Mongolia is home to the majestic mountain sheep with the gorgeous horns: Gobi Argali, Altai Argali and Hangay Argali. It also has an attraction for those preferring ibex hunting: here you can harvest the Siberian Ibex, also known as Altai, and the Gobi ibex. You can also add gazelle and wapiti as an icing on a cake. Perfect hunting organization and amazing trophies make Mongolia a great Asian hunting destination.

Mongolia offers classical spot-and-stalk hunt with moderate physical intensities. You will spend almost the whole day in the field with a break for a simple lunch. 4x4 vehicles are used to get to the foothills within the hunting area. Average hunting heights are from 8,200 to 11,500 feet (2,500 to 3,500 meters). Horses are available in some areas. Average shooting distance is 300-350 yards/meters.

ACCOMMODATION

The camps are strategically based near the hunting ranges to access the hunting area within the shortest time. These are isolated wilderness facilities with very limited access to the outside world. Hunters are accommodated in yurts that are felt tents with a wooden frame. Yurts are much larger than standard tents, they serve as traditional year round living dwelling for nomads in Mongolia. Your yurt will be furnished with spring beds, mattress, bedding, and wood burning stove.

Western Mongolia: provinces Uvs, Uench, Khovd, Altai. Southern Mongolia: Bayankhongor province, Khuree Maral area. The exact hunting grounds are to be determined several weeks prior to the arrival – according to the results of the pre-scouting.

• International Hunting

Our outfitter has led safaris and outdoor expeditions throughout Mongolia for over 50 years. As one of the largest hunting operations in Asia, they maintain their own camps in the best hunting areas. Their guides and interpreters are well trained and will accompany and assist you throughout your hunt.

Altai Argali (Ovis Ammon Ammon) is the largest sheep in the world, and is the ram that dreams are made of when it comes to the Asian argali. There are still decent populations of Altai argali to hunt but the hunts are not as easy as they once were. A true sheep hunter who will exercise a little patience, and be mentally tough and prepared for this hunt can still come away with an outstanding Altay argali.

Hangai Argali - This outstanding ram was formerly called a mid-Altay argali. It is generally bigger than a Gobi, but smaller than the Altai. This sheep is located in the Hangai Mountains of central Mongolia.

Gobi Argali - A true Gobi argali is an outstanding trophy. They are found in the Gobi desert in southern Mongolia. The Gobi Argali is smaller than the Altai however the largest recorded Gobi horns measured 62 inches.

Altai Ibex are found in the Altai Mountains in western Mongolia. The horns of the largest specimen to date measured 53 inches.

Gobi Ibex are found in the famous Gobi Desert. The hunt is in a special area with large concentrations of animals, with success rates approaching 100%. White Gazelles are also found in the same area.

Day 2 Flight to Western Mongolia and transport to the Altai Argali hunting camp. The transportation would involve 2 hour 30 minutes commercial flight and 5-8 hours of overland driving depending on season and camp selection. Ger accommodation at the camp.

Terms and Conditions

1. Group hunters (2-6 persons) will be provided with one local guide each, one interpreter, one vehicle per every 2 (two) hunters or individual horses. 2. Camp accommodation in traditional Mongolian ger based on maximum of 4 persons per ger. Tents & sleeping bags are provided if hunts need flyer camping. 3. Wounding an animal requires imperative finding the game. Otherwise the hunt is considered to be completed and should be paid in full. 4. Accidental shooting of female or baby animals of the indicated species in the pricelist requires penalty charge in the amount of the trophy fee of the same game. 5. Included in the rate: All land transportation, accommodation at the hunting/fishing camp, meals, guide, interpreter, and field care of the trophies. 6. Not included in the rate: Accommodation and meals in Ulaanbaatar, rifle & ammunition; visa fee; extra trophies; Mongolia domestic transportation charges; excess luggage of over 33 pounds per hunter for domestic flights; $550 documentation fee for Government hunting or fishing license; state veterinary certificate & export documentation & rifle permit; $1,650 Mongolian export CITES fee (argali & wolf hunters); insurance and gratuities. 7. Payment: $5,000US ($35,000US for argali hunts, $2000 for non hunting companions) non-refundable deposit should be paid upon reservations. Installment payments of $5000 per/hunt, per/person due by March 1 each year prior to the argali hunt year.  Balance is due 90 days before hunt start date for all bookings. 

8. Cancellations: No name changes allowed on argali bookings. Initial deposits, less $500 administrative charge, are refundable if no USFWS argali import permits were granted to hunter. 50% of initial deposit will be refunded if cancellation was made two years or more before the hunting year. Non hunter companion deposits fully refundable if canceled 90 days before the hunt starts. All other cancellation cases would be non refundable

9. All hunts are strictly fair chase and the species are wild animals roaming on the huge territory.

Travel to Mongolia

You can reach Mongolia through Seoul, Korea, or Beijing, China. Korean Airlines are excellent and going through Seoul avoids extra airline costs, nights, hotels, visas, and gun permits in Beijing. However, if one would like to do tours in Beijing, we can include this in your travel plans. We are not a travel agency, but have extensive experience and partners who will make your trip an extremely smooth one.

Hunting Conditions & Methods

The days at this time are generally nice, however towards the middle of October the mornings and evenings can be cooler. Be prepared with some warm attire. You will be hunting in rocky and hilly country, good hiking boots are important.

The most predominant method of hunting is the spot and stalk method. Therefore good binoculars and a spotting scope is a must. Shots can range anywhere from 100 - 300 yards. The hunting can be done from a 4WD or by horses and on foot, depending on the terrain.

Hunt in Mongolia

Hunt program, arrival to ulaanbaatar.

Clients from the US and Europe book their flights into Ulaanbaatar (capital) flying through Seoul,Korea is the fastest route for Americans and flying through Istanbul or Moscow is the fastest route for Europeans. On arrival to Ulaanbaatar our Company PH and local staff with vehicle will meet you at the airport and assist you with customs-clearance and firearms declaration which will be a short 15-20 minutes procedure followed by a 30 minute drive to your hotel.

You will spend the next day at one of the 5 star hotels in Ulaanbaatar and leave for the hunting area the following day after a good breakfast.

Depending on where you are hunting; you will either travel to the hunting area by a 4×4 comfortable Truck or Jeep or take a domestic/private charter flight and then drive from there, by ground transportation to your hunting camp. (Toyota Land Cruiser type vehicle.)

Travel & accommodations during the hunt

Our base camps are located different parts of the country. Our English-speaking company representative, PH’s will accompany you during your entire trip. Your local hunting guide and a team of camp staff will greet you once you arrive at your hunt camp. For Hangay/Gobi Argali areas depending on road conditions it can take 6-8 hours of travel by car or a private charter flight will take about 2 hours. The camp staff is hard working and friendly people. They’ll help you with anything you may need during your stay.

The hunting camps vary depending on the area you are hunting. Most are well-equipped base camp that is called Yurt.

A hunting camp usually consists of 3 Yurts, A Yurt privately for the hunter and his companions and the rest for camp staff and guides.

For our clients that require a special diet and require special food prepared we can organize this, we recommend that you tell us in advance and we will organize a special menu for you upon request.

Regarding snacks we recommend you to bring as much as possible, the camp will have limited varieties of snacks.  As many as Bottled water is always available.

Sprite, Fanta, Coke, fruit juice, beer & locally imported beverages or any other stuff are also provided upon prior request (by our clients) according to availability.

Hunt & species

For High-Altay Argali hunts, the hunting is done by horseback and stalking OR in some areas by vehicle (instead of horse) and final stalk on foot in the Altay region after driving to a certain point in the concession. We hunt our rams by spot and stalk method and always fair-chase and ethically.

Gobi and Hangay argali hunts are conducted with the use of trucks and stalk on foot.

Spot and stalk hunting is the preferred method of hunting as it allows us to judge the animals with spotting scopes before making the final stalk.

Ibex numbers are very healthy in Mongolia and a very enjoyable hunt that can be easily combined with your Argali hunt.

Gobi Ibex (Capra Sibirica Hagenbecki)

• Gobi Ibex have a brown coat and light patch under its belly and between it’s legs. A male Gobi Ibex is over 3 ft (95-105cm) tall and weighs 150-175pounds (70-80kg).
• Average trophy size: 34-38” in length; max 42”

Altai Ibex (Capra Ibex Sibirica)

• Altai Ibex is the larger of two Ibex in Mongolia and is mostly found in the higher Mountain ranges. A male Ibex has a long hair beard. A male Altai Ibex stands at around 3-3.2ft (105 -110cm) tall and weighs up to 280lb (90-110kg).
• Average trophy size: 37-42” in length; max 45”
• Hunting season for ibex species: July 15- October 15

Gobi Argali (Ovis ammon darwini)

• Coming from the name the Gobi Argali resides at the lower central part of the country and also in the south-eastern Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. This species is normally hunted mostly on foot by glassing the small hills and narrow valleys where the rams live in for safe cover and good pasture. The Terrain is easy where these rams are hunted and the population/trophy quality in our areas are considered the best in the country, limited number of permits available in our exclusive areas.
• Average Gobi Argali size: 46”-50” with 16.5”-18” bases. Max. 52”

Hangai Argali (Ovis ammon ssp)

• These magnificent  sub-species of Argali is located at Khangay Mountains of central Mongolia and generally higher populated with great trophy quality in Bayankhongor province of Mongolia. Hangai argali is smaller than Ovis ammon ammon and larger than Ovis ammon darwini, more or less in the middle both body and trophy wise.
• Average Hangay Argali size: 48-52” with 18+” bases.
• Special note: a Ram between 52’’ up to 55” are of exceptional size and can be found in special occasions and special areas depending on the conditions of the hunt and the area hunted, please consult your outfitter for further details.

High Altai Argali (Ovis ammon ammon)

• The greatest and biggest of all Argali species in the world!
• Body length is 4-6.6 ft/172-180 cm, shoulder height is 4 ft/122 cm, a mature adult Ram weights 400-450 lb and sometimes even more. Altai Argali lives in the entire Altai Mountain range of Mongolia, China and Russia.
• Also known as the rarest Argali in the World due to limited licenses granted, however not limited by population, in fact the highest and healthiest population in the country is of these species.
• Altai Argali have the heaviest horns of all the sheep in the world, weighing 60 to 75 lbs!
• Average Altay Argali Size: 56-57” horn size with 19” to 21” bases can be expected and extraordinary trophies reaching 58”-60” in rare occasions may be found depending on the weather/habitat conditions of that particular season and special planning and luck of the hunt.

• Altay Argali – 150,000-USD – premium area hunt- up to 7 day hunt. (Best time is 01-30 July) or (August 01- September 30)
• Hangay Argali – 105,000-USD – premium area hunt-up to 5 day hunt. (Best time is 01-15 July or 30 August to 30 September)
• Gobi Argali – 95,000-USD – premium area hunt- up to 5 day hunt. (Best time is 01 July to 15 July or 30 august to 30 September.)
• Altay Ibex – $15,500 – premium area hunt
• Gobi Ibex – $15,500 – premium area hunt
• Mongolian Wapiti – $16,000
• White-Tailed gazelle – $6,500

For the professional guiding services and travel fees of professional-Guide Temir or Kursat Ekenler per hunting trip: $10,000

Hunt extras can be paid before or after the trip, estimation can be requested from the outfitter.

Our local guiding teams on all of our premium sheep hunts do pre-scouting.

However; Extensive pre-scouting done by the western master-guide of our company is recommended for the High-Altay Argali hunt to ensure outmost success in the shortest time and best trophy quality.

This service will cost: $10,000 for Altay Sheep hunt.

Observer fees per person for each sheep hunting camp: 3,500-USD

Private charter plane hire: Cessna Caravan 208 or King-Air; this can be pre-organized by the outfitter. Please consult with your outfitter beforehand.

Rates include:

Transfers from and to airports by car, transportation throughout the hunt (including all necessary quality 4 x 4 vehicles), Professional English speaking Guide during the entire hunt, All meals and drinks, accommodation during the hunting trip. All organizational fees and Daily hunting rates, Visa invitation, customs handling, meet- greet services at the airports, gun import permit, area fees & taxes, ground transfers from airport to hotel and airport to hunting areas. All necessary hunting licenses (vet. Cert), temporary hunting certificate, Trophy preparations in the field and dry salting.

Rates exclude:

Gratuities for all working staff and guides, all trophy exportations and delivery, any hunting travel insurance, hotels before or after the hunting trip in UB, Airline ticket fares, Any Hotel Extras (such as phone calls, room service, laundry etc.) Observer fees, extra species according to license and trophy fees, special imported alcoholic beverages, Excess luggage fees. Rent of satellite phone, domestic air charters or domestic commercial flights, ground transportation from different hunting camps on combination hunts.

Sample itinerary program for argali:

Day 1: Arrival to Ulaanbaatar with WH representative/PH and greeted by our Mongolian staff with a private car and Rifle clearance and rest in Shangri-La Hotel first evening.

Altai Argali hunt:

Day 2: Fly to West Altai Region (2,5 hour flight), greeted by local staff (vehicle: Land-cruiser) and directly drive to Base Camp about minimum 2-5 hours maximum depending on area we will be hunting.

Day 3 to 6: Hunt Altay Ram successfully along with Altay ibex if requested because ibex is in the same region. 

Day 7: Fly back to Ulaanbaatar. Spend evening in Shangri-La Hotel. Or directly fly to Hangay Argali or Gobi Argali area from Altay with private charter flight.

Day 8-10: hunt Hangay Argali,

Day 11: drive to Gobi Argali area or fly with private charter to Gobi area.

Normally Hangay area to Gobi area is within 4 to 5 hours driving distance.

Day 12-14: Hunt Gobi Argali.

Day 15-16: have two back-up days for ibex and other hunts.

Day 17: Fly out of UB, return to home.

Note: All 3 Argali’s and ibex can successfully be harvested within 17 days including air travel and ground transportation while during the entire hunting trip Mongolia.

Belize #64 – Butch M.

I had a 50” BARRACUDA make my 10 weight fly reel sound like it was screeching in mortal agony! However, for the rookies or the folks looking for their first bones, the guides had their secret spots. Our guide (Daniel- top notch- but so was Michael and others) had such a spot and he put Joan in the bow, worked on her casting and in 3 casts she had her first bone, followed by 3 more bones in the next 10 minutes. My turn, I caught my 4, and put Joan back in bow to catch her 4, and so we kept trading all morning. Then it got truly hot, and we went trolling for barracuda (using big orange tube lures on our fly rods). Action was non-stop with blinding runs and incredibly vicious strikes. Guides spoke great English, were adept and patient. Joan and I probably each caught around 40 or more bones, and 5 or 6 barracuda. One group of rookies had the trip of lifetime catching a permit apiece and probably 10 or more bones each in their 3 days of fishing. The wives could not stop talking about their snorkeling trips with the Lodge’s dive instructor who is a naturalist who also entertained us all at night with his National Geographic like under water closeup photos taken that day. The ladies had a ball. They simply floated and looked. Dinners were superb, the bar was excellent (watch out for their rum punch!). Several in our group had little or no fly fishing experience but guides taught them enough for them to score on bones and hook them on the sport. No need to worry if you need to learn- you will!

They go out of their way to make everything great from you room; every meal, right to the very end of the adventure. The guides were very friendly, as was the whole staff. Butch: Thanks for another awesome hunt. I killed a 390” stag and a record book tahr. He’s 13 inches and 9 inch bases. Dad killed a 400” stag and a 12 inch tahr. We swapped a Texas guided aoudad sheep hunt to this outfitter in exchange for the upgrades on our stags. (BUTCH’S NOTE: Toby is one of our best aoudad outfitters). In just 2.5 days our party of two wives and two husbands caught and landed 19 giant Redfish, with 17 of them over 40" and several over 50"! Absolutely amazing guides, great boats, an awesome fishery and wonderful local seafood. And it was very reasonably priced to boot.

Butch, Thanks for setting me up on a truly great Newfoundland moose hunt. I was at the Lake Camp and everything was absolutely top notch with lots of game, comfortable camp, friendly and experienced guides (my guide was guiding for his 47th year!) and the best food I’ve ever had in a back-country camp. I got my money’s worth since it took until Saturday morning (last 1/2 day) to finally find a suicidal moose, but we closed the deal on a small bull. We glassed lots of big bulls, but they were in the timber with cows and would not move or come to a call. I also saw some really big woodland caribou (next trip). This was physically one of the hardest hunts that I have ever done since we walked probably 8-10 miles each day through the marshy ground and the thick scrub, but I loved it!

I am touching base with you on our recent Namibia experience. This Safari was in short the best hunt I have ever been on with an outfitter, they are without a doubt an excellent experience and I would highly recommend them to any of my hunting friends. The quality and quantities of the animals was impressive with good representations of all species listed as available. The guides are bow hunters and know their stuff. Listen to what they tell you and you will have success. They know how to tell trophies and are honest as to what you are or are not shooting. They are also very knowledgeable of their property, blinds, other animals, etc. They have game cameras so they know what is and is not coming into the waterholes. They work very hard to get you animals and went above and beyond to get you your trophy. The food was easily 5-star every meal. I would go there just to eat dinner, it was that good! Lodging was outstanding in space, cleanliness, service, views, etc. The common area was beautiful as was the grounds. There is not a single thing out of place, it is a place you could take your spouse and they would just love hanging around the property. In conclusion this place is just a real special place, what makes it special is the people, the attention to detail, the love of what they do, AWESOME!!

In fact, I never thought any trip could equal my trips to China and Mongolia that you have sent me on -- but this one did. To start----the outfitter and his staff are just great people to work with. They answered all my questions prior to the hunt----there were no surprises! Their "Greeter", Jami, was right there at the airport to meet me------he walked me through every procedure----no questions or problems anywhere getting through Moz. customs or getting cleared on the gun permit. Then their pilot, Pete, was on hand answering every question. He is a very personable and knowledgeable young man and a great pilot. When we arrived at the landing strip at camp, more great people to meet and take care of me. I really enjoyed meeting everyone. I was then taken to my main camp and met Sara and my PH, LJ Marisi. I was soon settled in my cabin with more help than was needed. Sara took care of every request immediately without question. ( I only had one major request and that was extra blankets and a minor, for a candle-----I knew that I would be up every morning before the generator would come on). After getting completely settled,---off to their gun range to shoot my gun as well as the 416 Remington rental. All was well! I need to add that the facilities and the food as well as the hospitality was more than anyone could ask for. On to the hunt---------game was plentiful and the PH and the two trackers, Mudu and Venise were just outstanding. All three took excellent care of me every day. It was just a wonderful hunt---------I am glad that I opted for the Buff hunt in the Swamp. It was an experience that every hunter to Africa needs to see and experience----I am glad I went, although, it was a very taxing hunt (in the Swamp ) for this 72 year old hunter. I may never get to go back to Africa------getting old just ain't for sissies----but if I do get to go, it will most likely be with them again for their great plains game. I still want a Sable, as well as their Reedbuck, Bushbuck and Hartebeest. Please feel free to use me as a reference. We had a great time and I would highly recommend it. Our guide was exceptional and very knowledgeable. The food was incredible and everything that we had to eat was wonderful. The lodge was very clean, comfortable, and was situated in a beautiful area. The rooms were not large but the bed was comfortable, clean, and it had a private bath and shower. The daily laundry service was extremely nice and prevented the need to take a bunch of clothes. This is a huge plus! We had ample opportunity to take quality animals and never felt rushed or pressured to take a shot at an animal we weren’t happy with. We were able to take about 5 animals each that was cheaper than a good elk hunt where you can only take one animal. This was an exceptional hunt.

High Altai Argali Sheep

Mongolia provides the core habitat for Argali Sheep, possessing the highest body weight and largest horns of any wild sheep. Both the Altai and Gobi Desert species are found in Mongolia, and SCI and other conservation organizations recognize the Mid-Altai (Hangai) Argali as a separate record book entry. Argali are found at altitudes between 7,500-16,000 feet. The hunt is relatively easy physically for Gobi and Altai Argali, which are found at lower elevations. We at Jack Atcheson and Sons have been dealing directly with this outfitter and sending hunters there since 1969.

The camps are traditional Asian ger or yurts. They are warm, clean and comfortable with separate areas for dining, bathing and sleeping. Every camp has a cook and interpreter, with very good food and quality service. Electricity is supplied by generators.

Spend the first part of this trip working at a Wildlife Conservation Center at the Altai Mountains of Khovd Province. Dates & Pricing

Day 1. october 10th, 2021. flying out west.

Drive to Ulaanbaatar airport for the flight to Khovd. Upon arrival, meet the local driver and head out to the Myangan Ugalzat Wildlife Conservation Center by Tsetseg Sum. Arrive in the conversation center in the evening, enjoy a dinner and set to bed.

Day 2. October 11th, 2021. Wildlife experience

Time to get to work! Mount the horses and ride up the mountain to set tracking cameras assisting the rangers to monitor wildlife and the health and condition of the Argali (wild sheep) and Yangir (Ibex) that inhabit this protected area. Revert to basecamp for lunch, and then take a tour through the nature reserve, stopping en route with a nomadic family for a warm cup of milk tea. In the evening meet the rangers to talk about the conservation efforts, challenges and achievements made by this newly founded center. The rangers are eager to share their experiences with outsiders, and as practically no travelers reach this location, you are guaranteed to a lively and informative discussion over wildlife conservation in Mongolia.

Day 3. October 12th, 2021. Migrating by camels

After breakfast drive to the autumn camp of a nomadic family, to join and assist them as they migrate to their winter pastures. Tsetseg Soum being one of the last places in Mongolia where camel caravans are being utilized to mobilize the nomads’ camps, and we would join one such family to witness this rapidly declining tradition which now gives way to trucks and other modern means of transportation. Help the family take down their ger, pack their belongings, and join them as they walk to their winter camp. Help them set back the ger, and stay for a traditional Khorkhog style with them. Kate in the evening revert ti the conservation center.

Day 4. October 13th, 2021. To Bayan Ulgii

Leave Myangan Ugalzat and drive to Khovd City, once the administrative center of the entire Western Mongolia region. Arrive in town in time for lunch, and then take a walk through the center of town featuring some interesting soviet style buildings. Back in the cars, take the two hours drive to Ulgii town, the capital of Bayan Ulgii province. En route pause by the beautiful Tolbo Lake before arriving in Ulgii in time for dinner.

Day 5. October 14th, 2021. Meet the Kazakhs

From Bayan Ulgii take the approximately two hours’ drive to Ulan Hus soum. Here, meet the Kazakh family with which we stay for the coming few days. The Kazakhs are Mongolia’s largest ethnic minority with a population of about 100,000, forming about 4% of total Mongolian population. However, about 90% of Bayan Ulgii province are Kazakh. The Kazakhs are known for their delicate handicrafts, their lovely songs, and the Dombra, their traditional two-stringed musical instruments. But most of all, the Kazakhs are known for practicing the ancient tradition of training and hunting with Golden Eagles. The family we stay with practicing this tradition which was kept mainly in Mongolia during the communist time, when the central government of the USSR banned any national practices in an attempt to unify the different nationalities within the Soviet Bloc to create one nation under one flag and one leader. After traditional lunch with our hosts, join them for the rest of the day, learn about their unique history, their traditions that are very much influenced by them being Muslims, and their way of life. After dinner, set in for the night in their cozy yurts which are larger than the Mongolian ger.

Day 6. October 15th, 2021. Hunting with Golden Eagles

Once again mount horses, this time to join a small group of eagle trainers, as they go on a hunt. This is a unique opportunity to see the real practices and traditions involved with hunting with eagles, in a way very few visitors ever see. Climb to a top of a high hill, and wait with the hunter for his assistances to scare away animals hiding at the foot of the hill. Once a fox, rabbit or other game is running out of its hide, the hunter would then release the eagle. This practice takes place only n winter time, when the furs of the hunted animals are fully grown. Spend the day with the hunter, and learn from him about the secrets of this unique tradition, from snatching the chick off the nest, raising and training it, and until the bird is sent back to the wild. In the evening ride back to the family’s yurt for a second night with them.

Day 7. October 16th, 2021. Back to Ulgii

In the morning hours ride again with the hunter to a nearby mountain, for some more unique photography opportunities. Revert to the family for last lunch with them before saying farewell, and drive back to Ulgii town. Here, visit one of the many mosques around town, pay a visit the provincial museum holding great display on the flora and fauna of the province, as well as its ethnic minorities and their traditions. Wrap up the day with a visit to the local market before enjoying a farewell dinner in the city’s best restaurant offering traditional Kazakh cuisine.

Day 8. October 17th, 2021. Flight back to Ulaanbaatar

In the morning hours drive to Ulgii’s airport to board the flight back to UB. Arrive at UB airport and take a ride back to the city center.

Some recommendations: Weather in Mongolia in summer is not very stable, sometimes it can be as cold as degrees at nights on the mountains sometimes very hot. So it is always better to pack for the worst.

Hunting In Mongolia

Mongolia has a population of just 2.7 million people spread out over an area half the size of Europe. Mongolia resides on a high mountainous plateau over 5,000 ft above sea level. The Altai, Hangai, Hentii and Hiangan mountain ranges surround the country and shield it from the humid and warm airflows from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in an arid, high desert type environment.

The Gobi Desert makes up a little less than 1/3 of the country. The Gobi Desert is primarily made up of dry rocky mountains and valleys. It is a unique ecosystem that is home to snow leopards, ibex, wild sheep, goats, wild horses and antelope. There is even the Mazaalai bear that has made its home in the Gobi desert.

Arrival and Departure

Clients from the US need to book their flights to Ulaanbaatar through their travel agents. Ulaanbaatar is the Capital of Mongolia and provides numerous tourist activities and historical while at the same time providing fully modern services.However, we can assist you with travel arrangements via Bejing or Seoul.  You need to book these hunts at least a year in advance as it takes time to process and secure the limited number of permits available, and overall a lot of work goes into setting these hunts up.

If you travel by way of Bejing, you will be met at the Bejing Airport by an English speaking company representative who will help you clear customs and your firearms declaration. If you are traveling via Seoul you will need to overnight in Seoul, we recommend that you have us secure your hotel room for you as we can generally get better rates.

On return, when you re-enter the U.S. you will go through customs and will have your trophies checked by USFWS before heading on to your final destination. Note, make sure to fill out all necessary paperwork to bring your firearms out of and back into the U.S.

Travel to Hunting Camp

Hunting camps are located all over Mongolia depending on what species you are going to hunt. The distance from Camp to Camp at times can be quite far. Typically you will be traveling by way of quality 4×4 vehicles. You will have an English speaking camp manager who will accompany you throughout your entire trip. Typically you will be traveling 7-10 hours by way of 4x4s to reach your camp. Your guide and camp staff will meet you at the camp, they are all extremely friendly and helpful people.

Camp, Accommodations and Food

Accommodations will vary by hunting area. Some will have well equipped base camps with permanent buildings, Yurts, outhouses, generators, furniture, stock corrals and trophy care facilities. While other camps will be more like spike camps consisting of Yurts, portable trailers or lightweight tents.

Food is basic meats, rice, pasta, salami, bread, nuts, vegetables, fruit, soups, etc, which is quite good and filling. If you like any special snacks like candy bars, juice mix, jerky, etc, you will need to bring that with you. Bottled water is generally available, but you should still bring a water filter, steri-pen or purification tables. Generally tea is served with every meal, so if you prefer coffee, let us know ahead of time or bring instant packets with you. The camps will also have sodas, fruit juice, beer and vodka available.

The Hunt!!!

Normally, when you arrive at the main camp, we will start off doing some scouting together. While scouting we will be discussing some of the characteristics and behaviors of your desired game species as well as viewing some of the actual game animals. If the animals move out of the area for some reason or we cannot find a good one, then we will move as necessary to another camp until we find an animal we are happy with.

Since Genghis Khan and his Mongol horsemen swept out of what is today eastern Mongolia to dominate most of Central Asia in the 13th century, Mongolia has figured prominently in human history. More than twice the size of Texas and strategically situated between Russia and China, this land has a variety of ecosystems, which harbor many of Asia’s most desirable hunting species. With the Altai Mountains in the west and remote forests in the north, as well as the vast Gobi Desert in the south, Mongolia boasts a great variety of wildlife. Mongolia is also one of the least populated countries on earth, with a population density of less than 2 people per square kilometer, most of whom live in the towns and cities. It is blessed with considerable natural resources such as coal, copper, and other minerals. Capital is derived from the sale of these and the country is developing a good infrastructure in the modern era.

Mongolia has developed a strong tourism industry and hosts a large number of foreigners every year, primarily for nature and outdoor-oriented activities, including camping, fishing, and hunting. Mongolia has had an active hunting program for tourists for more than 25 years and has one of the best game management systems in Asia.

Mongolians are among the world’s best horsemen and have an ancient love of hunting and outdoor life. Largely still pastoral, Mongolians raise large herds of camels, horses and sheep. The nomadic life is changing nowadays, but thousands of Mongolians still travel with their livestock from one grazing place to the next following the changing of the seasons.

The extraordinary beauty and solitude of Mongolia’s mountains coupled with a diverse array of big game species attracts many hunters each year. It has become one of the most popular destinations in Asia for hunters and is a great choice for a first Asian hunting experience. For adventurous sportsmen who wish to have a well organized hunt in a remote and fascinating land, among people whose traditional culture has changed little in thousands of years, Mongolia is the country to visit.

Mongolia is perhaps most famous for two of the largest wild sheep in the world – the Altai Argali and the Gobi Argali. These magnificent sheep are found in excellent numbers in the Altai Mountains and in the Gobi Desert, respectively. We also offer hunts for the Gobi argali found in the Hangai Mountains, which is larger than the sheep of the desert and categorized as a separate trophy, for trophy recording purposes, known as the Hangai Argali, by international sheep hunters. Very few licenses for these sheep species are issued each year and the demand far exceeds the supply. Choice of hunting area is critical to the size of the trophy. Our experience works for our clients in obtaining licenses and in selecting the right area for each hunt.

Mongolia is also well known for ibex. Two species are found in Mongolia – the Siberian ibex, of the Altai Mountains and the smaller Gobi ibex of the Gobi desert. Ibex populations are high, leading to high success rates and the mountains of Mongolia are neither high, nor very steep, making ibex hunting there easier than it is in other Asian countries. Ibex hunting in Mongolia is perhaps the most popular hunt in Asia today.

For over 20 years, Mongolia has been a popular destination for hunters seeking good Asian wapiti, or elk. These large deer are almost indistinguishable from the North American elk of Colorado and Wyoming. Unfortunately, several severe winters and poaching problems in western Mongolia have resulted in the suspension of elk hunting. The wapiti herds are recovering now and there is hope that hunting will again be reopened in the next few years. The most popular hunts take place during the rut in September and early October, when the bulls are “bugling” just like North American elk.

Many hunters enjoy seeing the wide windswept steppe country of Eastern Mongolia, where Genghis Khan was born and came to power. Here large herds of Mongolian gazelles can be found and in the winter wolves can be easily hunted.

Mongolia also offers bird shooting for Asian Capercaillie, Black Cock, Hazel Hen and Sandgrouse, as well as excellent fishing for Taimen, Grayling and Trout.

Mongolia Eagle Hunting Tour

On the western Mongolian Falconry Tour, you will travel to Bayan-Ulgii province, where the national minority Kazakhs or Mongolian falconer people live. You will take a return flight to Bayan-Ulgii to discover the unique life of the Mongolian Falcon Hunter. Mongolian falcon hunters have kept their traditions and custom at their origin for hundreds of years. Among their traditions, eagle training and eagle hunting are the most fascinating and attractive things. In Bayan-Ulgii, you will visit and stay with an eagle-training Kazakh family, travel to the mountains on horseback to see how the Kazakhs train the eagles and hunt with them except for discovering balbal stones, enjoy the natural scenery and sightsee Ulgii town.

Day 1: Fly to Ulgii, visit eagle hunting Kazakhs

The driver meets you at the hotel and transfers you to the airport for a flight to Ulgii, a central town of Bayan-Ulgii. Bayan-Ulgii is a province where the national minority Kazakhs reside. The Kazakhs are the only Muslim people in Mongolia and are well-known that they have been keeping their traditions at their origin compared to the Kazakhs of other countries. You will land in Ulgii after a 2.5-hour flight. Meet your local guide and driver. The journey continues to an eagle-training Kazakh family's home. Discover their unique lifestyle, try Kazakh foods and stay with the Kazakh family.

Day 2: Go to mountains and see the Eagle Hunting

You will mount on a horse (driving is available if you do not have much horse riding experience) and go to the nearby mountain to see how the Kazakhs hunt with the Eagles. Hunting animals will require days sometimes. Therefore, they use baits for the eagle hunting demonstration. Continue the nomadic eagle hunter’s lifestyle discovery, hear stories, and see how they train and treat the eagle. If you are a fit and adventurous rider, you can ride among the mountains with the eagle hunters for authentic hunting for a whole day.

Day 3: Return to Ulgii and visit market

Ulgii, a central town of Bayan-Ulgii province, is located 1600 km from Ulaanbaatar. Taking an internal flight is the best way to save time and meet the Eagle Hunting People not driving far. The internal flight takes 2.5 to 3 hours in one way. The Kazakhs are nomadic people who move in search of pasture and water for their animals. Therefore, the driving distance from Ulgii to the Eagle Hunting Kazakhs may vary. Your falconer host family’s pasturelands are within 150 km distance from Ulgii at its furthest. You will ride horses when you go to the mountains for Eagle training and eagle hunting. If you do not have much horse riding experience, you can sit in the vehicle and follow the eagle hunters. Once you are in the mountains, some hiking is required to find the best place for the hunting demonstration.

Tour meals are included according to the itinerary. In Ulgii town, you will eat at Kazakh and Turkish restaurants. Meat is the main ingredient for meals and is served for lunch and dinner along with vegetables. There will be more meat in traditional Mongolian and Kazakh meals. With nomads, you will try authentic Kazakh meals and some traditional Mongolian meals. Different types of meals offered simultaneously are not customary in the Mongolian tradition. If you are a vegetarian or have other dietary restrictions, please inform us in advance, and we will make arrangements accordingly. We will supply two 0.5L bottles of water a day. The tour includes a 2-day stay with an eagle hunter family and one night in a hotel in the town. You may get some information about the nomadic homestay at Mongolia nomad family . WC and shower are available when you stay in a hotel but not available when staying with the eagle hunting family. This tour doesn't include accommodation in Ulaanbaatar. If you wish, we can book a hotel in Ulaanbaatar. Therefore, feel free to request us to book a hotel in Ulaanbaatar .

An English-speaking Kazakh guide of Bayan-Ulgii will serve you. Our Ulaanbaatar guides can guide you in Bayan-Ulgii, but there will be some additional fee as the guide should fly with you from/to Ulaanbaatar. The majority of our guides are English speaking. We also have German, French, Spanish, and Japanese-speaking guides. They are all professionally trained, friendly, and helpful, and most of them were born and grown in the countryside. Therefore, they have good knowledge of the country’s culture, tradition, history, and geography.

Four wheels driving Russian vans or jeeps driven by experienced, friendly, and safe mechanic drivers will serve you in Bayan-Ulgii. Sedan or 4xWD Japanese vehicles will transfer you for the internal flights. Different car types are available upon request.

The Falconry Tour in Western Mongolia is available all year round. The Eagles and the horses are not strong after the long and harsh winter. Therefore, summer, autumn, and winter are the best time to take the tour. The Kazaks or the Eagle Hunting people reside 1600 to 1700 km from Ulaanbaatar. To save time, we arrange the tour with a round-way internal flight. If you travel in the summer, we can arrange the tour overland, including some attractions and scenic places of the Gobi desert , central Mongolia , northern Mongolia , and western Mongolia . Western Mongolian temperature is approximately 5°C lower than the central or southern part of Mongolia as it is mountainous and elevated. As well as, it gets cold earlier in autumn and becomes warm late in summer. Therefore, we suggest you bring warm clothes either in the summer months. Western Mongolia is renowned for its rich cultural tapestry, home to numerous ethnic groups including the Kazakh people, and remains one of the least explored regions in the country. Full Itinerary

Aug 1. Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, meet at the airport after custom formalities and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is dedicated for you to relax and recover from your travels to Mongolia.

Aug 2. Giant Genghis Statue Tour

This morning, we will drive out of the city for 1.5 hour to visit the Giant Genghis Statue and climb up the head for panoramic view and explore the surroundings. Then we will drive back to Ulaanbaatar in the early afternoon. Lunch & dinner independent.

Aug 3. Karakorum

Meet your tour guide and driver at the hotel lobby and we start our journey to the west. Today, we will drive to Karakorum, the ancient capital of Mongol Empire located in the Orkhon valley in a drive that takes 5-6 hours with a short stop by Elsen Tasarkhai. Arrive in Karakorum in the afternoon and visit legendary monastery Erdene Zuu, the first Buddhist monastery in Central Mongolia founded in 1586 and Museum of Karakorum which gives a good introduction to Central Mongolia, its’ history, and the UNESCO world heritage site Orkhon river valley. Short drive from Karakorum Museum to our camp where we will stay overnight today. Spend a rest of the day relaxing in midst of the steppe feeling nomadic vibe.

Aug 4. Khorgo Terkh National Park

After breakfast, we continue our journey toward Terkhiin Tsagaan lake in located in Khorgo Terkh National park. Break our journey at Tsetserleg town, Arkhangai for a visit to legendary Zayiin Gegeen Monastery from 17th century. Short drive from Tsetserleg to historical Takhar rock. Over 150 inscriptions in various scripts including Turkic, Uyghur, Mongolian, Tibetan, Manchu and Chinese were engraved on the cliff, but most of them seem to have barely appeared as time passes. Optional yak riding and lunch near Taikhar rock. In the afternoon, we continue our drive toward Khorgo Terkh. Short stop at Chuluut river canyon, a picturesque 20 m deep steep basaltic rock canyon. Arrive at our ger camp in the late afternoon, transfer to the tourist ger camp and rest.

Aug 5. Hojuulyn Gol, Tosontsengel

After breakfast, we will have a trip around the lake and volcanic surrounding. The lake lies calmly in the arms of tall hills, its water extremely clear and lined with long sand beaches. The road winds along the shoreline, past Shamanic piles of black lava, before it cuts a short distance inland towards the Khorgo Volcano. At around 10,000 feet up, the volcano is now extinct, but still revered by the nomads of the region. A short walk takes you to the crater rim, where red-stained rock descends into a deep chasm surrounded by sacred Ovoo mounds. Look back towards Lake Terkh Tsagaan - there is an excellent view over the lake through a small hill pass. Lunch back at the ger camp and we depart to Hojuulyn Gol valley via Solongot pass, one of the tallest mountain pass of astounding Khangai Mountain range. In the early evening, arrive at Hojuulyn gol ger camp, dinner and rest.

Aug 6. Ulaagchyn Khar lake, Zavkhan

Continue our journey toward Ulaagchyn Khar lake located along the Bor Khyar sand dunes. You will enjoy incredible setting of lake over in the middle of golden dunes surrounded by picturesque mountains. Enjoy hiking around the dunes and visit the most scenic spot at this unique landscape. Dinner and overnight at tourist ger camp (basic facility).

Located 1132 m above the sea level, Ulaagchyn Khar lake is 38 km long and 50 m deep in places, extends along the south of the northern Margats mountain range at the northern edge of Bor Khyar sand dunes.    

Aug 7. Hungii river valley via Muhart river

Breakfast at the ger camp and we drive to Muhart river, a river that’s originating from ground surrounded by towering sand dunes – unique natural combination.  Enjoy hiking around and optional sand sledding into the river. Lunch nearby and we continue our journey west toward Khyargas lake. Break our journey at Hungii river basin located along Bor Khyar sand dunes. Set out tents at our camping spot. Overnight under starry sky.

Aug 8. Khetsuu Khad, Khyargas Lake

In the morning, we continue our journey toward western Mongolia. Our today’s journey end at Khetsuu Khad, a dramatic rocky outcrop on the southern shore of Khyargas lake. Khyargas lake is one of the 4 biggest lakes which cover more than 1000 square km and 40-90 m deep. Transfer to the ger camp at Khetsuu Khad and lunch. The afternoon is spent leisurely with optional swimming, hiking or boat trip on the lake.

Lake Hyargas, one of the largest lakes of Mongolia, lies about 100 kilometers south of Lake Uvs in the territory of the Depression of Great Lakes. The Zavkhan river feeds Airag lake, which is further connected to Hyargas lake that has not outlet. The salt water lake, stretching from west to east, is 83 kilometers long and 31 kilometers wide. Few species of fish including the rare Altai Osman (Oreoleuciscus potanini) inhabit in Khyargas lake.    

Aug 9. Lake Uureg via Ulaangom

Today we continue our journey toward west. Our drive takes 4-5 hour until reaching Ulaangom, a center of Uvs province. Arrive and lunch at the local restaurant. After lunch, we continue to Uureg lake surrounded by Turgen and Tsagaan Shuvuut mountain. The saline lake is 1425 m above the sea level and it is known to be mosquito free lake. Our drive takes around 2 hours passing Turgen soum and Ulaan Khutul pass along our way. Arrive and check in to our next ger camp located along the lake shore.

Uvs province is located in Great Lakes Depression of Altai Mountain. The regions are home to diverse ethnic groups and nationalities living in Uvs province including Durvud, Bayad, Khalkh, Tuvans, and Kazakhs. The province is famous by its majestic high mountains and great lakes.      

Aug 10. Ulgii, Bayan-Ulgii

Today we drive to Ulgii for 5-6 hour passing by Achit Lake along our way. Arrive in Ulgii in the afternoon and transfer to the hotel for check in. Visit Bayan-Ulgii province museum and local bazaar in the town. Dinner and overnight at tourist ger camp.

Aug 11. Tsengel Khairkhan, Meeting with Eagle Hunters

Breakfast at the hotel and we start our Bayan-Ulgii exploration today. Drive more west from Ulgii passing by Ulaan Hus and Tsengel soum, we arrive at our host Kazakh eagle hunter family in the afternoon. Pitch our tents near the eagle hunter’s ger. Rest of the day is spent with Kazakh family observing and taking part in their daily life chores including herding, milking, eagle training and so on. Enjoy Kazakh traditional meal for dinner. Overnight in tent.

Aug 12. Dayan lake and Altai Mountains

We say good bye to our host family and continue our journey south to Dayan Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in Western Mongolia. It is 18 km long moraine lake fed by small rivers from snow peak mountain in Altai Mountains. Arrive and pitch our tent one the shore of the lake. In the afternoon, we trek along the lake while observing its beauty. Dinner and overnight at tent.

Aug 13. Ulgii

Early morning drive back to Ulgii today. Lunch along the way in a scenic spot. Arrive in Ulgii in the late afternoon. Arrive and check in at the ger camp. Overnight in hotel & dinner independent.

Aug 14. Ulaanbaatar

Farewell to the tour staffs and we catch afternoon flight to Ulaanbaatar today. Arrive and transfer to the hotel for check in. Farewell dinner at local restaurant.

Ulaanbaatar:  Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia, offers a variety of hotels ranging from basic guesthouses to high-end 5* hotel.

Some of our Mongolia tours do not include hotel stays in Ulaanbaatar in the tour package, where clients can choose a hotel that suits their needs and budget. Please make sure to check your tour program`s Inclusions and Exclusions section to confirm if your hotel stay is included in the package.

If you wish us to book your hotel for you, your travel consultant will be happy to recommend and book an ideal hotel for you.

Outside Ulaanbaatar:  Outside of Ulaanbaatar where there are no hotels, tourist  Ger  (yurt)  camps   are the best accommodation for travelers. A Ger is Mongolian traditional dwelling made of felt layers and wooden construction, and the Mongolians have lived in Gers for thousands of years. Tourist Ger camps offer comfortable Gers with 1-3 beds with good bedding (1 Ger equals 1 hotel room), and also offer well-maintained public western style showers and WCs on their grounds. Some Ger camps offer en-suite bathroom facilities at additional charge, please ask your Selena Travel advisor for further details when booking your Mongolia tour. 

Food on Selena Travel tours 

In the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, a great variety of restaurants can be found and you will be eating at some of the best restaurants of Ulaanbaatar on your Mongolia tour while in the capital. Once you are outside the capital, Ger restaurants in Ger camps, local cafes in the small towns and sometimes nomadic families will be the places where you will be eating most of your meal. Ger restaurants often offer set continental breakfasts, set menu lunches and dinners consisting of salad or soup, main course and dessert.

 While on the tour, during your longer driving days you will take packed lunch from Ger camps, often vegetable salad, main course such as fried chicken/noodles/dumplings and a small dessert, while hitting the road. Most of the food restrictions and allergies such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and many others, can be accommodated with easy on your Mongolia adventure.

  Luggage allowance on Selena Travel tours 

If you are on an overland only tour across Mongolia, the recommended weight of your luggage is  20kg  per person (max). However, kindly note that domestic flight luggage allowance per person is  15 kg  (10 kg for the check in luggage and 5 kg for the carry on luggage). It is possible to purchase extra luggage space which costs US$2 - 5 per 1kg.

DESTINATION & ATTRACTIONS BRIEF INFO The majestic western Mongolia  is the most beautiful part of the country. The mountainous area climate is extreme with very little vegetation, giving the surrounding landscape a barren appearance. The stunning mountains of Altai are home to wild animals such as the globally endangered Snow Leopard, Argali and Ibex, as well as wolves and many bird species.

Ethnic groups:  Altai area is a place where many ethnic groups inhabit. You will meet the Kazak, Tuva, Torguud and many other small groups and enjoy their distinctive traditions and lives. The Kazakh is a small ethnic group of Turkic origin that was one of Genghis Khaan's tribes. They are Muslims and now live peacefully keeping their completely different customs, strict traditions, religion and inhabit the Altai Mountains. Not like their relatives in Kazakhstan, they speak in their own Kazakh language as Mongolian government gave them the rights to keep and conserve their native language and religion.
