Costa Navarino

The prime sustainable destination in the Mediterranean, located in the Greek region of Messinia, southwest Peloponnese

WELCOME TO COSTA NAVARINO

The story of Costa Navarino is as old as Greece itself. It was wise King Nestor, legendary ruler of ancient Pylos, who first gave meaning to the word “hospitality” when he befriended complete strangers. This is a place where friendship can always be found, where happiness is measured by footsteps in the sand.

Premier Destination for luxury holidays in Greece

Costa Navarino is located in Messinia in the southwest Peloponnese, in one of the most unspoiled and breathtaking landscapes in the Mediterranean. Its philosophy is driven by a genuine desire to promote Messinia, while protecting and preserving not only its natural beauty but also a remarkable cultural heritage spanning 4,500 years. Costa Navarino is currently home to four 5-star premium resorts, Mandarin Oriental Costa Navarino , W Costa Navarino , The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort and The Westin Resort Costa Navarino , three spa centres, four signature 18-hole golf courses, over 40 dining venues, a wide range of sports, outdoor and cultural activities, plus an array of 5-star services. The destination is enriched by Navarino Agora, a curated marketplace and incubator of art and culture that combines shopping, dining and entertainment with cultural happenings.

A sustainably developed high-end residential destination

Navarino Residences, a collection of luxury villas for private ownership, present a unique opportunity to acquire luxury freehold real estate in Greece. Discover Mandarin Oriental's exquisite resort in the heart of the Peloponnese

Costa Navarino, nestled in the heart of Messenia in the southwest Peloponnese, is a destination that harmoniously blends natural beauty, cultural heritage and modern luxury. Known for its commitment to sustainability and preserving the region's rich history, Costa Navarino offers a unique escape where visitors can immerse themselves in pristine landscapes, explore ancient ruins and indulge in world-class amenities.

Arriving at Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino was like stepping into a serene paradise. The pristine shores of the southwest Peloponnese and the luxurious setting of the resort immediately enveloped me in a sense of tranquility and anticipation. Over my two-night stay, I discovered that every aspect of this exquisite property - from the food and ambiance to the spa and staff - surpassed my highest expectations.

Upon my arrival, the beauty of the natural surroundings captivated me. The resort’s design seamlessly blends into the landscape, with Mediterranean plants and earthy tones reflecting the region's traditional Messenian style. As I made my way to the reception, the staff greeted me warmly, ensuring that I felt at home from the very first moment.

I stayed in a Bay View Pool Villa, which felt like a private sanctuary nestled on the hillside. The villa featured an expansive outdoor terrace with a luxurious private pool and relaxed seating that offered a shady escape from the Mediterranean sun. Designed in calming natural hues and elegantly decorated with traditional rugs and local pottery, the villa seamlessly blended the landscape with intricate design. Each evening, I enjoyed watching the sun set over Navarino Bay, a mesmerising spectacle that added to the villa’s charm.

Where To Dine

The dining experiences at Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino were nothing short of extraordinary. Oliviera, the resort’s signature restaurant, quickly became my favourite, from breakfast to dinner. The chefs seamlessly intertwined authentic Greek traditions with contemporary dining, using the finest local ingredients. I was particularly enamoured with the seafood, which was incredibly fresh and flavourful.

Another highlight was Pizza Sapienza by Daniele Cason. Each bite of the freshly baked pizza transported me to Italy, thanks to the skilled craftsmanship of the chefs.

As a Lebanese person, I found the Middle Eastern cuisine at Tahir absolutely amazing. The fresh, light and healthy mezze dishes brought the rich flavours of the Levantine region to life, making it a truly memorable dining experience.

Why Greece’s Costa Navarino Is Having a Moment in the Sun

“Silk has actually had a long history in the Messenia region,” Athens-based designer Christiana Vardakou tells me as we stroll the grounds of the newly opened Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino , located in a quiet pocket of the southwest coast of the Peloponnese right next to the modest village of Pylos. We’re about a 45-minute drive west from the town of Kalamata, which is today best known for its olives, but also once played host to a thriving ancient silk-weaving practice. Now, there’s not much of it left, Vardakou explains, adding that there may just be one operation around, and it wouldn’t be easy to access its very limited silk production. Still, as a designer, Vardakou is eager to explore the textile history of Greece—and that’s why today, we’re scavenging the hotel’s gardens to pluck flowers and plants that we can use to naturally dye a silk scarf.

Vardakou drives three hours from Athens to host these creative workshops exclusively for Mandarin Oriental guests. And it’s just one of the ways the hotel aims to connect visitors to the local culture. The Peloponnese is hardly an unknown destination: Historic towns like Mycenae, Nafplio, and Olympia as well as white-sand beaches in Elafonissos, Kalamata, and Mani get their fair share of summer tourism. But the area of Costa Navarino, a luxury resort development, is a much newer pin on the upscale travel map. The first phase of construction was launched in 2010, and nearly 15 years later, there’s still an easygoing pace to a vacation here. There are no cruise ship tours marching through in the middle of the day like Santorini. And while DJ-led events do happen, Myconian-style circuit parties aren’t the norm.

Instead, you could be hiking the nearby trails, seeking out tranquil beaches, visiting olive oil farms, or, like me, walking around Mandarin Oriental’s grounds with a Greek designer snipping and picking hibiscus, achillea, lavender, and yarrow for our DIY art project. We’re going to take our bounty to Navarino Agora, a new outdoor dining, shopping, and entertainment complex sandwiched between Mandarin Oriental and W Costa Navarino . Opened last summer, this is probably the liveliest part of the development, where you could eat international cuisine (from Peruvian to Lebanese), shop for resort wear from Vilebrequin and Melissa Odabash, and watch a movie. In ancient Greek, agora means an outdoor market where people gather. Agora Navarino serves much of the same function, and today, my natural dyeing activity with Vardakou is proving to be a particularly intriguing sight for the gathering public; a few stop to ask about what we’re doing. Near the center of the agora, the hotel installed a table stacked with all the supplies (including jars of the dried flowers Vardakou drove over from Athens) we’ll need to turn a plain silk scarf into a vision from my imagination.

Natural silk dyeing is only one of the new things you can do in Costa Navarino—on top of your typical Greek vacation pursuits of eating seafood, getting a tan on pretty beaches, and exploring historic attractions, of course. Add the region’s picturesque dunes, rolling olive groves, luxury hotels, and golf courses, and you’ve got Greece’s hottest new resort destination.

Where to Stay

Since the Costa Navarino development project started nearly 15 years ago, hotels were always a major fixture of the master plan. Along the way, there’s been a slow rollout of properties, which culminated with the August 2023 opening of Mandarin Oriental, a 2,500-acre family-friendly hotel that aims to redefine the area’s tourism scene. One look at the almost extraterrestrial architecture—it appears like a mirage of a modernist mansion along the California coast—and you’ll know this isn’t your typical Greece hotel. Set along a hill that faces Navarino Bay are 99 guest lodgings: Fifty-one suites and 48 pool villas, so you know you’re getting a lot of space (and sea views that only seem to extend it).

The amenities that orbit your stay reflect Mandarin’s trusted brand of luxury hospitality. For instance, you know there’s going to be an exceptional spa that comes with a massive 82-foot indoor-outdoor pool, a fantastic hydrotherapy circuit (one of the most frigid cold plunges in a hotel), and customizable skin and body treatments. There’s also a beach club, which comes with its own pool, where you’ll typically find the families spending the day. The hotel also manages seven world-class culinary concepts (eight if you count the private dining room): Oliviera, which has fantastic views of the bay, is the only Greek kitchen, and it also oversees a fantastic breakfast program. But there’s also a very unusual pizza omakase experience at Pizza Sapienza by Daniele Cason.

Image may contain Terrace Plant Architecture Building Furniture Indoors Lounge Desk Table Cup Chair and Couch

Because the hotel is part of the Costa Navarino project, staff can bring you to any part of the development: the tennis courts, the golf courses, the other hotels, and even to nearby Pylos if you’re seeking offsite exploration. Mandarin Oriental Costa Navarino is a seasonal operation so you can imagine the sums that come with staying here during the summer. (Expect an average nightly rate of around $2,000 a night.) There’s also a W, The Romanos , and a Westin at the resort, and they’re all more accessibly priced. Similarly, some of Costa Navarino’s residences have recently opened up for villa rentals if your group is looking for a more contained stay (but with access to the resort amenities throughout). Villa Aelia , for instance, is a modern four-bedroom retreat equipped with a pool, indoor and outdoor dining, and a BBQ pit.

If you’re looking to stay at the resort, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. Costa Navarino has swiftly raised its profile among golfers with its four 18-hole signature golf courses. One of them, The Bay Course , actually snakes around Mandarin Oriental, a super convenient perk if you’re a golfer staying at that hotel. A 10-minute drive away might be the most spectacular of the four: The Hills Course , a challenging par 72 course, overlooks the green-and-blue expanse of the Peloponnese. Sports fanatics will find lots to love about Costa Navarino, home to world-class basketball and tennis facilities. There’s an NBA Basketball School that caters to both kids and adults with all sorts of learning programs and camps. And the Mouratoglou Tennis Center , founded by Patrick Mouraglou, who has coached the likes of Serena Williams and Grigor Dimitrov, offers an impressive setup of courts: hardcourts, red clay courts, and the only grass court in Greece. (Apparently, homegrown ace Stefanos Tsitsipas regularly trains here, too.)

The region’s rugged landscape is made for many types of active pursuits such as cycling, climbing, and hiking. EXOsports operates Navarino Outdoors activities in the area and leads tours on foot, hands, and wheels. Mountain biking is soaring in popularity right now, and what better place to take up a new hobby than while on a Greek vacation? Ask your guide to lead you to Kalamaris waterfall for a refreshing dip—a reward for your efforts.

Image may contain Plant Vegetation Path Grove Land Nature Outdoors Tree Woodland Sunlight Person and Walking

You’re in Greece, though, so you definitely want to spend a lot of time on the water. The best hotels in the area will have direct beach access (and fun water activities like stand-up paddleboarding), but through the concierge at Mandarin Oriental, you can also opt to take a half-day sail around the bay and beyond into the Ionian Sea. The skipper can whisk you to Voidokilia, one of the more popular beaches in Navarino. It’s a pristine sandy beach shaped like a horseshoe. During the peak of summer, Voidokilia gets so busy that it creates a traffic jam for people trying to reach it by car—so it’s much better to get there by the water. The sail can include other nearby beaches, but more interesting still is the tour of the monuments erected on different islands to commemorate 1827’s Battle of Navarino; one of the region’s most important historic events.

Image may contain Chair Furniture Nature Outdoors Scenery Sea Water Desk and Table

Spread across Costa Navarino are further cultural experiences, like a traditional cooking class with a local family and a philosophy hike led by a classics scholar. But if you want even more history and culture, you’ll have to venture offsite. For example, there’s the Palace of Nestor, a beautifully preserved Mycenaean palace located about 10 miles north of the Navarino development. You may recognize its name from Homer’s Odyssey, as the hero Nestor deployed 90 ships to fight in the Trojan War; today, what remains are ceramics, wall paintings, and a bathroom with a terracotta tub. There are many other archeological ruins to explore, including one in Methoni from the region’s era under the Venetians in the Middle Ages and the Castle of Pylos , a 16th-century fortress.

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Sea Water Lagoon Lake Coast Shoreline Land Architecture Building and Castle

You can also take a day trip 45 minutes east to the city of Kalamata: the land of mountains, sea, and olives. For museum lovers, the Victoria Karelias Museum of Traditional Greek Costumes is worth a stop for its vast collection of gorgeous clothes and jewelry that have been worn in Greece through the ages, from nomadic coats to ornate Byzantine gowns. Then, stroll over to the waterfront and find the beach perch that best speaks to you: Kalamata’s urban beach is renowned for its cleanliness.

Back in Navarino, the shopping is surprisingly robust. Navarino Agora is home to a handful of high-end boutiques from international brands, but the best local ones are Artisun for fun affordable jewelry, and the Benaki Museum Shop , which carries a curated inventory of design-forward pieces, from floral placemats and hand-painted ceramics to breezy, beach-ready sarongs.

Where to Eat

For a resort development, Costa Navarino has a sharp focus on top-tier dining. The various hotels have their in-house concepts; whether that’s the modernized Greek meals at Mandarin Oriental’s Oliviera (the just rich enough octopus cannelloni is the must-order here) or its lobby-area, sea-facing cocktail bar Three Admirals , or W Costa Navarino’s vegetarian kitchen Green Pepper . (They all typically initiate seasonal pop-ups, too.)

But all over the development you’ll find a global collection of dining venues making this little corner of the Peloponnese a culinary destination. In Navarino Agora, there’s Guacana , a Peruvian bar. And in Navarino Dunes, you can enjoy grilled catch of the day with refreshing Greek wines at the K-Studio-designed beachside restaurant Barbouni . Like at the hotels, there are plenty of seasonal food and wine activations throughout the resort, too, such as a recent wine festival held at Navarino Agora that focused on the producers from the region of Messenia.

Off the resort, there are plenty more dining options to choose from. At the adjacent village of Pylos, try Koukos for fancy twists on traditional Greek fare such as meatballs with tomato-loaded scrambled eggs and shrimp saganaki. In the even smaller village of Gialova, stroll the pedestrian street lined with restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops before settling for lunch or dinner at Anama . The lineup of Greek wines is massive but the food menu (Greek with a global flair) is more tightly composed and changes every week. Depending on when you visit, you could sample crab falafel or a bowl of seafood pasta spiked with lemongrass.

A bit farther afield is the village of Marathopoli. There, a short waterfront promenade that hosts several seafood restaurants is the dining strip of choice for visitors from all over. Don’t be surprised to rub elbows with Greek families and friend groups, couples on honeymoons, and athletes in lycra who cycled through town. We like Panorama , where you can tuck into classic Greek seafood, from a mixed-greens salad topped with fried sardines to a cabbage dolmadakia stuffed with white fish. The unobstructed view of the water and the enormous menu of local wines complete the Greek vacation fantasy.

The Mediterranean Traveller

A Quick Guide to Costa Navarino, Greece

Located on the southwest coast of the Peloponnese, Costa Navarino is a quiet and undiscovered part of Greece. Tourism here is low-key but is becoming increasingly well-known as a luxury hotspot .

Costa Navarino means Navarino Coast and is famous for the Battle of Navarino in 1827 which took place in its namesake bay close to Pylos. These days Costa Navarino, as well as the wider Messinia region, is quiet and rural with miles of olive groves, sleepy harbour towns, and an unspoiled coastline.

Costa Navarino is on the opposite side of the country to Greece’s well-trodden tourist trail and the only big-name attraction in the area is Voidokilia, frequently named one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece . It’s not the kind of place that attracts bucket-list tourists who just want to check destinations off a list, but those who want to feel in tune with a destination and its nature and history.

The nearest city is Kalamata (around a 1-hour drive) which has a population of just 75,000, so it’s an ideal part of the country to visit if you don’t want to be fighting for space on the beach. That said, Voidokilia does get unsurprisingly busy in the summer, but most of the time the vibe is undeniably tranquil.

I must admit that Messinia wasn’t really on my radar before, due to its lack of big-name sights, but now I’m convinced it’s only of the best secret destinations in Greece . I’m constantly on the lookout for quiet and classy beach resorts to recommend to UK friends that have a direct flight + short transfer. Add in sandy beaches and you have the holy grail! It’s only a matter of time before word is out.

Voidokilia beach.

How to get to Costa Navarino

Costa Navarino is a short drive (less than one hour) from Kalamata airport which may be small but receives international flights throughout the summer (including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Vienna, and Israel). An expansion is in the works but is still a few years off.

Athens is a three-hour drive along good roads which can bypass the capital and take you directly to the airport, so there is no need to get entangled with city traffic when renting a car.

Small cruise ships dock at Kalamata Port, and there’s a yacht marina at Pylos.

The Costa Navarino Resort Complex

Costa Navarino refers to the coastline and also specifically to a complex of luxury resort hotels . It gets a bit confusing what’s what and where so I’ll try my best to explain here.

Full disclosure – I was invited to stay at Westin Resort Costa Navarino on a press trip.

Costa Navarino is the name for the overall complex with 4 5-star resorts and facilities spread out across 5 different sites which are a short drive from each other:

Elegant sofa in the lobby at The Romanos.

Navarino Dunes

Navarino Dunes was the first and original Costa Navarino site and it’s located a 15-minute drive north of Voidoikilia Beach and Gialova Lagoon. It’s home to:

  • The Westin Resort Costa Navarino – a luxury family resort with a focus on sports and wellness
  • The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort – aimed at couples and honeymooners
  • The Dunes golf course
  • 20 bars/cafes/restaurants
  • Anazoe spa and thalassotherapy centre
  • fitness centre including a Mouratoglou Tennis Centre, indoor climbing, bowling, and basketball
  • 1km sandy beach

W Costa Navarino.

Navarino Waterfront

Navarino Waterfront is located right within Navarino Bay, a short drive south along the coast from Gialova. It faces the uninhabited Sphacteria island which makes for stunning sunsets.

  • home to the W Costa Navarino Hotel – a contemporary lifestyle resort (12+)
  • Parelia beach club
  • 250m sandy beach
  • watersports centre
  • Navarino Agora (opening 2023) – a modern marketplace with restaurants, street food, shops, and an open-air cinema, joining Navarino Waterfront and Navarino Bay

Navarino Bay

Navarino Bay is located just south of Navarino Waterfront, in fact, the two areas are separated by a small stream which is home to the Agora.

  • ultra-luxury, home to the earth-sheltered Mandarin Oriental (opening August 2023)
  • The Bay Golf Course

Navarino Hills

Navarino Hills is a golf resort with 2 golf courses (designed by José Marίa Olazábal) – The Hills Course and the International Olympic Academy Golf Course .

Sustainability champion

The Costa Navarino project was founded by Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos who wanted to put his home on the tourist map but also protect the region’s natural environment and heritage. It’s an ambitious development aiming to be the premier destination in Greece for luxury, golf, and also for sustainability.

Sustainability is woven into Costa Navarino as a guiding principle. It has an extensive recycling and composting programme. Wastewater is also recycled and used for irrigation. Bioclimatic principles and local materials are deployed in the buildings.

At Navarino Dunes, only 10% of the land is built on so there’s plenty of lush landscaping and native plants, birdsong and dragonflies.

It’s also home to the Navarino Environmental Observatory , an on-site climate and environment research station in collaboration with the private and academic sectors. Amongst many other things, it monitors changes at the nearby Gialova Lagoon which is an important (and fragile) wetlands ecosystem.

The beach at Navarino Dunes is a nesting ground for Caretta caretta turtles and Costa Navarino works with Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, to map and protect the nests. The hotels here are built back from the beach (which is also off-limits at night) so that the hatchlings aren’t disturbed by the light. There are some sea-view rooms but if that’s your preference then look at the W or the Mandarin Oriental instead.

There’s even a Pet Community shelter that looks after stray cats and dogs as well as running a sterilisation programme. Visitors can pop in during the week to pet the animals, and you can even adopt if you fall in love (you have been warned!).

Private plunge pool at Westin Resort Costa Navarino.

When is the best time to visit?

With its emphasis on sporting activities and wellness facilities, Costa Navarino aims to be a year-round destination – particularly Navarino Hills. Private pools are heated.

Not all facilities are open year-round though so it’s best to get in touch with your chosen hotel to check if there is something specific you’d like to use.

Castle walls and bridge at Methoni Castle.

What else is in the area?

The Messinia region might not have lots of well-known attractions but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see or do! In fact, I think it has an ideal combination of lush rural landscapes, scenic fishing towns and villages (with great food), and historic sites.

If you’re looking for nightlife it’s not the best place for you. Messinia is sleepy. It’s all about the good life here – a spot of sightseeing, long lazy seafood lunches, and glorious swims in the Ionian Sea.

Here’s what to see in the wider area:

Voidokilia Beach – a perfect horseshoe-shaped beach of fine golden sand. It’s unorganised (no sunbeds, cafes or loos) so bring your own water and snacks and don’t forget to take all your litter with you. You can hike to Nestor’s Cave and Castle on one side, and the Mycenaen Tomb of Thasymedes on the other side (plus a short hike to a secret beach called Glossa ). I visited on a guided e-bike tour from the Westin Resort – great fun!

Gialova Lagoon – a unique wetlands lagoon which is an important staging post for migratory birds in spring and autumn (including flamingos). It’s at the far end of Navarino Bay, with Voidokilia on its other flank, so you can explore both in one go. Renting a bike or e-bike is ideal. At Gialova village there’s a small beach with a pleasant cluster of seafront eateries and amenities.

Islands – there are a number of uninhabited islands off the Messinian coast, perfect for a boat trip. Sphacteria is the closest, it’s on the other side of Navarino Bay and is easy to boat out to (there’s a watersports centre at Navarino Bay). For a longer trip, there’s also Sapientza, Schiza, and Venetiko.

Methoni Castle is a must-see – it’s one of the best-preserved castles in Greece and you might even have it all to yourself (unless your timing coincides with a school group of course). There’s also a village here with a few tavernas and a small beach.

Pylos – Pylos is the Greek name for Navarino and understandably you’ll find an impressive Castle and Archaeological Museum here given its history. But it’s also the best place for a slice of local life – Pylos is a picturesque harbour town with seafront restaurants, a marina, and an atmospheric town square shaded by enormous plane trees.

Waterfalls – the most famous falls in the area are at Polylimnio but there are also nearer ones at Stenosia and Kamalaris .

Ancient Messene – for some reason the ruins of Ancient Messene are not that well-known compared to other sites in the Peloponnese, perhaps because they were only recently excavated. But the site is surprisingly large and well-preserved. It’s northwest of Kalamata but well worth a detour if you have a car.

Sailing – the southwest Peloponnese is a quiet sailing ground where you won’t be jostling for an anchorage, in contrast with its crowded neighbours further up the Ionian Coast. I spent a great day at sea on the lovely Alegria , a boutique crewed catamaran ( hosted ), and can highly recommend it as a way to see the area. Alegria is based at Kalamata and you can sail west to Messinia or southeast to Mani depending on the conditions and your preferences (or further afield if you have time!). The crew are lovely. Say hello from The Mediterranean Traveller if you see them.

If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to Costa Navarino’s 5-star hotels, have a look for accommodation around Gialova or Pylos. Prices in the area are still very reasonable.

This All-suite, Luxury Hotel Just Opened in an Underrated Region in Greece — and We Got a First Look

Spoiler alert: it’s not on the Cycladic Islands.

Costa Navarino, a sun-drenched slice of Greece's Peloponnese Peninsula, may not be a household travel name like  Mykonos  or  Santorini . But this scenic region, steeped in ancient history, has become one of the premier  luxury destinations  in Greece and Europe with premium hotels, world-class golf courses, and stunning gold-sand beaches. So, it’s no surprise that Mandarin Oriental chose Costa Navarino for their first Greek outpost, which opened Aug. 15.

“Our vision is to invite our guests to discover one of the Mediterranean’s most idyllic beachfront destinations on the Peloponnese with exceptional wellness, dining, sports, and leisure experiences, as well as authentic immersive cultural and historical experiences,” Raul Levis, the property’s general manager, told  Travel + Leisure.

Boasting 99 suites and stand-alone villas with sea views, the resort is a beautiful example of biophilic architecture, by the Athens-based firm Tombazis & Associates Architects. Wood accents and natural stone are paired with chic contemporary decor, high-end finishes, and references to the area’s historical sites and local crafts (the rugs, for example, are inspired by traditional Greek dress-weaving practices). Each villa has a private plunge pool and a spacious outdoor deck.

“If you stay at our villas, they are completely incorporated into the environment with landscaped rooftops. As a guest, you will feel as if you are on a green hill overlooking Navarino Bay,” Levis explained, noting that the villas are designed with enough space between them to ensure the guests have complete privacy.

Chef Bertrand Valegeas, who has previously worked with Four Seasons, One&Only, St. Regis, and Waldorf Astoria hotels, leads the resort’s culinary programming. Among the five restaurants and bars, Oliviera stands out for its beautiful location, with sweeping bay views and a diverse à la carte menu of international flavors. And Levantine cuisine ( the Levant region  encompasses roughly Lebanon, Syria, Israel, Cyprus, and Jordan) prepared with fresh local produce is the star of  Tahir Restaurant .

On-site wellness offerings include a spectacular indoor/outdoor 82-foot swimming pool with panoramic bay views, a Hammam, an herbal sauna, and a diverse array of  spa treatments .

Nightly rates at  Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino , start from €990 (or about $1,100), but if you book your stay by Oct. 31, 2023, you can take advantage of the  resort’s opening  offer that includes complimentary daily breakfast for two, resort credit, and more.

A First Look at the New Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino

The new mandarin oriental is remarkable for both its innovative architectural features and its sustainable design..

Giorgos Tsiros | September 13th, 2023

There are hotel brands whose properties are considered destinations in their own right. Just as we say “I’ve been there” for a particular country or city that has been etched in our mind, we also say “I’ve stayed there” for certain hotels. I’m referring to those places that transcend their designation as “luxury” hotels to achieve – and continuously redefine – perfection in the area of hospitality. Those that offer a life experience and whose presence in a particular destination raises the status of the location across the international tourism sector in general and in the eyes of that sector’s most demanding and affluent guests in particular . I’m referring, of course, to that class of traveler that the 20th-century journalist Igor Cassini dubbed “the jet set”.

It’s not of paramount importance how such hotel brands price their services, because their core customers know the true value of the services they offer. They know, too, that these hotel brands will always lead the way when it comes to innovation, sustainability, best practices, aesthetics, gastronomy – in fact, in everything. After all, if these great names can’t live up to the expectations they have created through years of dedicated effort and investment, they run the risk of jeopardizing their reputation.

manessis travel costa navarino

Countless lists of hotel brands of this caliber are published every year. A recent survey of the best luxury hotel brands, published by CEOWORLD magazine in April 2023, include, among other hotel brands, Six Senses, Soneva, Rosewood, Four Seasons, One & Only, Aman and, of course, Mandarin Oriental, whose hotels have prominently figured on these lists for years.

I’ve never stayed at any of the Mandarin Oriental hotels, but I’m familiar with the brand’s iconic fan logo , as well as its award-winning advertising campaign, launched in 2000, which showcases an impressive cast of international celebrities who regularly stay at its hotels (Christoph Walz, Cecilia Bartoli, Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, Michelle Yeoh, Morgan Freeman, Isabelle Huppert and others). It should be noted that while many luxury hotel brands recruit notable individuals for their campaigns, Mandarin Oriental goes one step further, rewarding its celebrity guests (who are, in fact, true fans of its hotels) with a donation to the charity of their choice.

manessis travel costa navarino

The first Mandarin Oriental hotel opened its doors 60 years ago in Hong Kong . In 1974, a second hotel opened in Bangkok, laying the foundation for a hospitality group that gradually expanded throughout the world. Today, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group operates 38 hotels worldwide (more locations are currently under development), all renowned for their luxury . In fact, Forbes magazine has awarded 25 of the Group’s hotels five-star status in recognition of the experience they offer their guests .

Mandarin Oriental is a luxury hotel brand that combines traditional Asian hospitality with modern cosmopolitanism. The following extract – from an article on the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok by freelance travel writer Lee Cobaj which appeared in the luxury and lifestyle travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler as part of a review of the best hotels and resorts in the world – gives you a good idea of what this blend produces: “On my last visit to the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, I ended up chatting to a family of Thai tuna-fish billionaires over plates of sushi at kaiseki restaurant Kinu by Takagi. A few months before, I gave Russell Crowe a big smile and a nod in the corridor, thinking his face looked familiar – an old neighbor? Then there was the time I was upgraded to the glorious ivory-and-jade-green John le Carré suite and spent most of my time in a bathrobe watching long-tails, tankers, and rice barges zigzagging along the Chao Phraya River, imagining myself to be a real writer.”

manessis travel costa navarino

Although its origins lie in the Far East, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has always managed to integrate, with respect and a touch of imagination, the local culture of each destination into its hotels . For example, every hotel has its own fan logo, designed by local artists and inspired by the region’s local history and cultural heritage.

The logo of Mandarin Oriental, Paris, for example, was designed by Maison Lesage, an haute-couture embroidery atelier that is part of Chanel’s Métiers d’art, while in Dubai, the hotel’s fan logo was designed by Aljoud Lootah, a multidisciplinary designer based there.

The renowned Chinese fashion designer Vivienne Tam designed the logo for Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou, while Dimitris Papaioannou – perhaps Greece’s most multitalented and internationally renowned artist – was commissioned to design the fan logo of Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino . For his work, Papaioannou drew inspiration from ancient Mycenaean motifs and the colors of the Messenian landscape.

Natural elements

Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino officially opened its doors. The areas and spaces that you see on these pages came alive, welcoming their first guests. And what a welcome awaits them! The influence of the Messinian countryside did not stop at the unique fan logo. The terraced design of the hotel’s earth-sheltered villas, discreetly nestled into the hillside, offers unobstructed, panoramic views of the Navarino Bay , bringing guests as close as possible to nature and the area’s unspoiled beauty. The hotel’s architectural features are inspired by local rural traditions and the stone sheepfolds that dot the region. Built from local stone, the hotel’s villas and suites follow the landscape’s natural contours, creating the feeling that the resort is organically linked to its location, incorporating as it does such natural elements as trees or large rocks. The hotel was designed and built on the principles of green architecture ; the villas’ planted roofs blend in so perfectly with the natural landscape that, from above, the resort is almost invisible.

Another characteristic aspect of Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino is the seamless flow between the hotel’s indoor and outdoor areas, enabling guests to interact with nature effortlessly . This indoor/outdoor connection, along with the use of local materials, is prominent throughout the resort. Interior stone walls are covered with a natural coating, while exterior concrete components have been left unashamedly exposed – although they have been polished – to offer a minimalist contrast . Windows with innovative aluminum frames offer unobstructed views of the sea. Olive trees, cypress trees, lavender shrubs and thyme plants envelop the building, toning down those concrete exteriors and giving the structure a sense of true rootedness.

manessis travel costa navarino

The hotel’s interior design reflects, in both the materials and shapes that were chosen, the beauty of; nature itself. It’s characterized by touches of finesse and elegance, incorporating elements inspired by travels around the world. The design is complemented by a palette of earthy undertones with subtle motifs and soothing colors. Design aficionados will also be able to make out references to ancient Greek handicrafts, to the region’s historical landmarks, and even to the Greek revolution of 1821, with motifs, fretwork and traditional costumes on view .

The Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino, the fourth hotel developed by TEMES S.A., a leading destination developer, stretches out over an area of 140 hectares with views of Navarino Bay . It has 99 rooms, including 48 earth-sheltered villas with a private pool , as well as five restaurants and bars and an impressive spa that will open in the fall. Tombazis & Associates Architects and K-Studio developed the resort’s design, while the indoor areas and spaces were designed by Alexander Waterworth, Studio Afroditi Krassa, MKV Design and K-Studio.

NB: In a recent interview given to the journalist Ilias Bello of “Kathimerini” newspaper, the Group Chief Executive of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group James Riley expressed his confidence that a third Mandarin Oriental – in addition to Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino and the one currently under construction in collaboration with TEMES S.A. and anticipated to open in 2027 in Elliniko, Athens – will be constructed in Greece in the near future.

Care for the environment

Contributing to local communities and protecting the environment are two of the main pillars on which the Group’s development strategy is founded. Its goals include transforming its hotels into plastic-free facilities and expanding its procurement programs to cover the key categories of seafood, coffee, tea, vanilla, cocoa and eggs, all sourced responsibly. On the basis of the principles of green architecture, Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino was designed with an emphasis on maximizing energy efficiency and respecting the natural environment .

The earth-sheltered villas offer many climate and energy benefits. The resort’s facilities use electricity for which guarantees of origin will be received.

The resort has been set up so that its scale of operations can contract or expand to meet capacity needs, depending on the level of occupancy , thus reducing energy consumption and improving the guests’ experience.

manessis travel costa navarino

The shade that is provided by the resort’s façade and the natural ventilation in the open spaces makes the need for mechanical cooling support in these spaces unnecessary without, however, compromising guest comfort. The strategy of abolishing air conditioning systems, wherever possible, is being achieved with the creation of semi-protected areas that “filter” the weather conditions.

Materials such as marble, mosaic and stone, all of which have come from local suppliers, don’t require a lot of maintenance and “mature” over time to further blend in with the surrounding landscape.

The Navarino Bay area is now home to more than 2,700 replanted olive trees and 500,000 planted shrubs.

Recycling will be carried out throughout the resort via the creation of different waste streams based on circular economy principles aimed at achieving zero waste.

In the near future, a large part of the power that the resort uses will be produced on-site through renewable sources, a strategy consistent with the commitment that the hotel has made to achieve a net zero carbon footprint by 2030.

Other than if specified in a property listing, the minimum length of stay is 2 consecutive nights and the maximum length of stay is 28 consecutive nights. Bookings are cancellable without penalty within 48 hours of being made if your booking is made at least 10 days before your scheduled check-in date; thereafter, bookings are subject to the Host’s applicable cancellation and other policies. Any booking cancelled within 48 hours after the initial booking will result in a voided billing transaction. Voided billing transactions do not result in a charge or refund and will not appear on your monthly Card statement. Dates of a booking cannot be modified once made. Card Members must cancel their booking and make a new booking through AmexTravel.com; in which case, the new booking will be subject to availability, any cancellation policies and fees, any increase in the nightly rates or other fees, and any other applicable policies or fees of the Host. After cancellation, the property previously booked may not be available for subsequent booking for up to 24 hours or more. American Express is not the provider of the properties offered for rental and does not collect taxes or remit taxes to applicable tax authorities. Tax amounts displayed include an estimated amount that Hosts are to bill for applicable government-imposed taxes and fees. 2X Membership Rewards Points – Basic Card Members with a Membership Rewards-enrolled Card get at least 1 Membership Rewards® point for every eligible dollar spent on their Membership Rewards program-enrolled American Express Card or Additional Card on their Account and will also get at least 1 additional point (for a total of 2 points) for each dollar charged for eligible Select Homes + Retreats purchases on any Card on the Account, minus cancellations and credits.

3X Membership Rewards Points – Green Card: Basic Card Members, when paying with their eligible Green Card or Additional Card on their Account, can earn 2 additional points (for a total of 3 points) for each dollar charged for eligible Select Homes + Retreats purchases on any Card on the Account, minus cancellations and credits.

5X Membership Rewards Points – Platinum Card: Basic Card Members, when paying with their eligible Platinum Card or Additional Card on their Account, can earn 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar charged for eligible Select Homes + Retreats purchases on any Card on the Platinum Card Account, minus cancellations and credits. Additional points will be credited to the Membership Rewards account 10-12 weeks after final payment is made.

$200 Hotel Credit:   Basic Card Members on U.S. Consumer Platinum Card Account are eligible to receive up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year when they or Additional Platinum Card Members use their Cards to pay for eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® and The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com, the Amex® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card) or when Companion Platinum Card Members on such Platinum Card Accounts pay for eligible prepaid bookings for The Hotel Collection made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com, the Amex® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card). Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on the Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, the total amount of statement credits for eligible purchases will not exceed $200 per calendar year, per Card Account. Fine Hotels + Resorts® program bookings may be made only by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic Platinum and Additional Platinum Card Members. The Hotel Collection bookings may be made by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic and Additional Platinum Card Members and Companion Platinum Card Members on the Platinum Card Account. Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card Members are not eligible for the benefit. To receive the statement credits, an eligible Card Member must make a new booking using their eligible Card through American Express Travel on or after July 1st, 2021, that is prepaid (referred to as "Pay Now" on amextravel.com and the Amex App), for a qualifying stay at an available, participating Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection property. Bookings of The Hotel Collection require a minimum stay of two consecutive nights. Eligible bookings must be processed before December 31st, 11:59PM Central Time, each calendar year to be eligible for statement credits within that year. Eligible bookings do not include interest charges, cancellation fees, property fees or other similar fees, or any charges by a property to you (whether for your booking, your stay or otherwise).

Statement credits are typically received within a few days, however it may take 90 days after an eligible prepaid hotel booking is charged to the Card Account. American Express relies on the merchant’s processing of transactions to determine the transaction date. The transaction date may differ from the date you made the purchase if, for example, there is a delay in the merchant submitting the transaction to us or if the merchant uses another date as the transaction date. This means that in some cases your purchase may not earn the statement credit benefit for the benefit period in which you made the purchase. For example, if an eligible purchase is made on December 31st but the merchant processes the transaction such that it is identified to us as occurring on January 1st, then the statement credit available in the next calendar year will be applied. Statement credits may not be received or may be reversed if the booking is cancelled or modified. If the Card Account is canceled or past due, it may not qualify to receive a statement credit. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as eligible, you will not receive the statement credits. For example, your transaction will not be eligible if it is a booking: (i) made with a property not included in the Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection programs, (ii) not made through American Express Travel, or (iii) not made with an eligible Card. Participating properties and their availability are subject to change. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit, American Express will not have an obligation to provide and may reverse any statement credits provided to you. If a charge for an eligible purchase is included in a Pay Over Time balance on your Card Account, the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time balance. Instead, the statement credit may be applied to your Pay In Full balance. Please refer to  AmericanExpress.com/FHR  and  AmericanExpress.com/HC   for more information about Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, respectively.

5X Membership Rewards® Points Platinum Card:   Basic Card Members will get 1 Membership Rewards® point for each dollar charged for eligible purchases on their Platinum Card® or an Additional Card on their Account and 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar charged for eligible travel purchases on any Card on the Account (“Additional Points”), minus cancellations and credits. Eligible travel purchases are limited to: (i) purchases of air tickets on scheduled flights, of up to $500,000 in charges per calendar year, booked directly with passenger airlines or through American Express Travel (by calling 1-800-525-3355 or through AmexTravel.com); (ii) purchases of prepaid hotel reservations booked through American Express Travel; and (iii) purchases of prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com. Eligible travel purchases do not include: charter flights, private jet flights, flights that are part of tours, cruises, or travel packages (other than prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com), ticketing or similar service fees, ticket cancellation or change fees, property fees or similar fees, hotel group reservations or events, interest charges, or purchases of cash equivalents. Eligible prepaid hotel bookings or prepaid flight+hotel bookings that are modified directly with the hotel will not be eligible for Additional Points.

Bonuses that may be received with your Card on other purchase categories or in connection with promotions or offers from American Express cannot be combined with this benefit. Any portion of a charge that the Basic Card Member elects to cover through redemption of Membership Rewards points is not eligible to receive points. Additional terms and restrictions apply.

Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. We group certain merchant codes into categories that are eligible for Additional Points. A purchase with a merchant will not earn Additional Points if the merchant’s code is not included in an Additional Points category. Basic Card Members may not receive Additional Points if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for an Additional Points category. For example, you may not receive Additional Points when: a merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services, a merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers), or you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.

To be eligible for this benefit, the Card Account must not be cancelled. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit in any way American Express may remove access to this benefit from the Account. For additional information, call the number on the back of your Card or visit americanexpress.com/rewards-info for more information about rewards.

If hotel reservations are made or modified directly with the hotel provider, the reservation will not be eligible for this 5X Membership Rewards® point benefit. To be eligible to receive extra points, Card account(s) must not be cancelled or past due at the time of extra points fulfillment. If booking is cancelled, the extra points will be deducted from the Membership Rewards account. Extra points will be credited to the Membership Rewards account approximately 6-10 weeks after eligible purchases appear on the billing statement. Additional point bonuses you may receive with your Card on other purchase categories from American Express may not be combined with this benefit (e.g., 1.5X and 2X bonuses for Business Platinum Card Members, etc.). Purchases eligible for multiple additional point bonuses will only receive the highest eligible bonus. The benefits associated with the Additional Card(s) you choose may be different than the benefits associated with your basic Card. To learn about the benefits associated with Additional Card(s) you choose, please call the number on the back of your Card.
