St. Aloysius Church

St. Aloysius Church in Mangalore is known for its marvellous architecture and interiors. Located in Kodailbail, on the Lighthouse Hill, the church was built in 1880 and features unique paintings by the Italian artist Antonio Moscheni covering most of the walls. The paintings depict Aloysius’s life to whom the chapel and adjacent college are dedicated. One can see several ceiling frescoes of various saints in Christianity and of course spend some time in quietude here. Do not confuse this Sultan’s Battery with the one in Wayanad District of Kerala. This Sultan’s Battery is a watch tower which is located some 4 kilometres from Mangalore at a place called Boloor. The watch tower was constructed in the era of the emperor Tipu Sultan in 1784 AD and is said to be built with the same stones of 23 churches destroyed by Tipu Sultan. Though it is a watch tower but it looks much like a fort with mounting places for cannon. There is an underground storage area under the tower which was once used for storing gunpowder. If one climbs up to the top, he is guaranteed a panoramic view of Arabian Sea. This place is a blend of natural and manmade beauty. It is now a nearly deserted place with a few shacks and a boating club nearby, but is gathering popularity among tourists because of the pervading eternal bliss of nature. 3. Kadri Manjunath Temple

The temple is located on the hills of Kadri and is said to have been built during the 10th or 11th century.

The bronze (panchaloha) idol of Lokeshwara in the temple is said to be the earliest of the South Indian temples, standing around 5 feet tall. On its pedestal, there is an inscription dating from 968 A.D.

The annual Jathra Mahothsava of Kadri Manjunath temple takes place in the month of January. The festival begins on the day of Makara Sankranthi and is celebrated for over nine days. Thousands of devotees visit the temple to offer pujas and prayers on these special days.

4. Sultan Battery

Sultan Battery is a watchtower that was constructed by Tippu Sultan in the year 1784. The purpose of the watchtower was to keep an eye out for vessels entering the Gurupura River.

Composed of black stones, the watchtower was designed to look like a small fortress. This tower is now in ruins, having failed to withstand the test of time and weather.

However, the watchtower offers a beautiful view of the backwaters of the Arabian Sea. The historical significance of the place makes Sultan battery one of the most famous places to visit around Mangalore.

The museum was founded in the year 1913, when an Italian Jesuit priest, Chiapi, donated over 2000 different types of minerals, a herbarium, and a collection of Roman coins.

The museum also exhibits the De Dion car, which was the first car used in Mangalore way back in 1906. 4. Sultan Battery – The Historical Watchtower

The Sultan Battery is the watch tower constructed in the era of emperor Tipu Sultan. It is the most fascinating place in Mangalore as it gives beautiful views from there. Mainly the export of minerals like granite, Manganese, and iron ore along with coffee, spices, and cashew are done through the New Mangalore Port. This place is a must-visit on your trip to Mangalore. The beach is just a 16-minute drive from Mangalore, about nine km.

Kudroli Gokarnath Temple

This temple was built for the Bilava community, who weren’t allowed to enter any temples back then. The temple has Lord Shiva as the deity and is famous for its beautifully designed interiors. The temple spans several acres and is a famous site for all pilgrims to offer their prayers daily. The temple takes roughly 13 minutes to reach via road and is about five km away from the city. 

St. Aloysius Chapel

It is a catholic church set on the lighthouse hill. The church has many wall paintings painted back in the 15 th century and is very serene. The church environment offers solace to all troubled minds. The view of the Arabian sea from the church’s campus is also a picturesque site. The church can be reached via road in about 16 minutes from the city. 

Kadri Manjunatha Temple

This temple is built in Vijaynagri style at the base of the Kadri hills. The temple is surrounded by caves that have paintings that can be dated back to prehistoric times. Buddhist pilgrims initially used the temple, but as Buddhism declined, the temple was renovated multiple times and came to become a Shiva temple. Many pilgrims visit this temple every day. It will take about 11 minutes to reach the temple from the heart of the city. 

Sultan Battery

Tipu Sultan constructed this fort-like structure to keep a look at the warships entering the kingdom through the Gurpur River. The battery, which was unable to withstand the ruins of time and water, is almost in ruins now. It offers a great spot to click pictures and is visited by many people daily. Surathkal Beach

Kadri Manjunatheswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Manjunatha, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Situated on the Kadri hills in Mangalore, the temple consists of various other deities like Machendranath, Gorakhnath, Shringinath, Lokeshwara, Manjushri, and Buddha.

The elevated point of the temple complex has many water ponds and a natural spring called Gomukha. Many people take a bath here as it is believed that the water here flows from river Bhageerathi in Kashi which would clean away all negativity. A dip in the holy water is auspicious before entering the temple to worship. There is a 5 feet tall Deepasthambha in front of the temple. It is illuminated with Diyas during Deepothsava which is a beautiful sight to behold.

2. Someshwara Beach

Someshwara Beach is a serene getaway located in coastal Karnataka. The beach has a long and beautiful coastline with shining sand and is filled with rock boulders called Rudra Shile. The beach is named after Lord Somanatha whose temple is located on the seashore.

It is a rocky beach with a great horizon view in the evening, so you can enjoy viewing the sunset with your loved ones. It also has a hill named Ottinene Hill where you can view the river Netravati confluence with the Arabian Sea, forming a beautiful scenic spot of the Ullal Delta. Kadri Gokarnanatheshwara temple hosts many festivals like Maha Shivaratri, Krishnashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Nagara Panchami, Deepavali, Navaratri, and Sri Narayana Jayanthi. The Navratri and Dussehra celebration are very prominent in this temple popularly called Mangalore Dasara. The idols of Sharada Matha and Maha Ganapati, life-size idols of Nava Durgas are later taken for a grand procession through the city which attracts many people.

4. Kudroli Sri Bhagavathi Temple

Kudroli Sri Bhagavathi Temple is a historical temple located in Mangalore. It is dedicated to the worship of Shri Cheerumbha Bhagavathi. It is beautifully designed and renovated with black granite and intricate wood carving by various artists. You can also admire the beautiful single-stone granite carving called Veerastambha which records heroic deeds. You can also see the statue of Shri Narayana Guru carved in white marble which is famously situated at the entrance here.

The Kudroli Sri Bhagavathi Temple holds a Nadavali festival once every year in the month of March. The temple also hosts a grand festival called Kaliyata once in 25 years which is a mix of all festivals held in 17 other temples spread across Udupi. These festivals are attended by many people from all over India.

5. St. Aloysius Chapel

St Aloysius Chapel is a Christian chapel located on Lighthouse Hill in Mangalore. The interior of the chapel is beautifully decorated with paintings by Antonio Moscheni that cover almost all of the walls. It has a line of circular pillars that holds an arched ceiling with oil paintings that depict the life of Aloysius Gonzaga to whom the chapel is dedicated.

St. Aloysius Chapel is an architectural and artistic marvel that attracts people from all over the world. Other paintings in the chapel beautifully depict the life events of Jesus Christ like birth, baptism, the wedding feast at Cana, and the crucifixion of Jesus. This chapel also offers panoramic unobstructed views of the Arabian Sea as it is located at an elevation.

6. Mangaladevi Temple

Mangaladevi Temple is a revered temple located at Bolara in Mangalore. It is a Hindu shrine dedicated to the worship of the goddess Shakti. The presiding deity of the temple is the form of Goddess Mangaladevi and Mangalore city gets its name from her. The temple is beautifully designed with a two-storeyed gopura in which the upper floor is used as a hall of drum beating during various festivals.

Built with laterite, the temple has a beautiful conical roof made of terracotta tile supported from inside by a wooden structure. This temple is famous for hosting special pujas during Navratri and the Rathothsava during Dussehra. The goddess is mounted on the grand chariot and pulled with thick ropes by a large number of devotees in a procession that goes to Marnamikatte, where the goddess and the Shami tree are worshiped together.

7. Ullal Beach

Ullal Beach is a popular tourist spot in Mangalore near the Western Ghats. It gives a panoramic view of the coastline of the Arabian sea. The coastline has sparkling sand with clear water reflecting the blue sky. It has spots for capturing beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

The views from Ullal Beach are captivating. You can spend hours on the beach as it is less crowded than other beaches. It is surrounded by stretches of coconut trees, tall lush casuarinas, and dense palm trees. You can also visit the ruined fort of Abbakka Devi and the Jain temples located along the coastline. Someshwara Temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. The deity is believed to be residing in the temple in the form of Lord Somanatha. The temple is located on Someshwara Beach near the Arabian Sea at the Western Ghats in Ullal.

Someshwara Temple also acts as a pilgrimage center for performing Pitrakrayas which are the last rituals performed for the departed souls by Hindus.
