Sightseeing:

Naples (Napoli, Campania) is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. It has a great bay with nice views of the Capri and the Ischia Islands. The city is maybe not so delightful as Rome or Florence, but it deserves a place among the destinations a tourist should not miss in Italy.

You will be surprised how easily you can get around by foot, too. Interesting spots are almost on every corner and most distances – especially in the (historic) centre – are small and can be walked in a matter of minutes.

Naples can be a little "rough" around the edges at times! Watch your belongings, pickpockets are really professional here.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Hop-on Hop-off buses in Naples. Their pickup point is only a 5 minute walk from the cruise terminal to the left site of the Castel Nuovo. Some busses have no cover on top, so dress accordingly.

It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .

You can take the train to Ercolano, Pompeii and Sorrento. You can also take SITA bus 5001 in front of the terminal to get to Pompei. A 45 minute trip.

A 40 minute boat trip to Sorrento by fast ferries from Beverello (The ferry teminal only 100 meters from where the cruise ships dock) is 12.30 Euro one way. The bus to get you in the center of Sorrento is 1 Euro. Than you can take the train, 1 hour trip , close by (very frequent departures) back to Naples for 4.10 Euro, which also makes a stop at Pompeii. From Napels Garibaldi station take the bus (watch your belongings!!) or take a taxi back to port.

A new metro station opened in 2015 near the cruise terminal, giving good connections to the main train station and the National Museum. Tickets are Euro 1.50, good for an hour. Every 10 minutes. Get off at the Piazza Garibaldi station at Stazione Centrale di Napoli.

Nearby Places:

Pompeii (open daily from 8:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.) is the most important historic site in this part of Italy; at one time (a long, long time ago) it was a prosperous city with 20,000 residents. The eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79 buried the town for some 1,700-plus years. It was rediscovered in the mid-18th century as a result of excavations, and visitors can now wander the streets of this ancient, doomed city.

Vesuvius It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. The two other volcanoes in Italy (Etna and Stromboli) are located on islands. Vesuvius is on the coast of the Bay of Naples, about nine kilometers (six miles) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is conspicuous in the beautiful landscape presented by the Bay of Naples, when seen from the sea, with Naples in the foreground

Capri , Ischia and Sorrento are just a short boat ride away. The ferries to Capri are next to your cruise ship. Some are slow (75 minutes) and some are very fast (hydrofoils 40 minutes) The small Italian island of Capri is situated 5 km from the mainland in the Bay of Naples, a celebrated beauty spot and coastal resort since the days of the Roman Republic until now. Shopping and Food

Shopping in Naples is a favorite pastime. The city's retail hub is a relatively easy 10-minute walk from the Stazione Maritima. Head past Castel Nuovo and up to Via Chiaia, a (mostly) pedestrian street lined with shops and bars. Via Chiaia is the favorite place to shop. Left and right of here one wanders in to a myriad of small but characterful alleys and picturesque squares.

Galleria Umberto I is a large covered shopping area similar to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan.

For lunch or dinner with a view head west and stay close to the waterfront to the Via Riviera di Chiara with its many outdoor cafe's (heated on cold days).

Do not forget: Napoli=Pizza!

Communication:

There are many cafes which offer free WiFi for customers, mostly around the main railway station. Most larger cafe's offer free Wifi.

Emergency number: 112

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Most shops and businesses in Italy open from Monday to Saturday from around 8am until 1pm, and from about 4pm until 7pm, though many shops close on Saturday afternoons and Monday mornings, and in the south the day can begin and end an hour later. In the north some businesses work to a 9am-5pm day to facilitate international dealings. Traditionally, everything except bars and restaurants closes on Sunday, though most towns have a pasticceria open in the mornings, while in large cities and tourist areas, Sunday opening is becoming more common.

Best Things to Do in a Day in Naples

My return visit to Naples was part of a Western Mediterranean cruise on NCL Epic . As this is an easy and destination-rich itinerary, it is a good choice for the first-time cruiser .

The itinerary started and finished in the Catalan city of Barcelona , giving me a welcome opportunity to check the progress of La Sagrada Família . Other highlights included the honey-hued Palma de Mallorca , Civitavecchia (for Rome) and visiting the marble quarries at Carrara .

Naples was the easiest port of call to explore independently. Its historic city centre is only a ten-minute stroll from the port and as its main attractions are close to one another, it’s very walkable. But, if needed, I’ve included tips for using the metro in Naples later in this article ( here ).

If you are someone who likes to map it out, here’s one that I have prepared. For a live, interactive map, click on this link or on the image.

Visit Castel Nuovo

entrance to nuovo castle in naples with 2 turreted towers

Start your day in Naples at Castel Nuovo . This enormous military castle looms over the harbour and has eccentric round towers. Built by Charles of Anjou in 1279, most of what you see today is the work of the Catalan architect Guillermo Sagrara who was also responsible for the Exchange in Palma de Mallorca .

The castle’s main entrance is an intricately carved 15th-century white marble triumphal arch, tucked between two of its towers. Inside, there are frescoes by Giotto in the Cappella Palatina and a collection of artwork by Neapolitan painters from the 17th to early 20th Centuries.

Address: Via Vittorio Emanuele III

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday: 8:30 am to 6.30 pm. You can choose one of seven timed entrance slots. More information here .

Stop for a coffee in Galleria Umberto I

cream colored baroque building seen through an arch

This light-filled shopping arcade was built at the end of the 19th century as part of a project to rebuild and renovate much of Naples. Crowned with a domed glass and steel roof, and decorated with elegant murals and sculptures, the Galleria Umberto is part of the UNESCO listing of the Historic Centre of Naples as a World Heritage Site.

Admire Piazza del Plebiscito

After languishing as a car park between the 1960s and 1994, this immense and elegant square has been restored to its former splendour.

Piazza del Plebiscito was built from volcanic rock from Vesuvius in the first half of the 19 th  Century. It is named after the 1860 plebiscite that brought Naples into the unified Kingdom of Italy.

The square is flanked by two majestic buildings.

Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace), one of four royal residences around Naples used by the Bourbon Kings, occupies its southern edge. Facing the Palazzo Reale, Basilica San Francesco di Paola embraces the piazza with its curving colonnades.

Stroll the streets of the historic centre of Naples

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, the historic centre of Naples ( centro storico ) is a warren of old churches, small shops, cafes, and bars. Naples was founded by Greek settlers in 470 B.C. and has retained the imprint of the successive cultures that occupied the city.

person walking down narrow street with row of scooters

The historic centre is roughly bounded by the waterfront on the south,  Via Toledo  and the Spanish Quarter to its western edge and Via Floria on the northern edge. For tourists, Via Duomo marks its eastern side.

Spaccanapoli , meaning ‘Split Naples’ does exactly that. Lined with grocery barrows and one-of-a-kind shops, and inhabited by arch-Neapolitan characters, this is the heart of old Naples.

Don’t miss Via San Gregorio Armeno , which is tucked between Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali. This charming lane is known across Italy for its artisan shops selling handcrafted pastori , or nativity-scene figurines.

Go underground at Galleria Borbonica

Naples is a city with buried secrets. Tunnels, caves, and catacombs lace their way under the city, and I recommend going underground at least once during your day in Naples.

Galleria Borbonica (Bourbon Gallery or Bourbon Tunnel) has a fascinating history.

It housed immense water tanks in the 1600s and served as an escape for the Bourbon royal family. It was an air-raid shelter during World War II and an impound lot.

A section of the tunnel is a Vespa graveyard, populated with confiscated souped-up scooters that have exceeded the 50km/hour speed limit.

Visit Naples Cathedral

Naples is home to more than 450 churches but the most important is Naples Cathedral. The cathedral is dedicated to San Gennaro, the patron saint of the city, and is variously known as the Duomo di Napoli, Duomo di San Gennaro and the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral.

It was built in the 13th Century on the remains of the ancient temple dedicated to the god Apollo. In the late 17th century it was reworked in flamboyant Baroque fashion with the later addition of a late nineteenth-century Neo-Gothic façade.

With a golden Byzantine mosaic and frescoes galore, the best stuff is on the inside. But most importantly, the cathedral is the home of the skull of San Gennaro and an ampoule   that encloses his blood.

It is said that the saint’s blood liquefies twice a year. If the miracle of liquefaction doesn’t occur, misfortune will strike the town.

Address: Via Duomo, 147

Opening hours : Check here . Usually closed between lunchtime and late afternoon.

Closest metro stations: Metro Line 1 University / Metro Line 2 Cavour

Other churches in Naples

Two other churches worth adding to your one-day Naples itinerary are San Lorenzo Maggiore Basilica and San Domenico Maggiore Church. Located in the exact geographical centre of historic Naples, San Lorenzo Maggiore Basilica is famous for the remains of an ancient two-storey Greco-Roman market beneath its floors. Visit San Domenico Maggiore Church for its lavishly decorated interior featuring intricate gold details and a dramatic altar.

Get your history fix at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples

Naples National Archaeological Museum (MANN) is one of the great museums of the world.

Starting life as an army barracks in the 16th Century, it was converted into a museum in the 19th Century. This massive museum is spread across four floors and is home to an extensive collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, as well as artefacts from Ancient Egypt.

Visiting MANN is one of the best things to do in Naples if you are planning to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum. Valuable treasures from these two sites are displayed here, giving you greater insight into daily life in Pompeii and Herculaneum .

The museum’s other highlight is the Farnese Collection . This collection of classic sculptures and objects from the villas of ancient Rome is one of the world’s most important Greco-Roman exhibitions.

Address : Piazza Museo, 19

Opening hours: Wednesday to Monday 9 am to 7.30 pm. Closed on Tuesdays.

Closest metro stations: Museo or Cavour, lines 1 and 2

Admission fee: Ticket price applies. Free on the first Sunday of the month and on a few selected dates.

Admire views of Vesuvius with a walk through Santa Lucia

Visit Castel dell’Ovo

At the end of the Lungomare, on the Borgo Marinaro island, is Naples’ oldest, and most picturesque, castle.

old castle by sea

Castel dell’Ovo was built by the Normans in the 12th century. Prior to that, the site played host to the last Western Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustulus, during his exile.

Today, the castle today is used for events and temporary art exhibitions, but you can take a walk around its fortified walls for free.

There is one thing that you must do if you have just one day in Naples. Eat pizza! One of the best reasons to visit Italy is to feast on pizza and Naples is where it all began.

In 1889 King Umberto I and Queen Margherita needed a respite from their relentless diet of French Haute Cuisine. It just goes to show that you can get too much of a good thing.

Amongst the selection presented to the royal couple, the queen preferred the pizza topped with mozzarella, tomatoes and basil (coincidentally, the colours of the Italian flag).

And so Pizza Margherita was born.

a pizza with tomato and cheese

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is reputed to make the best pizza in Naples. This is also where Julia Roberts munched on a slice of pizza in the movie Eat, Pray, Love .

The pizzeria is on Via Cesare Sersale, close to Naples Cathedral and a 20-minute walk from Naples cruise port. Expect to queue.

Guided Tours of Naples

If you don’t feel comfortable exploring Naples on your own or are looking for greater insight into the city’s history, culture and way of life, consider joining an organised walking tour.

I use GetYourGuide to source and book day excursions. Not only does the platform offer an extensive selection of tours from independent operators, but there is also a very generous cancellation policy.

Here are a few highly-rated tours related to the activities in this article:

Going Further Afield

Maybe you’ve already visited Naples and want to explore the beauty of the Amalfi Coast or the historic sites of Pompeii or Herculaneum. All of these places are easy day trips from Naples, even if you are a cruise passenger.

As with any onshore activities, always check that you will be able to make it back to the ship in plenty of time. If in doubt, book a shore excursion that guarantees to deposit you back at the port before your ship sails away.

Sorrento was the first place I visited on the Amalfi coast more than 30 years ago. Famous for its lemons and high-pedigree hotels, this laid-back town has been popular with tourists since the Grand Tours of the 19th Century.

This is the place to replenish your supplies of limoncello .

Stop for a coffee or lunch in one of the small cafes Piazza Tasso , Sorrento’s main square. Pick up gifts in the town’s famous small ceramics, lacework and marquetry (woodwork) shops.

But, best of all, take in the dramatic views over the Bay of Naples from Sorrento’s lofty clifftop location.

A ferry will take you across the Bay of Naples to Sorrento in 40 minutes. This service departs multiple times a day during the main travel season that runs from April through October.

Island of Capri

Capri is an enchaining garden of Eden with over 8,000 species of flora tumbling over a sheer chunk of limestone, eroded over time into fantastical forms.

The Blue Grotto (Grotto Azzura) is Capri’s headline act. The shimmering, iridescent blueness of the water in this sea cave is due to the reflection of light on the water in the morning.

Renowned as a playground for Roman Emperors, artists and the Hollywood glitterati, Capri’s jaw-dropping beauty comes at a hefty price. Capri town is awash with designer boutiques and jewellery shops, and the island also prides itself on its fine dining.

To reach Capri from Naples, take a high-speed hydrofoil.

The hydrofoil service operates from the Molo Beverello pier and takes about 40 minutes to get to Capri. You can check the timetable here .

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii barely needs an introduction.

Pompeii was once a cosmopolitan resort town inhabited by wealthy Romans. All this ended in 79 A.D when the town was buried under the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius.

Today’s visitors to Pompeii can stroll along the town’s ancient paved streets and view the remains of its lavish villas, elegantly bathhouses, temples and massive 20,000-seater amphitheatre.

roman mosaic and water spout

>>> CLICK HERE TO BUY YOUR SKIP-THE-LINE TICKET WITH AUDIO GUIDE

I have been to Pompeii twice, once with a guide and once without. From my experience, this is one place where it is worth paying for a guided tour.

Pompeii’s ruins are huge and sometimes confusing with little signage. A map and guidebook are unlikely to cut it here.

>>> Visit Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius on a day tour from Naples. Click here for further information and to book.

Herculaneum

For a different perspective, visit Herculaneum, a few stops along the Circumvesuviana train line towards Naples or Sorrento.

Herculaneum suffered the same fate as Pompeii when Vesuvius erupted. However, its buildings are better preserved than those of its neighbour, many having their upper storey intact.

The tragedy of Herculaneum feels immediate.

The town’s boathouses are home to the skeletons of hundreds of people sheltering from the eruption. Whilst waiting for a boat to rescue them, their flesh was vaporised by an intense wave of hot gas, leaving only their charred bones.

human skull and bones

Along with Pompeii, Herculaneum is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take the Circumvesuviana or Campania Express to Ercolano Scavi, which is in the centre of town. The journey time is 10–20 minutes.

Can you visit Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum in one day?

Whilst this should be possible on a typical cruise ship schedule, it will be a long day and could feel overwhelming. Pompeii demands at least a half-day and you will need a minimum of two hours to visit Herculaneum

Getting Around Naples

Naples’ historic centre is an easy 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. Once you leave the cruise terminal, follow the passenger walkway that will take you to the Piazza del Plebiscito in the heart of the historic city centre.

Walking is the easiest way to explore Naples.

If you want to visit places that are further out or reach the city’s main railway station, your best option is line 1 of the city’s metro system , also known as the “Art Line” thanks to the works of art decorating its stops.

A single ticket is valid for 90 minutes. Day tickets offering unlimited journeys are also available.

Municipio is the closest metro station to the cruise terminal.

Naples also has a hop-on-hop-off (HOHO) bus. There is a bus stop outside the terminal, adjacent to Castel Nuovo that you’ll spot upon exiting the terminal building.

The HOHO bus follows two different routes stopping at principal sights and attractions in Naples. In the summer months, a third route takes you to the San Martino Monastery. An audio commentary is included.

Whilst this is a hassle-free way of getting around Naples, the city’s traffic is legendary and there’s every chance you will spend a chunk of your time in congested streets.

Getting To and From Naples Cruise Port

From Porta Nolana

The closest railway station to Naples cruise port is Porta Nolana , a 30-minute walk northeast. If you prefer, you can take metro line 1 from Colombo station near the marina to Garibaldi – Circumvesuviana.

Otherwise, the Naples Alibus Airport Shuttle leaves from outside Stazione Marittima and stops outside Napoli Centrale station. From here, it’s a ten-minute walk to Porta Nolana.

From Garibaldi station

Alternatively, Garibaldi station, on the lower level of Naples’ main railway station, is just over two miles from the cruise terminal. To reach Garibaldi station by public transport, take the metro line 1 from Municipio station to Piazza Garibaldi, or the Naples Alibus Airport Shuttle from the port.

Circumvesuviana train service

From Naples Garibaldi or Porta Nolana, the private Circumvesuviana train service connects the city to Sorrento via Pompeii and Herculaneum, with countless stops along the way. I recommend starting your journey at Porta Nolana station as this is the terminus and you stand a better chance of getting a seat.

Fares are low and services are frequent. But as this is predominantly a commuter line, it can get crowded. Timetable here .

Campania Express

The  Campania Express is a faster and more comfortable alternative to the Circumvesuviana train. However, it is a more expensive and less frequent service that runs between April and October only.

Although these trains run on the same route as the Circumvesuviana, they stop only at popular tourist sites, including Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento.  Again, trains depart Naples from Napoli Porta Nolana and Garibaldi stations.

By ferry and hydrofoil

As Naples Cruise Terminal is located next to its ferry dock, it’s easy to jump on a boat across the Bay of Naples.

Is Naples Safe for Solo Cruisers?

Keeping safe is a priority for solo travellers , especially for first-time solo travellers . Over the years, Naples has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Filthy, crime-ridden, garbage-strewn; you name it, it’s been called it. And yes; petty crime is a problem in Naples, but the same can be said for many major cities. This is not a reason for avoiding a destination; you just need to keep your wits about you. Remain vigilant, keep your belongings close to you and use your hotel or cabin safe to store valuables.

Thank you for reading my Naples cruise port guide

I hope that it helps you have the best day in Naples. Even as a repeat visitor, I found that there were so many things to do that the main challenge was narrowing down the choices.

How to Get to the Naples Cruise Port from the Naples Airport

Naples’ airport, commonly called Capodichino, is very close to the city center. The Metro system in Naples isn’t terribly robust, and although there’s talk of running a Metro line out to the airport at some point, there’s no guarantee of when (or if) that’ll ever materialize. In the meantime, your options for getting to the Naples cruise port from the airport are public buses or taxis.

  • Public Bus – ANM operates an Alibus line that departs from the airport in front of arrivals. These buses stop at both Piazza Garibaldi (in front of the main train station) and Piazza Municipio (near Molo Beverello at the port). A one-way ticket is €3.00, and the bus leaves from the airport roughly every 20 minutes between 06:36-23:45 Monday-Friday and 06:36-23:56 Saturday-Sunday. Consult the official schedule for exact departure times. You can buy tickets right on board the bus. The trip from the airport to the port takes about 15 minutes.
  • Taxi – Because the airport is so close to the city, a taxi trip isn’t as expensive as you might think an airport taxi would be. Not only that, there’s a fixed rate for taxi trips between the airport and the Molo Beverello port. These fixed rates can and do change, but they must be posted in the taxi. At the moment, the fixed fare between the airport and the port is €19.00. You must tell the driver you want this fixed rate before you get into the taxi. If you don’t see the list of fixed fares or a working meter inside the taxi, don’t get in – there are plenty of illegal taxis around ready to swindle unsuspecting visitors out of much more than the appropriate fare.

How to Get to the Naples Cruise Port from Napoli Centrale Train Station

As is the case with transportation to and from the airport, your transportation options to and from the train station in Naples are limited to buses and taxis.

  • Public Bus – Naples’ main train station, called Napoli Centrale, is next to Piazza Garibaldi and is a major hub for public buses in the city. This also happens to be a stereotypically bad “around the train station neighborhood” (some don’t live down to their reputation, but this one is just blech). If you’re up for an adventure, some interesting people-watching, and you’re on a budget, you can get city bus R2 – it starts at Piazza Garibaldi and one of its early stops is the Piazza Municipio (near the port). There’s also the Alibus (listed above under transport from the airport to the port), which runs between the airport and Piazza Municipio, with a stop at Piazza Garibaldi. An Alibus ticket is €3.00 (which you can buy right on the bus), and a ticket for the R2 is €1.20 (which you need to buy from an automated machine at the train station or from a tobacco shop or newsstand before you board).
  • Taxi – Piazza Garibaldi and Napoli Centrale aren’t just a major hub for city buses, they’re also a big stop for the city taxis. It seems there’s a long taxi queue in front of the station all the time, so if you want to hop in a cab it’s easy to get one as soon as you walk out of the station. As mentioned above, you want to make absolutely sure the taxi has a working meter and a posted list of the fixed fares, or you run the risk of it being an illegal taxi that might ask for an exorbitant rate. The fixed rates to the port from the train station can and do change, but at the moment it’s €11.00 one-way. You must tell the driver you want this fixed rate before you get into the taxi.

Naples has one of the most well-connected ferry ports on the western Italian coast, making it one of the best port cities in Europe . The Naples port and ferry docks are located in the same place, so it’s easy to visit Sorrento on a ferry that departs from the Molo Beverello pier.

The ferry takes you across the Bay of Naples on a 40-minute ride to Sorrento . It departs multiple times a day during the busy travel season that runs from April through October, and on weekdays only from November through March.

Beautiful coast of Sorrento, Italy

Once you dock in Sorrento, you’ll have the option to climb up the steep stairs from the port to the road or take one of the many buses and taxis available at the port that will transport you uphill.

You can also take a commuter train to Sorrento. Travel to the train station via taxi from the cruise terminal or catch the Alibus, which is available at the cruise port and will stop at the Stazione Centrale (train station).

Purchase your ticket with cash, then proceed to the Circumvesuviana, a local commuter train line that circles Mount Vesuvius. The train to Sorrento is accessible from the Portolano platform, also called the Portolano Station.

How do I get from the Naples cruise port to Pompeii?

The ancient city of Pompeii, which was buried under the ash of the Mount Vesuvius volcanic eruption in 79 A.D., is one of the most visited archeological excavations in all of Europe.

Only 15 miles away from the Naples cruise port, Pompeii is unlike other historical and cultural sites that are close to the Bay of Naples because it can only be reached by land. On a shore excursion, you’ll be escorted to this famous UNESCO World Heritage Site without having to worry about logistics or getting back to the ship in time.

Couple walking around Pompeii

You can also reach Pompeii from the port by train. Take the Alibus outside the cruise terminal to get to the Circumvesuviana at the Central Station. Purchase your ticket and board the metro commuter-style train at the Portolano platform heading towards Pompeii Scavi. The train will leave you across the street from the main entrance to the Pompeii archeological site.

How do I get from the Naples cruise port to Capri?

Coast of Capri with houses and boats

You can also take a hydrofoil that departs from the Molo Beverello pier, or a ferry that departs from Calata di Massa, which is a 10-minute walk from the cruise port.

On the hydrofoil, it takes about 40 minutes to get to Capri, while the ferry takes about 80 minutes.

What is there to do in Naples on a cruise?

There are dozens of exciting things to do and see on a Naples cruise . As the third-largest city in Italy, it’s a place of mystery and history that spans back beyond ancient Greece and the Roman Empire era.

Here are some of the things to do in Naples during a port of call.

Tour the San Gennaro Catacombs

Couple walking down to San Gennaro Catacombs

Take a guided tour of the San Gennaro Catacombs, near the Basilica dell’Incoronata in the northern part of the city. This two-level underground marvel of tunnels and passageways is lined with more than 3,000 graves and crypts that date back thousands of years and provides insight into the history of Naples.

See the Ruins of Herculaneum

Historical ruins of Herculaneum

The ruins of Herculaneum are considered a better preserved site than its sister attraction, Pompeii. Farther away from Mount Vesuvius, but destroyed by its 79 A.D. eruption nonetheless,  Herculaneum has wooden structures, frames, and roofing that are still intact. Be amazed at the preserved frescoes of Villa of the Papyri and House of Argus.

Shop for Nativity figurines

Nativity scenes called presepi are ubiquitous all over Italy in December, but in Naples they’re more elaborate and mainly crafted in terracotta. Year-round, you’ll find multiple shops and studios on Via San Gregorio Armeno that sell not only the Nativity figures, but all manner of figurines.

Visit Santa Chiara Monastery

Beautiful facade of Santa Chiara Monastery

Marvel at the majolica tiles made in Capodimonte workshops that adorn the multiple octagonal columns that surround this cloister of the Monastery of Santa Chiara, which was founded in 1310. Inside, you’ll find a presepio (Nativity scene) set within a Roman ruin.

Stroll through Santa Lucia

Just west of the Piazza del Plebiscito is Santa Lucia, a neighborhood that offers a glimpse into everyday Neapolitan life. Wander through the streets lined with bakeries, artisan workshops, small cafes, family-owned restaurants, and daily wash hung overhead.

Try the Pizza on Via dei Tribunali

A plate of pizza

Neapolitans agree that the best pizza is found on Via dei Tribunali, a street in the centro storico (old historic) section of Naples. Whether you stand in line at Sorbillo, Il Figlio del Presidente, or Di Matteo, “Pizza Alley” is the place to sample the city’s most famous culinary creation.

Hike in Mount Vesuvius National Park

Couple hiking the beautiful Mount Vesuvius National Park

Once your bus or shuttle drops you off at the ticket counter of the park, hike the narrow path that leads to the edge of the Mount Vesuvius crater, “Il Gran Cono,” or the great cone. You’ll be rewarded with fantastic views of the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast.

Sample Local Wines

There are a number of small vineyards on the slopes leading up to Mount Vesuvius. Find out how local wines are made as you make your way along the wine route. Sample Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio, “the tears of Christ,” one of the most famous wines of the region.

Soak in Ischia Island’s Thermal Hot Springs

The thermal hot springs of Ischia, a volcanic island at the southern edge of the Bay of Naples, are famous for their healing powers for centuries. Boat over to the island on a unique shore excursion that offers a chance to unwind in the lush floral gardens of Poseidon Thermal Gardens. Choose from 20 different thermal pools to dip into, then unwind in the sun on one of the best beaches in Naples, Italy .

The Naples cruise terminal is called Stazione Maritima , and it consists of several piers. The main pier where the cruise ships dock is Molo Beverello , situated next to the busy marina and 100 meters away from the ferry port terminal from where you can take ferries to Sorrento and Capri island.

The terminal building is large and consists of a multitude of modern facilities, such as a brand-new shopping mall, tourist information desks, ATMs, restrooms, cafeterias, restaurants, and a spacious parking lot for tour buses and taxis.

Also known as Maschio Angioino Castle, Castel Nuovo is located at the exit of the cruise terminal area. This massive 13th-century military castle dominates the harbor and Piazza Municipio with its Neoclassical Palazzo San Giacomo, which houses the City Hall.

The castle has five imposing towers and served as a royal seat for the kings of Naples, Aragon, and Spain until 1815.

Today, Castel Nuovo houses a civic museum containing extensive art collections dating from the 15 th to the 20 th centuries, while some halls of the castle are used for temporary cultural exhibitions and events.

2. Castel dell Ovo

The majestic seaside castle is located at the southernmost tip of Naples city, on a peninsula (a former island) with an excellent strategic position that dominates the Gulf of Naples.

It is situated 1.5 km/1 mile or a 20-minute walk from the Naples cruise port and is well worth visiting, as it is the oldest standing fortification in Naples built by the Normans in the 12 th century.

There is no entrance fee, and you can climb to its two towers and an observation deck from where you can take in the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius in the distance.

3. Piazza del Plebiscito

Situated around 800 meters, or a 10-minute walk from the Naples cruise port, the 19th-century Piazza del Plebiscito is one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Naples.

With its 53-meter high dome and Greek-style columns, a large, monumental Basilica San Francesco di Paola (Church of Saint Francis) dominates Piazza del Plebiscito. The Basilica was built in the Neo-classical style and is reminiscent of Rome’s Pantheon. Simple, yet impressive, the interior of the church features valuable and beautiful architecture and artwork.

The renowned 18th-century  San Carlo Theater and Opera House (Teatro di San Carlo), as well as the 17th-century sumptuously decorated Royal Palace of Naples (Palazzo Reale di Napoli), are other two important buildings that you can see around the square.

4. Castel Sant’Elmo

Perched atop the Vomero hill overlooking the city of Naples, Castel Sant’Elmo is a medieval, star-shaped fortress with a rich history dating back to the 14th century.

Originally built as a royal residence, it later served as a military stronghold. Today, Castel Sant’Elmo houses the Naples Museum of Medieval Art, showcasing a diverse collection of artifacts.

The highlight of the castle is the breathtaking panoramic views of Naples and the Bay of Naples that you can admire from the top.

The easiest way to reach the castle is by funicular that you can catch on Via Toledo (one of the main streets located a 10-minute walk from the port). The funicular runs all the time and will take you to the top of the hill. From the top station, you still need to walk about 10 minutes to the castle.

A small entrance fee is required to enter the castle (it was 5€ in 2023).

6. Naples Old Town

Naples is a vibrant city bursting with life, full of colorful, authentic streets where you can find plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, street sellers, and much more. There are several streets you can explore, and they are all within walking distance from Naples cruise port.

The most famous ones are the pedestrian streets Via Toledo and Via Chiaia – they are both located a 15-minute walking distance from the port and they meet at Piazza del Plebiscito and Fontana del Carciofo.

They are super crowded and packed with countless shops, restaurants, bars, and pizzerias offering mouth-watering pizzas, panzerotti, pasta, and other Italian authentic dishes.

Another famous street that traverses the Naples historic center is Spaccanapoli – a narrow, straight, and long promenade where you can explore historic churches, palaces, bustling piazzas, unique shops, and a large number of restaurants, bars, and open-air cafes.

7. Taste the Local Pizza

When it comes to tasting pizza in Naples – it is an absolute must! The pizza was invented in Naples, and in every place where I tried it – that was the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life!

For over one century, L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele has had the reputation of making the best pizza in Naples, and that’s where Julia Roberts was featured indulging in a slice of pizza in the “Eat, Pray, Love” movie. The pizzeria is only 20 minutes’ walk away from the port!

8. Galleria Umberto I

9. Galleria Borbonica

Also known as Bourbon Gallery or Bourbon Tunnel, it is an impressive underground passage built for military purposes to connect the Royal Palace to military barracks in Naples.

It is situated 2 km/1.2 miles, or a 25-minute somewhat uphill walk from the Naples cruise port and represents one of the most unique places you can visit in Naples.

Constructed in the 19 th century, the stunning underground tunnels served as an escape route for the royal inhabitants, and also as a shelter for Naples residents during the bombardments during World War II.

Old cars from 1970, Bourbon Tunnel

Time permitting, I highly recommend you take one of the Bourbon Tunnel tours , as they are a fascinating way to discover the important and emotional moments in the history of Naples.

On tour, you can visit underground caves, a restored ancient cistern, vintage artifacts dating from WWII, pieces of sculptures, old cars and bikes, and much more.

If you are seeking some adrenaline rush, you can go for an adventure or Speleo tour as well. Overall, I was truly impressed by the visit, and I strongly suggest you put it on your Naples bucket list.

Check out Galleria Borbonica tours and activities

10. Pompeii

Pompeii visit is by far the most popular day trip from Naples, due to the huge historical importance of this world-famous archaeological site.

Nestled at the foothills of Mount Vesuvius, the ancient city of Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and other neighboring towns, was buried under 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of the powerful Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The everyday life of this wealthy city was frozen at the moment it was buried, thus the excavated site offered a unique snapshot of Roman life and its inhabitants.

Pompeii archeological site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most visited attractions in Italy.

Today, visitors can roam through the elegantly paved streets of ancient Pompeii, admire the ruins of the lavish mansions and villas of distinguished Romans, visit their elaborate bathhouses, a multitude of Roman temples, a massive 20.000-capacity Amphitheatre of Pompeii, and more.

You can learn about the tragic destiny of the ancient city and over 2.000 Pompeii residents on a self-guided tour, or on a guided tour which I highly recommend.

If  the weather is hot and sunny, make sure you bring a hat and water, as the largest portion of the Pompeii Archeological Park is not shaded.

Keep an eye on your belongings, as there are many pickpockets on the trains in particular. Wear comfortable shoes , as there is a lot of walking involved. The ruins of Pompeii are partially wheelchair accessible.

How to Get from Naples to Pompeii?

The distance from Naples cruise port to Pompeii Archeological Park is 25 km/15.5 miles, or a 25-minute drive. There are several ways to get from Naples to Pompeii.

  • BOOK A TOUR – Although it takes a full day to explore Pompeii, cruise ships offer half-day tours to Pompeii from Naples . These tours often include traveling in big groups, but in my opinion, to fully enjoy the place, you should go for a  small-group tour . In case you decide to visit on your own, make sure you book Pompeii skip-the-line tickets to avoid long queues and crowds.
  • BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – In case you’ve already booked your entrance tickets to Pompeii, the private transfer is the best, fastest, and most convenient option to get to the ruins. It’s even cheaper than a taxi and guarantees you a safe return to the ship. Compare the transfer prices from Napoli to Pompei
  • TRAIN FROM NAPLES TO POMPEII – Take the Circumvesuviana train at Napoli Centrale (Naples central train station at Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at Pompei Scavi/Villa Dei Misteri stop. The train ride lasts 30-35 minutes, and trains go every 30 minutes. Once you get off at Pompeii Scavi-Villa Dei Misteri, the entrance to the archeological site is only a 5-minute walk. The Circumvesuviana line to Pompeii is quite busy, and you might not be able to get a seat. There is no luggage disposal area. Due to the large crowds on the trains, I suggest you save at least one hour for the ride each way.

11. Herculaneum Ruins

Located around 15 km/9.5 miles, or less than a 30-minute drive from Naples cruise port, Herculaneum is another ancient city in Campania that was destroyed in the Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD along with Pompeii and several other neighboring towns.

Smaller in size than Pompeii, but equally wealthy, Herculaneum was a popular resort town and seaside destination for many Roman patrician families.

Today, visitors can stroll through the ruins of Herculaneum and visit the wealthy Roman’s notable houses, sumptuously adorned baths, halls decorated with frescoes and mosaics, splendid arches and columns, spacious atriums…

The most popular ruins are Men’s Baths, Hall of the Augustals, Samnite House, House of Relief of Telephus, and Fornici. It takes only 2-3 hours to visit Herculaneum, which is an ideal option for a half-day trip.

Some parts of the Herculaneum ruins are not wheelchair accessible, and it is highly recommended to leave kids’ strollers or pushchairs at the free bag check counter at the entrance.

How to Get to Herculaneum from Naples?

  • BOOK A TOUR – You can visit Herculaneum with a cruise ship shore excursion or on a private, customized tour (always the most convenient option!)/ small group tour . The archeological site is not as large as Pompeii, and a Herculaneum tour lasts from 2-3 hours.
  • BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – It takes a 30-minute drive to get from Naples to Herculaneum and it’s always the most comfortable option.
  • TAKE A TRAIN TO HERCULANEUM – A train ride is an alternative option. Take the Circumvesuviana train at Naples central station (Napoli Centrale – Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at the “ Ercolano Scavi ” stop, located a 10-minute walk from Herculaneum. Circumvesuviana train line runs every 30 minutes between Naples and Sorrento and has several stops, including Pompeii and Herculaneum stops. The train ride from Naples to Herculaneum lasts 15-20 minutes.

12. Mount Vesuvius

Towering over the city of Naples and the ruins of the ancient Pompeii, Herculaneum, and neighboring cities, the mighty Vesuvius dominates the Gulf of Naples and is one of several volcanoes that form the Campanian volcanic arc.

Vesuvius has become notoriously world-famous due to the eruption in 79 AD that buried the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae, killing 16.000 people overall.

The Vesuvius has erupted over 50 times for thousands of years, and its last eruption lasted from 1913-1944. It is still considered active, and one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

Today, it is possible to visit the Vesuvius National Park and explore its trails, the Great Cono crater (Il Gran Cono) situated at 1.000 meters above sea level, and the park’s rich historical and cultural heritage, consisting of the museum, archeological sites, the Roman villas, and historical buildings.

If you are into hiking, there is a network of 11 paths of a total length of 54 km (33.5 mi) that you can explore and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Naples, Lazio, and the Campania region.

The Mount Vesuvius hike is moderate and you should wear comfortable shoes. Bring a hat, water and of course a good camera .

The visit to the crater lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Check the weather because if it rains, you won’t be able to see the crater (it is closed for safety reasons).

Hot to Get from Naples to Mount Vesuvius?

  • BOOK A TOUR – Cruise ships normally offer the Mount Vesuvius hiking tours, but the number of spots available on these tours is quite limited, so make sure you pre-book the tickets to ensure your spot. If you are looking for a more private option, you should go for   small group tours .
  • BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – The distance between the Naples cruise port and Mount Vesuvius is roughly 20 km/12.5 miles, or a 30-minute drive.
  • VISIT VESUVIUS BY TRAIN – Take the Circumvesuviana train for Sorrento or Poggiomarino via Pompeii at Naples central station (Stazione Centrale – Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at either Ercolano Scavi station (the one where you get off for Herculaneum) or Pompei – Villa Dei Misteri (the one where you get off for Pompeii). From both train stations, you can hop on the local bus going to Vesuvius. The local bus company is EAV, and the buses run quite rarely (every hour or even more).

13. Sorrento

Located on the opposite side of the Gulf of Naples, about 50 km/31 miles from the port of Naples, Sorrento is a magnificent cliffside town and a popular tourist resort on the Sorrentine Peninsula.

Sorrento boasts a scenic coastline, gorgeous landscapes, and a multitude of colorful houses, and is widely known for its wood-carving traditions, ceramics, marquetry, and lacework shops.

You can stroll through its lively Tasso Square (Piazza Tasso), the central square where you’ll find quaint shops, restaurants, and bars serving delicious Italian specialties and local wine.

Delight in the views of the picturesque port of Sorrento – Marina Grande , browse the shops of Via san Cesareo – the main shopping hub of the city, visit a beautiful 14th-century Cathedral of Sorrento , or take in the breathtaking views of the bay from Villa Comunale park and gardens.

The ferry ride can take between 35 minutes to 1h 10 minutes, depending on the ferry company. You embark on the ferry at Molo Beverello ferry station, located only a 5-minute walk from the cruise ship’s dock. The ferries run every 90 minutes, and the main ferry company that provides the ferry services is Alilauro. You can check rates and departure times on their website: http://www.alilauro.it/ . 14. Amalfi Coast

A trip to the marvelous Amalfi Coast is one of the most attractive day trips from Naples. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this scenic stretch of coastline is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy.

Dramatic mountain cliffs, eye-catching, colorful villages, terraced vineyards, secluded pebbled beaches, and bright-yellow lemon groves are the typical landscapes you can admire while you travel through this gorgeous region.

Amalfi Coast consists of a multitude of villages, the most famous one being Amalfi – a tiny, seaside village boasting narrow, cobblestone streets lined with cafes, shops, and typical Italian restaurants, and a beautiful St. Andrew Cathedral (Cathedral of Sant’ Andrea).

The cathedral dominates the main village square – Piazza del Duomo , and dates from the 9 th century when the original church was built. The Cathedral features a magnificent 18th-century Norman-Arab-Byzantine façade and the splendid Cloister of Paradise that served as a burial ground for the noble Amalfi families back in the Middle Ages.

In the village, you’ll also find many authentic shops selling colorful hand-painted ceramics and the region’s signature limoncello liquor.

Amalfi Coast - Day Trip from Naples cruise port

Besides Amalfi, there are many other places you can visit, such as the picturesque village of Positano , Praiano , Furore , Ravello , the Sirenusas (the Gallos, or Li Galli) archipelago , Fornillo , the Bay of Positano , and much more.

It takes more than one day to visit the Amalfi Coast, however, if you stay one day in Naples – you should carefully plan an Amalfi Coast day trip from Naples so you can get the most out of it.

How to Get from Naples to Amalfi Coast?

  • BOOK A TOUR : To get the most out of the Amalfi Coast in a day, the Amalfi Coast tour from Naples is by far the best option for cruise ship passengers. Cruise ships offer various shore excursions to Amalfi Coast that you can choose from, or you can opt for one of the independent tour operators’ tours as these are often more flexible and cheaper. Explore Amalfi Coast day trips from Naples
  • TAXI/ PRIVATE TRANSFER  – The distance from Naples cruise port to Amalfi Coast is about 65 km/40.5 miles, or up to a 1-hour 30-minute drive. This is one of the fastest and most efficient options.
  • TRAIN FROM NAPLES TO AMALFI COAST – To get to Amalfi Coast, the best option is to embark on a train at Napoli Centrale to Vietri Sul Mare, one of the villages of the Amalfi Coast. The train ride lasts about 1 hour and has one connection stop at Salerno.  From Vietri Sul Mare, you can use the local public transport – SITA buses , to get to other villages. Another option is to take a train directly from Naples to Salerno (a 40-minute ride), and then take the SITA local bus to Amalfi, Maiori, Minori, Ravello, and other villages. It takes a 45-minute drive to reach Amalfi from Salerno. Check SITA bus schedules on the company’s official website . Last but not least, you can take the train to Sorrento, and then switch to one of the SITA buses that serve Amalfi Coast villages. This is a better option if you want to visit Positano or Praiano villages. Keep in mind that an option that includes a local bus can be slow and is not recommended to cruise passengers due to the ship’s limited time in port.
  • TAKE A FERRY : From April to October, you can take a train/ferry to Sorrento, and then take a local bus to Amalfi Coast. An alternative option is to take a train or bus to Salerno, and then take a round-trip ferry or hydrofoil ride to Positano, Minori, and Amalfi. The departure point in Salerno is Concordia Square (Piazza Della Concordia), opposite the train station. Check the ferry connections and timetables here: https://www.livesalerno.com/

15. The Island of Capri

Known as “the Island of Dreams”, Capri is one of the most exclusive Italian resorts and a popular day trip from Naples. The tiny island boasts a great number of natural attractions and historic sights, and its main city bears the same name as the island – Capri.

You can take a boat to the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzura), a magical sea cave boasting incredible blue and silver colors of water that change based on the sunlight coming into the cavern’s mouth.

Faraglioni rocks are another must-see natural treasure of Capri Island, situated in the south of the islet. You can stroll through Marina Grande , the vibrant harbor and the main port of Capri, full of shops, restaurants, and bars where you can savor Italian specialties and great local wines.

There are several churches and historical landmarks nearby, such as the baroque Church of Santo Stefano that dominates the square, or Certosa di San Giacomo (the Charterhouse of St. Giacomo), the 14th-century Carthusian monastery and one of the oldest buildings on the island.

If you are into archeological ruins, head over to Villa Jovis , the impressive ruins of a grand Roman palace dating from 27 AD, located on the northeastern coast of Capri.

  • BOOK A TOUR : The cruise ship shore excursions department normally offers Capri tours, however, I suggest you book this tour with a reputable independent tour operator as it’s cheaper. Check out the best Capri Island tours from Naples

One-Hour PIzza-Making Class Review

Pizza restaurants in naples.

If you simply want to get pizza on your own, there’s no shortage of pizza places in Naples. Beware that Napoli pizza is chewy by nature. The chewiness surprised us because we’re both from New York, where the best pizza is crisp . But part of the joy of traveling is discovering interesting info like the chewiness of pizza in Naples.

We enjoyed our dining experience at 50 Kalo , which has been written up in numerous publications as one of the best pizza restaurants in Naples. It’s affordable, delicious, and the staff is friendly.

They don’t accept reservations, and the walk from the port is around 30 minutes one way. Alternatively, you can take a taxi there or public transportation. But the waterfront walk is beautiful, and we very much enjoyed it as part of our self-guided sightseeing tour of Naples.

Private Tour Review

➜ why you should book a guided tour in advance.

We highly recommend booking a guided tour in advance for Naples if you don’t sign up for an excursion with the cruise.

A guided tour will undoubtedly enhance your appreciation for where you are and what you’re seeing. Because tours start at a specific time and end at a specific time, a tour will ensure you see the hits within a time frame that will get you back to the ship for the all-aboard time.

Lastly, Naples can get incredibly busy during peak seasons when most cruises sail to this Italian hotspot. A tour guide will know how to best navigate the streets of Naples to avoid large crowds.

This option allows you to have more control over your schedule and comfort. You can arrange for a private driver to pick you up from your accommodation in Naples and drive you to the entrance of Mount Vesuvius and other sites along the way.

Port of Naples History

This historic Italian port has a storied past. From ancient times to WWII to the modern day, it's been an important port for the country and for Europe for many centuries.

From the city's founding in 475 AD to when Napoli saw the height of its popularity as “the” city in Europe in the 1200s, the Port of Naples has always been a vital part of the city, whether for commerce or tourism.

Under Bourbon rule in the 1700s , the city was as well known as Paris and London. It was in the 1800s that the first steamship set sail on the Mediterranean from Naples. However, the port saw a decline in the last half of the 19th century. In the 20th century came Fascism and the use of a new Maritime Station in the port in 1932.

The 21st century has seen a renaissance of tourism in Naples, thanks to cruise ships docking in the port and allowing visitors like you to explore this historic city.

Lonely Hedgehog

Naples is the third largest city in Italy, being the capital of the Campania region. It is your landing point on the Amalfi coast where there are many destinations to be seen. So you will want to return again and again for a different experience each time! This Naples cruise port guide will give you the essentials to decide how and where to go from this port of call.

Planning your trip

First of all, there are so many interesting excursions to choose from that will take the stress of planning off of your plate and let you enjoy yourself. I highly recommended the trip to the top of Mount Vesuvius (warning: steep hill walking) and a tour of Pompeii (a very surreal experience). There are also trips to Sorrento and Capri.

Getting from the port into Naples

If you are cost conscious however, there are plenty of other options. With your ship docking directly at the edge of Naples, you can walk into the city to see the many sights. I would suggest heading toward the castle. There is a ramp walkway that takes you around the side to the front. From there, head left to the famous Piazza del Plebiscito, the largest piazza in the city with a Pantheon style building that is free to go into. There are many other great sights and shopping available throughout the area as well. (In addition, a word of warning, I don’t know if this was a seasonal thing. But one of the times we came here there were flies everywhere in the city, constantly landing on you. Hope that doesn’t repeat itself.)

Naples1

Taking a ferry out of Naples

For a ferry to take you to Capri or Sorrento without the astronomical cruise fees, it is just next to the cruise pier. So, when exiting the pier, turn left, it is opposite the castle. This stop is called Molo Beverello.

For a round trip ticket to Capri, expect about 34-45 euros round trip per person, depending on if you book the faster or slower ferries. They range between 45min to an 1 hour 20 travel time. If you book online ahead of time there appears to be an additional booking fee of 10-12 euros. See the  timetable to plan which ones you want to aim for.

For a round trip ticket to Sorrento, expect about 28 euros round trip person. There are a lot fewer ferry times to choose from, and they are all timed at about 40 min travel time. See the  timetable to plan your day accordingly. There is a booking fee online of 6 euros.

Naples cruise and ferry port for tours and tickets

Visitors guide for those wanting ferry from naples or arriving by cruise ship.

Naples Ferry Port - Capri ferry boarding

Naples ferry and cruise port

The main Naples ferry and cruise port is right in the centre of Naples and is a single entity with both cruise and ferry services located all together. The port is referred to as Molo Beverello.

There is a single building with all the ticket desks and a large digital display that tells you at which berth the vessel you require is docked. All berths are next to each other and you just walk a short distance to board.

Naples ferry and cruise port location and transport

The area around Molo Beverello has many hotels, the Naples waterfront hotels are numerous within 5 minutes' walk. Most of the top hotels of Naples are around here reflecting it as being Naples' most elegant and desirable district.

Mollo Beverello is well served by the comprehensive local Naples buses, full details of which are on our Naples public transport page . Frequent buses link with Central Station too, which is to the east of the city centre and too far to walk.

Central Station is the main train station for national trains as well as the private Circumvesuviana rail network serving Pompeii and Sorrento.

The  Alibus Naples airport bus  terminates at Mollo Beverello and takes just 30 minutes to Naples Airport stopping on the way at the main Naples train station, Central Station.

The popular open top  Naples hop-on hop-off sightseeing buses  also stop here and the main terminus of the two routes are a 5-minute walk away. Many of the city sights are within easy walking distance of the ferry/cruise centre including the historic centre. There is a tourist information office where you can pick-up useful maps too.

Top of the page

Ferry and hydrofoil services from naples.

For most visitors it is the ferry services to the islands of Capri and Ischia plus the resort of Sorrento that is the main reason for using the ferry port.

There is a choice of ferry companies all competing against each other on the popular routes. Unfortunately most of the operators websites are only in Italian, the Caremar website being a notable exception. Most allow online bookings.

A typical fast hydrofoil type service will be around an hour to Capri or Ischia.

Frequencies are very good and you should not have to wait long for a service from one of the operators to and from the islands.

Buying tickets for hydrofoil and ferry

You can buy tickets at the port or online.

Alilauro Hydrofoils - between Naples Beverello and Capri, Ischia, Sorrento

Caremar Hydrofoil and Ferries - between Naples Beverello and Capri, Ischia, Procida

Gescab Hydrofoils - between Naples and Capri

NLG Hydrofoils - between Naples and Capri

Medmar Ferries - between Naples and Ischia & Procida

SNAV Ferries - between Naples Beverello and Capri, Ischia, Procida

Other operators, including some of the above, run services much further afield, notably to Sicily.

Cruise ship tours

Unlike some ports, in Naples you walk straight off your ship into the centre of the city.

Those that are independently minded can sightsee at a much lower cost than the cruise line offerings, including trips to Mount Vesuvius or Pompeii as well as the city of Naples.

Naples, Italy – Cruise Port Guide

naples italy cruise port address

What to do in Eight Hours ashore… NAPLES, Italy – a Cruise Port Guide…

Naples, in the region of Campagnia, Italy, is an almost perfect port to visit on your cruise. The unmistakable shape of Vesuvius is first thing you see, sitting on the horizon as you enter the Bay of Naples. Your ship will berth at the deep water harbour of the Stazione Marittima which is close to town, the Metro, railway and to local ferries, right next to Castel Nuovo and the Piazza dal Municipo.

naples italy cruise port address

Naples is a love it or hate it destination! I really like the little back streets and cafes, the museums, galleries and churches, I even quite like the ubiquitous scooters and graffiti and am quite happy wandering the main parts of the city but I do accept that it has a bit of a seedy side and that you really shouldn’t wander too far off the beaten track, especially on your own. There is a lot of talk on cruise forums about bag snatching and pickpocketing but I’m not sure that it is any worse than in many other cities, certainly a bit of common sense it needed but it is not a dangerous city in any real sense although it is true that the Camorra ( Naples mafia) are still active behind the secenes.

naples italy cruise port address

To me Naples is an almost perfect port to visit on your cruise, there is just so much to see and do that it will definitely take more than one or two visits to see it all. The unmistakable shape of Vesuvius appears on the horizon as you enter the Bay of Naples and headfor your berth at the deep water harbour of the Stazione Marittima, right next to Castel Nuovo and the Piazza dal Municipo. Here you are close to town, the Metro, railway and to local ferries.

Viking Sky at Naples Cruise Terminal

This Port Profile is on the city Naples itself…there is much more to see if you travel out of town; Vesuvius, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento, Capri and Ischia just to name a few – but there is a lot to see in Naples without getting on a coach, train or ferry.

naples italy cruise port address

Naples was founded by the Greeks in about 10BC and became part of the Roman Empire in about 4BC. The eruption of Vesuvius in AD79 was visible from Naples and there is a written description of the event by the Roman writer Pliny, who was watching it from the town of Misenum, (now Miseno) just further around the bay of Naples to the west. The town of Herculaneum, directly beneath the volcano, was buried under a sea of lava and mud. The town of Pompeii which was further to the east missed the lava but was hit by a cloud of poisonous gas know as a pyroclastic surge which killed everyone in the town and buried it beneath a thick layer of cinders and ash, preserving it for us to visit today!

Following the fall of the Roman Empire, Naples came under Byzantine rule during which time it flourished. In the years that followed it became part of the Norman kingdom of Sicily and then part of the Angevin kingdom, of which it was the capital city. By 1503 the Spanish had taken control of the town which grew to be the largest city in Italy. Naples was modernised by the Bourbon King Charles III in the 18th century, his ambitious programme of buildings included a Royal Place at Caserta which he based on the palace of Versailles, and the town became an important stop of the ‘Grand’ Tour’ of Europe made by the wealthy and educated of the day.

naples italy cruise port address

In 1860 Naples became part of Garibaldi’s new ‘Unified Italy’ and was a popular desination for musicians artists, architects and playwrights such as Oscar Wilde. You can see the influences of this Art Nuevo period in Piazza Dante and around town but more obvious is the Monumental Fascist architecture, particularly in some of the town major institutions such as the the bank of Naples, the post office and the Stazione Marittima where your ship is berthed. The majority of 1930s architecture was destroyed in WW2 and post war rebuilding was haphazard at best, directed more for their own financial gain by local politicians than with any sense of regeneration or restoration.

naples italy cruise port address

Today Naples is a vibrant and creative city, full of music and song, which celebrates its history whilst looking towards the future. You will find modern art installations such as the Salt Mountain in Piazza del Plebiscito in close proximity to the historical Angovese Castel Nuovo, built in 1279, which is right by the entrance to todays port.

The Cruise Terminal is bright and airy, it has all the usual things including some shops and a small pharmacy, from here it is an easy walk into town. It is easy to explore out from Naples either on organised tours or by yourself on trains or ferries. It is possible to hire a car from just outside the Terminal but unless you are completely happy driving in Europe I would probably avoid the appalling Naples traffic. The ferry terminal (Molo Beverello) is closer to the cruise terminal then any of the rental car offices and, if you want to travel out of town say to Ischia, Capri or Sorrento, a ferry is probably more fun!

There is also a HOHO bus in town if that appeals, there are two intersecting loops that visit many of the main sights such as Museo dell’Opera Duomo, Basilica of Santa Croce, Palazzo Pitti and Teatro Verdi but it travels well out of town to Posillipo and does not go up to Monte Santo, or into the centre of the old town Naples so I would take a look at the map and decide if it is for you. Personally I think you will see more of the city with a combination of walking, buses and the Funicular Railways.

naples italy cruise port address

The Funicular system of trains taking people up to Monte Santo and Chaia (as celebrated in the Neapolitan song Funiculi, Funicular ) was built in 1875 and is one of the real symbols of the city along with Pulcinella (a masked performer that has echoes of the plague doctors of Venice, but whose function to to make people laugh), the hand carved wood Nativity ( Naples is home to workshops that make beautiful hand carved Nativities that are popular all over Italy) and of course pizza, which was invented here in the 18th Century ( apparently in pretty much any restaurant you care to ask!).

Within easy flat walking of the port is Castel Nuevo with its stunning renaissance arched entrance, the 16th century Palazzo Reale and stables, the San Francesco di Paola Church, the Teatro San Carlo, the oldest opera house in Europe Galleria and Galleria Umberto I – a large iron and glass covered shopping area similar to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan.Exit from the Galleria onto the main street in Naples, Via Toledo.

naples italy cruise port address

If you head north you will reach the older area of the city. If you turn right onto Via Capitelli you will be in the Spaccanapoli, a long straight street with various names along its way dating from Roman times that cuts right across the city. It is lined with churches, Palazzos and squares, any or all of which are worth a short visit and walking the shady, deep street is also brief respite from the heat!

naples italy cruise port address

There are some wonderful sculptures in Naples, but two in particular, Veiled Christ by Sanmartino and Modesty by Corradini can be found in the tiny Capella Sansevero just north of Spaccanapoli on Via San dom Maggiore. If you are interested in sculpture then head a bit further north to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale where they have a wonderful collection including the Farnese Bull, the largest group sculpture to have survived from 200BC, and the Farnese Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, there are also some absolutely stunning artefacts and mosaics from Pompeii (especially the recreated Temple of Isis) and many other treasures from the collection built up by the Medici family during the Renaissance.

naples italy cruise port address

Between Spaccanapoli and the Museum you will cross another straight Roman street, the Via dei Tribunali, also lined with shops as well as ancient monasteries, churches and the 13th century Duomo (cathedral) which was built incorporating much older buildings on the site including the mosaic decorated Baptistry which dates from AD550. Next to another church, San Paolo Maggiore, you will find the entrance to one of Naples’ less well known features, the Napoli Sotterranea, a huge network of underground passages, catacombs and aqueducts which are only open for visits on Saturdays and Sundays; dating from Roman times and extended over the centuries they were used in WW2 as shelters during the bombing and many are still used today as interconnecting storage areas and cellars beneath the city.

naples italy cruise port address

You can also access underground Naples in other places, for example the catacombs beneath San Severo & San Gennaro churches, and if such things interest you, you could also visit the Cimitero delle fontanelle where there is a fairly gruesome underground ossuary. All of these attractions are slightly further north of the city as is the lovely Capodimonte Park and Museum.

naples italy cruise port address

This was built as a palace by Charles III to house the Medici collections that belonged to his mother Elizabeth Farnese, it is surrounded by a small park where Charles liked to hunt. This is also where he introduced porcelain manufacture into Italy , the resulting Capodimonte china figures becoming as famous as the Meissen china it was founded to copy. The Queens Parlour in the museum is tiled with nearly 300 tiles of fine porcelain. The whole area is good place to escape from town for a little while on a hot sunny day!

The same is true of Monte Santo which is accessed by the original funicular railway. A short trip to the top is fun to do and you will find the towns Maritime Museum, housed in old monastery with beautiful views out over the Bay of Naples and the port.

naples italy cruise port address

Your will find designer shops in Galleria Umberto 1 and some nice pedestrian shopping areas and pizzerias around Via dei Tribunali. There are street markets on Corso Umberto by the Garibaldi Train Station and Via Chiaia is a pedestrianised street with lots of boutiques. Do not miss the Neapolitan Christmas shops with their famous Nativity scenes – they are mainly found on Spaccanopoli.

The 1950s style Naples of the Elena Farrantes books is still to be found in the Luzatti area and on the island of Ischia where you may well fall across a TV crew filming her new adaptation of My Brilliant Friend for HBO! If you are a fan of the books you might like to try lookingforlila.com or en.platypustour.it to organise a themed tour. On the subject of books the pizzeria that featured in the film of the book ‘Eat, pray, love’ is Da Michele on Via Sersale, 13 – it only serves margherita or marinara pizza but you can’t go to Naples without trying a traditional neapolitan, margherita pizza! It is made with a thin, hand kneaded crust and buffalo milk mozarella cooked quickly in a hot oven.

naples italy cruise port address

Traditional pizzerias like Da Michele and Di Matteo on Via dei Tribunali, 94 have very sparse interiors with small plastic cups for your drink but very cheap prices for a pizza. It’s an experience…

Naples is a port that features on many Mediterranean itineraries so you will probably find yourself there more than once. Although Pompeii, Vesuvius and Capri are the more obvious trips I highly recommend that you spend a day in the town at some point, Naples is a special place that deserves a little exploring!

Naples, Italy

Naples is a cultural center filled with classical Greek and Roman style architecture and bursting with extraordinary art, from modern street murals to ancient works. Take a tour through the city itself, where you can enjoy an authentic slice of Neapolitan pizza as you stroll along cobblestone streets, or branch out to nearby locales for some can't-miss excursions. Naples is a jumping-off point for outings to Pompeii, a village preserved in ash from the A.D. 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius-the still-active volcano that serves as a backdrop for Naples-as well as treks to the Amalfi Coast, one of the most breathtaking shorelines in the world. At the entrancing Isle of Capri, a short boat trip across the Gulf of Naples, you can take a chairlift to the islet's highest point for bird's-eye views or tour the famed Blue Grotto natural sea cave.

Cruises from/to Naples, Italy

Naples, italy cruise port.

Cruise to Naples and enjoy the divine pizza pie, perhaps the city’s most enduring symbol. The city even has regulations for the ingredients used in a Neapolitan pizza. Another Italian classic that is strongly associated with Naples is spaghetti with ragu. Of course, you have to leave room for dessert when you’re in Italy, and Naples has got you covered there with gelato and zeppole, a custard-filled doughnut. As delicious as these dishes are, Naples offers much more than food.
