The Lottie Cooper Shipwreck site in Sheboygan, Wisconsin showcases the remains of the three-masted schooner known as the Lottie Cooper. The ship wrecked during a roaring gale off of Sheboygan in April of the year 1896. The remains today are open for the public to view throughout the year in DeLand Park at the town’s waterfront. The wreckage of the Lottie Cooper was discovered while constructing the Harbor Marina, and is displayed today as the only display of its kind anywhere in the Great Lakes. I love the installation around the Stefanie H. Weill building due to the endless activities to do in the area!

The Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts is a historic venue offering various art performances in Sheboygan.

Head over to John Michael Kohler Arts Center to enjoy the quirky art gallery with access to the historic house of the Kohler family. 

Notably known as the founder of the Kohler Company, John Michael Kohler also served as the 27th mayor of Sheboygan. Hence, seeing his name in many prominent establishments around the city is unsurprising.

The Breaker Bay Waterpark at Blue Harbor Resort offers a day pass for visitors every Sunday.

But, I recommend booking your stay at Blue Harbor Resort if you’re looking for things to do in Sheboygan with kids. 

As staying guests at Blue Harbor Resort , you will get free access to the waterpark and enjoy its top-notch facilities during its operational hours – including hot tubs, tube slides, and a surf simulator!

5. Fishing Charters on Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan is one of the best fishing destinations in the Midwest, so you want to take advantage of this excursion when visiting Sheboygan in the summer. 

Several operators offer fishing charters departing from Sheboygan Harbor. 

However, for the best experience, you may consider booking a group fishing charter at Sea Dog Sportfishing Charter of Sheboygan. 

Lake Michigan is renowned for its abundant salmon, trout, and game fish, making it an attractive summer fishing destination.

Before this excursion, I knew nothing about fishing, but the crew helped me tremendously to learn about the maritime around the lake – and even caught a few fish during this tour!

The Sea Dog Sportfishing Charter in Sheboygan uses advanced fish locator technology on its fleet, and summer is arguably the best time to book an excursion with them. 

I definitely recommend it if you’re looking for some fun things to do in Wisconsin in the summer!

6. Sheboygan County Marsh Park

The 30-acre marsh park is a perfect spot to visit during the summer in Sheboygan.

Whether you’re looking for the best Southern Wisconsin hiking trails or want to go camping to enjoy the warm season, Sheboygan Broughton Marsh Park offers various things to do in Sheboygan WI in summer!

The Marsh Lodge around the park has plenty of taverns and restaurants where you can indulge in the best local dishes in town. 

My personal favorite is the Three Guys and a Grill Restaurant , which serves various menus, including charcoal-grilling BBQs that are perfect for the summer.

Sheboygan County Marsh Park is also great for endless outdoor activities in Wisconsin, with 50 campsites around the marsh.

Home to some of the most scenic hiking trails in Wisconsin , you can also try some fun summer activities like birdwatching or foot golf around the park!

7. Golfing at Whistling Straits

Since its operation in 1998, Whistling Straight has become a world-class golf destination. 

Its two championship courses were designed by Pete Dye, a well-known golf course designer who designed over 200 courses worldwide in his lifetime! 

If you enjoy golf with the magnificent view of Lake Michigan, you won’t be disappointed taking the golf course at Whistling Straits. 

At Whistling Straits, you can choose one of the best golf course packages designed by Pete Dye: To Dye Four or Champion’s Trail.

Both packages already include accommodations and the golf car and caddie fees. The only difference is the duration. 

You can get three tee times for Champion’s Trail and four for To Dye Four. 

For the best experience, you can also opt for the Experience Kohler package.

8. Sheboygan Indian Mound Park

Situated in the Black River area of Sheboygan, you can visit an archaeological site featuring Native American burial mounds dating back over a millennium ago at Indian Mound Park. 

I find this site so interesting, as the park offers a combination of natural and historic sites—making it one of the best things to do near Sheboygan Wisconsin. 

If you’re on the lookout for an educational trip in Wisconsin, Indian Mound Park is absolutely a must-visit!

The walking trails around the park are well-maintained, making it easy to explore independently. 

You can also find the Open Mound Exhibits with interpretive signs to learn more about each artifact. 

It’s not everywhere you can find a piece of Native American history, so visit Sheboygan Indian Mound Park with its 18 burial mounds.

It is a great learning experience if you’re looking for things to do around Sheboygan!

9. Sheboygan County Historical Museum

When visiting Sheboygan County in Wisconsin, I recommend stopping in Sheboygan Falls, a charming town with various historic attractions. 

From exploring River Park to taking a tour at the Vollrath Mansion, there’s no better things to do in Sheboygan Falls than visiting one of the must-visit museums: Sheboygan County Historical Museum . 

With over 30,000 artifacts telling the area’s history, you can learn anything about Sheboygan and beyond—including Wisconsin’s first cheese factory!

10. Dining and Shopping in Downtown Sheboygan

As one of the best lake towns in Wisconsin , Sheboygan also has numerous waterfront restaurants that offer a unique dining experience with some good meals. 

Visit Sheboygan’s waterfront restaurants at Riverfront or South Pier Drives for the best local dining scene in the city. 

Whether you love Italian food or prefer grilled meat for dinner in the summer, you can find numerous waterfront restaurants in Sheboygan around these areas!

I also recommend this Sheboygan Scavenger Hunt where you can explore downtown Sheboygan and visit some places for locals in the city – including pubs and shops in Sheboygan.

1. Explore Lake Michigan

Ocean-like views, sounds of crashing waves, warm, powdery sand and refreshingly cool water —  Lake Michigan is a beach-lover’s oasis. Kettle Moraine State Forest offers a slew of hiking and biking paths that weave through rolling hills, prairies, forests and more. When the weather turns cold and the snow starts to fall, Sheboygan takes on a whole new demeanor. Residents bundle up in coats, hot chocolate becomes a go-to beverage and sparkling snow blankets the region in white. While some might choose to stay warm and cozy inside, exploring the region’s wintry landscape is also a must-experience activity. In fact, the county offers 228 miles of public snowmobile trails .

7. Catch a Race at Road America

Road America , a permanent road racing track in Plymouth, offers excitement like no other. This 640-acre park hosts events such as the IndyCar Series, NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series, IMSA SportsCars, MotoAmerica and GT World Challenge America. While here, attendees can utilize the area’s on-site campsite, cabins, concessions and much more.

8. Sample Some Chocolate

You haven’t truly experienced chocolate until you’ve tasted the decadent confections crafted in Sheboygan County. Victorian Chocolate Shoppe in downtown Sheboygan sells 80 varieties of homemade hand-dipped chocolates. Its signature product is a truffle, which comes in 27 flavors, from cherry cheesecake to Irish cream. Another must-visit shop is Kohler Chocolates , which serves up terrapins (similar to turtles) in flavors including original buttery, blackstrap, java and peanut butter. While you’re there, make sure to also try the shop’s decadent hot chocolate and ice cream.

Need a brewsky? The Sheboygan region is home to several brewing companies that serve up some delicious brews. The Plymouth Brewing Company offers a wide selection of unique beers, from a pistachio nut brown ale to a peanut butter and chocolate imperial stout. Also a favorite among the locals is 3 Sheeps Brewing Co. in Sheboygan. Its dog-friendly taproom makes it the perfect place to grab a drink with friends and their pups. Try the Chaos Pattern hazy IPA or the Bon Bon stout.

10. Check Out Miesfeld’s

Given that Sheboygan is referred to as “The Bratwurst Capital of the World,” sampling a local brat is considered a must-do activity. Miesfeld’s Triangle Market has been part of the Sheboygan community since 1941, and its national award-winning brats are quite the crowd-pleaser. Brats come in flavors like garlic, nacho cheese, caveman, jalapeno cheddar and chorizo.

11. Attend a Festival

The calendar is packed with fun events throughout the county each year, from live music in the summer to holiday fests in the winter. One that comes back year after year is the Midsummer Festival of the Arts , which is held on the grounds of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and the City Green . The event features more than 100 artist booths, where attendees can enjoy and purchase artworks and meet their makers.

How To Spend A Perfect Weekend In Scenic Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Sheboygan, Wisconsin, with its unique location on Lake Michigan, is known for awesome freshwater surfing. In fact, Sheboygan has earned the nickname “Malibu of the Midwest” for good reasons (though its name is thought to be a Chippewa word meaning “passageway or waterway between the lakes”). The cold water surfing may draw locals and visitors alike to the beach, but the waves of Lake Michigan are not the only thing that the town has going for it. 

Sheboygan is a hotbed of great places to eat, features an outstanding art scene, and outdoor activities. From hiking the dunes at Kohler-Andrae State Park to seeing your favorite children’s books come alive at Bookworm Gardens, this city with a population of over 60,000 located just an hour north of Milwaukee is a fantastic family weekend destination.

We were hosted at a couple of the restaurants and were shown around town by Visit Sheboygan. I wish we could have stayed longer. All my opinions are my own.

Things To Do In Sheboygan 

Sheboygan’s proximity to Lake Michigan makes it a perfect draw for those that enjoy the water. From an exceptional beachside park and marina to the restaurants located along the downtown Riverwalk, the lake and river take center stage in Sheboygan. There is also plenty to do away from the water with a world-class arts center, a wonderful botanical garden, and more. Making a weekend out of a visit is effortless.

Explore Kohler-Andrae State Park

Kohler-Andrae State Park is among the most popular parks in the Wisconsin state parks system. Campers, hikers, and beach fans sing its praises. Located about two miles south of Sheboygan, there are seven different trails to hike that take you through the abundant natural beauty of the park. You’ll see sand dunes, white pines, and marshy areas. Birdwatching is a popular activity, with over 150 species known to call Kohler-Andrae home at least part of the year. Other recreational activities include horseback riding, biking, kayaking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing in the winter.

Stroll Through Bookworm Gardens

Bookworm Gardens is nothing short of an oasis in the city. This botanical garden is made up of over 70 individual gardens that are inspired by popular classic and modern children’s books. Jump on the magic school bus, step inside the little house that inspired the Little House In The Big Woods book by Laura Ingles Wilder, or clean up Harry the dirty dog. Bookworm Gardens is a treat for all ages, whether you love the books or appreciate the beautiful flowers and greenery. And, it’s free, but you do have to make pre-reservations. The gardens are open from May through October and closed on Monday.

The arts are very much alive in Sheboygan, and the downtown John Michael Kohler Arts Center is in the center of the art action. Founded in 1967, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center is a not-for-profit dedicated to making the arts accessible to a broad audience. Featuring nine galleries, a theater, meeting spaces, classrooms, a café called ARTcafe, and so much more. The bathrooms at the arts center are part of the many displays, and you are highly encouraged to take a look at all of them. 

Opened in 2021, the newest addition is the John Michael Kohler Arts Preserve . The preserve is an internationally renowned collection of artist-built environments. It began as an idea back in the 1970s when Ruth DeYoung Kohler visited Fred Smith’s property in Phillips, Wisconsin, where he had created a whole environment around the concrete sculptures he made on his property. This sparked an idea to create these artists’ environments from the massive collection acquired through the years by the arts center. The new preserve sits on 38 acres and is 56,000 square feet on three floors. 

Take In Sailing Lessons

The Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan (SEAS) wants to create an extensive boating community in Sheboygan. It offers inexpensive lessons like its two-hour First Sail class that introduces the beginner to the basics of sailing with a 100 percent hands-on approach. Even the weekend visitor will enjoy getting out on the water and enjoying the Lake Michigan shoreline from a fun perspective and learning a new skill at the same time. 

James Tellen Concrete Park

The James Tellen Concrete Park is home to over thirty life-sized and miniature concrete sculptures. John Tellen created his concrete art from 1942 until his death in 1957. His subjects are religious and mythical figures, and the woodland backdrop of the former Tellen summer home provides the perfect setting for his work. A walk through the park provides viewers with an eerily cleansing feeling. If you’re lucky, you will spot deer and other wildlife. The Tellen’s log cabin, the “brat house,” and a boy scout house serving as an “artist in residence” retreat are also located on the property. The park is always open and free to the public. We could have stayed there all day.

Deland Park

Deland Park , also known as north beach, is the place to catch the surfers when it’s cold and windy. The locals spend their beach time here, and you can also access the walkway to the lighthouse. A major attraction within the park is the wreckage of the Lottie Cooper , a schooner that sank just off the harbor in 1894. 

Best Restaurants In Sheboygan 

In recent years, Sheboygan has become a foodie destination, with the 1991 James Beard Semi-Finalist chef Stefano Viglietti opening his Trattoria Stefano in 1994. Since then, he has opened three more restaurants in Sheboygan (three are located on 8th street within the same block) which has helped to put the town of Sheboygan on the culinary map. You won’t go hungry here!

Field To Fork

Field To Fork , the third restaurant to open under chef Viglietti, is open for breakfast and lunch. As the name implies, the restaurant uses local farmers and producers to source its ingredients and then craft menu items that are creative and delicious. With an industrial vibe, there is inside seating on two levels and ample outside seating. The Italian egg-white omelet was my favorite. 

Parker John’s BBQ And Pizza

Enjoy a riverfront view while sipping your loaded bloody Mary at Parker John’s BBQ & Pizza . It’s well known throughout northeastern Wisconsin for its tasty pizzas and best barbecue this side of Kansas City. Try the smokehouse mac and cheese.

Majerle’s Black River Grill

Order an Old-Fashioned as you’re waiting for a table in this authentic Wisconsin supper club. We were hosted here, and I have to say its Old-Fashioned beats all — brussels sprouts and all! Majerle’s Black River Grill is housed in a log cabin in a woodland setting. Watch the deer frolic outside the large windows as you dine on your steak and shrimp. It’s a small place, so reservations are recommended, but I guarantee it will be worth it. Majerle’s is a well-kept secret among the locals. 

Duke Of Devon

Located on the riverfront and number four of chef Viglietti’s restaurants, Duke Of Devon is modeled after the classic English pub. The inside is friendly and warm, and there is a nice size outdoor seating area facing the river.  Dinner here takes me back to a vacation in the English countryside — menu suggestions: Have the fish and chips or the poutine. Of course, this Texan had to have a Wisconsin grilled cheese — it was delish!

IL Ritrovo Pizza

IL Ritrovo is a VPN certified Neapolitan pizzeria and the second restaurant of Stefano Viglietti. The wood-fired pizzas made here come out of an authentic oven made in Italy that I must say is a piece of artwork in itself.  In my opinion, the pizza here is like none I’ve ever had, and patrons drive from miles away just to experience them. Try the boscaiola!

City Bakery LLC

City Bakery located downtown can be called a Sheboygan institution. Locally owned since 1939, it has been the local’s favorite place to buy pastries, cakes, pretzels, and Fleishbrok. I would say, hands down, its classic Sheboygan hard roll is the local favorite, and you usually have to call and order them because they sell out so fast.

Blue Harbor is the ultimate place to stay in Sheboygan. It’s located right on the waterfront with access to South Beach and offers a variety of suites and villa options depending on the number of people you have in your party. The indoor waterpark, restaurants, and event space make it a destination in itself. 

Inn On Woodlake

The Inn On Woodlake is situated on its own 11-acre lake with a beach. It has many guestroom options as well as 10 multi-bedroom suites. Make sure to stop and visit the Kohler Design Center if you stay in Kohler. 

La Quinta Inn By Wyndham

Located on Kohler Memorial Drive, La Quinta Inn by Wyndham is a nice hotel chain with easy access to downtown Sheboygan. With free parking, breakfast, and Wi-Fi, it’s a satisfying choice after a long day experiencing all Sheboygan has to offer. 

Sheboygan is the brat capital of the world, and every summer, the locals celebrate with Brat Days, a weekend festival honoring that special sausage. If you want to eat your Sheboygan brat like the locals, make sure and ditch the hot dog bun and put two brats on a Sheboygan hard roll.

The three-masted Great Lakes schooner Lottie Cooper sank in the Sheboygan harbor during a storm in 1894. Most of the crew survived, except for one lowly soul who drowned while trying to float to shore on some wood planks. The wreck was discovered in 1992 and an 89-foot section was brought to the surface where you can walk through it today . There’s even a haunted yacht club nearby.

5. Railroad Museum

The Sheboygan Railroad Museum is home to literature, videos, and artifacts related to all eras of railroad history. But most importantly, they have 8 elaborately detailed miniature model railroad displays in varying scales, including one that kids (or kids at heart) can operate.

Part of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the Art Preserve is dedicated to exhibiting artist-built environments, such as when an artist transforms their home into an art piece, or fills their yard with sculpture. Some of Wisconsin’s own eccentric creatives are represented here, such as Fred Smith whose Concrete Park in Phillips, WI draws countless visitors, and Mary Nohl, the so-called “ Witch of Fox Point .”

7. Haunted Asylum

Commonly referred to as the Sheboygan County Asylum (though the asylum was in a different location) the imposing remains of the Sheboygan County Comprehensive Health Care Center has taken on a peculiar afterlife since the facility closed in 2002. For years, curious teens were arrested and fined for trespassing while exploring its desolate halls for evidence of the spectral activity experienced by workers while the hospital was still in operation. Eventually the building opened for tours and ghost hunts, and has since been visited by famous paranormal investigators for Travel Channel series Destination Fear and Kindred Spirits .

Operated by the Sheboygan Jaycees for nearly 50 years, the Dominion of Terror haunted house is testament not only to their commitment to their community, but also to scaring the crap out of you. Or urine, as one story goes. Dominion of Terror is housed inside a huge historic building some workers think may have some of its own real ghosts based on personal experiences they’ve had. Not that it needs it, though, because this unique and innovative haunt is bursting at the seams with scares. Not to mention they tear the scenes down each year and build everything new from scratch every year, so you’ll never have the same experience twice!

These are the arenas and stadiums that Wisconsin sports teams have called home, past and present

Fiserv Forum gets the national spotlight this week with the arrival of the Republican National Convention, which also is making use of the UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena right down the street. The venues used to have a third stadium situated between them, the Bradley Center, creating an entire series of downtown stadium blocks on Phillips Avenue.

Hop on the interstate that cuts through downtown, and you'll see the towering spires of the American Family Field roof rising into the air, where the Milwaukee Brewers are playing below. Neither Milwaukee pro-sports venue, however, is more iconic than Wisconsin's most hallowed stadium, historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

One of the greatest venues in all of professional sports, the "Frozen Tundra" has been home to one of football's iconic franchises, playing in the relatively tiny hamlet of Green Bay (population of roughly 106,000) and selling out at such a clip that fans famously sit on a season-ticket waiting list for decades.

The building has undergone multiple renovations, including one finished in 2015, and has evolved from a corrugated-green perimeter to a stately building of brick and glass, surrounded by tailgate-friendly lots and neighborhoods.

The venue was home to the 1967 Ice Bowl, one of the most legendary games in NFL history.

Today, it's the home field for Green Bay East High School, a downsized version of its former self when it served as home to the Packers. The once horseshoe-shaped stadium grew from a roughly 5,000-seat venue in 1925 to 25,000 before the Packers abandoned it after the 1956 season. While Green Bay won six NFL titles when City Stadium was its home, the venue never hosted a championship game. Green Bay served as host to the title game in 1939 but played in West Allis, which had a  greater capacity at the state fairgrounds.

American Family Field

Though construction of the venue was plagued by a crane accident that killed three workers and delayed opening by a year, its completion marked a new era for Brewers baseball. The retractable roof has helped generate a spike in attendance that places the smallest market in the league among the top half in attendance and an organization that had been to just two playoffs in three decades has been to seven postseasons in the years since.

Constructed in the Menomonee Valley adjacent to old Milwaukee County Stadium before its deconstruction, the venue is surrounded by ample parking lots, enabling fans to participate in the ages-old tailgating custom. And while many fans still can't get over the name change that dissolved the marriage of a distinctly Milwaukee brand in Miller with the baseball team, it remains one of the state's most impressive architectural feats.

Milwaukee County Stadium

We don't mention the championships won by the Green Bay Packers above, but the NFL franchise played two to four games at the venue each year from 1953 to 1994 before relocating the entirety of its home schedule to Lambeau Field. Brett Favre's famous dive over the goal line to defeat Atlanta in 1994 marked the end of an era. The dual-city setup remains partially in place today, with the "Gold Package" season-ticket holders from Milwaukee getting two (and now sometimes three) home games per year.

But this venue was built for baseball, initially conceived for the minor-league Milwaukee Brewers but instead becoming home to the Milwaukee Braves, a franchise that had relocated from Boston. The first venue in the United States to be built entirely with public money, the stadium drew league-leading crowds and housed teams full of stars, including the great Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron. In 1954, it was portrayed on the first cover of Sports Illustrated . The Braves won the 1957 World Series over the New York Yankees and went to the seventh game of the World Series in 1958 before falling to those same Yankees. But that was the apex; the team's competitiveness began to slowly dwindle thereafter.

When the team moved to Atlanta after the 1965 season, it left a gaping hole in the Wisconsin sports fabric.

But Bud Selig worked tirelessly to bring baseball back, and he successfully brought the Seattle Pilots to Milwaukee in 1970, where they were rebranded the Brewers . The franchise reached the playoffs for the first time in 1981 and went to the World Series in 1982.

Borchert Field

A casualty of the new dawn of Milwaukee County Stadium, the beating heart of baseball in the city was deconstructed to surprisingly little fanfare in 1952. The venue had hosted numerous teams and legendary players, including the short-lived Milwaukee Badgers of the NFL (1922-26), the Milwaukee Bears of the Negro National League (1923), the Milwaukee Chicks of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (1944) and even the Packers for one game in 1933.

The field was renamed for Otto Borchert in 1927 after Borchert, part of a prominent brewing family and owner of the Milwaukee Brewers in the American Association, died. After Borchert Field was torn down, the city replaced it with a tot lot, but only for a while. That, too, was cleared, as part of the construction of I-43: If you take the northbound on-ramp or southbound off-ramp at Locust Street, you're in "Borchert's Orchard," which was a colloquial name for the venue.

The Brewers (the version before the current team that moved to Milwaukee in 1970) played only briefly as a major-league team in 1891 — even then, relocated to the new league in August of that season — and otherwise existed as a minor-league franchise. That squad lasted in any capacity only from 1886 to 1892, but the field continued to host games and welcomed barnstormers.

Wisconsin State Fair Park

• Location : 640 S. 84th St., West Allis
• Home to: Green Bay Packers (1934-1951), auto racing
• Championship teams: 1936, 1939, 1944
• Opened: 1891
• Team left: 1951

Using Packers historian Cliff Christl as a guide , the field where the Packers played a couple games a year was laid out in front of the racetrack's old concrete grandstand, and the seating arrangements underwent a number of reconstructions. But by 1939, capacity was up to 24,700, with more seats added for the 1939 championship game, bringing capacity to 32,000 for a game in which the Packers defeated the New York Giants. Packers players recalled being so far from the seating areas that they couldn't even hear the fan reactions.

The Packers left the fairgrounds to play their Milwaukee slate at County Stadium, but when the stadium didn't open in 1952, the team played one season at Marquette Stadium at 35th and West Clybourn, a venue first built in 1924 for Marquette University football teams.

The state fair grounds are also home to the Milwaukee Mile Speedway, a mile oval track that first opened in 1903 as a dirt track and was paved in 1954. The venue has been home to a number of IndyCar and NASCAR series races over the years, including the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2023 and 2024 and IndyCar in 2024 and 2025.

UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena

With all due respect to UW-Milwaukee, this venue may forever be known as the MECCA. It's the place where the high-flying Bucks first began their tenure with legendary big man Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who led the fledgling franchise to an NBA title in 1971. It's where Marquette and colorful coach Al McGuire built an empire of their own. It's the building that housed the famous gaudy golden floor designed by artist Robert Indiana.

Though the big-league teams have relocated to the bigger, brighter venue to the north, it's still where you can find the Milwaukee Admirals minor-league hockey and Milwaukee Wave professional indoor soccer squads. The Wave has won four of its seven championships during its stay, and the Admirals have two championships (although neither while calling the current venue home).

The NBA's Milwaukee Hawks with rookie of the year and future NBA Hall of Famer Bob Pettit played there in the building's early years, and the UWM men's basketball team still plays home games there.

Bradley Center

• Location : 1001 N. Phillips Ave. (previously Fourth Street)
• Home to: Milwaukee Bucks (National Basketball Association, 1988-2018), Marquette men's basketball team (NCAA Division I, 1988-2018)
• Opened: 1988
• Closed: 2018
• Capacity: 18,633
• Also known as: BMO Harris Bradley Center

In 1985, an astonishing thing happened: the city of Milwaukee was gifted a sports arena.

It was essentially a giant donation from Jane Pettit, whose father, Harry Lynde Bradley, had been one of the founders of Allen-Bradley. In February 1985, Rockwell International purchased Allen-Bradley for more than $1.6 billion, the largest acquisition in Wisconsin history, and the coffers of the newly established Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation were suddenly very full. As the deal was heading toward completion, James Fitzgerald announced Feb. 5 he was going to sell the Milwaukee Bucks.

On March 1, 1985, Wisconsin businessman Herb Kohl was announced as the buyer, and four days later, the Pettits said they'd finance the construction of an arena and give it to Milwaukee . The price tag of the Bradley Center initially was announced in the ballpark of $30 million to $40 million, believed to be the largest donation to the community in Milwaukee history. It wound up being $90 million.

Though hockey was the Pettits' first love, Milwaukee never succeeded in attracting an NHL franchise to the venue. Instead, the Bradley Center served as home to the Bucks, Milwaukee Admirals minor-league hockey team, Marquette men's basketball team, Milwaukee Wave professional indoor soccer and two incarnations of the Milwaukee Mustangs Arena Football League team.

Fiserv Forum, opened in 2018, provided a step forward once the Bradley Center had grown out-of-date. Oddly enough, the Bradley Center did not outlive the stadium it replaced, the neighboring Milwaukee Arena that became the Bucks' first home when the franchise moved to town. That venue, today the UW-Milwaukee Arena, still stands, years after the Bradley Center was razed.

Camp Randall Stadium

• Location : 1440 Monroe St., Madison
• Home to: Wisconsin Badgers football (NCAA Division I)
• Opened: 1917
• Capacity: 80,321

The facility has undergone numerous renovations over the years, including a big one that finished in 2022 , but it has remained the beating heart of Wisconsin athletics for generations. Constructed on the grounds of a former Union army training camp during the Civil War, the land was used by UW athletics teams even before 1900 before the concrete-and-steel stadium was first constructed.

Fans perform "Jump Around" after the third quarter of football games, the most nationally recognizable component of the stadium's gameday atmosphere, and the venue also hosts large-scale events like graduation. The Packers have played preseason games there, and the grounds also serve as home to the Badgers' athletic offices and football practice facility.

University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse

• Location : 1450 Monroe St., Madison
• Home to: Wisconsin Badgers basketball (NCAA Division I, 1930-1998), Wisconsin Badgers women's volleyball (NCAA Division I), Wisconsin Badgers wrestling (NCAA Division I)
• Championship teams: 1941 (UW men's basketball), 2021 (women's volleyball)

Directly connected to Camp Randall Stadium is another legendary building, one that served as home to the men's and women's basketball teams until the construction of the Kohl Center, which opened in 1998. Now, it's primarily recognized as the home to the championship-caliber women's volleyball team at UW but has hosted Badgers wrestling since the 1930s and numerous high school state events in basketball and wrestling.

Kohl Center

• Location : 601 W. Dayton St., Madison
• Home to: Wisconsin Badgers basketball (NCAA Division I), Wisconsin Badgers hockey (NCAA Division I)
• Championship teams: 2006 (UW men's and women's hockey), 2007, 2009, 2011 (UW women's hockey)

Named for former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl, who donated $25 million to the project, the venue has become home to Badgers basketball and men's hockey as well as women's hockey before that program moved to newly opened LaBahn Ice Arena in 2012. It's also been home to numerous high school state basketball tournaments.

Other major sports venues in Wisconsin

• ABC Supply Stadium (217 Shirland Ave., Beloit). Home to the Class A Beloit Sky Carp (currently affiliated with the Miami Marlins), the venue opened in 2021. Once known as the Beloit Snappers, the team was affiliated with the Brewers from 1982-2004.
• Alliant Energy Center (1919 Alliant Energy Center Way, Madison). Formerly known as the Dane County Coliseum, the venue has as much history as any building in Wisconsin, formerly the home to Wisconsin men's hockey from 1967-98 (the program won national titles in 1973, 1977, 1981, 1983 and 1990). The Milwaukee Bucks routinely played games there in the early years of the franchise, including playoff games ( during a championship run, no less ).
• Al McGuire Center (770 N. 12th St., Milwaukee). Opened in 2004, the on-campus venue provides an intimate environment for Marquette women's basketball and volleyball.
• Bellevue Park and Hagermeister Park (Green Bay). Beginning in 1919, the fledgling Packers began playing their games at Hagermeister Park, a plot of land owned by the Hagermeister Realty Co. and now home to Green Bay East High School. In the four years that the Packers played at Hagemeister, it was in three different settings. When construction of the school began, the team played two seasons at Bellevue Park, across the East River from Hagemeister Park, just east of the Hagemeister Brewery, before moving back to the previous site and its newly built City Stadium.
• Blackwolf Run (1111 W. Riverside Drive, Kohler). Established in 1988, it's one of several elite golf courses in the state, and it has twice hosted the U.S. Women's Open.
• Erin Hills Golf Course (7168 County Road O, Erin/Hartford). Opened in 2006, it hosted the 2017 U.S. Open major men's golf tournament.
• Fox Cities Stadium (2400 N. Casaloma Drive, Appleton). It's been home to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Class A) baseball since it opened in 1995; the franchise has been affiliated with the Brewers since 2009.
• LaBahn Arena (105 E. Campus Mall, Madison). The home of Wisconsin's highly successful women's ice hockey team was opened in 2012. The Badgers won national titles in 2019, 2021 and 2023.
• Pettit National Ice Center (500 South 84th St., Milwaukee). The ice skating facility often serves as home to national events, including the U.S. Olympic speedskating trials.
• Resch Center (820 Armed Forces Drive, Ashwaubenon). Across the street from Lambeau Field, it serves as home to the Wisconsin-Green Bay men's basketball team.
• Road America (N7390 Highway 67, Elkhart Lake). The road course has hosted major auto races since the 1950s and has featured high-level races from a number of circuits, including IndyCar and NASCAR.
• Whistling Straits (N8501 Lakeshore Road, Sheboygan). Major events hosted there have included three PGA Championships, the U.S. Senior Open and the 2021 Ryder Cup.

Sheboygan Falls girls basketball's Addison Schliewe shines with EWC supremacy on the line

VALDERS — With both defenses playing stout, it was tough for either the Valders Vikings or Sheboygan Falls Falcons girls basketball teams to get much going offensively on Tuesday night.

Each team entered the contest undefeated in Eastern Wisconsin Conference action, meaning the winner would take over sole possession of first place.

Luckily for Sheboygan Falls, Addison Schliewe stood head and shoulders above the rest of the players, literally and figuratively, in a 42-30 victory.

The 6 foot, 3 inch junior forward scored a game-high 23 points while no other player in the contest scored more than eight points.

Whenever she got the ball in the post, three and sometimes four Vikings defenders converged on the Falcons star, almost like orbiting planets caught in her gravitational pull.

“Two or three defenders go to her every single time and it opens up opportunities for her teammates,” Sheboygan Falls coach Paul Houwers said. “She has been unselfish and willing to pass, helping her teammates however she can to help us win.”

Schliewe averages roughly 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists per game so she is very well rounded and her performance with the EWC lead on the line wasn’t shocking to her coach.

“Addi did what Addi does tonight,” Houwers said. “She is a dynamic player. She is a special player. She gives us a chance to compete every single night.”

Valders coach Eric Otto and sophomore guard Audrey Wagner spoke about the challenges Schliewe presents.

“She’s a tough matchup, 6-3 who is athletic, dribble the ball and move,” Otto said of Schliewe. “It’s hard to defend her but we gave it our all.”

Added Wagner:

“She’s a handful and we have to prepare for the next time,” Wagner said. “We just got to fight hard. We played with as much intensity and fire as we could but they got the best of us tonight.”

With as much attention as Schliewe draws, she trusts her teammates to almost be air traffic control when she gets swarmed.

“There’s always girls talking and communicating with me so I always have an open pass,” Schliewe said. “They let me know if I’m able to make a move or not, or if I should pass it out.”

And sometimes she just uses her height and athletic ability to score over them regardless.

“It’s definitely really convenient,” Schliewe said with a big smile.

The junior says she's receiving interest from six NCAA Division I programs, including one from the Big Ten, but did not wish to specify which programs.

Houwers says the strategy coming in was to not let Valders get any open looks beyond the arc.

“We wanted to pressure them a little bit, make them feel uncomfortable,” Houwers said. “That was a big emphasis, having them uncomfortable around the perimeter and not make it easy for them to make passes.”

And even when they did manage to get penetration, Schliewe was waiting.

“It’s a definite comfort when you get beat on perimeter but then come in to 6-3 inside, hands in their face and its uncomfortable,” Houwers said.

The junior standout enjoys the impact she makes.

“It’s hard to play against our zone and when we take away the outside shots it’s definitely hard to shoot over someone as tall as me,” Schliewe said.

Valders had won 13 of their last 14 games following an 0-2 start and Houwers says the win over the Vikings will boost the Falcons the rest of the way.

“They’re one of the best teams we’ve played this season so it was definitely a confidence boost to come in here and play well,” Houwers said. “It also lets us control our own destiny in terms of the conference race.”

Otto says the rematch on Feb. 15 is eagerly anticipated.

“Unfortunately we didn’t keep it as close as we’d like to but we get another shot at them at the end of the season,” Otto said.

Farm Wisconsin marks six years with special events July 25-27, and more Manitowoc news in brief

MANITOWOC - Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center , 7001 Gass Lake Road, Manitowoc, will celebrate its sixth anniversary July 25-27.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, attendees can participate in various activities, visit with animals and meet special guests.

In honor of the anniversary, kids ages 18 and younger will get in free for the whole weekend.

All three days, Farm Wisconsin’s partner, Cedar Crest, will offer samples of Blue Moon ice cream for guests to try. Throughout the event, kids can take a barrel train ride pulled by a tractor around the parking lot. Additionally, goat friends Willow, Clara and Oreo will be on site for petting and photo opportunities.

The Olympics are coming to Farm Wisconsin with a farmer twist during the anniversary celebration. Participants can partake in various Farm Olympic challenges, including an egg-on-a-spoon race, a feed-weighing race, a cherry pit spit contest, wheelbarrow races and a three-legged race. The challenges will take place throughout the day, each day of the event.

In addition, the Wisconsin Café will launch its new menu for the first time over the weekend. From 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., guests can try some of the new dishes such as the Berry Crepes, Rooster Bowl, and the Mac and Cheese Bowl.

Special one-day activities are as follow:

• July 25: American Drone will be attending the celebration with their newest drone models. Watch a spraying demonstration and learn how this technology is benefiting the farming industry. Visit with a mink farmer and feel a mink pelt from Zimbal Mink.
• July 26: Experiment with Wisconsin Beef Council’s spice rub bar. Guests will get the chance to create their own grill seasoning and take it home to enjoy. Next, watch a floral arrangement demonstration led by members from Mishicot FFA.
• July 27: For all of the horse lovers, a special horse guest will be on site to befriend and pet. Meet the 77th Alice in Dairyland, Halei Heinzel, and try her sweet ice cream activity. In addition, Elizabeth Benicke, Sheboygan County Fairest of the Fair, will be visiting from 9 a.m. to noon. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., guests can purchase and get a signed copy of local author Lori Helke’s book, “Wisconsin Harbor Towns.”

All sixth-anniversary activities are included in the price of regular admission to Farm Wisconsin. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the front desk on the day of the event.

Camp Rokilio seeks alumni for 100th anniversary celebration

Camp Rokilio , one of the oldest Scout camps in Wisconsin, will celebrate its 100th anniversary this summer.

To properly commemorate this milestone, the camp’s alumni association is inviting all staffers who have worked at the summer camp since its inception.

The camp, located near Kiel, will host a reception for former staffers Aug. 17. The celebration will include a social hour, a dinner and a campfire that will showcase the camp’s greatest-ever skits.

The Rokilio Alumni Association is also searching for missing staff pictures, as well as rosters of former members.

The reunion will kick off at 3 p.m. Aug. 17 at the camp, 14404 Rokilio Road, Kiel. A $25 fee includes dinner and a commemorative patch.

Kiel Municipal Band presents ‘Music in the Park’ July 24

Kiel Municipal Band , under the direction of Jon Meyer, will present the third of its summer concerts at City Park at 7 p.m. July 24. The theme of the concert is “Music in the Park,” which also happens to be the title of the opening march.

The concert is free, family-friendly, and open to everyone. Food will be available prior to and during the concert provided by the OZ Swim Club. The location in case of rain is the Kiel High School Performing Arts Center.

Miss Harbor Cities competition set for September at Capitol Civic Centre

The Miss Harbor Cities Scholarship Organization has announced 2025 competition details for Miss Harbor Cities and Miss Harbor Cities’ Teen, local preliminary to Miss Wisconsin and Miss America.

The competition will be at 5 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Capitol Civic Centre, 913 S. Eighth St., Manitowoc.

In addition to the competition, Miss Harbor Cities from 2022-2024 will be featured guests including Miss Wisconsin 2022 Kylene Spanbauer and television journalist Gabriella Premus, along with Miss Harbor Cities’ Teen 2024 Katherine Vadney, who recently placed first runner-up to Miss Wisconsin’s Teen 2024.

Lakeshore Technical College Board of Trustees swears in members, elects officers

Lakeshore Technical College Board of Trustees incumbent members Curt Brauer, Belinda Esquinas and Dr. Mike Trimberger have been reappointed to the board.

Esquinas and Trimberger were sworn in at the board’s annual organizational meeting July 8.

Not present at the meeting was Brauer, who will be sworn in during the board’s August meeting.

Officers elected for the next term include John Wyatt, chairperson; Kim Rooney, vice chairperson; and Monica Nichter, secretary/treasurer.

LTC has an appointed board consisting of nine members: two employer members, two employee members, three additional members, one elected official member who holds a state or local office, and one school district administrator. Three members are appointed to the LTC Board of Trustees each year by a committee composed of the county board chairmen of the counties making up the LTC district: Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Calumet and Ozaukee. Terms for the three board members sworn in July 8 expire June 30, 2027.

1. The Lighthouse

The Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse stands tall at the end of North Pier. People don’t come from miles to see it, but it’s still one of my favorite things to do/see in Sheboygan on a warm and sunny day. Take a walk out to it on a beautiful day, take in Lake Michigan, view the Sheboygan skyline, enjoy the fresh air. Maybe you'll even stay around to watch the sunrise or sunset.

2. Street Art

Art has always played a huge role in Sheboygan’s culture. Many of the art pieces reflect S heb oygan's people and culture while others capture the lakefront and downtown area. You can find a full list of art pieces and their locations in my Street Art post.

3. Riverfront & South Pier

I can't get enough of the Riverfront and South Pier! It is home to adorable coffee shops, rental docks, restaurants, boutiques, mini-golf, and ice cream parlors. And all of these leave you with plenty of opportunities to snag Instagram-worthy photos with a beautiful blue backdrop.

4. Kohler-Andrae State Park

Get into vacation mode when you are on the scenic shores of Lake Michigan.  Kohler-Andrae is fun to walk around! I love walking the rolling dunes and the expansive beach. But, the fun doesn't stop on the beach. There is wildlife all around you in this park. I often hike the wooded trails, take the boardwalk through the marsh or the small white pine forest. Everything is absolutely stunning!

5. The Lakefront

In the summer, Sheboygan's beaches are beautiful and give off the illusion of being at the ocean. Walk through the Lottie Cooper shipwreck at Deland Park or dip your toes in the water. One of my new favorite activities to do with my friends is having a lakeside bonfire , listening to the waves, and roasting a few s'mores. While the water may not always be warm, the beach is the place to be, and Sheboygan has lots of it! 

6. Parnell Tower

If you aren't into hardcore hiking, this place is a must! The tower isn't far from the parking lot and it is an easy (but a little steep) hike from the car to the base of the tower. Once you are there, you'll be thrilled you decided to go! The views from the top are amazing! Parnell offers a panoramic view of the surrounding forest up to 25 miles! Most people simply hike up the tower but, if you are up for the challenge, I encourage you to hike the surrounding trails on a nice day!

7. Maywood Environmental Park

You can have fun at this well-maintained park all year round! It is located along the Pigeon River and connects to Evergreen Park. Explore their Ecology Center or head to the trails for hiking, biking, or potentially seeing some wildlife. Maywood has many different habitats, from grassland prairie to forests to the ponds, and it all adds up to an excellent experience.

8. John Michael Kohler Art Center

At the  John Michael Kohler Arts Center,  everything is art! Each year, thousands of visitors walk through the museum to experience world-class exhibitions and performances. But one aspect that has everyone talking are their stunning washrooms! Go peak at the potties ! Each one is uniquely designed, so don’t be surprised if you see me weaving in and out of them all!

9. Downtown

Sheboygan’s downtown area is home to historical buildings and beautifying projects: street art, fountains, and an outdoor living room. Even the shops and restaurants are quirky and eccentric and could become the subject of a post. Sheboygan's historic 8th Street is also home to all of Sheboygan's holiday parades, and it connects the city to the South Pier area.

10. Events and Festivals

Sheboygan has a number of events and festivals for you to attend throughout the year! Take your pick: farmer's markets, Independence Day, JMKAC Midsummer Festival of the Arts, light shows, food, and music festivals. Any one of them could be a fun post.
