“Bring Me The Horizon look and sound like megastars”: The first show of the Nex Gen era was ludicrous, meticulous and surprisingly heavy

At their first concert since the release of new album post human: nex gen, pop-metal royalty bring me the horizon hosted an extravaganza of pyro, video and once-in-a-lifetime moments.

Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon onstage in 2023

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

“Mystic Festival… are you ready for the greatest night of your lives?” a robotic voice asks the annual Polish heavy metal gathering. It’s a pretty ballsy question to begin the build-up for Bring Me The Horizon ’s headline set, which is mere moments away. However, if there’s one thing this band have never lacked, it’s ambition.

During the 2010s, the Northerners shattered the barriers between metal and modern pop. Increasingly melodic and electrified albums like Sempiternal and Amo infuriated elitists, but simultaneously catapulted Bring Me into the rock ’n’ roll elite. Their anointment was only proven last week, when the surprise release of Post Human: Nex Gen pricked the ears of seemingly an entire generation of music listeners.

Still, though, if there are any doubters of Bring Me’s status at Gdansk’s otherwise no-nonsense metal festival (the other headliners this year were Machine Head and Megadeth ), they’re about to be shown the scale of the juggernaut – and maybe even musically won over.

As Darkside kickstarts the evening, the band look and sound like megastars. In front of a church-like video backdrop, their congregation is overjoyed throughout the night. Their catchiness and digital edge hasn’t been dulled by the absence of keyboardist/producer Jordan Fish , while vocalist Oli Sykes’ cheeky calls for moshing (even if it’s just a “six out of 10” to get everyone limber) are gleefully met. A live sound that emphasises the force of these lads’ tracks only helps the whirlpools to open.

The remaining 90 minutes only grow more and more batshit. A narrative about the end of the world is threaded into the concert by video packages between songs, and it strikes an apex of zaniness when a massive bloody angel “smashes” through Bring Me’s “church” during Kool-Aid . The projected monstrosity even circles its fingers at the same time Sykes calls for another pit. Then, to introduce Shadow Moses , the singer brings a lit flare onstage, which “ignites” a symbol on the backdrop: such is tonight’s attention to detail amidst the madness. And, of course, pyro gets shot out like machine gun bullets throughout all of these spectacles.

The live debut of Top 10 Statues That Cried Blood reaffirms this evening as a special occasion, before, for one fan called Vicky, the show gets even more special during Antivist . The young woman is invited onstage by Sykes and gets an endearing turn at co-vocals. The frontman then doubles down with Drown , bringing a camera down to the barrier so everyone can see Bring Me’s most ardent followers screaming their lungs out.

Compared to other metal headliners of their level, Bring Me are new blood with plenty of people still needing to be convinced. Tonight, at their first set since the seismic drop of Nex Gen , the band reiterated their commitment to being a fresh, revolutionary force in this scene. Whether this has actually been the greatest night of your life is subjective, but it was definitely one of the most no-holds-barred festival extravaganzas of your life.

Forza Horizon 5 Festival Playlist Weekly Challenges Guide Series 34 – Spring

Paul Renshaw

The Retrowave series enters its final week in Forza Horizon 5 , as Spring has sprung over in Mexico with the latest Festival Playlist Weekly Challenges for Series 34.

I’m hopeful that the series will finish strong, as going out with a whimper would be a shame. So, here I am to present you the cars and tunes that you will need to finish the series off in style – and hopefully being knee deep in nice new cars!

So, without further ado, I present to you – Series 34 Spring!

Forza Horizon 5 Series 34 Winter Photo (1)

Part 1: Weekly Car Challenge – Future of Mid

BMW are centre stage here, with their M1 from 1981. Famed largely for having odd doors that slide into the sill, I didn’t know that it was built as a result of a partnership with Lamborghini! That fell through and Italdesign stepped in to save the day, ensuring the thing was built.

Should you not have one in your garage, you’ll have to go and purchase one. Or, if you completed the Trial last week ( Series 34 Winter ), it should be in your garage!

Chapter 1 – Rocky Beginnings

Get in your new car, take it for a spin. Step one complete.

Chapter 2 – Form and Function

With 277 bhp under the bonnet, the car isn’t shy, so we now need to win a road race. Stock trim should suffice.

I used the Oval circuit at the stadium.

Chapter 3 – Future Proof

We now need to spend a mere 20,000 credits upgrading the car so go nuts!

Alternatively look for share name “S1” with my GT, Red620Ti.

Chapter 4 – Photogenic

Earn 3 stars at speed traps. With the build above, should be a piece of cake!

Complete these tasks and we will be five points closer to the seasonal prizes that are up for grabs with Forza Horizon 5’s Festival Playlist Weekly Challenges for Series 34.

Part 2: Weekly Challenges, Championships and PR Stunts

With the weekly challenge done and dusted, let’s dive into the rest of the mayhem on offer.

The Trial, only one Eventlab, PR Stunts, races, who could ask for more?

The Trial – Crosstown Classics

Let’s try to race nicely, yeah?

We need a “Rare Classic” car and the tuning limit is B Class 700.

I chose a Ferrari 365 GTB4, and the share name is “365” with my GT, Red620Ti.

The prize for managing to find people who actually want to race The Trial like it should be done is a Ferrari 365 GTB4, ironically enough!

Eventlab 1 – DEXTER41300 Presents Waterfall GP

We need a Retro Supercar, and the tuning limit is S1 Class 900. I went for a Bugatti EB110, and the share name is S1EB with my GT, Red620Ti.

A nice long course that flows well, with a few surprises. The best one was flamingos flying through solid tarmac!

Take away a Quattro from ‘83 for completing this, why don’t you?

PR Stunt 1 – Danger Sign – Los Jardines

This week, all the PR stunts need the same car, a BMW tuned to A Class 800.

I went with a M3 from 2005 in stock trim, and hitting the ramp at more than 150 mph made it easy. Jumping over 250m will see us take the prize.

Do so and you’ll find a Super Wheelspin heading your way in return.

PR Stunt 2 –  Drift Zone – Panoramica

If there’s one thing Beemers are good at, it is going sideways. Just ask my brother, who had an unfortunate lamppost accident after losing the back end on a roundabout!

I chose a stock M3 from 2005 in his honour. Score over 65,000 drift points to win.

Another Super Wheelspin awaits.

PR Stunt 2 –  Drift Zone – Las Curvas

Keeping in the same M3 for this event, this time we need to score over 62,000 drift points.

Yet another Super Wheelspin – lovely!

Seasonal Championship 1 – Pop Up, Up and Down

Cars with pop up headlights are the theme here, in case you hadn’t guessed, and the tuning class is A Class 800.

I went with a Jaguar XJ220 and the share code is : 123500759.

For winning out, we can take home a Porsche 944, ideal for the hair dressers out there!

Seasonal Championship 2 – Night Riders

No sign of David Hasselhoff, sadly, but never mind.

We need to grab a Retro Hot Hatch, tune it to C Class 600, and then go racing. I chose a stock Honda Civic Type R from 2004, as it is at the tuning limit already.

The prize for winning is a Ford Escort RS Turbo.

Part 3: Other Challenges

There’s always more to get involved in than just the racing, and that is the case again this week with Series 34 Spring. You’ve got a photo to take, a Treasure Hunt, Horizon Tour and that is your lot.

Photo Challenge – #FLIGHTREADY

Take a photo of a 2002 Corvette Z06 at the Aerodromo en La Selva. What could be easier?

Enjoy my artistic effort up at the top of this piece.

The reward? A new hat, a White Snake Helmet. Not sure if it’s a reference to the band…

Treasure Hunt – Suspension of Disbelief

The clue reads “An awesome show of speed high above trees, keep an eye out while crossing this bridge and treasure you may see”. The photo shows a TVR Sagaris crossing the Gran Puente bridge.

I’m going to guess an awesome speed skill is required while driving over the bridge?

The location of the Treasure Chest is shown below.

Forza Horizon 5 Series 34 Winter Treasure

Horizon  Tour – Co-op Races

We need to complete a Horizon Tour session now, and you know the score – 3 races against driverbots, and two head to head races across country.

I can’t give you tune for this, as it could be anything, but just go along for the ride!

As a reward, we can get a whole 8 points to the totals. Nearly as much as the Trial and a lot easier!

Part 4: Hot Wheels Events

If you have the Hot Wheels expansion and are an Elite Level player, then you get to enjoy a couple of extra events.

Seasonal PR Stunt – Drift Zone – Ice Cauldron

We need to grab a Retro Saloon, tune it to B Class 700, and then go sliding. I chose an Audi RS4 Avant, not a saloon, but the share code is : 172973840. It is AWD, so it may need to poked with a stick to make it slide.

The target is 150,000 drift points.

The prize is another Super Wheelspin. You know, those things we STILL really don’t need…

Seasonal Championship – Hammering the Gas

Same car is required here, so I stayed in the Audi.

Completing the championship will get us an AMG Hammer Coupe, as you may have guessed.

Part 5: Rally Adventure Events

The Rally Adventure expansion brings even more events to the roster and provided you are already a Horizon Badlands champion, you’ll get access to the following couple of events…

Seasonal PR Stunt – Speed Zone – Tres Colinas

Classic Rally cars tuned to B Class 700 are needed for the next two events, and so and so I chose a #5 Escort RS1800 RS from 1977. Share code is : 793610371.

We need to average over 81 mph to win.

A Super Wheelspin is your reward.

Seasonal Championship – Easy G-Teasy

Same car class and tuning limit here, but it looks like an offroad race is afoot.

I used the same car as above, gotta save those pennies.

The reward for racing? A Ford GT70. See what they did there?

The rewards for Series 34 and Spring in Forza Horizon 5

With Series 34 coming to end, you should be within in touching distance of the new cars for the month. And they are the N Vision 74’22 for 80 points and a DeLorean DMC12 for 160 points.

Even more Rivals circuits have now been added with Series 34 as well. There are four to try your hand at this month – Playa Azul Circuit and Las Laderas for real engines, and Descansar Dorado Sprint and Los Jardines Circuit for battery powered cars. Post a clean lap on each to score 4 whole points towards the prize cars.

Grab enough points and Series 34 Spring also sees you given access to the exclusiveCitroen BX4TC for 20 points. Additionally, for 40 points we can get a GMC Syclone, a hard to find car apparently.

Details on Series 35 seem to be a little thin on the ground, but I feel certain that I’ll be back here next week, so I shall reveal all then! The name is Modern Horizons, so I’nm guessing there won’t be quite as much neon about?

To enjoy these events in the Festival Playlist Weekly Challenges, you’ll need a copy of Forza Horizon 5. It’s available on Game Pass, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and on the cloud via mobile. The Xbox Store will sort you out with a download.

Let us know in the comments if I have helped, hindered or missed the mark with these tunes.

A Prodigy of Jazz Clubs Explores Other Stages

The multi-instrumentalist Julius Rodriguez hones a bigger, more audacious sound on his second album, “Evergreen.”

A man in white tank top and black pants stares directly at the camera. Light streaks across half his face.

By Marcus J. Moore

Sitting outside a bar in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn one recent Sunday afternoon, Julius Rodriguez spoke with characteristic straightforwardness describing music that is anything but. The composer and bandleader, who has played with the rapper ASAP Rocky and style-bending artists like Kassa Overall and Meshell Ndegeocello, articulated the central challenge of his work, an amorphous blend of jazz, funk, gospel and R&B he simply calls “the music.”

It’s not about the notes, he explained, it’s about the emotions behind them.

“How do you describe the color orange to someone?” Rodriguez said, his tone warm yet flat. “How do you describe the taste of salt to someone who’s never tasted salt? You don’t know that you’re there until you’re there. You don’t know what it feels like until you feel it.”

Rodriguez, 25, has been lauded for his tremendous sense of harmony and virtuosity across piano, drums, bass and whatever else he feels like playing any given week. He can hold his own at a psychedelic free jazz show in Brooklyn, a stadium-size rap concert in Los Angeles, a stately supper-club gig on the Upper West Side. “He’s what we call auxiliary,” Ndegeocello said in a phone interview. “He plays everything .”

On “Evergreen,” out Friday on Verve Records, Rodriguez funnels sounds into a 40-minute collage of electric-acoustic arrangements steeped equally in tradition and disruption, convention and audacity coming through in a big, clean sound seemingly inspired by 1970s jazz fusion. It’s a sharp detour from “Let Sound Tell All,” Rodriguez’s 2022 debut album, which was indebted to the jazz and gospel he grew up playing in churches and small clubs.

Long before Rodriguez burst onto the New York jazz scene, he was a precocious kid in Westchester. When he was 3 or 4, he took piano lessons from a family friend, Audrey McCallum, the first Black student to attend the Peabody Preparatory, who gave Rodriguez his first keyboard and encouraged his parents to buy a piano. “At the same time, I’m learning about tempo and time signatures, how to read music on a staff, and where the notes are on a piano,” he said. “All that while learning how to read and write English.”

At age 6 or 7, Rodriguez began taking formal piano lessons from John Senakwami, a piano and vocal instructor, and a luminary in Rodriguez’s hometown. One lesson a week became two, then a few more, then just about every day. “When I first met Julius, it wasn’t his skill that I noticed, it was how hard he worked,” Senakwami said in a phone interview. “He would take it upon himself to do a lot of research and come up with things that you didn’t teach him.”

Rodriguez’s diligence was also fashioned by his parents. His father, Adlher, would play Thelonious Monk CDs as he drove his son to jazz gigs in the city. “On the weekend, we would go to Jazz at Lincoln Center to see the orchestra, and eventually my dad started taking me to jam sessions to sit in with people,” Rodriguez said. “We would do 1 a.m. jam sessions when I was 11, 12, 13 years old.”

He played his first show as a bandleader — at 14 — at Miles’ Cafe in Midtown Manhattan after the promoter booked him from an email sign-up form. Rodriguez posted fliers and invited people to the gig. “That’s a very ambitious thing to do as a 14-year-old, but my parents would let me do it because I’d made it happen,” Rodriguez said. “I got to see how the business side of it worked, how to get a certain number of people to show up, how much money you make out of it.”

As a freshman at the Masters School — still a “big jazz nerd” by his own admission — he discovered artists like James Blake and Chance the Rapper, “all the things I just wasn’t exposed to,” through a playlist of musicians set to play Governors Ball that year. Then he went to the festival and was blown away.

“It was the first time that I saw live musicians playing in front of crowds that big,” Rodriguez said. “I was used to going to jazz clubs, you know, the 60-seater, maybe a hundred, 150 at the most. For me to see huge crowds and people playing instruments live, doing what I wanted to do and touching that many people of my demographic and age, it was kind of eye opening. So I stopped being close minded to new music or popular music. I thought, ‘Let me try and absorb this and figure out what’s there and what I can do to be part of that as well.’”

Rodriguez had been a student at Juilliard for two years, playing in places like Smalls and Zinc Bar, when friends in the group Onyx Collective invited him to hit the road in 2018 as part of the backing band for ASAP Rocky’s tour.

The gig lasted two months; Rodriguez went back to Juilliard for a week before dropping out. “It was an opportunity I really wanted to capitalize on, and I really wanted to focus on having a career,” Rodriguez said.

In 2019, he started recording “Let Sound Tell All,” which included a fierce session with Morgan Guerin, a multi-instrumentalist, on the song “Two Way Street.” The engineer Daniel Schlett posted a clip from the studio to Instagram, using it to playfully nudge the Verve president, Jamie Krents, to consider signing Rodriguez. “I was like, ‘You definitely need to check this kid out,’” Schlett said in a phone interview. “‘This is the best piano player in New York. Don’t you guys need the best piano player in New York on your record label?’”

Dahlia Ambach Caplin, the senior vice president of A&R at Verve, who signed Rodriguez based on the recommendation and after listening to his music, called him “truly, truly brilliant in every setting, which is highly unusual.”

“Evergreen” has surprising moments even for someone of Rodriguez’s nonconformity. With just an acoustic guitar loop and bright synth chords, the track “Rise and Shine” evokes early ’70s Stevie Wonder albums like “Music of My Mind” and “ Talking Book ,” on which Wonder centered the clavinet and Moog synthesizers. Another track, “Run to It,” is a brassy New Orleans-focused tune meant for second-line celebrations. “Mission Statement,” the lead single on the album, features upper-register synths and bouncy electronic drums that make it feel as breezy and jovial as the score of an old Sega Genesis video game.

Then there’s “Champion’s Call,” a riotous concluding track featuring the rapper, singer and producer Georgia Anne Muldrow. Against cascading drums and keys, Muldrow repeats the song’s title, turning it into a mantra for Rodriguez’s life and career. It’s a fitting rallying cry for a young artist with expansive aspirations.

“What makes this record forward pushing is that, yes, I leave space open, but I have all these instruments,” Rodriguez said. “I’m not just the jazz guy. It’s not just acoustic music. The definition of an evergreen is a plant whose foliage remains functional in all seasons. With all the different genres on the record, it’s still my voice, still me doing myself.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is deeply saddened to announce the death of Kevork Mardirossian, James H. Rudy Professor of Music in Violin. After a brief illness, Mardirossian died in Bloomington on Tuesday, June 11 th . He was 70 years old.

Mardirossian was appointed to IU Jacobs School of Music in 2008. Whether as a concert soloist, recitalist, or chamber musician, Mardirossian performed throughout Bulgaria, the former Soviet Union, and Eastern Europe before moving to Europe, where he developed an impressive solo career with tours of England, Wales, Italy, France, and the United States, including debuts in London and Carnegie Hall in 1992. He appeared as guest artist at international music festivals such as Manuel De Falla in Spain; Shanghai festival in China; in Cheltenham, England; European Cultural Months; International Chamber Music Festival in Plovdiv, Bulgaria; Czech Festival in Trento, Italy; and Sofia Musical Weeks, among others in France, Germany, Spain, Japan, China, and Korea.

“Kevork Mardirossian was an extraordinarily accomplished musician and a professor who was well beloved by his students. He was a wonderful colleague and friend to so many in our community and his absence will be deeply felt across Jacobs School of Music,”  said Abra Bush, David Henry Jacobs Bicentennial Dean.

His first solo recital was at age 12, and his intensive concert career started when he won the gold medal and first prize at the Obretenov Violin Competition in Bulgaria in 1978, the gold medal at Katya Popova International Music Festival in 1979, and several international chamber music competitions in 1985-86 with his duo partner, pianist Lee Phillips.

In 1980, he became the concertmaster of the Plovdiv Philharmonic until 1988, when he moved to the United States, where he was appointed artist-in-residence at the University of Central Arkansas. There, he co-founded the Kapelle Trio with pianist Lee Phillips and cellist Felice Farrell as well as the Heber Springs Chamber Music Festival and master courses in 1998. From 1995 to 2008, he was violin professor and chair of the String Department at the College of Music and Drama at Louisiana State University (LSU).

Mardirossian was a highly respected violin pedagogue and devoted mentor to more than 100 outstanding students, many of them winners in national and international competitions. Others can be found in the world’s leading orchestras as concertmasters and principals, and as teachers in universities in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

He has served on the faculties of the International Institute at Round Top, Texas (2001-08); Aria String Academy in Massachusetts; Aurora Chamber Music festival in Sweden; Manuel De Falla International Courses in Granada, Spain; String Academy in Pontedeume, Spain; and international master courses at the Shanghai Conservatory. He presented regular master classes in Europe, Asia, South America, and the United States in many major schools and universities.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Adds IRL Aquarium Tour

Portrait of Alejandra Gularte

Good news if you live near an aquarium: Nintendo and Animal Crossing: New Horizons have announced an aquarium tour this summer. Bad news: They’re still not adding any updates to the game. Nintendo is encouraging its villagers to get out of the house and see some fish IRL. After debuting at the Seattle Aquarium last year, Tom Nook & Co. will head to seven new aquariums this summer, beginning at Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach in June. It will include meet and greets with Isabelle, K.K. Slider, and Nook on select days as well as themed activities — the Seattle exhibit had stamp rallies and a bingo scavenger hunt. Participation won’t cost any additional bells as it’s included with admission. However, it is out of anyone’s control if Tom Nook asks you about your loan.
