Jaldapara & Gorumara Wildlife Tour

Not many know that there is a lot more to West Bengal than the rich culture, lip-smacking food and magnificent temples. This eastern state of India is blessed with plenty of exotic wildlife. Our wildlife tour to Jaldapara and Gorumara national parks comprises of 5 nights and 6 days itinerary that offers you a great chance to see several animals and birdlife species. These include the one horned rhinos, elephants, gaur, spotted deers, Pallas's fishing eagle, jungle fowl, peafowl and partridges. The tour's specially designed itinerary lets you watch the best of West Bengal wildlife from close quarters.

Upon arrival at NJP (New Jalpaiguri) railway station / Bagdogra airport meet with our representative and drive to Gorumara National Park. Established in 1992 as a national park Gorumara is situated in Jalpaiguri district of west Bengal. Upon arrival check into the wildlife resort. Evening free at leisure. Overnight stay at resort.

Today we will explore the Gorumara National park by a 02 hrs Jeep safari. We will awake a little early and after morning tea it is time to enter the national park first time. Gorumara National Park is mainly famous for the one horned Rhino, apart from Rhino a number of spotted Deers, Bison's, Elephants and Gaurs can be spotted during your wildlife jeep safari.

Later return to the resort for breakfast. After lunch we will again enter to the national park for wildlife viewing, this time we will spent our quite time at Jatraprasad Watch Tower. The watch towers are very popular in Gorumara and offer an excellent view of the forest, these watch tower are very significance for viewing wildlife from very close proximity. To spend some time at the watch tower is a very good idea. The popular watch tower of the national park is Jatraprasad watch tower; which is a tribute to the pet Elephant of forest department (Kunki).

Later return to the resort for overnight stay.

Today we will enjoy our safari in the forest of Gorumara to get a chance to move very close the wildlife animals. After one hrs long safari we will return to the resort for fresh-n-up and breakfast.

Enjoy the day at leisure up to the lunch time or one can go for visit to Rhino observation tower, located near the forest bungalow. The salt reservoir just below the Rhino observation point is an ideal a perfect place to see wildlife as these wildlife frequently visit the reservoir for water.

After lunch we will again visit the national park, this time we will enjoy a nature trekking to the national park.

Later return to the wildlife resort for wildlife viewing.

Gorumara - Jaldapara National Park (90 km)

After breakfast we will leave for our second wildlife destination Jaldapara National Park. On the way to Jaldapara we will visit the South Khayerbari animal rescue center. The animal rescue center at Khayerbari is home to Tigers, Leopards which was brought from various circus troupes and zoos. One can enjoy a leopard safari in this center.

Further we will continue drive to Jaldapara national Park, situated within the foothills of Himalayas. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1991, for the protection of the one-horned rhino. The park is flung by river Torsa and river Malangi. The sanctuary is mostly covered with tall grasses and comprises rich vegetation and a variety of wildlife. Upon arrival in Jaldapara check into the wildlife resort. After fresh-n-up we will explore the nearby tribal villages within the vicinity of the national park and will also enjoy a nature trail.

This morning we will awake a little early and will move for a jungle safari in Jaldapara national park for wildlife viewing. Later return to the resort for breakfast.

After breakfast enjoy the atmosphere and the glimpse of nature around the wildlife resort.

After lunch we will again visit the National Park. This time we will enjoy our jeep safari to the national park to explore its exquisite beauty of the vast grassland. The national park is famous for the one one-horned rhinoceros and holds the highest rhino population in India after Kaziranga National Park. The other fauna found in Jaldapara are tigers, elephants, deers, sambar, wild pig and bison and a number of avifauna are also found in Jaldapara which make it a paradise for bird watchers, the avifauna are the Bengal Florican, crested eagle, Pallas's fishing eagle, jungle fowl, peafowl, partridges, and lesser pied hornbill etc.

Places To Visit

Around 20 km away from jaldapara lies Chilapata, a dense, lush green forest that is home to an ancient fort. 1. As per the instruction by Forest Department of Government of West Bengal, tickets for  Jeep safari & Elephant Safari in Jaldapara National Park to be collected by guest himself from forest office as first come first     serve basis.

2. Permit for Jeep Safari in Jaldapara  National Park  is being issued by In-Charge , Nature Interpretation Center , Madarihat from 5am to 7am for Morning shift & 1pm to 3pm for Evening shift.

3. Permit for Elephant Safari in Jaldapara  National Park  is being issued by In-Charge , Nature Interpretation Center , Madarihat from 6 pm to 8 pm for next day Morning shift only.

4. Forest recommended Gypsy [maximum 06 passengers] & forest Guide is mandatory to enter inside forest for Watch Tower Visit & Jungle Safari.

5. Camera Charges to be paid directly during collection of entry permit as per category of camera.

6. Photo copy of Photo ID proof [ Voter Card/Pan Card/ Driving Licence/passport ] of any one of the guest along with original to be produce during collection of permit.

Day 01: Siliguri/Bagdogra to Madarihat (135 km./ 2.30 hrs.)

Welcome to ‘Jaldapara Tour’ . On arrival at the Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri railway station (own cost), you will be transferred to Madarihat. Enroute enjoy the natural beauty of Dooars.

Jaldapara -Elephant

Day 02: Jungle safari at national park

Early morning jungle safari at Jaldapara National Park. Back to hotel for Lunch & afternoon jungle safari at Chilapata Forest.

Day 03: Madarihat to Siliguri (124 km./ 2.30 hrs)

After breakfast drive back to Siliguri/Bagdogra. Enroute visit Khayerbari Animal Rescue Centre. ‘ Jaldapara Tour ’ ends.

Day – 02 – Safari, Elephant Ride & Visit to Totopara - Visit to Totapara - Early morning drive to Hollong for thrilling elephant safari is organized in the  early morning from Hollong - It offers the exquisite beauty of the vast grassland of Jaldapara - Tourists  06 - 07 elephants operating from Hollong every morning and  they make 2 round trips - One can sight Indian rhinos, bison, deer and Asiatic elephants – Back to resort for breakfast – Drive to Totapara -  Famous for the Dooars  aboriginals Totos - Totoapara is 22 kilometres from Jaldapara - Toto is an isolated tribal group residing only in a small enclave called Totopara - Totopara is located  at the foot of the Himalayas just to the south of the border of Bhutan on the western bank of Torsa river - Back to resort – Evening stroll at the meadow near the  resort or watch tower to spot wildlife - Night stay at Jaldapara / Hollong

Day - 02 - Safari at Chilapata & Phuentsholling - Early morning one can proceed to Chilapata - Nearly 26 kilometres from Jaldapara or Alipurduar - The forest is  used by the Elephants as a corridor to migrate - Chilapata Forest Reserve, Nal Rajar Garh, Barodabari/ Malangi and Kodal Bosti are the place of interest - Interesting  is Ram Guna Tree locally called is knownas the tree that bleed - Back to Resort - Post Lunch one can visit Phuentsholling - The frontier town in southern Bhutan nearly  Phuntsholing or Phuentsholing is the administrative seat of the Chukha district - A thriving commercial centre, it is home to a potpourri of ethnic groups  intermingling at the point where the countries Bhutan and India meet - Temple called Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang, Monastery Kharbandi Goemba, Crocodile breeding centerand  the local market is the places of interest - Back to resort / hotel / Camp - Overnight stay at resort

I recently went to Dooars Trip, right before the lockdown. Our entire trip was planned and organized by Naturewings. From car pickups to hotels, to sightseeing, Naturewings looked after our every need. Jaldapara in February is very beautiful. It has comfortable weather, and the forest looks magnificent. We stayed at the (hotel name) which was very comfortable. The Jeep safari and elephant safari have to be booked by customers, themselves. However, nature wings provided us with all directions on how to go about it, which made our trip a lot easier. From Jaldapara, we went for sightseeing to (insert place) arranged by Naturewings. It was a great trip and we will go with Naturewings again for our next Sikkim or North Bengal Tour .

Finally three friends family decided to explore forest in last winter and close to Kolkata, Dooars was the best forest destination. Based on inputs from one of our friend, who already visited Dooars suggested NatureWings as they are the best for the Dooars Tour Package . So we called NatureWings and they guided us with a very well planned 5 nights 6 Days program. Our Dooars Tour started from New Mal Jn (NMZ) Railway Station and as per the plan, our car was waiting just outside the station. We then proceed to Lataguri and in the afternoon we took the Lataguri Jungle Safari by Jeep, where we spotted Wild Bison, Wild Elephants and few peacocks. Next day, we took the whole day excursion to Jhalong, Bindu, Paren, Rocky Isalnd, Samsing and SultaniKhola. Next Day we went to Jayanti forest inside Buxa Tiger Reserve. Jayanti homestays are very nice just in front of Jayanti River. Next day morning we took the Chilapata Jeep Safari , the jeep entered into very deep jungle, where no sun light reaches and after completing Jeep Safari Completes, we proceed to the Jaladapara Forest, where NatureWings arranged a nice resort, Hallong Eco Resort. From the resort back gate, we entered into the forest for an afternoon walk. The best part of Dooars Tour was the Elephant Safari in Jaldapara and we took at 5 am slot. It was an amazing experience as Elephant entered into the Jeep jungle and we could see a most coveted Indian One Horn Rhino from stone throwing distance. A great thank you to NatureWIngs for arranging such our wonderful Dooars Trip and will certainly recommend my friends and families to NatureWings.

Jaldapara National Park is 216 sq. kms of grasslands and dense deciduous forests watered by the crisscrossing Torsa and Malangi rivers. It is home to the famous Indian one-horned rhinos , elephants, leopards, tigers and nearly 350 species of birds including the rarest Bengal Florican.

Jaldapara was established as a sanctuary in 1941 for conservation purposes and to protect the rhino from extinction. In May 2012 it was declared a National Park. Surrounded by tea gardens and farmlands on all sides, Jaldapara National Park is constantly under pressure from population and illegal grazing by livestock.

The two entry gates to Jaldapara National Park are Madarihat and Salkumar . Elephant safaris as well as Jeep safaris are available from both these gates. The safaris are held in the mornings and late afternoons to the watchtowers located near the core areas where wildlife sighting is very regular.

Landscape of Jaldapara National Park

Jaldapara National Park covers 216 sq km, and is a vast stretch of mixed deciduous forests, mountain streams, tall savannah grasslands and river banks. The biggest river here is Torsha. The Malangi River also cuts across from east to west. Other rivers are Hollong, Chirakhawa, Kalijhora, Sissamara, Bhaluka and Buri Torsa.

Flora and fauna at Jaldapara National Park

Jaldapara National Park is a storehouse of many endangered mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds. It has the second largest Indian rhino population after Kaziranga in Assam. The Royal Bengal Tiger, elephant, leopard, spotted deer, Sambhar, barking deer, bison, wild pigs and rarest hispid hare and the hog-badger also inhabit Jaldapara.

It is also a birdwatcher’s paradise and you may stand lucky to spot the rare Bengal Florican, Rumped Vulture, Pallas’s fish Eagle, Pied Harrier, Crested Eagle, Common Buzzard, Shikra, Kestrel, Sparrow Hawk, Partridge, Finn’s weaver and the hornbill. The amphibian and reptile list is also impressive at Jaldapara with the Indian King Cobra at the helm. Pythons, kraits, cobras, monitor lizards and about different species of turtles also roam free here.

Things to do at Jaldapara National Park

Elephant safari and jeep safari are the two major activities here. Tourists can enjoy these safaris from Madarihat as well as Salkumar. The service is provided on a first come – first serve basis. Four persons can ride one elephant. There are 6-7 elephants operating in both these gates and they make two round trips. If it is peak tourist time one more round trip is arranged. Also, 4×4 jeep safari is available both in the morning and in the afternoon. Bird watchers from all over the world come here to spot some of the rarest species of residential as well as migratory birds.

Things to see at Jaldapara National Park

Visits to watchtowers located beside salt licks and waterholes are the best spots to catch a glimpse of the wildlife in Jaldapara. There is also a Leopard Rehabilitation Centre and Wildlife Museum nearby. Other attractions include the tribal village of Totopara , the home to one the oldest tribes of India – the Totos.

How to reach Jaldapara National Park

Jaldapara National Park is around 140 kms from Bagdogra airport. There are 3 railheads – Madarihat Railway Station is 07 km away but only local and passenger trains halt here. Mail and express trains stop at Hasimara and Falakata railway stations, which are around 20 kms from the different entry points of Jaldapara. However, the two most popular nearby railheads are New Jalpaiguri and New Alipurdar. You can also travel by road, from Siliguri and other places in North Bengal. Bus option are from North Bengal State Transport Corporation and Bhutan Government.
