Those who loved the woods golf at Charlotte's Hornets Nest – which hosted the DGPT Championship from 2019-2021 – found plenty to like at Nevin the last two years. Like Hornets Nest, Nevin has produced tight, drama-filled competition.

How Did Players Qualify for the 2023 DGPT Championship?

Players qualified for the 2023 DGPT Championship in two ways:

  • Winning an eligible  PDGA Major or DGPT Elite , Elite+ , or Playoff Event
  • Spots not filled by winners of those events went to the players with the most 2023 DGPT points

In MPO, 32 players qualified for the 2023 DGPT Championship. In FPO, the total is 20. If a player within either division's cut line declined to compete, the next player in line by points then qualified.

Players earned DGPT points in 2023 based on their finishes at DGPT events, three PDGA Majors , and six selected PDGA Euro Tour events throughout the season. To fully understand the points system, give our post "How Disc Golf Pro Tour Points Work & Why They Matter" a read.

It didn't happen, but it was technically possible that up to 18 spots in a division's field could have been taken by event winners who were not among their division's top point earners.

How Did the 2023 DGPT Championship Work?

What makes the DGPT Championship most interesting is its unusual structure, which has always included player elimination and scores being reset to zero after each phase of the tournament. Those elements still existed in 2023, but for the first time in the competition's history, cumulative scores over two  rounds were used to decide who moved on from a phase of the competition and who won.

In 2023, the DGPT Championship happened in four rounds separated into two, two-round phases: the Semifinals and Finals. Unlike in previous years, no players received automatic byes to a later stage. The winner played all four rounds of the competition.

How the 2023 DGPT Championship Semifinals Worked

The Semifinals were two rounds, and every player in both divisions (seeds 1-32 in MPO and seeds 1-20 in FPO) played both rounds. In lieu of byes, the DGPT gave higher seeded players "starting strokes" that they could subtract from their cumulative throw totals following the Semifinals' two rounds. Since seeds were given out based on tour points standings (more points equaled a better seed), these strokes were meant to give an advantage to those who performed best at tournaments awarding 2023 DGPT points. Tap or click to see how many starting strokes each seed at the 2023 DGPT Championship got in MPO or FPO.

The 12 MPO and 8 FPO players with the best cumulative scores from those two rounds moved on to their divisions' Finals.

How the 2023 DGPT Championship Finals Worked

The Finals were also two rounds, but this time there were no "starting strokes" and better seeds had no advantage. Players' scores were reset to zero, and whichever player turned in the lowest cumulative score from the two rounds of the Finals was their division's champion.

Seeding at the 2023 DGPT Championship

Seeding at the DGPT Championship was based entirely on tour point standings and didn't matter in the Finals.

The qualifying competitor with the most points from the 2023 season was the #1 seed, the qualifying competitor with the second most tour points was the #2 seed, and so on. In 2023, there were no byes, but higher seeds were given more starting strokes that gave them an advantage over lower-seeded players in the Semifinals.

All DGPT Championship Winners

Here are all DGPT Championship winners , their prizes, what seeds they were, and where they won:

These are some interesting takeaways from this chart served up with some tasty extras:

  • Why are prizes so much higher lately? What immediately jumps out about these stats is the huge difference in prizes in recent years. In fact, every year starting in 2020 the DGPT Championship set records for the largest overall purse in disc golf history at the time it was held. These purses became possible because the DGPT has gained many more partners in recent years .
  • Dickerson's wins were amazing but not as unexpected as Queen's When Nathan Queen won the DGPT Championship in 2021, it was practically miraculous. Our predictions gave him less than a 1% chance of winning, and in a fan competition based on picking brackets, Queen was the only player in the entire field not be chosen by at least one person as the winner. When he came out on top, it was an underdog story for the ages. In contrast, Dickerson's wins as a low seed actually weren't particularly surprising. Dickerson didn't tour nationally much during those seasons and so hadn't accumulated many points. Honing his skills by playing (and dominating) huge numbers of southeastern U.S. tournaments, Dickerson was one of the best in the world, and his Tour Championship wins weren't out of the blue.

Understanding the DGPT

The basics of the disc golf pro tour, what is the dgpt.

The Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) is a professional disc golf league that showcases the sport’s top talent in a series of elite events. Founded in 2010, the DGPT has grown to become the premier disc golf tour, featuring a diverse array of competitions that attract thousands of spectators and generate significant media coverage.

DGPT Events

The DGPT features a series of high-profile events throughout the disc golf season. These events include:

  • The Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship: The tour’s culminating event, featuring the top 48 players in the world competing for a $100,000 prize purse.

  • Disc Golf Pro Tour Challenge: A series of mini-tour events that take place throughout the season, featuring a mix of professional and amateur players.

DGPT Points System

The DGPT employs a comprehensive points system to determine player rankings and seedings for events. Players earn points based on their finish in each event, with the winner receiving 100 points, second place receiving 99 points, and so on. At the end of the season, the player with the most points is crowned the DGPT Tour Champion.

The Importance of the Playoffs

The Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) playoffs are the culmination of a year-long season, where the top players in the sport compete for the coveted championship title. The playoffs are crucial for several reasons, including determining the season champion, crowning the tour champions, and awarding the lucrative DGPT Player of the Year title.

Qualifying for the Playoffs

To qualify for the DGPT playoffs, players must participate in a minimum of four DGPT events throughout the season. The top 60 players on the DGPT rankings at the end of the regular season are eligible to compete in the playoffs. Additionally, players can earn additional playoff points by finishing in the top 10 at DGPT events throughout the season.

Why the Playoffs Matter

The DGPT playoffs are significant for several reasons:

  • Determining the Season Champion The DGPT playoffs determine the overall season champion, who is crowned after the final event. The winner of the playoffs is considered the best player of the year and receives a significant monetary prize.
  • Crowning the Tour Champions The DGPT playoffs also crown the tour champions in each of the five tour divisions: FPO, MPO, MPM, FM, and Junior Boys. The winners of these divisions receive significant prizes and recognition for their achievements throughout the season.
  • Awarding the DGPT Player of the Year Title The DGPT Player of the Year title is awarded to the player who accumulates the most points throughout the season, including playoff events. This title is considered the most prestigious award in disc golf and carries significant prestige and recognition.

In summary, the DGPT playoffs are critical for determining the best players of the year, crowning tour champions, and awarding the prestigious DGPT Player of the Year title. The playoffs bring together the top players in the sport, making them a must-watch event for disc golf fans around the world.

The Structure of the Playoffs

Format of the playoffs, the number of events.

The DGPT Playoffs consist of a series of events that take place throughout the disc golf season. These events are designed to determine the best disc golf players in the world, and they culminate in the championship event. Typically, the playoffs include between eight and 16 events, with the top players in the standings qualifying for the final event.

The Points System

The DGPT Playoffs use a points system to determine the standings and the qualification for the final event. Points are awarded to players based on their performance in each event, with the winner receiving the most points and the last-place finisher receiving the fewest points. The points system is designed to reward consistent performance throughout the season, with players earning points at each event they compete in.

Tiebreakers

In the event of a tie in the standings, the DGPT Playoffs use a series of tiebreakers to determine the final qualifiers for the championship event. These tiebreakers include the number of wins, the number of second-place finishes, the number of third-place finishes, and the number of holes won in the event. If a tie still cannot be broken, a sudden-death playoff is held to determine the final qualifiers.

Overall, the format of the DGPT Playoffs is designed to determine the best disc golf players in the world through a series of competitive events. The number of events, points system, and tiebreakers all work together to ensure that the most deserving players qualify for the championship event and have a chance to be crowned the world’s best disc golfer.

About disc golf world rankings.

Disc Golf World Rankings powered by UDisc are compiled based on players' performances at PDGA Majors, Disc Golf Pro Tour Elite Series and Silver Series events, PDGA National Tour and Euro Tour tournaments, the European Disc Golf Championship, the Throw Pink Women's Disc Golf Championship, and the Prodigy Disc Pro Tour. Each player maintains a score – the natural logarithm of their Dominance Index – and their score increases if they outperform expectations in an event (and vice versa). Defeating highly ranked players results in a larger scoring change than defeating lower ranked players. Rankings are updated after the completion of an event on the above-mentioned tours. For Immediate Release:

September 30th, 2022: The Disc Golf Pro Tour is pleased to release its 2023 schedule in unison with next year’s PDGA Pro Major schedule. All events will earn points towards the 2023 Tour Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Schedule Breakdown By Designation

“As our staff, players, and fans gear up for the 2022 Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship, we’re excited to share a first look at our 2023 Tour schedule,” said DGPT CEO & Tour Director Jeff Spring. “The 2023 season will be another big step forward for the Tour, building on the rock-solid foundation that we’ve grown with this incredible group of touring professionals and our fantastic event teams and partners. Next season’s schedule is designed with the goals of sustainability and professionalism for players and the creation of compelling storylines and action for fans both onsite and online. We aim to continue to usher in a new age of pro disc golf for the players and fans that have made this growth possible. As always, the collaboration with the PDGA is crucial in finalizing a schedule that works well to serve all stakeholders. We thank them for their help in this complicated process, especially in regards to their flexibility on a date adjustment for amateur and junior worlds!”

The most significant portion of the 2023 schedule is dedicated to thirteen Elite Events. In addition to eleven returning events, the Pro Tour heads to Austin, TX, to add The Open at Austin (formerly the Silver Series event, The Open at Belton) and promotes the Music City Open to Elite Status.

Two of the thirteen returning Elite events from the 2022 schedule will carry a new designation of Elite+ . While not a new PDGA-sanctioning tier, Elite + events will feature bigger purses, additional media focus, and elevated spectator experiences. Similar to the playoffs, Elite+ events will be four-round tournaments, with a cut after round three, and will deliver more DGPT Points. The first-ever Elite+ events are the Portland Open and the Ledgestone Open. “We look to continue to grow our slate of Elite+ events in the future,” said Spring. “We’re excited to use these events as an opportunity put more external eyes on our players, the Tour, and most importantly, the sport as a whole.”

What Discs Do The Pros Use? – Answered

Whether you’re new to disc golf or have been playing for a few years you may be thinking of investing in a serious set of discs. With all the possible options, its easy to get overwhelmed. One place to start is by looking at what discs professional players use. Here is a list of the discs used by the world’s top 10 pro disc golf players ranked in the  PDGA (2020). This list covers the top five male players and the top five female players .

Top 5 Male Players

Paul mcbeth, ricky wysocki, eagle mcmahon, james conrad, chris dickerson, top 5 female players, paige pierce, catrina allen, henna blomroos, kristin tattar.

  • Sarah Hokum

The list focuses on the brand and model of discs broken down by their use. It’s worth noting that most of these players have a few different versions of the same disc using different types of plastics, different graphics and varying degrees of how broken in they are. Their preferences change depending on the situation such as dealing with wind or getting around an obstacle.

Professional players exclusively use the discs made by their sponsors so their bags may change significantly when they switch sponsorships. You’ll see a bit more variety with players sponsored by Dynamic Discs because of their partnerships with Westside Discs and Latitude 64. Many of these players also have signature lines with their sponsors.

One thing we noticed while compiling this list is that some choices are more sentimental than practical. They may choose a disc with a graphic from a tournament that they are really fond of or one that is from a friend’s signature line. Sometimes they keep discs because they’ve had it for a long time and decided to always keep it in their bag.

Players are constantly tweaking the discs in their bags. These lists were created with the most current information we could find.

Paul McBeth began his professional disc golf career in 2008. He is a five-time PDGA world disc golf champion winning the title for four consecutive years from 2012 to 2015 and then reclaiming the title in 2019. Paul was sponsored by Innova Discs from 2005 to 2018 when he won his first four world championships. Near the end of 2018, his sponsor changed to Discraft and he won his fifth world championship while sponsored by them.

Wrapping Up

The lists highlight a wide variety of options. There is no one brand dominating the bags of the top ten pros. Innova discs stands out because they sponsor three out of the ten. Some choices pop-up in a few different places like Innova Discs’ Aviar, but the players may have different variations of the disc or use them for different scenarios.

While it may be tempting to go out and buy the same discs as the world’s top players, there are a few things to keep in mind. These players have carefully chosen their discs based on their style of playing. It will be helpful to understand your own style and then look for what pros play in a similar way. Little variations can make a huge difference in what discs are right for you such as whether you favor backhand or forehand throws.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the pros have put in years of trial and error. They have tried countless discs to find what works for them. Before putting a lot of money into a bag, try different discs to find what you like. This is especially important if you are still developing your playing style.Lastly, its important to remember that the pros have advanced skills and they are able to handle more unwieldy discs. Some of the discs that they use may be very difficult for a less experienced player to handle. You may want to explore discs that are better suited to your level of playing and gradually move up to more challenging ones

How a disc, a quarter and some two-sided tape can help you compress iron shots

You don't need to be a pro to compress your irons like one!

YouTube/Titleist

Welcome to Shaving Strokes , a GOLF.com series in which we’re sharing improvements, learnings and takeaways from amateur golfers just like you — including some of the speed bumps and challenges they faced along the way.

In my humble opinion, there’s almost nothing sweeter than compressing an iron shot. It feels perfect. It feels right. And that’s because it is.

Compressing the golf ball means you’re making ball-first contact rather than hitting the ground before impact — which is the reason why so many amateurs chunk their shots . By making ball-first contact, the ball will, for a split-second, feel like it’s grabbing the grooves of the clubface to create a more predictable spin and ball flight.

Having the ability to consistently compress your iron shots is an elevated skill that requires knowledge of attack angle and clubface control . Unfortunately, the regular ol’ Average Joe doesn’t necessarily understand either.

A key to flushing shots is being able to compress the golf ball, so top teacher Brech Spradley says this divot drill can help get that feel

This simple divot drill will help you compress the golf ball. Here’s how

But even if you’re not a scratch golfer or a pro, you can still learn how to compress your irons — and it’s actually not as difficult as it may first appear.

In the video below (courtesy of Titleist’s YouTube ), GOLF Top 100 Teacher Jason Baile explains an easy drill that’ll help you learn the feel and motion to compress your irons. All you need is a disc, a quarter, and some two-sided tape to give it a try, too, so there’s no excuse not to get to work and start to see better shots almost instantly.

How to compress your irons like a pro

As Baile begins the video, he holds up a plastic slider, sort of a miniature frisbee, and explains why it can do wonders to help you compress your iron shots.

He then says to visualize the slider as a “big quarter,” with one side marked as heads and the other side as tails.

“We’re going to pretend that the non-marked side is the tails of a really big quarter, and then the marked side is the heads of a really big quarter,” Baile says. “When we put our hands on there, the trail hand’s going to be a little bit lower than the lead hand. As we come down here, we’re going to try and take the lead head side of the quarter down and over the tails side of the quarter.”

As you address the ball, an easy hack to confirm that your clubface is square is by using this golf grip hack - here's how it works

This simple grip hack will confirm if your clubface is square at address

By doing this simple move with the hands, Baile says you’ll deloft the golf club and begin to experience the feeling of compressing your irons.

“By delofting that golf club, it’ll send the face down and slightly to the right of the target line, really turning the loft there,” he adds. “So heads side versus tails side, turn the right wrist over and really stay on top of the golf ball with the palm.”

After practicing that feel to understand your hand and wrist motion, Baile takes out some two-sided tape with a quarter, explaining how to use each in order to compress your irons.

“I’ve got a piece of two-sided tape with a quarter, and I’m going to put the tails side down on the ‘magic spot’ [on my glove] where we connect our grip,” he says. “I’m going to take my grip — with the right hand on top of the heads side of the quarter [for a right-handed golfer] — really feel that up against it.”

The image below shows how the hand position should look on top of the quarter.

“As I come down through impact, I’m going to trap this golf ball against the ground to hit a little trap draw.”

Baile’s able to hit the ideal draw, keeping the flight of his ball low with a right-to-left curvature.

“There’s just a slight bit of divot,” he adds. “We took that heads side of the quarter, we turned it down and over the tails side, and we hit our trap draw.”

So whether you struggle with ball flight, clubface control, or general contact, by practicing these drills from Baile, you’ll begin to strike it better and start compressing your irons like a pro.

WHAT IS THE DGPT Q-SERIES?

The Disc Golf Pro Tour Qualifying Series (Q-Series) is a new stand-alone series introduced in 2024, aimed at providing up and coming FPO and MPO competitors with an additional pathway to earn a 2025 tour card. The series includes multiple PDGA A-tier events across the United States, culminating in a finale in the Southeastern U.S. in November.

Structure: Q-Series spans multiple events, leading to a final competition – the Q-Series Finale. The series is designed to award full DGPT tour cards to top performers based on their series performance, with six cards for the Men’s Pro Open (MPO) division and four for the Women’s Pro Open (FPO) division. Additionally, partial tour cards (silver cards) will be made available to regular-season Q-Series champions.

Q-Series Championship: Competitors accumulate points at Q-Series events throughout the season, with the top three finishes counting towards their points total. The finale is open only to those who qualify through the Q-Series points standings or the DGPT World Standings (read more about qualification on the Q-Series Championship tab).

Purpose: As the DGPT continues to grow and competition for Tour Cards becomes more intensive, the Q-Series will serve as the Tour’s  minor league  in the sense that local and regional pros, as well as up-and-coming players competing on Tour, will be able to earn their spot (tour card) on Tour for the following season. The Q-Series is about celebrating competition and giving competitors a chance to earn their tour card instead of seeking an exemption or qualifying for individual DGPT events in the future.

This series is not only for aspiring professional players seeking to join the tour but also for fans interested in the evolving dynamics and emerging talents in the sport. The Q-Series aims to heighten competition, spotlight new talents, and provide clear, merit-based access to the DGPT.

2024 Q-SERIES SCHEDULE

Below you can find the 2024 DGPT Q-Series schedule. For questions on registration, please contact the Tournament Director.

POINTS SERIES STRUCTURE

Similar to the DGPT World Standings, the Q-Series will maintain a season-long points standings which will qualify players for the Q-Series finale. Events on the Q-Series will award points to competitors based on event performance using the same points distribution methods as standard DGPT events (100 pts for a win, etc.).

These Q-Series points and the associated points standings are distinct and separate from the DGPT World Standings. The points earned at Q-Series events only count towards qualifying a player for the Q-Series finale, not the DGPT Championship. Competitors will be allowed to compete at as many Q-Series events as they wish to register for, but the Tour will only count their top three event finishes towards their points standings total.

Q-SERIES FINALE FORMAT

The 2024 Q-Series finale will be a standard three-round stroke play event with no advantages given to competitors based on points standings position.

QUALIFYING FOR THE Q-SERIES FINALE

The Q-Series finale will be a qualification-only event, meaning that a player must earn their way into the competition. The DGPT will award qualifying spots based on both the season-long Q-Series points standings and the DGPT World Standings.

In addition to awarding Q-Series finale spots to competitors at the top of the Q-Series points standings, we’re also pleased to offer spots to competitors just outside the cut line for earning full 2025 season tour cards via the DGPT World Standings. Our goal with the Q-Series is to provide an additional pathway to tour card qualification for up-and-coming players. By inviting competitors who fell just shy of earning a tour card via the World Standings, we aim to increase the level of competition at the finale and provide one additional opportunity for up-and-coming players on tour to earn a card instead of applying for an exemption. – Jeff Spring, DGPT CEO and Tour Director.

*The Q-Series finale is only open to qualified players who have NOT already earned a 2025 tour card after the 2024 DGPT Championship. If a competitor participates in Q-Series events but then earns their 2025 Tour Card via other methods, they will become ineligible to earn more Q-Series points and ineligible to compete at the Q-Series finale.

**The top 45 FPO and top 90 MPO competitors in the 2024 DGPT World Standings will automatically earn 2025 tour cards and are thus ineligible to compete in the Q-Series finale.

AWARDING TOUR CARDS AND SILVER CARDS

The Q-Series will award full tour cards to competitors based on both the Q-Series points standings and the results of the Q-Series finale. Additional partial tour cards (silver cards) will be awarded to individual Q-series event winners as well as to competitors that place high, but not at the top, of the Q-Series finale. For full details, please refer to the table below.

Unlike the DGPT Championship, the Q-Series finale will award points towards the Q-Series points standings. This means that the competitors who qualify for the finale will have an additional points-earning opportunity.

ACCESS TO DGPT EVENTS FOR Q-SERIES WINNERS

The champions of each regular season Q-Series event (in both FPO and MPO) will be awarded an exemption spot at a future regular season DGPT event. These exemption invitations cannot be applied to any of the DGPT Playoff events or the DGPT Championship.

Qualified competitors should list three events of their choice and submit them to [email protected] . The DGPT will assist in entry based on registration availability. Entry into events less than 30 days from the start of the competition is not guaranteed. Competitors must pay the registration fee as well as any other fees associated with ratings-based entry.

Should a qualified competitor not be able to find a suitable event in the same season they qualify for the exemption spot, the Tour will allow the competitor to enter into one event of their choosing during the following season.

DISPLACEMENT RULES: AWARDS & POINTS

The DGPT has created a set of displacement rules to ensure fair distribution of tour cards and silver cards among competitors. These rules apply in scenarios where competitors qualify for multiple awards. Below is a simplified explanation:

2025 Tour Card Holders & Q-Series Participation: Competitors who have already secured a 2025 tour card can participate in Q-Series events but won’t be eligible to earn additional Q-Series points, silver cards, or event exemptions. If such competitors place well in a Q-Series event, any benefits (points, silver cards, exemptions) will be awarded to the next eligible player.

Double Qualification Scenarios

Points Standings + Finale Finish : If a competitor earns a tour card based on both their Q-Series finale performance and points standings, the tour card from the finale takes precedence. Subsequently, the tour cards and silver cards for points standings finishers will be reassigned to the next eligible players.

Points Standings + Individual Tour Event Results : Should a competitor qualify for a tour card through both the points standings and their performance at a Tour Event (DGPT Elite Series or PDGA Pro Major), the tour card from the Tour Event is prioritized. Tour cards and silver cards for points standings will then be reassigned to the next eligible players.

Winning a Q-Series Event + Points Standings : If a player wins a silver card in a regular season Q-series event and also earns a tour card through points standings, they will receive the tour card. No additional silver card will be awarded retroactively to the runner-up of the original Q-Series event.

Winning a Q-Series Event + Finale Finish : In cases where a competitor wins a regular season event (earning a silver card) and then secures a tour card at the Q-Series finale, they will retain the tour card. No additional silver card will be awarded retroactively to the runner-up of the original Q-Series event.

Earning Two Silver Cards : If a competitor earns two silver cards in different scenarios (winning a regular season event and placing high in the finale or points series), the silver card from the regular season win is retained. The other silver card will be reassigned to the next eligible competitor.

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY

To participate in a DGPT Q-Series tournament, all competitors must meet the PDGA player requirements for the sanctioning level of the Q-Series event in question and follow any other requirements as set forth by the Tournament Director. Competitors who have already qualified for a 2025 Tour Card may participate in Q-Series events but will be skipped over for the purposes of awarding any associated Q-Series benefits (silver cards, tour cards, exemptions, and points).
