the 1600s, it's fantastic for history buffs. Portsmouth knows its food, as is perhaps best showcased in the dozen oyster farms active offshore in the Great Bay. Sample their best bivalves at The Franklin, an upscale seafood joint run by James Beard-nominated chef Matt Louis.

San Diego, California

San Diego combines the laid-back vibes of SoCal with the multicultural energy of a city located right on the Mexican border. From mild weather and great surfing to vibrant West Coast sunsets, it has lots to offer, making it a great place to spend a few days. Opportunities for hiking and watersports abound, while coastal areas like La Jolla and Del Mar offer a bevy of chic hotels where a solo traveler can catch some oceanside R&R.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Solo travelers in search of spiritual healing should look no further than Santa Fe . Book a night at Ten Thousand Waves, an upscale lodge inspired by Japanese hot spring resorts and decked out with secluded soaking tubs. Downtown, you’ll find historical landmarks, handmade tchotchkes, and restaurants serving delectable Southwestern food. Beyond the adobe architecture and unique attractions, the best thing you can do in Santa Fe is meet its colorful characters.

Washington, D.C.

Museums are best explored alone, and in Washington, D.C. , you have more than 20 to choose from—many of which are free. The District also has a hot food scene, and as a solo diner, you'll have the best shot at getting into the most highly coveted spots. To get far away from D.C.’s political crowds, head to a hip residential neighborhood like Shaw, where you can imbibe at Maxwell Park Wine Bar or catch a show at the Howard Theatre.

The idea of traveling alone can be daunting if you've never taken a solo trip before. Checking in for your outbound flight is easy – it's only when you arrive alone in an unfamiliar destination that it all becomes real. But any initial doubts are fleeting. By the time you've checked into your hotel and hit the streets looking for your first meal, nerves will already be giving way to the thrill of being somewhere new.

A major factor in mastering the art of solo travel is selecting the right destination. Whether you're embarking on an epic multicountry trip or taking an impulsive city break, some places are more suitable for a solo travel experience than others. There are destinations that are naturally suited to solitude, and destinations where travelers are naturally thrown together, making it easy to meet new people.

Best of all, there are solo travel destinations in every corner of the globe, so you can take a solo trip in the depths of winter as easily as you can at the height of summer. Here are 10 sure-fire destinations for lone travelers, organized by interest. Whether you’re into raves, relaxation, hiking or sightseeing, these spots are certain to get your solo travel adventure off on the right foot.

South America: best for solo adventures

With mountains to climb, rivers to raft, ancient ruins to uncover and jungles to explore, South America is the ultimate adventure destination. And the northern hemisphere's winter is South America's summer – the prime time to visit Patagonia and the Andes. From well-trodden paths in Argentina , Chile and Brazil to virgin jungle trails in Ecuador and Colombia , the continent has something for every kind of adventurer. You'll certainly never struggle for company on the trek to Machu Picchu !

Don’t let the continent's size daunt you – with easy border crossings and well-established traveler hubs, South America is ideal for solo overlanding. The well-worn Gringo Trail, which takes in the continent’s most popular destinations, ensures recurring rendezvous with fellow adventurers and ample opportunities to buddy up with travelers heading in the same direction. This, paired with the general warmth of local people and the continent’s premium hostel network, makes solo travel simple.

Epic solo travel experience : Mountain biking down Bolivia ’s infamous Death Road (the name is an exaggeration, in case you were worried) and debriefing with your fellow riders over a few beers afterward.

Pura Taman Saraswati temple in Ubud, Bali

Ubud, Indonesia: best for self-reflection

Whether you loved or loathed Elizabeth Gilbert’s seminal solo travel memoir Eat, Pray, Love , there’s no denying that Bali has a special magic. The island's artistic and spiritual center, Ubud , is where the author found love (and presumably ate and prayed) and it remains a wonderfully laid-back place for solo travelers to relax, reflect and recharge. And Bali is a year-round destination – summer is peak season, but the island has a quieter and calmer charm in winter.

Nestled among emerald rice fields ringed by mist-wrapped mountains, Ubud attracts throngs of solo travelers, meaning no probing glances if you arrive alone at a morning yoga class or ask for a table for one in one of the town’s salubrious vegetarian cafes. To really harness the healing power of Ubud (and for some serious solitude), check yourself into one of the many health retreats that dot the verdant hills around town.

Epic solo travel experience : Getting up super early before the heat climbs to join a holistic class – you find lessons in everything from yoga and meditation, and you can follow up with a massage at a tried and tested spa such as Taksu Spa .

Young people dancing at a Berlin club

Berlin, Germany: best for nightlife

Some say you are more likely to get into Berghain , the most famous nightclub in Berlin , if you arrive alone. Whether or not that’s the case, the rumor demonstrates the German capital’s natural affinity for solo travelers. Legions of solo citybreakers are drawn by Berlin's deserved reputation as one of the friendliest, most inclusive cities in Europe, and by its famous nightlife.

Berlin is one of the best places in Europe to party, offering a collection of colossal clubs and graffiti-spattered beer gardens, but going clubbing is just one of many things to do in Berlin. Thought-provoking history surrounds you from the moment you arrive, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Holocaust Memorial , while quirky cafes, cool boutiques, weekend flea markets and a growing food-truck scene provide more leisurely delights. Berlin is an easy place to wander alone, or join a walking tour for some company.

Epic solo travel experience : Heading out to a bar or nightclub and seeing where the night takes you. For some guided imbibing, join a beer tour with Brewer's Berlin Tours or Berlin Craft Beer Experience .

An elephant passes a safari jeep in Kenya

East Africa: best for a group tour

Have you always dreamed of viewing gorillas in the jungles of Rwanda , meeting a Maasai chief in Kenya  or spotting the “Big Five” in Tanzania , but were daunted by the logistics of tackling East Africa independently? A group tour can simplify the experience of visiting this stunning region of the world, and provide a buffer for the sometimes challenging experiences Africa can throw at first-timers.

East Africa’s tourism infrastructure is well developed and traveling solo in most countries here is quite achievable (particularly in Kenya and Tanzania), but joining a group tour means you can bundle together a string of big game-viewing safaris in multiple countries, without getting hit by additional lone traveler charges or facing the daunting prospect of arranging multiple tours and transport.

Best of all, tours in these bucket-list destinations attract a diverse group of travelers, meaning you’re much less likely to be the only solo traveler sandwiched between canoodling couples, or the only 20-something in a coach full of empty-nesters.

Epic solo travel experience : Catching the great migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya – an almost Lion King -esque parade of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and predators.

View from the walkway on The Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Singapore: best for a solo stopover

With all manner of cultural attractions to explore, a growing collection of hostels and guesthouses, loads of free things to do , and one of the world’s best public transport systems (including excellent airport links), there are few more stress-free solo travel experiences than landing at Singapore 's award-winning Changi airport on a tropical afternoon.

Whether you choose to amble with an audio guide through the Chinatown Heritage Centre , gawp at the otherworldly Gardens by the Bay , plunge into a lavish rooftop pool, or join the hordes feasting in Singapore's hawker food courts , the city is perfectly suited to solo travel. An added bonus is the city's cosmopolitan attitude – locals don't bat an eyelid at the daily influx of international arrivals, and there are few hassles and scams to worry about.

Epic solo travel experience : Checking out the cozy cafes and quirky boutiques in the gentrified 1930s housing estate of Tiong Bahru .

Interior of Rome's Colosseum with a crowd of tourists

Rome, Italy: best for culture

From ancient icons such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum to the towering masterpiece of Renaissance architecture that is St Peter’s Basilica , Rome ’s cityscape is a kaleidoscopic canvas of artistic flair, architectural wonderment and historical marvels. Whether you’re visiting for two days or two months, there's so much to see that there's little risk of becoming bored.

Though English is not as widely spoken as in some European nations, it’s hard to feel lonely among the 14 million other tourists who visit this cultural hub each year. And solo dining means you only have to worry about keeping one palate happy in Rome's fabulous restaurants . But don’t pack too much into your itinerary, as Rome rewards relaxation; mingling with strangers over a glass of vino at sunset is an essential pastime in The Eternal City.

Epic solo travel experience : Visiting St Peter’s Basilica and walking the 7km (4.3 miles) of artwork-filled halls that comprise the Vatican Museums .

A young woman orders food from a food truck in Portland, Oregon.

Portland, Oregon: best city break

One of the USA 's hippest hubs, Portland has all the cultural advantages of a major metropolis, but the down-home intimacy of a small town. This affable attitude reverberates in the town’s urban wineries, microbreweries and coffee shops, where conversation flows quicker than the drinks can be poured. And with its patchwork of small, friendly neighborhoods , it's easy to discover this easy-going city one district at a time.

There’s more to this bastion of counterculture than its love of a good chinwag, with a host of whimsical attractions highlighting its quirky streak, from a museum dedicated to vacuum cleaners to an urban herd of goats. It’s also a cinch to navigate, with good public transport and a popular bike-share scheme. And while Portland is famous for its artisan restaurants, a more sociable – and undeniably more fun – way to dine is at the city’s 500-or-so street food carts.

Epic solo travel experience : Exploring the Alberta Arts District; for the company of fellow art enthusiasts, time your visit to coincide with the Last Thursday art walk .

A group of tourists prepare ingredients during a Thai cooking lesson in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, Thailand: best for food

It's a close-run thing, but for solo foodie travel, one destination stands above all others for travelers who view the world through the prism of a knife and fork. The capital of northern Thailand – and once the center of an independent kingdom – Chiang Mai offers the entire Thai package in one compact location: stellar food, rich culture, ancient ruins, responsible elephant encounters , relaxed nightlife and an easy-going traveler scene that's easy to plug into.

Every time of day is snack time in Chiang Mai. From the city's impressive northern Thai restaurants to its fun-filled and frenetic night markets and hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving the city's famous kow soi soup, the city always has a fork or spoon in hand. What makes Chiang Mai especially suited to solo travelers is its collection of cooking schools – ideal places to meet new people and learn how to cook up a perfect bowl of phat thai , green curry or hot and sour tom yam soup.

Epic solo travel experience : Learning to cook Thai food, of course! Most courses start with a market trip so you can learn to identify local ingredients before you start pounding herbs and spices to make your own curry paste ( Small House Chiang Mai is one recommended school).

Palm trees and colorful houses line a beach in Caye Caulker, Belize

Caye Caulker, Belize: best for an island escape

Enchanting atolls aren’t reserved for honeymooners. Pastel-hued, car-free Caye Caulker has always been a great place for solo travelers thanks to its compact size and easy-going, backpacker-friendly vibe, which draws a relaxed, international crowd in search of a less commercialized slice of paradise.

It’s easy to lose days lounging at The Split , the island’s premier beach, but there are plenty of other activities on offer, from snorkeling and diving on teeming reefs to kayaking to lesser-visited parts of the island while keeping a beady eye out for crocodiles.

Join other travelers at local reggae bars during the afternoon happy hour before sampling Creole-style street food come nightfall. What's arguably the greatest blessing of solo travel? You don’t have to share your shrimp and swordfish dinner!

Epic solo travel experience : Snorkeling or diving in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve , which teems with turtles and small sharks.

Car driving along a sandy beach on Fraser Island, Queensland, Australia

East Coast Australia: best for road-tripping

It would actually be hard to explore the East Coast of Australia alone. So many travelers follow the snaking stretch of road that runs from Sydney to Cairns that solitude is often harder to find than companionship. For travelers in search of natural wonders, excellent infrastructure, abundant tours and group activities and raucous late-night revelry, there are few places to match it.

But it’s not just the good-time vibe that makes this stretch of coastline so spectacular. The classic road trip route is studded with bucket-list attractions, from lolling on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach to rambling through the ancient Daintree Rainforest or blowing bubbles on the Great Barrier Reef . Consider renting a car to explore – the most memorable moments will likely come from interactions with locals in coastal surf towns and one-pub villages in the Outback an hour or two inland from the coast.

Epic solo travel experience : Joining a tour with the East Coast's Indigenous people. Tours led by guides from Aboriginal communities will show you a less-seen side to this well-explored land.

The 15 best places to travel alone

There’s nothing like gallivanting around the globe on your own. These are the best solo travel destinations in the world

John Bills

Nothing sounds quite as liberating as upping sticks and going to see the world, at whatever pace, and for however long you want. The freedom of only being tied to your own schedule is the beauty of travelling solo, and it seems like lots of us are catching on.

Travelling the world alone has only grown in popularity since we came out of pandemic restrictions, with many of us adopting the ‘life’s too short’ mindset, and working up the courage to just book that damn flight. And why shouldn’t we? There’s such an abundance of places to travel solo, some so glorious that you won’t even notice you don’t have company.

Of course, there are some things to consider if you’re jetting off solo. Safety, especially for women travellers , is an important element to factor into your planning, among plenty of other aspects that need weighing up. We’ve done our research: here is our list of the best solo travel destinations in the world.

The best places to travel alone

Iceland

1.  Iceland

The aptly-named ‘land of fire and ice’ is a magnet for nature fanatics, and perfect for those travelling solo. An abundance of caves, caverns, black-sand beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes and geysers should be plenty to keep you occupied, as the landscape and scope of this Nordic island is second to none. The country’s charming capital, Reykjavik , is jam-packed with activity – why not add the Blue Lagoon or the Laugarvatn Fontana to your to-do list for some solo relaxation? And the best thing about Iceland for solo travellers is the safety. The country is named time and time again named  one of the safest places for travellers , thanks to low crime rates and a generally accepting society. It’s definitely one for the bucket list.

East Coast Australia

2.  East Coast Australia

It goes without saying that Australia is absolutely massive. Mahoosive. Ginormous. And while that fact might make it seem daunting, particularly for those of us travelling solo, most of the action is concentrated on the East Coast. There are plenty of classic routes that run from Adelaide to Brisbane and beyond, allowing intrepid explorers to visit a variety of exciting towns that each seem to have their own magnificent ocean view. Australians are famously sociable, too, so meeting new people will never be an issue in this isolated corner of our beautiful planet.

Botswana

3.  Botswana

For those keen to explore the wonders of Africa, Botswana is likely your best bet. The country has a wealth of wildlife to appreciate and observe, with nearly 40 percent of its land area being devoted to national parks. The Okavango Delta, Kalahari Desert and Chobe National Park are world-renowned safari spots, home to everything from giraffes to rhinos. Botswana is also a politically and economically steady nation, and ranks highly on safety indexes for African countries. This, plus the fact that many Botswanans speak excellent English, makes it a great destination to navigate on your solo travels.

Canada

4.  Canada

Canada ’s name is one thrown around most often when it comes to solo travel. The population has a worldwide reputation for their friendliness, and the country has everything you could want from a travel destination. Incredible off-the-grid adventure opportunities like visiting the Rockies, Niagara Falls and Banff National Park offer up plenty to see for intrepid globetrotters. However, Toronto is considered one of the world’s most multicultural cities, and Vancouver is famed for its unique urban design, stunning surroundings and the fact it's on the doorstep to some incredible nature. The weather? Not so great, but the people? Incredible.

Vietnam

5.  Vietnam

Vietnam ’s unique beauty and complicated history make it a compelling travel destination, particularly for those doing so alone. The country has grown into a popular travelling hotspot, and that’s led to a thriving social scene – the well-established tourist route means it should be really easy to meet like-minded travellers to journey alongside. Ha Long Bay, Hanoi and the Ha Giang Loop are three of the nation’s tourist highlights. There are also great transport networks, it’s budget-friendly and full of hostels. What more could you ask for when you’re travelling alone?

Portugal

6.  Portugal

Portugal’s most popular spots frequently pick up travel awards and plaudits alike, and the hype is not without good reason. Lisbon is a backpacker’s dream, while the dreamlike beauty of Porto attracts wide-eyed adventurers from all over the world.  The Algarve is much more than its budget holiday destination suggests, and the rest of the country is packed with stunning sights and spots. This European treasure boasts 800km of coastline, and it’s a particularly surfer-friendly paradise, thanks to the fact it’s perched on the edge of the Atlantic.

📍 Discover the best things to do in Portugal

Chile

7.  Chile

In South America, Chile leads the way in terms of quality of life, and unsurprisingly, lowest crime rate. It’s the perfect destination for people travelling alone thanks to its tight-knit community of backpackers, and, of course, abundance of sights to see. Atacama, the driest desert in the world, is located in the north, while there’s plenty to see in Santiago, the nation’s capital. You won’t go thirsty either, thanks to the fantastic Chilean repertoire of beer and wine. It’s also considered one of the best places in the world for stargazing, thanks to its high altitude.

Slovenia

8.  Slovenia

Small but perfectly formed, Slovenia is a tremendous destination for solo travellers. The old ‘four seasons in a day’ adage is very much alive and well in a place where you can spend the morning skiing in the Alps before heading for a romantic solo sunset on the Adriatic at Piran. The capital, Ljubljana, is the perfect base for exploration, a city of friendly people and social spots an easy bus or train from Slovenia’s famous lakes and less-famous postcard villages. Pro tip: pick up a €15 IZLETka train ticket and get unlimited travel on the weekends.

📍 Discover four Slovenian getaways that are good for the planet

New Zealand

9.  New Zealand

New Zealand is a country that just gets things right. For one, it takes its reputation as one of the safest countries in the world very seriously, meaning travellers can explore in total security. But it isn’t usually safety that brings individual adventurers to New Zealand ; instead, it’s the dazzling landscapes, buzzing towns and cities and convivial people that make NZ the place it is. All of the bigger towns are backpacker paradises filled with history, culture and booze (the great trifecta of backpacking), and the scenery in between is staggering.

Ireland

10.  Ireland

Irish storytelling is world-famous, immortalised in the novels of Joyce, Stoker, Wilde and the rest. Spend an evening in any Dublin pub and you will almost certainly hear a tale for the ages, as locals spin yarns and transport listeners to a world within a world, one pint at a time. The friendly hospitality of the Irish guarantees good conversation, while the stunning breadth of nature here allows for tranquil walks and plenty of room to think, ideal for solo travel. Getting around also couldn’t be easier, as it looks like Irish railway services are about to be amped up .

Japan

11.  Japan

It can often feel as though Japan has been organised with solo travellers in mind. The efficiency of its transport links is as legendary as such things can be, allowing vagabonds all the time in the world to hit up the gripping cities and out-of-this-world scenery. (Check out our Japan rail itinerary if you’re planning to see the place by train.) The Japanese are among the friendliest in the world, the food is incredible and the whole experience is exactly that: an experience. It’s also another country that is consistently ranked the safest destination in the world for solo travellers .

Greek Islands

12.  Greek Islands

No matter your preferred form of travel, a spot of island-hopping in Greece is almost a rite of passage for any traveller. That’s why you’ll meet everyone from excitable backpackers to considered veterans of the road here, each with a different story to tell. The Greek Islands are gorgeous and lush, not to mention packed with excellent food. Each one seems ready to capture your heart and convince you to stay forever and ever. Kefalonia and Corfu are the most popular and thus offer endless social opportunities, while the serenity of Naxos and Icaria will appeal to more introverted explorers.

📍 Discover the best Greek islands

Bhutan

13.  Bhutan

What could be safer than a culture so infused with Buddhism? Bhutan is definitely a place to include on your list should safety be one of your top priorities. The Trans Bhutan Trail reopened in 2022 , meaning travellers can follow in the footsteps of pilgrims and monks who trod the 400km route. The architecture is awe-inspiring, and the tiny country is of course perched on the very edge of the Himalayas, meaning the views are truly unmatched. There’s also tranquil lakes, luscious green valleys and dazzling glaciers to admire. Take heed: you will need some extra cash to splash in Bhutan, as the country has a pretty steep tourist tax .

Croatia

14.  Croatia

Another super-safe solo-friendly destination is this jewel of the Adriatic. Boundless glorious beaches, fascinating mediaeval towns and relatively low prices are what Croatia has become so popular for. The nightlife is another perk of this place – the festival calendar is absolutely jam-packed, and Croatian cities are known for their cheap drinks and plethora of party spots. Eight national parks are also dotted around the country. Like waterfalls? There’s a whopping 90 of them at Plitvice Lakes,  though if you want a dip, head to the smaller falls at Krka National Park instead. Croatia is also an underrated wine producer and, of course, a hotspot for  Game of Thrones  fans.

Singapore

15.  Singapore

The phrase ‘melting pot’ is ridiculously overused, but one place that’s truly worthy of the label is Singapore . The island nation is a glorious meeting of different cuisines and cultures, with a landscape characterised by ancient temples and towering glass skyscrapers. Singapore is also incredibly safe, according to 96 percent of locals who we surveyed last year for our annual list of the world’s best cities . There are plenty of hostels if you’re wanting to meet other travellers. Spend your time soaking up the year-round tropical climate, and make sure to go on a food tour through Singapore’s  markets .

Final Verdict

Compare the best all-inclusive resorts for singles, methodology, best overall : barceló bávaro beach , dominican republic.

Barceló Bávaro Beach

Dozens of activities, multiple pools and dining outlets, and a dedicated singles week offer lots to do for the solo traveler.

Multiple dining outlets and bars, adults-only pool, premium lounge

Array of different activities

Adults-only section offers extra relaxation

Beautiful grounds

Not ideal for a boutique experience

Guests in 2022 have mentioned rooms could use an update

Rapid service can be inconsistent at times

Barceló Bávaro Beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic is a 500-plus-room, adults-only all-inclusive resort located steps from the breathtaking beach for which it is named. Guests particularly enjoy the ample sun beds, relaxing atmosphere, and access to the casino and nightclub located at its sister property within the same complex, Barcelo Palace.

Although the resort attracts honeymooners and couples, its annual Singles Week—typically held each fall—is a full week dedicated to solo travelers looking to socialize , and it’s packed full of group activities like watersports and volleyball, live DJ-ed pool and beach parties, excursions, and more. Year round, find quiet spots for sunbathing or reading a book on the beach or in the resort’s landscaped tropical gardens. Mingle with others at the swimming pool or at included activities ranging from yoga classes to kayaking.

Between Bavaro Beach and Palace, the two resorts boast nine bars, restaurants, pools, an 18-hole golf course, and tennis courts. Booking a Premium Level reservation includes an upgraded room, exclusive lounge access, a bottle of rum, access to the spa’s hydrotherapy area, and 10 percent off spa services.

Best Adults-Only : BodyHoliday , St. Lucia

BodyHoliday Saint Lucia

Experience adults-only, wellness-focused downtime or active adventures in pristine tropical surroundings.

Wellness center, beauty clinic, adventure program, piano bar

All-inclusive rate includes a daily wellness treatment

Resort hosts annual solo traveler retreat

Expert activity instructors

Resort’s hilly locale may be inconvenient for some

Daily wellness treatments included in rate are limited to massage, body wrap, or a facial

As one of the Caribbean’s best all-inclusive spa resorts, set your own immersive, nourishing pace at beachfront BodyHoliday Saint Lucia. Bookings include a complimentary daily massage, facial, or body wrap, as well as access to personal fitness trainers, nutritionists, and other wellness practitioners. Activities like golf, snorkeling and scuba diving, tai chi, and Pilates classes are also included. So are half- or full-day walks, which take in sights like Sulphur Springs (touted as the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano), Diamond Falls, and The Pitons—a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For those looking to connect with others, the resort hosts an annual September Solos retreat. In addition to a personalized schedule of daily spa treatments, the week includes group activities that range from cocktail and dinner parties to land and water sports. Standard Garden View rooms do not incur a single supplement , and ground floor rooms in this category open into a patio in the gardens.

Best Retreat : Lake Austin Spa Resort , Austin , Texas

Lake Austin Spa Resort

Unwind lakefront or at the spa in an intimate setting.

25,000-square-foot spa facility, water taxi service, daily land and water sports activities

Lakeside activities in secluded surroundings

Discounts for longer stays

40 rooms offer an intimate, personal experience

Resort asks guests silence cell phones in public spaces on property

Resort dining ends at 9 p.m.

Changes or cancellations to a reservation may forfeit $1,000 deposit

An all-inclusive overnight experience at Lake Austin Spa Resort in Texas’ Hill Country includes everything from happy hour wine cruises on the lake, artist talks, and culinary demonstrations, to watercraft like stand-up paddleboards and hydro-bikes. Consult its activities calendar on the website to learn about more than a dozen daily activities throughout the week.

Also covered are three meals a day, unlimited smoothies, juices, and coffee, for starters; access to two outdoor pools and a heated indoor pool; and a 25,000-square-foot spa facility.

Situated across 19 secluded lakefront acres, arrive at the resort (by water taxi, if desired) primed to do everything or nothing at all. Depending on your selected room category, its 40 rooms might include a private garden or a private outdoor hot tub. The resort is also pet-friendly.

The wellness resort has been around since the 1940s, and in its prior lives, it was a camp geared towards fishing, then nudism, and finally the rodeo before transforming into the wellness resort today.

Best Clothing Optional : Hedonism II , Negril , Jamaica

 Hedonism II

Shed inhibitions at one of the Caribbean’s top clothing-optional resorts.

Multiple dining and drinking options, playroom, nightly entertainment

Lively pool and beach areas

Themed parties

Land and water activities included

Only certain room categories feature a balcony

Not ideal for those looking for a retreat

Resort could use a refresh

Uninhibited solo travelers will feel at home at Hedonism II in Negril, Jamaica, located along Negril’s famous Seven Mile Beach. The all-inclusive, beachfront resort offers ocean view or garden view rooms and suites and is clothing optional in most areas (restaurants excluded). The resort’s all-inclusive rates cover daytime activities that range from volleyball to tennis, sailing, and scuba diving.

Beginning at 10:30 p.m., the Romping Shop playroom opens for overnight guests. There’s also the Kama Sutra Palace (for desire-centric workshops like Tantra), a spa, and dining and drinking outlets including a steak house, an Italian restaurant with a Jamaican twist, and buffet-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner dining.

Airport transfer service can be arranged for an additional fee, and all gratuities are included in the daily rate.

Best for a Warm Getaway : Spice Island Beach Resort , Grenada

Spice Island Beach Resort

Upscale villa-style accommodations and top-notch service are enjoyed in one of the Caribbean’s most fragrant islands.

Spa, private pool in select rooms

Staff go above and beyond

Some room categories open up directly to the beach

Currently the island nation’s only AAA Five Diamond award recipient

Some rooms and patios situated too close together for privacy

Located on one of the busier parts of the beach

Guests of this 8-acre all-inclusive resort appreciate the attentive staff (who make a point to learn your name), fresh meals accented with herbs from the property’s gardens, and the boutique resort’s understated luxury. Its beachfront location along Grand Anse beach, which stretches for nearly 2 miles of calm, clear waters, certainly helps, too. A booking at Spice Island Resort includes all-day dining, access to its bars (and in-room mini bar), a fitness center, and use of its non-motorized water sports equipment. Spa treatments are also available.

Spice Island Resort in St. George’s, Grenada, features 64 villa-style suites; some open up directly onto the beach, feature a private pool, or include a patio or balcony. Suites also include Molton Brown bath amenities, exposed wood-paneled ceilings in some, and a color palette that mimics Grenada’s colorful natural surroundings.

Also known as a Spice Isle, a tour of a local spice plantation or factory—think nutmeg, cacao, cinnamon—offers a snapshot of the island’s history and culture if you venture out from the resort’s comforts.

Best for a Winter Getaway : Glacier View Lodge , Canada

Cold weather enthusiasts will enjoy a singular opportunity to check into one of the only glacier-front resorts.

Welcome reception, guided glacier tours

2019 redesign with updated, contemporary Scandinavian décor and a refreshed look for its restaurants

Ideal for cold weather enthusiasts in search of a remote respite (and adventure)

Transfer service between Jasper, Banff, and Calgary via the Brewster Express

No room service

Seasonal operations

Dining not included in the rate

Cold weather solace seekers should head to Alberta and check in at pristine Glacier View Lodged, located between Jasper and Banff. The seasonal resort operates between May and September. Though not entirely all-inclusive, guests can choose to book a room only (with views of the mountains or Athabasca Glacier) or opt for the Columbia Icefield Experience, which includes a guided evening tour along the Columbia Icefield Skywalk , and guided morning tour of Athabasca Glacier. All bookings include a welcome reception and beverage.

While dining at its two restaurants is not included in the room rate, an overnight at Canada’s only glacier-front resort, coupled with the guided icefield experiences, offers a unique option for solo exploration.

Best Mediterranean : Club Med Kemer - Turkey

Club Med Kemer

History, culture, and relaxation converge at this coastal all-inclusive resort in Turkey.

Water sports like skiing and snorkeling, day excursions dive into history and culture (for an additional fee), outdoor pool with mountain views

Coastal location also offers mountain views

Outdoor dining

Some travelers mentioned that the property could use an update

The resort's family-oriented marketing might be a turnoff

While Club Med’s Palmiye outpost is often touted as an ideal family-friendly resort, solo travelers cite its hospitable staff and numerous activities as just some of the many reasons to make the journey to this all-inclusive resort on Turkey’s southernly Lycian coast. Included in the nightly rate: all-day outdoor and waterfront dining, an open bar, land and water sports from waterskiing to snorkeling, entertainment like live music and the occasional all-white dress party, and gratuities. Its outdoor swimming pool (there are two) boasts the Taurus Mountains as its backdrop.

For an additional fee, book a cultural excursion and join a small group for an afternoon sail along Kekova Bay, lunch, and visit to a Greco-Roman theater. Or book a half-day historical tour through Antalya’s city center. On certain days during the week, venture into town and browse its markets full of produce, accessories, and traditional textiles.

Don’t let the marketing to couples and families turn you off, as many resorts, including the ones listed, host solo travelers and welcome them. From a domestic stay to a long weekend in the Caribbean or Europe, there’s an all-inclusive resort experience for solo travelers looking to unwind or stay active.

We considered dozens of all-inclusive resorts and filtered for the overall included value of dining and drinking, activities, and other perks. We also considered reviews from prior solo guests, and bonus points were given to resorts that offer dedicated solo traveler programming.

Your first solo holiday

Woman on a solo holiday in Lindos, Greece

It can be difficult to know what to expect when you set off on any holiday, and if you’re a  first-timer on one of our solo holidays,  that’s especially true.

So, below you will find just a few of the many reasons why solo traveller holidays with the award-winning travel service Friendship Travel can offer you an amazing, stress-free experience:

  • You will be travelling with plenty of like-minded people to share your experience and memories with, whether you are hoping to enjoy one of our  cruises ,  walking holidays , city breaks,  ski holidays , or any other kind of getaway.

  • We have tried and tested all of our hotels and resorts for your peace of mind.
  • The people you share your time with on our group holidays for solo travellers are just as keen as you are to meet others and experience new places.
  • Be your own tour guide! Choose what you do and who with, ensuring your holiday is entirely hassle-free. If you would prefer to spend some free time alone relaxing, that’s not a problem. Or if you want to enjoy a small group tour or shore excursions with others, that’s fine too.
  • As a solos holidays specialist, we only offer package holidays which do not include the single supplement that single people are often charged when booking places on family or couple-oriented breaks. Peace and solitude: a woman walking in the sand dunes at Camber Sands, East Sussex.

Put yourself first: the top 15 solo trips in the UK

T here’s something wonderfully liberating about travelling alone and the following trips fulfil all the best aspects of being solo. No compromises to be made, no itineraries discussed; get up when you want, eat what you fancy, do nothing or everything, talk to the friendly person next to you at breakfast, or pop in your headphones and ignore them completely. When I’m travelling alone, I become the best version of myself; the most decisive, the most charming, the most curious. I see more, go further, strike up conversations with people I’ll never meet again, yet always remember. And even after 25 years of travelling, I still get the same feeling of satisfaction when I’m home – a quiet sense of pleasure that I did it all on my own.

1. Brixham, Devon

The Berryhead Hotel – surrounded by six acres of gardens with lovely views across Torbay – is a rare find: a hotel with single rooms that are actually half the price of doubles ( from £88 B&B, berryheadhotel.com ). It’s an easy walk into picturesque Brixham, where the town’s fishing fleet fuels a clutch of excellent restaurants; pull up a seat at the counter at Simply Fish, a family-owned restaurant where diners pick their choice of seafood from the fresh fish counter ( simplyfishrestaurant.co.uk ).

2. Wells-next-the-sea, Norfolk

Wells-next-the-Sea Norfolk, view of the quay in the waterfront area of Wells-next-the-Sea on the north Norfolk coast.2BWN1T8 Wells-next-the-Sea Norfolk, view of the quay in the waterfront area of Wells-next-the-Sea on the north Norfolk coast.

Vast skies, tranquil beaches and a delightfully slow pace; the Norfolk coast is a great choice for a solo trip. Book a Cosy Room at the charming Crown Hotel ( from £180 B&B, crownhotelnorfolk.co.uk ), where a complimentary cream tea is the perfect excuse for a lazy afternoon with a book in the comfortable lounge. On a non-cream tea day, book one of the 11 tables at the Wells Crab House, where the friendly team serve delicious seafood, including single oysters and taster portions of everything from crayfish tails to cockles and rollmops ( wellscrabhouse.co.uk ).

3. Camber Sands, East Sussex

Morning yoga classes come free at the lovely Gallivant ( from £215, thegallivant.co.uk ) – a great way to meet fellow guests – along with a weekly programme of classes, encompassing everything from wine-tasting to garden tours. Combine sociability with solo walks along the great swathe of sandy beach at Camber Sands and pop up to the historic town of Rye for supper at the Fig ( thefigrye.com ), with super-friendly staff and a menu of Ottolenghi-esque small plates.

4. Tenby, South Wales

Pack walking boots for a stay in Tenby, where the Pembrokeshire Coast Path leads out on to spectacular clifftop scenery, with the town itself – famous for its picturesque harbour with pastel-hued houses – a lovely friendly spot to return to and ideal for a solo foray. Stay at Trefloyne Manor ( trefloyne.com ), five minutes’ drive out of town and pop in for a spa treatment at the cute Dovecote spa. Pull up a bar stool at Twelve ( twelvetenby.co.uk ), where the friendly bar staff can advise on the ideal glass to match a trio of tapas-style plates – the perfect amount for one.

5. Bude, Cornwall

Get chatting to locals with a kayaking, paddleboarding or surfing class with Free Wave Surf Academy ( freewavesurfacademy.co.uk ), or mix solo strolls along Summerleaze Beach with a dip into the town’s artisan market (Wednesday to Saturday, 10am-3pm). Settle in for a supper of small plates ideally suited for one at Temple (the roof terrace, overlooking Summerleaze, is a dream on warm evenings) and stay at the Beach at Bude ( from £195 B&B, thebeachatbude.co.uk ), a charming Victorian house with rooms decked out in a New England seaside style – with self-catering apartments also available.

6. Buxton, Derbyshire

Crescent Hotel and Spa Grade II-listed building in Buxton Derbyshire recently refurbished with the help of a grant from heritage lottery fund2H765B6 Crescent Hotel and Spa Grade II-listed building in Buxton Derbyshire recently refurbished with the help of a grant from heritage lottery fund

Fancy a solo spa treat, but don’t want to be marooned in a secluded hotel? The Buxton Crescent Spa ( from £193 B&B, ensanahotels.com ) lies at the heart of the Peak District’s most vibrant town, combining thermal pools – including on the rooftop – with a wide programme of treatments. Beyond the hotel, Buxton is an easily navigable, friendly place; spend an hour browsing the 40,000 secondhand titles in Scrivener’s Books ( scrivenersbooks.co.uk ) before lunch at Noonology, where hearty brunch dishes sit alongside vegan poke bowls and pleasingly indulgent cocktails ( noonology.co.uk ).

7. Hay-on-Wye, Powys

Bookish Hay is ideal for solo travellers; bookshops come with armchairs and assistants who are happy to chat and recommend, there are great walks from the centre of town, and the Granary ( thegranaryhay.co.uk ) is a convivial place for lunch, offering homemade pies, veggie dishes and inventive salads (strawberry and goat’s cheese is particularly good). Atelier Hay is a tranquil bolthole above an art gallery ( from £170, three-night minimum, atelierhay.co.uk ) and if you run out of something to read, the 24-hour open-air Hay Castle Honesty Bookshop ensures you never go to bed without a good book.

8. Ludlow, Shropshire

Surrounded by the rolling hills, Ludlow’s high street is dotted with boutiques, delicatessens and cafés – perfect for a spot of people-watching. A walk along the River Teme gives wonderful views of Ludlow Castle; finish up at the Green Café ( thegreencafe.co.uk ) where small plates of broccoli with melting cheese and orange spice or Ludlow farm steak with green harissa mean you can try two or three dishes without feeling you’ve over ordered. The Cliffe at Dinham ( from £120 B&B, thecliffeatdinham.co.uk ) is a charming restaurant with rooms, 10 minutes’ walk from the centre.

9. Keswick, Cumbria

Who says shepherd’s huts are only for couples? The Mount B&B has a beautiful hut for singles only ( three-night break £240 B&B, themountkeswick.co.uk ), with a woodburning stove and lovely garden views, with the chance to join other guests for breakfasts around the communal dining table in the main house. This is serious walking country, with footpaths from the front door; reward yourself with Mexican-inspired tapas at Es Bar ( esbarltd.co.uk ), with bar seating, dogs welcome and a breezy, chatty atmosphere.

10. Lavenham, Suffolk

England, Suffolk, Lavenham, Swan HotelJ9GBWR England, Suffolk, Lavenham, Swan Hotel

The most picturesque of Suffolk’s historic wool towns, Lavenham has a slow-paced arty feel, with a number of art galleries and boutiques that offer an excellent afternoon’s browsing. Number Ten Wine Bar & Kitchen ( ten-lavenham.co.uk ) is a convivial place for lunch or supper, with giant barrels providing great tables for one, while the Swan at Lavenham has a cocoon-like warmth, with cosy bedrooms beneath original 15th-century beams ( Lavenham rooms are ideal for singles, from £171 room-only, theswanatlavenham.co.uk ), and a boutique spa. Dogs are welcome at both places.

11. Canterbury

Set within the Cathedral grounds, the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge is a unique place to stay, with single, en suite rooms ( from £92 B&B, canterburycathedrallodge.org ), with views straight across to the 1,400-year-old church. The rate includes free entry to the cathedral (usually £15), with the city’s historic streets just outside the door. Don’t miss lunch (or just a shopping spree) at the Goods Shed, a daily farmer’s market and restaurant, serving produce from each of the stalls; two starters (maybe octopus, clams and ’nduja or cheddar and truffle beignets) make a perfect meal for one ( thegoodsshed.co.uk ).

Perfect for a solo jaunt, Citizen M has four breezily hip outposts, where the pod-sized rooms are ideal for one ( from £155, citizenm.com ), and the open-plan bar/lounge/restaurant downstairs is a comfortable place to hang out. Borough Market has a great range of places that offer counter dining; Arabica ( arabicalondon.com ) offers lip-smacking Middle Eastern small plates and super-friendly staff, while Wright Brothers ( thewrightbrothers.co.uk ) is so compact it’s almost rude not to start chatting to the person next to you.

The ShamblesRecently voted as the most picturesque street in Britain, 'The Shambles' is a centre piece of historic York.

With an easily walkable historic centre, boasting both York Minster and a picturesque tangle of pedestrianised streets, York is ideal for a solo weekend break. Book a counter seat at Skosh ( skoshyork.co.uk ), to watch small plates of Orkney crab papads, paratha with whipped aubergine brinjal and Peruvian chocolate tart roll out, and stay at No 1 Guesthouse ( from £138 room-only, guesthousehotels.co.uk ), where the well-stocked pantry means there’s always something to nibble on if you fancy a break from eating alone.

14. Edinburgh

Plan a packed itinerary for a trip to Edinburgh with the Kimpton’s Stay Human concierge, which offers a variety of curated experiences – from city walking tours to coffee tasting or personal shopping – all bookable before you arrive. Book a City Single ( from £252, ihg.com ) and spend an evening at Eleanore, where high stools at communal tables encourage chat between locals and visitors, and the pared-down menu of artfully presented dishes is ideal for a solo dinner ( eleanore.uk ).

15. Bristol

Buzzy and bohemian, Bristol combines West Country warmth with a hip urban feel and a clutch of excellent galleries – from contemporary artworks at the Arnolfini to more than 70 artists, makers and designers at Spike Island ( spikeisland.org.uk ). Book a Broom Cupboard or Shoe Box at the hip Artist’s Residence (from £185, artistresidence.co.uk ) – small rooms with striking artworks that are perfect for one – and bag a seat at the bar at Marmo ( marmo.restaurant ) for their excellent value set lunch (two/three courses £22/25) or a dinner of Italian small plates.

After building up the courage to holiday alone, the punishing sting of a singles’ supplement often added to accommodation and tours is a feeling solo travellers know all too well. Thankfully, unique adventures in the UK and its islands don’t always have to come with a steep price increase when holidaying as a party of one, with perks including travelling light and squeezing into that last spot on the train thrown in for free.

Whether a social break to make new friends on escorted tours or heading out alone for a stay in solitude, there’s something for every single traveller on trips to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. From solo sports to hiking holidays and skills retreats, from historic cities to literary and cultural domestic breaks, going it alone enables you to indulge in your passions – no compromise required.

Here’s  The Independent’s  selection of ideas to help inspire your next lone adventure.

Read more on UK travel :

  • Seven of the best walks in Cornwall
  • Brighton city guide: where to stay, eat, drink and shop in Britain’s iconic seaside town
  • 10 of the most unusual surf stays in the UK

Best for: Golfers

Location: kent, england.

Golf is one of the UK’s most loved individual sports for good reason. Single players of all ages can focus on their swing without distractions, to take on – and hopefully beat – personal records on the course during weekend escapes across the UK.

Solos Holidays  offers a two-night UK golf getaway to the Kent countryside, just outside Maidstone, including two morning tee times for rounds on the 18-hole Garden of England course. Expect to stay and play in the comfort of Delta Hotels by Marriott Tudor Park Country Club’s on-site champion golf course (which also has spa facilities). Prices for the solo sports trip start from £539pp, half board, including a golf-tour leader and a course par of 70.

Best for: Surfing

Location: isle of wight, england.

Surfing , while a very sociable sport, takes individual effort and a laid-back lifestyle to master – ideal for beach bums who enjoy their own company.

Surfs up at Compton Bay on the Isle of Wight’s west coast, an exposed beach with reliable surf and breaks that peak in the winter. The popular spot gets winds from the southeast and northwest and surf schools including  Eddie’s Surf Academy  are on-hand to teach beginners how to get up on the board. In general, the island is well suited to single travellers; hop on the ferry from Yarmouth as a foot passenger for around £15.60.

Where to stay

Tom’s Eco Pods on Tapnell Farm feature a double bed, al-fresco dining and sunset views over West Wight ideal for a party of one after a long day of catching waves. Compton Bay is just a 10-minute drive from the site; Eco pods from £160 a night

Best for: Island hopping

Location: orkney islands, scotland.

Solo travellers to  Scotland  can immerse themselves in the wild solitude of the  Orkney Islands  – although the remarkable environment guarantees you’ll never be far from myriad species of birds and marine life. Sail across to this spectacular archipelago by hopping on the ferry at Aberdeen, Scrabster or Gills Bay.

Intrepid Travel  offers a five-day trip to experience the whisky and Neolithic history of the UK’s northern reaches from £1,450pp. As a group tour, single travellers will share a twin room with someone like-minded and of the same gender – a great opportunity to meet some new friendly faces. The Orkney Islands holiday includes all breakfasts, one lunch, transport, accommodation and activities packaged with a knowledgable local guide.

Best for: Learning a new skill

Location: east sussex, england.

There’s nothing quite like coming home from holiday with a tan, but with the UK’s predictably unpredictable weather, solo trips centred around self-development, learning new skills or mastering a craft can be a safer bet than heading to the beach.

Fire & Wild’s  “Cooking with Fire” experiences include a guided foraging walk, game butchery and a fire skills workshop in an outdoor forest kitchen. Guests are guided through the process of cooking with seasonal ingredients, such as venison and wild mushrooms, from the surrounding land. The five-hour experience in a private woodland in Ringmer costs £225pp and participants will leave familiar with new skills, including back-to-basics cooking over an open fire.

Tiny Cottage in Lewes offers a compact chalet fitted with quirky decor, one bedroom and a garden terrace perfect for relaxing after a day of foraging and fire skills.

Journey coast to coast from Carlisle to Hexham, stopping at Roman ruins and English villages dotted between a range of terrains. The holiday includes all breakfasts, six nights in twin-share accommodation and transport, from £1,130pp.

Best for: Photography

Location: cornwall, england.

For those who love to view the world through a lens, UK photography workshops as a single traveller create the ideal conditions for the perfect shot. Free from distractions and chatter, get up close and personal with wildlife or patiently wait for the best light to pull off a long-exposure shot at your own pace.

Paul David Smith Photography  offers a three-day landscape photography holiday and workshop in Newquay, Cornwall for £495pp. The trip includes all transport, small groups of no more than four and one-to-one photography tuition. Gain experience snapping beaches and seascapes in England’s southernmost county and mine Paul’s advanced knowledge of composition, lighting and editing over a long weekend.

Trewinda Lodge  in Newquay is just a five-minute stroll from the seafront and features coastal decor and single rooms for solo travellers.

Best for: Literary indulgence

Location: lake district, england.

The UK’s rich literary history makes it a hotspot for holidays inspired by the written word. Be it Harry Potter fans searching for platform nine and three-quarters in King’s Cross Station or Shakespeare lovers following his journey from Stratford-upon-Avon to London, stays in idyllic settings dedicated to reading and literature are on the rise.

HF Holidays  now hosts a crime and thrillers staycation in the northern Lake District. Think free-flowing discussions with like-minded readers and expert book club leaders. Spend four nights at Derwent Bank for £629pp, including en-suite accommodation, all meals and a cream tea on arrival day. Bookworms rejoice – book club just got an upgrade...

The latest on the massive solar storm

By Angela Fritz, Elise Hammond and Chris Lau, CNN

Incredible lighthouse picture from Maine

From CNN's Chris Lau

A long-exposure photo shows the aurora borealis over Portland, Maine, on May 10.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Watch the full interview with Williamson here .

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

By CNN's Chris Lau

The northern lights can be seen from Eaton Rapids, Michigan, on May 10.

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle."

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

In Pictures: Auroras light the sky during rare solar storm

From CNN Digital's Photo Team

The northern lights glow in the night sky in Brandenburg, Germany, on May 10.

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun are creating dazzling auroras across the globe .

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

See more photos of the aurora from tonight.

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

Bill Nye the Science Guy speaks to CNN on Friday, May 10.

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

From CNN's Angela Fritz

An infrared satellite image taken around 10:30 p.m. ET.

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour.

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.

Aurora seen in Atlanta around 10:15 p.m. ET.
